Not another hashtag!� That’s the cry around the country and now across the waters as many heard the news reports that yet another unarmed Black man had been gunned down by a police officer on Friday, September 7. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes of Dallas’ Friendship-West Baptist Church said he was in South Africa when he and others heard that Botham Shem Jean was in his home when an intruder, Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, entered the

Facing the pain of Sickle Cell Disease ADVERTORIAL

Imagine being taken to the hospital in severe pain, then being dismissed without treatment or care. Now, imagine if you were a physician who was in severe pain, and you were still ignored. How would you feel? Helpless? Angry? Desperate? All of the above? Unfortunately, this isn’t a made-up scenario. It’s exactly what happened to a physician I know, who happens to live with a debilitating illness that is common, incurable, yet one we know way too little about: sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease is a lifelong, genetic blood disorder that causes the body to produce abnormally shaped red blood cells. Normal red blood cells move easily through the blood vessels and carry oxygen to all parts of the body. Sickle cells, however, are hard, sticky and tend to clump together. The cells then get stuck and literally block the flow of blood to the organs and limbs, causing pain, anemia and organ damage. Among black Americans, one in every 400 babies is born with the disease. And the incidence of the sickle cell trait, the carrier status, occurs in one in 12 live births. In the U.S., sickle cell disease affects more than 100,000 people, while globally SCD affects more than 3.5 million people. SCD is also common in Spanish-speaking countries in South America, Central America and parts of the Caribbean. Because of the nature of SCD as a chronic illness, the burden of care can be tremendous on families and communities. The most common reason that people www.texasmetronews.com
with SCD seek medical care and acute care services is that they frequently suffer from sickle cell crisis pain episodes. In fact, patients with SCD utilize more emergency department services than patients with other more common chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma and hypertension. This sudden, severe, acute pain is also the primary cause of distrust between the medical health system and those living with SCD. It is ingrained in trained medical professionals to seek objective reasons related to patient symptoms and disease processes. Unfortunately there are no known tests or procedures that can definitively show whether an actual SCD pain crisis is occurring or not. That is why, when people engage the medical system, they are often given erroneous explanations for delays and subpar care such as “your blood counts look good, you can’t be having pain” or “we are waiting for your test results before we can give you any treatment” or “we can’t give any opioid medications for sickle pain,” which only leads to prolonged suffering of the person in pain. My friend’s experience was all too common. After being released without treatment the first time she went to the hospital, she returned a few days later. She was fatigued and was struggling to breathe, but she wasn’t given any IV fluids, antibiotics or pain medications even though she was in pain with each breath. Fortunately, she had an advocate with her at the hospital who demanded the attention of her physicians — but not before she ended up in the intensive care unit with acute chest syndrome. Acute chest syndrome is one of several serious life-threatening complications of SCD, and it needs rapid treatment to prevent fatal outcomes. My friend was blessed someone advocated on her behalf to save her life. Unfortunately these episodes occur too frequently with many people succumbing to the complications — not the disease itself. As my friend told me, “I’ve had two near death experiences, not because of my sickle cell disease but because as a patient I was never acknowledged.” As providers we must do better. We need to remain empathetic and engaged to serve our patients as humanely as possible, recognizing there is very limited ammunition to fight debilitating pain. A review of the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence during the Roberts Era reveals that in the most controversial and salient civil cases – those decided by bare 5-4 or 5-3 majorities – when the right wing of the Court has voted en bloc to form the majority, they do so to advance far-right and corporate interests a striking 92% of the time. In those cases, the “Roberts Five� – Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice

The backroom whispers and bedtime stories he told to the Federalist Society made him the solid pick for Trump’s base, but I remember the horror stories of the pre-Roe v. Wade decision. There was a beautiful teenage girl who lived next door to my grandmother when I was less than 10 years old. She was there one day and the
next she was gone. By age 20, the story was modified. She died because of a coat hanger, but not the way I had been told. She disobeyed the law and bled to death. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 68,000 women die each year as a result of complications of unsafe abortions. Somewhere between two and seven million women annually survive unsafe abortion but sustain long-term damage or disease. There is no doubt that in America the deaths and injuries are suffered disproportionately by minority women, and women who live in poverty. It’s bad enough that Kavanaugh wants to ride shotgun with the Roberts Five. He wants to help this court of lifetime appointees as they further foist the fantasies of the far-right and the filthy rich. But to encroach upon a woman’s right to choose allows them too much rope; too much power. If we can survive this nomination, we as the majority of Americans should promise to never miss an opportunity to vote and to amend the Constitution. The granting of lifetime appointments must be reconsidered. If the Roberts Five continue down this “Yellow Brick Road,� not even the clicking of red heels will get us back home. in their national rankings, according to U.S. News & World Report. FAMU is proud to remain among the top 10 HBCUs in the nation. FAMU maintained its spot as the No. 1 public HBCU in the nation from 2016 to 2018. The 2019 rankings indicate that FAMU is now the No. 2 public HBCU. FAMU continues to hold its rankings as the No. 1 producer of African-American bachelor’s degrees in America (Di-
verse Issues), the No.1 institution of origin for Black scientists and engineers (National Science Foundation), and the No.1 HBCU for academics and exceptional student experience, according to Niche, a top rankings database. We remain committed to the roadmap outlined in our new Strategic Plan 'FAMU Rising,' and we will continue to implement new initiatives and enhanced programs that ensure student success.
In the past year, the University has improved its retention and four-year and six-year graduation rates and implemented new initiatives, such as “Finish in Four,� to ensure on-time graduation. Additionally, the median wages of FAMU graduates increased, as well as the percent of graduates employed or enrolled in graduate school.

The White House war against federal workers

The economy is doing well, crows the Pugilist-in-Chief, complaining that he doesn’t get enough credit for the things that he has done to “make America great again.” Every time a positive number is released, he brags like a banty rooster. GDP growth higher than expected? He did it. Unemployment rate down, he did that, too. He has little to say about the fact that wages remain stagnant, and he has dared to scold the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank about increasing interest rates, which is a reasonable strategy during economic expansion. So if the economy is doing so well, why has
the President declared that federal workers will not get the 2.1 percent pay increase budgeted for them for 2019. He says our economy can’t afford it, but his tax cuts will cause the deficit to balloon by $1.5 trillion. We can afford to give businesses $1 trillion in tax cuts, spend $200 billion providing rich folks a break by eliminating the estate tax, and throw ordinary people $300 billion in tax cuts (with folks at the top getting most of the break) but we can’t afford to pay two million federal workers $25 billion in raises! The raises represent just two percent of the cost of the tax cut. The President says this is a cost-cutting measure, but many see it otherwise. Indeed, since he came to Washington pledging to “drain the swamp,” he has had it in for federal employees. By the way, the pledge to “drain the swamp” is now laughable. The conviction of his former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, along with the guilty plea of his personal attorney suggests that he added quite a few of his own alligators to the swamp he pledged to drain. The troubled resignations of his feed-at-thetrough cabinet members like former Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt and former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price are proof positive that 45 did not want to drain the swamp but profit from it! A thorough investigation of the way that 45 and his family have financially benefitted from his Presidency would be most illuminat-
ing. Consider the money the Trump family extracts from the hotel -- the trademarks First
Daughter Exploiter Ivanka has been able to obtain from the Chinese government (perhaps in exchange for implied favorable treatment from her daddy); the exploitation of federal resources whenever 45 plays golf at one of his own golf courses (with our government paying for it). 45 is not draining the swamp, he is swimming in it. Thus, his commitment to drain the swamp is, at best, laughable. At the same time, his attack on federal employees is reprehensible. Why can we afford $1.5 trillion in tax cut but not $25 billion in raises? And why does 45 keep bragging about the healthy economy while playing poor with federal workers? Actually, we can afford the raises, just like we provided the tax cut. It is a matter of choice. 45’s administration has attacked the rights and dignity of the federal worker from the moment he stepped into office. Legislation has been passed to make it easier to fire federal employees, workers in federal offices have been capriciously reassigned, often given the choice of moving or losing their jobs, federal employee unions have been challenged and attacked, with rules about union activity changing with little notice, office space taken away from union workers, and other assaults. Now, 45 is escalating this war on federal workers, taking away their very modest pay increases for the year.
In some ways, this seems directed at the federal workforce in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, all areas that have no love for the blustering, bullying 45th President. But the federal workforce is national, and there are heavy concentrations in California, and in Trump-loving states like Texas, Ohio, Florida and Pennslyvania. Notably, 18 percent of the federal workforce, a disproportionate number, is African American. Last week, 45 attempted to motivate his evangelical base by suggesting that if Democrats won the mid-term elections they “will overturn everything that we’ve done and they’ll do it quickly and violently.” He is projecting his own violence and behavior onto Democrats. He is the one who urged people to fight dissidents at his rallies. He is the one who has systematically attempted to reverse many of President Obama’s policies starting with his first day in office. 45 is wrong in suggesting that Democrats will resort to violence after they win the midterm elections, but he is right to anticipate that some of his more egregious actions will be overturned, even more quickly than he overturned Obama policies. If Democrats win, this attack on federal workers will stop. Congress can halt this edict to suspend raises through legislation, but the Republican house is too bonded to the swamp-dwelling president to do the right thing. Get Ready to Vote! From the Capitol
During the January, 2017 confirmation hearing for U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions Georgia Congressman John by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Lewis and New Jersey Senator Corey Booker testified against the Senator from Alabama becoming the nation’s chief law enforcement officer. The two esteemed legislators expressed their concerns that Sessions would lead a Justice Department that would be hostile to minority voting rights, and that welcomed state-sponsored voter suppression such as the law passed by the Texas legislature requiring registered voters to present state-approved voter identification before they could cast their ballots. Nearly two years later, the opposition of my colleagues and that of members of the Congressional Black Caucus and other members of the Democratic Party seems prescient. The Justice Department, led by Attorney General Sessions, stands as an impediment to the voting and civil rights of racial minorities, and to those of other minority groups. With the crucial November mid-term elections approaching minority voters cannot expect any help from the Justice Department. That is why it is so important that voters come out in large numbers, and that those who are not registered to vote do so immediately! National Voter Registration Day is September 25, th and the entire month of September is being acknowledged as National Voter Registration Month during which each of us must encourage everyone we know to register and vote in the fall. The Democratic vote in Texas and throughout the nation must be decisive, wrestling control from the Republican-controlled Congress and sending a strong message to the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Among other things, a Congress controlled by Democrats will address voter suppression and attempt to restore the heart of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which was severely damaged by the United States Supreme Court when a majority of its justices decided in June of 2013 to eliminate the preclearance provision from the legislation, precluding federal oversight of voting rights plans by state legislators. If you have not registered or if you have changed your address or your name since the last time you voted you should visit the Web site of the National Association of the Secretaries of State, www.can|vote.org, to obtain correct voting instructions. You do not want to go the polls on Election Day and be confronted with questions about your ability to cast a ballot, or be told that you cannot vote. We must always remember that voting is a fundamental right. There are heroes in the history of this country that gave their lives in the struggle to secure voting rights for all people. We honor them and the legacy that they left us by voting.

