My Thursday nights are enhanced by viewing a 30-minute show, The Rundown with Robin Thede on BET. Not only is the show entertainRobin Thede ing; it is enlightening and informative. She says what many think but don’t have the platform or, in some cases, the guts; to say! For those who are not familiar with this young lady, let me tell you, she is far from an overnight sensation. She has more than paid her dues on the way to becoming only the 5th African American female to be host of a late-night TV talk show in America. With a degree in Broadcast Journalism and African-American Studies from Northwestern University, Ms. Thede has cut her teeth in the industry and has an extensive and impressive portfolio. As her first season of The Rundown with Robin Thede came to a close, the focus and not for the first time, centered around black women running and getting elected to office. Actress/activist Erika Alexander joined her for the show. Have you heard of #SeatSnatch2018 or #VoteRunLead? Well Ms. Thede knows what she is talking about. After all, her mom is Iowa State Representative Phyllis Thede. And Ms. Alexander, who serves as a board member of RunVoteLead, was presented with a nice check, so the work can continue. Ms. Thede also pointed out that the canSee TRUTH, page 9

Dallas Wings add UCONN player in WNBA Draft By Dorothy J Gentry Sports Editor
As a little girl, AzurĂĄ Stevens always dreamed of playing in the WNBA. Her dream became reality when she heard her name called by the Dallas Wings as the No. 6 overall pick (1st round) in last week’s WNBA Draft. “I’m really excited, honestly. I’m just excited to get there and work with the team and the staff,â€? said the University of Connecticut standout. “It’s honestly just surreal. She has said in interviews that she modeled her game after Durant, and was truly stunned by the message from the former MVP on arguably the biggest night of her life. “Oh my God. Holy crap. That was Kevin Durant. No words honestly, she said after watching the video message. Stevens said she is ready to help the Wings on the defensive end of the court where they struggled last year. “I think it’s something I’ve always been See DALLAS WINGS, page 15
Starbucks arrests show implicit bias is hiding in plain sight Marc H. Morial President and CEO National Urban League
“Those of us who bear the brunt of racial bias and oppression every day end up having to not only battle that bias and oppression, but also convince everyone else that it even exists. It is very hard for the majority of the population to see how the everyday businesses, agencies, and organizations that we interact with are perpetrating harmful racial bias, and even harder for the majority of the population to see how they are perpetrating harmful racial bias themselves. Fifty Years Later, Fair Housing Act recognized as factor in fighting housing discrimination By Christopher G. Cox
(Publisher/Managing Editor, realesavvy.com)
Christopher G. Cox
One of the signature achievements of the Civil Rights Era was the passage by Congress in April of 1968 of the Fair Housing Act (FHA), also known as Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968. Looking back on this historic legislative accomplishment, Majurial “MJ” Watkins, president of the Charlotte Crown Realist Association (CCRA), said that the FHA
clearly played a role in helping to make certain that minority buyers and renters would not be discriminated against by sellers, landlords and financial institutions. “While we acknowledge that the Fair Housing Act has helped to prevent discrimination in housing,” Watkins said, “there is still work to be done.” Unfortunately, she added, some potential Black homeowners are still being treated unfairly in the housing market. The CCRA is local chapter of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) and counts among its members professionals in virtually every sector of real estate, including brokers, mortgage originators, real estate attorneys, appraisers and many others. “Our focus extends well beyond the city of Charlotte,” Watkins explained, “to include neighborhoods throughout greater Charlotte and even to nearby
Federal Injunction to Stop Vote on Prohibiting Renaming of Confederate Streets The Commemoration Committee to Honor Marvin Crenshaw and Roy Williams, an organization advocating for the renaming of Marilla St. to M.E. Crenshaw Blvd, will file a federal injunction on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. The injunction specifically seeks to halt the upcoming vote to prohibit the renaming of Confederate streets, scheduled before the Dallas City Council on April 25, 2018. Agenda Item #34(2), if passed, would prevent the renaming of streets associated with the confederacy. It would also direct the City Manager to procure services for the demolition and removal of The Confederate Monument located in Pioneer Cemetery; and authorize payment for the removal of the monument, as well as the sale of the Robert E Lee statue taken down last year, which the Committee supports. Marilla St., home to Dallas City Hall, is named for the mother of W. C. Young, a Chaplain in the Arkansas regiment of the Confederate Army who served alongside war criminal W. L. communities such as Rock Hill, which is in South Carolina.” Watkins credits the FHA with playing a significant role in helping African American home ownership reach an all-time high of 49 percent in the period between 2004 and 2005. “Unfortunately, since then it has fallen to about 42 percent,” Watkins said. That’s why her organization continues to emphasize education, financing and other resources, she added. CCRA’s mission is to create “Democracy in Housing” with a goal of increasing Black home ownership by 2 million in the next five years. “Ultimately,” Watkins said, “our vision is to see Black wealth rebuilt through home ownership.” James Perry, president and CEO of the Winston-Salem Urban League, also said that he believes that the FHA has played an important role in fighting housing discrimination, but like Wat-
kins, Perry said that even 50 years after its passage discrimination remains a problem. “In fact,” Perry said, “if you measure discrimination by how many segregated communities there are in the United States now compared to how many there were 50 years ago, there hasn’t been much progress.” He noted that in most cities many neighborhoods remain largely Black, largely Latino or largely White. While there might be less overt discrimination today, Perry said, it is more difficult for minorities to know when they are being subtly discriminated against. He pointed to the importance of a Supreme Court case (Havens Realty Corp. v. Coleman) decided in 1982 that made it easier to determine when discrimination exists by allowing fair housing organizations to send in “testers.” This is a practice whereby individuals with similar backgrounds, but

