Tee Time If you are a golfer, then you already know that spending the morning or a whole day on the course is never time wasted. Veteran golfers can wax poetic about the Zen and athleticism of golf, but even if you’re an awkward beginner, the courses on the following pages will be an inspiration. West Kootenay golf courses are a must to go and do. The flow of the courses over hillocky terrain, and the elevation changes that few places in the world can imitate, will make your golfing day here unforgettable. Spectacular vistas will draw your attention away from your swing; you will find yourself just wanting to stop and breathe for a while. Champion Lakes Golf & Country Club has rolling hills, a winding creek and three ponds – as well as a challenging fairway. Castlegar Golf Club is a 4-star course and has an RV park. Stay and play! Kaslo Golf Club, the Slocan Lake and Nakusp Centennial clubs only have the nine holes but the views of the mountains and lakes below are grand. Have lunch on the verandah at the clubhouse and bask in the view while you eat. Riondel Golf Club is a little gem, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. It is said to be the friendliest club in the Kootenays. Recently, two Kootenay golf courses have re-imagined themselves. The Balfour Golf Course and Kokanee Springs, both top-tier professional courses, not only boast excellent accommodations, but now also offer adventure or spa packages. You can rent mountain bikes, go hiking in the surrounding mountains or go kayaking on Kootenay Lake. Golf today, book an adventure for tomorrow! For those about to duff, we salute you! NAKUSP
Nakusp If you take a stroll along the paved path hugging the shoreline of upper Arrow Lake, you will understand why the those in Nakusp love where they live. This little village is embraced by both the Monashee and Selkirk Mountains. The name of the town derives from the native word for “bay of quiet waters” Neqpo’sp. Nakusp settlement history began in 1892. Since there were no roads or railways between the Kootenay mining areas and Vancouver, goods had to be shipped via waterways all the way up the Arrow Lakes to Revelstoke where the main CPR line was located. With its strategic location and sheltered bay, Nakusp developed into a thriving community on this shipping route. Of the early buildings in Nakusp, only a few remain. Of these, the Leland Hotel on the waterfront, which was built in the 1890s, has been in operation ever since. Today, Nakusp offers visitors a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for a vacation. In the summer there is fishing, boating, houseboating, swimming, snorkelling, walking, hiking, biking, camping and golfing. For a more leisurely adventure, check out the many downtown shops and restaurants, or bask on the warm sand at the public beach.
ANCIENT HEALING WATERS AWAIT
No visit to the Nakusp area is complete without spending some time luxuriating in the healing waters of the nearby hot springs. The Visitor Centre on 6th Avenue near Broadway is a great place to get more information on accommodations, hot springs, trail maps and more.
Relax and enjoy our world renowned mineral pools, accommodations and full service spa. Experience gourmet food in the Kingfisher Restaurant and Lounge. 68KM SOUTH OF REVELSTOKE ON ARROW LAKE

Halcyon Hot Springs
Nakusp Hot Springs
Knights & M’ Ladies
The Upper Arrow Lakes hot springs has a colourful history full of hope, healing aspirations and relaxation. First discovered by native peoples, it was fought over, made peace over, then built up from humble beginnings to the beautiful resort it is today.
Tucked away in the Selkirk mountains, the circular hot springs pool at Nakusp Hot Springs is a sparkling gem set in an ampitheatre-like surround. The pool is divided into two parts. The larger part is filled with warm water, and the smaller part is for bathers who like it hotter.
Halcyon Hot Springs Village & Spa is a spectacular lakeshore getaway that is open year-round. The warm pool on its upper level is a wonderful place to relax. Enjoy the jetted swim channel, transfer yourself to the steaming hot pool, wait till you’re almost too hot, then fix yourself with a plunge into the mountain stream cold of the smallest pool. A lower terrace features a mineral swimming pool plus a spray park that the kids will love.
To get to the hot springs (wholly owned and operated by the Village of Nakusp) drive out of town 12 kms up a paved and well maintained mountain road. In earlier times there was only a path. Guides with pack-horses used to pick up and escort the visitors who had arrived by sternwheeler to Nakusp’s dock.
Amazing contests and displays of derring-do are coming to Nakusp the weekend of July 23 and 24. So is fun, feasting, entertainment and learning for the whole family! The Nakusp Medieval Society, in partnership with the Society for Creative Anachronism, is once again hosting the incredible event that last year drew over 2,000 participants and spectators.
Since the resort is perched just above the lake, why not rent a kayaks or canoe and explore the niches and rock bluffs of the shoreline. Fishing is great on Arrow Lake and many have caught a good trout or dolly from the Halcyon dock. Go for a hike on the area trails, great exercise made all the better by the prospect of a lovely meal at Halcyon Hot Springs Resort afterwards and a warm soak before turning in for the night. Visit www. halc yon-hotsprings.com for hours and rates.
The water that flows from deep in the ground has about a dozen different minerals dissolved or in suspension. You can find out more about that at www.nakusphotsprings. com After enjoying the soothing waters, go hiking and mountain biking, or camp at the resort’s campground in the serene setting of a grove of old growth cedars and hemlocks on Kuskanax Creek.

If you love watching ancient and almost forgotten technology in action, this is the festival for you. Blacksmiths, bowyers, fletchers, archers, potters and bakers, weavers and spinners will be set up in the re-created medieval village. If you’re a history buff or a fashionista, you’ll be blown away by the intricacies of the homemade clothes which run the gamut from royal robes to homespun peasant garb. And then there are the soldiers, who bear the colossal weight of medieval armour and yet are ready to battle. The event takes place at an 80 acre site on the Hot Springs Road, providing plenty of space and very little intrusion from the 21st century. Visit the website w w w.medievaldays.ca. Medieval garb is not compulsory, but visitors are encouraged to have fun and dress up.

Markets And More
Cool Camping
Shopping in Nakusp? Then don’t miss the Friday market (1 to 6 pm) at the old firehall on 5th Avenue just north of Broadway, and the Nakusp Farmers Market that takes place 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. The farmers market on 5th Avenue just south of Broadway, features a wide variety of handicrafts, baking, plants, produce and miscellaneous articles.
Nakusp has some great camping areas. The Nakusp Municipal campground is located in the heart of the village, close walking distance to the public beach, playgrounds, ball fields, shopping and restaurants. Sites are treed, some are powered and there are showers, water fill-ups and a sani-dump on site (also huckleberry bushes). It is open May-October. Outside of town, there are a number of private campgrounds and provincial parks with fantastic recreation opportunities.
The smaller communities around Nakusp also have markets. Burton Farmers Market is open on Sundays, 10 am to 2 pm. They start later on in the year, usually June, July and August. Edgewood has their market every other Saturday and New Denver’s is the Friday Market. For exact times and dates, visit www.nakusparrowlakes.com
Canada Day Celebrations Friday, July 1st is Canada’s birthday and the fun starts at 10 am in Nakusp with a pancake breakfast by the volunteer firefighters! After you’re nice and full, it will be time for the parade. The street will fill with excited families to watch the floats. There are all kinds of activities at the park to take in later, such as kids’ races, skateboard/ BMX competition, concession, beer garden and music. A fireworks show tops it all off just after dark. Come down to the waterfront for the best view.
Rest, Refresh, Rejuvenate...at the
Cottage in Hil ls
McDonald Creek Provincial Park is located 12 kms south of Nakusp on Hwy 6, heading towards Burton. McDonald Creek features 73 campsites, several kilometres of fine sandy beach, waterfront sites and open grassy meadows. You can always find a quiet spot for yourself, try some beachcombing or join in the fun at the main swimming area. If you have a boat, the park has a boat launch. Time to get on the lake! Bring your rod and enjoy fishing for bull and rainbow trout. Heading southeast towards New Denver, you reach Summit Lake. Take a day or a couple of weeks to enjoy Three Islands Resort or Summit Lake Provincial Park. The resort offers pull-through and tenting sites. Enjoy beautiful mountain and lake views, friendly staff, and great amenities. Reservations by phone only. Visitors can enjoy canoeing, fishing and swimming. There is a boat launch, covered picnic shelters and a day use area. As you continue towards New Denver, you will come to the hamlet of Rosebery. Rosebery used to be the northern mooring of the Slocan Lake railway barge. Rosebery Provincial Park is a densely treed park with 36 spacious campsites right on Wilson Creek. The logging road that runs alongside Wilson Creek is a bumpy 24 kilometres long before you get to the beautiful Wilson Falls, but the drive is worth it. Take it slow! A little closer to New Denver you will find Wilson Creek Resort. The amenities are plentiful, it has two public beaches and you can book a bike or a kayak tour. And for those who can’t leave the electronics at home, internet!

