October 17 – 23 is National School Safety Week, and the Canada Safety Council wishes to remind parents to remain actively involved in field trip risk management. 1. Carefully read the field trip material and if necessary, contact the school for clarification. This can include requesting information such as details about any past incidents, how many adult supervisors will be present, their qualifications and the educational value of the trip. Make sure you understand the purpose of the trip, proper attire and/or equipment your child needs to participate safely. 2. If you volunteer to accompany the field trip, make sure you know the safety procedures and assigned duties for each adult. Even if your school allows younger siblings to come along, consider finding other care for them so you can devote your full attention to your supervision duties. 3. Before the trip, have a talk with your child about safety precautions, such as the importance of staying with the group, and what to do if separated from the group. If you have any questions or concerns, discuss these with the school. If you still don’t feel comfortable, don’t give your child permission to go and don’t sign the permission slip. Check our website at www.canadasafetycouncil.org leading up to National School Safety Week for more information and activities related to field trip safety. Like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/canada.safety and follow us on Twitter @CanadaSafetyCSC.

Eyes In The Forest

When you see a pygmy owl or a mountain sheep caught on film by Jim Lawrence, it’s impossible not to wonder how the acclaimed wildlife photographer got such an astonishing shot. Filmmaker Miriam Needoba set out to find the answer, stomping through forest and marsh in all weather and times of day. Her short film Eyes in the Forest: The Portraiture of Jim Lawrence marries the art form of still images and cinematography – and answers the question. L a w r e n c e’s photographs are on display at the Nelson Public Library September through October, with a special artist reception and film screening on Tuesday, October 7 at 7 pm. “I wanted to provide an experience, an intimate view of this world that is often hidden from sight but is deeply impacted by human action,”

says Needoba about the film. “I hoped that representing their world, and Jim’s experience of it, would inspire greater empathy and understanding for the wildlife we so admire.” The film reflects Lawrence’s approach as ethical photographer and environmentalist, but it also offers insight into the ways that Lawrence sees the subtlety and richness of the land and its inhabitants. This is evidenced in the photographs on display – the wind lifting the fur of a coyote or the glint in the eye of a bear with a fish. It’s clear that Lawrence is at home in the wilderness. “It is a privilege and a profound honour to observe these animals,” says Lawrence. Both artist and filmmaker will be on hand to talk about their experiences at the reception and screening.

The popular random annual hike, organized by Wildsight and the West Kootenay EcoSociety, attracted wilderness fans from Invermere, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Nelson, Kaslo and Argenta, and coincided with the splendour of the autumn larches. The Jumbo Monitoring Camp, located at the junction of Leona and Jumbo creeks, will stay functional until mid October. For more information, www.KeepItWild.ca

Dance Your Feet Off As part of the Langham’s 40th Anniversary on Thanksgiving weekend, the Langham is hosting a Dance-Your-Feet-Off Dance at The Kaslo Legion just like the OLD TIMES! Get ready to boogie the night away with some of Kaslo and the West Kootenay’s favourite dance bands and musicians. Michael Guthrie (visionary extraordinaire), who spearheaded the SAVE-THE-LANGHAM movement back in the early 70s, has put together an amazing line-up of music including Tom and Jerry and The 98s, The Roosters (yes!…with

all those usual suspects!), Swing Shift with Tom and Ruth Thomson and Trish Feenie, Chris Lingard, Bill Lynch, Michael Dorsey and Leah Main, and of course, Michael Guthrie himself…there may even be a few more guest surprises! As part of the fun, many of the Langham’s founding folks from the 70s are making their way from across Canada and the US (and even Europe!) back to Kaslo for this weekend. Spread the word to your away-buddies! Better get your tickets in advance…this is expected to sell-out. Saturday, October 11, doors open at 8 pm. Tickets in advance $12, available in Kaslo at Willow Home Boutique and Sunnyside Naturals; in Nelson at Otter Books and Eddy Music. More info at the Langham 250-353-2661 or visit www.thelangham.ca. See you there in your dancing shoes!!

