There will be an information meeting on Tuesday, June 16 at 7 pm at Chances Casino in Castlegar regarding an initiative to restore, maintain, preserve and protect the historic Dewdney Trail. The project coincides with the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Dewdney Trail that originated in Hope and went to the Similkameen and then through the Kootenays to Wild Horse Creek (near today`s Cranbrook) in the summer of 1865. It was the first transportation route established across southern BC. For further information, contact Richie Mann at 250362-9465 or richiemann11@gmail.com or Graham Jones at 250-362-9966 or jumbuck65@yahoo.ca

The Kootenay Savings Community Foundation is excited to announce the distribution of $53,060 in new grants. Since it was established in 2000, the Community Foundation has formed partnerships with hundreds of other local like-minded organizations and groups to leave lasting legacies in the Kootenays, investing close to $4 million dollars into worthwhile non-profit projects and initiatives. These most recent grants, ranging from $400 to $6000, will provide much-needed funding to twenty-four diverse and deserving community groups from throughout the region. Including the following: Arrow Lakes Search & Rescue; Castlegar Archery Club; Castlegar Communities in Bloom; Castlegar Friends of Parks & Trails Society; Columbia Valley Youth Soccer Association; Hills Emergency Services Society; Kaslo Trailblazers Society; Kimberley Independent School Society; Kootenay Doukhobor Historical Society; Kootenay Lake Historical Society; Lower Columbia Community Development Team; Meadowbrook Community Association; Renascence Arts & Sustainability Society; Rotary Club of Nakusp; Salmo Swimming Pool Society; Slocan Lake Gallery Society; Tadanac Residents Association; Trail Career Development Services; Trail & District Arts Council; Trail Gymnastics Society; Trail Track & Field Club; Warfield Village Enhancement Society; Wildsight Invermere; Windermere Elementary School PAC. Along with the community grants, the Foundation is also rewarding youth for their commitment to community, leadership and learning by awarding $38,700 in educational awards and summer camp sponsorships.

Local Girl Wins Big in Chicago

game,” said their coach Tracy Warren. “We came to Chicago with only three defence since one was sick. At the beginning of one game we were down to only one defence, since two were in the box. In the final minutes of the Championship game we scored on our own net, forcing a shootout.” “Everyone was simply amazing,” continues Tracy. “Each player had some special skill that they brought together like a puzzle to contribute to a total team effort. The girls really played well against some teams that have played together all year. They got stronger each game. The coaching staff are really proud of how hard the girls worked and what the group accomplished.” The champions are now off to Winnipeg where they will face off against teams from all over Canada. Congratulations to Faithe Harris and her teammates! Submitted by Carmen Harris

A West Kootenay girl had the honour of representing Canada at the Bantam Triple A North American Prospects Showcase Hockey Tournament in Chicago, May 6 to 10. Faithe Harris from Castlegar was part of a select team chosen from 2001 birth year girls throughout BC and Alberta (only 2 from Alberta, the rest from BC). The team, coached by Tracy Warren, played six games in total to defeat the defending Champions, the American West Coast Selects, who were coached by Manon Rheaume, the only woman ever to play in an NHL game. Faithe Harris’ team won all their games, two of which were very tough competition and four which they nailed and got shutouts. “Yes, there were a few tense moments, such as a goalie getting hurt. We had to put in a cold goalie on the PK with only a few minutes left in the