Creating a protected class of streets designed to honor and protect Confederate War Criminals, their associates, and Pro- Slavery White Supremacists, is in opposition to everything the City of Dallas and its residents stand for. The Committee continues on in the spirit of justice and equality by honoring the only living plaintiff of a federal lawsuit that ended Dallas' discriminatory at-large voting system. Marvin E. Crenshaw fought to give all minorities in Dallas a voice in the electoral process, and won. The 14-1 system we all function under now, is a testament to his dedication to justice and equality. The Committee will gather at the Northwest corner of Marilla St. and Akard St. Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 11 a.m. to further discuss developments of the filing.

of different races, answer ads for properties for sale or rent. When minorities are declined, or are offered less attractive terms than Whites, “testing” can help to support a case for discrimination. Perry noted that a strong impetus for the passage of the FHA in 1968 was the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., just days before the act was passed by Congress. “Dr. King had been a strong supporter of the Fair Housing Act, openly pushing for it in Chicago in 1967,” Perry said. “Some politicians viewed voting for the act as a way to quell the riots that erupted in the wake of his assassination.” Christopher G. Americans, Hispanics and Jews – all of whom are referenced with slurs. It doesn’t get any more explicit than that. Implicit bias doesn’t advertise itself as blatantly. It doesn’t wear a hood and burn a cross. Unlike explicit bias, implicit bias has many defenders who fail to see it for what it is. Last year, the United States Supreme Court reversed the death sentence of a defendant after the defendant's attorney introduced evidence that suggested the defendant would be more likely to commit violent acts in the future because he was black. As I wrote at the time the case

was being argued: The false belief that black people are inherently more dangerous than other races has obvious and injurious implications in criminal justice proceedings. Large segments of society, our economy and countless individuals are harmed when this myth of black dangerousness is validated. The idea of an innate black tendency to violence is a malignant, centuries-old belief that continues to impact America, undermining freedom, individuality and opportunity. This false belief – this implicit bias - is not only what led to the arrest of the two young men in Starbucks, it is behind the tragic deaths of far too many young men and boys, from Travon Martin and Tamir Rice to Philando Castile and John Crawford.

