The sound of whirring tablesaws and smell of fresh cut wood has taken centre stage at Selkirk College’s Silver King Campus with the opening of its new carpentry shop. As part of the ongoing $23 million renewal of the Nelson-based campus, the 4,500 square foot stand alone shop space replaces the old 3,100 square foot location where learners previously honed their skills. The new shop was designed to bring the program into the future with high ceilings, an abundance of natural light, a sizable outdoor workspace and a leading edge dust collection system. The majority of the equipment in the old shop was already industry standard and simply moved over to the new location, but there have also been a few additions to the tools used for learning. The opening of the new carpentry shop in September follows the complete overhaul of shop spaces that house the Millwright/Machinist Program, Electrical Program, Heavy Mechanical Program, Plant Operator Program, Welding Program and Metal Fabricator Program which were all opened last year. The final piece of the Silver King Campus refresh is the new Student Commons Building which will be opened to students before the end of the year. The $23 million Silver King Campus project is funded by the federal and provincial governments with additional dollars from Columbia Basin Trust and industry partners. Find out more about formalized educational opportunities in trades at selkirk.ca/trades. Submitted by Bob Hall

Health benefits of staying hydrated The Affectionate Son: The Great War in Words, 1916-1918 In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the Trail Museum & Archives is honoured to present an exhibit recounting the experience of Trail solider, Jimmy Schofield. The exhibit, entitled The Affectionate Son: The Great War in Words, 1916-1918, opened officially in early November in the Trail Museum & Archives’ Columbia Gallery. The Trail Historical Society was gifted a fascinating collection of over 150 letters from Private James P. Schofield to his mother, father, sister, and brother from June 1916 – November 1918. James Peverley Schofield was the son of former Trail mayor and long-time Conservative MLA James H. Schofield. He joined the war effort in June 1916 and spent several months at Camp Hughes in Manitoba undergoing training. After a tortuous journey to England in November 1916, Jimmy eventually found himself in the French trenches by February 1917. Wounded three times, his career in the military spanned from message relay to the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. “This collection is remarkably well-preserved and was obviously cherished by the Schofield family,” states Sarah Benson-Lord, Museum & Archives Manager. “The tone of these letters change over time; initially the musings of a young man seeking excitement to tales of trench life, combat and disillusionment. He was always conscious of the intended reader, as his letters to his mother were tempered compared to those he sent his father.” Jimmy closed each letter with, “your affectionate son.” The exhibit uses Jimmy’s words exclusively to recount his journey, with excerpts from 38 of his letters home. The exhibit also invites visitors to experience life in a trench and provides some insight into the life of MLA Schofield, whose conservative politics were campaigning for conscription at the time. A detailed trench map identifies both British and German trench lines and traces Jimmy’s route through the last few months of the war. The exhibit is open to the public during regular Riverfront Centre hours. Entry to all museum galleries is free of charge. The Trail Museum & Archives was pleased to collaborate with the Trail Historical Society in bringing this exhibit to life. Submitted by Trail Museum & Archives
How much water you need to consume on a daily basis depends on several factors, including your weight, the climate where you live and how often you exercise. The clearest sign that you’re adequately hydrated is transparent yellow or pale urine. If yours is a darker yellow, you probably need to start drinking more. The common rule of thumb that one should drink eight 250-millilitre glasses a day is a good place to start. If you are properly staying hydrated, these six positive health results should follow. Staying Hydrated Gives You More Energy: Water helps keep up a steady flow of nutrients into your cells, which boosts your energy. When you’re dehydrated, this process is hampered – cell membranes become less permeable, affecting your physical and mental performance and making you feel sluggish. Staying Hydrated Gives You Strength: Water helps your muscles maintain the right balance of electrolytes – like sodium, potassium and magnesium – to function properly. Without water, you’re more prone to cramping and research suggests that even low levels of dehydration impair physical performance when exercising. Staying Hydrated Curbs Appetite: A 2016 study from the University of Illinois involving more than 18,000 adults found that when people increased their daily water intake by 250 to 750 millilitres (on top of the litre they drank on average), they consumed as many as 205 fewer calories a day. Your Memory May Improve: Our brains are hugely dependent on fluid – synapses and neurons need liquid to fire properly. According to a 2003 review published in the journal Nutrients, studies have consistently found that memory and attention improve in children after they take a drink of water. The research isn’t as definitive yet for adults, but it can’t hurt to assume it’ll help us, too. Staying Hydrated Helps You Fight A Cold: There’s a reason your doctor tells you to drink more when you’re getting sick. As your body launches its attack against germs, your cells need to be properly hydrated to maintain that effort. Drinking water also helps loosen mucus, which keeps your nose and throat moist. Staying Hydrated Prevents Constipation: “Water interacts with dietary fibre in the digestive tract to bulk stools,” says Dr. Jordan J. Karlitz, professor of clinical medicine at the Tulane Cancer Center in Louisiana. So by staying hydrated, among other proactive measures you can reduce the risk of constipation and keep things moving along. www.readersdigest.ca

