TEXAS METRO NEWS MY TRUTH

by Cheryl Smith, Publisher

Say “NO” to the bully As a journalist, I know and I have told so many students over the years, “you don’t want to ask ‘that question.’” For me a “stupid question” is that ill-prepared question: meaning your facts were wrong and you

hadn’t done your research. On occasion I have had the opportunity to ask a question of both of the Clintons, and then-Senator Barack Obama. In a crowded room, with thousands of journalists each time, I came prepared with the well-researched and rehearsed question. I also had the knowledge, which was affirmed by two of my journalism/life mentors, the late George Curry and Dr. Julianne Malveaux, that whatever question I asked, there would be those in the room who felt they had a better question or that my question was not good enough. Battle for Florida and Georgia could end in recount By Stacy M. Brown

NNPA Newswire Correspondent

@StacyBrownMedia

The heartache expressed on Tuesday night by the many supporters of Stacey Abrams has suddenly turned to hope after absentee and other ballots counted brought the Georgia Democratic governor hopeful closer to a runoff with Republican Brian Kemp. And, after conceding to Republican Ron DeSantis in Florida on Election night, Tallahassee Mayor and Florida Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum

found new life when votes were finally tabulated from the more blue areas of the state like Broward and Miami Dade. Gillum said he conceded based on “the limited information we had.” That’s now changed. What a Democratic House Must Do! From the Capitol By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

In the next Congress that convenes in January it is my intention to seek the chairmanship of the Committee on Science, Space and Technology, a panel on which I now sit as its ranking member. Known as the ‘committee of the future,’ the Science Committee is crucial to a number of issues that affect our nation, chief among them is insuring that our country remains the world’s principal scientific innovator,

that we continue to promote prudent and effective STEM education solutions and that we respect and consider our country’s esteemed scientific communities. In the last decade, if not longer, the overwhelming majority of America’s highly regarded scientists have warned the executive branch and the Congress about the dangers that we face as a nation if we do not address the issue of a changing climate. The Republican majority in the House has ignored the opinions of these scientists while our climate has worsened, with unthinkable weather events, including raging fires, coastal erosion and deadly hurricanes. Over the years I have read and studied the research presented by distinguished members of our science communities in North Texas and

The Congress and the executive branch must begin to listen to these men and women who have devoted their lives to academia, and who have pleaded with us to take action before it is too late. We must begin to work with them to confront the daunting challenges that we face. I am willing and able to work with members of the Democratic Majority in the House and our Republican colleagues to create sensible legislation and policies that will address the issue of fossil fuels that experts say is contributing to a warming climate. It is neither a Democratic issue nor a Republican issue. It is an American issue. We cannot afford to be silent in the face of a United Nations science report which recently concluded that placing a price on carbon dioxide

emissions, a leading cause of adverse changes in the world’s climate, was crucial to curbing the impact that a warming climate has on communities, countries, agriculture and people. The report stated that the number of poor people in the world will increase because of increased food shortages, that there will be more wildfires like those in California, additional storms like those that devastated South Texas and that we will witness the death of the world’s coral reefs within the next twenty-five years if business leaders and governments do not move quickly to address climate change. If you’re harboring unforgiveness in your heart, know that it is not worth blocking your blessings By Donald Lee Friends, I’d like to share a nugget of wisdom on what happens when we choose not Donald Lee to forgive those who transgress against us. Unforgiveness, which is a sin, hidden in one’s heart will stop a prayer from reaching God the Father’s ear. So, if there’s someone in your life that you haven’t yet forgiven for any wrong that person may have done to you, choose to forgive him (or her). “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe ye receive them, and ye shall have them. “And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses,” our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ says in Mark 11:24-26. The next time someone offends you, ask yourself, “Is this person worth the forfeiture of my blessings from God? Do I dislike them so much to where I don’t mind walking around indefinitely with a dark cloud over my head?” If you’re smart, the answer to both questions should be a resounding “no.”

