McKinney native serves with Strike Fighter Squadron By Navy Office of Community Outreach Public Affairs

LEMOORE, Calif. – A 2011 McKinney Boyd High School graduate and McKinney, Texas native is currently serving with the U.S. Navy’s Strike Fighter Squadron 122, also known as the “Flying Eagles,” stationed at Naval Air Station Lemoore. Petty Officer 3rd Class Rebecca Fields is an aviation structural mechanic with the squadron, which the Navy designates as VFA-122, and works with the Navy’s most lethal and versatile strike fighter aircraft, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. “I help everyone get their qualifications and schedule them for their required training,” said Fields. The Super Hornet takes off from and lands on Navy aircraft carriers and is capable of conducting air-toair combat as well as air-to-surface combat. It is approximately 61 feet long, has a loaded weight of 51,000 lbs., and a max speed of 1,190 miles per hour. Operating from the sea aboard aircraft carriers, the Super Hornet gives the Navy the power to protect America’s interests anywhere, at any time. The versatile jet has the ability to destroy targets located hundreds of miles inland, without the need to get another country’s permission to operate within its borders. “I like the motivation and sense of pride that the squadron has,” said Fields. Fields said she is proud of the work she is doing as part of the squadron’s 1140-member team, helping to protect America on the world’s oceans. “It is important to keep everyone qualified so that they can perform their duties and get the overall mission

complete,” said Fields. Sailors’ jobs are highly varied in VFA-122. Approximately 220 officers, 660 enlisted and 260 civilian men and women make up and keep all parts of the squadron running smoothly — this includes everything from maintaining aircraft airframes

and engines, to processing paperwork, handling weaponry, and flying the aircraft. “The Sailors here are the epitome of a team,” said Cmdr. Ernie Spence, VFA-122’s commanding officer. “Everyone here is professional, skilled in their job, and they are great team players which enables us to accomplish our mission.” The Flying Eagles are the Navy’s West Coast Fleet Replacement Squadron for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. They train aircrew and maintainers to prepare them to go to the fleet and join the squadrons that fly the Super Hornet. VFA-122 trained aircrews have flown combat missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve. “I love serving in the Navy and being a part of the team,” said Fields. “The Navy has so many benefits and opportunities.”

TRUTH TO POWER By George E. Curry

Congress, knowing he would be critical of ongoing negotiations by the U.S. and its allies to freeze Iran’s nuclear weapons. The White House was not consulted on the invitation, a sharp departure from established protocol. The disrespect for Obama and the presidency itself has reached such a low point that a headline in the Washington Post summed it up this way: “Republicans are beginning to act as though Barack Obama isn’t even the president. The story explained, “It’s safe to say that no president in modern times has had his legitimacy questioned by the opposition party as much as Barack Obama. But as his term in office enters its final phase, Republicans are embarking on an entirely new enterprise: They have decided that as long as he holds the office of the presidency, it’s no longer necessary to respect the office itself. And many argue that the hatred extends well beyond partisan politics. PolitcusUSA stated, “It is likely that throughout America’s short history, except for the traitorous Confederacy, no group of individuals has exhibited the characteristic betrayal of a traitor more than conservatives in general, and Republicans in particular. What makes their actions all the more despicable is that their traitorous actions are founded on racial animus for one man; and allegiance to foreigners and one tiny segment of the population. The attacks on Obama began when he first ran for president, with some conservatives openly questioning whether he was a U.S. citizen.

Marilyn Davenport, a member of the Orange County Republican Party in California, e-mailed a cartoon in 2010 with the face of President Obama superimposed on a chimpanzee. Also pictured were two older chimpanzees described as “parents. The inscription on the cartoon read: “Now you know why – No birth certificate. The New York Post went well over the line of respectability by publishing a cartoon in 2009, in the wake of Connecticut police shooting a pet chimpanzee, depicting the authors of the stimulus bill as a dead chimpanzee. And who could forget Rep. Joe Wilson [R-S.C.], interrupting a 2009 presidential address on health care to Congress in by shouting, “You, lie! The personal attacks have not been limited to President Obama – his entire family has been attacked. Last week, Emmy-winning Univision host Rodner Figueroa was fired for saying, "Michelle Obama looks like she's part of the cast of Planet of the Apes. Michael O’Neal, Speaker of the Kansas House, circulated an email referring to the first lady as “Mrs. Yo’ Mama. Even Sasha and Malia have been targets of conservatives. They have been upbraided from everything from taking their spring break in the Bahamas to the clothes they wore when their father pardoned a Thanksgiving turkey. As Media Matters, the watchdog group, stated, “On May 27, [2010] President Obama explained at a press conference that he was reminded daily about the consequences of the oil spill by his daughter Malia who asked him did you plug the hole yet? while he was shaving. Both Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh saw fit to imitate Malia on air. No stunt is too low or too vile for conservatives who hate everything about Obama, including his race.