NEW DENVER
New Denver
The Kohan Reflection Garden
The first prospectors arrived in New Denver in 1892 and with the advent of major mineral discoveries, and with great hopes, the town was first established as El Dorado. During the 1940s, long after the excitement of those prospectors had dimmed, Canadian citizens of Japanese descent were forcibly resettled here. The Nikkei Centre and Kohan Reflection Garden tell their stories.
This Japanese-style garden was established to honour the many Canadian citizens of Japanese heritage who were forcibly resettled to the BC interior in 1942. It is a serene lakeside setting for contemplation and enjoyment of the natural and artful landscapes.
Located on the shores of pristine Slocan Lake, beneath the snowfields of the Valhalla Glacier, the picturesque town of New Denver is a delightful place to wander around. This turn-of-the-century community has some wonderful buildings that are being restored to their former glory. Take a spot at the campground right on Slocan Lake (first come first served), and spend half the day on the beach. Ask at the Visitor Centre in the old Bank of Montreal building for guides and maps to some of New Denver’s great historical trails and hikes. Explore the main street with its very cool shops and galleries and be sure to grab a snack or a meal at one of this small town’s original bistros.
Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre During World War II, over 22,000 Japanese-Canadians were forcibly resettled in camps in the interior of BC; 4000 of these were resettled in New Denver. The Nikkei Centre tells their story. The National Historic Site consists of five buildings, three of which are the original huts built in 1942. Inside you will see the furnishings used in daily life. At times two families occupied one hut, one family on either side of a common kitchen. Toilet facilities, rows of outhouses, are also preserved. Exhibits in the large central hall display the equipment, tents, desks and other luggage used by the Nikkei – all they had been allowed to keep or could build. After the war, the families left behind remarkable gardens filled with flowers, vegetables, native species and cherry trees. It is also the site of the Heiwa Teien Peace Garden, designed by Mr. Roy Sumi. The centre is open May 1 to September 30, daily between 10 am and 5 pm.
From downtown, head down Union street and cross the bridge over Carpenter Creek. The Kohan Garden is a short walk along lst Avenue down to the shore of Lake Slocan. Pick up a Kohan Garden Map and Plant Key from the New Denver Centennial campground attendant, Site #6. It’s available for a $1.00 donation to the SLUGS (the society that conceived and maintains the garden.) It will serve as your guide to the 210 different varieties of plants you will see as you stroll along.
New Denver Friday Market From the first Friday in June until the last Friday in September, a vacant lot in downtown New Denver is transformed into a market square. Between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm, come downtown with your basket and browse. The market features locally grown vegetables, flowers, fruit and herbs. You can also peruse the works of artists and artisans from all over the Kootenays. Your shopping experience is enhanced by the sounds from local musicians on fiddle, flute or guitar.

SILVERTON/SANDON
Silverton
Sandon
Silverton “the Beautiful was first settled in 1892 by miners working the south face of Idaho Mountain, extracting the rich deposits of lead and silver. By the late 1890s the town had six hotels, three general stores, a newspaper, a school and telephone connections to the mines in New Denver and Sandon.
In the 1890s, Sandon sprang into existence as Canada’s richest silver mining community. The frenzied rush and wild speculation that surrounded Sandon equalled the magnitude of the great gold rushes. Before the bubble burst, Sandon had grown to a city of 8000 with 29 hotels, 28 saloons, banks, 2 railways and dozens of stores and businesses. One of Sandon’s unique features was a boardwalk built over top of Carpenter Creek which was flumed right down the middle of a downtown street!

Silverton’s Canada Day
The Village of Silverton celebrates every year on July 1st. This year marks the 123rd anniversary for this family oriented event. There is something for everyone to enjoy, starting with a pancake breakfast at the Memorial Hall, followed by a parade down main street led again this year by the RCMP and a Kiltie Bagpipe Band. Children ride their decorated bikes and all the flags of Canada will be on display, carried by local school students and other special guests. Bocce teams will be vying for cash prizes in the tournament and children are invited to take part in a variety of fun games, including a treasure hunt. Bavarian gardens, show and shine, dog show, antique equipment and blacksmith display will entertain the young and young at heart, culminating in the best fireworks show in the valley! Silverton is a quiet village that is the perfect place to relax with family and enjoy a day away from the ordinary. The Canada Day celebrations are hosted by the dedicated Community Club members of Silverton and surrounding areas.

Welcome to the best kept secret in the Kootenays – Slocan – a picturesque lakeshore village that lies at the south end of pristine Slocan Lake. Guarded by the Valhallas in the Selkirk Mountain range, our friendly and safe community is a wonderful place to visit or live. We enjoy four distinct seasons with very different activities available during each one (see our list below.) We are a very diverse population, ranging from young families to retirees. Here there is something for everyone regardless of age, from sitting on the beach reading a book to rock climbing along the shores of the lake. No cell phone service in most of our valley. We have a pay phone on Harold Street!

Slocan Valley Mountains, lakes, the serene beauty of the wide and winding Slocan River, the country roads and the friendly villages all combine to make the valley an inspiring place to visit. Valley residents make the most of the multipurpose path – rich in wildlife and unusually wind sheltered – that they rescued from the old rail line that used to run along the length of the river.

Access to the park is by trail north of the lake, by boat across the lake, or by road south of the lake from Slocan or Passmore.
Unity Music Festival Unity Music Festival is a sweet family festival on the beautiful beach of Slocan. Unity, held this year from July 15 – 17, features many genres of world and dance music that will delight everyone’s tastes. It’s also a showcase for the talented local artists of the Kootenays. “This area is a hotbed of performing arts. Offering showcase opportunities to our local performers along with headliners is key to the heart of this project,” say the festival organizers.

Winlaw Regional and Nature Park Winlaw Regional and Nature Park is a 22.7 acre parcel of land located just north of the Winlaw Bridge on the west shore of the Slocan River. The park land was once old growth forest made up of cedar, cottonwood, spruce and hemlock. The original forest was logged, and the site burned in the early 1900s. You can still see the large stumps throughout the park’s forest. Iin 1971 the area was designated as an area for recreation and public enjoyment. In 1984 the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) began working on a Park Plan and by 1989 became
the owners of the Winlaw Regional and Nature Park. Community volunteers have worked hard to maintain it ever since. A grant helped develop the beach and trail systems. The beach area includes washrooms, change rooms and a covered gazebo. Two newly-replaced boardwalks over wetland areas are a key part of the trail system, as is the quiet service lane which provides maintenance access. The rest of the park is forest and wetlands with trails meandering along the river and into the forest. W i n l a w Regional and Nature Park is used every day of the year. This is where the locals go to enjoy the woods and river, to see wildlife, to walk dogs, to count the birds, to snowshoe or ski, to have picnics, to swim and to build sand castles and visit with each other while

