DCHHS receives resolution from Commissioners Court for National Accreditation

Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) received a resolution from Dallas County Commissioners Court for national accreditation.

The national accreditation program works to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing and ultimately transforming the quality and performance of the nation’s state, local, Tribal, and territorial public health departments. DCHHS is one of fewer than 200 health departments that have thus far achieved accreditation through PHAB since the organization launched in 2011.

“Dallas County Health and Human Services joins the growing ranks of accredited health departments in a strong commitment to their public health mission,” said PHAB President and CEO Kaye Bender, PhD, RN, FAAN. “The peer-review process provides valuable feedback to inform health departments of their strengths and areas for improvement, so that they can better protect and promote the health of the people they serve in their communities. Residents of a community served by a nationally accredited health department can be assured that their health department has demonstrated the capacity to protect and promote the health of that community.”

Award recognizes diverse group of women and their path to success and personal fulfillment

On December 11th, television viewers in the Dallas metroplex, Los Angeles, Miami and Atlanta enjoyed a beautifully executed awards program honoring Amy Poehler, the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor, writer and producer and veteran television producer, Meredith Walker with the Digital Media Award for “Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls” at the 8th Annual Women That Soar Awards at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas, Texas and airing on CBS. The Women That Soar Awards honors a diverse group of women from around the world for their personal and professional journeys to success.

This year’s star-studded event was hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier and featured comedian Heather McDonald, producer, writer and

casting director, Reuben Cannon, Grammy-nominated artist Wynonna Judd, R&B artist Leela James and multi-award winning R&B group En Vogue.

Women That Soar’s Founder and CEO Gina Grant, said, “I am delighted to honor Amy and Meredith along with other leading women from around the world.

I applaud all the women we’re honoring for the personal and professional accomplishments.”

Grant continued. “I love the way we’re bringing a diverse group of women together from around the world to celebrate, share and bond. This is a special time for women. We have our first female Presidential nominee. Women are overcoming obstacles and breaking down barriers. Women That Soar’s mission is to produce content and events

that empowers and inspires all women to soar and be their authentic selves.”

Past honorees include former First Lady of Mexico Marta Fox, Her Royal Highness Princess Reema Bandar of Saudi Arabia, actress Sherri Shephard, House of Deréon’s Tina Knowles, Sacramento Kings Assistant Coach Nancy Lieberman, former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and many others.

Along with honoring women who are game changers, Women That Soar has a mission to give $10,000 educational

scholarships to The Mnemosyne Institute to continue their efforts to build schools in deserving countries that have a need, but lack the funding and resources to provide education to young women. The company also supports “I Am Her Voice,” a non-profit organization that rescues women from sex trafficking.

“The PHAB accreditation is testament to the hard work of the DCHHS employees who work 24/7 to provide public health services to Dallas County residents.” said DCHHS Director Zachary Thompson. “Whenever you see our seal of accreditation, you will know that DCHHS has been rigorously examined and meets or exceeds national standards that promote continuous quality improvement for public health.”

Public health departments play a critical role in protecting and improving the health of people and communities.

The accreditation standards that PHAB have set define the expectations for all public health departments that seek to become accredited in the United States.

Holiday season is do-or-die for small retailers

Tis the season to be jolly, not broke.

Many small retailers earn 25 percent or more of total annual revenues during the Christmas Yolanda Garcia shopping season.

Stagnant holiday sales can be the beginning of a slow death-spiral in the coming year. Small locally-owned retailers don't typically have the sales volume and financial resources to compete with the huge discounts offered by big national chains.

Small retailers' profit margins tend to be thinner than the big players, giving them less wiggle room on discounts. The SBA compiled the following six hurdles small retailers face during the holiday shopping season, and ways to avoid them in the future.

1. Lack of inventory control. Inventory control is crucial for all small retailers, especially during the busy holiday selling months. It is important to remember that inventory equals profits, and knowing how much product to order, when to order it, and what items to order can be the difference between having cash in the bank or aging inventory on the shelves.

2.

Hiring the wrong employees for critical positions. There is a cost to hiring the wrong people for key positions. Small firms tend to have less layers of management between the owner and the employees, therefore new hires must be able to perform with less direct supervision and be motivated to get the job done right the first time. Avoid this issue by writing a detailed job description, and immediately instilling a sense of extreme customer service in each and every new employee.