Living Room Cafe In Kaslo Kaslo’s Amnesty International group is honoured to host an evening at Dan and Shelley’s on Friday October 3 with the internationally acclaimed Guatemalan activist Sandra Moran. Sandra has worked with the Guatemalan women’s and feminist movement for the past 20 years and has helped to change the face of the women’s rights movement in Guatemala. She lived in exile in Canada from 1980-1994, returning to Guatemala to co-found the Women’s Sector, an alliance of 33 women’s rights groups throughout Guatemala, and to participate in the Civil Society Assembly at the negotiations for the Peace Accords that ended Guatemala’s 36-year civil war. As a representative of the Women’s Sector, Sandra was the driving force and founder of the National Women’s Forum, a body that generated participation and proposals for women’s public policy after the signing of the Peace Accords. In 2006, she co-founded Artisan House (Casa Artesana) in Guatemala City as a an alternative meeting place and artistic space for women and other groups facing discrimination. Sandra also expresses her activism through music, and has played a strong role in the revolutionary feminist musicians’ movement. Casa Artesana provides services to promote the economic self-sufficiency and wellbeing of the 12,000 women in Guatemala’s 9 prisons. One such program is collecting clothing donations, which give women materials to sew and sell handcrafts to other inmates and visitors. Casa Artesana also advocates for improved living conditions in the prisons, and does political education trainings so that women will understand their rights. This is an evening not to be missed. Everyone is welcome. Friday, October 3, 7 pm social, coffee, goodies; 7:30 pm discussion. 628 Arena Avenue. Info: Linda Lynch 353-7457.

The public is invited to a free screening of the movie Breastmilk on October 1, 12 pm in the Multipurpose Room of the Nelson Health Unit (2nd Floor, 333 Victoria Street). A light lunch will be provided. This 90-minute film explores breastfeeding in relation to current female roles, expectations and ideals. This film takes a broad view on some of the real-life predicaments that may make it difficult to achieve both personal and societal goals with regards to breastfeeding. To view the movie trailer, visit: http://breastmilkthemovie.com/trailer.html. All are welcome to attend this free film screening! In an effort to normalize breastfeeding in our community, Nelson and area women are invited to share their breastfeeding photographs in downtown store windows from October 1 to 7. The intent is to display as many breastfeeding photos as possible! Women are invited to submit breastfeeding photos to nelsonbreastfeeds@gmail. com. Any Nelson businesses who would like to participate in a breastfeeding window display should also contact: nelsonbreastfeeds@gmail.com

This handsome neutered brindle coonhound was a transfer from the South Okanagan BCSPCA on September 22, 2014. His name is Horace and he is approximately 5 years old. Horace is your typical coonhound! A common misconception about coonhounds is that they are “laid back, and will lie around most of the time, doing nothing. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Coonhounds are very high energy dogs that need an owner who can commit to give them a lot of daily exercise, and once trained, can be great jogging partners. Horace does get bored easily and will bark to reduce his anxiety, this being another reason to make sure he is exercised throughout the day. He is very friendly and loves to be around people, and loves the water! He is also great with other nonreactive dogs and hasn’t reacted to the cats while in shelter. If you have knowledge of this great breed and are looking for a new hound to be a part of your life, please contact the Trail Regional BCPSCA at 250-368-5910 or trail@spca.bc.ca

Dirk Tensen Rinehart ClassifiedPidcock Header

Of Kaslo, BC died at home peacefully, September 18, after nearly two years of significant health issues. He was predeceased by his parents Grant and Betty Rinehart of Nyssa, Oregon. He will be lovingly missed by his wife of fifty-two years, Karen Enstrom Rinehart Pidcock, children Ann Rinehart of Nanaimo, Nathan Rinehart of Golden, Asia Sung Rinehart of Toronto, and grandson Jordan Rinehart of Campbellville, Ontario; sisters: Kristin Ginther (Daniel) of Central Point, Oregon, Gretchen Kimsey (Rustin) of The Dalles, Oregon, Jan Rinehart of Portland, Oregon, and Triena Hiatt of Ontario, Oregon; sister-in-law, Gretchen Cloke of Tacoma, Washington; two aunts, one uncle, many cousins, nephews and nieces. Dirk was born February 1, 1939, in Nyssa, Oregon. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1961, studied theology

at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California in preparation for the Episcopal priesthood. He then served three parishes in the Diocese of Eastern Oregon, before moving with his family in 1978 to direct the Sorrento Centre of the Anglican Church of Canada. From 1984 to 1991, he served as associate priest at Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver.

