The Dream Catcher Tour
We all dream. Some more frequently than others. Fathers mothers, sisters, brothers. In bright daylight or snuggled under covers. Dreaming of change or material goods not yet obtained. A quieter life or fortune and fame. Last week you possessed it, now its up in flames. Eyes on the elusive prize, it seems you have miss-aimed. Focused on the end, not enjoying the means. The small simple moments consisting of in-betweens. Gold may glitter and silver may gleam. But all worthy adventures start with a dream. The Dream Catcher Tour coincides with the release of Brett Wildeman’s Kiln EP which is available for free download at https://mynameisbrettwildeman.bandcamp.com/ Catch the tour at the BlueBelle Bistro & Beanery in Kaslo on Thursday, March 19, Friday, March 20 at Sleep Is For Sissies in Winlaw, or Saturday, March 21 at Rossland Farmer’s Market in Rossland. For more information contact Sitka, Ethical Bean & Townsite Brewing at 604-7402876 or brettwildemanmusic@gmail.com

Fruits and vegetables: Are you eating enough? Sometimes in winter it’s hard to eat a healthy diet which incorporates all the food groups as recommended by the Canada Food Guide. Adults should eat seven to ten servings of fruits and veggies a day. Most Canadians still fall short of that. Here in BC, only around 40 per cent of us (age 12 and over) get five servings or more of vegetables and fruit a day so we clearly have some work to do. Copies of the Canada Food Guide are available at the Primary Health Centre.

How many servings of vegetables and fruit did you eat yesterday? Before you count, consider how big a serving size actually is. One serving of vegetables is half a cup chopped (fresh, frozen or canned) or one cup of raw leafy greens. One serving of fruit is half a cup chopped (fresh, frozen, or canned) or a whole medium sized fruit. A half cup of 100 per cent fruit or vegetable juice also counts as a serving but it is better to eat whole fruits and vegetables than to drink juice because fruit juices are a concentrated source of sugar and store bought vegetable juices are usually high in salt. Seven to ten servings of vegetables and fruit may sound like a lot. If you are not accustomed to it, the volume can seem daunting. Many vegetables are very low in calories so you do get a lot of nutrients, fibre, and disease fighting phytochemicals in very few calories. For example, a cup of spinach has just seven calories and provides fiber as well as vitamins and minerals like vitamin K, vitamin A, folate, magnesium, potassium, and iron that support good health. Here are some tips to help you get seven to ten servings a day. - Aim for half a plate of vegetables at lunch and supper. - Buy berries when in season. Freeze for easy nutritious desserts or for adding to smoothies or home baking. - After you shop, pre-pack baggies of chopped vegetables to bring to work or to send to school. - Keep frozen vegetables on hand for a quick and easy side dish. - Buy kale or spinach in season or on sale. Wash it, cut it and put it in the freezer to add to smoothies, soups, and sauces. - When you make a salad, prepare enough greens and cut up vegetables to have a salad another day. Learning how to properly store fruits and vegetables can save you time and money. For information on storing vegetables and fruit check out this website www.interiorhealth. ca/YourHealth/HealthyLiving/FoodSecurity/ Documents/Store%20it.pdf Author: Tara Stark is a community nutritionist with Interior Health. Measles in the Air With the recent outbreaks of measles being reported in the media, there has been a notable increase in discussion around the significance of immunization and the spread of this disease. To date, there has been no reported case of measles in the Interior Health Region, and thankfully the only thing being spread in the air is information and the chat of measles outbreaks occurring in other areas. As such, it is important to check the information being shared and the resource it is coming from. A lot of misconceptions and myths regarding measles and immunization safety are often spread, causing conflict and at times heated debate. Measles is the most contagious of all vaccine preventable diseases as it is spread in the air, and is a leading cause of death in children globally.

