n assignment I gave my summer intern was to write a message to the freshman class at her school. As I read over her suggestions, I thought about how the more things change, the more things actually stay the same. There are some age-old lessons that, no matter what century, appear to be worthy of listening to and learning from. My intern wanted incoming freshmen to value themselves and to not “go crazy just because they may be experiencing freedom for the first time in their lives. She wanted her classmates, especially the females, to avoid sex at all cost because according to her, none of the male students are looking for a relationship. They just want to have a good time. My message to young women going off to college is simple. When young men try to talk to See TRUTH, page 5

When the Dallas City Council called for a special election to fill the unexpired term of former Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway, who represented District 4, there was speculation that there would be a few contenders. Well when the August 23, 2018 deadline for candidates to file to run passed, there were well more than a few as the number finally settled at 13.

Brandon J. Vance, Vincent T. Parker, Becky Lewis, Obi E. Igbokwe, Dawn M. Blair, Lester Houston, Jr., Joli Angel Robinson, Corwyn M. Davis, Justina Walford, Donald Washington, Kebran W. Alexander, Keyaira D. Saunders and former District 4 Councilwoman Carolyn King Arnold will be listed on the ballot, in this exact order. Dubbed the “baker’s dozen, the candidates are expected to

bring a boost to the polls and may impact the other elections by bringing out voters that may have been staying away from the polls. The group is expected to participate in the Monday Night Politics Forum, sponsored by the Dallas Examiner, tentatively scheduled for September 10, 2018 on www. dallasexaminer. com. From the Capitol By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Senator John McCain and I were residents in the same condominium building in the suburbs of Northern Virginia near Capitol Hill. It was indeed a blessing to be his colleague and neighbor. On the elevator in our building or in the halls of Congress, Senator McCain was a “gentleman legislator” who had a genuine concern for the well-being of others, and for the progress of the world and its people. At the core of Senator McCain’s character was a sense of goodness and grace. During an epic moment during the 2008 presidential campaign, when a supporter charged that his opponent, Senator Barack Obama, was an “Arab,” Senator McCain politely shook his head and said, “No, he is a decent family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fun-

John Wiley Price was on trial again and you never knew it. This one didn’t involve a sexy FBI raid. This court battle could sell neither newspapers nor ad time during television commercial breaks. The charge John Wiley Price et al faced this time was too complex for a few sound bytes and too complicit for the Dallas elite who control the “mainstream media outlets. The headline would have been too much. “John Wiley Price is an Afro-pessimist!!! If that didn’t send shivers down your spine, nothing about Case 3:15-CV-00131-D; Ann Harding v. Dallas County would have. Let me mimic the old Black Preacher as he came to close his sermon. “Let me cut across the field. If you understand Old Black church protocol you know that I’m about to hoop, hum and have my seat. This case, brought with the good graces of the Republican Party, alleged that Price and others violated the voting rights of White people in Dallas County. A Commissioner’s Court that used to be 4-1 Republican is now 4-1 Democrat. An Afro-pessimist like John Wiley Price must be the culprit! The Dallas Morning News offered

Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price and Henry Brown bers as enablers of intolerance. In the meeting, Price was hounded by supporters of (Bruce) Sherbet, the former elections administrator who resigned after Price and Jenkins attempted to oust him. When Price noticed that the public speakers against him were white, he cracked: “All of you are white, followed by “Go to hell. Lovell testified that those comments, along with Price once dubbing Dickey “Honey Boo Boo, were

frequently referring to Price as Dallas County’s “chief mullah, a racially-charged term. Price has said the “chief mullah references led to his rant at the meeting. Incidentally, one of the reasons that “Honey Boo Boo is “Barbeque Barbie full-time now is because she approved a final copy of the map, to the dismay of her GOP colleague; Mike Cantrell. What she didn’t realize was that the numbers had been changed. District 1 was now District 2

