A lie is a lie, is a lie When you are in a position of power or influence, or fortunate to have a bully pulpit; you have an obligation to be conscientious and responsible. In essence you have to know what you are talking about and when to speak. If you’re fortunate to have an audience that respects you and has an expectation that the words coming out of your mouth are based on truth, are thought-provoking and trustworthy; it is imperative that you never do anything to violate that trust. Folks are depending on you to be honest and you can’t let them down. Over the past week I have heard so many lies and innuendoes that it has been so disheartening. Talk about fake news or whatever you want to call it. No, I am not talking about the president of these United States of America. I am talking about the constant commentary, speculation, gossip and mess involving the murder case of Amber Guyger.

Nia Franklin wins Miss America By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor

The genius, intelligence, beauty and spirit of Black women, which continues to transform the world, shined brightly again Sunday as Nia Franklin became the first Miss America in the post-swimsuit Nia Franklin era. Miss Ameirca “It took a lot of perseverance to get here, Franklin, the freshly crowned beauty queen, said after her win. “I want to thank my beautiful family, my mom and my dad, who is a survivor of cancer. An opera singer, Franklin is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and earned her master’s degree in music composition from UNC School of the Arts, according to her biography as reported by CNN. A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she moved to New York after being accepted at the Kenan Fellow program at Lincoln Center Education in Manhattan. During the competition, Franklin described how music helped her find her identity. “I grew up at a predominately Caucasian school and there was only five percent minority, and I felt out of place so much because of the color of my skin, Franklin said. “But growing up, I found my love of arts, and through music that helped me to feel positive about myself and about who I was. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association – the trade organization that represents 220 African American-owned newspapers across the country – said Franklin’s win is just another statement on the outstanding achievements of Black women today. “The NNPA Congratulates 2018 Miss America, Nia Franklin. The genius, intelligence, beauty and spirit of Black women impact and transform the world, Chavis tweeted. Franklin, who plans to advocate for the arts during her tenure as Miss America, told reporters that she was also happy that the swimsuit competition had been discontinued.

UNCF College Tour stops in Fort Worth, awarding local students Hundreds of students expected to attend the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Empower Me Tour — Hundreds of Fort Worth high school graduating seniors will be given the opportunity to apply for thousands of dollars in scholarships on Friday, September 28th at Tarrant County College (Trinity River Campus 8:30 a.m.) during the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Empower Me Tour (EMT). EMT is a free, traveling college-and-career-readiness roadshow that provides a platform for high school students to earn on-site scholarships and admission to the nation’s top historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). UNCF is the largest scholarship provider to students of color, awarding $100 million annually in HBCU scholarships to more than 10,000 students across the country. “I started applying for scholarships my senior year,” says Elizabeth Spears, Fort Worth native and sophomore at Dillard University. Spears, a varsity basketball star, tore her ACL her senior year, then shifted her career focus to help others. She knew her college tuition would put a huge financial burden on her parents. “All of my sisters and brothers were in college and grad school,” she says. “Receiving a $5,000 scholarship from UNCF put me in better standing, it cleared me for my first year and I was able to get

college started off on a good note,” adds the public health major. UNCF seeks to serve and extend scholarship opportunities to more high school seniors from Fort Worth, just like Elizabeth through EMT. “As the program’s founding sponsor, we are tremendously proud of how far EMT has come over the past 10 years. Our team members across the country are looking forward to another year of supporting thousands of deserving students in their pursuit of higher education through volunteerism and mentoring,” says Jimmie Paschall, Executive Vice President, Enterprise Diversity & Inclusion and Strategic Philanthropy at Wells Fargo. Through partnerships with Fort Worth, and surrounding area, school districts, parents, national sponsors Wells Fargo, Target, P&G and FedEx, and local sponsors, EMT offers access to information and recruiters from HBCUs, college prep workshops, dynamic presenters, and award-winning educational experts. Students will have an opportunity to apply for college admission, financial aid and scholarships including the EMT Merit Scholarship, presented in partnership with Target on the spot. Fort Worth is the first of five stops on the EMT tour. Other cities include Cincinnati, OH; Milwaukee, WI; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA and Atlanta, GA. For more information, visit: www.EmpowerMeTour.org. You can follow the tour on social media @UNCF #EmpowerMeTour.