Undercapitalization will kill the holiday spirit. Cash flow is the life blood of all small businesses. Cash flow allows a business to make payroll, pay suppliers, and keep its doors open. Business owners should immediately increase cash flow by collecting accounts receivables in a timely

manner; don’t keep cash tied up in unnecessary inventory; and eliminate unprofitable account relationships.

4. Not embracing online sales and social media. U.S. Census Bureau data shows that more than $1.2 billion in e-commerce sales were made during the first three quarters of 2016 – a 15.7 percent increase over the same period last year. By the end of 2017 it is estimated that more than 60 percent of all U.S. retail sales will involve the web. To stay competitive small retailer must develop a retail web presence. Also, leverage Twitter and Facebook to promote one-day sales or plug special product lines and high inventoried merchandise. Use Facebook advertising to establish more of an emotional connection with shoppers.

5. Not delaying the employee office party and social events. It is sales crunch time from Black Friday until New Year’s Day. Office parties can cause distractions at a time when a business needs to be especially productive. Too much food and drink can not only cause a nasty hangover, but sidetrack employee and management’s focus. Consider moving the company party until after New Year’s Day and call it the annual thank-you event. Tip: Involve the entire community in this thank you party.

6. Innovation and creativity lost. Historically, locally-owned small retailers beat their big box and online competitors by providing outstanding individualized customer service. Internet sales events have pushed large retailers into flooding the market with lost leader pricing on a wide array of holiday products. Small retailers must take the offensive by selling creative and innovative products that cannot be found at the local mega mall or online.

Create a unique customer experience that will draw shoppers to travel outside of their comfort zone, and discover that out-of-the-ordinary shopping district with ten trendy stores, not 100 traditional chain stores.

Donald, slumped over, elbows resting on his knees, looked like he needed a spiritual advisor when he sat beside President Obama after their historic White House meeting. It had to be a difficult and humbling moment for the Birther-brewing, hate-spewing Trump. Donald Trump looked mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted, like he had just been released from a powerful, frenzied, lustful dance with the not-so-holy ghost.

He looked dazed like a man who realized the gravity and severity of what he had just done. With all the deals he’s boasted about in The Art of the Deal, he had just made a deal with the devil that would cost him his eternal soul. You can’t beat the devil at his own game DT— remember, the house always wins!

There you have it! This is about our souls! Not just Donald’s, but everyone’s soul. That’s what Malachi was warning. We will all be held accountable for a crass, perverted, soulless nation where God has been pushed out, where God has been FIRED. We’ll all pay the price! Just watch!

The good news is, Malachi also speaks to healing and hope for those who honor Covenant and keep commandments. He speaks to the all-powerful love of God that will get us through these tumultuous times. Don’t run, don’t hide, don’t be afraid, stand up, represent, pray hard, love hard!

For those of you who are upset or offended by my comments and assertions and who most likely voted for Mr. Trump, please receive this little exercise for its entertainment value only— I’m no expert on these matters. Also, one day I may offer my thoughts on the Hillary Clinton campaign.

HALL: We Ain’t Scared! ry, you can testify that this one declaration; shared by Black folks in general, gave energy and inertia to Mac’s career…A career that forced America to not just allow, but invite a man of his rich ebony hue into their bedrooms.

Bernie Mac assailed our societal norms by making America accept him for who God made him.

As we say good riddance to 2016; easily the worst that many of us can recall for a number of reasons, I want to invoke the spirit of those six words that made Bernie a star and made his audience appreciate him.

2016 has been a rough year and not just because of Donald Trump.

Black folks now realize how expansive and pervasive racism, sexism, misogyny and homophobia are in this nation. Roughly half of Whites voted for the poster child for White male dominance.

Not to mention the misguided Black and Brown folks who sold us out.

I care little about that government subsidized, so-called billionaire with too much rouge and rancor.

Donald Trump is merely emblematic of millions of Americans who want to reclaim a supremacy they believe is a birthright during

a time when the rest of us were being violated.

Karma will eventually catch up to Trump. I worry about people who look like “Terrorists or thugs” and how they are being singled out.

As someone who studied Marcus Garvey and his Pan-African movement, I see some potential alliances forming. Trump in America, Brexit in England and Putin in Russia could be the stitch point in the fabric for a “Pan-European” quilt… A “reconstruction” of global White supremacy and colonialism of sorts.