Nelson Market Readies For The 2015 Season The West Kootenay EcoSociety will open the Downtown Nelson Local Market on Wednesday, June 10 in the 400 block of Baker Street for its sixth year in a row. The market will run each Wednesday from 9:30 am to 3 pm through to September 23, offering an amazing mix of local produce, plants, prepared foods, body care, and hand-made arts and crafts. Customers can rest assured that they are supporting the local economy due to the fact that 80% of each vendor’s wares must be grown or made locally to be sold at this market. EcoSociety’s Markets and Events Director, Jesse R. Woodward, will work with vendors, business owners, and city agencies to ensure the market’s success. “As I go into my fourth year in this position I am thrilled with the response from vendors, the city, and businesses along Baker Street. The Downtown Local Market is completely sold out again this year, which is a good sign of the health and vitality of this market” he said. “Customers will really appreciate the quality and diversity of the offerings at the market, especially in combination with Baker Street’s amazing retail selection.” The West Kootenay EcoSociety operates the Downtown Nelson Local Market as a project to promote local food security and relocalization of our economy, and to create a meeting place for arts, culture and community networking. HIV Then And Now – Interior Health has launched a new campaign to show how advances in HIV treatment and care have improved the lives of those living with the disease. The campaign aims to break down stereotypes that prevent people from being tested and accessing life-saving treatment. The HIV Then & Now campaign builds on the momentum of Interior Health’s innovative My Health is Sexy campaign which was launched in December 2014. The HIV Then and Now campaign tells the stories of people who are living with HIV today. It puts faces to a disease that just 20 years ago, in the absence of effective treatment, often progressed to AIDS and equalled a death sentence. Today, people receiving treatment for HIV can expect to live long, healthy lives free of symptoms. “For us to achieve an AIDS-free generation within our lifetime we need to address the stigma and fear related to HIV,” says Dr. Trevor Corneil, Medical Health Officer with Interior Health. This campaign shows how extraordinary advances in treatment have transformed HIV into a manageable disease that no longer needs to be feared.” The campaign shares the stories of two BC men. Dale from Kamloops who was diagnosed with HIV in 2004, and Michael from Vancouver who was diagnosed in 2007. Interior Health’s HIV Then & Now campaign is part of the innovative Seek and Treat for Optimal Prevention of HIV/AIDS (STOP HIV/AIDS) program, which aims to increase HIV testing rates, reduce HIV transmission and improve the health outcomes of those living with HIV. In British Columbia, it is estimated that approximately 3,500 people are living with HIV and are unaware of their status. The only way to know for sure if someone has HIV and to engage that person in treatment is through a test. Early diagnosis of HIV supports optimal health outcomes for infected individuals and reduces the likelihood of transmission to others. Since Interior Health launched the program in 2012, testing in the region has increased by 32%. The Brotherhood Of The Screaming Abyss Mark your calendar for 7 pm, Friday, June 19. The Slocan Community Library is proud to present Dennis McKenna, author of The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss. This is a free event at the library, located at 710 Harold Street in the Village of Slocan. In The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss, for the first time, Dennis describes growing up in a small Colorado town during the 1950s and turbulent ’60s and explains the ideas and adventures shared with his brother Terence McKenna, famous radical philosopher, futurist and raconteur, sometimes called the intellectual’s Timothy Leary. The two brothers, along with other kindred spirits in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, yearned to explore the mysteries of time, mind and the improbable reality of existence, searching for the Holy Grail in the form of a legendary hallucinogen that would “change everything forever,” which it did though not in ways they’d ever imagined. Dennis McKenna is currently Assistant Professor in the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota. His professional and personal interests are focused on the interdisciplinary study of ethnopharmacology and plant hallucinogens. He has conducted extensive ethnobotanical fieldwork in the Peruvian, Colombian, and Brazilian Amazon. His doctoral research at the University of British Columbia in 1984 focused on the ethnopharmacology of two tryptimine-based hallucinogens used by indigenous peoples in the northwest Amazon. He continues to investigate the therapeutic uses of psychoactive medicines derived from nature and used in indigenous ethnomedical practices. He will be in Nelson giving a Rediscovering Nature weekend workshop at the Mountain Waters Retreat Centre, June 6 and 7. In his presentation at the Slocan Community Library Dennis will no doubt share his insights into the deepest mysteries of life on earth, humanity’s evolutionary odyssey through time and history and the outer dimensions of consciousness. The volunteers at our little gem of an independent library urge you to arrive early to get a seat for this special event. Submitted by Lois Lawrence