CASTLEGAR
Castlegar Embraced within the valley where the Columbia and Kootenay rivers converge, Castlegar is a small city with a big heart. Situated at the intersection of highways leading to Nelson, Trail, the Slocan Valley and Grand Forks, each within an hour’s drive, Castlegar is the ideal destination for your full West Kootenay vacation experience. Castlegar is also home to the West Kootenay Regional Airport.
Visit a National Historic Site The Brilliant Bridge. This suspension bridge over the Kootenay River was built in 1913 by the Doukhobor community. It took more than 40 men seven months to build the suspension bridge for which they received no pay – as was the communal way. The wooden-decked bridge was in use until 1966 and would have been demolished had it not been for the efforts of a passionate group determined to save it for future generations. See www.brilliantbridge.ca
Go Golfing Castlegar has two courses! The Castlegar Golf Club has hosted the provincial Ladies, Men, Senior and Junior Championship events (see www.golfcastlegar.com) and then there’s the Little Bear Golf Course, a 9-hole executive par 3 course on Waterloo Road.
Catch a Show at the Element Club in downtown Castlegar or at Chances Gaming Centre near the Castlegar Airport. See pennywiseads.com for the latest scheduling.
Go Hiking Pack a lunch and strike out for viewpoints where the vistas will take your breath away. The Visitor Centre staff can get you on your way with maps and current info, or go to www.friendsoftrails.org
Zuckerberg Island This strategically located little island at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia rivers was a winter camp for the Lakes Salish people thousands of years ago. Traces of their semi-underground dwellings and a small contemporary reconstruction serve as a reminder of long ago life in the Kootenays. In 1935 Estonian born Alexander Zuckerberg, a passionate educator, social activist, devotee of Leo Tolstoy and amateur sculptor, bought the island. The Chapel House he hand built is a wonderfully individual building, just like its builder. The Chapel House is open in the summer months as are the grounds and woods which can be reached only via the pedestrian suspension bridge from downtown Castlegar. BC, Canada

Visit the Station Museum Standing since 1906, the old Canadian Pacific Railway Station now houses two floors of exhibits ranging from the reconstructed living quarters of its original station master to period clothing and agriculture. The station housed Castlegar’s first Provincial Police detachment, which has been restored.
Go Marketing! Castlegar’s marketplace is beside the Station Museum, May to October, on Saturdays from 9 am until 1 pm; and in Robson (across the Columbia River from downtown Castlegar) on Sundays, 9 am to 2 pm at the Robson Recreation Hall, 3067 Waldie Ave.
Visit Kootenay Gallery This regional gallery across from the Castlegar airport has two exhibition spaces, a great gift shop, and butterfly and xeriscape gardens with interpretive signage, perfect for strolling. www.kootenaygallery.com
Go to the Fair! The 3rd Annual Spring Farm Fair, May 14, 11 am to 5 pm is at the Pass Creek Regional Exhibition Grounds. Castlegar’s salute to country living! Two petting zoos, free horse and carriage rides, locally made and grown plant, vine and fruit tree starts, chicks, crafts and lots of great eats. This is a golden opportunity to share an overthe-fence conversation with southern interior farmers. The event is free to the public. Farmers and vendors are asked to please register on line at www.passcreekfair.com
Sunfest June 3, 4 and 5 Come downtown Friday night to the park (bring a lawn chair if you want to sit down) and join the residents for dinner and some fine toe-tapping country tunes. On Saturday morning, follow the parade to the park, where you’ll see food and merchandise vendors, and a stage jam packed all day with magic shows and local entertainment. The Saturday night energy will be hopping right until dark when the fireworks light up the night sky.

Kootenay Festival July 23 10:30 am to 7 pm. The venue, Millennium Park, is a gorgeous green space along the banks of the Columbia. A smorgasbord of Kootenay talent will be there to entertain you on the open air stage … there’s an extra special lineup for children too. This festival has always been proud to showcase aboriginal dancers and musicians from both near and far. The Kootenay Festival is always a great gathering and a memorable day in the summertime.
Do The Sculpturewalk: Castlegar is recognized as the Sculpture Capital of Canada™. Don’t forget to vote
for the People’s Choice Award. The winning sculpture will be purchased by the city to be placed on permanent display. Get maps at the Visitor Centre or local businesses.
In 1908 the largest internal migration in Canada took place when 5000 Doukhobors moved away from Saskatchewan to the Castlegar area. They felt compelled to leave the prairies after the government seized the land where they had originally sought refuge from persecution in their native Russia. Their leader, Peter Verigin, led his people to the river valley he called Dolina Ootischenia, the Valley of Consolation, and negotiated the purchase of land. Here the Doukhobors built an agrarian commune based on the motto of “Toil and Peaceful Life”. The orchard land first purchased in 1908 is the setting for the Discovery Centre. Inside the ten buildings of this recreated and restored community you will see over 1000 artifacts representing the arts and crafts, customs and religion of their communal lifestyle. Stroll through the spacious grounds and admire the gardens and heritage plants. For more information: www.Doukhobor-Museum.org
Plenty Of Peonies
Go Fishing: The Columbia River system around Castlegar is an excellent angling area that offers fishing for multiple species, from rainbow trout and walleye to bass and whitefish. There is also a healthy number of sturgeon in the river. It is illegal to fish for sturgeon, so if by chance you do hook one of these prehistoric beauties, release the lines as soon as possible without harming the fish. Visit www.castlegarflyshop.ca for more information about fishing in Castlegar.
7th Annual Garden & Nature Fest Come to the Castlegar Community Complex Saturday, May 28 from 10 am to 3 pm. Admission is free! Browse over forty booths related to food production, organic growing, invasive plants, composting, local conservation areas – just about anything to do with our relationship with plants, nature and the environment. Looking for something besides plants? Other treasures are metal garden art, concrete stepping stones, birdbaths, and mosaics. Not-for-profit and educational groups will be on hand to enhance your awareness of Kootenay-local topics.
Do you remember your first peony? Watching the big round buds emerge from the bright green foliage, ants sneaking over and around them, then the impossibly complex opening of the gorgeous multi-petalled blossom? Local growers are encouraged to enter their blooms into the peony show on Friday afternoon, June 10. These will be judged the next morning and will be on display in the afternoon at the Castlegar Community Complex. Saturday workshops include learning artistic flower arranging among other things! ROSSLAND
Sky High Rossland Tucked high in the Monashee Mountains, Rossland is set on the slopes of an ancient volcanic valley, and is the Kootenay mountain city to top all mountain cities. In 1890, the Le Roi mine was the claim that started it all, and between the years of 1901 and 1916, 50% of the entire gold production of British Columbia came from the mines on Rossland’s Red Mountain. When Rossland was a gold rush town in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was one of the largest cities in Western Canada. By 1897, the town had 42 saloons, 4 banks and 17 law firms.
A smelter was built in the valley below, giving birth to the City of Trail. The mines and smelter were amalgamated in 1906 to form the company now known as Teck Resources Ltd. Today Rossland has experienced a second boom. This time the gold is not in Red Mountain, but on it. In the summer, Rossland has the title of Mountain Bike Capital of Canada. The wagon road, rail grades, and pack trails left over from Rossland’s mining heyday have resulted in a legacy of hundreds of kilometres of trails surrounding the town. Rossland’s flagship trail is the internationally respected IMBA Epic Seven Summits Ride, a 36 km trail along the ridgeline of seven mountains. The area’s extensive trail network (over 200 kms of maintained, labelled and authorized singletrack trails!) attracts both enthusiasts and hardcore bikers. If biking is not your passion, there are plenty of festivals and events, as well as golfing, dining, hiking and fishing. Learning the new sport of disc golf at the Rossland course is a great way to pass the day with friends. Besides the incredible wealth of outdoor activities you can experience when you stay in Rossland, there are many other great reasons to visit. If strolling better matches your speed, check out Rossland’s great little boutiques and cafes and what’s happening in the pubs. For more information visit www.tourismrossland.com.

Every year since 1987, Rossland’s unique theatre group, The Gold Fever Follies, has been entertaining visitors and locals with their live performances based on Rossland’s exciting gold rush days of the late 1890s. Each summer a new musical revue comes to you live on stage, embellished with local lore, old time tunes and real Cancan dancers. While artistic license is often in play, many of the characters are based on real people from Rossland’s past.

