Summit Lake’s Toadfest Is Back School summer holidays may be winding down, but there is at least one more family oriented activity to place in the calendar before they are completely over: Toadfest 2014! The free event at Summit Lake Provincial Park just south of Nakusp, will be held on Tuesday, August 26 between 4 and 7 pm and on Wednesday, August 27 between 10 am and 1 pm. Toadfest is an opportunity for the public to get up-close and very personal with the western toads, especially the tiny toadlets, of Summit Lake. Attendees can search for, collect, and safely transport the toadlets across the highway. The event is to both help the western toad population at Summit Lake, and to raise awareness about their natural history, habitat needs, and the challenges that they face. Every year, for example, tens of thousands of toadlets, each not more than the size of a dime, get squashed by vehicles as they attempt their first migration from the shoreline of Summit Lake, across Highway 6, to upland habitat. Toadfest is coordinated each year by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP), with support from BC Parks, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Columbia Basin Trust, and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. “While they are still relatively strong in numbers at Summit Lake, their distribution is shrinking and the centre of the world’s distribution has shifted from the USA to BC,” says Trevor Oussoren, program manager for the FWCP in the Columbia region, a partnership between BC Hydro, the Province of BC, First Nations and public stakeholders. “They are an indicator of ecological health and an important part of complex food web, so it’s extremely important that we look after them.” The event, now in its fifth year, provides an excellent opportunity to talk to biologists, and get hands-on experience at helping an amphibian in need. Western toads are listed federally as a species of concern and are blue-listed (vulnerable) in the province. In addition to helping toadlets safely across the highway, there will be other activ-
ities to see and do, including live aquatic insects, amphibians, and reptiles on display, as well as information on invasive plants, bears and other wild animals living in the region. “The very dry, warm weather we experienced in July and early August seems to have resulted in the migration being one to two weeks earlier than usual,” says event organizer Angus Glass. “So we may not be hitting its peak, but still intend to safely carry as many toadlets across the road as possible.” The public are reminded not to collect or transport any toadlets across the highway outside of this organized event. Camping spaces at Summit Lake Provincial Park cannot be reserved. Ravencourt Features The Classics At Their Final Concert Friday, September 5 will see an evening of classical music on violin and piano highlighting the final concert of the season at Ravencourt B&B in Upper Passmore. Beginning at 7 pm Martine denBok will be featured on violin and will be accompanied on piano by Kevin Heshedahl with special musical guests appearing throughout the evening. Martine moved to Nelson in 2013, after teaching and performing in the Victoria area for several years. When not performing with the Symphony of the Kootenays, the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, Edmonton¹s Opera Nuova orchestra, or touring with Victoria¹s DieMahler String Quartet; she can be found teaching an ever increasing group of aspiring violinists in the area. Pianist/vocalist and conductor Kevin Heshedahl has been a musical part of Martine’s life since she was 12 years old. Some of the musical selections being played in this magical straw-bale B&B include: Sonata for Violin and Piano by Jean-Marie Leclair; two Boleros by Bohm and German; show pieces by Monti, Elgar, Kreisler and Weiniawski; and Singing the Night Among Fishing Boats by Li Guo Quan. It’s been an amazing series of musical events at Ravencourt this season and the final performance will likely be as rewarding as the previous ones. Close your eyes and picture this; it’s the first hot day of the year, the sun is shining, birds are chirping, and everything around is lush, green, and pristine. The lakes and rivers seem to sparkle and dance under the sun’s warm rays. You’re heading out to spend this Kootenay summer day with friends kayaking and mountain biking, taking advantage of all this incredible region has to offer. While we are extremely fortunate to live in an area with such amazing outdoor facilities, it is important to remember the impact we have on the environment around us, especially when it comes to the spread of invasive species. Whether you’re into hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, or an array of other outdoor activities, the Kootenay region is the place for you. However what should we be keeping in mind in terms of our impact on the environment around us? When it comes to the prevention of the spread of invasive species, there are many things we can do to help while enjoying the outdoors. Play-Clean-Go, an initiative dedicated to help curb the spread of invasives, states, “Invasive species have many pathways of spread. For instance, weed seeds move easily in soil so, muddy boots or vehicles can move weed seeds. Some weed seeds have special hooks to help them hitch a ride. Thus, weed seeds can spread on our shoes, socks, clothing, and pets.” However, the transportation of pesky weeds through soil is just one aspect of our trouble with invasive species. The
Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC), has discovered many cases where water-born invasives have hitched rides on vessels such as boats, kayaks, and other water equipment that has then been reintroduced into our lakes and rivers, thus causing damage. By learning how to inspect and clean our equipment and belongings, we can begin to reduce the chance of inadvertently spreading something that could harm the pristine outdoor environment we so cherish. Here are a few tips to keep in mind this summer; • During campfire season use only local or certified firewood; if you are travelling make sure all the wood you bring is used before returning home • While hiking, walking, or biking make sure to stay on designated trails designed for this purpose • Leave clean! Before returning home make sure to check your belongings and remove any dirt, plants, or bugs to prevent an invasive species from tagging along! • Although summer is an amazing time of year in our Kootenay region, it is important to remember the impacts our outdoor activities have on the spread of invasive species. This is an issue that affects everyone, and in order to maintain our incredible surroundings it is up to us to become informed, attentive, and accountable in preventing the spread of invasive species. Dark Fire Cloud At Silverton
Dark Fire Cloud and The Lightning Band (DFC) perform at Silverton Memorial Hall on Thursday, August 21. Doors open at 7:30 pm, show starts at 8:30 pm, $10 admission at the door. This dance band performs music inspired by zydeco, gospel, soulful R&B and reggae. Front man Dark Fire Cloud (Thadeus Cloud Prejean) hails from Louisiana. With his echo harmonica strapped on, he is the lead vocalist and guitarist, and has a musical style distinctly his own. He is joined by Shuggy Milligan on percussion and J Buttle on bass. This is highly danceable music! Dark Fire Cloud and the Lightning Band (DFC) is the product of a lifelong partnership between Hugh (Shuggy) Milligan and Thadeus (Cloud) Prejean. The zydeco music of the Louisiana ghettos, the spiritually elevating gospel of the southern Baptist tradition, and the soulful R&B sounds reverberating throughout all Americana have helped form Cloud’s musical style. In early 2013, Cloud and Shuggy were joined by bassist J Buttle. With the rhythmic foundation set by Shuggy and J, Darkfire Cloud and the Lightening Band.