Frazier House Is Now Open!
Providing Programs and Services to Community Frazier House opened June 4 following two years of planning for programs and services, and renovations to the building. It is housed on the first floor of the former Julia C. Frazier Elementary School at 4600 Spring Avenue. Frazier House is an initiative of the Zan Wesley Holmes, Jr. Community Outreach Center (ZWHJCOC) that will provide multiple services to the community in partnership and collaboration with other nonprofits, service organizations and the Dallas ISD. The shared space will offer access to a variety of services, including educational, legal, health-related, and financial. Social services, job skills training and job placement opportunities also are part of the outreach efforts that Frazier House delivers. Hiring staff and scaling of partners into the building are the tasks at hand. On board to handle those tasks are Executive Director Frances Smith-Dean and Operations Manager Jasmine Anderson. The Oasis Center is the first partner to move into Frazier House.They offer job training readiness programs and classes for 1st time youth offenders. To date, two classes have graduated from this program.
Other activities have included— The kick-off of the Lunch & Learn series of classes offered to small businesses and nonprofit organizations. Classes have included social media marketing and creating sustainable business models. The September class is Public Speaking: Finding Your Voice. A signature event, Juneteenth Economic Forum, was held this year at Frazier House. Increments of Success, a ZWHJCOC finance class, is underway as well. Hosted St. Luke Day for members of the St. Luke COLLIN Community United Methodist Church, which is a partner with the ZWHJCOC. Frazier House is one of several locations in the city of Dallas where individuals can apply for State Fair of Texas jobs.

