When they say we can’t, tell them: DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE
When you have a good thing, you’d better hold on to it and treat it right. Isn’t that the recurring theme in a number of “love� songs? In preparation for the 24th annual Cheryl Smith’s Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowla-thon there were some moments of hesitancy. You see, in 1995 at the first scholarship fundraisers, comedian/activist/ humanitarian/ nutritionist and all around Dick Gregory good person Dick Gregory stood by my side encouraging people to support my efforts. Along with rap group Public Enemy’s Chuck D. and Malik Farrakhan, Mr. Gregory graciously donated his time to the cause. Actress Ptosha Storey to appear The cause is my truth. As a talk show host on at bowl-a-thon Soul 73 KKDA, I talked to a lot of listeners. Many needed help. I didn’t have a lot of money but I thought it would be great to reach out to friends and colleagues, asking them to come out and have a good time raising money to help students go to college. Minority contractors hold national meeting in Plano

The metroplex is hosting the 49th Annual National Association of Minority Contractors (NAMC) Conference in Dallas, June 13-15, 2018 at the Marriott Legacy in Plano. Founded in Oakland, California in 1969 by Raymond Dones and Joseph Debro, NAMC is the oldest minority construction trade association in the United States with over 50 Hall of Fame members and Legacy Builders and an annual project capacity of over one billion dollars nationally. Through a network of local chapters and in collaboration with strategic and corporate partnerships, NAMC assists members with building capacity by providing access to opportunity, advocacy, and contractor development training. Conference co-chairs are Demetria Bivens of dlb Consultants and Jan Prisby Bryson of BenchMark Management, LLC. Annie’s List names Brooks Exec Director The Board of Directors of Annie’s List recent announcement that Royce Brooks has been named as its new Executive Director brought expressions of praise from Royce Brooks across the state. Her father, Tarrant County Commissioner Roy Brooks wrote on his Facebook page, “So very proud of my daughter!� Ms. Brooks, a visionary leader who most recently served as the first Chief Equity Officer for the City of Atlanta, and whose political experience includes the campaigns of Wendy Davis and Sylvester Turner, will lead the organization beginning in July. She is a graduate of Rice University and Harvard Law School, and a sixth generation Texan. Board Chair Heidi Gerbracht says Ms. Brooks is the perfect choice to lead Annie’s List. “We couldn’t be more thrilled about welcoming Royce back to Texas,� Gerbracht shared. “There is so much energy to elect great women candidates right now.