It was like a family reunion. Thousands of family members were gathering and it seemed like they wouldn’t stop coming. JOHNSON: Ms. Lynch must be confirmed as AG By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson represent the state of Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

Loretta Lynch, the president’s nominee to replace Eric Holder as the U.S. Attorney General, is poised to become the first African American woman to lead the Justice Department. Ms. Lynch is a Harvard-educated lawyer with a reputation as a tough prosecutor. Her impeccable record includes the successful prosecutions of high profile public corruption and civil rights cases, as well as cases in which public officials were physically assaulted. Since the events of 9/11, her office has been responsible for

the conviction of individuals involved in plotting terrorist attacks against this country. Time and time again, Ms. Lynch has demonstrated a commitment to keeping Americans safe. She has performed her job effectively, and without grandstanding. It is time for the Senate to do the same. The U.S. Constitution grants the Senate the power to provide “advice and consent” regarding Presidential appointments. This role of the Senate in confirming presidential appointees is an important one. Historically,

Senators will question a nominee on their record, and press them on important matters to determine if the nominee is qualified to advise the president. The Senate has already determined, on two separate occasions, that Ms. Lynch is a prosecutor with impeccable character and expertise. She has been confirmed by the Senate twice as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York under President Clinton in 2000, and again under President Obama in 2010. During her most recent Senate confirmation hearing Ms. Lynch performed admirably. She endured hours of grueling questions concerning her legal record, her views on immigration, limits to the president’s executive authority, and a host of other legal issues she may encounter as the

nation’s top law enforcement official. Ms. Lynch has the necessary qualifications to be our nation’s next Attorney General. From her stellar record as a federal prosecutor, to her prestigious academic pedigree, her experiences have prepared her to enforce and uphold both the letter and the spirit of the United States Constitution at the highest level. Shamefully, Senate Republicans are holding her confirmation hostage as they continue the battle over the president’s immigration policies. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell indicated that there would not be a confirmation vote for Ms. Lynch until the Senate finishes its debate over an anti-trafficking bill, which has been slowed by a fight over

an abortion provision. Yet again, Senate Republicans are using Ms. Lynch’s confirmation as political leverage for an unrelated matter. This is no way to govern. America has waited far too long for a new attorney general to be confirmed while justice hangs in the balance. The time has come for the Senate to act. There has been no substantive criticism of Ms. Lynch’s qualifications. She has worked to earn the support of a majority of the Senate. In fact, the Senate Judiciary Committee has already voted to approve the nomination. Yet the Republican Leadership has refused to bring her nomination to the floor. It is time for the Senate to provide the “advice and consent” that they are constitutionally empowered to give. .

HALL: Can you SAE Pissed Off?

I am so utterly pissed off right now. And don't even try to act like you're offended because I used the words pissed off when you’ve just been publicly pissed on. Once again y'all let a group of kids from Dallas lead a clan that punked you. They call you a Nigga in your face, and then you have the nerve to chide me for using “pissed off.” What upsets me more than anything else is that this news

You know she’s the lead actress in “black/ish” who was also the lead actress in “Girlfriends.” Let me say parenthetically that I am not in love with Tracee Ellis Ross because she's lightskinned-ed, or because she has that big butt that has become so fashionable. I can give you three reasons why I love Tracee Ellis Ross that are neither cosmetic nor chauvinistic. First and foremost, I love Tracee because I love her mother Diana Ross; possibly the greatest vocal diva in world history. Secondly, I love Tracee because you rarely see her hair chemically straightened or lengthened with extensions. She's completely

And finally I just believe that she is an intelligent, independent, innovative Black woman without excuses or apologies. I digressed. I must need to create a monologue about these ignorant-assed White boys and how they let their $5 mouths get their million dollar asses entrapped. They got caught reciting what they had been taught. "There will never be a nigger SAE. You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me. There will never be a nigger SAE." As I constantly convey in this column, being called a nigger does not bother me; being treated like a nigger is what angers me. Sadly, there is always ample reason for me to be irascible if

not irate. You also shouldn’t be surprised or taken aback that SAE’s campus mother was caught on YouTube spewing the word nigger in machine gun repetition. Let me clue you in. The “Den Mother” concept did not begin with the Boy Scouts; White mothers of vociferous and unrelenting hatred served as Den Mothers to the KKK and to practicing racists long before the Imperial Wizard made his American debut. Don’t be naïve

In my own remix, he essentially said you can’t fault the fruit, until you check the roots. We share the belief that the institution of racism is more dangerous than the insults that come as a by-product. What shattered me was the fact that there are at least 200,000 SAE alumni that have passed this song down for generations. Arguably 20% of SAE’s alums hold corporate decision-making positions for hiring, promotions and minority participation. I'm not saying it's not okay to get outraged when White folks say in public what White folks say in private all the time. I am saying that those sentiments are more dangerous in practice than in pronunciation. I wanted to discuss this enough to believe that our nation’s beautiful burgeoning bevy of new legacy of racial hatred is limited Black television shows. But at to the whims of White males. this point all I can say is that the As it was portrayed in Django, “Empire” still ain’t “Blackish” there were willing women who and that’s the “Scandal” that sewed hoods and sheets for their allows them to “Get Away with Murder.” Suffice it to say that spiritual soirees. and