3

You’ve got to understand that forgiving someone who may have done wrong by you doesn’t mean you have to hang with him (or her). You’re commanded to forgive, not be foolish. Oftentimes, people think just because the Word requires us to operate in forgiveness that equates to having to be buddy-buddy with the other person. Depending on the offense, it’s best to keep your distance. But harboring malice or ill will in your spirit is a self-contaminant. So, decide that walking in unforgiveness is not worth forfeiting your blessings over. For the blessings of God are conditional, not automatic. Walking in forgiveness is one of those conditions that must be met. Donald Lee, founder-pastor of Kingdom Living Christian Center in the Dallas area, is co-author of “Married to Commitment,” a Xulon Press-published book centering on healthy relationships. Quit Playin’ By Vincent L. Houston and the surrounding suburbs have been dyed in the red wool of Republican control for years, but Beto buried it in indigo.

something revolutionary was afoot. The Philadelphia Tribune released a front-page story entitled the “Beto Effect. The article left no ambiguity about the benefits of Beto’s barnstorming and his battle-worthiness. “Many other races were impacted across Texas as a trickle-down effect of O’Rourke’s campaign. O’Rourke truly solidified himself as a political powerhouse who was able to raise tons of money and electrify a nation with his progressive ideology and charming charisma. This is Texas, however, which has been Republican-dominated since 2002, when Republicans took control of the Texas House of Representatives, breaking a 130-year string of Democratic dominance in the state.

Every single Democrat who picked up a new seat in Texas, especially one that had been under Republican control, should personally pick up the phone and say “Thank you to Beto O’Rourke for creating a “blue wave that has given them the opportunity to serve and make a difference for their constituents and the community at large. Don’t get this twisted and don’t let anyone tell you anything else. The cold blue winds that left the GOP with a 24-month case of the chills were compliments of a gulf stream that flew into Texas from the border at El Paso. President Barack Hussein Obama was accurate in his widely accepted colloquialism that “elections have consequences. Beto proved to be the kind of real-issue politician that made going to the polls easy if not fashionable. When local political hucksters began to see Beto signs in generally ultra-conservative enclaves; it became evident that

Harris County is glistening and glowing with glee, but Dallas County boasts as many as 20 sisters on the

bench, civil, criminal and probate. Although they lack the kind of campaign resources that Democrats have usually enjoyed in Dallas, they became instant beneficiaries of Beto’s national benevolence. Beto’s candidacy bridged the overly advertised divide between mainstreamed, old-schooled, Centrist Democrats and the burgeoning radicals we call Progressives. He was calm enough to comfort the old guard and calamitous enough to cajole the newest converts. The network talking heads often prosecute the Democratic Party for not having a universal message, but Beto proved that all politics is local and that the cookie-cutter and comprehensive prescriptive will not fit. What Beto accomplished without advertising it, was the ability to imbue hope and manufacture imagination among voters. He was masterful in rerouting the daily travesties of Donald Trump by answering pessimism with

optimism. He dealt with Agent Orange and his toxicity with tenacity and temperance. O’Rourke was named either purposely or providentially for Robert Francis Kennedy, which is a tribute to one of the most hopeful periods in American history. He was pictured as a young teen with the legendary Jesse Louis Jackson, encouraging Beto to “Push for Excellence. Beto regenerated the love and largesse of other influential political leaders and become one himself. His impact will last a few generations. Texas Democrats owe Beto everything and so do Democrats across the nation. His role seems sacrificial today, but you get the feeling that he’ll reap the benefits of this historic run in 2020. Unhinged Attacks are Repulsive

The Last Word By Dr. Julianne Malveaux

A cursory look at the win-loss column after last week’s mid-term elections suggests that nobody left the table empty-handed. Democrats gained control of the House of Representatives, Republican’s expanded their control of the Senate, hundreds of state legislative seats flipped from Democratic to Republican, and Democrats gained gubernatorial, Attorney General, and other key positions. But both democracy and the truth took a hit during the midterms, when the President of the United States obfuscated, prevaricated, and just plain lied every chance he got. And then he had the nerve to say he tells the truth “when he can,” which really means he tells the truth only when it serves him. During the midterm campaign, 45 notably attacked Democratic opponents any way he could, often with the vilest of lies. African American political candidates, and especially Stacey Abrams (Georgia) and Andrew Gillum (Florida) were the focus of his ire.