What is Measles and how is it spread? Measles, also known as red measles, is a severe illness caused by the measles virus. Measles can cause encephalitis, an inflammation or swelling of the brain, which can lead to seizures, deafness, or brain damage. Measles is very contagious and spreads easily. When an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes, the virus spreads through the air. The measles virus can survive in small droplets in the air for several hours. You can become infected when you breathe in these droplets or touch objects contaminated with the virus. The airborne spread of measles virus makes the disease very contagious. Sharing food, drinks or cigarettes, or kissing someone who has the virus can also put you at risk. Symptoms can start as soon as 7 days after a person is infected with the measles virus. A person with measles can spread the virus to others from 5 days before to 4 days after their rash first appears. Early symptoms of Measles are: • Fever • Cough • Runny nose • Red and inflamed eyes that are often sensitive to light Later symptoms of Measles are: • Rash, which starts first on the face and neck, and spreads to the chest, arms and legs, and lasts at least 3 days • Small white spots inside your mouth Key Messages • Measles is a highly contagious disease spread through the air and can be spread for 1-2 days before any of the above listed early symptoms develop • Individuals who have not been immunized are at risk of contracting the disease and spreading the disease to others • Immunization with MMR is safe and effective • Two doses of MMR or a measles containing vaccine protects against measles • Individuals who are susceptible (not fully immunized) pose a risk of disease transmission to others For more information and questions regarding measles or immunization, contact your doctor or the Public Health Nurse 250-353-2751. Soles 4 Souls
Soles 4 Souls Canada is back in Nelson starting March 1, and asking you to donate your gently used footwear. Soles 4 Souls is committed to helping people in the midst of extreme poverty and those recovering from natural disasters. We ask that the shoes have no holes and are in decent shape. All types of footwear, including sandals and boots, are gratefully accepted and needed. Please tie shoes together or use elastic bands to hold shoes in pairs. It’s also the green thing to do - when footwear breaks down the toxic glue that holds the shoes together can leak into our water supply and atmosphere. Please clean out your closets and donate your excess footwear to this important relief effort. Shoe drive ends on Sunday, March 29, so please donate now at any of the following places: Mark’s Work Warehouse, Save-On Foods, Vince Devito Shoes, Valhalla Pure Outfitters, Vogue Photographic, Streetclothes Named Desire, Shoes for the Soul, Snowpack Outdoor Experiences, Gaia Rising Metaphysical, and Nelson Husky.

Kootenay Studio Arts (KSA) student Josh Koss is piecing together history in an effort to explore his passion for medieval armour. Using ancient techniques mostly lost in time, Koss is using his training in the four-month Blacksmithing Program at KSA to forge replica helmets employed on the battlefields of Europe during the 15th Century. With hammer strokes and heat, the 25 year old is using his formal arts education to fuel his fascination with the past. “I’ve always been into knights and Vikings and medieval stuff,” says Koss, who is originally from Ottawa. “Ever since I was a kid, I would always get my mom to buy the plastic armour at Walmart. When I was 16, randomly browsing the internet looking up stuff about ninjas, I stumbled upon an article on how to make your own chainmail. Something just clicked in my brain: people actually make armour. I dove into it after that.” Koss is not the first KSA student to shape metal into replica armour, but his technique is something that hasn’t been tried at the Victoria Street Campus in Nelson. Throughout history, armour production has been a vital tool of warfare. A labour intensive process, prior to sheet metal the sweat equity that went into outfitting soldiers was extensive. The exact methods used by medieval armourers are in question, but modern scholars have put together clues using a detailed examination of extant historical armour. As part of his classwork, Koss researched a technique from the bucket makers of Bienno, Italy who have been forging deep steel vessels with water powered tools for hundreds of years. Using individual heavy plates of steel, Koss is using heat and the specially designed tools he created to hammer out his helmets. “He’s taking it back a step because it’s hundreds of years old,” says KSA Blacksmithing instructor Kevin Kratz. “It really gives everybody an idea how little things in metalworking have changed. It’s been exciting for everyone and we have all participated in it. It’s been educational.” Koss has received interest from armour makers around the world for the work he has done over the last few months. Though labour intensive—each helmet will take Koss at least 20 hours of work to complete from start to finish—there is a market for high end replicas. After graduation, Koss will continue to explore what his options for turning a passion into profit. “I have been at armour for six years and I’m almost at the point where if I put in another solid year of dedicated study I will have enough of an understanding to be able to go into business as producing plausible, historical armour reproduction,” he says. “It’s really the merging of the world of blacksmithing and modern armour making … I’m super excited about it.” Find out more about Kootenay Studio Arts online at selkirk.ca/school/arts.
