Kootenay practitioners of healing arts have an opportunity for a rare and intimate look into classical Oriental medical writings with author and Doctor Sabine Wilms, Saturday, June 27 at the School House in Ymir. Sabine is an author, educator and translator of ancient Chinese texts. She also happens to be a mother and a goat farmer. She has taught all over the world, speaking last month in Germany at the World Congress of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Co-Op Celebrates 40th Birthday

It’s been a busy 40 years for this thriving local social enterprise and the Kootenay Co-op is ready to celebrate with a birthday party at the store on Friday, June 26. From its original incorporation as the small Vallican-Winlaw Food Cooperative in June 1975, the Kootenay Co-op has grown to be Canada’s largest independent consumerowned retail natural foods cooperative. This year the popular garden tour will be on Sunday, July 12 from10 am to 3 pm. Most of the gardens are new to the tour and you will see an interesting mix that is sure to be informative, inspiring and fun. Explore rural properties featuring grains, mobile greenhouses, bees, and a blueberry farm. In the Village, tour the Community Garden and hear live music there at 11 am, and participate in a composting workshop at 1 pm; visit a geothermal

greenhouse, see baby rabbits and a new garden built on hay bales. This annual event is a fundraiser for the local Food Hub. Martin Gelzinis 1923 – 2015

After struggling with health issues, in the early hours of June 10th, Martin Gelzinis passed away peacefully in the presence of caring third floor nurses at Kootenay Lake Hospital. He was born in Lithuania in 1923, moving to Nelson in 1948. Martin quickly came to love this little city, his Kootenay Forest work place, the streets, parks, tennis courts and ski hills. “I’ll just go and say a few hellos,� he’d say, heading out to all the grocery stores and of course the mall. A true people person! Martin’s greatest joy was his family and he treasured every aspect of togetherness. A cherished husband to Beverly, father to David, Janette and Fraser, father in-law to Steve Grant, Kaori Nissato and Ula Mezynska. Many, many quality times and photos will keep him in the memory of his young Penticton grandsons, Eli (13), Jaras (11), Taver (9) and little Viktor Sho Gelzinis (21 months) of Victoria. No service is planned at this time but a memorial gathering will take place later in the year. Thank you to all who played such a special role in Martin’s life. To quote his daughter-in-law “an amazing guy�.

Lefty Lefty came in to the Trail Regional BCSPCA May 30th as a stray and was never claimed. He was tied up outside at Shoppers Drug Mart in Trail and there was no indication of owner. Lefty is a neutered 1 1/2 year old tan and white Aussie lab cross. Lefty is such a special guy, he is very sweet and friendly and loves to be with people. So far he hasn’t done well with other dogs due to lack of socialization, but is improving. If you are looking for a lovable medium sized dog, Lefty is the one for you. In consultation with BC Conservation Officer Service, regional bear biologists and the Ministry of Forest Land and Natural Resource Operations, the Regional District of Central Kootenay is initiating an annual spring trail closure for a portion of the Nelson-Salmo Great Northern Trail. The annual closure will include the trail south of Cottonwood Lake parking area to Hall Siding. Signs will be posted accordingly at the entrance to trail closures. Collared bear data has shown the area from Cottonwood Lake to Hall Siding, particularly the areas of Apex and Camp Busk, are heavily used by grizzly bears in the spring. The bears use this area because of its highly valued forage habitat. In most cases the bears move on to higher elevations by the middle of June. It is felt that an annual closure will help ensure public safety and benefit the local bear population from over exposure. As black bear and grizzly bear activity is common in the spring and early summer, bears may be present on the trail system throughout the year so please remember to always: Use caution, do not attempt to view or approach bears, do not leave garbage or food on trails. LOL At The Civic Theatre!!

On Youtube you can see them in boxes, chasing dogs, dancing, singing, and even sitting around looking grumpy and now for the second straight year, some of the Internet’s biggest celebrities are coming to Nelson. On Wednesday, June 24 Kootenay feline fans are invited out to the Nelson Civic Theatre for a very fun event in support of the Nelson SPCA. The Just For Cats 2015 film festival features all of your favourite cat videos in a hilarious compilation that is fun for the whole family. Last year this event sold out at the Civic Theatre and now it’s back with an entirely new reel, programmed by Will Braden, creator of the Henri Le Chat Noir series. In addition to the film screening, there will be a Kitty Corral adoption event prior to the show. “These adoptable kitties aren’t world famous yet,” says Nelson BC SPCA branch manager Rob Andrew, “but they will be the stars of your family in no time.” Local DJ Jesse Lee AKA Rafferty Funksmith, Artist of the Year at the Kootenay Music Awards, will be spinning records during the adoption event. The Showcats will also have a very special familyfriendly dance performance prior to the film. Just For Cats supports a national initiative to increase the welfare of cats across the country and enhance the human cat bond. It is the only series of national festivals exclusively dedicated to cats and improving their welfare. Nelson as a small town is one of the very few exceptions on a 2015 schedule, that mostly includes Canadian capitals. “Being a cat person isn’t always the most social experience, but this event is a great opportunity to kick back with like-minded animal lovers for a great night and a great cause,” says Andrew. “Dress up in your best cat costume and celebrate your inner feline.” The Kitty Corral adoption event begins at 6:30 pm and the main event starts at 7:30 pm.