Moving to Kaslo in the Diocese of Kootenay in 1991, Dirk and Karen served the seven congregations in

Nakusp, New Denver, Kaslo, Balfour, Willow Point, Nelson, and South Slocan. As Missioner of the Kokanee region for twelve years, Dirk was a pioneer in developing innovative ways the Anglican Church might continue to know a healthy presence in communities that have difficulty supporting traditional ministries. Dirk believed each faith community had all the gifts necessary to be alive to the teachings of Jesus…caring for one another and for the world about them…ever-building the spiritual strength and confidence of the membership. He ended his professional life as Archdeacon of the Kootenays, while serving voluntarily as priest to the end.

Dirk, as a lover of the natural world, became an avid birder, initiating and leading other keen birders of the

North Kootenay Lake area, and more recently enjoyed wildlife photography. Throughout his life he loved caring for animals, including many cat and dog companions, raised goats, rabbits, and chickens and grew food in the garden. He loved fishing and camping trips with his family and Kaslo godchildren. He served as president of the Kaslo Hospice Society and served on the board of the Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake Society. Both in Vancouver and Kaslo, Dirk encouraged and supported refugee sponsorship, and served three years on the board of the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund of the Anglican Church of Canada. Although a diagnosis of chronic leukemia slowed him down during the past two years of treatment, he continued living life to the fullest, with gratitude for each new day. He and Karen were so grateful for the compassionate medical care received in both the Kaslo Health Centre and the Nelson Hospital, especially acknowledging Dr. Phillip Malpass and the nurses on the chemo ward. Most who were privileged to know Dirk will greatly miss the gentle, supportive and kind person he was.

The Memorial Eucharist will be October 3, Friday, 1:30 pm at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, followed by a

reception at St. Andrew’s Hall, Kaslo. In lieu of any flowers, the family welcomes donations either to Kootenay Lake Hospital, [3 View St. Nelson BC V1L 2V1] or to “St. Mark’s Church – Together in Mission Campaign” [Box 1059 Kaslo BC V0G 1M0] Online condolences may be expressed at www.thompsonfs.ca .

Construction has started on a six-unit townhouse family complex in Creston. The complex, containing four three-bedroom, and two two-bedroom layouts, will be conveniently located near transit, grocery stores, commercial services and a secondary school as well as green spaces. The structure will feature a low-profile design, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the surrounding homes. Construction is scheduled to be completed by late 2015. This will offer more affordable housing options for low-income families in the Creston area. The project is part of the Affordable Rental Housing initiative, which is a $10-million, three-year program that is a result of federal, provincial and Columbia Basin Trust investments; the Government of Canada and Province of BC are providing a combined investment of $5 million, while the Trust is contributing another $5 million. “Columbia Basin Trust is committed to supporting initiatives throughout the Basin that contribute to the well-being of our communities, and affordable housing is just one example of this commitment,” said Neil Muth, President and CEO. “We congratulate the co-operative efforts and hard work of all the partners and community members connected with the projects.”

HOPLIND, BYRON

Fritz Furtner

February 26, 1950 - September 24, 2014 Fritz passed away on Wednesday, September 24th of pancreatic cancer. Many will know Fritz from the Plaza Bakery in Castlegar, his business of 30 years. A celebration of Fritz Furtner’s life will be held at the Castlegar Community Complex on Wednesday, October 1st from 2 pm to 5 pm. All are welcome to share your favourite stories with loved ones as we remember him.

[\

April 15, 1922 to September 1, 2014

The elder son of Norwegian immigrants, Byron was born in Rossland, spent his early years in Coryell, worked in the Salmo mines, and his long life came to an end in Passmore, BC. At LV Rogers High School in Nelson he was a star basketball player, playing tournaments throughout the province. He worked as a miner all his life, mostly at the HB and Emerald mines and later in Trail. As well as operating every type of heavy equipment, Byron was often a trouble-shooter, blasting dangerous overhangs and salvaging stuck gear. After retirement, he lived in the home his father had built in Passmore, gardening and mushroom-picking, scything his field, feeding wild birds and tending the blackberries that he gave to his neighbours. Byron was a life-long vegetarian with a strong pioneer spirit. He was a well-read person, a self-educated thinker with little use for “jackasses”. Byron will be missed by many friends and neighbours. Special thanks to RN Margo McLean and the Interior Health Home Support team, Drs. Barbour, Cochrane and Janz, Dorothy Mackenzie of Valhalla Riversuites, staff at Mountain Lake Seniors Community and many local supporters who respected Byron’s wish to live independently for as long as possible. An informal remembrance of Byron will be held on Saturday, October 18 from 2 to 4 pm at the Passmore Hall.

