MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith Publisher

Lady Mona When I look back over my life, I think about so many wonderful people I have had to cross my path, and the indelible mark they left on my life. Sure there’s my parents, grandparents, Godparents, other relatives, former teachers and mentors. Then there’s the folks whose names many know, like James Brown, Dick Gregory, Maya Angelou, Dr. Dorothy Irene Height, Al Lipscomb, Lawrence Young, Comer Cottrell;

Embattled Dallas judge removed from upcoming Democratic primary The Law

By Emma Lynn Staffwriter

The Honorable Teresa Hawthorne, presiding Judge of the 203rd Judicial District Court in Dallas County, was recently deemed ineligible to run for re-election in the 2018 Democratic primary due to errors on the required filing paperwork to run for elected office. Instead of entering which political party she was collecting signatures for in the blank space provided at the top of

each petition page, Judge Hawthorne wrote “March 6, 2018,” which is the date of the upcoming primary election. However, due to the fact that there are both Democratic and Republican pri-

mary elections on March 6th, it is critical for all political candidates to provide clarity when collecting signatures to avoid the potential for misleading voters as to which party the candidate represents.

Hawthorne’s omission of “Democratic Party” on her signature petitions is a violation of Tex. Elec. Code Ann. § 172.027, which states: The following statement must appear at the top of each page of a petition to be filed under Section 172.021: “I know that the purpose of this petition is to entitle (insert candidate’s name) to have his or her name placed on the ballot for the office of (insert office title, including any place number or other distinguishing

My Truth - Mona Humphries Bailey was a role model for all women,

Then in 1978 when I was initiated into Delta, she became forever more than a footnote in my database. Over the years, we encountered one another from time to time and those were beautiful experiences. As Founders Day chair for the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of our sorority in 2009, I had the honor of bringing in Soror Mona, and two other past presidents - Soror Frankie Freeman and Soror Bertha Maxwell Roddy, for the program. What a joy! Then, while at FAMU’s homecoming five years ago, Soror Mona, another FAMU Rattler and Soror, actress T’keyah Crystal Keymah and I discussed working on a project together. The thought of a collaboration with hese two women who I had so much

in common with was so exciting. During the Homecoming festivities, Soror Mona was definitely the highlight of the weekend. It was also our Delta chapter’s 75th anniversary so the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta (BADST) was well represented. That Soror T’keyah was the Homecoming Convocation speaker and Soror Mona had a special role on the program, made the weekend even more memorable. It was also amusing to watch as men openly flirted with Soror Mona as they marveled at her beauty and that she was Miss FAMU more than 50 years prior! I joked with her brother, former FAMU President Dr. Frederick Humphries about how challenging it must have been keeping the guys away back in the day.

Soror Mona told me she was going to visit relatives in Apalachicola, FL., for a few days and then her flight had a layover in Dallas. One of the best decisions I ever made in life was to fix my schedule so that I could be there for that layover. Now those who know Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, to say navigating connecting flights is challenging, would be an understatement. On the day of her flight, I arrived early, talked American Airlines staffers into letting me meet my elderly “sister” at the gate and proceeded through security to meet her. She was surprised that I was able to be there because we know things have changed since September 11th. I laughed and told her she was special! Her connection was in another terminal and so I drove her there. When we got to the security checkpoint there was a little hiccup. You see, if you are over age 75, you don’t have to take off your shoes to go through. Well much to our chagrin, the TSA employees did not believe that Soror Mona was 75! But they told me to keep my shoes on and go right through! Not really, but it sounds good for the story! Can you believe they actually checked her identification? And then the flirting began again. It was so cute. Well, we got inside, finally, and decided we would get something to eat. This had to be the best Delta moment in my life, since initiation! An American Airlines employee and good friend La’Wonda Peoples stopped by and chatted for a few. She too, realized we were among greatness. Believe me when I tell you that I seized that opportunity to talk about any and everything. Family, FAMU, life and more. We laughed about her dear brother because I said he and journalist Roland Martin walked around our Delta conventions like they were running things, like they were members! Soror Mona shared her opinions

and advise and I was like a sponge, soaking everything in. We talked about the future of Delta Sigma Theta. She listened intently as I explained my frustration about the serial rapes that were occurring in our area of Texas, where the perpetrator, who I call “Pookie,” only attacked members of our beloved sisterhood, between the ages of 55 and 65. She was every encouraging as I told her that I was going to use my platforms to continue talking about Pookie until he is caught. Oh, how I didn’t want our visit to end The last time I saw Soror Mona was at the Delta convention in Houston. We chatted for a moment about that “project” we were to work on and we took a picture. Later that day I saw Soror T’keyah and I reminded her of the project and told her that Soror Mona mentioned getting together. I called Soror Mona last summer. I was hopeful that she would be able to

attend Beta Alpha’s 80th anniversary, but she was unable to. Believe me when I say her name was mentioned and her absence was felt. Soror Mona was a jewel. Our jewel. She was an ideal role model for all women. Soror Dr. Julianne Malveaux confirmed Soror Mona’s transition for me. It was a tough conversation. We both knew that someone very special was no longer among us. Much to our dismay later that same night, we would hear that another past president, Soror Freeman, had transitioned. My heart was heavy. It still is. So, If I see you and I hug you a little longer than is usually customary, know that the expression is coming from a place of LOVE. A place where I bonded with Soror Mona!

Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is reporting three additional flu-related deaths in Dallas County totaling 43 flu-related deaths for the 2017-2018 season. The patients range in age from 53 to 93 and were residents of Grand Prairie and Dallas. All patients had high risk health conditions and died after complications from the seasonal flu. For medical confidentiality and personal privacy reasons, DCHHS does not provide additional identifying information. “Staying home when you are sick and practicing good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands helps stop the spread of germs and prevents respiratory illnesses like the flu,” said Ganesh Shivamaiyer, DCHHS interim director. “If you have a high risk condition, remember to keep a safe distance from individuals who have flu like symptoms.” “Older adults, individuals with chronic health conditions, pregnant women, young children and infants

are more vulnerable to flu illness,” said Dr. Christopher Perkins, DCHHS health authority/medical director. “With influenza activity on the rise, individuals in these groups should take special precaution as we continue throughout the season.” Simple actions can be taken to help prevent the spread of seasonal influenza. If you haven’t done it already, protect yourself with a flu vaccination. Cover your cough with a tissue or cough into your sleeve. Wash your hands and keep your hands away from your face. Avoid close contact with people who are coughing or appear ill. Stay home if you are sick or keep family members home if they are sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for all persons aged 6 months and older, with rare exception. Individuals should discuss flu vaccine concerns with a health care provider. The flu vaccine DCHHS provides is an all-in-one shot that protects against multiple flu strains including the H1N1virus. The adult flu vaccine is given in the adult immunization clinic on the first floor at the DCHHS building located at 2377 N. Stemmons Frwy in Dallas. The children’s vaccine is available at all DCHHS immunization clinics. Clinic hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information call 214-819-2162

I understand that by signing this petition I become ineligible to vote in a primary election or participate in a convention of another party, including a party not holding a primary election, during the voting year in which this primary election is held.” Additionally, Tex. Elec. Code Ann. § 141.032(c) states (emphasis added): If an application is accompanied by a petition, the petition is considered part of the application, and the review shall be completed as soon as practicable after the date the application is received by the authority. However, the petition is not considered part of the application for purposes of determining compliance with the requirements applicable to each document, and a deficiency in the requirements for one document may not be remedied by the contents of the other document. Unless the petition is challenged, the authority is only required to review the petition for facial compliance with the applicable requirements as to form, content, and procedure. Petition challenge The errors and omissions (other spaces were left blank) on Hawthorne’s filing were discovered by the Democratic Party in response to a formal challenge of the judge’s petitions filed by her opponent, defense attorney and former Dallas County prosecutor, Raquel “Rocky” Jones, who is seeking to unseat Hawthorne in March. The law allows anyone to request, review and challenge petitions of political candidates. On January 8, 2018, the party accepted Jones’ challenge based on current law, the application and the petition, resulting in Dallas County Democratic Par-

ty chairwoman Carol Donovan’s decision to remove Judge Hawthorne’s name from the upcoming primary election ballot. Legal battle In response to being removed from the ballot by the Dallas County Democratic Party, on January 12, 2018, Judge Hawthorne filed a lawsuit against her own party in an effort to remain on the ballot. The two-term embattled Democratic judge, who initially ran for office in 2006 as a Republican, hired a Republican attorney to represent her in the lawsuit. A hearing on the lawsuit was scheduled for January 19, 2018, in the 160th Civil District Court, where Judge Jim Jordan, a Democrat, is the presiding judge. To avoid ruling on a case involving his judicial peer, Judge Jordan recused himself and a Republican judge was appointed to preside over the hearing about Hawthorne’s lawsuit against the Democratic Party. The hearing lasted approximately 15 minutes, resulting in the visiting judge ruling to put Judge Hawthorne back on the ballot. The trial court’s decision was primarily based on case law from 1992 instead of using the most current case law from 1997 regarding entering the political party affiliation on candidates’ signature petitions. Final answer Following the hearing, that same day Jones’ filed an appeal with the 5th Court of Appeals of Dallas. Later that evening, the panel of appellate judges reversed the trial court’s decision and published an opinion based on current case law that Judge Hawthorne’s name should be removed from the ballot for the 2018 Democratic primary election.

3

continued from page 1

Per federal law, primary election absentee ballots had to be mailed out on January 20, 2018. The 5th Court of Appeals’ opinion was the final course of legal action that could occur before the ballots were mailed out. Per the 5th Court of Appeals of Dallas’ ruling, the absentee ballots were mailed out without Judge Hawthorne’s name printed on them. There is no Republican challenger in the November general election, so the winner of the Democratic primary will be the Judge of the 203rd Judicial District Court for the next four-year term. Hawthorne’s current term on the bench ends on December 31, 2018. Public reprimand In a rare move, last November, the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct issued a Public Reprimand to Judge Hawthorne. The Commission, responsible for investigating allegations of judicial misconduct, reprimanded Judge Hawthorne for using her influence to interfere in her nephew’s criminal case in Lubbock County, and for shaming a jury for their verdict in an unrelated rape case in her court. The state agency further concluded that Judge Hawthorne’s conduct, as described above, constituted willful and/or persistent violations of three standards of the Texas Code of Judicial Conduct and conduct that is inconsistent with the proper execution of her duties, in violation of the Texas Constitution. In addition to the Commission’s Public Reprimand, in 2011, Judge Hawthorne ruled the death penalty unconstitutional in a capital case in her court. Her decision was overturned and the capital punishment case was transferred to another court. www.texasmetronews.com

QUIT PLAYIN’ - Trump is MIGHTY WHITE!

Way back in the days of yesteryear, two-party lines were common in rural areas and there was no need for area codes in the By Vincent L. Hall city. The other day I dialed 9464910 by reflex. That was my grandmother’s old telephone number. I got the cursory recording saying the number had been disconnected. Now even though Mable Lee accepted her long distance collect call from glory a few years ago, every once in a while I find myself calling that number. Whenever I really ached to get the 411, her number would be the first to call. Now for you young-uns, 411 Information was the vehicle for getting names and numbers before Google. Maybe I was watching Donald, “Bull-Trumping (don’t use your phonics, use your critical thinking skills) about how smart he is and invariably how lucky we are to have him in the Oval Office. Maybe, I was reading a tweet where he extolled one of his other compelling virtues. Either

way, I could hear my Grandmother’s voice. “That was mighty White of him.â€? Equipped with the wisdom of my African ancestors, I realized that she had made the transition and her spirit resides within, so I asked her; “Mama, when you used the adage, “that was Mighty White of youâ€? what did you mean? She slapped her leg, laughed and commenced to explain it to me. She reminded me that the saying “Mighty White of youâ€? had several meanings but generally conveyed a haughtiness that was seldom earned. It is the height of the supremacists belief that any and all consideration afforded coloreds, or underlings in general was an act of unmerited favor. It’s Mighty White of the Republicans to remind us that they are the party of Abraham Lincoln‌you know the one who freed the slaves. The same slaves whose masters never held or were granted sovereignty to buy, sell, trade and transfer.

It was Mighty White of Lyndon Baines Johnson to ask Martin Luther King to wait on the Voting Rights Act in 1965 because the Civil Rights Act had just passed a year earlier. Johnson argued that White folks were suffering from “Black fatigue. MLK argued that Civil Rights without voting rights was wrong and would create a constant need for begging. Alternatively applied it could mean that you were a Negro who had assimilated and believed himself as White as the Whitest White man. Like Clarence Thomas or Omarosa. But in most instances, the quip referred to an overwrought pride and a misplaced sense of selfworth. It was that air of unfathomable, unreasonable and uncontested arrogance that only White privilege can attain. There are reasons why people around the globe hold such animus and hatred for Trump and conversely for America. Trump has exported our

overvalued sense of “exceptionalism globally and has used Twitter to leave a permanent paper trail. Have you ever pondered how ridiculous it must seem that America and only America is so powerful that its word alone is enough to silence the League of Nations and declare that Israel be granted unfettered access and ownership of Jerusalem? Man that is Mighty White. Trumpism and this latest strain of Nationalism is generally comprehended as overly proud and overtly pronounced. The great hypocrisy is that we demonize “shitholes abroad while our policies cultivate the growing number we have within our own borders. It would be rational to believe that patriarchy, wealth disparities, child poverty and 63,000 fatal drug overdoses in one year is “shithole territory. It’s Mighty White of us to ever point a finger. Grandmother never picks up the phone, but she always answers my call. I really needed her this time. Trump is too White for most White folks, much less me. Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journalist.

Race and Sex in Judicial Strategy Dallas, On January 15, 2018: The political turmoil in Dallas exploded like a volcano on MLK when the Dallas Morning By Dr. Frederick News, in it’s JuLewis dicial Endorsements Editorial exposed the judicial campaign tactics as beneath the dignity of their office. That is the strategy of white male candidates putting in white women as plants to oppose the black women who oppose them in the March 6, 2018 Democratic Primary — to dilute the voting strength of the black community.

POLITICS IN THE KNOW

Here is the problem. This political tactic goes back to the toolbox of the racist groups such as the Klan, the White Citizens Council and the John Birch Society. The assumption is that women in general are so ignorant and black women in particular are such mental midgets that they do not deserve to be citizens and are only worthy of being my maids! Surely not worthy of being my judge! However, the voting mathematics in this case could backfire and one of the planted opponents could very well win the judgeship. There is a seven-way split in the party today: White Men, White Women, Black Men, Black Women, Brown

Men, Brown Women, and other Mi-

nority Groups. The #MeToo Movement (against sexual harassment, rape etc.) will be a factor. Let me make myself clear. The Democratic Party here in Dallas includes some members both black and white who fought the racist groups and won. However, do not be comfortable because there are no final victories! From the day that President Lyndon Johnson signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act there has been a sustained effort by the forces of evil to suppress the votes of women, blacks and minorities. Yes, we have come a long way in race relations since 1965 and the na-

tion even elected an African American, Barack Obama, President of the United States. But all along there was a constant effort to undermine with words of interposition and nullification the 1965 Voting Rights Act. President Obama faced a great deal of opposition when he was in office. But at all times he conducted himself as a gentleman and a scholar; all the while under the surface of our communities was a simmering resentment of social progress and resulted in a questionable election of Donald Trump and a Nazi March and death in Charlottesville, Va. with the antics, lunacy, alternative facts, (boldfaced lies) of the Trump administration.

AND JUSTICE FOR ALL

Risk > Resources

By Judge Brandon Birmingham

I hear the cry from the people for criminal justice reform-our system is broken. Parts of it work well, and we have made great strides to improve it recently with the advent of DNA evidence and more transparent pretrial discovery laws. But other parts don’t work well, and they never have. Having been in the trenches at Frank Crowley for over 15 years, I am here to confirm, unfortunately, that

the system is still broken and we’ve got a long way to go. I am also here to report that we are working hard to fix it. See if you agree: Bail should be based on a person’s risk, not their resources. Seems simple enough, but our current system doesn’t always measure up. Take this example: two people may be charged with the exact same non-violent offense, have

similar criminal history, and ties to the community. Their bail might be set at 5,000$. The result? One gets out because he has 500$, the other stays in jail because he doesn’t. I talk about bail reform a lot, and sometimes people say to me that I am just trying to let everyone out of jail for free, and that the criminals are going to run wild because we are not holding them accountable. To those critics, I ask them to consider the other side of the coin: what about the violent offenses like Murder or Rape? Is it true that a judge can just deny bail in all circumstances for violent offenses? The answer is no. People are entitled to have bail set even for violent crimes like those. The result? A violent person with

money gets out of jail, released back into the community. That isn’t justice for all. That is justice for all….of those with access to resources. We can do better than that. Here’s how we can fix the bail system in Dallas County: First, we must implement the use of a data-driven risk assessment tool. The purpose of the tool is to scientifically assess a person’s risk to flee and risk to reoffend. In other words, use science and evidence-based tools to help determine who is a risk and who is not. Second, the process should be adversarial. People should have lawyers during the bail hearing, and prosecutors should be present to inform the Court of any aggravat-

5

ing factors of the alleged offense or the person’s background. Finally, we must increase staffing and technology to properly monitor those released on bail to decrease the failure to appear rates. These are precisely the measures we are currently working on in Dallas County, and I am hopeful we can change the system very soon. Why? I firmly believe that a person should not be held in jail pre-trial solely because of an inability to pay. We simply can’t afford to have it any other way. Brandon Birmingham is the Presiding Judge of the Felony District Courts in Dallas County. He can be reached on all social media: @ JudgeBirmingham . Behind the Black Unemployment Rate THE LAST WORD By DR. JULIANNE MALVEAUX

When the unemployment rate dropped and economic conditions improved under the leadership of President Barack Obama, 45 derided the gains as “fake news”. He suggested that the monthly Employment Situation (www.bls.gov) reports of the Bureau of Labor Statistics were inaccurate and “made up”. These are the monthly reports that detail employment statistics,

including unemployment rates. Now that 45 is in charge, he can’t crow often enough about the statistics that he described as “phony” just 18 months ago. For the last week, we have heard 45 and his surrogates crowing that “the black unemployment rate is lower than it has ever been.” And, with a Black unemployment rate of 6.8 percent, they are right that the

Do you know this man?

rate is at its lowest since the Bureau of Labor Statistics started disaggregating data to report unemployment by race. Is this something worth crowing about? Does 45 deserve to get credit for it? The answer to both questions, from my perspective, is a resounding “NO.” First of all, the 6.8 percent unemployment rate African Americans experienced was exactly TWICE the white unemployment rate of 3.4 percent. Suppose that white men

had an unemployment rate of 6.8 percent? Would 45 and his minions be celebrating if whites had the same employment situation as African Americans? I think not. So, celebrating the 6.8 percent rate without speaking of the inequality it is based on is like celebrating the

HE IS A SERIAL RAPIST He targeted members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. but this is more than about a sorority. We’re talking about a community. Come on PEOPLE! Don’t you CARE? Will it matter when it is your sister, mother? aunt or grandmother or maybe YOU?

inequality. Secondly, the unemployment rate is an imperfect measure of the employment situation. The employment-population ratio is a far more accurate way of measuring how fully employed a population is. It measures the percentage of people who are employed. While 69 percent of white men are employed, just 63 percent of Black men are employed (the numbers for women are closer, with African American women actually working MORE than white women, with an employment-population ratio of 59 percent See MALVEAUX, page 6

Malveaux, on the unemployment rate, for Black women and 55 percent for white women). The employment-population ratio and labor force participation rates show racial disparities among men that are alarming. Differences in the employment-population ratio suggest that some African Americans have stopped looking for work because they don't think they can find it. When the Black unemployment rate is adjusted to reflect these realities, it is closer to 10 percent than to the 6.8 percent 45 and his team are crowing out. Furthermore, the 45th President inherited an economy that was improving. Falling unemployment rates are a result of the Obama expansion. Let’s say it again, the Obama expansion. An economic expansion will natural-

www.texasmetronews.com

ly move unemployment rates downward, no matter who is the President. While 45 can only legitimately claim stock market gains for the last two months, as his regressive tax bill has handsomely rewarded corporate interests, stock market gains in the first month of this year might also be considered a result of the Obama expansion. Will 45 take credit for the stagnant wages that plague all workers, but especially African American workers? While unemployment rates have dropped, wages have not risen by very much (less than 2 percent last year). Sure, some workers got tax bill-related bonuses, and Walmart will raise their wages for some workers to $11 an hour. Most workers

are stuck making the same amount of money they made three years ago. Does 45 take credit for income and wealth differences between African Americans and whites? The average white family has a $65,000 income, compared to just $39,000 for African Americans. And the average African American household has just $17,000 in wealth, compared to $171,000 for whites. When 45 crows about a 6.8 percent unemployment rate for African Americans, he normalizes the fact that African Americans should have a higher unemployment rate than whites. And when he talks unemployment out of context and ignores income and wealth disparities, he is suggesting that the

www.texasmetronews.com

continued from page 5 current conditions of African Americans are something to celebrate. If this President were really interested in the economic status of African Americans he would have produced a different tax bill, ceased his attacks on health care, and directed his secretary of education to stop attacking public education and HBCUs. But 45 isn’t interested in the economic status of African Americans. He is interested in bragging about data he once dismissed as “phony.” Julianne Malveaux is an economist, author, and Founder of Economic Education. The devil is a liar Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

I’m sure at one time or another, you’ve heard the phrase, “the devil is a liar.” I’ve said it here many times. Satan specializes in deceit. You know the drill. Harden not your heart, when you hear the Word of God. More often than not, that small voice you hear at difficult times, when your faith is really challenged, is that of Satan. Be careful when it happens to you, because according to the Bible, you are indeed in dangerous waters. One of my favorite passages of scripture is, “Some people are like seed along the path where the Word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the Word that was sown in them.” (Mark 4:5). My point is that recognition is a most powerful attribute to have. If you could only recognize when you’re being fooled, used, manipulated or lied to by someone or something hell-bent on destroying you, then possibly you might be able to handle it accordingly. I have a pastor friend that reminds me that the devil does not want to just hurt you. He wants you dead. Emotionally, we all have responded vehemently when recognition affords us the opportunity to see when we’re being made a fool of by someone else. For the perpetrator, it is not a pretty picture. In Satan’s case, he doesn’t always show his hand in a manner obvious to us. The devil is a liar and specializes in presenting situations and circumstances that never reveal his hand in your life as the reason that everything is going to Hell in a hay basket. “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness…” (2 Corinthians 11: 14-15). So, it is my speculation, www.texasmetronews.com

using what I hope is my sanctified imagination, that Satan is hard at work in your life, when you are most likely trying to be true to your faith. The Bible says watch out, because it is at these times that “so-called” supporters, advice givers and yes, even friends and family show up to help us, comfort us, guide us in a way that on the surface, appears to be consistent with our efforts to hear and follow the Word of God. In truth, if we could see the devil at work, then it would be fairly easy to make the right decisions and the right choices. But the devil is so cunning that at that moment of truth, he sees to it that we blame others, rationalize our actions, defend sin and otherwise fault life for what we ought to know that God has total control over. In the name of everything but Satan, we can explain away all those things that will virtually insure us a ringside seat in Hell. Rarely do we permit ourselves the time and thought to recognize this is the devil doing his best to win your soul as his ultimate prize. Rarely, if ever, will we give him his due for all that we regret doing on the morning after. Rarely do we consider him or his agents the night before the morning after. If we did, then the Word of God would emerge out of our chaos and light our paths to peace as in peace of mind. At this point, how we live becomes second nature to why we live. When one understands the why of life, the how becomes pretty easy. “Be careful then, how you live, not as unwise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” (Ephesians 4:15-18). The key to all this, I believe, is recognizing the difference between God’s Word and the devil’s whispers. It’s those whispers and who’s in your ear that’ll getcha every time.

May God bless and keep you always.

James

Please, Don’t Ask My Neighbor! Dear Alma, My neighbor and I have been friends for three years. I relocated from out of town, so it was a relief when we hit it off and started a wonderful friendship. We both have children around the same age and our husbands are friends too. Both families have been on vacations together and, like I said, we all get along great. Recently, though, there seems to be one problem that I think is pretty big but my neighbor doesn’t see as much of a problem at all. Our two oldest children are starting junior high school and we have two very different ways of parenting. She’s more of a what you’d call an organic, sunflower, easy-going, “let it go” kinda mom. She’s carefree and lets it flow. I’m fine with this approach – for her kids. By contrast, I’m firm and what some might call a helicopter mom. My kids have rules, they have chores, they do work for their allowances. Her kids don’t have any responsibilities. They just play. My rules include no television during the week and homework must be completed when my kids get home from school. The trouble is, I have had to take on a part-time job – FYI, I’m not happy about this -- and she’s now looking after my kids after school. To return the favor, I take her kids on weekends to give her a break. As second moms to each other’s children, how do we, best friends and neighbors, find a happy medium between our parenting styles when caring

Ask ALMA for each other’s kids? -- Jackie B. in VA Beach Hey Jackie B., Now let me see…. I ain’t tryin’ to step on nobody’s mama’s toes, you know what I’m sayin’. Surely you’ve heard the term, it takes a village to raise a child, and although when I hear

Sunflower-Mama will offer what she does best. It’s a different vibe. Her rules are written in the sandbox not whittled in the backyard tree. So be it. Go with the flow. The best you can do is give her a list of instructions, but you can’t control if or when she’ll carry them out. Stop demanding that each task be met ‘cause that, my darling, would be a job that requires payment. Otherwise it’s a favor. The responsibility to follow your list may lie more on the laps of your kids than your neighbor. I suggest you readjust your

I appreciate your question because it shows you’re interested in participating in that village concept -- except you just wanna make sure all involved are following your extensive, finely tuned ritual of rules. Texas Legends Host Military Appreciation Night

Story and Photos By Dorothy J Gentry Sports Editor

The Texas Legends, dressed in custom jerseys, celebrated America’s true legends during the eighth annual Military Night, benefiting The American Fallen Soldiers Project. The Legends and sponsors Swupit andKVGI Radio, filled Dr Pepper Arena with a celebration of our nation’s heroes, remembering our fallen and honoring all who have and are serving. Legends guard Donald Sloan said honoring the military should be more than just one night. “They’ve done so much for us, putting their lives on the line to help protect us. We should honor them all the time.” Said Legends President and General Manager Malcolm Farmer: “Every game for us is an opportunity to celebrate heroes in our community. Our military night is always one of our biggest nights of the year because it gives our fans, players, and staff the opportunity to say thank you in a big, unified gesture.” Prior to the game, the Legends held a 21-gun salute and moment of silence for all fallen soldiers, including Legends family member, Sgt. Stephen Jackel. “They are our protection. I appreciate the help and support and everything they do for us and our country,” said

Service members salute and honor the military Legends forward Jameel Warney. During halftime, artist Phil Taylor of The American Fallen Soldiers Project presented an original portrait to the family of fallen

hero Army Sgt. Jonathan Rozier. Sgt. Rozier was 25 years old when he was killed in Baghdad serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Rozier family were recognized as “Legends of the Night” prior to the game and all members of the armed forces stood for recognition during the service. “We have three tenets that we stand by,” American Fallen Soldier Project co-founder Lisa Tay-

lor said. “The first is to honor the serviceman and his sacrifice; the second is to honor their family; and the third is to remind Americans of the sacrifice that’s been made to protect our freedoms. One of the common concerns from the families we serve is that their loved one will be forgotten. We’re able to accomplish all of these goals through the public presentations. It helps remind everybody and it also opens their heart a little bit to where they recognize it.” “This night is something we look forward to each year,” said Kevin Hodes, President of Swypit and Co-Founder of KVGI Radio. “Phil [Taylor] has a unique calling that allows him to use his talents to bring peace to this families. It’s an honor to get to be a part of that and bring it to the Legends venue to further their cause.” For more information on The American Fallen Soldiers Project, visit americanfallensoldiers.com. The Texas Legends are an NBA G League team based in Frisco, Texas and the minor league affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks. The Legends play their home games at the Dr Pepper Arena. Jasper E. Baccus, Jr. remembered Carl Baccus and Bobbie Baccus Lanham of Los Angeles, CA; 49 grandchildren, 69 great grand children; 8 great great children; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who have become family over the years. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Baccus Sr. and sisters Doris Baccus McMath, Dr. Ruth Baccus Murray and Fannie Baccus.

Jasper Edward Baccus Jr. was born in Dallas, Texas on September 20, 1928. He was the second of 8 children, born to Jasper Edward Baccus, Sr. and Edna Nixon Baccus. He departed on January 15, 2018. Jasper Baccus, Jr. truly understood obeying the gospel to become a Christian and he made that commitment at an early age. He was baptized at Lawrence & Marder Church of Christ, where he was the song leader and faithful member. He later attended Cedar Crest and Dallas West Church of Christ. At the time of his demise, he was a faithful member of Central Pointe’ Church of Christ, under the leadership of Sr. Minister Dr. Rodney Dulin. Jasper attended Phyllis Wheatley Elementary and Lincoln High School. He united in matrimony with Dorothy, Mary and Billie; all who preceded him in death. Within those unions 16 children were born. An avid golfer, Jasper was the entrepreneur’s businessman. He started and grew Baccus Cleaners into one of the premiere dry cleaners establishments in Dallas, with the anchor store located in the heart of Sunny South Dallas on Martin Luther King Blvd where it intersects with Malcolm X Blvd. Jasper loved life and people. He wanted to see his people and community thriving and he did all he could toward that end. A long time member and former chairman of the board of the PylonSalesmanship Club, Jasper always had a smile, word of wisdom or kind word. Jasper leaves to cherish his memory, his children: Herman Baccus, Carolyn Baccus Taylor, Kathryn Baccus Scroggins (Ray), Don Baccus (Pat), Beverly Baccus Scroggins (Harold), Debra Moore, Michael Baccus, Paul Baccus Sr., Glenn Baccus Sr. (Detrick), Marilyn Baccus, Gayla Baccus Daniels (Mike), Carlton Baccus Wesson (Laurie), Jasper Baccus III, Simona Beltran, Latoya Baccus and Brandon Baccus; ex-wife Sandra Baccus Lane and Step Daughter Calice White; siblings Brooksie Baccus Rogers (Arthur), and Annie Baccus Bell (Joe) of Dallas, TX, Dr. www.texasmetronews.com

mer Secretary of State Colin Powell once weighed in against negative stereotyping of Muslims saying, “He’s a Christian...But the really right answer is, what if he is” a Muslim? Nunnally concluded, “There are many, many, many layers of what that picture can represent to people in their various perceptions. So, I say this to mean that I can see that the release of that photo in that given moment, it would have been highly controversial.” Also, pictured in the photo is Rev. Willie Wilson, executive producer of the program for Farrakhan’s Million Man March in 1995 and a chairman of the 20th anniversary. In an interview, Wilson says he doesn’t recall the photo and didn’t know he was in it. But hearing the description, he also was certain it could have hurt Obama’s campaign. “I’m sure it would,” Wilson said. “Given all of the furor related to the sermon that his pastor, Jeremiah Wright did, I’m sure that it would more than likely have had a tremendous effect on his candidacy.” Wilson says Farrakhan is so controversial because, “He speaks truth and this is a country that has in so many ways attempted to cover up the realities of its wrong doings of which Minister Farrakhan is quite vocal in bringing to light.” The book tells of other notables who knew about the photograph and never divulged it. In addition to narratives of pivotal moments of his life, the autobiography is also a book of Muhammad’s poetry. Columnist and political observer A. Peter Bailey, anticipating the book release, says he believes the photo would have created controversy for Obama, but could not have caused him to lose the election or his re-election because of the groundswell of Black voter support for him. “It could have done some damage,” Bailey said. “But nothing could have stopped the election because Black support would have countered it.”