and vice-versa. Karma is hell!! In that same redistricting plan, Price carved off some of his best voters to create a district for Dallas County Hispanics who were long overdue. In doing so, he picked up some areas to his East that could have cost him the large margins he’s enjoyed since 1984 and possibly a loss. “Harding v. John Price was typical backroom Dallas politics. The GOP had their day and so have the Democrats, but, to coin Barack Obama; “Elections have consequences. That is why it is so important that Democrats gain momentum in 2018 and over-perform in 2020. See, you introduce a subject and then go off on a different tangent, which causes the audience to listen for the end. Afro-pessimism in short, is more common than you would imagine. “Broadly, it refers to a sense of pessimism about the continent’s (Africa) ability to overcome pressing challenges related to poverty, health, development or governance. This concept will often be summoned in the discussions around Africa’s image in Western media. Afro-pessimism attacks coverage that is reductive, negative or grounded in colonial tropes of Africans worldwide. PERSPECTIVES

Sweet revenge – Decline and Fall of Bob McCulloch The Last Word By Dr. Julianne Malveaux

Just over four years ago, on August 9, 2014, 18-year-old Michael Brown was murdered by police officer Darren Wilson. He was shot six times, and might have survived some of the shots, but was fatally wounded by a bullet in the head. Wilson claimed he shot in self-defense, but Michael Brown was unarmed. Prosecutor Bob McCulloch took his time convening a grand jury and announced in November, three months after Brown’s murder, that the grand jury voted not to indict Wilson. Critics say that McCullough manipulated the grand jury process to protect Darren Wilson. But now he has his comeuppance. The 27-year prosecutor was defeated by Wesley Bell, an African American attorney and member of the Ferguson City Council. Bell seems quite the opposite of the racially biased McCullough, a prosecutor who incarcerated poor African Americans for minor offenses. McCullough and the Ferguson police

While he has the potential to continue to damage the lives of many individuals, his loss is sweet revenge. Wesley Bell, who has no Republican opponent for November’s race, has the opportunity to model what criminal justice can look like when a progressive leader is making prosecution decisions. Perhaps Wesley Bell’s win will encourage the Real Justice PAC to seek out candidates in other cities – their work, so far, has focused on California, Texas, and the St. Louis race. People of color in many urban areas, however, face injustice when biased prosecutors act on their biases with their “prosecutorial discretion.” Police officers, too, use their prejudices to decide when to charge and when not to. Unconscious bias is a benign word for racism, and it is rife in the criminal justice system. Electing better prosecutors is a first step toward reversing some of this, so I applaud the work of the Real Justice PAC. But there is so much more that must be done before we experience equal justice.

you, be courteous and respectful, but tell them upfront, “It was nice talking with you but please understand, I am here for two things: a degree and a husband!” Now some might say I am telling them to be a gold digger, but that is not the case. That statement alone will send most young men running because many are not looking for anything permanent. Ladies, be mindful however, your actions have to mirror the words coming out of their mouths. You have to stay focused! Unfortunately, just as when I went to college, there are many young men and women who are ill-prepared for the college experience and, had no one to help them. Thanks to shows, however, like the most-recently cancelled The Quad on BET and back in the day “A Different World,” there was a realistic look at some of the issues college students must face. Then too, sometimes we can be hard-headed and end up dealing with issues that we had been forewarned about.

Parents have to have candid talks with our children about the college experience. There’s a whole lot more than math, science and technology. And there is so much more than alcohol, sex and marijuana. Which brings me to my truth. As a freshman at Florida A&M University, I was in love. Sure there were other guys trying to get to know me, but I wasn’t looking twice and he knew that. He was far more advanced than I and so we didn’t last through our freshman year. Looking back, I have to say I was lucky. There were a number of upperclassmen who looked out for me. They gave me advice and probably sent out a few warnings. I did hear the horror stories about occurrences at parties, young ladies spending the night at fraternity houses and some going home for the break and never returning because they were pregnant. My freshman year was traumatic because one of my roommates just had to have her boyfriend in the room with us. I didn’t know what to do because she was a big-time junior and I was a lowly freshman.