Summer Reading Suggestions It’s that time again! Summer reading suggestions from the Kootenay Book Weekend for all the passionate page turners out there. For our twelfth year, the following books have been chosen to inspire, instruct and entertain. Daughters of the Witching Hill by Mary Sharratt. Well researched 17 century historical details of the Pendle witch-hunt are interwoven with a story about strong women, family and betrayal. History comes to life as a family tries to survive the hysteria of this place in time. The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King. Numerous reviews agree that every school should teach this book and every Canadian should read it. With his ironic wit the author will make you laugh, he will make you cry and he will make you angry. But foremost he will make you think with this blended narrative, commentary and myth busting history lesson. Local Customs by Audrey Thomas. This novel merges fiction and history in telling the story of Letitia Landon, an 1830s London poet and writer who marries Captain George Maclean, the Governor of Cape Coast Castle on the Gold Coast of Africa. She leaves the soirees of London for the unknown in Africa and eight weeks later is dead. The mystery of her death is explored. The final selection The Oilman and the Sea is by our guest author, Arno Kopecky. He and his friend, photojournalist Ilja Herb take a journey on a 41 foot sailboat from Sidney to Kitimat, more or less following the path the super tankers of the Northern Gateway project would take. In this very readable account, they explore the geography as well as the social and environmental concerns surrounding the project. Enjoy these reads and come and partake in some lively discussion at the Best Western on Baker Street in Nelson September 18, 19 & 20. Working Together To Prevent Elder Abuse Nelson, Kaslo and Salmo Community Response Networks of BC and the Nelson & Area Elder Abuse Prevention Program announce the 10th annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Monday, June 15. The BC Ministry of Health estimates that between four and 10 per cent of BC seniors will experience some form of physical, emotional, sexual or financial abuse. This estimate is likely low since elder abuse is often not reported. Older adults in our community continue to find themselves in vulnerable situations and may experience various forms of abuse and neglect. Legislation alone can’t keep them safe – involved communities make a critical difference. Since elder abuse can often be invisible, citizens have a role to play by keeping their eyes and ears open to possible abuse. This vigilance is important as often a senior will not report abuse. Abusers are often someone they trust or a family member. The abuser maybe all that stands between the senior and the social isolation they can fear as much as abuse. Financial abuse is the most common form of elder abuse. The ways in which seniors are victimized keep changing. Internet and email-related abuse has become much more widespread in recent years. Mark your calendars! Show the world you care about ending elder abuse and neglect by wearing something PURPLE on Monday, June 15. The activities planned to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day include:

•Kaslo - Saturday, June 13: Join the Community Response Network at the Kaslo Market, beside the Kaslo Hotel on Front Street. Also come to Open House for Safety at the Seniors Centre on Thursday mornings continuing through July and August. • Nelson - Monday, June 15: At the Nelson Walmart mall entrance, enter a draw for instant prizes, get information and have great conversation 10 am to 2 pm. Nelson & District Credit Union, Resource Fair from 10 am to 1 pm. Drop off personal documents for secure shredding. • East Shore - Tuesday, June 16: Join the Age Friendly Community at NDCU East Shore Community Branch for an information table on Elder Abuse Prevention. Drop off personal documents for secure shredding.

Nelson Grans HIV Aids Walk Saturday, June 13 Grans from Nelson and around the West Kootenay will join thousands of Canadian grandmothers, grandothers and grandkids who walk all across the country to raise funds for our sister grandmothers in Africa as they carry the enormous burden of caring for their orphaned grandchildren. JOIN US and help us Turn the Tide on HIV AIDS in Africa by pledging online. 100% of proceeds go to the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign by the Stephen Lewis Foundation. You can find out how to pledge at: http://bit.ly/1KHOwaf Walk begins from Nelson’s Lakeside Park, Rotary Shelter at 11 am, registration starts at 10 am.

