For those who think they can navigate through this world without collaborations, well to them, I say, “more power to you!� For me, I don’t feel the need to reinvent the wheel or act as though I am the only one capable of performing some function. On the Pathways Out of Poverty Listening Tour, House Democrats are traveling to communities to hear di-

rectly from Americans seeking better job opportunities and economic stability, as well as stakeholders who are working to alleviate poverty. In Dallas, the Members visited three sites developing innovative solutions to reduce poverty and expand opportunity, including Bonton Farms, Jubilee Community Center Tour, and Promise House. Launched in 2013, the Democratic Whip Task Force on Poverty, Income Inequality,

and Opportunity works to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis of poverty, the positive human and economic impacts of effective poverty alleviation programs, and the need for a comprehensive national effort to eradicate poverty. The Task Force consults with key stakeholders to develop support for strategies to eradicate poverty and build opposition to proposed cuts to anti-poverty programs by the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans.

Erica Simon

Erica Simon describes her years at Duncanville High School as some of the best times in her life. “I feel like it’s just a special district,� Ms. Simon said. The 31-year-old spent her entire educational career in Duncanville and has fond memories playing volleyball and softball and being elected president of the high school’s chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Ms. Simon is now an anchor and reporter at ABC13 in Houston, the eighth largest television market in the United States. She pursued a journalism degree after graduating from Duncanville High School in 2004. An active member of the National Association of Black Journalists, she has not forgotten where she came from, and she posted a video on her Twitter feed during a trip to Duncanville during the holidays reminiscing about her memories from Duncanville High School. “There’s something nostalgic about seeing my old stomping grounds,� Simon said. “I was very blessed to have a great upbringing with great people around me.� Ms. Simon still keeps in contact with several of her favorite high school teachers including a former math teacher and See SIMON, page 6 www.texasmetronews.com