TRAIL
Trail
Cruisin’ The Columbia
The City of Trail is located on the banks of the Columbia River, flanked by the Monashee Mountains to the west and the Selkirk Mountains to the east. Trail is culturally and historically a mining town. The discovery of gold/copper ore on the face of Red Mountain was the single most important event in the history of Trail. The first smelter to process the ore was constructed in 1896 and its success spurred the growth of the town and the whole region nearby.
The 7th annual Smoke´n Steel “Cruisin´ the Columbia” show and shine will be held Saturday, June 18 at Gyro Park. This venue features a grass area where the exhibits will be parked and numerous shade trees to keep things cool. The show goes on from 11 am until 3 pm.
Citizens of Trail have always been active in sports and have brought many British Columbia, Canadian and even World titles back to this region. Recreational facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports are extensive! The Home of Champions monument downtown recognizes the importance Trail places on excellence in sport, as does the Sports Hall of Fame located in the Trail Memorial Centre where you’ll also find, among other things, a collection of Interior Salish artifacts. Trail’s must-dos include a stroll to the 75 businesses on the IncrEdible Green Route. Help yourself to the produce they are growing! Pick up a walking tour guide at the Visitor Centre (1199 Bay Avenue, downtown) and hike the historic rock walls and covered staircases. There is plenty of access to shore fishing along the Columbia River near Trail. Bring your rod and take a day for some of the best rainbow trout and walleye fishing anywhere. The largest rainbow trout in the world was caught here in 2004, weighing 24.4 lbs. For more information find Trail on the web at www.trail.ca
Following the car show, there will be a dance at the Trail Memorial Centre. Open to the general public, live music by the Kootenay All Stars featuring Gary Stewart will get you on your feet, dancing to music that spans the hit parade from the fifties and up. Tickets are $25 each or 2 for $40, music starts at 8:30 pm, cash bar on site (sorry no minors.) Tickets include a midnight snack. Space is limited so get your tickets early. You won’t want to miss this! Call 250-367-6503 or visit www.smokensteelcarclub.com

TRAIL
Silver City Days It’s always been old home week in Trail when Silver City Days roll around. This year, a whole new energy is infusing the five-day festival, May 4 – 8. There is a real buzz about town because some events from long ago that were special favourites are returning – plus there will be a spectacular new event – The West Kootenay Lumberjack Show. So what’s old is new again! Like the great barefoot challenge – The Grape Stomp. Cheer on a local council member as he or she gets down and juicy in a barrel on the stage at the Saturday Sidewalk CafÊ. Like in the old days, the Sidewalk Cafe is back in the arena and the squishing starts at 2 pm.
The arena is definitely the place to be on Saturday after the parade. Live music of all kinds, and other acts you’d be hard pressed to describe, will keep you entertained. Italian specialties will be served to keep your energy levels up for the dance Saturday evening – which will be bumping, no doubt. Make sure you check out the Spokane Street Food Fair and go on the rides at the midway – classic rides like bumper cars, a ferris wheel and the Zipper (maybe do the midway first and eat later?)
Love kilts and bagpipes? You’re in luck! The Trail Pipe Band is hosting the annual Spring Fling Bagpipe Competition during Trail Silver City Days. They will be leading the parade to the arena on Saturday. If you’ve never seen a lumberjack show, you must go to Gyro Park on Sunday. The terrific competition between male and female lumberjacks and what they are capable of will make you roar along with the rest of the crowd. For a full schedule of events at Silver City Days, see www.trail.ca and search for Silver City Days.

For over 100 years there has been a smelting industry in Trail, and today Teck’s Trail Operations are one of the largest zinc and lead smelting complexes in the world. Using state of the art technology and employing 1,500 people, Teck’s smelting and refining complex at Trail produces a wide range of metals and related products. The smelter was originally built to process concentrates from local mines; concentrates are now purchased from mines throughout the world. Why not take a free guided tour of the giant smelter facilities? The tours begin at 10 am any weekday during July and August from the Teck Interpretive Centre and take approximately two hours. The rest of the year they must be booked a day in advance. The tours involve extensive walking and stairs, and are not wheelchair accessible. Children under 12 years of age and those with pacemakers are not permitted to participate in the onsite tours, but are most welcome to experience the interpretive centre. Flat, enclosed walking shoes, slacks, and long sleeved shirts or jackets are required. Tobacco products, cameras, cell phones and video equipment are not permitted on-site at Trail Operations. Call the Trail Chamber of Commerce at 250-368-3144 to book a tour. Take advantage of this great opportunity to experience the innovative processes at Teck’s Trail Operations. The centre, located above the TD Bank in downtown Trail, #200-1199 Bay Avenue, is open 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

FRUITVALE
Fruitvale Located in the Beaver Valley a short distance from both Trail and Salmo, Fruitvale is known for its lovely natural surroundings. The air and water are clean, the scenery pastoral and the people friendly. Fruitvale was originally named Beaver Siding when it was a railway stop for the great Northern Railroad. In 1906, Fruitvale Limited purchased a great deal of land on both sides of this stop and changed the name to Fruitvale. This name played an important part in the company’s marketing and settlement strategy which depicted Fruitvale as the best fruit growing area in the West Kootenay. Today, Fruitvale is mainly a residential area for retirees and employees working in industries located in and around the area. However, in the downtown core, there are some great stores that will surprise and delight visitors. A lively volunteer spirit is evident at many locations in and around the village. The Beaver Valley Blooming Society is one example. In the summertime it is easy to see why Fruitvale was voted a 5 Bloom winner in the Communities in Bloom provincial competition! Come visit Fruitvale on the last weekend of May to take part in the festivities of the annual historic Beaver Valley May Days (102 years and counting). It all starts Friday with the Citizen of the Year presentation and a great fireworks display. Saturday is filled with activities such as the Fruitvale Express train rides to Beaver Falls, the parade through downtown Fruitvale, kids’ games at the arena, food vendors, ball tournaments, the “Beavarian” beer garden and much more, all at Haines Park throughout the day and into Sunday. This weekend fun is organized by the volunteer BV May Days Society. Recreation is important in the Beaver Valley area. Facilities include an ice arena, soccer fields, baseball/ softball parks, curling rink, bowling alley, horseman’s grounds, and campgrounds. Boating, fishing, cross country skiing, the Champion Lakes Golf & Country Club and Champion Lakes are also popular attractions. The Beaver Valley area contains two community halls (one in Fruitvale and one in Montrose), a public library and the Park Siding Historical Log School site.
Planning a Special Event?
Try A New Sport! If you are looking for a great family activity, that’s free to boot, try out Disc Golf at the Beaver Valley Family Park. Rossland has a course and now the Beaver Valley has one too. Disc Golf is frequently called “the fastest growing sport in America.” There are national competitions and clubs and courses springing up all over the Pacific Northwest and now British Columbia. There are so many reasons why this sport – a combination of frisbee and golf – is taking off, but the best reason is that anyone can play it and have fun – grandmas, little kids and teens, the whole family, from the athletes to self-styled klutzes. You can play it by yourself or in teams, you don’t need any special equipment besides the discs, and you can get your buddies together and play the sport at almost any time of year. The Beaver Valley Family Park at Marsh Creek is also a great place for a picnic, or a family reunion. In addition to the brand new 18 tee disc golf course, there is a playground, volleyball and basketball courts, a field large enough for football and soccer and plenty of hiking trails for exploring the valley. The park also has a number of trailer and tent sites (June 1 to Labour Day) available with water and electricity. Other amenities are showers, a covered kitchen area, a 40 by 40 foot cement pad that is great for dancing and a lovely gazebo. For more information on the Beaver Valley Family Park, call 250-367-9319.

Camp At Champion Lakes Provincial Park This park consists of a series of three small lakes. It’s a canoeist’s dream and an ideal place for the whole family, with an adventure playground and the “safe for kids” shallow swimming area right next to the campground. You’ll enjoy the weekend interpretive programs, and the many nature walking trails. These lakes are regularly stocked with rainbow trout. Canoeing and kayaking are popular on the lakes, but powerboats are prohibited. The park is situated off Hwy 3B between Salmo and Trail, and 5 km east of Fruitvale.
Camp Tweedsmuir Trails Two kilometres south of Fruitvale is where you will find Camp Tweedsmuir, long used as a summer site for Scouts Canada. Ramble along the gentle and well maintained walking trails through pleasant woodlands within earshot of rumbling creeks. The trails are two easy loops that climb and fall as they meander through the forested camp. The single track trails are also ideal for beginner to intermediate mountain bikers.

