Van Django plays Miners Hall Van Django is an acoustic string ensemble made up of four of Canada’s most talented and eclectic musicians; violinist Cameron Wilson, guitarist Budge Schachte, guitarist/cellist Finn Manniche and bassist Brent Gubbels. Van Django’s music is well-rooted in the gypsy jazz of 1930’s Paris France, but beyond that it’s all pure blueskying; flights of dazzling fancy, driving rhythms and boundless creativity featuring original compositions and arrangements including humorous mash-ups that showcase their eclectic influences in full regalia. Don’t miss this show! Saturday, February 9 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $25 online at www.rosslandartscouncil.com/ upcoming-events or at Out of the Cellar, 2067 Columbia Avenue in Rossland. Local schools celebrate Love of the Arts! The arts are powerful and transformative components of every student’s learning. For the next few weeks, the Kootenay Lake School District is bringing the arts into focus by focusing on the arts! In coming together to support and celebrate arts programming around the school district, student art events and programming will be the focus across multiple disciplines including music, dance, film, theatre and visual arts in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of arts education. “We will connect our students to meaningful, engaging arts experiences in their classrooms, schools and in communities across the district. Says Superintendent Dr. Christine Perkins. The celebration kicked off Saturday, January 26 with an Indigenous Cultural Celebration at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson. Prenatal education in the Interior Pregnancy is an exciting, but busy time. Between the reading list of pregnancy books and the seemingly endless parenting blogs, sifting through information to find what’s right for you can be challenging and time consuming. Interior Health wants to make getting information during your pregnancy a little bit easier with the launch of SmartMom. SmartMom is a free interactive prenatal education program delivered right to your phone via text messages. The program is tailored, providing information timed to your stage of pregnancy to ensure you get the right information at the right time. “Only 32% of women in Canada attend prenatal education classes and we know that number decreases further for those in rural and remote communities,” said Nancy Delgado, Interior Health’s SmartMom project manager. “By offering SmartMom, we’re now able to offer consistent, evidence-based prenatal education to moms-to-be across the Interior Health region.” How does it work? Moms-to-be receive text messages up to three times per week, with the option to choose the time and days that work best. Messages will guide you through your pregnancy and include topics to discuss with your caregiver, information and resources on how to have a healthy pregnancy, how your baby is developing and tips on how to manage labour and delivery. Information can also be customized to include resources about personal health concerns such as smoking cessation, reducing alcohol intake and healthy eating and weight management. SmartMom was developed in partnership with UBC-affiliated researchers (Optimal Birth BC), the BC Ministry of Health, Northern Health, First Nations Health Authority and in consultation with pregnant women, new mothers, clinicians and public health practitioners. All information is current and has been developed from published peer-reviewed research and is endorsed by The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC). Text messages are intended for women having uncomplicated pregnancies. SmartMom is intended to complement prenatal advice and information provided by caregivers, not to replace it. How do I enrol? You can enrol with SmartMom online or via text message. Text Message: Text “Interior” to 12323. Reply “Yes” to enrol. View the Terms of Consent or call the toll free number. Reply “Accept”. Enter gestational age. SmartMom Canada Website: Visit www.smartmomcanada.ca Click “Enrol Now” in the top right of the homepage. Create your profile. Submitted by Interior Health