Her boyfriend was there when I went to bed and when I left for class in the morning. And to make matters worse, there were two things that were disturbing to me: they had no problem having sex in front of me while I studied, and they would fight almost every night. Their dysfunctional relationship was very new to me. I wasn’t used to men and women fighting and the closest thing I knew of resembling what I glimpsed as I escaped the room in the midst of their sordid acts had to be what I read on the pages of my Harlequin Romances. Eventually I began sleeping on the couch because the panting and huffing and puffing was a bit much. I understand why freshman weren’t supposed to be in those on-campus apartments. This freshman was not ready. AT ALL! Then something happened. It seemed that one of the roommates in the other bedroom wanted her “man” to stay the night also, but the 4th roommate wasn’t having it. So roommate number 3 would bring her “man” out into the dining area to get their thing on. Talk about a dilemma! Where was I to go to

get away from the sex? I don’t know what happened to roommate #4 but if I saw her today I would give her a big hug. Many a night I would get up from the couch, and take my pillow and blanket and go into the room with Mary. She was a graduating senior who was much older. She was 26 to my 18. I kept asking her to encourage the two who wanted to have sex to share a room. Eventually she advocated for me and I was able to have a healthier living environment. Everyone needs an advocate, someone to look out for them during a crucial time. It would have been so easy for me to fall into the same acts as roommate number 2 and we could have had an orgy going on. Instead I refused to go along. Everyone is not that fortunate. Peer pressure is real. My message to upperclass students: become an advocate/mentor to a freshman, or anyone you see going astray. Guide them. Your efforts could be life-altering or life-saving! www.texasmetronews.com

To the incoming college freshmen of 2018 By Jessica Hayden Dear Freshmen, Congratulations on starting a new chapter of your life by going to college. I know you are eager to be away from home, but remember to make smart decisions. College is about exploring the unknown about your yourself, friendships, joining organizations, and so much more. You have your future right in front of you so hold onto it and make each day great since the University you chose is your home for the next four years. There are a few things you need to know like: Choose Your Friends Wisely Operate in Positivity Stay Organized Put in the work! Keep God first Following these five steps will keep you on the right path to success. Even joining the honor society for your major would look great on your resume. You will need to have a 3.30 or higher to get accepted into any honors society so make sure to have A’s and B’s in all your classes. I know it is hard but you can do anything you set your mind to. No matter how big the task is you got it. Never rely on others to believe in your vision because they won’t understand you can do it. For example, if you decide to apply for a leadership role that is different from what you’re use to doing, go for it. Never be afraid to step outside the box. If you want something you never had, you must do something you’ve never done before. However, before stepping up for a leadership role you should be very involved in the organization to learn the ropes for the position. Also, do not just join organizations for your major venture off into organizations that are fun. What you do not need to be doing? Plus, when you start to work harder at your future goals you could land a mentor for the four years. The best part about having a mentor is the bonds you will form. What a mentor does is guide you through college obstacles and career goals you have for yourself. They will always be able to teach you more skills to boost your level of thinking critically about things. They usually are good at giving you tough love because it is necessary to prepare you for the real world that is ahead of you. Learn how to take professional criticism from. Lastly, show your mentor that you appreciate them in any small way or big way because they did not have to mentor you but they did. I hope these tools for surviving college help you to be the best student you can. Remember to never let anyone bring you down. Jessica Hayden Senior, Prairie View A&M University

TLC for teen girls, continued from front page

TLC Participants but who may express their regrets of not being connected to character building, non-profit organizations such as Treasured Ladies Club(TLC). Founded by Ordained Minister and Corporate/Motivational Speaker June Evans in 1999, TLC, was birthed out of a need for teen girls desiring more conversations regarding dating, sex, and relationships. Initial meetings began at Connally High School in Waco, Texas, when Ms. Evans would drive from Dallas up to three times a week to provide character and leadership development sessions to adolescent girls on campus. After servicing this school for three years, she would then transition her organizational efforts to the DFW Metroplex, collaborating with the Dallas Housing Authority, other non-profit organizations, and local churches and their youth groups. TLC currently has two active chapters in Cedar Hill and Duncanville ISD. This academic year, Ms. Evans plans to develop an additional chapter for young ladies, to meet on the weekends. TLC executes its mission of “effecting change in young girls by renewing their minds and restoring values” in various ways. One avenue is through mentoring...addressing topics that range from decision making skills, healthy relationships, to dating violence and self-defense. The goal of this component is to change “their outlook on life while fostering the female dynamic and special bond that girls must have with one another and adult women in order to be successful.” In addition, Ms. Evans said, “No man is an island. Teens should be open to friendship and diverse friendships. Make sure you are in character development programs that will hold you acwww.texasmetronews.com