The Future Of The Columbia River

BC Hydro At Work Crews lower the Kootenay Canal and extend its lifespan by 50 years. BC Hydro crews have dewatered the Kootenay Canal as part of a project that will ensure the Kootenay Canal Generating Station maintains safe and reliable operations. The project is taking place along the Kootenay River in order to upgrade the canal’s lining. Extremely durable and specialized geotextile material designed for water storage in canals and reservoirs is being used. The material is expected to extend the lifespan of the canal by about 50 years, and the total project cost is $10 million. Approximately 108,000 square feet of the material will be installed along the north and south sides of the canal. Completed in 1976, the waterway feeds the Kootenay Canal Generating Station and is approximately 16,500 feet long. It has a water depth of 50 feet and water flows of 27,000 cubic feet per second. Nearly 70 workers are involved with this project from planning to project completion. This includes engineers, safety experts, construction workers and environment workers. Up to about 35 people will be onsite at any given time while the canal work takes place in September and October. BC Hydro is also taking steps to make sure it continues to meet operations requirements while the project work is underway, and water in the Kootenay River continues to be used efficiently. Crews will continue to reroute water through the Corra Linn Dam along the Kootenay River. Some water is also being stored in Kootenay Lake while the Kootenay Canal is dewatered and the generating station is out of service. The stored water can then be used for generation when the facility returns to service. Walking trails along the canal will remain accessible through the duration of the maintenance work. To ensure public safety, BC Hydro has installed safety signage along the trails. The time-lapse video link below shows the dewatering of the Kootenay Canal. Registration is filling up fast for the international conference “Learning From Our Past to Shape Our Future”,to be held October 21 to 23 in Spokane Washington. Major transboundary themes will be explored such as ecosystem management, salmon restoration, climate change, energy, transboundary river governance and regional issues like the Columbia River Treaty. The conference agenda will feature unique and interactive tools that ensure all participants help drive the discussion and stay engaged, such as: • A “Thinking Wall” where participants will post their thoughts and comments as well as ask questions. This information will be used throughout the conference to inform discussions and drive the conversation in breakout sessions. There is also an opportunity for participants to bring forward a topic and lead a discussion during the conference in the open theme session. • Art and Culture exhibits and performances throughout the three-day event that include visual and performing artists as well as films and exhibits. • Graphic facilitation tools that create a visual story board over the course of the conference to help visualize emerging ideas and make important connections. Participants will also hear from keynote speakers including the Honourable Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines for the Province of British Columbia, and author and historian Jack Nisbet. A post-conference report will identify key issues for next steps. This report will be posted at columbiabasin-2014conference.org. Co-hosted by Columbia Basin Trust and the Northwest Power and Conservation Council and made possible by the support of many sponsor organizations, the conference will be of interest to a wide audience including: fish and wildlife organizations, power agencies, Indian Tribes and First Nations, environmental and energy groups, and government organizations from both countries. This is the fourth conference co-hosted by the Trust and Council since the late 1990s. It will be co-chaired by two former chairs of the respective organizations: Garry Merkel of Kimberley, BC, and Larry Cassidy of Vancouver, Washington. A planning team of approximately 40 people from BC and the US – representing a range of interests – helped shape the conference agenda. Register and learn more at columbiabasin-2014conference.org. About Columbia Basin Trust and the Northwest Power and Conservation Council: Columbia Basin Trust supports efforts by people in the Canadian Columbia Basin to create a legacy of social, economic and environmental well-being. To learn more about Trust programs and initiatives, visit cbt.org. The Council is an agency of the states of Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, which share the majority of the Columbia River Basin in the United States. Under the Northwest Power Act of 1980, the Council is responsible for assuring the Northwest region an adequate, efficient, economical and reliable power supply while protecting, mitigating and enhancing fish and wildlife affected by hydropower dams in the Columbia River Basin. nwcouncil.org HAVE AN ARTICLE OF LOCAL INTEREST? Clean-Drain-Dry August is the height of summer for those of us in the Kootenay region, and by this time, most of us have taken countless hours of refuge in the cool waters of our lakes and rivers. Boating is such a common practice during the summer months that it would be unusual, and strange, to see a lake unadorned by these vessels in our region. However, how many of us know the invasive species lurking about in our waters? Or even that there were such things? What if I told you that boating and swimming might one day turn into a distant memory if invasives, such as zebra and quagga mussels, were to infiltrate our waters? I think I speak for everyone when I say, no thank you! Zebra and quagga mussels are invasive aquatic species that pose a serious threat to the biodiversity and fisheries of any water system. An impact of zebra and quagga mussels is to reduce the amount of food available for native fish, such as salmon and trout, as well as a vast variety of other organisms. Some species that are dependent on plankton, for example sockeye salmon and kokanee, could be severely depleted if these mussels become established in BC’s lakes and rivers. Another, and very important problem of these invasive mussels is that they deplete the natural balance of algae, leading to higher concentration of blue-green algae. As the Invasive Species Council of British Columbia (ISCBC) states, “high levels of blue-green algae can become toxic to aquatic life, can cause taste and odor problems in drinking water supplies, and can be very unpleasant for recreational users.” Since these pesky aquatic creatures originate from Eurasia, they have no known predators to keep them under control in Canada. Since arriving in North America during the mid-