Garvey and his followers simply wanted to end the global oppression of dark skinned peoples. Trump et al appear to want to unify White peoples all over the world while taking control of the economic, military and political systems at once. It may sound far-fetched, but totalitarianism and colonialism are in the worlds DNA. But the good news in this farewell is that multiculturalism lives in spirit and resolve, and we ain’t scared of these “Maryland Farmers.”

In fact, we will continue to demand that supremacy by race, gender or political power be confronted at every instance. It is our right as citizens of the world to live decently, peaceably, equally and with dignity.

Disaffected Rust Belt Republicans do not

represent all of the “Blue collar” workers who are rightly angered with the status quo.

The White Evangelical Christians whom author and social justice minister Jim Wallis calls “More White than Christian” are not the only Christians who feel compelled to bring God’s justice to bear. Not all gun enthusiasts revel in the political platform of the NRA. There are more than a few Democrats that believe in the 2nd Amendment.

We will not allow the Democratic Party to stand idly by while Trump’s newly-knighted captains of industry and infantry take over the world; one oil field at a time.

True populists and freedom fighters must become vigorous in their protests and unwavering in their commitment to justice and peace for all humankind and the ecosystems that support those lives.

We ain’t scared and we will fight for full and gainful employment, religious and identity freedom and first class citizenship for one and all.

Bernie Mac wasn’t scared and neither are we. In the words of Martin Luther King; “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.

JOHNSON: Importance of spreading Joy FROM THE HILL

The holiday season is a time of family, community, and celebration. Many of us look forward to this time of year because we have the opportunity to relax and celebrate with our loved ones. While I hope that everyone in the greater Dallas area enjoys a restful holiday season, I want to point out that this feeling is not afforded to everyone. In fact, it is a great privilege.

As a matter of fact, the holiday season can cause more stress than other times of the year.

For people who are struggling, the needs of their lives do not take a break in order for them to convene around a Christmas tree or enjoy

the tastes of a traditional holiday meal. Buying gifts and working to make ends meet during the holiday season can cause serious setbacks for a struggling family. Some families are forced to choose between having presents under the tree and having electricity for the month. This is a choice no one should ever have to make.

And there are many elderly individuals who are often forgotten during this time of the year.

However, everyone deserves joy in their holiday season.

Therefore, I want to highlight the incredible and thoughtful work of places like the Salvation Army. Undertaking a massive organizational task and being keenly aware of the difficult decisions some families must make, the Salvation Army collects, sorts, and distributes donated gifts to families in order to provide joy to those who otherwise might not be able to have it.

This organization’s graciousness allows families across the United States to not be burdened

by the cost of giving to their loved ones while trying to maintain the basic necessities in their homes, such as food, running water, heat and electricity.

Just this past weekend, my staff visited the Salvation Army location on Harry Hines Boulevard in Dallas. My staff works very hard to provide thorough solutions and resources that assist people of the 30th district, as well as propose and support legislation that is caring and thoughtful. Yet they were blown away by the dedication and compassion of the staff of the Salvation Army here in our great city. To them, there is still nothing better than a hands on experience that benefits the people. The staff of the Salvation Army is friendly, the music was festive, and they even did a mannequin challenge!

The holiday season is about family and Dallas is a great family. So this year, in the spirit of the fine people at the Salvation Army, I urge you to

help your greater Dallas family by volunteering for a cause. Dallas is a big city, and homelessness is pervasive and devastating our communities. As the temperatures drop, our city’s homeless shelters will see an increase. And the men and women who come into those shelters for warmth or a meal deserve a joyous holiday season. Dallas is home to many veterans, fine men and women who have sacrificed a lot to protect us. They may be having problems readjusting to life at home or procuring the healthcare they rightfully deserve. Some simple time spent with these people during the holidays will help them relax and take their mind off of the stress of everyday life for a moment. Whatever the cause may be, Dallas has family members in need, so check out VolunteerMatch.org to find opportunities to help your Dallas family.

The holidays are to be joyous so let us all help spread joy to others. Have a warm and restful holiday season, and a healthy new year.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King once said, “one of the shameful tragedies [of our nation] is that eleven o’clock on Sunday morning is one of the most segregated hours, if not the most segregated hour in Christian America.”

King referred to the segregation within American churches on Sunday mornings.