I was seven years old at the time of Bloody Sunday and the black & white images of that violent day in 1965 are as troubling as ever. While broadcasts of the recent ceremonious festivities commemorating the 50th

anniversary of Bloody Sunday, aerial views of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, Congressman John Lewis’ testimonials and President Obama’s passionate speech are compelling and cause for reflection, what concerns me most is the ongoing question of equal justice in America. I’d like to know if any of the officers who took part in the Bloody Sunday attacks have been investigated, indicted or otherwise brought to justice for the hate crimes committed that day in Selma. Municipal records as well as news footage should help identify

the officers on duty that day who were involved in the brutal attacks. What troubles me deeply is the thought that as I watch the Selma broadcasts, watching right along with me in the comfort of their homes are some of the retired Alabama Troopers, retired Selma Police Officers and local officials who either had a direct hand in the violence of that day or in covering up the actions of those who did. The thought that they and their families watch the festivities with impunity, secure in the knowledge that they are in no danger of

prosecution for their despicable criminal acts is outrageous. That they may be enjoying state pensions and health benefits is absolutely unconscionable as we push harder and farther toward justice in America. I would like to know if a Special Prosecutor can be assigned to investigate the events of that day in spite of the 50 years that have lapsed. Only then can the contempt and bitterness that I feel as I’m reminded of that tragic day in American history begin to dissipate. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

CURRY: Obama proved that he is ‘Black Enough’ THE WHOLE TRUTH By George E. Curry

George E. Curry, former editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine, is editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service (NNPA.) He is a keynote speaker, moderator, and media coach. Curry can be reached through his Web site, www.georgecurry.

SELMA, Ala. (NNPA) – Throughout his campaign for the presidency, Barack Obama was dogged by one question: Is he Black enough? The question was repeated so often that after showing up late for an appearance at the 2008 annual convention of the National Association of Black Journalists in Las Vegas, Obama said, “I want to apologize for being late, but you guys keep asking whether I am Black enough.” After a 33-minute speech Saturday in Selma, Ala. commemorating the Selma to Montgomery March and passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, nobody was asking: Is Barack Obama Black enough? President Obama rarely discussed the issue of race in his first six years in office except in reaction to a major racial catastrophe such as the shooting deaths of Trayvon Martin in Florida and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. or the arrest of Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. for breaking into his own home. On Saturday, however, President Obama seemed comfortable discussing race in public, showing he has a deep appreciation for the accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement and quoting or referencing the Bible, Black spirituals, James Baldwin, Sojourner Truth, Fannie Lou Hamer, Langston Hughes, the Tuskegee Airmen, Jackie Robinson and even his favorite hip-hop artist Jay-Z. While connecting with African Americans, President Obama also underscored the significance of civil rights warriors making America hold true to its creed. “As John [Lewis] noted, there are places and moments in America where this nation’s destiny has been decided. Many are sites of war – Concord and Lexington, Appomattox, Gettysburg. Others are sites that symbolize the daring of America’s character – Independence Hall and Seneca Falls, Kitty Hawk and Cape Canaveral,” the president said. “Selma is such a place. In one afternoon 50 years ago, so much of our turbulent history — the stain of slavery and anguish of civil war; the yoke of segregation and tyranny of Jim Crow; the death of four little girls in Birmingham; and the dream of a Baptist preacher – all that history met on this bridge.” He made his comments with the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where civil rights marchers were attacked by Alabama State Troopers on “Bloody Sunday,” serving as a backdrop. “It was not a clash of armies, but a clash of wills; a contest to determine the true meaning of America,” Obama said. “And because of men and women like John Lewis, Joseph Lowery, Hosea Williams, Amelia Boynton, Diane Nash, Ralph Abernathy, C.T. Vivian, Andrew Young, Fred Shuttlesworth, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and so many others, the idea of a just America and a fair America, an inclusive America, and a generous America – that idea ultimately triumphed.” President Obama also acknowledged the contributions of thousands whose name will never be known to the public yet played a critical role in securing the right

