MY TRUTH
By Cheryl Smith Publisher
#SeatSnatch2018
My Thursday nights are enhanced by viewing a 30-minute show, The Rundown with Robin Thede on BET. Not only is the show entertainRobin Thede ing; it is enlightening and informative. She says what many think but don’t have the platform or, in some cases, the guts; to say! For those who are not familiar with this young lady, let me tell you, she is far from an overnight sensation. She has more than paid her dues on the way to becoming only the 5th African American female to be host of a late-night TV talk show in America. With a degree in Broadcast Journalism and African-American Studies from Northwestern University, Ms. Thede has cut her teeth in the industry and has an extensive and impressive portfolio. As her first season of The Rundown with Robin Thede came to a close, the focus and not for the first time, centered around black women running and getting elected to office. Actress/activist Erika Alexander joined her for the show. Have you heard of #SeatSnatch2018 or #VoteRunLead? Well Ms. Thede knows what she is talking about. After all, her mom is Iowa State Representative Phyllis Thede. And Ms. Alexander, who serves as a board member of RunVoteLead, was presented with a nice check, so the work can continue. Ms. Thede also pointed out that the canSee TRUTH, page 9

I’m just excited to get there and work with the team and the staff,â€? said the University of Connecticut standout. “It’s honestly just surreal. I’ve dreamed of this moment since I picked up a basketball, so for it to actually be

the congrats she received from NBA star Kevin Durant who pre-recorded a video message for Stevens. She has said in interviews that she modeled her game after Durant, and was truly stunned by the message from the former MVP on arguably the biggest night of her life. “Oh my God. Holy crap. That was Kevin Durant. No words honestly, she said after watching the video message. Stevens said she is ready to help the Wings on the defensive end of the court where they struggled last year. “I think it’s something I’ve always been See DALLAS WINGS, page 15
Starbucks arrests show implicit bias is hiding in plain sight Marc H. Morial President and CEO National Urban League
“Those of us who bear the brunt of racial bias and oppression every day end up having to not only battle that bias and oppression, but also convince everyone else that it even exists. It is very hard for the majority of the population to see how the everyday businesses, agencies, and organizations that we interact with are perpetrating harmful racial bias, and even harder for the majority of the population to see how they are perpetrating harmful racial bias themselves. It is hard to see how something that can feel like the air you breathe to most,

can be the storm you drown in to others. -- Ijeoma Oluo The arrest of two young Black men at a Philadelphia
Starbucks sparked widespread protest and has ignited a national conversation about the issue of implicit bias and how to combat it. As a sort of contrast, around the same time as the Starbucks arrest, a fraternity at Syracuse University was suspended over racist, sexist and homophobic videos recorded in the fraternity house and posted to a fraternity Facebook group. The videos show members pledging always to “have hatred in my heart for African See STARBUCKS, page 3