I would say that the most segregated place in America is the Democratic Party, especially when it comes to Blacks holding senior-level staff jobs.

According to The Gallup Organization, Blacks make up 22 percent of the Democratic Party and Hispanics 13 percent. For decades, Blacks have been the most loyal voting bloc within the Democratic Party, but as Obama has proven, when it’s time to reward that loyalty, Blacks are often forgotten.

The Joint Center for Economic and Political Studies did a fascinating study on this issue last year. The Joint Center used to be the premiere Black think tank in the U.S., until they decided to become a radical liberal group and tool of the Democratic National Committee.

The report is titled, “Racial Diversity Among Top Senate Staff,” conducted by James R. Jones. This is one of the most explosive, damning reports of the Democratic Party’s racism I have ever read. Some of the highlights of the report are: • Although people of color make up over 36 percent of the U.S. population and over 28 percent of the citizen voting-age population, they represent only 7.1 percent of top Senate staffers.

Of the 336 top Senate staffers, our analysis finds evidence of only 24 staffers of color (12 Asian-Americans, 7 Latinos, 3 African-Americans, and 2

Native-Americans). African-Americans make up 13 percent of the U.S. population, but only 0.9 percent of top Senate staffers and Latinos make up over 16 percent of the U.S. population, but only 2.1 percent of top Senate staffers.

• African-Americans represent from 17 to almost 38 percent of the population in ten states (Ala., Del., Ga., La., Md., Miss., N.C., S.C., Tenn., and Va.), yet hold only 1.7 percent of the total top staff positions in the U.S. Senate offices of these states (one position in S.C.).

• Top Democratic Senate staff members are much less diverse than the Democratic voting base. While those who self-identified as Democrats nationwide were 22 percent African-American and 13 percent Latino, top Democratic U.S. Senate staff as a group is 0.7 percent African-American and 2.0 percent Latino. There is no African-American chief of staff, legislative director, or communications director in the Washington, D.C. personal office of any Democratic Senator, according to the Joint Center’s 2015 study.

According to table 3 of this same report, “While people of color make up approximately 37 percent of those who identify as Democrats, they account for 8.1 percent of top Democratic Senate staff. In comparison, people of color make up 9 percent of those who identify as Republicans and 6.7 percent of top Republican Senate staff, the Republicans’ percentage of key staffers of color is closer to the share of their party’s voters who are people of color.”

In other words, a far left, radical Democrat-

ic group, The Joint Center, admits that the Republican Party has more diversity among their Senate staffers than their Democratic counterparts as a percentage of their makeup in their respective parties.

Why has the mainstream media not reported on this fact? They report on the fact the Democrats have little to no diversity on Senate staffs, but they never take the next step and say that the Republicans are doing a far better job than the Democrats, because to do so would undercut the liberals constant argument that Republicans are racist.

So, if the Republicans are racist, as Democrats constantly allege, what does that make the Democrats? One of their own radical liberal think tanks has now provided empirical data that shows Republicans are more diverse.

Isn’t it amazing that the only U.S. Senator

that has a Black chief of staff is South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, who is Black. New Jersey Senator, Corey Booker, the only other Black Senator, doesn’t think enough of his own community to hire a Black for this position, but yet he constantly lectures others about the lack of diversity.

How ironic!

So, to all my Black Democratic friends, why do you continue to work for a party that doesn’t reward your loyalty?

Dear Loyal Friend, What a great friend you are, and here’s how to be an even better one: Just listen and keep it to yourself. Evidently, that’s what you’ve been doing since your friend is comfortable enough to confide in you thus far. Cause we don’t and won’t to just anybody, I’m just sayin, you two must have history.

It’s hard to pull back the veil and reveal your heartbreak, your embarrassment or your dirty laundry. It’s one thing to put it in the dryer, but when you’re left with your business hanging on the clothesline, good googoolly moogoolly, you just want to run and hide.

To comfort means to “ease” to “relieve, cheer” and unless you’re the cheating, philandering, good for nothing… oh, wait I’m sorry, I digress.

Unless you’re the spouse, that isn’t your position or place to fill.

I know you mean well, but you, an outsider, can’t heal this kinda hurt for her. It is totally and wholeheartedly between her and her husband.

What works for or against one couple may not for another. It’s wrong, there’s no doubt about it and a legitimate reason for divorce. But that’s not always the answer one or both participants in the relationship are seeking.

