Andrew Collins Trio The Rossland Council for Arts & Culture is excited to present Andrew Collins Trio on Friday, November 16 at 7:30 pm at the Miners’ Hall in Rossland. 7x Canadian Folk Music Award winner and 5x JUNO nominee mando-maestro Andrew Collins is joined by fellow string-meisters Mike Mezzatesta and James McEleney to showcase a popular collision of folk, new acoustic roots, chambergrass and jazz, with a dizzying number and energetic interplay of instruments on stage. This dynamic genre-hopping show is propelled even further by Andrew’s captivating lead vocals and James’ soaring harmonies. Mando maestro Andrew Collins is at the epicentre of Canada’s burgeoning acoustic/roots music scene. He didn’t invent it – but he’s certainly been a contributor, having co-founded seriously noteworthy Canadian bands like the Creaking Tree String Quartet, the Foggy Hogtown Boys and, more recently, his namesake Trio. That’s not to mention the fact that this prolific, robust performer – comfortable on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola and mandocello – composes, produces, arranges, writes and teaches across multiple genres, including a popular collision of folk, jazz, bluegrass, celtic, and classical. With fellow string guru Mike Mezzatesta, whose versatility shines through on guitar, mandolin, fiddle and mandola, and in-the-pocket James McEleney holding it down on the bass, mandocello and vocals, they showcase a dizzying number of styles and instruments on stage. Bending and blending genres, these musical shape shifters land somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla Fleck and Newgrass invader, David Grisman. They recently released a new double album, grafting 11 vocal cuts (tongues) to 11 instrumentals (grooves) to create a seamless finish with their cleverly monikered double album, Tongue & Groove. Each cut is milled to perfection and represents a back-to-basics visitation on what the band does best – spontaneity of the stage and rapid-fire, improvisational exchanges. Tickets are $25 and available in advance online at www.rosslandartscouncil.com or at Out of the Cellar in Rossland. Identity theft and seniors With technology advancements and upgrades, there’s always something newer and more up-to-date to make our lives easier. Unfortunately, things that make our lives easier can also make life easier for criminals – notably, fraudsters and identity thieves. The Canada Safety Council and TELUS are teaming up to shed light on how seniors can keep themselves and their information safe, and out of the hands of criminals. The Competition Bureau of Canada estimates that seniors between the ages of 60-79 were scammed out of $94 million between January 2014 and December 2017. “Criminals tend to look for the path of least resistance and, too often, that passes through our most vulnerable sections of society,” said Jack Smith, president of the Canada Safety Council. “Seniors seem to be easy targets for a lot of scammers, which is why we feel it’s crucial that we do our part to keep the elderly as informed and prepared as possible to avoid being victimized.” When it comes to email scams, fortunately, there are some clues that can indicate if a message is legitimate or an attempted scam. Unlike professional emails, scam emails are often littered with spelling and/or grammatical errors. These messages also frequently come from unknown email addresses, do not address the recipient by name and feature low-quality images. Additionally, malicious messages may encourage recipients to take urgent actions, involving clicking on links or opening attachments, providing private information, or calling a specific phone number. Unless you’re absolutely certain
of a message’s origins, do not download attachments or click on links as they may contain viruses, spyware and malware. Refrain from using any method of contact shared in the message. Messages that appear malicious in nature should be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and deleted. Here are five other useful tips to keep your information out of the wrong hands: • Limit what you share online; do not give out your social insurance number online under any circumstances. • Don’t share personal information online, including credit card numbers and your address, unless you are on a secure website. To check, look for a padlock icon next to the site’s address. • Many scam calls are of the “cold call” variety. If you’re unsure, let the call go to voicemail. • If you are asked for information over the phone, ensure that you are the one who initiated the call and you know who you’re talking to. Be wary of incoming calls as you may be speaking with someone who is not affiliated with the organization they claim to be from. • Keep your digital household clean – ensure your software is kept up to date and deactivate/delete accounts or apps that are no longer in use. Visit the Canada Safety Council’s website for more safety information and TELUS Wise at https://wise.telus. com, a free digital safety education program.

