from pg 5 Oakley summoned enough courage to ask the first Nelson person: “May I take your photograph?” It became an internet sensation when more that 5,000 people “liked” Humans of Nelson on Facebook, and hundreds of people would watch the page each day for the next posted photograph. Now, it’s a beautiful hardcover book. Humans of Nelson, the book, launches with a special slide presentation on Saturday, November 15 at the Nelson Civic Theatre. The free event runs from 2 to 5 pm; the slide show begins at 3 pm. “It’s exciting to launch the book at the Civic,” says Oakley. “It allows me to talk about some of the images in the book by showing them on the big screen, and there’s enough room for everyone who wants to come.” The 232 page book features more than 125 photographs of all kinds of people seen on the streets of Nelson. It celebrates the interactions between humans when trust is established and barriers removed. Humans of Nelson is at times thoughtful and poignant, or playful and funny. “Everyone I met had a story,” says Oakley. “Sometimes it was hard to find the courage, but then I’d think: ‘Go: you never know what amazing person you might meet today.’ Every person I met had something to tell me that made me think, or empathize, or laugh. It’s been a terrific experience.” Humans of Nelson was financed in part through a Kickstarter campaign that raised $10,000 in just two weeks. Oakley is encouraging people who pre-ordered the book through the campaign to pick up their copies at the launch. There will also be copies on hand for sale and the popcorn is free.

New Opera Gets Under Way The Amy Ferguson Institute announced recently that their production company, Nelson Community Opera (NCO), will hold auditions next month for the principal solo roles in their November, 2015 world premiere of the new Canadian opera, Jorinda, created by Nelson-based composer, Doug Jamieson. Jamieson, who is also serving as the production’s musical director, explained that the auditions for the solo roles will take place on Saturday, November 22 in Nelson. “We will only audition for the soloists at this time. Auditions for the chorus and also for puppeteers will be held in the spring of 2015. Since Jorinda is scored for soprano, alto, contralto and tenor roles, baritones and basses are not required,” Jamieson noted. “As part of the audition, we will be asking singers to learn and perform segments from Jorinda as well as performing a song of their choice. More information about Jorinda including the music singers will be asked to learn for the audition can be downloaded from the Productions page on the AFI website at www.amyfergusoninstitute. ca,” Jamieson concluded. The show also requires a number of puppets for the minor characters in the story. When all the various puppets have been completed we can then begin the process of auditioning, training and rehearsing the corps of puppeteers needed to bring the puppets to life on the stage.” “We are taking a multi-layered approach to the design of the opera,” stage director, Geoff Burns explained. “The use of puppets has allowed us to explore a variety of ways to use visual imagery to tell the story. The complex interaction of lighting, set design, projected images, and the puppets themselves give us a rich pallet with which to work. Know Your Watershed The gorgeous fall weather had Kootenay schools out in their local creeks and rivers learning about the water systems that sustain their communities. Know Your Watershed, an environmental education program funded by Columbia Basin Trust and delivered by Wildsight, gets Grade 8 students out from behind their desks and into the field. Now in its fifth year, Know Your Watershed delivers programs in 24 schools in 18 communities. Clad in rain boots and clutching clipboards, the students test water quality, inventory aquatic life, visit water distribution and treatment plants and connect with community water groups. The goal of the program is to provide hands-on learning about watersheds and water-related issues in order to inspire and equip students to look after this precious resource. Submitted by Wildsight

Celtic Music In Rossland! The Rossland Council for Arts and Culture annual Performance Series continues on Saturday, November 8. Winter Tire Safety Tips After October 1, most of British Columbia’s rural drivers are expected to be using winter tires by law. Due to the possibility of unpredictable winter weather on mountain passes, the stipulated dates range from early fall to early spring. Because British Columbia’s climate zones can range from freezing with a lot of snow to mild and slushy, tires are a huge safety consideration. Tires marked with the pictograph of a peaked mountain with a snowflake meet specific snow traction performance requirements, and have been designed specifically for use in severe snow conditions. Tires marked “M + S” – or “mud and snow” tires, also known as “all-season” tires – continue to provide safe all-weather performance, but may not always be suitable for severe snow conditions. Wide, high performance tires, other than those that are specifically designed as snow tires, are not suitable for use on snow covered roads. Remember: • Install four winter tires – To help maintain control and stability of your vehicle in icy conditions, Transport Canada and the Rubber Association of Canada recommend that you install winter tires in sets of four. • Mixing tires with different tread patterns, internal construction, and size degrades the stability of the vehicle and should be avoided. • As a tire wears, snow traction is reduced. Tires that are worn close to the tread-wear indicators have reduced traction and should not be used on snow-covered roads or in severe snow conditions. • Proper air pressure extends tread life, improves safety, and reduces fuel consumption – all vital factors in saving energy and protecting the environment. Tire pressure decreases as temperatures drop, so be sure to check the pressures at least once a month when the tires are cold, preferably after the car has been out all night.
