Selma full of lessons for The Bowtie Boys
When hundreds of thousands gathered in Selma, AL to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday March, Texas was well represented and The Bowtie Boys were counted among the masses. The Bowtie Boyshave been gaining a reputation for being respectful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about life. They see a bright future as they continue to learn and experience life. The bus trip to Selma was an opportunity for them to display their many talents, while also learning about a pivotal point in history. In the future, there will be a film documenting their journey to the town that put voting rights on the minds of
many American citizens, as well as people around the world as they watched men, women and children beaten, plowed down with water hoses, arrested and degraded as they peacefully marched on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, to call attention to one of America’s many injustices. The Bowtie Boys started as the brainchild of Bryant E. Pearson at North Garland Baptist Fellowship in Garland, Texas. According to Pearson, “As I begin to read articles about black young men and how they were fairing in our country it made me sad and then I got mad and decided to do something about it.” Pearson said the group was created to change America.
“We want to change how young black men perceived themselves and how others perceive them,” he explained. “This is the most difficult task that I have tackled in my life. There is a world out there that is out to destroy them and we need men of every race to stand up and lead these young men to the promise land of the American Dream.” Their many projects include: Scripture Memory - Every young man to memorize one scripture a week. Vocabulary - Each young man will memorize five new words a week for a total of 20 new words a month. He will attempt to use those words in his daily

verbal and written language. Math Fluency- Every young man that is part of our group will become fact fluent. Additionally, the young men are taught leadership skills, how to change a tire and the oil in a car, and they are encouraged to participate in “non-traditional” sports, in hopes of obtaining scholarships that go unused. “I still believe that these young mens' best days are ahead of them,” said Pearson, as he encourages support of the young men. “Come and help me make sure that they are.” Find out more about the Bowtie Boys, or volunteer at www.thebowtieboys.net or call 972-202-6406.

Black. Lurking just beyond the obvious tie is the quality of their blackness – they are all gifted and confident in their identities. It seems in 21st century America to be young, gifted and Black is now a crime; an offense against society’s typecasting of Black youth as violent, unintelligent and worthless. The intensity of these assaults – oral and physical – is sharpened by decades of conditioned hate, forged by theories of Black inferiority and White supremacy. The venomous words electronically spat upon Davis and Wells, and the force leveled upon Martese Johnson, are simply the byproducts of the permissiveness of racism in our nation. It is the success of Davis, Wells and Johnson that defies and counters the mythology of Black depravity. And it is success that triggers the backlash, awakens the racist beast and brings to the surface sentiments that heretofore might have only been expressed in private conversations. By succeeding these young people frustrate those who harbor bias and leave them little room to fully exercise their demons. For some, touch pad keystrokes become a potent weapon to voice hatred from afar; sort of the lazy man’s racism that tempers it but still empowers the perpetrator. The police involved in the micro-aggression at the University of Virginia? They were acting under the assumption of “Black threat and sending a message in the process. This is the cruel joke played upon Black youth in America.
The public message communicated to young Black women and men is to pursue excellence and rise above challenges, and be exemplary in their civic lives. That message is countered by the aural and visual assault upon their sensibilities that reduces them to thugged out and hyper-sexualized caricatures. When young Blacks rise above this stereotyping, they are then reduced to racial objects, ridiculed for being audacious in their success. Mo’ne Davis was a “slut in the eyes of a young White male because he believes her success is undeserving of the attention it is receiving. The privileged White daughters of a basketball coach of a major university made the determination a grand jury could not, on a charge a university could not prove and was forced to reach settlement with the accused. Still, Dez Wells is branded a rapist because he excelled on the basketball court. Martese Johnson was just another young Black guy, a human punching bag for police who could casually dismiss the thought that they were bloodying a student enrolled in the nearby prestigious university, or more importantly, a human being and someone’s son. Collectively, these incidents bring into sharper focus the racist rants of former University of Oklahoma SAE fraternity members in that now infamous videotape. This is the world in which young Black Americans live. It is a sobering reality that a generation that many hoped would truly be post-racial (as if that will ever be the case) is more deeply entrenched in racism than the prior generation. And institutional racism has a vice grip upon young Blacks that is more consequential than white mobs of decades past. It’s enough to make me take a trip to the nearest Starbucks. I’ll take a latte with some truth talk.
SMITH: Marching in Dallas and remembering our history One African American Woman’s Opinion by Cheryl Smith
When thousands gathered in Dallas for a re-enactment of the historic Selma to Montgomery March, it was a vision worth remembering. Organized and hosted by Texas State Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas), the event was very inspiring and thought-provoking. Citizens of all ages joined in the March and we heard from speakers, young and old. There was music that told the stories of struggles in America and there was talk of hope, love and equality. It felt so good to be out participating with my people in
Dallas, because just earlier in the month, actually two weeks prior, I was in Selma, Alabama with people from all across the country and around the world. A special thanks to Sen. West for his visionary leadership. I’m sure there were students who knew nothing of the struggle for voting rights, but they got a history lesson that day. There were also adults who learned something from the experience. And we need more history lessons, like the ones that will be shared at the celebration to commemorate the naming of a
street in honor of the Honorable Al Lipscomb, on April 11 in Dallas, and a visit to Dallas from two noted educators Dr. Leonard
Jeffries and Professor James Small on April 25 at the Frederick Douglass Social Center. I’m all for sharing information
in our community instead of complaining about what our communities don’t know. I know it’s not in your job description to educate our communities, Sen. West, nor was it probably in Sankofa Global’s business plan but I am so glad we have bold leadership that makes educating our people a priority. In coming months, there will be more information presented about 150 anniversary Juneteenth celebrations in the area. For over 40 years Fort Worth native Opal Lee has dedicated herself to sharing information about Juneteenth. She hopes that June 19 will one day be declared a national holiday. Regardless, she will continue educating, enlightening and celebrating the freeing of enslaved Africans in America. What are you doing?