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Survey In 2014, a Nelson resident who was unable to make arrangements to bring her parent, who uses a wheelchair, to a family event, discovered that there are no local taxi services that can accommodate a wheelchair nor is it possible to rent an accessible vehicle from a car rental agency in the area. She called Spinal Cord Injury BC for assistance

and was told that they often receive calls from people needing wheelchair accessible transportation in the West Kootenay and Nelson area. The examples given range from a parent wanting to attend her daughter’s graduation to a gentleman planning travel to this area by plane but realizing there would be no ground transportation available to him once he got here. The resident then contacted the Seniors Coordinating Society (SCS), thinking they would have some information as to whether anything was being done to address this transportation barrier for seniors or persons with different abilities and the families and agencies that support them. The result was that the SCS, the Age Friendly Community Initiative approached Kootenay Carshare Cooperative to explore adding a wheelchair accessible van to the Kootenay Carshare fleet. Car sharing allows you to book the vehicle when you need it and only pay for the time you used it and the kilometres you drove. A survey has been created to determine the level of need for the service. We are asking any interested area resident to fill out this brief survey. The survey can be accessed at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/S8YH2VS It can also be found on the Kootenay Seniors website at www.kootenayseniors.ca or by emailing wcvan.nelson@ gmail.com Print versions of the survey can be picked up at Nelson CARES and Seniors Coordinating Society. Fiddle Workshop at Selkirk College The BC Old Time Fiddlers, Kootenay Branch No. 9, are busy planning the 14th annual 2015 Fiddle, Guitar and Piano Workshop. This week-long summer camp will take place from July 13 to 17 at the Selkirk College Castlegar Campus. This very popular camp continues to provide some of Canada’s very best champion fiddlers as instructors, headed by Master Fiddler Gordon Stobbe from Nova Scotia. During the workshop, renowned guitar and piano teachers share their expertise, balanced by down-to-earth teaching styles, effortless patience and easy going humour. “This five-day camp promises to be another year of offerings that will meet a wide range of interest and skill levels,” says Gary Shannon, president of the local Old Time Fiddlers. The workshop is an immersion in fiddle music to learn and improve techniques and styles, and expand your repertoire in a small camp environment. By learning to memorize tunes on-the-fly without music notation, students learn the traditional aural style of sharing and learning fiddle tunes. The piano and guitar workshops focus on playing backup to the fiddles and help participants become more polished and confident musicians.

In addition to instrument classes, the camp offers miniworkshops including step dancing, orchestra, and harmony. This year there will be an offering of a mandolin mini workshop. The evenings are fun filled with a talent show, outdoor jamming, and an outdoor Instructor’s Concert held at Gyro Park in Trail. The public is invited to take in a very entertaining and upbeat evening camp recital and community dance to be held at the Castlegar Recreation Complex on Thursday, July 16. “This is a rare opportunity to hear some of the best fiddling and enjoy a fun old fashioned evening with the whole family,” says Shannon. For registration information and on-campus residence housing information, please visit the BCOTF #9 website at kootenayfiddlers.com or contact Selkirk College 250365-1208. For more information contact Gary Shannon 250365-6694. Submitted by Bob Hall

The Most Interesting Job Of The Summer Every year a normally pastoral 500 acre farm near Salmo transforms into a city of over 10,000 people, becoming the largest city in the West Kootenay. And like any city, it takes a lot of people to make it work – 2,000 to be exact! It’s what we call the Shambhala Crew, and they come from far and wide, with many joining from the local populous in and around Nelson. “We guarantee it will be one of the most fascinating work experiences of your life,” says Nicole Seaboyer of the Shambhala HR team “Basically if you can think of a job, we’ve probably got it.” For a complete job list, FAQs and to apply for a job, go to www.shambhalamusicfestival.com/working/ or come by one of our Job Fairs: 460 Baker Street in Nelson on Friday, June 12 from 12 pm to 4 pm or at the Salmo Canada Day Celebration in the Knights of Pythias Park on July 1 from 12 pm to 4 pm. Sealah Sealah is a 5 year old spayed female seal point ragdoll mix domestic long hair cat that was surrendered to the Trail Regional BCSPCA Dec 17th 2014 after her owner no longer had time to care for her. Sealah is a shy girl who loves attention and cuddles once she trusts the person caring for her. She needs a home where she will have someone around often, as she doesn’t do well by herself. Also, a calm and consistent home as she does startle easily. We recommend a home free of other cats and small children. If given the patience she needs, Sealah will blossom into a very sweet cat. You can contact the Trail BCSPCA for more information on this lovely girl at 250-368-5910 or trail@spca.bc.ca