countable and responsible and will help build your character.” HIV/AIDS awareness is another component. Each year, the club orchestrates campaigns….sexual health amongst domestic violence and dating are issues which time is devoted. “These campaigns bring about community awareness that can also be global awareness,” she explained. The most recent campaign was titled: I’m in Control. This interactive program empowered young girls 9-12th to say, “YES to their dreams, YES to their goals, and YES to a future WITHOUT HIV/AIDS.” The program concluded, honoring a hero in the fight against HIV/AIDS, while also highlighting the importance of the being tested for STDs and celebrating those students who participated. Corporate tours are fun and engaging activities incorporated into the programming. The pairing of social and educational environments allows the girls to explore career opportunities in various fields to make sound decisions regarding their future. Outings in the past have included: tours at Mary Kay Cosmetics, Mercedes Benz Financial, George W. Bush Presidential Center, and major city tours such as New York City. TLC exposes the young ladies to the arts, fine dining and other ventures they may have never experienced otherwise. Participating in the aforementioned endeavors not only builds character and accountability but stability for her students. “We meet on a weekly basis, in a group instead of one-on-one,” continued Ms. Evans. “Here we are able to connect, collaborate, and bounce issues off one another. Peer to peer relationships create conversations. We

are uniquely different but here for each other.” What’s Next and How Can You Help? Marching into its 20th year, the organization’s participants graduate at 100%, with 99% completing higher education. She said these stats speak to “what mentorship can do.” “It takes dollars to mentor girls. We are doing a fantastic job but would do 100% better if we had more partnerships. I would like to track the success of my students from high school through college, with financial support.” The club is also soliciting volunteers who would boost social media presence, website creators, and newsletter writers. Her desire, she said, is to identify volunteers who can work more behind the scenes to make the club more visible. In years to come, she would like to see the organization expand to empower middle and high school girls across the city. TLC plans to continue delivering on its promise of helping teen girls “become socially and financially competent individuals who are prepared for life.” Currently under development, Ms. Evans is building a mother and daughter component to the organization. She said she believes in the importance of bridging this vital relationship before going to college and plans to support a number of mother/daughter team building activities throughout the school year. Unlike the opening vignette where the young impressionable teen was detached from mentorship and accountability with peers who were dealing with similar issues, Treasured Ladies Club provides opportunities for teen girls to connect and to make more constructive decisions which may alter the trajectory of their lives. Added, Ms. Evans, “It is my belief that girls will give us their best if we give them our best.” And her stance regarding teens is to “love them and lead them to better” or as one of her pastor mentors, Mike Hayes, would say, “Love them where they are and lead them to where they are going.” If you are interested in volunteering or are a parent of a teen girl interested in applying to become a part of the club, visit treasuredladiesclub.org. The website also allows for donations, as the club is raising funds to purchase a 29-passenger bus.

Similar to the State of Georgia, lobbyists will be required to wear a badge that identifies them as a registered lobbyist. Dear Alma,

This woman is vicious

My wife is vicious with a capital “V!” We were married for eight years and over that time had two sons. She did everything imaginable. She lied to me, stole from me and manipulate me. Here are a few examples. She stole money from her employer, lied to her family and said I was abusing her. She also had several affairs and called the police and tried to have me arrested under false pretenses. It was absolutely insane. Finally, she walked out on us and I raised my two boys alone. Both are young men now 21 and 23. I never remarried, just worked hard and devoted my time to my boys. Luckily my sister and my mom helped out and the boys are very well rounded and doing just fine. I can’t say that however about my ex. She continued her shenanigans and ended up in and out of jail. She just recently resurfaced and isn’t doing well. She has AIDS and is asking my son to help her out. He just finished college and is barely making it on his own. He’s determined to help his mom and, from what his brother tells me, is giving her $200 a month. You know what that means? He’s short every month and I’m have to replenish that $200 so that he can make ends meet. Which means I’m giving the woman who took me through Hell money every month. I’m pissed and don’t think I can take it much longer. I