HALL: No Party Favors! Quit Playin’ Vincent Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award-winning columnist. The odyssey and obstruction orbiting a pending Senate confirmation of Loretta Lynch as the next Attorney General was making me ill. Politics is politics, but when you add in race, it takes on a
different dimension. Since the inauguration service which placed that synthetic scepter in the bronzed hands of America’s first African-American President, the world has come to realize how much race plays into every
definition and every decision in America. Loretta Lynch is just another story in “The Naked City.” (Google it!!) Even the ultra-liberal talking heads have tried to skirt the racial aspect of this stupid ploy by the
Republican Party. Many deny race as a factor. I ran across an article in the New York Daily News that confirming for me that the undercurrents of racism are as far-reaching and flagrant as always.
Loretta Lynch
“A 10-year-old girl was trying to have a birthday party and a race relations discussion broke out. African-American child Harmony Jones invited a friend to her party on Friday night in Memphis, Tenn., but the young girl got a stunning magic marker note in return: her friend’s dad wouldn’t let her attend due to the birthday girl’s race, WREG-TV reported. The unidentified child wrote in blue, green and pink, “Maby [SIC] I will not be able to come to your birthday sleepover, because my dad will not let me go because you are black.” The girl added, “Not trying to be races [SIC], but my mom let me go. Happy birthday!”” Harmony’s unfortunate story
mentally tethered me to a story I had seen by Rachel Maddow about the “lynching” of Loretta. Rachel Maddow is a Rhodes Scholar whose reports and reporting are always academic and well excavated. Here’s my thumbnail sketch of the 10 minute plus feature she ran. Loretta Elizabeth Lynch grew up in Durham, North Carolina where she attend a mostly White elementary school. At an early age, she scored so high on a standardized test, that school officials there required that she take the test again. She did and scored even higher. By the end of Loretta’s senior year in 1977, she became the valedictorian of her high school class. District officials were concerned that naming Loretta as the lone valedictorian would create racial upheaval; they decided to make Loretta covaledictorian that year, with two other White students. Loretta excelled as an undergrad at Harvard and earned an academic sleepover with the institution which resulted in her receiving the historically coveted Harvard Law degree. Loretta eventually accepted a highpaying job at a private law firm. She quit that lucrative position after six years because, being
the patriot that she is, wanted to parlay her degrees and expertise for the good of the American people. She made the ultimate economic sacrifice and gave up 75% of her salary and probably 95% of her potential wealth to work for her country. At her posts with the feds she has won cases against scandalridden high-profile politicians as well as major terrorism cases. Loretta Lynch, working as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York has been heralded for the successful conviction of an organized ring of convenience store owners who brought in immigrants and forced them into slave labor in their stores. The media hastens to remind us that Loretta is the second longest candidate to wait for the job, citing Edwin Meese as an example. However, Meese’s conformation was inordinately long because he was investigated for not disclosing interest-free loans that he had been given. By the time this missive is published, Loretta Lynch may have been confirmed and this may be obsolete. But the issue of race has no expiration date and it ain’t been no party or party favors for Loretta Lynch or Harmony Jones. White men seem to be giving each of them a rough go of it.