Reptiles, grizzlies and more to benefit There are many ways to support a healthy and diverse environment, from restoring habitat to educating schoolchildren about ecosystems. Columbia Basin organizations will be taking on 29 projects like these with support from over $1 million in Environment Grants from Columbia Basin Trust. “Our Environment Grants provide the flexibility to support a wide range of projects focused on ecosystem health, climate change, water stewardship and environmental education,” said Tim Hicks, Columbia Basin Trust Senior Manager, Delivery of Benefits. “We’re honoured to be supporting these varied activities that are helping to strengthen environmental well-being in the Basin and recognize they couldn’t be accomplished without the hard work that groups and organizations put into developing and realizing them.” At Box Lake, near Nakusp, the Okanagan Nation Alliance will add basking sites for blue-listed painted western turtles, which need to bask in the sun to regulate their body temperatures and properly digest their food. Floating basking logs will be anchored in the water, away from motor boats, predators, humans and other disturbances. “Western painted turtle is an important part of Syilx culture,” said Lisa Wilson, Natural Resources Manager. “Syilx people have a sacred responsibility to care for the land and all living things. The number of western painted turtle is low in Syilx territory and it is hoped this project will be a step toward helping it maintain its place on the land.” Another recipient is the Silver City Trap Club near Trail. Its location is home to reptiles like rubber boas. The club is going create reptile habitat by replanting the area, adding large rocks and woody debris and constructing rocky shelters, known as hibernaculum, where the reptiles can take refuge over the winter. “Our hope is to rebuild and enhance the habitat while also making an opportunity for long-term data collection and an opportunity for public interaction with reptiles,” said project coordinator William Chapman. “Due to the nature of the club, activity on the property will always be limited, so the club serves as a low-impact sanctuary in an otherwise busy corridor of human activity.”

The Rocky Mountain Trench Society in the East Kootenay will be implementing three projects to enhance and maintain habitat for animals like Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, elk, deer, the blue listed Lewis woodpecker and American badger. These will take place in the southeast Basin on Hatchery Ridge, North Waldo and Sheep Mountain. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. “Grassland and open forest are major contributors to our region’s exceptional biodiversity,” said Marc Trudeau, Society Coordinator. “At Hatchery Ridge, sheep movement has become difficult due to thick timber that has not been able to thin itself naturally through wildfire. Slashing winter travel corridors will improve line of sight for predator avoidance and increase habitat connectivity, leading to safer travel over a larger area of winter range.” To help both grizzly bear populations and local food producers, Sanders Environmental Services will educate farmers and residents on grizzly bear safety and how to reduce conflicts. It will cost share the installation of electric fencing to protect livestock and crops from bears and provide workshops on effective electric fencing designs and what to do if you encounter a grizzly bear. Project coordinator Gillian Sanders said, “There is a real, tangible social cost to living with bears and the idea behind this project is to create a win-win by sharing this cost with farmers. The project will help people prevent bear conflicts, which can be stressful and expensive, while keeping the bears out of trouble.” See the complete list of approved projects at www.ourtrust.org/reptiles-grizzlies-and-more-tobenefit-from-1-million/ Submitted by Columbia Basin Trust This, and other editorial articles may be viewed, printed or downloaded from the Editorial page at the Pennywise website: www.pennywiseads.com

Free For Free Anika Wallace (sixth from left) gathers with the students at the Ecole D’Arts et de Musique de Nyundo in Rwanda.

World of opportunity! A pair of Selkirk College alumni have returned from Rwanda and Jamaica with a transformational understanding of the world around them and their future in it. Anika Wallace and Brodie Parachoniak graduated from the Contemporary Music & Technology Program in 2018 and 2017 and recently returned from six-month Global Affairs Canada international internships that provide opportunities for post-secondary graduates between the ages of 19 and 30. “This internship was one of the best steps I’ve made for myself towards a more serene and uplifting future, says Wallace, who spent six months as a music/English instructor with Ecole D’Arts et de Musique de Nyundo in Rwanda. “I am content with what it has given me and I feel humbled to have had this opportunity to grow and explore myself and a new country. Selkirk College, along with partners Bow Valley College and College of the Rockies, offers eight placements funded by Global Affairs Canada through the International Youth Internship Program for a total of 28 placements for graduates of diplomas or degrees. The eight Selkirk Collegesponsored internships are based in Rwanda, Guatemala, Jamaica and Kenya with range of projects and skill sets required. The college is currently accepting applications for the 2019 internships with a deadline of January 31. Parachoniak took the opportunity to get involved in international development in order to step outside his comfort zone and experience a new culture. He headed to Jamaica, where he filled the role of social media officer at the Women’s Resource & Outreach Centre in Kingston between June and December. Now living back in his native Manitoba, Parachoniak says working for six months in a new culture changed the way he looks at the world.