courage of those who marched that day, then all of us are called to possess their moral imagination. All of us will need to feel as they did the fierce urgency of now. All of us need to recognize as they did that change depends on our actions, on our attitudes, the things we teach our children. And if we make such an effort, no matter how hard it may sometimes seem, laws can be passed, and consciences can be stirred, and consensus can be built.” Obama addressed two hot-button issues – the criminal justice system and voter disenfranchisement efforts – directly. “With such an effort, we can make sure our criminal justice system serves all and not just some. Together, we can raise the level of mutual trust that policing is built on – the idea that police officers are members of the community they risk their lives to protect, and citizens in Ferguson and New York and Cleveland, they just want the same thing young people here marched for 50 years ago – the protection of the law. Together, we can address unfair sentencing and overcrowded prisons, and the stunted circumstances that rob too many boys of the chance to become men, and rob the nation of too many men who could be good dads, and good workers, and good neighbors. With effort, we can roll back poverty and the roadblocks to opportunity. Americans don’t accept a free ride for anybody, nor do we believe in equality of outcomes. But we do expect equal opportunity.” Regarding Republican-led efforts to suppress the Black and Latino vote, Obama said: “Right now, in 2015, 50 years after Selma, there are laws across this country designed to make it harder In Selma, the President greets former foot soldier Amelia Boynton Robinson, 103 years old, backstage before the for people to vote. As we speak, more of ceremony. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza) such laws are being proposed. Meanwhile, the Voting Rights Act, the culmination of so much blood, so much sweat and tears, the product of so much sacrifice in the face of wanton violence, the Voting Rights Act stands weakened, its future subject to political rancor.” But the problem does not stop there, Obama said. “Of course, our democracy is not the task of Congress alone, or the courts alone, or even the president alone. If every new voter-suppression law was struck down today, we would still have, here in America, one of the lowest voting rates among free peoples. Fifty years ago, registering to vote here in Selma and much of the South meant guessing the number of jellybeans in a jar, the number of bubbles on a bar of soap. It meant risking your dignity, and sometimes, your life. “What’s our excuse today for not voting? How do we so casually discard the right for which so many fought? How do we so fully give away our power, our voice, in shaping America’s future? Why are we pointing to somebody else when we could take the time just to go to the polling The President hugs Rep. Day 1 Saturday Selma Presidential Address When I first heard the news that I would have the opportunity to go to Selma, Alabama for the 50th anniversary of the Selma march, I knew it would be an awesome opportunity. I packed my bags, met up with radio personality Dareia Tolbert and drove nine hours to the place where my ancestors fought, bled and died to help ensure the freedom I now enjoy. Once we arrived we checked into the Holiday Inn Express in Selma around 5am. I immediately met a family from Birmingham, brought in to provide their special pound cakes to the Jubilee’s dignitaries and celebrities. After taking a quick nap, then showering, we were on our way to hear President Obama deliver a compelling speech. He was scheduled to land at 11am on Air Force One, and I was going to cover his arrival but I was afraid I would miss the speech on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Traffic as you can imagine was terrible, most people got out of their cars and walked 30 minutes or more to the site of the speech. Tens of Thousands of people were there. Young, and old crowding around just to hear from the President and other dignitaries. The opportunity to listen to President Obama was surreal! But it wasn't an easy task. Blocked roads, heavy traffic, tight security and tens of thousands of people made it a battle just to get to the media area near the President. Fortunately, I was blessed to follow a mentor and one of the heads of Pubic Relations through the tight crowds to get to the media area. Note to self: be earlier! Once inside, they had several staging areas for the media. Most Presidential events will put the media in one row to park their news vehicles. In this case it was not the case, they beefed it up for security. They also were very tight on making sure the Presidents were safe. We were able to make our way to the media area where we were credentialed to take pictures and record the speech. Georgia Congressman and Civil Rights activist John Lewis gave a rousing speech. After all, he was one of the foot soldiers who took a beating at the bridge 50 years ago. He said he would've never imagined being there that day, delivering a speech as a member of congress! President George W. Bush and Former First Lady Barbara were on hand to show their support. First Lady Michelle looked fabulous as always, and sat proudly on the stage. The Presidential speech was uplifting and many people were able to feel the real emotion in his voice as he talked about equality and recognized that he was standing there, 50 years after Bloody Sunday as a Black President. I saw a lot of celebrities, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tom Joyner, Victoria Rowell and others were also there. I must admit the weather was perfect, and pretty warm. Some people even

passed out from dehydration. Georgia Representative Calvin Smyre (who I've reported on since I was an intern in 2002!) was glad to see me. I also met the mother of slain unarmed Ferguson teen Michael Brown. During Mister Obama's speech there was a drumming sound and I realized that there were a few protesters chanting Black Lives Matter. I recognized one of the girls as being with a group traveling from Ferguson. It quickly was squashed, after one of the members had a medical emergency and was taken out by police for medical help. It was unknown why, or what but interesting that they chose that time to interrupt the Presidents speech. President Obama continued his speech, and eventually addressed the senseless deaths of unarmed Black Men. Once the President spoke, he discussed the importance of unity, continuing the strength and hope of those who were there on Bloody Sunday and most importantly working together to create a peaceful, unified Country. The speech was amazing. There was also a parade and festival with vendors and amazing soul food, food trucks. The cell service was extremely slow and I couldn't post any pictures of videos to social media during the day and it was extremely hard at night.