I would say, “If there is anyone in the world you want to believe what you say, it should be me, because I will fight with you until the end if you are telling the truth. Didn’t work, but it sounded good! I fought for our Country — Now NFL Players are kneeling for me

Speaking truth to power By Samuel Innocent I’m a veteran of the U.S. Army. So it may come as a surprise that the day I read about NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, I could not have been prouder. I was proud because after serving my country for seven years, it felt like someone was finally looking out for me. As someone who served as a sergeant in Afghanistan, only to take a civilian job helping veterans upon returning home, I fully understand patriotism. I work hard to embody it every day. That’s precisely why I think it’s so important to stop mischaracterizing Colin Kaepernick’s movement as unpatriotic. Players are not kneeling to protest the national anthem, as they’ve explained time and time again. They are kneeling to say that the ways in which police officers and the criminal justice system treat African-Americans (people like me and my family) constitute a national crisis. I’m grateful for the players’ decision to take a knee. Because when many people set eyes

on me, the first thing they see isn’t someone who may have missed his sister’s wedding, lost his father, and buried several friends during his tour of duty. They don’t see a former combat medic who’d risked his life for their country or a man whose seven years of honorable service didn’t include a moment to grieve. Instead of a veteran, they see a Black man first and foremost. And in 2014, police saw a potential criminal. The awakening came only a few years after leaving the Army and returning home to my beloved New York. I’d enrolled in college, one of the major steps for reintegrating back into society after service. My new dream was to work on local policy. I commuted daily from the Bronx to Manhattan to attend my classes at City College of New York. One night, during the two-block stroll from the subway to my apartment, New York Police Department officers stopped me in my path. I fit the description of someone who’d just committed a crime, they said. “What was the crime?” I asked. They said they couldn’t tell me. When I asked if the description was for someone who looked like me (someone wearing a shirt and tie) they said I would have to call the station to find out. I was then put against a wall and searched. I felt humiliated and helpless. It was only when they asked for my ID that they saw my veteran status at the top of it. Finally, the degrading and unwarranted search

came to an end. They told me to have a nice day. A part of me wanted to dismiss what had just happened to me as an isolated incident. But I knew that this practice disproportionally occurred in poorer neighborhoods and overwhelmingly targeted young Black men. A report by the New York Civil Liberties Union showed that innocent New Yorkers were subjected to stop-and-frisk tactics more than five million times since 2002, with people of color comprising the vast majority. These racially discriminatory NYPD stops were ruled unconstitutional in 2013, but this year officials revealed that Black New Yorkers were still eight times more likely than white residents to be arrested for low-level marijuana charges, despite the groups using it as similar rates. Tragically, racially biased policing isn’t contained to my hometown and leads to deadly consequences across America. Last year, a journalistic investigation found that Black people were shot more often than White people by police, although Black people were less likely to be found with a weapon. When I left to join the military, it wasn’t for me. It was for my family and loved ones who I would leave behind. I felt like I was doing my part, so they wouldn’t have to live in fear of events like 9/11 happening again. But my service in Afghanistan hasn’t made my family safer from the people sworn to protect us in our own backyards.