When you’re on the receiving end of infidelity, you feel depleted, worthless and downright not “good” enough. Your confidence takes a leave of absence and you just can’t find it anywhere. Deciding to deal with the deceit and pretending it doesn’t bother you is foolish. It’s an internal war you cannot win. I hope she’s able to fuel her soul during this most difficult time. A trusted friend provides an advantage against the enemy, and that’s exactly what you are.

Without comment or judgement towards her, remain a shoulder soldier, strong and upright, ready for your friend to lean on.

Recently, I’ve had reason to refocus on that sometimes habitual thing that I do known as prayer.

Be it morning prayer, evening at church or, on behalf of a friend or seeking guidance in and out of a difficult situation, I have come to realize my prayer life could and should be much better.

I am reading an old fashioned good vs. evil novel, where the good is actually all about angels and the bad about demons.

Their battle is all about controlling us for the victory where their allegiances lay, ultimately God or Satan.

The revelation about my prayer life comes with an enlightenment of where our focus should be.

“For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the world rulers of this present darkness…” (Ephesians 6:12.) Now this is not a doom and gloom column making a statement about today’s politics. It is merely a commentary about the things I pray about.

I usually don’t pray about governments, world leaders, the coming of a new age and so forth. My prayer life tends to be a little more close to home and more about the people I love. To make my point, let me use the term “prayer cover.” In the book that I’m reading, the angels are constantly asking each other if can they win the next battle and the answer

is always not unless they get more prayer cover. They need more people praying in order to achieve victory.

And the specifics of the needed prayer revolve around folks calling upon the name of Jesus. You see everything changes, the tide gets turned, and the odds get stacked up against the pro-Christ gang.

Now, I know for a fact that many a friend, family member, church acquaintance and others have provided me with plenty of prayer cover.

I also know it was and has been my intent to provide cover for those closest to me. You just pray for people you love and all they are going

We hear the phrase “our thoughts and prayers go out to…” too many times these days for people caught up in nonsensical violence, terror, war and my favorite, man’s inhumanity to man.

And it doesn’t appear to be slowing down at all. Now back to my prayer point.

If I look at prayer as a weapon in the eternal life and death struggle, then I am arming myself and oth-

ers who are caught up in the eternal challenges of the day. I am providing cover.

It’s a military term. Scripture says it’s not always about flesh and blood, but things some of us don’t pay too much attention to.

Principalities, local, state, national and world leaders might need some prayer cover. Others just need prayer. The way I’m thinking now is that prayer just might be my daily weapon of choice.

It’s kind of a new perspective to think your prayers are ammunition for the work God wants done by you.

Prayer makes you stronger and the enemy weaker as a result.

The interesting thing about the book is that it forces you to look at the enemy in a different way. The enemy is doubt, fear, crimes against your person, complacency, fear of success, spiritual poverty, and apprehension about the world and its direction.

So, for me, tomorrow I’m arming myself for the battles of the day and the days after with a good dose of prayer and will happily share a few bullets for you.

The victory is ours and Jesus has already won this thing. He provided all the prayer cover we need. All He has ever asked you to do is take that knowledge with you and share it with the world.

National Endowment for the Arts awards DBDT 2017 Challenge America Grant - National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $30 million in grants as part of the NEA's first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017.

Included in this announce ment is a Challenge America grant to Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT) so it can feature guest artists from Ballet Austin during its Spring Celebration series during May 2017.

The Challenge America category supports primarily small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations-those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics or disability.

The Spring Celebration Series May 19-21, 2017 marks the close of Dallas Black Dance Theatre's 40th Anniversary season.

The series features guest artists from Ballet Austin performing a work by their Artistic Director Stephen Mills. In addition, DBDT dancers will perform a contemporary work by Mr. Mills.

Directly following the Friday evening performance DBDT will hold an artists' discussion, featuring dancers from both companies and the choreographer where audience members can ask the guest artists questions about the artistic process.

"The arts are for all of us, and by supporting organizations

such as Dallas Black Dance Theatre, the National Endowment for the Arts is providing more opportunities for the public to engage with the arts," said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. "Whether

in a theater, a town square, a museum, or a hospital, the arts are everywhere and make our lives richer."