2. Protect your personal information. It’s normal for online retailers to request additional details and preferences to make your online shopping experience more personalized. However, if they ask for too much information-like your social insurance number, for instance-that’s a definite red flag. 3. Create unique passwords for each website. Avoid using the same password for every online shopping site you frequent. That way, if your login information gets stolen on one website, your other accounts likely won’t get compromised. 4. Look for the ‘S’. Any time you input personal or credit card information into a website, ensure the page is secured. Look at the website URL, it should start with https:// (rather than http://) and should have a padlock symbol to indicate that the page is secure.” 5. Be wary of dream deals. Regard sale-of-thecentury price tags with a healthy dose of skepticism. When items are priced significantly lower
than they should be, that should raise a flag about the legitimacy and authenticity of the website. 6. Look for customer service information. Safe online shopping sites have their toll-free customer service line or email address readily available. Read over the website’s refunds and exchanges policies: openness about these conditions is often a good indicator of credibility. 7. Don’t click on untrusted pop-up ads. While it’s common practice for retailers to use pop-up ads for e-newsletters, promotions and flyers, keep an eye out for phishing scams. Pesky pop-ups are a way for scammers to lure or confuse online shoppers. Have an ad-blocker installed when shopping on unfamiliar websites to avoid getting phished. 8. Check your credit card statement. Keep a close tab on your credit card statements, even after you’ve received your purchased item. It’s always smart to ensure that there were no hidden charges tacked on. www.readersdigest.ca

Winter is coming: Get a flu shot to protect yourself Winter is coming – and with winter comes influenza season. Protect yourself and your loved ones against influenza, often called the flu, by getting your flu shot and preventing the spread of germs. The flu shot is available through your pharmacist, health-care provider, First Nations community health nurses, or your local health unit. Interior Health (IH) immunization clinics will begin the week of Nov. 1 and will continue in communities throughout the month, with flu clinics by appointment available throughout the rest of the season. To find an influenza clinic or provider near you, watch for local announcements, contact your local public health unit, physician’s office or pharmacy, or visit the Immunize BC Influenza Clinic Locator. The flu shot is safe, easy to get, and free for those at risk and their loved ones. The people at the greatest risk of influenza-related complications are adults and children with underlying health conditions, residents of long-term care homes and other chronic-care facilities, people 65 years of age and older, children under 60 months of age, pregnant women, and Aboriginal peoples. “It’s especially important to get vaccinated if you have loved ones that are at increased risk of complications from influenza,” says Dr. Silvina Mema, IH Medical Health Officer. “When you get the flu shot, you improve your chances of going flu free this season. Furthermore, by getting the shot you are building protection around your loved ones and reducing their chances of getting sick.” The flu shot is free for the following people: · People 65 years and older and their caregivers/household contacts; · People of any age in long-term care facilities; · Children and adults with chronic health conditions and their household contacts; · Children and adolescents (six months to 18 years) with conditions treated for long periods of time with Aspirin (ASA), and their household contacts;
For All Your Currency Exchange Needs
· Aboriginal people; · All children six to 59 months of age; · Household contacts and caregivers of infants and children from birth to 59 months of age; · Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy during the influenza season and their household contacts; · Visitors to hospitals, health centres and long-term care facilities; · People who work with live poultry; · Health-care and other care providers in facilities and community settings who are capable of transmitting influenza disease to those at high risk of influenza complications; · People who provide care or service in potential outbreak settings housing high-risk persons (e.g., crews on ships); and · People who provide essential community services (first responders, corrections workers). Influenza is a serious and contagious respiratory infection that can lead to hospitalization and, in severe cases, death. The infection spreads when a person comes into contact with droplets from an infected person who coughs or sneezes. Symptoms of influenza may include fever, aches, fatigue, headaches, muscle pain, a runny nose, sore throat, and cough. “People often confuse influenza with the common cold, but they are not the same and are caused by different viruses. A cold is usually a milder illness that can make you uncomfortable for a few days,” says Dr. Mema. “In contrast, flu symptoms are more debilitating, and potentially life threatening to those at risk of complications.” You can also reduce your risk of illness by preventing the spread of germs. · Wash your hands frequently throughout the day, especially after coughing or sneezing; · Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue; · Stay home if you are sick; and · If your children are sick, keep them home from daycare and schools. Edward James Sutherland “Ted, Teddy” 70, of Kaslo, British Columbia, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Kootenay Lake Hospital (Nelson, BC). Born in Nelson, British Columbia to Molly and Donald Sutherland on December 26, 1947, Ted lived most of his life in the Kootenays. Ted was a kind and modest man who spent most of his working life in the heavy equipment and logging industry. In his spare time, he enjoyed working in his shop, collecting chainsaws, fixing small equipment and spending time in the Legion with the people he considered family. Ted is survived by his wife Shelley of 19 years, who says Ted was the kindest man she has ever known. He is also survived by his three daughters from his previous marriage to Bente Peck – Leanne Shalla (John), Tammy Leitch (Glen) and Laurie Beveridge (Dave). Ted will also be fondly remembered by his nine grandchildren, JJ, Brent, Lauren, Natalie, Emma, Kyle, Jenna and Tyler and his great-granddaughter Vienna. He will be sadly missed by his sisters Leona Pedosuk, Darlene Wiebe, Donna Stratton and brother David Gavrilik. Ted was predeceased by his parents, sister Joy Fox and brother Doug Sutherland. Ted was a loving father, husband, brother, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend to all. A celebration of life will be held in the spring to allow friends and family to travel. Details will be available at a later date.