So yes, I was proud of players like Colin Kaepernick, Eric Reid, and Olivier Vernon because I knew how few people would be willing to risk their careers to shed light on issues that are urgent for people of color but that others often sweep under the rug. I’m proud that when Americans tune in to be entertained, the players in turn make the world more cognizant of the need to change how law enforcement operates. The players are not disrespecting veterans by kneeling. My local Veterans Affairs hospital in Brooklyn has slowly shut down parts of the facility and forced veterans to seek care elsewhere. This truly is disrespectful and not the promise that this nation made to its service members. Disrespect is the struggle that veteran charities face when trying to raise money. If you feel that forcing America to grapple with its continued systematic oppression of racial minorities is disrespectful, take a deeper look at why it bothers you. I pray that one day my fellow countrymen will see me for who I am: a veteran and a Black man who wants to be treated the same as everyone else—whether I’m in uniform or not. I fought for our nation abroad, and now the players fight for my inclusion at home. (Samuel Innocent is a former Army combat medic who served in Afghanistan and a Pat Tillman Foundation scholar.) Washington, DC – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson hosted her 26th annual Science and Technology Brain Trust as part of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference. The program featured a panel of leaders in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields, who shared their experiences, in line with the program’s theme “Building the Future, Today: STEMulating the Next Generation of Leaders.” “Even though I’ve been doing this for a long time, I’m still impressed by the conversations we have when we get STEM pro-

fessionals and students in the same room to talk about these issues,” said Congresswoman Johnson during panel. “I was and still am excited to hear about all of the work being done at our agencies, in the private sector, at advocacy groups, and in schools to help further the goal of more diversity in STEM.” Founded in 1993, the Science and Technology Brain Trust was designed by Congresswoman Johnson to expand the opportunities made available to people of color in STEM professions. This year’s panel was attended by more than 300 participants, including more than 200 students.

Parkland CMO reflects on one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria ‘Nothing about Puerto Rico after the storm approached normalcy’ On the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, devastating the island and plunging all of its 3.4 million residents into a desperate humanitarian crisis. Roberto de la Cruz, MD, Parkland Health & Hospital System’s Chief Medical Officer sat glued to his computer watching a live video-feed from the island and fearing for the safety of his family and friends who reside there. With sustained winds clocked at nearly 155 mph – just two mph short of Category 5 status – it wasn’t long before all communication with the island was lost. As he watched in fear for his homeland, Dr. de la Cruz did the only thing he could think of. He bought a plane ticket home. Despite multiple attempts to communicate, a few days would pass before he was finally able to reach anyone on the island. Though relieved to hear their voices, he was even more determined to make the trip. “I need to see family and touch base,” he said at the time. Weighted down with three bags, each weighing 50 pounds and packed with much-needed items such as solar lights, and armed with his medical license and stethoscope, Dr. de la Cruz boarded a flight the morning of Oct. 6 and headed to Puerto Rico. As the plane made its descent into San Juan, tears filled his eyes. “It was shocking. There were no leaves on the trees; they just looked like matchsticks,” he recalled. Soon though, he had tears of joy. In a Facebook post he wrote, “Family is doing well! Tired and hot, but very resourceful and in good spirits.” The five days he spent with family and friends went by all too quickly and Dr. de la Cruz knew he had to do more. Though back in Dallas, the pull toward Puerto Rico was great. That’s when he sat down with Parkland CEO Dr. Fred Cerise who, as the former Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, had experienced first-hand the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. “Dr. Cerise convinced me to stand down and wait until the island had moved from a rescue mission to a recovery one,” he said. With support from Parkland’s CEO, at the end of January 2018 Dr. de la Cruz took a two month leave from the hospital to work with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Puerto Rico. “Nothing about Puerto Rico after the storm approached normalcy. The beauty I saw was in the rebuilding in the lives being lived with joy and grace in the most trying of circumstances. Being there was www.texasmetronews.com