Studies indicate that 70% of Americans harbor implicit racial bias against black people. It infects our interactions at every level of society. Even preschoolers are not immune – Black children make up 20 percent of preschool students, but half those who are suspended. Implicit bias is reinforced by the media – for example, while about half of people arrested by the New York Police Department for violent crime are Black; they are represented as suspects in 75 percent of the cases shown on evening tv news coverage. Starbucks decision to close its stores for a day of implicit bias training is well-intentioned, but it cannot be an isolated effort. We hope it is the beginning of a national awakening to an issue that has hidden in plain sight for far too long.

If it’s April‌Happy Court-versary!!!
Quit Playin’ By Vincent L. Hall If it’s early spring or Commissioner John Wiley Price’s birth month; April, his name has to be on a court case somewhere. In a flawed federal lawsuit involving redistricting and discrimination against Whites, the Dallas Morning News detailed this April’s court battle featuring Price. “John Wiley Price is one of North Texas’ most identifiable civil rights activists. During his years inside and outside government, he’s boldly advocated for blacks getting a bigger share of jobs and contracts, even protesting in front of media companies in favor of more diversity. During a federal trial this week involving allegations that the county discriminates against white voters, Price was described by a witness as a racist, using his 2011 ‘All of you are white. Go to hell’ rant at a county commissioner’s court meeting as evidence. It’s part of a strategy by plaintiffs’ lawyers to depict the county commissioner’s court, with Price the ringleader, as a body that seeks to erode the influence of white residents. Predatory lending is the tip of the iceberg
By DR. JULIANNE MALVEAUX
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is supposed to “protect” consumers from fraud and predatory lending. But since 45 has ruled the roost, he has empowered exploiters to extract too much money from consumers. And he has exposed himself to implicit bribes, which is why the Consumer Financial Services Association of America was meeting at the Trump National Doral Golf Club from Tuesday April 17 to Thursday April 19, 2018. The payday lenders, who describe themselves as the “small dollar credit industry, offer loans at an annualized interest rate of as high as 600 percent, have been lobbying to loosen regulations against their industry. As they met in Florida, they focused on the fact that the Florida state legislature had planned to allow them to lend more, at higher interest rates, in the interest of exploiting more poor people,
From the Capitol by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson It is difficult to watch a television news program or read a newspaper without experiencing the horrors of wars, and rumors of wars in our world. From Nigeria to Nepal, from the Middle East to the Korean Peninsula, from Venezuela to Ukraine nations are deeply unsettled, and prepared to resolve conflict with instruments of war that would bring about the end of life as we know it. It need not be that way. Often,
mostly Black and Brown folks. I went to Orlando and Miami as the guest of the National Faith and Credit Roundtable; a group of religious leaders who are disturbed about the many ways payday lenders are able to exploit poor people. The stories they tell are harrowing – about a woman who borrowed $500 to fix her car so that she could go to medical appointments, and then found herself paying more than $6000 – 12 times the amount she borrowed—over 2 years, and still needing intervention to stop her enormous payment. I went to hear ministers use the Bible to talk about the many ways that usury is seen as an abject sin. I went to Orlando and Miami because I wanted to bear witness to the work “woke” pastors are doing to forward the agenda of social and economic justice. If this were only about Florida, it might not merit my attention. But Florida is Missouri, is New Mexico, is Nevada, is California, is Wisconsin, is Michigan. Each of these states have very loose regulations for payday lenders, which means that folks
are charging as much as 600 percent for these “small dollar” loans. The challenge is that desperate people go “small dollar’ but offer their car, their next paycheck, or even their home, as collateral. If the payday lender can go into your bank account to pay, all your other bills stand in the back of the line. How to close the gap? Take out another payday loan, and another, and another. Your small $500 loan grows exponentially. And nobody is looking out for you. So the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau offered a rule to curb in payday lenders. And now, with the 45-inspired leadership, CBFB is considering rescinding the consumer-protective rule. This isn’t the only way that CPFB has been curtailed from protecting consumers. In 2013, CPFB issued guidance about the legal risks of dealer markups and the ways that discrimination pushed Black and Hispanic folks into higher interest rate loans than their white counterparts. Toyota, Honda, Ally Financial and others were sued because borrowers of color paid much higher interest rates than their white
counterparts. Now, there is a move to repeal the 2013 rule, just like the move to repeal the predatory lending rule. It will take the Senate to repeal the consumer protecting rules, but the sentiment is not to protect consumers. In state after state, there is a sentiment to make it easier for payday lenders to exploit. And in state after state, there are those who would make it easier for the CPFB to relax rules against discrimination in lending. These payday lenders are tricksters. They call themselves the “Consumer Financial Services Association”, wording amazingly close to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. They push themselves out as an industry association that manages “best practices” in “small dollar lending”. They engage in the most pernicious form of lobbying, even purchasing the support of “civil rights leaders’ who argue that people have “the right’ to enter into financial enslavement. And their high-rolling golf games at a Trump resort is a wink and a nod to the many ways this administration is ripping off