SALMO
Salmo
Shambhala Music Festival
Salmo, Erie and Ymir were small mining towns that grew up along the right-of-way of the historic Nelson/ Fort Sheppard Railway during the gold rush years of 1896 and 1897. Salmo’s first name, when it was merely a stop along the way to Nelson from Spokane, was Salmon Siding. Gold, silver, lead, zinc and tungsten were mined in the surrounding mountains and Salmo grew as a centre for supplies and entertainment. The Salmo River valley was famous for the large cedars that grew there. The early logging industry and forest fires have destroyed much, but isolated stands can still be found, and huge stumps show the size of the old trees. Today, Salmo calls itself the “Hub of the Kootenays because it lies at the junction of two main highways. It is a quiet, friendly village with a population of 1120. The main industries are logging and tourism. The municipal campground in the centre of town has a wooded setting with a fun playground, washrooms and showers. If you’re equipped, it is the perfect home base for hiking, camping, fishing or just strolling through town. Salmo also has an outdoor swimming pool if you’re inclined to swim a few laps or want to splash around with the kids on a hot summer day. Visit the oldest telephone booth in the world, which is the stump of a huge ancient cedar tree trunk located next to the Sal-Crest Motel. Out at the Salmo Ski Hill there are some great mountain biking trails for every level of rider and an awesome little mogul dirt park for BMX riding. If golf is your passion, be sure to try out the Salmo golf course. Tee times are not required and children under 12 play free with an adult golfer.
For four days, August 5-8, the Salmo River Ranch will be reborn as a multi-media musical empire. In 2011 in London, England, Shambhala was named Best Large Festival at the 10th Annual Breakspoll International Breakbeat Awards. Over the last few years two community groups have been working hard to make the Salmo Ski Hill a hub for summer recreation. The volunteers have already established a couple of easy walking trails. The Sunset Loop and Sunrise Trail start at the lodge and are both approximately 3 kilometres. From the top of the ski hill, Drifter is a popular black diamond downhill mountain bike trail that runs to Ski Hill Road on the east side of the ski hill. Hikers are welcome but be prepared for challenging terrain! An intermediate level mountain biking trail is now in the works. Before you head up to the ski hill, take advantage of a small bike skills area at KP Park downtown in Salmo. There are dirt jumps, a pump track and a few easy wood features – it’s the perfect opportunity to tune up your balance and to check your bike. West Kootenay BMX, located at the Salmo Ski Hill, operates from late April into October. Cheer on the racers at the regular midday Saturday races or on a Monday evening in July and August. BMX racing is an exciting family sport for all ages. Children as young as two years old come to play at the dirt course on their balance bikes. The BMX Canada-sanctioned track is located at the Salmo Ski Hill in the land below the parking lot. For access turn right on Salmo Heights Road before the ski hill and follow the signs. NELSON
Nelson The Victorian heritage of the Queen City can be seen on just about every corner. Its contemporary face is the energy of its people – an energy that inspires the art you will find displayed in the shops and restaurants, or exemplified by the unique businesses that thrive in this well-supported local economy. Set on the shores of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake and surrounded by the Selkirk mountain range, Nelson is home to approximately 10,000 souls. Over the years, good planning decisions have maintained or created many pleasing public spaces. Nelson is a very liveable small city – whatever your income or stage in life. “This small town of 10,000 people create some of the most unique works I’ve laid eyes on (and tasted). Even after living in an urban area of two million people in the States and visiting many artistic communities, Nelson is, per capita, astounding… Walk down Baker Street—the main thoroughfare of town— and you’ll see what I mean. The sensory overload spills down adjoining streets, only stopped by Kootenay Lake’s shoreline.” Lisa Monforton, Calgary Herald But of course it wasn’t always this way. In the late 1880s it was a rough camp which catered to the needs of miners drawn to the area by a silver rush. Located at the foot of Toad Mountain, the camp grew rapidly into a town, and by the early 1900s Nelson boasted several fine hotels, a number of churches, substantial residences and elegant public buildings. Incorporated as a city in 1897, with a population of 1000, Nelson owes many of its beautiful buildings to the civic pride of its early citizens. At the end of the 19th century, mining began to take a reduced role in the city’s prosperity. In the early 1900s, fruit ranching became important in the Kootenay Lake valley to the north of Nelson. During that time, Nelson businesses provided the ranchers with supplies. Today, Nelson’s economy is very diverse. The ingenuity of the
people who continue to migrate to Nelson (joining others whose families have already made that choice), coupled with the self-sufficiency that is a requirement for a town four hours away from a major city, forge an altogether unique combination of enterprises. Check out Nelson’s restaurants for ethnic, traditional, or vegetarian dining to satisfy every taste. Accommodation can be found from charming bed and breakfast inns on the shores of the lake to full service hotels. Take in a world class performance at the Capitol Theatre, or soak up Nelson’s period charm by going on a Walking or Driving Tour. Visit the art galleries, museums, or remarkable shops on famous Baker Street.
Try A Birdseye View Would you like to get a birdseye view of the Kootenays? Feel the air buffeting as you climb higher and higher? Do you have a dream of fishing a lake that is so remote that you can’t get there by road or by hiking? Riding a bike on top of the world in extreme terrain? Would you like to have a picnic on a mountaintop while savouring the view? Take a tour of the Kokanee Glacier or Valhalla Mountains? High Terrain Helicopters, based in Nelson can make these fantastic adventures a reality. For information on flying fun, call 250-354-8445 or visit www.highterrainhelicopters.com
City Camping Nelson has a charming campground within walking distance of the downtown core, the mall and the beach. Nelson City Campground is so centrally located you can be just about anywhere in minutes – Baker Street, Lakeside Park, the aquatic centre… Enjoy all the amenities of the city while camping! Nelson, a reMARKETable Town for Farm Fresh and Local Made... Garden Festival
Marketfest
Many Market Days
The Nelson Garden Festival is back, and it is bigger and better than ever! Whether you’re landscaping or planning a tomato crop, you’ll find it all at the West Kootenay EcoSociety’s 15th Annual Nelson Garden Festival. It takes place on Saturday, May 7, in downtown Nelson on the 200 block of Baker Street, from 10 am to 3 pm, rain or shine and it’s free.
How can you not love a block party on a summer’s night? When the evenings warm up, Baker Street heats up as Marketfest spills out over the sidewalks and onto the pavement. These street parties are filled with 100 vendors, kids’ entertainment and bands playing on two stages. There is a Marketfest for each summer month – June 24, July 22 and August 26. These family-friendly events run from 6 pm to 10:30 pm on the 200 and 300 blocks of Baker Street. A $5 donation for admission is requested for anyone over 18 to help cover costs. Plan to join the fun. More info? Visit ecosociety.ca
The West Kootenay EcoSociety is the force behind the great outdoor markets in Nelson. There are two markets operating weekly from spring to fall months. Offered is an array of products: organic produce, great sweet and savoury food, clothing, jewellery, collectibles, books and more. Neighbours support each other at these markets, since 80% of each vendor’s wares must be made locally. It’s a do-good and feel-good coming together, and everyone has a good time.
Don’t forget to pick up something for the Mom you love best in your life. Always scheduled on the Mother’s Day weekend, the festival has plenty of plants and flowers to make her feel special. The festival has grown from a few booths in 2001 to more than 60 vendors. You’ll find heritage and conventional veggie and flower starts, perennials, seeds, trees, garden furniture, even chicken manure. The conversation and local gardening advice flows along with some toetapping music. Bring a wagon or you’ll wish you had.
The Cottonwood Community Market operates Saturdays starting May 14 and is open from 9:30 am until 3 pm. Live music from 10 am to 2:30 pm. It is located at Cottonwood Falls Park. Follow the signs! The Downtown Local Market is a Wednesday market located in the 400 block of Baker Street. It starts June 15. The Wednesday market is open from 9:30 am until 3 pm.
Fresh food and the friendliest staff in town. It’s the place to be ... and be seen.

If you have a special event coming up, say a wedding, retirement or birthday party, you can reserve the streetcar for your guests to ride in style.