Day 2 Bloody Sunday Anniversary March Close your eyes and imagine the biggest group of people you can imagine, now imagine them standing side by side for miles filling the streets and town of Selma. That's what the streets of Selma looked like as preparation for the Anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march took place. People arrived early for the pre-march rally and stood for hours in the hot sun to march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Once the march began, everyone walked slowly. Some chanting, some singing spirituals and others quietly absorbing the moment. It was amazing, I literally cried...I really broke down and let a few tears fall down...I feel like it was a historical moment that everyone should experience. How my ancestors were able to walk so far with dress shoes, knowing that their lives were at risk, makes me proud to be an African-American. It takes a lot of work and a lot of strength to risk your life. After we walked in solidarity, across the bridge we ended at the stage where the BET & Centric Networks held the March Concert. I really enjoyed the show! Every possible celebrity was there. There were so many people on the bridge, at one point there were reports that the bridge was closed because of so many people walking the bridge. The great part, is that the entertainers weren't paid to perform and did it because they wanted to contribute to the movement. Each performer sang one or two songs and the crowd went wild! I was blessed to have full access and while backstage I snapped a few photos and interviews for this blog. I talked to Ruben Studdard who told me the performances were just a soundtrack to the movement. Operating on a Tight Budget Dear Alma, My husband was laid off and I’m only working part time, so we’re having a hard time paying our bills and making ends meet. We hardly have enough money to pay the rent, and every day we worry about how we can make it. When my grandmother died, she left me some of her valuables – a beautiful ornate mirror, fine china and some jewelry. My husband told me to sell some of the jewelry so that we could get some money. I don’t want to do that, but I know we need to pay our bills. What do you think? Name withheld Awww, sweetie, I’m sorry. I know this is a difficult time for you and your husband. You didn’t mention any kids, so I assume it’s just the two of you. I think you guys should exhaust all of your resources and make selling your grandmother’s heirlooms the very last (about to be evicted) resort. Once it’s gone, you can’t get it back. The decision to sell something so precious should be your individual decision, not a joint one. She was your grandmother, so you have a ton of love invested in her memory. It’s really not his place to suggest you cut those ties that bind. I’m sure, given the right amount of thought and sacrifice, you two can come up with other options. I’d suggest, if you haven’t already, putting yourselves on a super-duper strict budget. I’m talking about the oatmeal, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, ramen noodles every night budget! Vegetables will become a luxury and replace your meat options. You should also take a look at what I call your “side bills” and see what you can live without. Side bills are things like cable, wi-fi, cell phones and gym memberships. Cut back on gas, which can be expensive. Try walking places or taking the bus. Maybe you can work full-time until your husband finds a job. Keep your head up. Things will get better; it won’t be like this forever. Alma

Nation Building at Paul Quinn under Sorrell On Friday, November 7, 2008 As attorney and businessman Michael J. Sorrell was installed as the 34th president of Dallas’ Paul Quinn College and hundreds of alumni, students, faculty, staff, family members and supporters were in attendance to share in this era of “change.” Elected officials, including then-Mayor Tom Leppert and Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas) were among the many speakers who extolled the virtues of Mr. Sorrell and encouraged citizens to join in supporting the oldest historically black college west of the Mississippi. “He has brought passion and love,” said Mr. Leppert. “He brings a fresh perspective and renewed commitment. He has revamped admissions policy, overhauled a number of department and developed partnerships. He sees the possibilities and I am proud of what he has accomplished thus far.” Sen. West, who presented a proclamation to the president, urged financial support of the Paul Quinn and pointed out that state support has increased to $650,000 annually. “Surely right in the city of Dallas we can match what they give and do better,” said Mr. West, whose message was echoed from several other speakers as they pledged their support. Mr. Sorrell praised a rich heritage and stressed the importance of insuring Paul Quinn’s future and encouraged support of the oldest historically black college west of the Mississippi. Calling himself an activist, instead of a “traditional academician,” he said he learned about the importance and beauty of historically black colleges, from his mother and grandmother, both graduates of HBCUs. “I learned to love this college long before

I came here,” he said, as he discussed the need for black colleges and the demise of Bishop College. “As I assume the presidency, I know what I am facing. We can and we must do better.” And while the school has a laundry list of needs, Paul Quinn’s 34th president says that does not mean the school will accept

Note: Following his inauguration, then students Oliver and Hillard wrote about their new president. Michael Sorrell knows how to take care of business. As many know, Michael J. Sorrell is the 34th president of Paul Quinn College. During his reign as president, he has transformed the school into something very positive for students, faculty and the community. While at the college, he has established the Presidential Scholars program, created a school-wide business casual dress code, revamped various school divisions and departments and he has established partnerships with Habitat for Humanity and Home Depot. But little do many know, Sorrell had a very prestigious life before ever stepping foot on Paul Quinn’s campus. President Sorrell obtained his undergraduate degree from Oberlin College, where he was also a star basketball player. From Oberlin, he went on to obtain his Juris Doctorate and Master’s degree from Duke University. Having obtained his degrees from these prestigious schools, President Sorrell knows the importance of a good education and will accept nothing less from his students. Before becoming President of Paul Quinn College, Mr. Sorrell was a professor at the school. Prior to this, he was the cofounder of an organization that represented athletes and coaches, Victor Credo. Through his hard work and never give up attitude, he has been able to be successful even when he was in charge of making key decisions for multiple athletes and companies. Before Paul Quinn came into his life, Mr. Sorrell served as Director of Communications and Government Relations for Dallas 2012, Executive Director of the Global Games, and he has also served as the Special Assistant to the Executive Director of the President’s Initiative on Race. President Sorrell is one of the hardest working men in the Dallas area. With the school in the news constantly with bad publicity, he works every day twice as hard to make sure there is always a success story coming from Paul Quinn College. At the end of the day if asked he is only “trying to help his people get to a better place.”

