Organizations located in Area E East are eligible to apply for funding for recreation programs, recreation services and building improvements for projects located in Area E East. Individuals wishing to access this grant program must do so under the sponsorship of an eligible community organization. The Recreation Commission #10 Strategic Plan priorities currently focus on recreation programs and services directed to pre-teens (ages 7-12) and seniors and to projects involving lake access and trail maintenance. Grants will generally be under $1000 per project but larger projects will be considered on their merits. Two building improvement projects will be considered for the 2014/15 fiscal year. The grant can be up to $2,500 with the applicant providing matching funds. Applicants must have all local, provincial and federal permits required for their proposal. Any proposal for delivery of recreation services to children will require criminal records checks to be conducted on service providers. Applications will be accepted electronically up to November 28, 2014 for programs or projects starting in early 2015. Grants are subject to approval of the RDCK board. FLIKS In Kaslo We’ve received the details of our first film, which is on Friday, November 14 at 7:30 pm, the night before our municipal elections. It’s a Nepali/US co-production called Manakamana. Filmed entirely inside a gondola which takes pilgrims and an occasional tourist high above Nepal’s lowland forests to a Hindu temple high in the mountains, it records the action in the gondola as 11 sets of passengers ride up and down. It’s a slow, meditative sort of film, exploring the ebb and flow between body and spirit, sacred and profane. The co-director, Stephanie Spray, has lived extensively in the area where she made this film and knows many of the actors, people from that area, very well. Selkirk College is offering tuition-free opportunities for unemployed and under-employed residents to get the training they need for careers in the transportation and forest industries.
Selkirk Offers Free Training Responding to specific needs in the region, Selkirk College has partnered with the federal and provincial governments in launching two tuition-free programs to get unemployed and under-employed residents the training they need to be job ready. Starting in November, eligible individuals have an opportunity to enrol in Professional Driver Training (Class 1) or Safety in Resource Industry (Forestry Training). â&#x20AC;&#x153;The programs are intended to provide enhanced employability opportunities for participants,â&#x20AC;? says Gregg Neelin, Manager of the Selkirk College Community Education & Workplace Training department. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our staff have been meeting with employers throughout the region and asking a simple question: Are you short of workers? And, if so, how many do you need this year, next year, and in five years? The responses from employers have guided our training plan and we are encouraged by the support we have received.â&#x20AC;? Employers in the trucking industry report a need for more than 120 Class 1 drivers annually and have endorsed the Professional Driver Class 1 Training program which Selkirk College has offered for the past two years in partnership with Mountain Transport Institute. Employers are offering their support to mentor participants through the four-week work experience module of the training program and participate in job readiness training. Cougar Annie Tales Cougar Annie Tales is a one-woman theatrical montage by Katrina Kadoski, in which she shares songs and scenes about the life and times of the infamous Cougar Annie, a fiesty pioneer woman from Vancouver Island. Ada Annie Rae-Arthur, later Ada Annie Lawson, but better known as Cougar Annie, (June 19, 1888 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; April 28, 1985) was a pioneer who settled near Hesquiat Harbour at Boat Basin in Clayoquot Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island. In 2007, Katrina moved to an off-the-grid historical homestead/garden located 33 miles North of Tofino that used to belong to a settler who became known as Cougar Annie. Shortly after arriving there Katrina began writing songs about Annieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very interesting life. While most of her research happened during the three years she spent on the land, she traveled around Vancouver Island, Manitoba and Alberta, conducting interviews with relatives, collecting photos, news clippings, and letters. All this research has resulted in a staged event which takes a look at one of British Columbiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most legendary female pioneers. Katrina has been a performer all her life. In the early years there were rotary music festivals, choirs, plays, and musical theatre. Then came the songs...she says she likes songwriting the most and singing is a close second. And she says that learning to play the guitar has been quite the journey, most days of which she likes as well. She says she started playing it because she couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t carry a piano to the beach. She likes playing banjo because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun, the piano because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much bigger than she is, and the didgeridoo, penny whistle, drum and harmonica because they are all meditative. Terrestrial Compensation Program Wild Voices For Kids This summer the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network launched a Kootenay-wide Corporate Challenge with the goal of attracting 10 Kootenay-based businesses to sponsor the Wild Voices for Kids Program. This program started over a decade ago and now offers 125 different curriculum-linked environmental education field trips and presentations led by 75 local experts across the Kootenays. Since 2009, CBEEN has offered these programs to 50,000 students in all of