While 45 counts the midterm election as a victory, he was so testily obnoxious in the press conference the day after the election that it is clear that he felt the loss. And when a bully is beaten, he lashes out. CNN’s Jim Acosta was the victim of his ire. Because he was persistent in asking a question, he was falsely accused of putting his hands on someone, and his White House press pass was revoked. At the same press conference, the so-called leader of the free world was rudely dismissive to American Urban Radio’s star reporter, April Ryan, repeatedly telling her to “sit down.” Then, on November 9, he attacked Ryan, calling her a “loser” and saying that she “doesn’t know what the hell she is doing.” He said he might consider yanking her press credentials. The president is on a roll when it comes to Black women in the press. He told CNN’s Abby Phillips that she “always asks stupid questions” when she asked him whether he elevated Matt Whitaker to acting Attorney General because he will impede the Mueller investigation. Stupid is the perfect way to describe a president who does not even know how to use Google search to figure out that his pick to replace Jeff Sessions is biased against an investigation he is now charged with supervising. Phillips, a

consummate and smooth professional, surely understands that she is in good company. Trump loves to attack Black women, especially those who oppose him (like Maxine Waters) for their intellectual acuity. At the same press conference where he melted down on Jim Acosta, the president also attacked PBS White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor, describing a question she asked him about the term “nationalist” as a “racist question.” Alcindor, who says she has interviewed several white supremacists that are “excited” by their leader, asked a perfectly legitimate question of the president who has been stoking racial fires since he announced his candidacy. In attacking both the questioner and the question, 45 again showed his biases and his hostility both to the press and to some of the individuals who cover him. No president enjoys intense press scrutiny, especially when things are not going his way. But no president has been more rude, dismissive and offensive toward the press. No press secretary has been more rude and obnoxious than Sarah Huckabee Sanders. And none has attempted to curtail press freedoms with the vitriol that Trump has. Mr. Trump says he will pull the press credential of any member of the press who is not “respectful” to

5

CNN’s Jim Acosta was the victim of Trump’s ire. Because he was persistent in asking a question, he was falsely accused of putting his hands on someone, and his White House press pass was revoked.

him. In his tiny mind, disrespect is the same as merely asking difficult or uncomfortable questions. He and Sanders would undoubtedly feel better if there were no press questions, just syncopated fawning. I don’t expect decency from the president, but I am concerned that the press corps has not been more strongly supportive of their colleagues like April Ryan and Jim Acosta. What if, for just one day, every member of the press began her question with, I’m asking this in the name of Jim Acosta? What if they started a question with, “Let me say that my colleague April Ryan is not a loser,” this administra-

tion would get some sense of press solidarity. Trump attacks because he can attack and because few are willing to stand up to him. The President’s hostility toward the press is bad enough. His particular antipathy toward African Americans is even worse. Who will stand up for April Ryan, Abby Phillips, and Yamiche Alcindor? Where, by the way, are the women of the #MeToo movement when Black women are being attacked? Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. Her latest book “Are We Better Off? NABJ appalled by Trump's disrespect of African American women

President Donald Trump rejected National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) member and CNN White House reporter Abby Phillip's question as "stupid" on national television. Phillip asked the President if he wanted acting U.S. Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to "rein in Mueller," referring to Robert Mueller the special counsel investigating possible Russian influence in the 2016 election. Whitaker has been critical of the Mueller investigation. NABJ members and other journalists have taken to social media

expressing their frustration with the president's continuous attacks. "The most powerful man in the free world is verbally abusing journalists," said NABJ President Sarah Glover. "The past two years have been filled with assaults on the media and Donald Trump's comments this week have reached an all-time low with attacks on three black female journalists. “His dismissive comments toward journalists April Ryan, Abby Phillip and Yamiche Alcindor are appalling, irresponsible, and should be denounced."

Sarah Glover NABJ President

Trump responded to Phillip, a former Washington Post reporter and Harvard graduate, "What a stupid question. What a stupid question that is. But I watch you a lot. You ask a lot of stupid questions." The president also used demeaning and insulting language about American Urban Radio Network's April Ryan calling her "nasty" and a "loser." He was also dismissive of Ryan telling her to "sit down" several times during Wednesday's news conference at the White House. During that same news conference

President Trump was also dismissive of Yamiche Alcindor of PBS Newshour. She asked if the president's rhetoric was encouraging white nationalists. The president responded, "That is such a racist question." The NABJ is calling on the president to stop his verbal assault on black women journalists and all journalists, and to provide truthful answers instead of insults. An advocacy group established in 1975 in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization for journalists of color in the nation, and provides career development as well as educational and other support to its members worldwide.