A Great Ending to a New Beginning

Omega Alpha Omega welcomed to North Texas

By Eva Coleman

They entered the room in a traditional strut. Clad in white, 60 women were presented as charter members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated’s newest graduate chapter, Omega Alpha Omega, planting its ivy in one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. Frisco, Texas is now officially seeing pink and green. The chartering luncheon on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at the Westin Stonebriar Hotel was open to the public. The room was packed as attendees got an overview of what the Pink Tea Rose Sisters of Service interest group have been up to and a glimpse of service to all mankind to come from Omega Alpha Omega. “Entry into AKA is a gateway to service, not a stepping stone to status,” 21st South Central Regional Director Shirley R. Fisher boldly proclaimed. Fisher and other prominent members of the sisterhood, as well as other supporters and guests, offered words of encouragement during the momentous occasion. Current South Central Regional Director Chelle Luper Wilson gave a spirited speech showcasing her rhyming

“We saw in her someone who would benefit and has the ability to face difficulty and triumph,” Murchison said. Leaders from surrounding graduate AKA chapters in North Texas were present to show their support. The North Dallas Suburbia chapter of the National PanHellenic Council presented Omega Alpha Omega president Patrice Withers-Stephens with her first gavel. KDFW Fox 4’s Latoya Silmon, also a member of AKA, served as Mistress of Ceremony and kept the event flowing and timely. Speaking of time, Tuere Williams who serves as the chapter’s 1st Vice President placed strong emphasis on the time they learned of their approval. “February 16, 2015 at 9:22 PM,” she joyfully stated. Williams also shared the mantra for the group, which they’ve been masterfully doing all along, as pointed out by several speakers. “Lead big, serve big, love big,” Williams said. And they’ve definitely got a big landscape to cover. The Omega Alpha Omega chapter serves the cities of Denton, Frisco, Little Elm, Prosper and The Colony.

Selma @50: Malcolm X on my mind for Historical Ride By Thomas Muhammad I hadn't driven from Dallas to Selma in maybe eight years, but it was the way I had chosen to take this historical trip. It had been after all 50 years since that infamous terroristic attack when white racist police storm troopers beat and gassed 600 innocent unarmed peaceful civil rights marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge. During my drive I played over a dozen speeches of Brother Malcolm X driving to Selma and back to Dallas ending with his "Last Message" speech, which turned out to be the most powerful presentation Malcolm ever made because it came 17 days after he had spoken to over 500 people at Brown Chapel Church in Selma, Alabama and one day after his home had been firebombed while he, his wife Betty and their four young daughters slept on a snowy night. This speech brings the righteous movement of black people in America then and now more into focus. Over the years I've found that only by listening to Malcolm's speeches in their "entirety" can you really get a full sense of where we were and where we should be going as a people in America.

Her passenger, Leroy Motten, a member of SNCC at the time who quickly smeared some of Ms. Liuzzo's blood on himself and played dead was sent out of Selma by his parents because they feared he would be found out and killed. Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

Drop and Give Me 20 There is a perspective prevalent in our faith that our suffering is an integral part of God’s plan to ready us for the struggle of spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. Depending on your point of view you might think that to be a fact of faith. I just don’t believe it’s always true. However, I do believe suffering in some ways is a prerequisite for strengthening one’s spiritual muscle. Like Jesus in the desert, you do have to get ready for what’s in store for you traveling down God’s path. For me it’s always been hard to respect the opinion of someone who has led the so called “charmed life” or, someone who was born with the proverbial silver spoon in a cavity free mouth. It’s hard, if not impossible (for me), to listen to someone talk with certainty about things they’ve never seen or places they’ve never been. My belief is that God teaches in a manner few of us will ever truly understand. I believe that when He chooses you, when it’s your time, He has a unique way of communicating who’s really in charge. And, if the truth be told, only He is. Experience has taught me that when God is talking to you, eventually you come to know it. Your recognition of this can come with a price, if you get my meaning. Take notes on this. “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but (rather) painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11. As far as I’m concerned, we’re all in training, believe it or not, to fight in God’s war. Whether being forged in a fiery furnace or stuck in a tailspin of perceived despair and hopelessness, each one of us is being battle tested in anticipation that one day, we will be called to arms. This struggle, these experiences, they bring about wisdom; a spiritual wisdom from a spiritual perspective that I believe