Aquatic Centre Reno To Start In May The Nelson and District Aquatic Centre will close for renovations on May 1 and is expected to remain closed for eight months until construction is completed, the Regional District of Central Kootenay announced earlier this month. “While we had originally planned to begin renovating in April instead of May, the newly elected RDCK board and recreation commission required additional time to properly review and approve plans and budgets before the project could start,” said Joe Chirico, community services manager for the RDCK. The commission and board have now approved a $4.92 million budget with borrowing not to exceed $4.5 million for all renovations. All renovations are scheduled to be done by the end of 2015 so residents can enjoy the renewed facility in early 2016. Fixes will include new mechanical systems, electrical panels and equipment, a relocated lifeguard station, new sauna, pool decks, tiles and new water proofing membranes. Renovations will extend the life of the facility by at least another 40 years. “I’m relieved that construction is going ahead this spring. And like many area residents, I’m not looking forward to having the pool area closed for eight months, but I know this means we’ll all get to enjoy an improved aquatic centre for the next forty years,” said Nelson and District recreation commission chair Ramona Faust. The Nelson and District Community Complex arena, fitness area, meeting rooms and offices will remain open during renovations. Facility pass holders who have already purchased a pass that expires after May 1 will have the option to receive a pro-rated credit or refund while the aquatic centre is closed. The RDCK is in discussions with pool user groups to explore alternatives to the aquatic centre while renovations take place. The RDCK will continue to provide regular updates over the coming months.

War Is Coming To Nakusp!
So is fun, feasting, entertainment and workshops for the whole family! The Nakusp Medieval Society has partnered with the Society for Creative Anachronism to bring the SCA’s annual war here for the August long weekend. The SCA’s Kingdom of Avacal (eastern BC and Alberta) and the Principality of Tir Righ (western BC, northern Washington) will recreate a medieval encampment, complete with a village square market where guests can shop for historically accurate wares and period food and drink. This is a big event; as many as 500 SCA members are expected to take part, coming from the Lower Mainland, Washington State, and Alberta. SCA artisans will portray life with hands-on demonstrations of their crafts, creating beautiful and useful items from the Middle Ages. Although the list of craftspeople is still being compiled, visitors can look forward to displays and demonstrations of fibre arts, needlework, calligraphy, cooking and baking, lampwork, leatherwork and more. Wandering musicians and bards will perform, and a fashion show is planned. The event will be held at an 80 acre site on the Hot Springs Road, providing plenty of space and very little intrusion from the twenty-first century. It takes place August 1 and 2; tickets will be on sale mid-March at the website www. medievaldays.ca Medieval garb is not compulsory, but visitors are encouraged to have fun and dress up. The NMS will soon be taking applications from local artisans and food vendors, who must adhere to the time period, and be in costume. To add to the authenticity, there will be no electrical power on the site. Of course, the years between 600 and 1600 featured armoured knights and deadly accurate bowmen, and SCA members will battle it out for honours. Visitors can expect to see swordsmen with rapiers, and others with heavy swords. A full archery range and tournament, and an area for thrown weapons will be built for members, with the public welcome to watch. And if watching a battle makes you itch to get involved, you can! Visitors will be invited to don a helmet and swing a sword at a practice pole, or to shoot three arrows at a separate demonstration range, or to try their hand at thrown weapons like knives, spears and axes. The Nakusp Medieval Society was formed in 2014 to host this new event. The society, a non-profit organization, intends to create an annual event in Nakusp celebrating medieval culture. Three of the six volunteer directors were also involved in running the Nakusp Music Festival, bringing both organizational and hands-on experience to Nakusp Medieval Days. The NMS is raising money to hold the event. It has already secured $7,000 in seed funding; more sponsors and donors are always welcome. Memberships ($5) will go on sale at the same time as ticket sales start. For more information, visit the website: www.medievaldays.ca or email info@medievaldays.ca Submitted by Katrine Campbell