the 31st Annual Pumpkin Classic Debate Tournament in Trail on Saturday, October 27th. Many of the Grade 5-8 students competing in the Novice category were first-time debaters and held their own against older more experienced students. Participating schools from Kelowna, Trail, Rossland, Castlegar and Nelson were represented at the lively annual event designed to foster and impart critical thinking and communication skills. Volunteer judges, made up of community members and former teachers, listened to opening arguments, a questioning period and then final rebuttal remarks from pairs of students that had prepared for the crossexamination method followed at this debate event e level. The debate teams at LVR and Wildflower are run as one of the student led clubs that meet weekly. Student mentors from LV Rogers Secondary have been

Judy Mae Huscroft fell asleep at her home on October 25, 2018. As always, she was surrounded by loving family and friends who will miss her dearly. Judy Mae Strand was born on October 30, 1945 to Harry and Annie Strand. With her siblings Sonny, Alice, Pat, Sally and Karen, she grew up in Moyie. In 1959, the family moved to Cranbrook. She graduated from Mt. Baker High School in 1963. Judy married Allen Douglas Huscroft on August 28, 1965. The young couple moved to Golden in 1966, where they welcomed their children Derek Allen in 1969, Darcy Fredrick in 1971, and Cari Jo Ann in 1973. As a family, they moved to Castlegar in 1976. Judy enjoyed countless happy times with family and friends.
working this fall with Wildflower students in preparation for the regional tournament. Wildflower teacher Jeff Yasinchuk explained that the preparation for the debate included students partaking in individual research, speech writing and practice debate sessions with a partner. “Our students all did exceptionally well, including many first-time debaters. We had gold, silver and bronze finishes in the Junior and Senior divisions as well as a silver in the Novice division.” said Naomi Ross, Director of Innovative Learning at Kootenay Lake School District. A second regional tournament is planned for December in Castlegar. In January 2019 LVR will host a third regional tournament. Aggregate individual scores as well as team scores go towards eligibility to compete in provincial and even national debate events held in varied locations. Submitted by School District 8
She met many people through her years of work as a meter reader, but closer to her heart was her work as a teacher of the Bible. She was often found puttering in her beautiful garden, occasionally talking to her plants and was always up for a hike in the woods. Games, food and a listening ear were a constant and her ability to make everyone feel loved and welcome are her legacy. Judy would not want anyone to be overwhelmed with grief. She had strong faith in the Bible based hope of resurrection. Those who are eagerly waiting to welcome her back are her husband of 53 years, Doug; her children Derek (Gigi), Darcy, and Cari Jo (Cory); her grandchildren Jessica (Jesse), Reeve, Harrison, and Carter; her great-granddaughter Jean-Alina; her brother Sonny (Leah) and her sisters Alice, Pat (Ken), Sally (Dale), Karen (John) and her brother-in-law Jim (Gail); her many nieces and nephews and her large extended family. She would want us to think ahead to a time when she will be young, vibrant and laughing. She will be able to work in her garden,