After the Second World War, the electric tramway service was replaced by buses. Car 23 was re-purposed as a gift shop, a storage shed, even a dog kennel before it was rescued and restoration began. The Nelson Electric Tramway Society was formed in 1988 and soon the vision to have Streetcar 23 back “on track” started to become a reality. The car made its second debut in 1992, carrying over 20,000 people in four months. Today there are over 70 volunteers who look after all aspects of the operation and new members are always welcome. These people make it possible for you to relive the past with a ride along the shore of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake from the Prestige Inn to Lakeside park, two kilometres of relaxing nostalgia. The fares are modest and the ride is great fun.
What’s In The Car Barn? Get on board the streetcar at the Prestige Lakeside Inn and then take some time to check out the Tramway Society’s museum in the Car Barn, which is where Car #23 sleeps at night in Lakeside Park. Inside the car barn you will find lots of information about Nelson’s tramway system. You will learn how trams operate and see how the streetcars are maintained. Check out the restored Birney Car, a lightweight trolley car that was innovative in its day, back in the roaring ’20s. Also on display is an impressive array of local artifacts that were donated to the society by Nelson citizens from all walks of life.

Spring Fishing In The Koots
Zip Kokanee
Imagine cruising in the boat, taking in all of the spectacular scenery that Kootenay Lake has to offer. From the beautiful sunrise and sunset, to the amazing mountains, you can see it all. Just by spending one day on the lake you could enjoy these sights plus a whole lot more – soaring ospreys, bald eagles, great blue herons, Canada geese and many species of ducks on the wing on this pristine lake.
Kokanee Mountain Zipline promises you more than an extreme ride. You will get that, for sure. But what will stay with you long after you are unlatched from your harness is the exhilarating sensation of being liberated in three dimensional space, soaring high like a bird over valleys, and under the sun. Zipping through the canopy, in between the towering fir and larch and spruce. No photograph or video can do it justice. On the zipline you move though and over the environment. It’s free falling in control – and with total safety.
And while you’re caught up in all of the amazing views and didn’t think it could get any better…zing goes your reel! The loud scream of line peeling off of your reel at a speed you can’t imagine. Every fisherman dreams of this and now you have finally hooked into the biggest rainbow trout of your life. After a twenty minute battle, you finally see this amazing specimen. A bright silver body with a beautiful red band along its side. What a great way to end your day. This can happen on any day on Kootenay Lake. And as the spring weather warms the water, these fish become more aggressive. So, chances get even better. Kootenay Lake is home to the world famous Gerrard rainbow trout and Dolly Varden, also known as bull trout. These great big fish, which feed on the smaller kokanee, are the catch of a lifetime. When you get your fishing licence, check the latest regulations. Get out and enjoy our beautiful lake. It’s a different world out there!
The first zipline is short and not too high above the ground. This zip is designed to give you confidence. Each group will have two guides. They are experts in safety, but they are experts in encouragement too. Their enthusiasm for the zipline experience is infectious; you can tell they love their jobs! For more information visit www.zipkokanee.com Reservations are a must. You can call 1-866-358-8688 or book online. The ziplining season starts in mid May.

The Kokanee Zipline experience is a 2–3 hour expedition from Kokanee Glacier Park down towards Kokanee Creek Park on six ziplines. The line takes you into and out of the Kokanee Creek canyon twice; one stage of your journey is a major valley crossing (the cable is 2400 feet long and 300 feet high above the valley floor!) From certain points you can see the west arm of Kootenay Lake far below. Midway, your guides will lead you on a nature walk through the forest and introduce you to the inland rainforest ecosystem.

To Soar Is Human It is now! You can learn to fly this summer, this year, right here, over the clear blue waters of Kootenay Lake. Experience the thrill of flight with Flyboard®, the world’s fastest growing water sport.
Lakeside Resort beside the walkway on the left side of the hotel. If the boat’s not there, it means the instructors are on the water or demonstrating the sport. You may see them swooping over the water in front of Lakeside Park or at Kokanee Creek Park, just a 15 minute drive east of the big orange bridge on Highway 3A.
Flyboarding is very intuitive. Learning to soar with Flyboard is similar to learning how to ride a bike, water-ski, surf, skate, or any activity that requires a little balance. When you find your weight centre with your toes and heels, you will be on your way to flying like a bird or swimming through the water like a dolphin. It is the ultimate jetpack experience.
Most people will feel enough in control to really have fun with flyboarding after about 20 minutes. Before you start, a certified instructor will give you flying tips and safety info. If it’s early summer and still a chilly, go with a wetsuit. Do something completely different this summer. Or just go along for the ride on their pontoon boat and see up close what it’s all about before you decide to fly.
Starting in mid May, the pontoon boat of Kootenay Flyboard will be moored at the Prestige

Tiny Lights Festival
Festival organizers have spent the last year seeking out new and innovative talent. The musicians and artists brought to you by Tiny Lights are amazingly talented but you may not have heard of them yet. With six small venues instead of one big stage, you get the kind of personal experience you get at a friend’s house. The diversity of what is on offer at this 3-day festival (June 10-12) allows you to design your own special festival experience. A few of the acts (too many to list here!) are Cam Penner, Shane Koyczan and the Short Story, The Tourist Company, The Aerialists, and The Eisenhauers.
It’s a kitchen party with over a hundred performers at seven intimate venues in the small town of Ymir, Nelson’s little laid-back and quirky bedroom community. Tiny Lights is also a coming-together place in which to share experiences and innovations. This year the festival features the Sustainability Village, a sheltered space for handson workshops as varied as hoola-hooping and beekeeping. The Sustainability Village will showcase all of the alternative, progressive and even old-fashioned ways Kootenaians live and succeed together.

Creston
Discover The Wild Side
Known today as the “Valley of Swans”, Creston has a population of approximately 5300. Surrounding orchards produce a bounty of succulent fruit and the valley’s gentle slopes are seamed with rows of grapevines. Creston’s many artists and artisans display their work in galleries and gift shops throughout town. The valley is also home to the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area which offers 32 kilometres of walking trails, birding towers and great opportunities to commune with nature at its finest.
The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area is a 17,000 acre wetland that stretches from the south end of Kootenay Lake to the US border. It is recognized internationally as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and nationally as an Important Reptile and Amphibian Area (IMPARA). Over 286 species of birds, 57 species of mammals and 29 species of fish, reptiles and amphibians call the wetland of the CVWMA home.
Birders ... Be There The amazing diversity of birds found in the Creston Valley makes the area perfect for a festival devoted to birders and the bird species which are the focus of their fascination. May 13 to 15 is the perfect time of year for this event. A variety of valley events have been planned along with several activities for children. And of course, more food, wine, cheese and juice, all from the Creston Valley. The Creston Valley is a vital birdwatching site, important bird area and staging area for migratory birds. Over three hundred species of birds have been recorded. The Bird Fest will celebrate this incredible diversity in an environmentally sensitive manner, inviting residents and visitors to expand and explore their interest in the world of birds. For more information and a schedule of events, visit crestonvalleybirds.ca
WINERY & VINEYARD