"The NEA has two criteria for awarding grants, excellence and merit," explained Jane Chu when she visited DBDT on November 28, 2016 as part of a tour of the Dallas Arts District.

"We decide the grant amount on the project, not the size of the organization." The NEA has given grants to Dallas Black Dance Theatre for more than 30 years. In FY 2016, Dallas Black Dance Theatre was the only modern dance company in Texas to receive an NEA grant.

"Dallas Black Dance Theatre is honored to receive this award to support guest artists' performances and engagement with community audiences," said Zenetta Drew, executive director of Dallas Black Dance Theatre.

During its 40-year history, Dallas Black Dance Theatre has performed on five continents, in 15

countries and 31 states, including two Olympic Cultural events.

Over the years, more than 4 million arts patrons and 2.6 million students, grades K-12, have experienced the dance company's performances and educational outreach programs.

DBDT serves more than 100,000 p e o p l e annually, including more than 2 0 , 0 0 0 youth in g r a d e s K-12 in Dallas-Fort Worth area schools. DBDT offers community outreach services through workshops, lecture/ demonstrations, master-classes, residences, mini-performances and student matinees that are designed level-specific for elementary, middle, high school and university students.

Another 40,000 youth and adults are reached through local, national and international festivals, tours, special performances at universities, social service agencies, professional and corporate organizations, civic events and community venues.

Ten Million raised for Fallen Officers

The officers and families affected by the July 7, 2016 downtown Dallas attack are the beneficiaries of about $10 million that has been raised on their behalf.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, along with representatives from the Assist the Officer Foundation and The Dallas Foundation made the announcement at a news conference at Dallas City Hall.

Assist the Officer Foundation and The Dallas Foundation have worked to identify the most effective way to distribute the funds that were raised and entrusted to the two organizations.

Trusts that will provide for family member’s health, education and other support have been created for the families of Dallas Police Department Sergeant Michael Smith, Senior Corporal Lorne Ahrens, Officer Michael Krol and Officer Patricio Zamarripa and Dallas Area Rapid Transit Officer Brent Thompson.

Mayor Rawlings said the city “owes a tremendous amount of gratitude to the officers who lost or risked their lives to keep us safe. Out of one of the darkest days in our city’s history, we have seen an incredible outpouring of love and support from organizations and individuals all over the world.

“We are so honored by the amount of people who have stepped forward to properly assist our fallen and injured officers.”

More than 6,000 contributions were received from across the country, with all 50 states represented. Gifts were also received from Australia, the United Kingdom and Italy. Donations ranged from $5 to more than $250,000. Funds were equitably divided among the families of the fallen officers. In addition to the trusts, part of the donations will be directed to support the officers injured on that fateful day.

“The Assist the Officer Foundation is very grateful for the generous support shown for our police officers and their families,” said Frederick Frazier, chairman of the Assist the Officer Foundation. “It’s a powerful gesture that symbolizes the appreciation for every officer’s dedication to service and commitment to the safety of every citizen.”

“The joint effort to honor our fallen officers and their families has been remarkable,” said Mary Jalonick, president and CEO of The Dallas Foundation. “The philanthropic community in Dallas has worked closely with the Dallas Police Department and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit agency to ensure that 100 percent of donations received will be distributed to the officers and families affected by the tragic events of July 7, 2016.”

Dallas Maverick star Dirk Nowitzki was recently honored with the first Derek Harper Media Assist Award for his consistent availability to the media and cooperation during the 2015-16 season.

Every season, local chapters of the Professional Basketball Writers’ Association honor a player on their team who exhibits professionalism and an uncommon willingness to devote time when dealing with members of the media.

The award was presented during halftime of the Mavericks vs. Indiana Pacers game Friday night at American Airlines Center.

Presenting Dirk the award were cochairs of the Professional Basketball Writers Association, Dwain Price of

the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Eddie Sefko of The Dallas Morning News.

“Nowitzki truly is a blessing not only for fans on the court, but for media members in the interview room,” said Price.

The award is named after former Maverick and NBA star Derek Harper, who was one of the most media-friendly players in Mavericks’ history. Harper is currently a game analyst for the Mavericks on their locally broadcast games.

Nowitzki has been the face of the Dallas Mavericks franchise where he has played his entire 19-year-career.

He is considered one of the greatest power forwards in basketball history and led the Mavericks to the franchise’s first Finals appearance in 2006 and only Championship in 2011.