Signed, What Goes Around Dear What Goes Around, Wow, that’s a tough situation you were able to maneuver. I’m sure it was heartbreaking and not what you expected when you said, “I do.” God bless you, Big Papa, for stepping up and taking care of your boys. I’m sure they are growing into fine, young men with the love and examples they learned from you. Yep, you did right. That’s why your son is helping his mother. Don’t be mad at him. sorrow and asked him for forgiveness. You’d be surprised what we can say right before death comes knocking. He’s had a tough time. You’ve always been there for him; don’t stop now. If it’s not a hardship, keep funneling the money. God is using you to be a blessing to your ex and a blessing to your son. I know it’s hard, but there’s so much more in store for you on the other side — the other side of this difficult circumstance. He won’t have his mother long, but he’ll always have the memory of how much his father, when faced with inexcusable circumstances, was always able to rise and stand tall as the man who took the high road. Let this one silently play out. When your time comes to be parked in the tough lane, and it will come, you’ll be overwhelmed by the river of blessings that will flow. Larger than anything you could have ever imagined or prayed for. Don’t consume your thoughts about our ex, support your son, all the way to the end. He’s gonna need you and you will have provided him with a clean conscious, that he had done all he could for his mother. You will allow him to be free from regret. What a blessing. I’m so proud of you. Hey, send me your phone number. I have a few friends I wanna hook you up with. LOL. Just to chitchat over coffee. Hey now! Alma

PAPILLION PAPILLION is a remake of the 70's movie starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. It's also based on a book that tells the true store of Henri Charriere aka Papillion and his single-minded plan to escape from a hell hole of a prison called Devil's Island after he receives a life sentence for being falsely accused of murder. While in prison Papillion meets and becomes friends with a convicted counterfeiter names Louis Dega. Dega, who has tucked away a stash of cash (in a place that I won't go into depth about), and in return for Papillion's protection in prison he finances Charriere's several failed escape attempts. While the two main actors do an adequate job of playing the two lead characters, Charlie Hun-

nam, who does resemble a young Steve McQueen, and Rami Malek pale in comparison to the two original actors from the1973 film. The depth of the emotions of the two actors just wasn't there for me. The director chose to make a more documentary style film with facts about the French prison system and it also shows Henri Charriere at the end of the movie as an old man who returns to French Guiana to have his memories published (which in real life became a best seller in France).

33 minutes and is rated R. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate PAPILLION a MEDIUM.

I was very disappointed with the remake of this movie. I think Hollywood needs to learn that some movies are just better left alone. The movie runs 2 hours and

Valder Beebe Show

THAT CELEBRITY INTERVIEW: Gayle Jessup White Valder Beebe

Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty brings to life the story of slavery at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. My guest Gayle Jessup White, Monticello’s community engagement officer and a descendant of the Hemings family and a Thomas Jefferson descendant, she stops in at the Dallas Valder Beebe Show studios. announced this exhibition. This exhibition is unique. It tells the story of America through the lives of the enslaved and their descendants. What many people do not know is that Thomas Jefferson who wrote the Declaration of Independence and gave us the words “all men are created equal” also owned 607 people. Men, women and children throughout his life. People do not want to think about slavery. It is American original sin. But a fact it is important that we acknowledge all Americans the good and the bad that occurred in the birth of this nation. It is important that we acknowledge and understand the contributions that the enslaved made to make America the economic power that it was. Four million people were free after the Civil War of 1860 who were working for free. Cotton was the principle

export. Cotton built America. Who was picking that cotton? Enslaved people. And the connections were not just in the south. Connection extended to the North, to banks, to industries and to Europe. We must understand this. We must understand this history. We still live the legacies of slavery every day. This is what people will learn in this exhibition Exhibition from September 22-December 31, 2018, featuring items new to the exhibition; Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty at the African American Museum of Dallas.