war and its ugly aftermaths are caused by wrong-headed decisions made during moments of bewilderment by government and individuals. I remain proud that I was among those in Congress that voted against our country’s invasion of Iraq in 2003. Our invention led to the destabilization of the Middle East, and chaos that still confronts us 14 years later. And while the world appears to be in turmoil because of conflicts, we must never cease our struggle to find equitable and lasting peace. Women will play, and have played, crucial roles in our pursuit of a world free from conflicts that threatened our existence. Women, who bring life into the world, have more than a casual interest in conflict resolution.
Research by peace advocates has shown that the involvement of women in efforts to bring about peace is critical , and often times leads to a quicker resolution of

likely to succeed than those where the dominant players are men, researchers have concluded. History is replete with incidences of peaceful solutions to war in which were involved in seeking peace. It was the involvement of women in a brutal years-long war in Liberia that brought about an end to that horrific conflict. In South Africa, the end of apartheid was hastened, in part, by the role of women, including those from the African National Congress and the Black Sash. poor people. The new leadership of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency has been pressured to relax payday-lending rules. Several states have bowed to the pressure to support the payday lender that exploit low-income, mostly Black and Brown, communities. In Florida and Michigan, and in other states, there are harrowing stories of people being exploited because payday lenders have a legislative pass. This flies in the face of the notion that the poor should be protected from extreme usury, but it is perfectly consistent with the focus of this corrupt administration. So who will take care of consumers who face discriminatory interest rates, predatory lending and more? Perhaps voters will throng to the polls in November to elect a Congress dedicated to providing protection for consumers!

Living with dementia
Dear Alma, I need advice to help my beloved sister who has dementia. I don’t know how to communicate with her anymore. We were once very close. She was talented and had a lot of friends. She sang in the choir and was active in her church. Now she has trouble remembering words and speaking in complete sentences. She won’t take a shower or comb her hair. I just don’t know what to do. What would you suggest? Diane Jackson, Woodbridge, Va. Dear Diane, I’m sorry to hear about your sister’s decline. It’s heartbreaking to watch as a loved one slips away. You’re not only dealing with the horrible disease of dementia, you’re dealing also with the loss of the sister you know her to be. My sister died many years ago and I still, to this day, have not recovered. Neither will you. But what you can do is this:
Put on your “big sister” T-shirt, even if you are the little sister, like me, and fight this battle to win. Give your sister what she needs and not what you want her to have. Don’t determine your decisions around the sister she used to be, but deliver what’s necessary based on the sister she is today. If she loved music, turn on the radio. Read to her, especially the Bible. Sit and watch TV together, cartoons, game shows, PBS specials. Talk to her, not at her, while you’re watching. When she repeats her sentences, act as if it’s the first time you’ve heard those words. Don’t rush her when she’s speaking or finish her sentences. Let her be. When it comes to her hygiene, you can bathe her. Don’t ask her if she wants a bath, run the water and tell her it’s ready. When it comes to her hair, take her to the salon or sit her at the dining room table and go old-skool…you braid her hair (I know you know how.) Ask her to hold the extra brush while you’re doing it. That will take her mind off what you’re doing. The days of your sister making decisions are over. You’ll need to take on that role for her. Of course you’ll encounter some resistance. Just remind yourself you’re doing what’s best for her. Don’t take it personally. You’ve become her caregiver.
She’s counting on you and would do the same if the roles were reversed. I know you want to do all you can to bring your sister back and make it all better, but you can’t. She’ll continue to slip away. This isn’t by her choice, and unfortunately, she can’t help it. Sometimes as a caregiver, it’s hard to peel back the overwhelming layers of guilt and pain to see the blessing. Your blessing is you still have your sister. Trust me, once she’s gone, you’d give anything to be able to do it again. Don’t focus on what you see as yours or her shortcomings. Do your best to meet her needs. Your love for each other will never change, but you should readjust your expectations. As I’m sure you know, it’s important to keep up with doctor appointments, and it wouldn’t be a bad idea for you to find a support group. You and I know I’ve sugar coated this thing, but that’s because you’ve got a tough road ahead. We don’t know what the future holds, so when and if the doctors decide she needs more than you can handle, accept it; don’t debate or challenge it. They know what’s best. Now more than ever, enjoy your sister. This is a very small slice of the pie of life you’ve shared. Hug her often and relish the days. Alma