America needs to stop jailing so many non-violent offenders MY TRUTH By Rick Perry Rick Perry is the former governor of Texas.
There’s a growing debate in America today about criminaljustice reform, and the best way to address non-violent, drugrelated crimes. Unfortunately, nationwide our focus has centered more on growing our prison populations than on getting to the root cause of these crimes: addiction. This has taken its toll in many ways, from the families that are torn apart when a loved one is sent to jail to the taxpayers who are left footing an ever-increasing bill for our criminal-justice systems. But there is a better way. I am a firm believer that the states are laboratories of innovation— that, given the flexibility, they will implement policies that work most efficiently to address the needs of their citizens. And the criminal-justice debate is no different. Consider the Texas Experience with Criminal-Justice Reform I know this first-hand. You see, Texas was one of many states that spent billions locking up kids for minor offenses. In jail,
these individuals learned how to become hardened criminals. Out of jail, they often repeated their crimes. The result was a significant fiscal burden on taxpayers and a segment of society shut out from hope and opportunity. And while arrests for violent and property offenses steadily declined throughout the 1990s, drug-related arrests increased by more than 60 percent. We knew we needed to do something, and do it quickly. That’s why, when John Creuzot, a Democratic judge from Dallas, shared an idea that would change the way we handled cases of first-time, nonviolent drug offenders, I listened. As the founder of one of the first drug courts in Texas, Creuzot argued that, for many low-risk, non-violent offenders, incarceration is not the best solution, and can increase the odds that an individual will commit additional crimes after release. Just as importantly, he emphasized that by treating addiction as a disease, rather than simply punishing the crimes it
compels, we could give new hope to people trying to get their lives back. His evidence was compelling. Recidivism in his program was 68 percent lower than other state courts, and every dollar he spent saved $9 in future costs. So in 2007, with broad support from Republicans and Democrats, Texas changed course.
Here’s What We Did that Worked We expanded our commitment to drug courts that allow offenders to stay out of jail if they agreed to comprehensive supervision, drug testing, and treatment. We invested more in treatment and rehabilitation programs for drug addiction and mental illness, and shifted our focus to diversionary programs like community supervision. We reformed our approach to parole, imposing graduated sanctions for minor violations instead of immediate re-incarceration. We also implemented common-sense policies, such as allowing individuals to earn their way off probation through exemplary conduct and by achieving benchmarks, such as obtaining a degree. We passed legislation allowing nonviolent offenders to earn up to 20 percent of their terms by completing treatment and vocational

