Equine Assisted Learning

I have been involved with Equine Assisted Learning in the Kootenay’s EAL program for over five years now. I am fascinated with how it appeals to so many different children. Things such as communication and body language are huge skills that we rely on in every aspect of our days, affording us great success if we are able to master the process. We were able to see a great example of that this session with a young boy, who when he first came to us, was not even able to participate for five minutes, let alone work with a peer or follow direction. However, by the time the sixteenth session was completed, he had dramatically improved his communication skills and was able to function at a much higher level. For example, at the graduation exercise he was working with another young girl who usually barrels through and takes over. The two children came to an obstacle where they had to re-halter a horse head, ie: take off the halter on the statue and replace it with a new one. The two children worked together for almost 20 minutes and after four attempts, finally found success. They discussed the problem between them, made a plan, carried it out, realized the plan didn’t work, made another one and carried on, as a team, until they found success. All this from a little boy who couldn’t focus for five minutes, found it difficult to interact with peers and disengaged immediately when something was too hard!!! I love that this little boy was able to find such huge success whilst working beside older and younger children, kids with higher and lower functioning skills, kids with different personalities and backgrounds. It never ceases to amaze me that each individual can get so much and so many different things from the one program. We have seen remarkable change in several of our returning kids, building on their skill set each time and making great strides in things such as anger management, teamwork, communication skills, problem solving. All of this from the combination of a objective based curriculum, skilled facilitators and amazing horses. It really is such a privilege to have the opportunity to learn from such amazing creatures. The Beaver Valley Citizen of the Year Committee is accepting nominations of who should be the 2015 recipient. SPOUSAL SUPPORT AND INCOME INEQUALITY - A TREND ARRESTED? Richard, 56, and Alice, 49, (names changed) were married for 20 years. They had no children. Neither made sacrifices during the marriage, and both were self-sufficient and able to make a clean break when they separated. But Alice was earning significantly more than Richard. Should he get spousal support under the federal Divorce Act just because of their “income disparity”? BC’s appeal court decided this case recently. Richard argued that if roles were reversed and a husband made a lot more than his wife after they broke up, she’d almost routinely get some spousal support. Here, Alice had made a career for herself, getting bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a teaching certificate without Richard’s help. She became a high school principal, worked full-time, and earned roughly $120,000 when the marriage broke up. Richard was working for CN full-time when they met. He continued with CN after they got married, earning up to $48,000 a year. Then he was injured in a car accident in 2001, so he later began work as a part-time personal trainer. He said he earned less than $10,000 per year when he left Alice in 2011, but wasn’t able to prove what his earnings really were. He was paid mostly in cash and didn’t keep a record of his earnings or file tax returns. Alice found out after the separation that he also had earnings from questionable activities, selling steroids and growth hormones, but Richard told the court he no longer did that. Economists told the court full-time personal trainers without university degrees averaged between $51,000 and $68,000 a year. The court concluded Richard had chosen to work

only part-time and not to become certified or explore other better-paying occupations – so he was under-employed by choice. The court said his annual income should be treated as though it was between $50,000 and $60,000. The appeal court noted earlier cases where some transitional spousal support was paid to the “disadvantaged” spouse after a long marriage, when there was substantial income inequality post-breakup. But it emphasized that marriage alone, even if long, doesn’t automatically entitle a spouse with lower income to spousal support. If you’re both self-sufficient and a clean start is possible after separation, the lower-income spouse can’t automatically lay claim to the fruits of their ex’s future labour. They must prove why they should get support – whether due to foregone opportunities, need, lack of means or other relevant factors. Here, Richard couldn’t. Another factor in this case was that, after separating from Alice, Richard started living with another woman who made a base salary of $75,000 to $90,000 plus overtime (close to what Alice earned), and they lived in a condo similar to the one Alice bought postseparation. So the appeal court agreed Richard wasn’t entitled to spousal support. (But it allowed him to keep the $17,500 Alice had paid him earlier in interim support – equivalent to transitional support payments.) Before, courts were inclined to automatically award support when there was a big difference in income between the spouses after they split. By stressing that a spouse seeking spousal support must first prove they’re entitled to support, this decision may have put the brakes on this trend.

Iconic Canadian Photo Goes Viral

A recent photo has captured the imagination of Canadians across our nation, has tickled the fancy of our neighbours to the south and has stamped the beauty of our country and its people in the minds of those even further away. The little story is that the Kaslo AfterBurners happened to have a heavy-shotted right winger, who also happened to be the helicopter pilot contracted to shuttle the crew and props to a rink on a lake in the Purcell Mountain Range. This rink had been the scene of some recent commercials. After the shoot was done, the ice went up for rent, so pilot Erik Mathews rounded up his 10 men to play. The big story is that Burner’s power forward Shaun Begg is also a Corporal in the local detachment. He thought it would be nice to get some photos of himself in his serge on a mountain top. Something for his office – or maybe for a Christmas card. The team said they didn’t mind. His boss said yes, so he packed the scarlet tunic, the “stipped Sam Browne” of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and brought it rinkside. The Burners in red played a super talented East Kootenay team in white. Both groups spent their 5 hours feeling like the luckiest kids in Canada. Everyone had a camera and the photo ops were unlimited. On their way down some photos were sent ahead to friends in Kaslo. One of those friends happened to work at Pennywise, and was eagerly awaiting photos. The next morning the above photo arrived from photographer Rick Wiltse. “Check this out” he said, and we knew this was the one. So after cleaning it up, it was loaded on Facebook and pushed out into the world with #s and @s and shares and likes and comments and replies. It is

so beautiful. So iconic – it had to be shared as far as it could be sent. At the same time Shaun had twittered a copy to his boss in Nelson, who retweeted it to the @bcRCMP twitter feed....well the bird never looked back. By the time these happy and weary players were home in Kaslo the photo had gone viral. There were 23,000 views on CTV and 500+ twitters and numerous retweets. By our press time CTV stats show 47,000 Facebook views, and 2000 + tweets and many more retweets. CTV asked “Is this the most Canadian picture ever?” and the buzz phrase caught on with citizens across the nation responding. Shaun keeps shaking his head in disbelief. “What was a most memorable day off has turned into so much more. I just wanted a picture for myself. I have now been interviewed by CTV, CBC Vancouver, Global, Vancouver Sun and ABC New York. Although I guess I got my Christmas card,” he chuckles, “and it is a keeper!” You are probably wondering if Corporal Begg scored on this shot. Goalie Mike Guttensohn, the man in black, would have you know, “Hummm, well he might have. The guy just never gives up!!” You also probably want to know who won the game. When asked, the players responded “We all won” and so they did. There have been numerous requests to purchase a copy of this photo. Halo, a 4 year old spayed Persian short haired tortoiseshell, first came to the Trail Regional BCSPCA on January 21, 2015 from a property that had too many cats. She is an affectionate, playful and friendly girl who tends to be shy at first. Once she feels safe, she relaxes into soft touches! She did live with many other cats in her life, so could go to a home with another respectful cat or would be just as happy to be the only feline in your life.