one of the most calming and soul-filling experiences of this trip,” he said, quoting from a New York Times article written by Jada Yuan. His HHS assignment was to help determine the current state of healthcare on the island and the capacity to prepare for the next storm. He visited hospitals in the outlying mountainous regions. There were instances where machetes were required to cut through the thick brush that had enveloped the roads following the storm. Still, Dr. de la Cruz was amazed by the resilience of staff he met, some of whom had been trapped in the hospital for days caring for patients who were too sick to move in a building with a damaged roof, holes in walls and flooding an ever-present concern. For an instant, he looked above. “There is a beautiful sky here. Nature is kind and exuberant. She has not disappointed. No paradox, there, accepting that she can be kind and punishing in no special order,” he thought. During his trip Dr. de la Cruz and the team traveled from San Juan for more than two-and-a-half hours by car to get to Castañer General Hospital. This place held special meaning for Parkland’s CMO because as a medical student he lived in Castañer for a month while on his family practice rotation. There, the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer José Rodriguez described what things had been like in the storm’s aftermath. “Our hospital’s maintenance director, Agustin Ponce, drove his four-wheel-drive Jeep ahead of the ambulance evaluating the way. Community members who accompanied him used rods to lift downed wires blocking the road, making it possible for the ambulance to pass. What was typically a little more than a 45-minute journey took over two hours,” Dr. Rodriguez said. It was stories like Dr. Rodriguez’s that were repeated countless times during his two-month island assignment. And though recovery efforts seemed as if they were reduced to a snail’s pace, Dr. de la Cruz was inspired by what he witnessed in Puerto Rico. “I was impressed by the leadership and the ways in which people learned to improvise. I saw a case where a hospital was trying to buy a gas station so staff would have fuel to get to work and instead of giving cash they were giving IOUs,” he said, his voice trailing off. “And it turns out that the main health need wasn’t medicines or doctors. It was communication, transportation and electricity. Once these needs were eventually met, the new normal had begun.” As the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria approaches, Dr. de la Cruz pauses to reflect. “I believe nature will recover, but it will look different. This is not something that is going to take months; it will take years.”

Dirk holds Charity Celebrity Tennis Classic By Dorothy J Gentry

After a week of clouds, storms and rain, the sun and humidity returned just in time for the annual Dirk Nowitzki Pro Celebrity Tennis Classic. The Classic, held last weekend at SMU’s Tennis Center, featured tennis legends Andy Roddick, Mark Knowles, Tommy Haas and Taylor Dent, pro wakeboarder Steel Lafferty, Dirk’s teammates on the Dallas Mavericks - Dwight Powell and Devin Harris - and former Mav teammate Monta Ellis.

In the final round of the Classic, former tennis pro Mark Knowles and amateur Carmelia Georgiana Marta defeated tennis pro Mitchell Krueger and amateur Jessica Nowitzki, Dirk’s wife, 10-5. Dirks’ teammate Dwight Powell said he is thrilled to participate in any and everything Dirk asks. “It’s very motivating for all of us, I think in the Dallas community, athletes or not, to get involved and help,” he said. “He’s left such a tremendous footprint in a positive way in this city and in this state. So anytime he calls any of us, we’ll

Proceeds from the event benefit the children’s charities of The Dirk Nowitzki Foundation. “We’re excited. This is the third annual time we are doing this,” Nowitzki said. “We refreshed the weather every hour and it’s a great day. We’re thankful for the support and this is all about fun.” Spectators were treated to food, fun, a great tennis match, autographs from participants and music from Dallas Mavericks DJ Poizon Ivy.

Mother has questions about her slain son’s murder and murderer By Cheryl Smith Texas Metro News

Life will never be the same for Allison Jean. She won’t be able to hold her son in her arms, look into his smiling face or hear his voice. She won’t be able to call him on September 29 and say, “Happy Birthday!” Instead, she received a call that unfortunately too many mothers, especially Black mothers have received over the years. Her son Botham Jean was murdered. For many of those mothers, they never received what they called “justice” and they can identify with Mrs. Jean because many have seen the same behavior where the “victim is victimized.” Mr. Jean wasn’t gang-banging, or robbing and looting. He wasn’t the victim of a drive-by shooting or caught up in a drug deal gone bad. He wasn’t even in a car mouthing off when stopped by police. While there are still many sketchy details, it has been accurately noted that the PricewatershouseCoopers analyst was at home in the apartment where he paid rent, in Dallas’ South Side Flats Apartments, when he was killed by Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger, who also lived in the apartments but on a different floor. She has since vacated her apartment. Almost two weeks after the murder, and Mrs. Jean is still looking for answers. And she’s not alone. Is Officer Guyger the beneficiary of “white privilege” or as Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III of Friendship-West Baptist Church referred to “Blue bias” where police officers protect their own? Or is it a combination of both? From the shielding of her identity, to the quick processing at the Kaufman County Jail, to the charge of manslaughter and the varying tales around the occurrences of that fate-