the region’s six school districts. However, demand for these programs continues to grow. In order to help meet this demand ten local businesses have come on board and offered their support. VAST Resource Solutions (Cranbrook), Kootenay Mountain Works (Kimberley), Kootenay Co-op (Nelson), Oso Negro Coffee (Nelson), Overwaitea Foods (Kimberley), The Heid Out (Cranbrook), Copper Point Resort (Invermere), Caliper Machine & Hydraulics (Cranbrook) Williams and Associates (Cranbrook) and Conservation by Design Inc. (Nelson) all contributed to this campaign. In the 2013-14 school year over 300 environmental and heritage programs by local experts were presented to over 7,000 students. Last year’s Wild Voices for Kids programs included hands-on fossil studies, snowshoeing adventures, and learning how animals survive even in extreme temperatures. Each presentation helps teachers to meet curriculum needs in a unique way, and is connected directly to our local environment. CBEEN also brought in Guest Educator Brian Keating, who is a renowned author, explorer, naturalist and professor. During his visit he treated hundreds of students to a special ‘Going Wild’ natural history presentation. “This was our fifth year of providing curriculum-linked programs to schools using local, passionate experts sharing their love and knowledge of the land, wildlife and ecosystems with children in the Basin. We couldn’t be happier with the number of students and the high quality of programming we offered in the last year!” said Susie MacDonald, Wild Voices for Kids Program Coordinator. “The Columbia Basin is leading by example, and is currently the only area in Canada where this type of programming exists. The Waneta Expansion Limited Partnership (WELP), a partnership between Fortis Inc., Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust, is accepting applications for the 2015 Waneta Terrestrial Compensation Program (WTCP). This program provides a total of $50,000 annually to projects in the Waneta area that promote conservation and restoration through research, physical works, and other on-the-ground or applied projects. Reptile And Amphibian Presentation Like them or not, wwhatever your viewpoint on reptiles and amphibians, an upcoming free presentation on Wednesday, November 12, will provide a perfect opportunity to learn more, and see them up-close and personal through some great photographs. Wildlife biologist and photographer, Jakob Dulisse, will present information about the amazing reptiles and amphibians that live in our area. He will provide tips on identification techniques, and what species you are likely encounter and where. Like many of our local “critters”, many have evolved incredible survival techniques that Jakob will share, as well as information on what work is being done to conserve and protect them. Listen to some tales from the field and bring your own reptilian and amphibian observations. The presentation is held at the Muriel Griffiths Room, (next to the Charles Bailey Theatre) Trail, at 7.00 pm, November 12. It is supported by Columbia Power Corporation and the Waneta Expansion Project, and hosted by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) in the Columbia Region. Locavores’ Feast At Vallican Whole It’s time to look over your harvest, haul out your best big serving dish, and head on down to the Vallican Whole Community Centre for the autumn Locavores’ Feast. On Saturday November 8, doors open at 5 pm and dinner is at 6 pm. This popular event, also known as the 100 Mile Potluck, has become a Slocan Valley tradition, an opportunity to have a great time with friends, family and neighbours, celebrating our local abundance and our vibrant community. To help everyone burn off some of the calories from this gustatory delight, the evening will wrap up with lively music from the Mental Health Club, the Slocan Valley’s favourite five-piece dance band. This party is also the kick-off for a “Raise the Red Roof ” fundraising campaign, where people will be able to buy a tile for a new roof, as part of a major energy refit for the building. Kootenay Gallery Presents Lizzy The Kootenay Gallery continues its ongoing concert series sponsored by TD Canada Trust on Sunday, November 9 at the Kootenay Gallery in Castlegar. The second concert in the series will showcase Lizzy Hoyt, an award-winning Canadian vocalist and songwriter who ranks among the top Celtic instrumentalists in the country. With the voice of an angel, Lizzy delivers music and stories with soaring melodies rooted in Celtic and folk traditions. Lizzy’s recently released fourth album, New Lady on the Prairie (produced by John Reischman and Lizzy Hoyt) demonstrates a mature and refined ‘transatlantic’ sound that blends influences from Celtic, bluegrass and folk traditions. The title track, inspired by Lizzy’s great-great aunt immigrating to Canada from Ireland in the early 1900s, demonstrates her ability to craft songs that are touching, poignant, and lyrically rich. Her arrangements are detailed and atmospheric, and her talents as a multi-instrumentalist are featured in spades. The album also features some of Canada’s finest musicians including John Reischman, Ivan Rosenberg, Joe Phillips, Christine Hanson, Jeremiah McDade and more. Lizzy’s music has been recognized on both the national and international level. She won “Best Female Artist” at the 8th International Acoustic Music Awards (a contest that saw over 11,000 applicants), was a Canadian Folk Music Award Nominee for “Traditional Singer of the Year,” and has been named a finalist in both the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and the USA Songwriting Competition. In addition to these, Lizzy was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Governor General of Canada for her outstanding contribution to commemorating Canadian veterans and history through music. This concert will take place at the Kootenay Gallery on Sunday November 9 at 1:30 pm. Tickets are $12 for Gallery members and $15 general admission.