Phyllis Scarbo

October 24 1918 – January 19 2019 For those who had the fortune of knowing her, please learn now that Phyllis Scarbo passed away on January 19, 2019 in Kaslo. Her caregiver and great friend Michelle Hansen, and the compassionate care team of the Victorian Community Health Centre, were in close attendance. Many thanks also to Lisa Ross for her care in our mother’s final days. Phyllis was born in Arbroath Scotland, and immigrated to Sterling Ontario in 1928. She married Edward Derek Beacham in 1941 and they had three children: James, Alan and Evanne. The family moved to Calgary AB in 1956. Phyllis married her second husband, Adelard Joseph Scarbo, in 1969 and they made their home in Kaslo BC in 1974. They quickly became involved in community affairs and Phyllis was a member of the RCL Ladies Auxiliary, the Kaslo Seniors, and for several years she was one of the Singing Grannies. She loved nature from an early age and was a talented artist. She could often be seen walking in Kaslo accompanied by one of her shelties. She was predeceased by her husband Joe, son James and grandson John. She is survived by son Alan Beacham (Jane), daughter Evanne Rowland, grandchildren Adam (Loretta), Bryden, Jason, Marcia (Aaron), Richard, William(Noreen) and six great grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered by Joe’s daughters in Ontario: Betty, Donna, Joanne, Judy, and Lucy and their children and grandchildren. As Phyllis wished, no formal service will be held. A private memorial will take place at a later date. PAGE 22

Better equipped for connecting to the world It’s a milestone being felt around the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions: after more than three years of hard work, residents in over 12,000 rural households, in more than 62 communities in the region, will have access to new or improved high-speed Internet. “Rural Columbia Basin and Boundary residents love their communities for many reasons, including their remoteness, but being able to rely on the Internet to connect with the larger world – and within our own region – has become essential,” said Johnny Strilaeff, Columbia Basin Trust President and Chief Executive Officer. “The

new high-speed service means residents in these areas can now access resources and enjoy opportunities that increase their quality of life.” Columbia Basin Trust partnered with 14 Internet service providers to secure funding from the federal Connecting Canadians program, the provincial Connecting British Columbia Program and regional districts, in addition to Trust funding. From planning to implementation, the Trust collaborated with a Regional Broadband Committee comprised of the regional districts of East Kootenay, Central Kootenay, Kootenay Boundary and Columbia Shuswap and the Village of Valemount and the Ktunaxa Nation Council. “Improving access to high-speed Internet in our rural communities was a key priority for the Regional Broadband Committee,” said Rob Gay, Regional Broadband Committee Chair and Regional District of East Kootenay Electoral Area C Director. “We’re excited to see the completion of this project and all the benefits that it brings to rural area citizens.” The project’s $8 million budget allowed for improvements in two ways. First, the ISPs were able to expand or improve their infrastructure, most of which is wireless. Second, the Trust was able to expand or improve its existing fibre optic broadband network so that ISPs could better connect to it. The new equipment now enables a download speed of at least five megabits per second to rural households with higher speeds available in most communities. “It’s vitally important for smaller communities throughout BC to have reliable, high-speed access in order to grow local economies, create jobs, access education, health care, emergency services and connect with friends and family,” said Jinny Sims, Minister of Citizens’ Services. “These significant accomplishments are the result of collaboration between many parties and serves as a model for other regions wanting to expand connectivity in BC. Congratulations to everyone involved on this important achievement.” Gray Creek resident Michella Moss is a customer of the East Shore Internet Society, one of the ISPs involved in the project. As a professional voice actor, she works on projects ranging from movie trailers to video games – and can now send and receive files more quickly with the improved Internet speeds. “I rely on my website to attract clients, to receive auditions from my agent and to send mp3 and WAV files to clients both regionally and internationally,” she said. “I feel very blessed to be able to live where I do. I’ve made a quiet studio space without the expense required in a noisy city environment and am able to make a living doing what I love without giving up my need to live remotely.” The Trust is committed to continue extending its network and supporting ISPs and communities as they strive to improve Internet service.