Justice for Botham Jean, ful night, people are confused. According to Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson, no stone will be left unturned as her office prepares to present the case to a grand jury. She says she is confident that justice will be served. Speaking at Monday Night Politics, a forum sponsored by the Dallas Examiner, the district attorney said she was limited in what she could say about an ongoing case, but she wanted those in attendance to know that ensuring justice was a priority. Will those reassuring words be enough for the grieving mother, friends, loved ones or concerned citizens? What about across the country and around the world where voices are being heard, calling for everything from the firing of Ms. Guyger, to the disciplining of officers some say leaked inflammatory, prejudicial information. Former Judge John Creuzot is in a heated race for District Attorney, against DA Johnson. He, too, has questions and issued a statement recently, “Based on what little information we have so far, this is the best explanation of the law that I can provide for the community. Left unanswered is why Officer Guyger’s arrest and charging were delayed. Was this delay in part due to the fact that she is a police officer? I suspect so. Another question left unanswered is whether Officer Guyger, based on the facts and standard protocol, is being charged with an offense a level below what you or I would be charged with under similar circumstances. Certainly it appears she is benefitting from leniency. “As I said, the family of Botham Jean and the community are owed a transparent and rational explanation for how this tragic situation has been handled to date. Let us hope we get that. Justice demands it,” he concluded. Speaking publicly about the issue, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings has asked that all the false stories being bantered around on social media

cease. No good, he says is coming out of speculation and posting false information. Protesters have gathered at City Hall, in the streets, outside the Dallas Police Department Headquarters, in front of media organizations, and even the AT&T Stadium where the Dallas Cowboys played the New York Giants on Sunday night. Minister Dominique Alexander said the protests are going to continue, as he encouraged broader community support for a number of issues, including reform, and a Citizens/Police review board with “teeth”, which comes in several forms, including having subpoena power. At Dallas City Hall, last week, prior to walking into the Council Chambers to address the Council; surrounded by ministers, activists and the mother of another Black male victim, Min. Alexander also addressed what he called the “misogynistic” treatment of Dallas’ first African American female Police Chief. “I’m appalled at the behavior and disrespect for Chief (U. Renee) Hall,” said the Minister, as he talked about what some call the undermining of her authority. “We have to demand respect for women in America.” Services for Mr. Jean were held at Greenville Avenue Church of Christ, and then his body was returned to Saint Lucia. Although he is gone, there are many who say they are going to remain vigilant and continue to demand justice. The United Methodist (UM) African American Clergy Fellowship announced the United Methodist of All Colors Walk for Justice 11 am, Wednesday, September 19 beginning in front of the Dallas Police Headquarters ending at 12 noon at the South Side Flats, where Mr. Jean was murdered. Sisters for Justice will have prayer, praise and a panel discussion on the Botham Jean Case on Friday, Sept. 21 at 6:30p.m. at the Light of the World Church of Christ, 7408 South Hampton Road, Dallas.

When church was over today (Sunday), several faith leaders took two buses to Cowboys Stadium right before the game started and two funeral cars with caskets. We walked about a mile to the stadium in silent protest with two caskets representing the bodies of Botham Jean who was killed by a police officer in Dallas whose funeral was Thursday, and OShea Terry who was killed by Arlington police and whose funeral was Saturday. Representing all killed by police illegally. Dr Michael W. Waters officiated, several prayed and Dr Frederick D Haynes III did the eulogy while I and others brought in the caskets. We then took a knee at the stadium by those same caskets. We demand the firing of Amber Guyger, increase charge to murder, media apology for smearing Botham’s name and dpd policy investigation. We will continue until justice is served.

