Paintings, Pots And Performance

The Slocan Lake Gallery Society presents a group art exhibition Inspired by Nature: The Slocan Valley at the Hidden Garden Gallery in New Denver from September 10 to 21. Opening night is Friday, September 12 from 7 to 9:30 pm, and will be a literary and musical evening with poetry and prose readings, music and a powerful dance and drum performance. Refreshments will be served. With over 25 of our finest local artists and crafts people collaborating to make this an energy-filled, exciting exhibition, Slocan Valley (and a couple of Kaslo) visual artists will be showing new works in several mediums: paintings in oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media; sculpture in clay, carved rock, mosaic, mixed media. Also jewellery, cedar weaving, fibre arts including some incredible weaving and fabric submissions, masks, illustration, and photography. Most works will be for sale, including larger, more expensive works and some very affordable such as art cards and smaller paintings. Our natural environment is sacred to many artists, who are inspired by its wonders. The art and performances reflect this reverence. Anna Grace McLean Passed away August 29, 2014 Born on July 14, 1936. As a child, Anna lived in the Pend D’Oreille Valley; she moved to Fruitvale in her teens. She passed away peacefully with her family by her side after suffering a stroke and a battle with cancer. Anna was a very strong and hardworking woman who cared for her family very much. She was always loading up the grandkids into the motorhome and taking the kids to Fort Steele or Rock Creek Fair or somewhere else. Anna enjoyed curling, horseback riding, slo-pitch and mostly her children and grandchildren. She looked after the family business, NDB Trucking, until her health declined. Anna is survived by her husband Neil; sons Ron of Fruitvale, Len (Donna) of Fruitvale; daughter Shelly (Sid) of Salmo; sisters Irene (Don) Hill of Robson, Kathy (Jack) Seville of Robson; brothers Gary (Diane) Buckley of Camrose AB, Hugh (Shirley) Buckley of Pend D’Oreille Valley; Fred (Janice) Buckley of Pend D’Oreille Valley; 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. There will be no service at her request. A family gathering will be set at a later date. She will be missed by all who knew her. In lieu of ﬂowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The Lower Columbia Region is thriving! The most recent economic statistic in a series of published metrics highlighting our thriving economy is the number of jobs posted in the Lower Columbia Region. From January through August 2014 there have been 1,040 different employment opportunities posted at the Community Skills Centre! Wanted ads ranged from Licensed Practical Nurses to Power Engineers. This metric really highlights the fact that our amazing region is a great place to live, work, and play. Terry Van Horn, Economic Development Coordinator for the Lower Columbia Initiatives commented, “This will be the third metric of our series released; we encourage people to continue posting and sharing these metrics with their networks as it really makes a difference to the initiative and the communities. Lower Columbia (Trail, Rossland, Warfield, Montrose, Fruitvale, Area A and B) residents will be asked to participate in a regional survey to provide input regarding the priorities and specific actions to help guide the Lower Columbia Community Development Team Society (LCCDTS) in allocating $600,000 in funding, over the next three years under the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) Community Directed Funds (CDF) Program. The LCCDTS has launched the development of the Lower Columbia Priorities Plan, which will establish the key strategic priorities that will provide the committee with direction on how to distribute these funds which must fulfill the CBT’s mandate and the CDF vision. The mandate of the CBT is to support efforts by the people of the Basin to create a legacy of social, economic and environmental well-being and to achieve greater self-sufficiency for present and future generations; and the vision of the CDF committee is a stronger Lower Columbia Community through investment in creative initiatives. The Whistler Centre for Sustainability has been hired to guide the planning and public engagement process. “As a Committee, we want to get the funds out working for the community, focused on what residents say is important and where they will have the greatest impact,” said Bruce LeRose, CDF Committee Chair. “To achieve this, we are dedicated to delivering a public consultation process that is efficient, open and transparent. The process will bring our communities together to provide input to the committee on where the funds should be allocated.” A public survey is the first opportunity for the public to provide input, with a number of community events and focus groups to come in October. The short 10-minute survey asks residents a number of questions about the Lower Columbia, including their priorities for spending a half million dollars. The input will be used to inform the development of the strategic priorities to guide the allocation of the $600,000. The survey closes September 21. Lower Columbia residents who take the survey can enter for a chance to win one of two $75 gift certificates to Ferraro Foods. There are a couple of ways to access the survey: 1. CVWMA Interpretive Centre You’re invited to a free open house and discussion about the future of the Interpretive Centre at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area on Monday, September 15. Join the discussion at the Creston & District Community Complex, 312-19 Avenue North. There are five potential options being considered for the centre, ranging from rebuilding to re-imagining it entirely. The open house is part of a six month long community engagement process that included personal interviews with key individuals, focus groups and phone surveys. The community research phase will conclude at the end of September. Language Opens New Worlds

It’s one of the most important foundations of a shrinking world. Teaching English as an additional language is vital to commerce, community and creating conversations between cultures. This October, BC Teachers of an Additional Language (BC TEAL) will hold its 2014 Interior Regional Conference at the Selkirk College, Nelson, Tenth Street Campus. More than 100 teachers, administrators and community leaders will take in the one-day event at Mary Hall. “People are always going to want to learn English, that’s the bottom line,” says Tyler Ballam, the Selkirk College instructor who is heading up the organization of the conference. “How that’s delivered is where there is the dialogue.” The theme for the conference is Interior Designs: Building Teaching and Learning Communities. The idea of building connections throughout communities is central to the conference concept, considering most in attendance work in areas far removed from the Lower Mainland. Though immigration is more pronounced in the larger urban centres, Ballam says his colleagues face similar challenges and put forward similar goals. “You are not just a teacher,” he says. “For many of these students you are their first point of contact when they come to Canada. You are representing Canada and the place you live because they are dealing with culture shock. That adds to the stress because you are not just teaching a language, you are important to their lives, their success and their happiness.” Dr. Scott Douglas, a University of British Columbia instructor and author, will be the plenary speaker at the BC TEAL conference in Nelson. There will also be a number of other presentations and group discussions involved during the day-long event. Ballam says it’s important to bring together a group of people who are working towards the same goal of helping improve communication across borders and cultures. “Teachers talk about different perspectives on how to teach different cultures,” he says. “It’s not just ESL, it’s really just working with international students in variety of contexts.” The conference takes place on October 4 at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus. This project involved many community volunteers, Marc and Cari Lamoureux, Andy Pritchard, Sandra and Ray Rempel, Eliscia and Caileigh Somers, Janice Neil, Deb Ogilvie, Jenny Schroeder, Jordan Hill, Dennis Sahs and Rob Leiper, three youth participants and two mentors to design and paint a mural, install laminate floors, and purchase a brand new sectional for the youth room. Many months and volunteer hours later we are delighted

to announce the youth room makeover is done! It’s time to celebrate all our hard work and the youth living at the north end of Kootenay Lake; and to welcome Yvonne Boyd, the new Youth Programmer at the North End of Kootenay Lake. North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society (NKLCSS) recently hired Yvonne Boyd to develop and deliver youth activities, programs and events throughout the fall at the north end of Kootenay Lake. We have lots to look forward to this fall. Keep your eyes peeled for posters with the details of our upcoming grand opening of the youth room on Saturday September 13. This will be a day of games, bowling, and yummy food for everyone and it’s totally free! This would be a great time to let Yvonne know what you want to see happening for fall activities and programs at the north end of Kootenay Lake.