Call For Nominations: CKCA Steering Committee The Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA) invites members of the arts, culture and heritage community in the Columbia Basin to join its volunteer steering c committee. The CKCA is a representative body of the arts, culture and heritage communities across the Basin, and manages and administers arts, culture, and heritage funding programs on behalf of Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). The CKCA steering committee consists of 14 members: six from the West Kootenay, five from the East Kootenay, one from the Valemount area and two from the heritage sector. CKCA represents all the disciplines in the arts (visual art, music, theatre, dance, film/video and literary arts), culture and heritage; therefore, it is important to provide broad representation on the steering committee. CKCA is particularly interested in new members who represent youth or cultural diversity. Steering committee members are elected for two-year terms and represent the broader needs of arts, culture and heritage sectors in the Basin rather than individual arts councils or heritage organizations, or the communities in which they live. Nominees to the Steering Committee must have a strong background in arts, culture or heritage; should have experience in working on boards/committees; and must understand the needs and issues of the sector in order to develop funding programs/policies and adjudicate proposals. Members are expected to attend at least two meetings per year in various locations in the Basin. Nominees to the CKCA steering committee do not have to be members of any organizations, but must be nominated by their local community arts councils or by the Heritage Federation of South East BC (HFSEBC). Each eligible arts council may put forward only one nomination. If there are more arts council nominees in each region than seats available on the steering committee, regional elections will be held in the beginning of April. The HFSEBC may put forward one nomination this year. The HFSEBC nominee will be elected at its annual AGM. It is recommended that nominees (if elected) should be willing to attend occasional arts council or HFSEBC meetings to stay in touch with local/sector issues. Currently, community arts councils eligible for nominating representatives to the Steering Committee are: West Kootenay: Arrow Lakes (Nakusp Area), Nelson, Revelstoke, Rossland, Salmo (including Ymir), Slocan Lake (Silverton/New Denver) & Slocan Valley. East Kootenay: Columbia Valley (Invermere Area), Cranbrook, Creston, Fernie, Kimberley, and Sparwood and District. All other communities/sectors currently have a sitting steering committee member. For more information on the nomination process, please contact your local arts council or call CKCA at 1-877-505-7355. For more information on CKCA, please visit www.basinculture.com Deadline for arts council nominations is 5 pm PDT, Monday, March 23. Submitted by Natasha Smith Pennywise

The Nelson Public Library Slocan Valley Outreach at Passmore Lodge continues. At our next outreach session on Thursday, March 19, library members are invited to bring a board game and a friend for an afternoon of games at the Lodge. The library will supply tea, an Official Scrabble Dictionary and of course our mobile collection of books, CDs and DVDs for all ages. Passmore Lodge is the Nelson Library’s new official outreach location in the Slocan Valley. The common room at the Lodge is bright, roomy and inviting, the perfect spot for browsing, visiting and playing a wicked hand of Bananagrams. The Lodge is located at 3650 Passmore Road, just off Highway 6. Watch for our sandwich board at the turnoff to the Lodge. The outreach runs the third Thursday of each month from 3 to 7 pm. During our monthly outreach sessions, Area H South residents can sign up for a Nelson Library card and check out items from our rotating collection. Our friendly travelling librarian can answer your questions about our new BiblioCommons catalogue, downloading ebooks and audiobooks, and ordering books from other libraries. Did you know that library items can be delivered to Passmore for pickup? Please contact the Nelson Library for more information, 250-352-6333. Submitted by Margaret Tessman

Michael