Rev. Marcus D. King Texas.... where a killer cop spends less time in jail than the protestors who demonstrated to hold her accountable. Less than two hours for a killer cop... two days and counting for protesting and not destroying property and no one died. Supposed to get out this morning. Trying to make an example out of them but it’s backfiring. Only exposing Tarrant County system for what it is.... Petty, immature, and in need of reform. You lose. Maybe they will demonstrate in cop uniforms next time since turnaround time is much faster in Texas. Dr. M.D. King

THAT CELEBRITY INTERVIEW: Award-Winning Author Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani

Valder Beebe Show The power of technology! Today from Nigeria direct into the Valder Beebe Show studios Award-Winning Nigerian Author Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani In 2014, more than 200 girls were kidnapped from their school dormitory in Chibok, Nigeria. More than 100 remain missing. The poignant new novel, Buried Beneath the Baobab Tree, is based on the Chibok abductions – an event that sparked a global campaign inwww.texasmetronews.com

volving notable activists such as Michelle Obama and Malala. In addition to those from Chibok, Boko Haram has kidnapped thousands of girls across northeast Nigeria. According to Nwaubani, “I wanted to write a story that would enable the world to see these thousands of kidnapped girls not just as numbers, but as the curious, ambitious, and lovely daughters whom their families wanted to see again. I wanted the world to know how irreversibly their lives changed since the kidnappings and understand that this horror must never be allowed to happen again.” In the middle of the night on April 14, 2014, the terrorist group Boko Haram kidnapped more than two hundred girls from their school dormitory in Chibok, Nigeria. The ab-

duction of the “Chibok girls” received worldwide media coverage, sparking a global Bring Back Our Girls campaign involving celebrities from Michelle Obama to Malala. So far, 107 of the Chibok girls have been found, rescued, or freed in negotiations between the Nigerian government and Boko Haram. More than one hundred remain missing. Born, raised and residing in Nigeria, author Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani conducted countless interviews with the Chibok girls to write the poignant new novel, Buried Beneath the Baobab Tree. The book tells the story of a young Nigerian girl who dreams of a new pair of shoes, a university degree and a husband. But her dreams turn to nightmares when her village is attacked by the terrorist group Boko

Haram. She is taken with other girls into the forest where she is forced to follow her captors’ radical beliefs and watch as her best friend slowly accepts everything she’s been told. Profile from PREMIERETV VBS: Adaobi you are an award winning author residing in Nigeria. As a matter of record you are calling me from Nigeria today where you reside. You have conducted countless interviews with kidnapped girls in Nigeria and you have brought forth this eyes-wide-open book, Buried Beneath the Baobab Tree. ATN: We have this terrorist Jihadist group Boko Hiram, the same as Isis who are kidnapping girls from their homes, their school and events all around the North East of Nigeria.

It was not until 2014 when a group of girls [over 200 girls] were kidnapped from their town in Chibok in North East Nigeria that the kidnapping gained worldwide attention. Not just the kidnapping gained attention but worldwide outrage that led to the Bring Back Our Girls campaign that saw the involvement of celebrities Michelle Obama and Malala [Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen]. pastors embraced the goal unity. It is so important that we spend time together, and relish our connectedness, now more than ever. We are living in ever increasing hostile days. We must heed the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., ‘If we do not learn to live together as brothers and sisters, we will perish as fools.’ Longtime Hamilton Park resident, known as “the Mayor,” Thomas Jefferson said, “It seems as though this revival will be like no other revival in the history of Hamilton Park. That history dates back as far as 1954. However, what I like about this particular revival is that we are bridging the old and the new generation. “ He continued, “I’m speaking of the golden age and the past times of worshipping at First Church Hamilton Park with the Rev. J. L. Foster and worshipping with the Hamilton Park UMC and the Rev. Zan W. Holmes Jr. For the new generation we have some of the offsprings, such as Pastor Derrick Bowman and Pastor Aaron McCardell III. This revival may be a first, but with God’s blessing this is only the beginning. This revival means so much for the Hamilton Park Community.”