The Wildlife Interpretive Centre, located 11 km west of Creston on Hwy 3, is open May to October and it is a great place to start your adventure. Join a popular onehour guided canoe or walking tour of this lush and active wetland. Climb the two viewing towers located along the trails for breathtaking views of the valley. More Than Cheese, Please
Wonderful Wine
Kootenay Meadows Farm is certified organic, and uses sustainable management practices. It is becoming well known for the delicious cheeses produced on the farm by the Kootenay Alpine Cheese Company. The company’s own recipes, labour intensive methods which are modeled after the tradition of French and Italian cheesemakers, their careful aging of the cheeses and of course, the milk from the farm’s herd of well-loved cows, combine to ensure the rich, complex flavour that is unique to their milk, their farm, and the region.
So you only think of the sunny Okanagan when you think of BC wines? Think again! With three exceptional wineries and counting, the Creston Valley has been dubbed Canada’s next wine region. Take a wine tasting tour around Creston, and you will be impressed by the variety and quality of wines produced here.
The dairy has also been certified organic. Many West Kootenay groceries now stock their glass-bottled organic milk and cream. If you have an ice cream maker, along with fresh Kootenay Meadows cream toss in some of the valley’s beautiful fruit. The result is an absolutely over the top treat. The best store-bought ice cream cannot come close. At the cheese shop on the farm you may taste the cheese, make purchases, meet the cheese-maker and learn about how the cheese is made. Feel free to take a pasture walk around the farm. Visit the Kootenay Meadows Farm, home of the Kootenay Alpine Cheese Company, from May until Thanksgiving, Thursday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. The farm is on the corner of Sinclair Road and 16th Street, right beside Lister Park, minutes from the town of Creston and the American border. For more information visit www.kootenayalpinecheese.com
Creston Valley Farm Tours The lush and fertile Creston Valley is perfect for agritourism. Many farmers in the valley are actively pursuing this new aspect of their family business to increase their farms’ profits and to promote public awareness of the complexity and importance of agriculture. You will find farmers markets, farm tour choices, greenhouses, and u-pick operations all within a short radius of the town of Creston. Learn more about how food is grown or enjoy a glass of wine from a local winery. Shop for locally made preserves and candy, gift baskets, local artwork, soaps and honey. The Visitor Information Centre has brochures and maps of the participating farms in the valley.
Creston Farmers Market Every Saturday, from May through October, the Creston Valley Farmers Market offers up fresh quality produce and everything made, baked or grown in and around the Creston Valley. Find the market at the west end of Canyon Street near the Visitor Centre. From 9 am until 1 pm you can experience the flavours of Creston, but food is not the only attraction – an exciting array of arts and crafts and unique, locally made products will appeal to you too. The Town of Creston has very ambitious plans for a market park that will certainly become a major draw for locals and visitors. Read all about it at www.crestonvalleyfoodhub.ca
Skimmerhorn Winery & Vineyard opened in 2006. It features cool climate grapes such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Marechal Foch as well as other outstanding varietals. Skimmerhorn has a wine shop and free tasting bar, which is open Wednesday to Sunday in the spring and in the fall, daily in July and August. On weekends July through September you can take a tour. The talented and knowledgeable owner loves to share his expertise, and his anecdotes make for an entertaining and informative stroll. Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery released its first wines in November 2010. The approach at the 5000case boutique winery is to produce small lots of super premium wine. Everything is done by hand and grape cultivation favours a low yield per vine, to ensure concentrated flavours and high quality. Visit their tasting room Wednesday through Sunday from mid-June to Labour Day weekend in September. Bring a picnic and sit out and have a glass of wine by the vineyard. Tours are provided as time permits. The latest foray into the vintner’s art in the region is Wynnwood Cellars. The vines benefit from soil rich in limestone and the strong reflected light off the lake. The Wynnwood Cellars tasting room is in Wynndel, ten minutes north of Creston. Call 250-866-5155.

East Shore Creston to Kootenay Bay Following Highway 3A from Creston to the Kootenay Lake ferry, experience the delightful communities along the way. First stop is a small railway town, Sirdar. Here an Italian gold seeker decided to settle, terracing the forest hillside and establishing a fruit orchard. Kuskanook is a Kootenay Native word for “end of the lake”. Here trains met steamships on the lake in the late 1800s. It once had the reputation for being the toughest town in Western Canada. Now it is best known for its easy access boat launch.
Kootenay Lake’s Oldest & Largest General Store
Boswell owes its existence to its fruit orchards, which up until the 1930s shipped apples and cherries around the world.

Go & Do It In Balfour
Ahhh … spring and summer in Balfour. This serene village is tucked along and above the shores of Kootenay Lake. When you get near the junction of Hwy 3A and Hwy 31A, you are in Balfour country.
• Go kayaking or boating.
Balfour was originally a steamboat terminus for all the mining activities up and down Kootenay Lake. In 1889, a wealthy Englishman named Charles Busk, who envisioned Balfour becoming a centre for fruit farming and gardening, had it surveyed and staked as a townsite. The area never did become an agricultural community. Instead it has survived over the years as a popular resort for fishermen, and is the western terminal of the Kootenay Lake Ferry.
• Play nine or eighteen holes at either golf course.
You won’t see it at first glance, but 60 businesses contribute to the lifeblood of this small town. For a fabulous vacation, stay and play in Balfour. There is a varied selection of accommodations suitable for every budget, as well as fine and casual dining. Shopping is a treat in the eclectic stores. Plan to spend a wonderful day, or week or more in beautiful Balfour.
• Tour the off-road hiking and biking trails.
• Grab a cup of duck food at Gill and Gift, and wander down to the beach. Watch the ferry and feed the ducks.
• Book an adventure at the Balfour Golf Course. • Try bird watching. Many species can be spotted in Balfour. • Use the Balfour soccer field for playing softball, throwing a frisbee, kicking a soccer ball, or book it for family parties or team tournaments.
• Have lunch or dinner at the restaurants. Spend an afternoon sipping a couple of pints on the verandah at the Dock n Duck Pub. • Go swimming, water skiing, or just sit on the beach and watch the waves. • Play tennis.

AINSWORTH
Ainsworth Hot Springs Perched on a steep hillside approximately half way between Balfour and Kaslo is the quiet community of Ainsworth Hot Springs. In the early 1880s, Ainsworth became the first townsite to develop on Kootenay Lake when American born Captain George Ainsworth brought his business of transportation and mining exploration to the area. As mining ceased to be a profitable venture, the fortunes of the area diminished. At that time in history, the hot springs did not seem to be a priority in the scheme of things in Ainsworth. In the 1920s an effort was made to develop the hot springs. The mining company that owned the property decided to build a pool to be used primarily by the miners. Although the population has fallen to less than 100 permanent residents, Ainsworth is host to the many visitors who come to take advantage of the natural beauty of the area.

WOODBURY/KASLO
Woodbury Resort Like most places in the Kootenays, Woodbury began as a mining camp, serving as a supply station and often enough, home base for the miners who worked in the King Solomon, and nearby Grant and General Mines. Prospectors staked and then worked their claims all along Woodbury Creek for kilometres up into the mountains. And, as with other communities, the boom didn’t last, the mining declined and the prospectors eventually went elsewhere. Today, Woodbury’s fortune lies with its breathtaking location on Kootenay Lake amid the great outdoors. Woodbury Resort and Marina is a four-season resort that offers everything from boat rentals with or without a guide to a restaurant that is famous for its fish and chips. The laid-back atmosphere at JB’s Pub lends itself to fish tales, and the sharing of stories about exploits in the backcountry. From time to time there is musical entertainment in the pub as well. The resort has a marina, motel rooms, chalets, a campground and RV park, a store, recreation hall with daily activities for visitors and access to over 50 km of trails for the hikers and ATVers. Fishing is excellent year round and at its best in fall and winter. Kootenay Lake is famous for having some of the biggest Gerrard rainbow trout, as well as Dolly Varden (bull trout) and kokanee. The resort sponsors a Dolly Tournament at Easter and a Rainbow Tournament at Thanksgiving, the second Monday in October. Woodbury is a gateway to Kokanee Glacier Park and the Silverspray Cabin. In summer you can access the park by driving up Woodbury Creek forestry road for 13 kilometres to the trailhead. It is advisable to check with the Forest Service (250-825-1100) or the people in the know at Woodbury Resort regarding road conditions. Kaslo This village on the west side of Kootenay Lake is surrounded by majestic mountains, great forests and pristine waters. History hasn’t always been kind to Kaslo: In June 1894, following an unusually heavy snowfall and a cold wet spring, sudden warm weather caused creeks to run high. The lake rose 30 feet, flooding 70 homes and businesses. A hurricane force wind caused even more damage as anything not attached was blown around and out into the lake. To top it off, the storm cut loose a great log jam on the Kaslo River, which swept through town that night on a second wave of destruction. Undaunted, residents rebuilt and resumed their traditions. On downtown Front Street, the false wooden fronts and sturdy brick facades of Kaslo’s restored Victorian buildings lend a Norman Rockwell quality to the business core (though, on closer inspection, you can spot an Internet provider and several purveyors of cappuccino.) There are no malls here, no parking meters – drivers actually pause to chat at the four-way stop and no one honks at them! Kaslo has several great little eateries, lots of accommodation including camping and a fine hotel, and a very busy cultural calendar. The outdoor Jazz Etc. Festival in late July has been drawing crowds for the last 25 summers. The historic Langham Cultural Centre features two art galleries and a 75-seat performance theatre. And beached on the waterfront is the town’s star attraction, the 1898 SS Moyie, the oldest intact passenger sternwheeler in the world. For outdoor adventure, you can’t beat the surroundings. On a summer’s day, you can hike, golf, play tennis, fish, swim, paddle, raft or go houseboating on Kootenay Lake. Just south of town, there is underground exploration at Cody Caves Provincial Park and alpine exploration just west of Kaslo in the 320-square-kilometre Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park. Wander off the beaten path and come to Kaslo for a day, a week or forever – you’ll be welcome.