Mloszewski It’s a daunting task to face, this presenting of some reflections about my brother after his death. He always loomed blessedly large for me and was a consistent source of support, encouragement, creative provocation and sheer beauty. I’m going to start by stepping aside from the responsibility and giving room for these words posted last year by his very close and longtime friend John Rushforth on his facebook page. I think ‘Michael is a very talented Kootenay musician and songwriter. Those you get a pretty good sense of Michael of you who know him, know that he has a super keen intellect, an from that… Michael was born in downtown Toronto on a winter day, January 22nd 1956, and spent his first four years there with his mother Ellen McDermid, who taught public school, and his father Mark Mloszewski who was in a science PhD program at U of T. Photographs taken on the shores of the great lakes Ontario and Huron with both sides of the family and in the Ontario bush show early introductions to the woods and waters that he showed such love for. He lived his most junior schooling years in, first, Ghana and then four years in Kenya where he went to boarding school and, as a large kid, he was pulling his weight beyond his years in team sports and mixing with the big boys. Meanwhile his younger brothers had joined him in the family – Roger in 1958 in Toronto and Adam in 1962 in Ghana; sister Aleksandra was born in 1983 in London, UK to his father Mark and his wife Magdalene. Michael returned to Toronto from Kenya (1968) and over the next year learned how to play guitar from a couple of Gordon Lightfoot’s early song books, moving on later to Bob Dylan and then the Beatles. He was sent off to St. John’s boys’ school near Selkirk, Manitoba at age 13 where his difficult, extraordinary and demanding experiences over the following five years provided a colourful and gritty world for discovery, exploration and sheer ingenuity. He often acknowledged the intense impact of that time and deep friendships were forged there that carried through until the end of his life. He struck out on his own, working in farming and logging, and working PAGE 48

immense vitality, and one of the most infectious laughs ever. He is a fearless seeker of spirit and explorer of consciousness. He is one of the best read and most articulate people I know despite never having gone to university. Throughout his ordeal he has maintained an incredibly upbeat spirit.’ John Rushforth for a period at a Winnipeg detox centre. When he was 18 he wrote a lot of poetry and was invited to join a group of much older writers who went by the name W3 (Winnipeg Writers Workshop) which was made up of novelists, poets, and songwriters – many successfully published – that led him onto the ground floor of the Winnipeg Folk Festival in 1974. He shared a house with the Artistic Director and his family for many years and had the great good fortune of spending time with many of the leading musicians of the day. There was a time when it looked like he was going to become a children’s entertainer, but he had other fish to fry, and by the end of his time in Winnipeg he was the Festival’s site coordinator and had helped organize the first Edmonton, Calgary, Canmore and Toronto Folk Festivals. Michael had a son, Ethan in 1980 and soon thereafter moved to BC where he became a treeplanter and homesteader in Argenta. Numerous songs and square dances later he was still at it to the end. He assisted several tours with Harry Manx including one that took them from New York to San Francisco; he opened for the Be Good Tanyas and played his own music throughout BC. He wrote, performed and recorded his own original music for many years and created a substantial body of work. His most recent work (the CD Pennywise
entitled ‘a place like this’) was written while facing his terminal cancer diagnosis... Michael included these comments in the cover notes on the CD jacket: ‘November 12 – 14, 2013 were magical days for me. Somehow I found myself in a great recording studio with six of Vancouver’s finest musicians playing and interpreting my songs. Choreographed and quarterbacked by Simon Kendall, this CD is a very live and largely spontaneous collaboration. My heartfelt thanks to all of you for sharing your time, talents and camaraderie during those days in the studio, and a special thanks to Linda for additional vocals, Caroline for her invaluable ears, suggestions and cover design and to Irena, who made it all possible.’ Michael died on September 4, 2014 in the Nelson Hospital. During his last couple of days, from his hospital bed in waking moments, Michael used his energy largely in speaking words of love, care and support for his son, family members, friends and his beloved partner Caroline. His kindness, generosity of spirit, insights and enthusiasm for life have touched all those who knew him in profound ways. Michael honoured and encouraged both the world and the people around him, and in so doing earned their everlasting respect and love