we are commanded to share. It’s called testimony! Otherwise, God keeps you in a perpetual classroom where life constantly gives you a new place to go to the bathroom. You haven’t learned anything, so life keeps kicking your…well, you get the picture. When you finally realize the one trying to tell you something is God, then a wondrous thing begins to happen. You listen more intently and learn more eagerly. Like the child who discovers walking leads to the joy of running, or the baby who discovers his own hand, the possibilities seem endless. The mind says ‘tell me more.’ The spirit says, ‘thank you Jesus.’ At that very moment, it my belief that God let’s us know we’re able to withstand, overcome, rise above and win the battle of carrying the message of salvation. Christ is savior. At that moment, we also move from being in the classroom to being on the battlefield where Satan keeps score. You remember those days back in school when you actually studied and were prepared for the test? Confidence oozed from you. When God has been the lesson planner, the study partner, the instructor, it doesn’t matter how much Satan wants it to be a Net Flix Night. “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.” James 1:12. Our job then is to recognize and represent; recognize the hell we think we’re going through has heaven as its reward. Your struggles are not without purpose. The most important message of the day is to understand who (Jesus) has suffered the most and why. “It is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.” Luke 12:32. Remember it’s already yours. May God bless and keep you always.

Mom’s friend turned on me Dear Alma, My husband was laid off after 16 years on the job. My salary alone wasn’t enough to keep up with the bills, so we decided moving in with my mom was the best thing. She has been having health problems anyway and is in need of care, so this works out for the all of us. My mom was in the hospital a few months back and was talking out of her mind. She told the doctors that I had been mistreating her, which wasn’t true. During that time her best friend and neighbor visited regularly and knew everything that was going on. I’ve know this woman all of my life. While my mom was in the hospital this friend totally turned on me. I think she was even talking about me to the other neighbors. We had a big falling out about my mom’s care and what was really the truth. It was ugly! Anyway, I say all this to give you some background because she recently died and my mom wants me to cook and help her family out with her funeral. I’m thinking she must be crazy. Remember this woman has been awful to me, about all I can do is write a check. My friend told me about your column so I thought I’d ask your opinion? T.B. in the Bahamas

Area Pastors & Worship Leaders Unite March 20-21 DFW “Worship Summit”

Every week, thousands of churches across the DFW region convene for worship services. During these life-changing gatherings, amazing music, liturgical dance, and speaking presentations are offered. All this is a part of the dynamic worship legacy of today’s progressive churches, however, rarely do churches of different denominations and demographics come together to simply…worship! Uniting worshipers is one of the goals of The Gospel Heritage Foundation— an international organization that seeks to preserve and perpetuate the great Gospel legacy through inspiration and education. On this Friday and Saturday, March 20-21, a Worship Summit, open to the entire community will feature a Friday evening worship multi-denominational worship service (7pm) and a Saturday educational session (8:30am – 1pm). “These two days will have a profound impact and effect on your life,” says event organizer, Pastor Rodney Frazier (Regional Director). The host pastor, Pastor G. Laine Robinson (The Verge, 3838 TX-408 Spur, Dallas, TX 75236) and his staff have agreed to host this one-of-a-kind summit in the DFW Region. Pastor Robinson remarked, “If you are ready to cultivate and enhance your worship life, this summit

is for you.” General members as well as musical artists/worship leaders should attend the Friday night service, which begins at 7pm with special speakers: Pastor Stephen Brown (Greater Bethlehem BC); Pastor Dr. Quida F. Lee (Church of the Disciple); Pastor Patrick J. Diggs (New Fellowship BC, Ft. Worth) along with special musical guests. Pastor Darryl Blair will serve as emcee. On Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm, worship seminars for Pastors, worship leaders, musicians, ministers of music and creative arts personnel will be conducted. These seminars will focus on excellence in administration, organization/ planning, presentation and relationships. Special guests will include: Roy Cotton, Pastor Renee Hornbuckle and Asaph Ward. “The mission of Gospel Heritage is to be a catalyst for rebranding worship as a lifestyle “not” a musical style,” says Dr. Teresa Hairston (GH President/Founder). “This Summit will move attendees toward a mindset of true transformation in the way we “think” about worship.” All events will be held at “The Verge” (3838 TX-408 Spur, Dallas, TX 75236); Friday night services begin at 7pm. Saturday seminars begin with a continental breakfast followed by seminars. There is a $15 donation requested. For more information: 770.866.2427 (Gospel Heritage) or gospelheritage@aol.com