Youth to benefit from continued support
Support for youth around the Columbia Basin will continue as Columbia Basin Trust renews the Basin Youth Network for three years with a budget of nearly $5 million. Established in fall 2015, the network serves youth in several ways. On the community level, the Trust provides funding to 28 community youth networks. These work to increase local activities and opportunities for youth aged 12 to 18, enabling them to learn new skills and engage more with each other and their communities. On the regional level, the Basin Youth Network brings together young people through regional or Basin-wide events like the Leadership Summit, hosted every two years. It also develops programs that address youth priorities such as leadership development and job readiness, and supports local youth coordinators and those who work with youth with resources like a mental health first aid course. Learn more at ourtrust.org/byn. All priorities—for the regional network and the
community ones—are identified with input from youth. In the first year alone of the regional network, over 6,000 youth provided their voices to identify priorities; this totalled 60 per cent of youth aged 12 to 18 in the Basin. In addition to the Basin Youth Network, the Trust helps youth build knowledge about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and more through JA British Columbia; offers awards and bursaries to high school and post-secondary students; and helps youth get employed through its wagesubsidy programs. Learn more at ourtrust.org/youth. Columbia Basin Trust supports the ideas and efforts of the people in the Columbia Basin. To learn more about the Trust’s programs and initiatives, and how it helps deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the Basin, visit ourtrust.org or call 1-800-505-8998. Janeen Mather, Community Futures Central Kootenay Small Business Training Centre Coordinator with the CFBC r 2018 Award for Excellence and Innovation
Community Futures Small Business Training Centre wins award Community Futures Central Kootenay (CFCK) is pleased to announce that the Small Business Training Centre won the Community Futures British Columbia (CFBC) Award for Excellence and Innovation at the 2018 CFBC Conference. The Small Business Training Centre, a service unique to CFCK, was recognized as a program that could benefit other Community Futures offices across the province. In 1993, CFCK staff identified that the self-employment clients and the broader business community
could use extra support with certain areas of business management. From this, the Small Business Training Centre emerged. Since then, over 4,000 people have accessed training on topics ranging from marketing, bookkeeping, human resources, and technology. In the the past year, over 970 people attended workshops, delivered by 15 instructors, in Nelson, Creston, and Nakusp. “Some of the workshops, such as Bookkeeping Basics, we’ve run for decades.” said Janeen Mather, Small Business Training Centre coordinator, “Frequently, we’ll introduce new workshops to address changes in how business is done in our community. For example, we offer several workshops on social media for business. We’ve partnered with ANKORS to offer Trans 101: Be An Ally to the Trans Community. And we’re always looking for workshops on technology that will benefit businesses.” “Small, local business is part of what makes Central Kootenay so unique.” said Andrea Wilkey, Executive Director of CFCK. “Training that supports businesses to adapt and thrive in a changing economy and social landscape is critical to their ongoing success.” The CFCK Small Business Training Centre has a busy autumn schedule coming up. Visit futures.bc.ca/ workshop-schedule to stay up-to-date on business training opportunities. Submitted by Community Futures

As a community radio station, we’re equally excited to expand our format with regular contributors from the many and varied organizations around the area. Physical activity is part of a healthy pregnancy Physical activity is a critical component of achieving a healthy pregnancy according to a new joint Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) and Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) evidence-based pregnancy & physical activity guideline. Following the guideline can reduce the risk of pregnancyrelated illness such as depression by at least 25%, and the risk of developing gestational diabetes, high blood pressure and preeclampsia by 40%. To achieve clinically meaningful health benefits, the guideline encourages pregnant women without any medical restriction to accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week over a minimum of three days. For greater benefits being active every day and incorporating a variety of activities is encouraged. Activities can include walking, swimming, stationary cycling, and resistance training. View the guidelines at www.csep.ca/guidelines. “The guideline is a collation of the most thorough review of the literature around exercise in pregnancy ever published. Canadian women and their obstetric care providers now have reliable evidence that is exercise safe in pregnancy and improves pregnancy outcomes. Women in Canada, without contraindication, should be strongly encouraged to participate in exercise on a regular basis throughout pregnancy,” says Gregory Davies, SOGC, clinician and Guidelines Consensus Panel. Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology
