MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith Publisher

Quiet Storm?

REV. DR. ZAN WESLEY HOLMES, JR.

As a historian, because that is what I really believe journalists are, I’ve often thought about men and women from past centuries and wondered what life would have been like walking the earth with them. I wonder how they navigated through all that life threw their way and if they had any idea of how future generations would look at them and their lives. The Rev. Al Sharpton said the hardest eulogy to give is for someone who you have to hallucinate about their life. During their time on earth, there wasn’t much that they did for anyone other than themselves and the only evidence that they lived will be the tombstone that people stumble across. Such will not be the case with the Rev. Zan Wesley Holmes Jr., the Pastor Emeritus of St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church. He served as senior pastor at St. Luke for almost three decades! THIS IS BLACK HISTORY Black Panther is a must-see By Hollywood Hernandez Entertainment Critic

The first thing people will want to know about Black Panther is does it live up to all the hype surrounding it? Well, the answer is a very unabashed, yes! You have never seen a movie like this one. It is Marvel’s first masterpiece on the big screen. Comparing it to the first super hero movie with a black lead character, Blade, in 1998, Black Panther is the first major comic book movie with an almost entirely black cast. The movie also presents the women in the film in a positive light as warriors and as royalty. This is a movie that has been long overdue for a time that blacks and women are achieving great things in today’s modern history. And it’s not just a “black movie”--it’s an eagerly anticipated film for all moviegoers. Chadwick Boseman is regal as T’Challa/ Black Panther. He is the heir to the throne of Wakanda, a country with the most advanced technology in the world. The African country has to be kept hidden from the rest of the world because of that advanced technology, which they fear could end up in the wrong hands. Those fears are realized when a traitor, Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) betrays his nation and sells the secrets and the raw materials to make advanced See BLACK PANTHER, page 14

by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Prayer is fundamental to our progress as a nation, and to our personal growth as human-beings. In each of our lives, it represents an opportunity to reflect, and to grow closer to God. And at the moment, when we find ourselves in somewhat bewildering times, prayer is even more important to our wholeness, and to our thinking. During times of regret and despair, prayer brings a sense of renewal and grace. For the past two decades I have invited people in North Texas to a prayer breakfast in Dallas. This year’s prayer breakfast, the twenty-fourth, has the same objective as

Yes, We Must Pray

those that preceded it, bringing together a diverse group of faith leaders to pray collectively for our congressional district and its residents, for our state, for our nation and for our world. The composition of our sessions has reflected the ethnic, cultural and faith complexion of North Texas. People of many colors and various beliefs have been present over the years, and have experienced a sense of oneness. Many of them met for the first time at the breakfasts, established friendships and have worked with one another on projects to enhance the larger community. The prayers spoken by those

at the breakfasts have their origins in the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths. Though some of the words were different, the messages touched the hearts of all those in attendance. Prayer does not acknowledge differences. All people are its beneficiaries. When I was a child my siblings and I were taught the power of prayer by our parents. As a family we prayed before each meal, and during times when we gathered together to reflect and make decisions. Prayer became a guiding

light in my life. I prayed as a student in high school, and in college. I prayed while I was pregnant with my son, Kirk. Prayer has played a major role in every election that I participated in, and in every decision that I have made as an elected official. I could not have withstood the rigors of public life, and its many disappointments and challenges, if I had not been equipped with prayer. I am extremely grateful to all of those

who have been a part of our prayer vigils. They have been sustained by prayer, and it is reflected in the good works that they have done, and continue to do, in our district and throughout the state of Texas. I urge everyone to pray on a regular basis. It brings renewal to our spirits, hope when we are dispirited and much-needed clarity during periods of turmoil.

Raquel “Rocky Jones touts record, continued from front page Cases of interest One of the biggest deficiencies in the 203rd is the lack of accountability. While incarceration is certainly not the appropriate punishment for every case, likewise probation is not the appropriate punishment for every offense and in some instances is actually a disservice to the community when a judge repeatedly places defendants on probation who abscond (run away), have a history of being repeat offenders and/or graduate from non-violent crimes to violent crimes. I expect criminal judges to look at the evidence in each case, consider the defendant’s criminal history, whether or not he/she reports to probation regularly and hold them accountable for their actions in a manner that does not pose a threat to public safety. Below are examples of presiding Judge Teresa Hawthorne’s extensive history of continuing to give probation time after time to defendants who plead guilty on felony offenses even after they have violated the conditions of their probation, absconded or re-offended while on probation. State of Texas vs. Leo Rickey Deleon Deleon was initially placed on deferred adjudication for the offense of Attempted Robbery and while on probation, the defendant committed and plead guilty to Injury to a Child Performance of a Sex Act on a 3-yearold and Judge Hawthorne continued him on the original probation and placed him on a new probation for the subsequent offense. While on probation, Deleon yet again commits another felony offense — intoxication manslaughter that decapitated his girlfriend and then he fled from police resulting in a felony Failure to Stop and Render Aid offense. In a hearing to determine what should happen in these four felony offenses, the judge opted for probation AGAIN. Justice was further denied when Deleon absconded from court-ordered drug treatment. State of Texas vs. Awoniyi Adedeya Judge Hawthorne placed Adedeya on probation for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. In violation of his probation, Defendant Adedeya was seen at a gun show in Ft. Worth having his girlfriend purchase a weapon for him as a strawman purchaser. This is when an individual buys a gun for someone who is prohibited by law from possessing one or for someone who does not want his or her name associated with the transaction. Strawman purchases are illegal. Several officers

and federal agents testified to witnessing and seeing Adedeya at the gun show, selecting the gun and having his girlfriend complete the purchase. Judge Hawthorne did not believe the officers and continued the defendant on probation. State of Texas vs. Javonta Williams Defendant Williams was convicted of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon/Serious Bodily Injury/Family Violence for shooting his girlfriend in the head in front of her daughter. A Dallas County jury sentenced the defendant to life in prison. Judge Hawthorne was upset about the jury’s verdict and advised the defendant’s lawyers to file an appeal and also file a motion for new trial, which she stated she would grant. The judge was later recused from (prohibited from presiding over) the case for telling the attorneys how to proceed and telling them in advance that she would grant the motion for new trial prior to hearing any evidence, therefore, demonstrating clear bias. The case was removed from the 203rd and transferred to another trial court. The reprimand In addition to the judge’s misuse of probation, in an extremely rare move, in November 2017, the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct issued a Public Reprimand to Judge Hawthorne. The Commission, responsible for investigating allegations of judicial misconduct, reprimanded Judge Hawthorne for using her influence to interfere in her nephew’s criminal case in Lubbock County, and for shaming a jury for their verdict in an unrelated rape case of a 65-year-old woman in her court. Following a trial in the 203rd, the jury in a brutal rape case sentenced the defendant to 99 years in prison and Judge Hawthorne told the jury she did not believe the woman had been raped. In her nephew’s criminal case, Judge Hawthorne showed up at a hearing and attempted to serve as a character witness for him, an action that is prohibited for sitting judges. She also tried to influence and communicate with a Lubbock County judge about her nephew’s case without including the prosecutor or defense attorney on the

communications, an action that is unethical. Petition challenge Judge Hawthorne was recently deemed ineligible to run for re-election in the 2018 Democratic primary due to entering the wrong information on the filing paperwork required to run for elected office. Judge Hawthorne wrote “March 6, 2018,” which is the date of the upcoming primary election, in the blank space provided at the top of each petition page. The problem with not identifying which political party you represent during signature collection is there are both Democratic and Republican primary elections on March 6th. Therefore, it is critical to clearly identify your political affiliation to avoid any appearance of misleading voters as to which party a candidate represents. (Judge Hawthorne first ran for judge as a Republican in 2006 and switched parties when she ran as a Democrat in 2010). I simply brought the incomplete petitions and applicable election laws to the attention of the Democratic Party to ensure the playing field was level entering into the primary. The Party reviewed the challenge and in accordance with the law, made the decision to remove Judge Hawthorne’s name from the 2018 Democratic primary ballot. This resulting action was 100% avoidable by Judge Hawthorne. Some critics of the challenge have alleged that the Party did not provide sufficient guidance or instructions on how to properly complete the paperwork, yet in a review of Hawthorne’s filings from 2009 and 2013, there were no errors and no missing information on her petitions. If the tables had been turned and there had been legitimate questions about my filing paperwork, I have no doubt my former opponent would have submitted a challenge to the validity of my candidacy. Raquel “Rocky” Jones at-a-glance I am a licensed attorney with more than 21 years of experience and I have worked as a prosecutor (adult and juvenile), criminal defense lawyer and a civil attorney and have tried all types of felony offenses. I most recently served the citizens of Dallas County as a Chief Prosecutor in the Felony Division of

the District Attorney’s Office and recently resigned to run for elected office in accordance with office policy. I have a total of 17 years experience as a prosecutor between my service in Dallas County and my previous years of service at the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office. I am currently working as a criminal defense attorney at the Law Office of Raquel “Rocky” Jones. I am the daughter of a single mother who was raised in Arlington, Texas. I graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and journalism, and earned a threeyear scholarship to attend St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio. During law school, I studied abroad in Innsbruck, Austria, at the Institute on World Legal Problems. My law licenses include the State Bar of Texas, U.S. District Court of Northern Texas and the United States Supreme Court. Always eager to affect change in my profession beyond the walls of the courtroom, I am active in professional and civic organizations including the Texas District and County Attorneys Association, where I have served as a faculty advisor and regular speaker. I am an adjunct professor at the University of North Texas; a distinguished member of Texas Bar College; serve on the Desoto City Council Charter Review Commission; am a dedicated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; an active member of Community Missionary Baptist Church; a member of the Texas A&M University Alumni Association; a lifelong Democrat; wife; and mother. I believe my extensive knowledge of the law, range of criminal legal experience and years as an instructor for trial lawyers, coupled with more than two decades of dedicated community service make me qualified to serve Dallas County as Judge of the 203rd Judicial District Court. The Dallas Morning News, Progressive Voters League – New Era, Stonewall Democrats, Dallas Police Association, Mexican American Bar Association, Lake Highlands White Rock Democrats and Preston Hollow Democrats have endorsed my campaign. Please join them in supporting me at the polls so we can restore accountability to the 203rd. Early voting begins February 20th and election day is March 6, 2018. QUIT PLAYIN’ - I’m With Her

Dallas Democrats are in a no lose situation when it comes to the Dallas County By Vincent L. Hall District Attorney’s race. This is not a choice of the lesser of two evils. Former judge and prominent litigator John Creuzot is a good man but former judge and masterful trial lawyer, Elizabeth Davis Frizell is a helluva woman; and that Trumps all. Either candidate will be a formidable foe for the sitting DA who was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott. (Hint, Hint.) Both candidates have ample trial and bench experience; both are knowledgeable of the law. However, Frizell, a lifelong Democrat has a passion and perspective for the job that signals some major changes in the local criminal justice system. Dallas’ first Black DA Craig Watkins kicked in the door, but we need someone to manage the store. As one local Pastor put it; “We don’t need someone to tweak the system, it’s got to be transformed. African-American women will be the turnkey vote in this election. Black Twitter and Facebook are ablaze in a movement to end America’s Mass Incarceration nightmare. Ending “The school to prison to pipeline has become the rallying cry in Black America.

There is a newfound appreciation for former Speaker Tip O’Neill’s constant admonishment; “All politics are local. As Donald Trump fills the higher courts with right-wing Conservatives, our only defense is to fill local courts with judges who are somber, sensitive and creative. There are too many young

minority men in jails and prison. There has been a rise in the number of women being incarcerated. Consequently, the lives of thousands of our children have been decimated and our juvenile justice system is overburdened. Almost 25 years ago, Liz was appointed by the court to defend a family member. It was a murder case, but there were issues around the decedent and

whether his death was caused by the injury or by medical negligence. For two weeks, I sat by her side and watched as she meticulously dismembered the prosecution team. Creuzot has been both Democrat and Republican as it suited his needs. Read “The Untold Story of Susan Hawk, November 2015 in D Magazine. The story details how the Republican leadership tried to draft Creuzot to run against Craig Watkins. The GOP still got love for him. That speaks volumes to me. However, and being blatantly honest, I invest no hope and little trust in elected Black Republicans since the age of Ronald Reagan. Nunca, Nunca, Nunca. Hollywood Hernandez Live

By Hollywood Hernandez Movie Review

The 15:17 to Paris On August 21, 2015 three y o u n g Amer icans were on board a train to Paris when a terrorist, armed with au t o m at i c weapons and several hundred rounds of ammunition, tried to take over the train. The three friends, two of them with military training, sprung into action and subdued the terrorist, at great personal risk, saving the lives of all the passengers on the train. The 15:17 to Paris is the true life story of that act of heroism. Not only is it the true story, the movie also features the three real life heroes who thwarted the attack. Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos all play themselves. Also a local connection in the film is Ray Corasani, who plays the terrorist. He attended The University of Texas in Arlington (UTA). The actual story of the attack takes place in the last 30 minutes of the movie. Everything that comes before that tells the life stories of the three friends and shows what bought them to the that attack

on board the train. It almost seems as if they were destined to be there at that moment in history like it was a crazy case of serendipity. The movie begins by showing the three friends in junior high (obviously played by three younger actors) right through their young adult lives as they each struggle to find their place in the world. While the three real life characters add authenticity to the movie their acting skills are a bit amateurish along side the professional actors in the film. Director Clint Eastwood handles the three inexperienced actors amazingly well and makes a film that relies on the story of friendship and heroism to make you overlook that one blaring weakness in the film. The finished product isn't terrible or excellent. It's just somewhere in the middle. Be sure to stay after the final credits for actual footage of the "Heroes Parade" the three young men received in their hometown of Sacramento. CA. The movie is rated PG-13 for violence and language and has a run time of 1 hour and 34 minutes. Although inspiring the movie only rates a MEDIUM on my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale."

Hurricane Katrina revisited in Dallas Black Dance Theatre show By Hollywood Hernandez Photos by Frank A. Lott

THE DALLAS BLACK DANCE THEATRE PRESENTS CULTURAL AWARENESS ON FEBRUARY 16-18 AT THE WYLY THEATRE, 2400 FLORA STREET, DALLAS, TEXAS. Dance, poetry and The Kickin' Brass Band are used to reflect on the 12-year

anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in Displaced, Yet/Rebirth. Hurricane Katrina survivor Michelle N. Gibson uses choreographic artistry to weave movement and traditions of the rich New Orleans culture she calls home. The New Orleans native, who now resides in Dallas, is a walking, talking and dancing encyclopedia of New Orleans culture and history. I had the opportunity to spend some time with Ms. Gibson and The Dallas Black Dance Theratre troop at a rehearsal as they prepared for the opening night of their dance performance. The very first thing you notice about Michelle

Gibson is her passion--Her passion for dance, her passion for New Orleans and her passion for humanity. Ms. Gibson is the "mother hen" to all the young dancers who hang on her every word and direction. She prays wth the group before rehearsal. She teaches them and most of all she dances with the group helping to bring out not just the dancers technique, but she imparts the soul of the dance on each of the members of the Dance Theatre. She also listens. During the rehearsal the collective group of dancers and musicians had a problem on where to end a piece of music so the dancers could all end in unison with the band. One of the dancers suggested a small change at the end of the piece that would put the brass band and the dancers on the same page. Ms. Gibson eagerly allowed the group to work it out together to solve the issue and then, with her blessing, the problem was resolved. I was lifted simply by the rehearsal. The combination of the authentic brass band,

led by lead trumpet player Thaddeus Ford II and the Dallas Black Dance Theatre gave me chills. Add to that some choreography to some spoken word pieces where the group has to evacuate New Orleans and you have not just an entertaining dance piece; you have a very moving one. Choreographer Gibson puts all of her heart and soul into this number and the "Rebirth" dance is only one of five dances which will be featured on the program. Another aspect of this weekend's Dallas Black Dance program is a tribute to one of the most iconic leaders of our time, Nelson Mandela. "His Grace" by Christopher L. Huggins is dedicated to the former South African president. The work features images of Mandela along with techno music from American artist Moby. The program runs Friday, February 16th and Saturday, February 17th at 7:30PM and there is a matinee on Sunday, February 18th at 2:30PM. Tickets are available at the AT&T performance website:https://tickets.attpac. org/production/46422 www.texasmetronews.com

See that Devil... Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

Invariably as a Christian, the notion of Satan will come up and that conversation can range from soup to nuts, as we all know. I am often encouraged in these, sometimes crazy, discussions that God’s plan is very precise and obvious to those looking for His Word. My favorite point of reference in all of this is Matthew 4:1-11 regarding the three temptations of Jesus in the desert after 40 days of fasting. Remember when Satan offers Christ ‘all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor?’ I was shocked at the power the devil has to tempt each and every one of us as we operate on what is essentially his turf. Now you’ve got to remember Lucifer hung out with the Lord in heaven. They were roadies for a while until he got the big head and was banished to this physical realm where we reside. Once Jesus rebuked Satan for the third time, scripture says, “Then the devil left Him and angels came and attended Him.” So once Jesus withstood temptation, God then delivered unto Him all that Satan had offered and more. You see, in reality, all that stuff that Satan tempted Christ with was Jesus’ birthright anyway and get this: It’s ours also. So, let me get this straight. The devil probably knows the Bible better than we do. He understands what tempts us, because he knows what pleases the Lord. Remember, they once hung out together. It stands to reason that I am a much easier target than Jesus was and ruination for me won’t necessarily take the promise of all kingdoms of the world and their splendor. However, my biblically inspired common sense lets me know that I am made in the image of God and www.texasmetronews.com

I’ll be okay if I surrender all that I have and all that I am to Him; He, who is my Lord and Savior. By doing so I should be able to put myself in a position to at least see the devil coming. If I can just see him coming, then maybe I’ll be able to withstand, for a moment in time, the perceived need to have my wants and desires satisfied by sacrificing the integrity of my soul for momentary gratification. Intellectually, I understand the difference between the temptation of sin and a test of faith. It’s all about perspective, that which is spiritual and that which is secular. Once Jesus answered each of Satan’s successive temptations with Matthew 4:4: “It is written; Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” Matthew 4:7: It is also written; Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” Matthew 4:10: “Away from me Satan! For it is written, Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only,” then the devil left and the angels came. The key then is to get on the other side of temptation by walking in the Word consciously enough to understand that just saying no to Satan is an absolute guarantee of getting all that you desire and need in this life. What must be overcome however is the cunning nature of the devil in his efforts to get you and me to forget, ignore or not take seriously that he is indeed the source of the temptation(s) designed to kill you and hurt the Lord. When in doubt, call on the name of the Lord and eventually Satan will be replaced with angels ready to attend to you. As Jesus so appropriately put it, “Seek ye first the kingdom and whatever it is that you desire, you will have more…” May God bless and keep you always.

Neighbor’s Loud Lovemaking is Annoying Ask ALMA Dear Alma, I live in a lovely three-story apartment building and get along famously with most of my neighbors – except for one who occasionally makes love to his girlfriend very loudly. It doesn’t happen that often, and the other neighbors don’t seem to mind. I have tried talking to him about it, and I have even banged on the wall separating us, but it hasn’t stopped. Black Panther is a must-see, continued from page 1

weapons to Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis); the only outsider to ever see Wakanda and who knows about the country’s advanced technology. T’Challa is unique because unlike the other characters in the Marvel Universe who simply fight for themselves, he is also a king and he has to balance his time away to fight evil with his time as the king of Wakanda. His dual roles force him to travel into two separate worlds and he is torn between the two. Lupita Nyong’o plays Nakia, the “new school warrior” who devotes her time to helping the less fortunate of Africa and is also the object of Y’Challa’s affection, while Okeye (Danai Gurira) is the “old school warrior.” She plays the queen’s general and is fiercely loyal to both her queen and her country. The two actresses do a marvelous job of portraying strong women who support each other for a common goal. The remainder of the cast, including Angela Bassett and Forrest Whitaker, are equally strong and the vision of a

current day African country, that is like none we’ve ever seen before in a movie is created by director Ryan Coogler (Creed and Fruitvale Station). The director paints a painstakingly detailed tapestry of a royal African nation, weaving in colors like royal purple and lush greens. The cinematography is a treat to watch on the big screen. As a comic book/super hero movie, Black Panther delivers, but the quality of the film is so much more than the standard action movie.

www.texasmetronews.com

According to industry sources, the movie has the highest production cost of any previous Marvel movie. Although that exact production cost has not been revealed the world that was created for Wakanda and the high paced actions scenes used money that was well spent. There is so much more to enjoy about Black Panther but I want to be careful not to reveal any details that may ruin your movie-going experience. I will say the movie has action, adventure, comedy and romance. Black Panther is everything a

movie should be. It’s rated PG-13 for violence and has a run time of 2 hours and 14 minutes. Also, as in all Marvel comics movies, there’s a tease scene that runs after the closing credits and there’s also the obligatory appearance by Marvel creator Stan Lee. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” Black Panther gets my highest rating possible, a JUMBO (with extra butter)! Believe the hype! http://www.hollywoodhernandezlive.com/

Always with Me So much of who I am, is you. I remember your hands holding me up. Pulling me forward. Pushing me into a being that will continue beyond what you accomplished and move towards all that you dreamed of. Making a way for others because it was the right thing to do. My Truth, continued from front page

If I didn’t already have love for former TV journalist Ramona Logan, I did develop a greater love for her after she invited me to worship with her at St. Luke! And wherever I travel someone knows “Zan.” He’s been a mentor to so many and he leads with such class. One day I am going to publish my book featuring the Men of Swagger I recognized on DFWiRadio a few years ago. Of course Rev. Holmes had to be featured. Have you ever watched him walk into a room? Saunter up to the microphone? Lean over to share a message with someone? You see, he doesn’t have to bust into the room or yell to draw attention to himself. Instead it is that quiet, unassuming demeanor that could make sense out of the senselessness and bring order to chaos. Radio personality Melvin Lindsey originated the “Quiet Storm” format at Howard University’s WHUR-FM in 1976 and that format is still popular today, almost a half century later. Centuries from now, people will remember Rev. Zan for so many reasons and one so important one is as the man, in times or turbulence and turmoil he could quiet a storm! And, yes it is, like I told another Man of Swagger, the Rev. Joseph Lowery; ‘it’s the

Cheryl Smith and The Rev. Dr. Zan Wesley Holmes, Jr. way you walk, the way you talk, and sometimes it’s just the way you do absolutely nothing. Your mere presence exudes greatness, confidence, love, compassion, strength and so much more.’ Born on February 1, 1935,

Efforts are underway now to raise money for this “nonprofit organization creating self-sustaining pathways out of poverty for young people and families in Dallas, Texas, through education and job placement.” “As people of faith, we should always continue to work to lift those who find themselves in difficult situations,” Dr. Zan W. This year he will be joined by the Honorable Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. The In Conversation Title Sponsor is none other than Roland Parrish and Parrish McDonald’s Restaurants. Now that’s another wonderful person whose legacy is intact! Space does not permit the complete history of Rev. Zan Holmes, but hopefully this small glimpse let’s you know that we have great people walking among us and we should treasure them. I absolutely love Rev. Holmes, and to paraphrase comedian George Wallace; there’s nothing anyone can do about it!