cause for pride," Gideon submitted a handwritten petition to the Supreme Court. In it he argued that the Constitution gave him the right to a lawyer, that this right was fundamental to achieving a fair and just result in criminal cases, and that a lack of money should not prevent someone's access to justice. The Supreme Court agreed, and Gideon won his appeal. Among other reasons, Justice Potter Stewart pointed
out that the "State of Florida wouldn't let Gideon represent anybody else," but the criminal liability is just the same. During his retrial, his newly appointed lawyer won the case, arguing to the new jury that the prosecution's chief witness was the real burglar. The jurors deliberated for just an hour before finding Gideon not guilty. He was a free man, leaving a legacy of access to justice for every person charged with a crime in this country. True fairness

MY TRUTH
continued from page 1 didates do need money to run a successful campaign. According to VoteRunLead’s website, “More women in politics creates real change, effective democracy, and better government. VoteRunLead is the expert at the state and local level. With less than 1,000 of the 520,000 US elected offices at the federal level, we are focused on the 99%. 70% of first-time VoteRunLead candidates won their election in 2017. VoteRunLead trains women not only to run for office, but to win! The main focus of VoteRunLead is recruit and train 30,000 women to run for political office, between now and 2020. Preparing women to run and win should help with the dismal numbers of 90% of elected officials are white and 71% are male. Did you know there’s also a National Run for Office Day? I like what the website www. runforofficeday.com says to people who ask “why should I run for office?” Because you can! Because you care about solving problems and doing the hard work necessary to fixing your community. Because it’s time. Because Donald Trump is president and if that bozo can work in politics, you can certainly run for city council. Because your community is counting on you. Because you’re ready to lead. Because you’re sick of the BS coming out of Washington, or your state capitol, or your city government, and you’re taking matters into your own hands. Because you want to inspire people. Because you’re inspired. Because representative democracy matters and your community is underrepresented. Because the future is yours to fight for. Because we’ll help you. (All of us.)
Now I have heard many a conversation about preparing folks to run for office, especially Black women! Surely you’ve heard of Black Girl Magic? Well there are folks scared because Black females are running and getting elected. It’s interesting that some folks are downright mad because Black women are running for office. As a result Black women have been vilified and even threatened in attempts to get them to stand down. Did I also say they have been made to feel guilty because of their political aspirations? Now that ain’t right. And if anyone has shown that you don’t have to be qualified to run for office, well, you get my drift. Then too, there are others who have not been qualified and no one asked them to stay in their lane. We should be encouraging those who want to serve. And in true fashion, we must encourage those seeking office to prepare. Yes, you need money. Yes, you need a team. Yes, you need a strategy. Yes, you probably need some media training. Yes, you probably need to visit with an image consultant. Yes, you should know what the position entails. I could go on, but you’d be better served if you contact seasoned politicians (and stop with that tired line — “I’m not a politician); check out VoteRunLead.org and other empowering organizations (too bad the parties aren’t doing a better job of preparing folks for service); and know the position and issues. And then I will join others by body rolling to the polls to cast my oh, so important vote!