What if Black professional athletes respected Black economic empowerment? BEYOND THE RHETORIC By Harry C. Alford & Kay DeBow

Mr. Alford is the Co-Founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. Ms. DeBow is the Co-Founder, Executive Vice President of the NBCC. Website: www.nationalbcc.org Email: halford@nationalbcc.org kdebow@nationalbcc.org

Oh, what a wonderful world this would be for Black communities throughout our nation. We, as a people, have over $1.3 trillion (T) in annual spending. However, our Blackowned businesses account for over $183 billion. Do you see the problem? We don’t recycle our money within our own communities. Not even 20 percent of what we have stays within our own business infrastructure. As Malcolm X once remarked, “The ‘eagle’ flies on Friday in Black communities and by noon Saturday it is one dead bird.” Nothing recycles and thus, nothing is going to build or grow larger. We are consumer slaves.

We live in a complex on the Virginia side of Washington, DC. A few of our neighbors are professional athletes. You can always tell when their crew is assembling. The parking area out front suddenly looks like a Maybach or Lamborghini car dealership. There is a million dollars’ worth of depreciating assets right before our eyes. They think it is so cool. We think it is depressing. I guess it is their money and their business. However, if we look collectively there is an immense opportunity slipping right before our eyes. The Black percentage of professional football players exceeds 70%. The National Basketball Association approaches

90% +. These gifted athletes control billions of dollars that could be directed to significant economic empowerment for the Black communities from which they come. Allow us to show you a few examples of what could be done. Basketball arenas and football stadiums are being built around our nation on an ongoing basis. Right now, there is usually no Black participation included during the construction and design of these stadiums. Levi Stadium in California had only 1.4% participation. Imagine if the Players’ Associations for these two sports would put this on the negotiating table before the owners: Thirty percent of all construction performed on the next stadiums be done by Blackowned and -managed construction firms. That should include architecture and engineering followed by construction management and all prime and subcontracting, accounting, all legal services. The stadiums should be built in areas

that will not gentrify Black neighborhoods and business communities. Thirty percent of all concessions, restaurants, etc. that are allowed within the stadiums and arenas must be Black owned. Black advertising and public relations firms should be included. Levi Stadium brings up another matter. The NFL and NBA player associations seem to have a great affinity to construction unions. They assume that they are fair and equitable to Black labor. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Only 2% of Black-owned construction companies are union. Why? Because of the Jim Crow treatment by these construction unions. The time is overdue for these Black athletes to step up and do the only responsible thing they can do. Don’t tolerate racist construction unions. Hell no! to solidarity. Additionally, where are these teams parking their money? Financial institutions and money management firms should have significant Black utilization. Significant should

equate to over 30%. No more scandals such as Merrill Lynch bilking NBA players with the encouragement of their upper management (a Black CEO). The athletes must participate in the selection of the Super Bowl city. There should be a rating system which determines the likelihood of racially diverse people participating in the wealth that a Super Bowl brings. Which city will have the blackest vendors? Who is printing the jerseys, the T-shirts, the souvenir books? Who is advertising the Super Bowl? And may we suggest that teams look for Black owned hotels. These team owners are asleep at the wheel of diversity and inclusivity. They must feel pressured to have desire for diversity. The pressure will come from the athletes. Just because these teams have been using select vendors for dozens of decades doesn’t mean they can’t change now. The sooner they do it the better off America will be. The player associations

should have formal Memorandums of Understanding with the top Black professional organizations such as Black architecture and engineering associations, Black contractors, banks, accounting associations, attorneys, realtors, etc. This God-given natural athletic ability that is blessed on our people must be used via wide distribution of its influence and effects. These MOU’s should be publicized with ongoing updates to ensure that it is not just “window dressing” but real deal economic empowerment. Now this would change the world! After doing that correctly we could move to our entertainers who would only perform at venues that have documented proof of Black construction, architecture/engineering participation. Again, God has blessed us with remarkable talent. Let’s leverage it. Oh, how badly we need a bigger share of that $1.3 trillion. We can’t think of a better way. Our destiny is in our own hands.