West Nile Virus Why You Should Take Note Warmer weather is here and it is important to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Not only are bites uncomfortable, but the mosquito that bites you may also give you West Nile virus. Although the chances of contracting West Nile virus are generally low, there are still risks. There are simple and effective measures you can take to reduce these risks. How do you get West Nile virus? West Nile virus is mainly transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can affect all age groups. Risk to Canadians: Relatively few mosquitoes are infected with West Nile virus. Therefore, for most Canadians, the risk of getting infected is usually low. The risk of being infected can fluctuate from year to year. Overall, the risk is greatest during the warm summer months: mosquito season. In Canada, this can start as early as mid-April and last until the first hard frost in late September or October. The majority of human infections occur between July and early September. Human cases of West Nile virus infection have been reported in parts of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. If you’re planning to travel and spend time outdoors in these or any other areas of Canada, remember to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Cases of human infection have also been reported in Yukon Territory, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. However, these have all been related to travel outside these jurisdictions. Symptoms: The majority of people infected with West Nile virus (approximately 70 - 80%) have no symptoms and do not feel sick. For the remainder, most have mild symptoms that usually appear within two to 15 days after infection. Mild symptoms may include: fever, headache, body aches, mild rash, swollen lymph glands. While anyone infected with West Nile virus can be at risk of developing more severe symptoms and health effects, such as meningitis and encephalitis, adults 50 years of age and older, and those with underlying conditions and/or weaker immune systems are at greater risk. Fewer than 1% of people infected with the virus will develop severe symptoms and health effects. Symptoms of severe illness may include: rapid onset of severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, nausea, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, loss of consciousness, lack of coordination, muscle weakness, paralysis. Consult your healthcare provider right away if you experience any of these symptoms. How to protect yourself: Canadians are encouraged to spend time outdoors and to be active. You can protect yourself from mosquito bites and reduce your risk of contracting West Nile virus by following these simple measures: use insect repellent that contains DEET, Icaridin or other approved ingredients (always read and follow the directions on the insect repellent container, especially when using on young children); wear light-coloured clothing, a longsleeved shirt and long pants; make sure screen doors and windows are in good repair to keep mosquitoes outside; empty standing water around your home and property (e.g., flowerpots, gutters, pet water dishes, and birdbaths) on a regular basis, because mosquitoes breed in standing water. For additional information go to Canada.ca: West Nile virus.

Deborah Alexis Cappos August 25, 1950 to May 20, 2015 Leaving many to grieve, Deborah left us suddenly on May 20th to continue her journey.

eborah Cappos, born in Kamloops on August 25th, 1950 to the late Louie and Ruby Cappos, grew up and attended school in Princeton BC. She was exceptionally talented, possessing a keen and analytical mind. Deborah achieved an Arts degree and a B Ed specializing in Women’s Studies, and was a mentor to many. She taught Grade K to 12 throughout her teaching career and was passionate about making a difference in her students’ lives. Deborah was known and admired for her talent and ability to create amazing things. Her extensive talents included designing and creating everything from elaborate wedding gowns to the stylish everyday clothing she wore. She had a lifelong interest in theatre and the arts, participating as both an actor and costume designer. She was also well known for her time working as a director with Mary Kay. Deborah had a selfless devotion to her friends and family, often traveling great distances to be with the ones she loved, preparing delicious food, sharing time and creating memories. Deborah enjoyed camping, found peace in nature and sharing her love for the outdoors. She loved to share stories, read good books, and play her guitar. Deborah was always so proud of everyone in her life, especially her two girls. She is survived and will be missed by her daughter Shelann and husband Paul (grandsons Alexander and Shea Andersen) and daughter Jenny Armitage and fiancée Dustin Quinlan; as well as her sister Linnea; her nephew Luke, his family and numerous friends. A service of celebration of Deborah’s life will be held July 4th, 2pm at Redfish Elementary School. As Deborah was a lifelong teacher and learner, her daughters have requested that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to: The Deborah Cappos Memorial Fund, in support of a bursary yet to be named, at The Valley First Credit Union, Box 190, Princeton BC V0X 1W0.