SS Moyie Anchors a-weigh! The Sweetheart of the Lake is embarking on a journey through history and you are warmly invited. For nearly 60 years, sternwheelers provided a transportation lifeline to the many isolated communities on Kootenay Lake. The SS Moyie and her sister ships literally opened the Kootenay region to miners, businesses, farmers and pioneer families. When she was launched on October 22, 1898, there were no roads, and only a few trains to the south end of Kootenay Lake and into these remote mountain valleys. The ships were the only means of mass transportation, freight and mail service. And so they came – the rich, the poor, prospectors and settlers – sailing up the pristine waterways on vessels that were remarkable for their splendour and dependability. On board, experience the re-created hum of the engines, the click of the typewriter keys in the Purser’s office, and the recorded sounds of a mother soothing her baby in the Ladies Salon. Storyboards at street level describe the scope and scale of the restorations that are still ongoing today. Now a designated National Historic Site and BC Landmark, the sternwheeler is open daily in the summers (after May 8th) for guided or self-guided tours. She is also home to the Kaslo Visitors Centre. The Moyie is located at 324 Front Street, Kaslo. For more information see www.klhs.bc.ca or phone/fax 250-353-2525.

THE ORIGIN OF EGGS BENEDICT In 1894, Lemuel Benedict, a Wall Street stockbroker, stumbled into the Waldorf Hotel hoping to find a cure for his hangover. He ordered “buttered toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon, and a hooker of Hollander.” The maitre d’hotel at the Waldorf decided the dish was delicious, and added it to his menu, replacing the bacon with ham and the toast with an English muffin.

Kaslo Saturday Market 2016 marks the fifteenth anniversary of the Kaslo Saturday Market. The market is open every Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm, June 11 through September. Besides an array of local produce and artisanal wares, there’s a ‘performers corner’ that features a different local musician every week. North “up the lake” (that’s a Kaslo expression) there is another market that takes place in the summer on Sundays, the Lardeau Valley Sunday Market, also open from 10 am to 2 pm. Expect organic local produce, Croissant Moon’s famous chocolate and savoury croissants, lots of hooping, music and a good time.
Jazz It Up The sun is shining! The crowd is stoked! You catch sight of an eagle as it catches a lift on the wind, silhouetted against mountain peaks. You’re feeling lucky – and you are – because you are at Kaslo Jazz. This year is the 25th anniversary of the festival, which takes place July 29-31. The festival was named one of the
May = Kaslo May Days 21 - 23 Come and celebrate with the locals at the rocking fun festival they have kept alive since 1892. The theme of the festival this year, The Age of Steam, could be a straightforward nod to the past. Or it may become manifest in some weird and fantastical ways, à la Steampunk. You will have to come to Kaslo to find out what that could mean! In the old days, one of the main events of May Days was a horse race down Front Street with prizes as high as $250. The other highlighted event was the Prospector’s Race, where prospectors would line up on the street with all their camping equipment. During the race, they had to pitch their tents, light a campfire, set up their cooking equipment, mix bannock and cook it.
“10 great places to get in tune, be outdoors!”
by USA Today.
Jazz may be in the festival’s name but it doesn’t end there. The Etc. part showcases the many acts who play numerous genres – blues, funk, soul, world, and Latin stylings – and several who defy or blur any stylistic boundaries you could name. Michael Franti and Spearhead are the headliners this year. Check out www.kaslojazzfest.com for the schedule, ticket prices and information about the performers.
Kaslo Mohawk Downtown Kaslo
These days, Logger Sports is an axe-swinging, ruthless competition for prizes and glory and the Saturday kids races are always a hit! The Slo-Pitch tournament runs all weekend – is mostly made up of local players, all ages – that only come together for this weekend each year. Some good competitive ball is played ’cause a year’s worth of bragging rights is on the line. The Riding Club Horse Show gives cowboys and cowgirls a chance to show their stuff. On Sunday, check out the annual Show n’ Shine... and there is live music all weekend in the park. Monday starts out with a pancake breakfast at the Legion Hall and the Garden Festival. Just before noon the sidewalks fill with people, the marching band and bagpipers can be heard tuning up and the excitement builds in anticipation of the May Days parade. After it ends, everyone heads down to Vimy Park to watch children perform the May Pole Dance. A tradition that celebrates the arrival of spring; Kaslo children have danced around the May Pole since 1923. In the week of May Days you can download your May Day schedule of events off www.pennywiseads.com

Hike and Biking Trails
One of nicer features of living in Kaslo is the River Trail. Two beet-red covered bridges span the Kaslo River. You can cross both bridges and do the loop in about 45 minutes. The first bridge is at the south end of Fifth Street, a couple of blocks from the post office. The further bridge takes you high above the rushing blue-green water of the Kaslo River as it churns through a spectacular rocky gorge. More information about the river Trails visit the Kaslo Trailblazers website, kaslotrailblazers.org Wagon Road – A wide, relatively flat trail that goes from the top of Zwicky Road in Kaslo to Fish Lake. The area is steeped in history. Excellent for hiking and biking and horseback riding. ACCESS TRAIL – There are four access points for this trail: top of Wardner Street in Kaslo; off Hwy 31 north of Kaslo just before the brake check (well signed), and just past the brake check up Spur 7 forestry road to the 6th switch back - look for signs; and on the highway to New Denver at an intersection with the Wagon Road about 3 km west of Kaslo. This trail takes about 4 hours to do entirely. A great hiking trail, and a very challenging mountain bike trail.
Houseboating Kootenay Lake Explore the many faces of Kootenay Lake like never before – on a houseboat from Kaslo Shipyards. As captain and crew, you decide how busy or relaxing you want your holiday to be. Cruise the lake in comfort and style and discover your own private cove. Go to www.kasloshipyard.com for more information about their fleet and rates.
Meet Your Pals At The Sk8park Come down to the waterfront (opposite the ball park in Vimy Park) to see the most scenic skatepark anywhere and watch the skaters as they execute an ‘ollie,’ a ‘blunt slide’ or ‘kick flip.’ From bikes to skateboards, the kids ride them all at the Kaslo’s Sk8park.
Golf and Dine The spectacular location of the Kaslo Golf Course makes it a must see... if only for a meal and the view! The fun and challenging 9 hole course sits above Kaslo and Kootenay Lake and is accessed off Oak Ave at the South of town. Riding a motorcylce? Club rental is free!
Love Tennis The Kaslo Tennis courts are open May - October. For one day access or annual membership call 250-353-2431 or email kaslotennis@netidea.com
Information about these and other trails will gladly be provided by the Visitor Centre. Trail maps are also available at many locations throughout town for a small fee. Or visit the Kaslo website for more details http:// visitkaslo.com/recreation-events/hike-mountain-bike
Go Fishing It is not unusual to see Kaslo kids biking down to the lake, fishing rods arcing from their backpacks, or to see boats obviously equipped for Kootenay Lake fishing being towed into town. Many people come to Kaslo because of the fishing. You can get your fishing licence, tackle and lots of information (and fish tales) at Barren’s Sport Shop and Woodbury Resort.