Battle for Florida and Georgia, continued from front page cluding a state-mandated recount,” Cervone said. “Mayor Gillum started his campaign for the people, and we are committed to ensuring every single vote in Florida is counted.” Meanwhile, after initial and unofficial tallies in Georgia gave Kemp a seemingly insurmountable lead, absentee and other provisional ballots drew Abrams ever closer and also in the range of recount and possibly a runoff. “All of the votes in this race have not been counted,” Abrams campaign manager

Lauren Groh-Wargo said at a press conference on Thursday. Under Georgia law, if no candidate achieves a majority, then a runoff election will be held. Kemp currently leads with 50.3 percent of the vote. Abrams is also close to the possible threshold to earn a recount in the race, which, following his resignation, Kemp would now not oversee. “Brian Kemp is 25,622 votes above the threshold for a runoff election. Twenty-five thousand votes of nearly four million cast are at issue in this race,”

Groh-Wargo said. “By [Kemp’s] own admission, there are at least 25,000 outstanding votes, and hundreds if not thousands of more that we are learning about and discovering every day.” The state chapter of the NAACP filed a pair of lawsuits claiming that students at Spelman College and Morehouse College were improperly forced to vote with a provisional ballot – or dissuaded from voting at all – because their names didn’t show up on voter registration lists. And the second, according to the Atlanta Journal Consti-

tution, seeks to preserve the right for voters in the Pittman Park Recreation Center area to cast ballots. That was the precinct where massive lines formed because of too few polling machines. Even after five additional voting devices were delivered, some people waited four hours at the Atlanta site. In a televised interview early Tuesday, former talk show host Melissa Harris-Perry said Gillum and Stacey would change the way Democrats campaign in the south for decades to come.

In saying so, Harris-Perry was clear that would be the case regardless of the outcome. “Gillum and Abrams, no matter what, they have changed the idea that Democrats should not be fighting for these seats in the south, and that’s going to have 25 years of impact,” Harris-Perry said. Much had been written about Abrams’ opponent interfering with voting rights and early reports from Georgia indicated that many polling locations were not up and running in a timely fashion.

Voters in the Peach state dealt with long lines, malfunctioning election equipment and registration discrepancies as they swamped precincts Tuesday with an unprecedented turnout for a midterm election. Wait times of more than an hour were the most common hurdle facing voters across the state, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported. But technical problems, like failing to plug in voting machines, worsened matters for some voters trying to get their ballots in.

The Grinch

Movie Studios I l l u m i n at i o n and Universal Pictures team up to do their magic from films like DESPICABLE ME and MINIONS on The Dr. Seuss classic, THE GRINCH. English actor Benedict Cumberbatch, an Academy Award-nominated actor, is outstanding as the voice of The Grinch. The movie, while keeping the same basic premise of the Christmas hating, cave-dwelling Grinch, has a few new twists; such as Rashida Jones playing single mom Donna Who, and Keenan Thompson who plays Mr. Bricklebaum, the biggest lover of Christmas in the Christmas loving town of Whoville. He also tries to become friends with The Grinch.

Of course, The Grinch is consistent. He still hates Christmas and makes plans to spoil the Christmas celebration for the people of Whoville. Along with his faithful dog, Max, they devise a scheme to pose as Santa Claus and drop into town on Christmas eve to ruin the Christmas holiday for the entire town.

ror of his ways and ends up including him to celebrate at her home, even after The Grinch tried to steal Christmas. The Illumination animators make for a stunning film. The colors, the Christmas lights, and the snowy backgrounds are a marvelous sight to see. Just watching the movie made me want to cuddle up in a blanket. It felt so real.

But it's a little girl, Cindy-Lou Who (Cameron Seely) who shows the Grinch the er-

THE GRINCH is the perfect runtime right at 90 minutes (it will easily keep small kids engaged for the entire movie) and is rated PG. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate THE GRINCH a JUMBO!

All up in your daddy’s business! Ask Alma

Dear Alma, My 59-year-old father may have conceived a child with his 28-year-old girlfriend. I say “may” because his girlfriend sleeps around, and everybody in town knows it. My father is raising this child as his own. He asked my siblings and me to accept this baby and his girlfriend in our lives. He wants them invited to family parties, holidays, birthdays, cookouts, etc. I believe that before we welcome this conniving duo into our family, he needs to take a DNA test. How do I suggest this without getting him mad at my sister and me? My brother says it’s not our business. Signed, My Father, Not My Business Dear My Father, Okay, pull up a seat. We need to have a semi-confidential conversation. I’ve read your e-mail, perused and pondered it and I’ve got to say, I remain planted at the same conclusion. I understand

This ain’t your red wagon to pull. I know that’s your daddy and I get the feeling you guys have a close relationship, which is fantastic and more than likely the reason why you’re so upset with the big, white 28-year-old elephant in the room. Yes, I agree, she’s too young for your daddy and yes, I agree, he’s too old to have a baby, but you know what – it is what it is and neither one of them is required to ask for your permission.