FALL TIRE

SALE

1980s, they have spread rapidly throughout the Great Lakes in Ontario, Quebec, and over 20 US states as well. By attaching and colonizing themselves on boats and other water equipment such as engines, hulls, and steering components these devastating invasive species have spread almost without hindrance. Luckily for us in the Kootenays, as well as the rest of BC, these aquatic hitchhikers have not yet been detected in our pristine waters, although monitoring activities in BC have been quite limited in this regard. However, there is much we can do to help prevent these mussels from ever entering our area. The Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC) urges all boaters to clean, drain, and dry their boats and water equipment on dry land before and after entering any water bodies to remove any visible mud, plants, or fish. As well, if a boat has come from a known or suspected mussel-infested area, it must be completely drained and allowed to dry for 30 days before entering a new body of water. Our sparkling and clean lakes, rivers, and streams are perhaps one of the most glorious advantages to living in the Kootenay region. Whether it is fishing, boating, or swimming I’m sure there are few who can say they do not utilize our waters for recreational purposes in some way. Therefore it is up to us to make sure we are protecting this part of our landscape from future invasive species. Perhaps Crystal Klym, Executive Director for CKIPC, said it best, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. By preventing these species from entering our lakes and rivers, we can save millions of dollars in impacts in the future.” You can help stop the spread of invasive species! For more information please visit: www.ckipc.ca or http://bcinvasives. ca/resources/programs/clean-drain-dry/

Jumbo Update Autumn 2014

• To Place Your Ad Call 1-800-663-4619 •

The following information is derived from two recent phone interviews with my government contact person, the Manager of Major Projects with Resort Development, and my other government contact person, Manager of Policy and Compliance with the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO). Glacier Resorts, Ltd. (GRL), parent corporation of the Jumbo Resort development, has made applications for the following development components within the Controlled Recreation Area base area of Jumbo Mountain Resort Municipality Phase #1: roads, day lodge, service building, water reservoir, lift line. Each would have tenures with development conditions. On October 12, Glacier Resorts’ final 5 year Temporary Conditional Certificate will be finished. Preceding and after that date, Mary Polak, Minister of Environment, and perhaps Associate Deputy Minister Doug Caul will do air and on-theground assessments looking for indications of a “substantial start”. Then they will deliberate. There is no timeline for a yes or no decision to be made public. If yes, Glacier Resorts will receive a permanent EAO certificate. It will have the same 195 conditions as the currently terminating 5 year conditional certificate. If no, the company could apply for another EAO full resort development assessment. Or, maybe, if on October 12 there’s nothing much to lose, they could walk away. The Ktunaxa judicial review appeal is filed but no court date. The Eco-Society’s judicial review has been accepted but no court date has been announced. Submitted by Rowena Eloise, Argenta, for the West Kootenay Coalition for Jumbo Wild