I FEEL PRETTY feels pretty good Comedic actress Amy Schumer plays Renee Bennett in the hilarious new movie with a message, I FEEL PRETTY. The movie will keep you laughing from start to finish, but in the end there is a message to the comedy about women's acceptance of their own body image. In the movie Schumer's character is a "plus-sized woman" who's struggling with her image as a "big girl." To impove herself she joins a cycling class at Soul Cycle where she compares herself to the other women in the class. In an homage to the movie BIG, which
starred Tom Hanks, she goes down to the park on a stormy night and throws a coin in the fountain and wishes she was small and when she hits her head in a cycling class at Soul Cycle she thinks that her wish has comes true. Unlike the Jack Black movie, SHALLOW HAL, we never see Amy Schumer's image of how she thinks she looks, so that makes it even funnier when she strides into the office hearing music that only she hears in her head or when she strips down to her undies to enter a bikini contest in a seaside bar.
I think women will really get the message of the story, not to say that men won't enjoy the movie as well, but from the screening that I attended the woman were enjoying a bonding moment with the movie's lead character, Renee. It's an empowering movie that will have many "girls night happy hours" ending up at the film. I FEEL PRETTY is rated PG-13 for partial nudity and adult situations and has a run time of 1 hour and 50 minutes. On my 'Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate this movie a LARGE.

What a delightful interview. True to his style actor and comedian DeRay Davis will be testing the wits and pop-culture command of celebrities in the fresh new game show Hip Hop Squares second season. Ice Cube is the executive prouder of the VH1’s Hip Hop Square game show with the biggest names in Hip Hop, Comedy and Entertainment as they match wits and tests their pop culture knowledge. His other credits include SemiPro, 21 Jump Street, Reno 911, FOX’s Empire, and HBO’s Entourage. Davis lends his voice to several skits on rapper Kanye West albums. Infections could trigger stroke in pregnant women during hospital delivery By AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION NEWS
DeRay Davis
DeR: I do not think he knew I had these skills. He knew I was a comedian, and that I also had acted in Barbershop movies with him.
Pregnant women who have an infection when they enter the hospital for delivery might be at higher risk of having a stroke during their stay, according to new research. The study, published Friday in the journal Stroke, tried to determine if infections contribute to stroke risk during peripartum, a term meaning shortly before or after childbirth. While maternal strokes are rare – only about 30 of every 100,000 pregnancies – they carry a high rate of fatality. “We wanted to get a handle on this because stroke is one of the major causes of maternal mortality in this country,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Eliza Miller, an assistant professor of neurology at Columbia University Medical Center. “We wanted to see if infections could possibly trigger a stroke in a woman who doesn’t have a lot of risk factors, in the peripartum period.” Researchers studied data from nearly 2.8 million women admitted to hospitals to give birth in California, New York and Florida from 2007 to 2011 – including 455 patients who suffered a stroke during their stay. Researchers concluded the women were 1.74 times more likely to suffer a stroke if, when they were admitted, they had any type of infection, including urinary tract, gastrointestinal, respiratory, sexually transmitted, and sepsis, a life-threatening infection in the bloodstream. Miller said the women with urinary tract infections were 2.56 times as likely to suffer a stroke during their hospital stay, and those with the sepsis were 10.4 times as likely. “What’s interesting about this is the idea that inflammation in the body is somehow triggering the results,” Miller said. “It makes sense that someone who has sepsis and very high levels of inflammation would have an even higher risk.” Dr. Cheryl Bushnell, a neurologist and director of the Stroke
Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, applauded researchers for looking at the connection between inflammation and stroke among women giving birth. “The relationship between infections and stroke has become more and more recognized, and this study takes a deeper dive into inflammation as the potential trigger,” said Bushnell, who was not involved in the study. “The approach is definitely novel … analyzing a very specific population.” Both Bushnell and Miller pointed out the limitations of the study, including a lack of a clear causeand-effect relationship. “Observational studies like these don’t necessarily prove anything,” Miller said. “But it’s good for giving us clues to what’s going on here and generating ideas for future research.” Bushnell said she’d like to see broader studies done around the world on the topic, as well as research that focuses specifically on how antibiotics might reduce the risk of stroke among women giving birth. In the meantime, Miller said that although stroke is rare during pregnancy, women and their doctors should be vigilant about recognizing warning signs for a stroke. “From the doctor’s perspective, an infection should raise a little red flag, especially for those who are already are at higher risk – for example, women with preeclampsia, which is a kind of severe form of high blood pressure during pregnancy,” Miller said. “For women, it’s important not to dismiss a really bad headache or any other stroke symptoms around the time of delivery. It’s important to understand what to do if you think you’re having a stroke, which is to call 911 immediately, because with a stroke, time is of the essence.” If you have questions or comments about this story, please email editor@heart.org. www.texasmetronews.com