Last year, our company put on a national contest to honor the best people across the organization. The idea was to recognize people who don’t get much recognition and make sure people knew of their accomplishments. We all think very highly of our co-worker, an older woman (65+) named Laura. I nominated Laura, with her permission, and she won! I was excited, our co-workers were excited and she even got an article in the local paper. Laura’s reaction really surprised me. She wrote an email to everyone saying it was embarrassing and that other people deserved it more than she did. Now, she barely speaks to me. And when she does, it’s sometimes snarky or a put down. I am completely mystified. I truly wanted to honor her. And the reaction to her award has been 100% positive. To be honest, I’m

You asked for permission to submit info on someone for a contest and she won. You’re feeling good about what you did and thought it double-doggon delightful when the local newspaper decided to cover the good deed. Unfortunately, while all this was happening the person at the center of the hoopla didn’t seem appreciative and alerted everyone of such feelings, and has now distanced herself. Umhm, I think I got it. So you stopped by to ask me why I think she’s rescinded her cordial communication towards you and others around the office. Umhm, good question.
My advice is simple, ask her. You asked her if you could nominate her, now ask her why she feels troubled by the win. There’s no need to guess. It’ll give you two a chance to talk it out. Usually when I try to figure out why someone has said or done something, without confronting them, I’m almost always wrong. My thoughts and judgements are often wildly misplaced. Your questions of concern will honor her even more, and allow her to see that you truly respect her as a colleague and her feelings. While I still have your ear, I’d like to add… When you do something nice for someone, whatever that may be, it’s not your place to determine how they should react. She said thank you, she didn’t deserve it, now that’s her cake to bake. You can’t adjust her appreciation apron. Don’t allow her attitude starved of gratitude to dictate your feelings. The part you played in this contest was admirable, you should take pride in that. The fact that she won is just icing with a cherry on top. Alma

Nothing sweet about Peppermint Peppermint is a new action film starring Jennifer Garner as a mom who is hell-bent on revenge after drug dealers kill her husband and daughter. She's also wounded in the drive-by attack but she recovers and is able to identify the three killers who murdered her family. However, the drug dealers make payoffs to everyone involved in the case, from the D.A. to the judge. So, when she's unable to get justice through the system, she decides to get it on her own. She spends five years "off the grid" and then returns having learned martial arts and undergone weapons training. Living out of a van on skid row she goes after everyone involved in her fami-
ly’s murder and starts to leave a body count of drug dealers and crooked officials. The movie also has a few surprise plot twists that will leave you guessing which of the law enforcement officials is an informant for the drug lord. The plot will keep you on your toes. And Jennifer Garner is about as subtle as a momma bear in her dealings with the crooked officials and drug dealers. Peppermint is rated R for gratuitous violence and has a run time of 1 hour and 42 minutes. However, it is an enjoyable, heart-pounding thrill ride that I think you will like. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate Peppermint a JUMBO.

He told me he had never heard the song before, but that day, he called back to St. Lucia and asked his grandmother to teach him that old hymn on the phone. So he shared it with us at Lectureship that night, and it was a truly special moment.” The entire Harding family grieves today for the loss of Botham Jean, who has meant so very much to us. Mavs announce 2018 Preseason/Regular Schedule By Dorothy J Gentry Sports Editor The Dallas Mavericks are back. The franchise recently released it’s pre-season and regular schedule for the 2018-19 season. They kick off the pre-season with a game against the Beijing Ducks, Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at American Airlines Center against the Beijing Ducks. The Mavs will play two home games at the AAC during the pre-season and two games abroad in China against the Philadelphia 76ers. Dallas will land in Shanghai on Tuesday, Oct. 2 and practice on Wednesday and Thursday before taking on the 76ers at Mercedes-Benz Arena on Friday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 am (Dallas time). Both the Mavericks and 76ers will then travel to Shenzhen, China to play the second and final international
exhibition game at Shenzhen Universiade Center on Monday, Oct. 8 at 7 a.m. CST NBA-TV will broadcast both games in China. The Charlotte Hornets come to Dallas on Oct. 12 to close out the Mavs pre-season schedule. Both Mavericks home games will be locally televised. FOX Sports Southwest PLUS will air the home game against Beijing (Sept. 29) while FOX Sports Southwest will televise the preseason finale against Charlotte (Oct. 12). All of the preseason games can be heard on ESPN 103.3 FM. The Mavericks’ 2018-19 season – its 39th season as a franchise and 18th playing at American Airlines -begins on Wednesday, Oct. 17th on the road against the Phoenix Suns at 9:30 p.m. CST on