Frankly, this is not your state of affairs; you have no control here. Why in the world are you trying to make decisions for a 60-yearold man? Whether he’s living long or living wrong, 60 years is enough time for him to follow his own map of directions. Your father can and will decide with whom he wants to share his life. Here’s a news flash: he was making decisions about women and finding his way before you were born, LOL. Stay in your lane, sweetie. He’s a grown man handling his business. Your daddy has enough love for all his children. This new baby is not taking your place. For the last time, Missy, mind your business. Truth be told, we all have enough drama going on in our own backyards to keep us busy. Focus on the weeds in your own garden and let your father tend to his. Seems to me, what looks like an overcast cloud to you is bringing much joy and sunshine to your father. Motivate yourself on being a great big sister. Now wouldn’t that be the most decent move you could make out of this madness? Alma

Ray Spalding is not your typical NBA rookie

Fast Break with

Dorothy J Gentry Sports Editor The 21-year-old (he will turn 22 in March) is older than most NBA rookies who are often still in their teens when they enter the League. He spent three years at Louisville before entering the 2018 NBA Draft. There he was picked in the second round at #56 by the Dallas Mavericks. He played in five games (4 starts) for the Mavs at the MGM Resorts Summer League Games in Las Vegas and averaged 8.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.0 steal in 17.0 minutes and shot 58.6% (17-29 FGs) from the field. Then the 6’10 forward surprised most NBA followers by snagging a four-year contract with the Mavs with the first year guaranteed, and he has gained the praise and backing of Head Coach Rick Carlisle and Mavs Owner Mark Cuban. “He’s a good young player. He’s very well-coached from a great program in Louisville,” Coach Carlisle said. “He’s a prototypical five man in the NBA today. He’s got length. He can rim run for dunks; he can roll and be a lob target. “His shooting is better than you think. And he has very good defensive habits and defensive instincts. We like him,” Carlisle said when asked what impressed the team about Spalding. Cuban said many of the rookies on the Mavs squad this year, including Spalding, “really have a chance to contribute and have a place in this League

for a long time.” TMN spent some time with Spalding during Mavs Media Day, training camp and practice to find out what makes the traditional big man tick, how did he transition to the NBA, what’s on his playlist and more. TMN: How are you approaching your first NBA season? Spalding: “I plan to work hard as always. I’m glad the coaches saw that in me, that I’m a hard worker. I’m prepared to show everyone what I am capable of doing and how I can contribute as a teammate and do what I need to do. I will be a role player these first few years and just be a good guy. . Justbe a good guy. TMN: How did you prepare for the transition from college to the NBA? Spalding: I worked a lot on my mind, mentally preparing himself for the process. I got my body together, put on a little more weight. I really worked on my ball handling, my shooting my passing, just

my IQ of the game. I was a pretty good college basketball player. I did a little bit of everything for my team. I passed the ball, I rebounded, switched out on ball screens, guarded guards, guarded guys bigger than me. I’m not the biggest or strongest guys but I’ve got a little fight in me. So that will help me out a lot. Transferring over to the NBA I know I needed to get stronger. TMN: Did you always want to play in the NBA? Did you finish college? Spalding: My dreams were al-

little bit of everything: Moneyman, Mac Miller, J Cole (always), Meek Mill, my boy from back home he’s a rapper ESTG, Big G, I listen to him a lot. TMN: Favorite movie? Spalding: Paid in Full TMN: Favorite basketball player Spalding: Tracy McGrady TMN: If you didn’t play basketball, what sport would you excel in? Spalding: I grew up in Louisville. Everyone is supportive and loves me there. It is great to have that fan base behind you. My mom, dad, and grandmother play a huge role

Spalding: I never really expanded out to other sports. I’ve always played basketball. If I had to pick one, it would be baseball. I watch a little bit.