Excuse me T.B., while I sip on my blueberry tea. I wanna make sure I’ve got a hold of all that’s happening in your house – oh wait it isn’t, it’s your mama’s home. Now that we’ve established authority, I can understand how difficult it is to find your adult-self and your husband, moving in with your mother. You and I both can agree and recognize, clearly it wasn’t ever a part of the game plan. But let’s not be ungrateful for this blessing, at least ya’ll have somewhere to go, so don’t get it twisted. While I can sympathize with your situation (sip, sip, aaahh) hold up, why are we talking about you and your immature issues when you’re mother just lost her dear friend? Since you asked, I gotta tell you ~ this shouldn’t be about you, it’s all about your mama! Yes, by all means you should help. This woman and your mom have had a long, loving and valuable friendship over the years. I’m sure, similar to Lucy & Ethel, Florida & Willona, Maary & Rose, you hear what I’m sayin? These women, although on television, lived as neighbors who took great care of each other. When you saw one, you saw the other. They knew each other’s business and everybody else’s business, too, for that matter, LOL. I too grew up with these friendships beautifully displayed in my old neighborhood. I watched grown women weathering the various storms of life, supporting each other through marriage and children, sometimes divorce, the loss of a child and even widowhood. Can’t you see, your mother is asking this of you because it’s just as if an aunt has died? It’s all the same to her – her best friend was just like family. She loved her and her love for her friend (your play aunt) outweighs anything you can argue, cuss or fuss about. So simmer down, reach for a cup of compassion, your mother is in a very fragile place, bless her heart. I know I hear you, ya’ll had a fallen out, WHATEVER! Even if your mother was speaking out of her mind, as you say, her friend would only show solidarity towards your mom. That’s just the way it is between friends. Fall off your high horse before I push you off, forgive that woman for the misunderstanding between the two of you, and let it go. Pick up the phone right now and offer your services to her family. You hear me! Put on your mother’s shoes and pearls, and get to stepping. Don’t you sit down and take your shoes off until the memorial, funeral, wake or whatever is over. Your mom has lived long enough to know you can’t truly love without giving, and the giving doesn’t have anything to do with money. It’s about giving of your time, offering up support that comes from your heart and unconditional care that isn’t measured. When death takes a loved one, there’s no room for discontent or the holding of a grudge. Your mother is looking to see the best rise out of her daughter, stop acting like a child. Mind your manners girl, we both know while she was in her right mind, she taught you better. Alma -

Edna Pemberton shares experiences and pictures from Dallas March While being a foster child in Chicago, Dr. M.L. King Jr. came to my church, Greater Bethesda and spoke and after speaking he asked for kids and you to join the Freedom Riders...I came home and packed up my things to join the Freedom Riders...but my beloved foster mom, wouldn't let me join the Freedom Riders because she loved me so...I cried all night because I wanted to join Dr. M.L. King Jr....when the freedom bus came by to pick me up...I just waved them on still crying. When the opportunity came again, where I could walk across a bridge of hope...I walked, sang, prayed, waved my hands and joined others... remembering myself as child wanting to join Dr. M. King Jr. March...well as I told my family(with tears in my eyes) nothing is stopping me now. Even today a group of us are still honoring the movement of Selma Bloody Sunday. Today, talk with your family about how it is important to reflect and honor the past, while you march towards a better future. OH!....This time, as we marched...we had police protection, they were friendly.

Students to commemorate Historic Selma March

State Senator Royce West (D-Dallas) has called together students from more than 20 student government and youth organizations across Dallas County to reenact the historic march that took place 50 years ago on Saturday March 21, 1965 in Selma, Alabama in protest of restrictive voting laws. The tribute to those who fought for voting rights legislation will take place Saturday, March 21, 2015, on the Continental Avenue Pedestrian Bridge, located at 101-115 Continental Avenue, west of downtown Dallas. The march will begin at 1:00 p.m. "It can seem that today's youth are far removed from what young people, both Black and White, were involved in across the South some 50 years ago," said Senator West. "But we as adults, as leaders and parents and as beneficiaries, many who were alive in 1965, cannot allow those efforts to be confined to video images and history books. They happened and those sacrifices helped pave the way for the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that replaced, for the better, a patchwork of laws across a number of mostly Southern states that restricted the ability of minority citizens in this country to cast ballots for their candidates of choice. "Now 50 years later, we are faced with new challenges to the right to vote, but the biggest obstacle we face may be that of voter apathy," Senator West added. "It's time for a new generation to become involved." Students will symbolically reenact the successful March 21, 1965 march from Selma, (Dallas County, Alabama) to the state capitol in Montgomery. It was the third attempt following the first march, now called "Bloody Sunday," two weeks earlier when state and local lawmen attacked peaceful demonstrators. The 54-mile march was successfully completed under a federal court order and the protection of some 4,000 federal troops and state police. President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law less than five months later. Following this year's commemorative march, students will discuss their thoughts about what happened in 1965 and how it impacts America today. Schools from Dallas, DeSoto, Duncanville and Cedar Hill will participate including middle schools Curstistene McCowan, DeSoto East, Permenter, Barack Obama, Seagoville and the St. Philip's School and Community Center. High schools include Madison, Skyline, West Mesquite, A. Maceo Smith, Sunset, Pinkston, MacArthur,

Street renamed in honor of Elsie Faye Heggins

On Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2015 the Dallas City Council approved renaming about three miles of Hatcher Street in South Dallas for Mrs. Elsie Heggins, a political organizer remembered for helping to open doors at City Hall, holding weekly town hall meetings to review and discuss the upcoming council agenda with the community, refusing to bow down to the power elite and training a whole new cadre of fearless leader/servants to work for poor and marginalized families in the City. On Saturday, March 14, 2015 family, friends and long time supporters gathered on the corner of Malcolm X and Hatcher Street (across from Lincoln High) for the renaming ceremony.

Sometimes God calms the storm. Other times God calm his child. Which will God have to do for you today? And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, sleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, care thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them; why are ye fearful? How is it that ye have NO faith?