Howard alumnus Chadwick Boseman to deliver Commencement Address
Howard University President, Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick, announced today that actor and alumnus Chadwick Boseman will deliver the keynote address during Howard University's 150th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 12, 2018. Mr. Boseman will address members of the Class of 2018 and their families, University trustees, officers, faculty, staff, and alumni. Howard University will confer upon Mr. Boseman the University's highest honor, an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters. "It is an incredible honor and privilege for the Howard University community to welcome back home one of its native sons, Chadwick Boseman, to deliver the 2018 commencement address," said Howard University President, Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick. "He has played some of the most iconic African Americans that have transformed history, including Jackie Robinson, James Brown and Howard's own Thurgood Marshall. His recent role in the blockbuster film “Black Panther” reminds us of the excellence
found in the African diaspora and how Howard continues to be a gem that produces the next generation of artist-scholars, humanitarians, scientists, engineers and doctors. Mr. Boseman exemplifies the monumental heights and levels Howard graduates can achieve by using the skills and knowledge they acquired at the university." "I'm excited to return to the Mecca in celebration of the achievements of our illustrious students," said Boseman. "Let's listen, learn and build with one another." A native of South Carolina, Chadwick Boseman graduated from Howard University and attended the British American Dramatic Academy at Oxford, after which he began his career as an actor, director and writer. Boseman can currently be seen starring as T'Challa/Black Panther in the worldwide phenomenon Marvel Studios' "Black Panther." He made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the African superhero in Marvel Studios' "Captain America: Civil War," in May 2016. He will reprise the role

again for Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Infinity War" later this month. Boseman's breakout performance came in 2013 when he received rave reviews for his portrayal of the legendary Jackie Robinson in Warner Bros' "42" opposite Harrison Ford. Boseman received the 2014 CinemaCon Male Star of Tomorrow Award, was named one of the Top 10 Best Movie Performances of 2014 by Time Magazine and was awarded a Virtuous
Award from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival for his portrayal of James Brown in Universal Pictures' "Get on Up." He previously starred in the title role of Open Road Films' "Marshall" alongside Josh Gad. The film tells the story of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court Justice, as he battles through one of his career-defining cases as the Chief Counsel to the NAACP. His other feature film credits include: the revenge thriller "Message from the King," Summit Entertainment's "Draft Day" opposite Kevin Costner, independent psychological post-war drama "The Kill Hole" and Gary Fleders' drama "The Express." Boseman and his writing partner, Logan Coles, a fellow Howard alum, have written the script for Universal Pictures' "Expatriate," an international thriller set around a 1970s plane hijacking. Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) has recently signed on to direct the project, in which Boseman will star. "We are extremely pleased that