TMN: Chocolate or vanilla? Hamburgers or hot dogs? Spalding: Vanilla and hot dogs; great chili dogs back home TMN: Are you a Dallas Cowboys fan? Spalding: Now yet but I’m but slowly evolving into one. Keep your eye on Ray Spalding this season. Whether he’s on the court at the American Airlines Center as part of the Mavs rotation, or in Frisco continuing his NBA development as a member of the G-League Texas Legends, Spalding will be fun and exciting to watch as he makes his mark in the Association. MY TRUTH,

continued from front page

Like Marcus Garvey said, “Every man has a right to his own opinion.” So, while my question may not have been “the question” for every other journalist, no one could not say that I hadn’t done my homework. I’ve never been shot down at a press conference or during any interviews; however I have seen a reporter taken to task, like the time actor Samuel L. Jackson shut down a young man. Reporter: You said that rappers shouldn’t be actors and… Mr. Jackson (cutting the reporter off): That is not what I said. What I did say was… I breathed a sigh of relief. I could think of ways the question could have been framed better and I hope the young man learned from the experience. Mr. Jackson was neither degrading or verbally abusive, though. Which brings me to my truth. I was, am, and will probably always be mortified when I recall the way three women were treated by the man who is viewed as the most powerful person in the free world. Even the most seasoned veteran has experienced or can recall that point in their career when they faced an un-

pleasant situation, or got chided during a press conference; but nothing to the degree to which April Ryan, Abby Phillip and Yamiche Alcindor were bullied, berated and actually ridiculed by President Donald Trump. I don’t care what journalism school you attend, I don’t think it could prepare you for the tongue lashings these women received, at least not from the President of these United States. Now, sure we were taught about going into opposing arenas; like having to cover white supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, or similarly hostile environments; but not the White House! But there might be those who say the situation is the same with Trump! I’ve even been in discussions with journalists, who felt as I did, that an ill-prepared journalist was embarrassed for not having their facts together so they asked a “stupid” question. But never were they berated to the degree we have witnessed recently. This president has an issue with Black women especially. Several words have used been when referring to Black women: dog, stupid, nasty, loser… This man, raising his voice at a grown woman, ordered her to sit down! Then in the same breath he wants to talk about being respectful, how everyone should respect the office of the presi-

dency. I agree we should respect the office. We must respect ourselves enough to, as our First Lady Michelle Obama said, “when they go low, we go high.” April, Abby and Yamiche continue to take the high road, in spite of the abuse they have suffered. These are WOMEN: daughters, mothers, wives, sisters, QUEENS! Yes, Trump’s behavior is the kind you think of when talking about the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). A big thanks to Vice President Joe Biden who as a Senator in 1994 drafted VAWA after what was called the “Anita Hill Hearings” but should have been called the “Clarence Thomas Hearings,” and Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee (D-TX) for sponsoring the VAWA Reauthorization Act. If you are defining emotional abuse, you can’t help but describe the president’s behavior. According to an article republished in domesticviolenceinfo. ca, emotional abuse includes verbal abuse such as yelling, name-calling, blaming, and shaming. Sadly, I think that when the president goes low, many Republicans, and many Democrats, as well as numerous others don’t go high, they probably go somewhere and get high! What else could explain their behavior or lack thereof? Why are they silent?

TEXAS METRO NEWS I know, some would say that white women, who are noticeably silent, suffer from the after effects of slavery also. They see their husbands doing wrong and in their passive aggressive way, they turn their heads and may even do a little talking, but when it’s time to lynch, sell, or rape; they say nothing because they are standing with their man! Now we don’t expect Melania Trump to speak out about her husband. In her subtle way; however, maybe she is. She talks about cyber-bullying while her man is the poster child. Possibly she is telling us to read between the lines. Many have solutions for dealing with bullying. I think if I had been in the room or on the lawn when the abuses occurred, I would have come behind my colleague with the very same question because each time the questions were valid. Let’s show some support to these journalists, and others like Jim

Acosta. There’s been some support but not nearly enough. The National Association of Black Journalists was quick with its rebuke of the President, and so were others. But more should come. You can write a letter, either to the perpetrator or those on the receiving end. You can use the power of the vote also. Do what you’d want someone to do were it you being brutalized. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Are you friend or foe?

Butterfly I emerge from this darkness changed. Leaving behind so much of what was me; whole but with missing parts. Pushing myself through a realization that does not include you, physically. Your transformation complete. Mine ... only beginning. La Juana and Patricia Barton