programs proven to reduce recidivism. The results have been extraordinary. Texas’s crime rate has dropped to its lowest point since 1968 and, during my tenure, Texas’ crime rate shrank by almost 24 percent. In fact, for the first time in state history, Texas is closing prisons without replacing them—three units since 2011. On top of that, this more efficient approach has saved Texas taxpayers $2 billion.
The Best Benefits Are Personal But perhaps the most significant result is the countless individuals and families who are better off today because these Texans were given a chance to minimize the damage they had done to their lives. And for some
people, a chance is all they really need. We need more of this forward-thinking policy making around the country to continue to improve our criminal-justice system, which is why I have joined Right on Crime in the fight for criminal-justice reform. Their focus on individual liberty, personal responsibility, transparency, and limited government is the foundation for the type of real, lifechanging reform that benefits all Americans. By working with policy makers and conservative leaders in dozens of states to provide conservative solutions for their individual challenges, we all benefit. These efficiencies don’t end at the state level. The smart policies in states like Texas, Georgia, and Mississippi can also have a significant impact on the federal criminal-justice system. With more than 4,500 crimes on the books and a federal prison system that has grown 750 percent since 1980, it is time for Washington to act. Right on Crime is on the forefront of defining what it means to be smart on criminal justice. I look forward to working with them to make America freer, safer, and truer to our core values of limited government and personal responsibility.

ATHENS—The fifth annual Athens Eggfest is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC). The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cooking will end at 3 p.m. Regular admission to TFFC will be charged; an additional $5 donation to the Friends of TFFC is required for tasting. Tasting will continue until all the food is gone. Cooks should preregister at http://athenseggfest. wordpress.com/. There is no fee to cook. Dozens of Eggheads will fire up Big Green Eggs and bake, smoke, grill and serve everything from breakfast casseroles to fancy desserts. While tasting, you can learn how to cook on a ceramic cooker yourself. The theme for this year’s Athens Eggfest is “Green Eggs and Ham…burgers” in recognition of Athens’ status as the home of the original hamburger. “The basic idea behind the Eggfest is to get people outdoors, and what better way to do that than by offering them delicious food,” said Allen Forshage, TFFC director. “And while they are here, we hope they will take time to fish in our ponds, walk our Wetlands Trail and learn about the role TFFC and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department play in keeping fishing great in Texas.” Demo eggs used at the event will be available for purchase at the end of the day. Click on the link above to reserve a once-used ceramic cooker prior to the event. The Athens Eggfest is sponsored by Morrison Supply, Paragon Distributing, Brookshire’s Food and Pharmacy, Friends of TFFC and First State Bank—Athens. For more information on visiting TFFC, visit www.tpwd. texas.gov/tffc or call (903) 676-2277.

Audacity of Citizenship continued from page 5 practices. The sound of our nation might play less dissonant and more harmonious if we removed hate speech from the protection of the First Amendment. We might have more peace in the streets if more Police Officers were Peace Officers first-and-foremost, committed to protect and serve the community. Mr. President, if our youth felt empowered by their own citizenship that in principle renders them visible rather than invisible, audible rather than silent, I believe they would take ownership of this American experiment and protect it with their voices, their votes and their lives. They might begin to see their communities as launch points for
opportunity and not traps and dead ends. They might learn to challenge what they see as disingenuous rhetoric, propaganda, spin and hype by positive means until the hype becomes reality. Empowered by the bold, audacity of their own citizenship, our youth, from Head Start programs to our colleges and universities might begin to see education, employment, entrepreneurship and a place in the world community as artists, bankers, scientists, soldiers, scholars, lawyers, linguists and diplomats as their futures and not see athletics, entertainment or gangs and violence as their only hope. Finally Sir, we adults must begin to see one another as citizens and view one
another as equal under the framework of our Constitution regardless of race, creed, gender, or economic status. If we do not, the math will never add up, the experiment will never work. If we refuse to treat one another as valued equals, as brothers and sisters and as fellow Americans without hesitation or reservation, another trigger will be pulled and another body will lie dead in the street, and then another, and another. I hear your voice more clearly now when you speak of: “a tradition based on the simple idea that we have a stake in one another, and that what binds us together is greater than what drives us apart, and that if enough people believe in the truth
of that proposition and act on it, then we might not solve every problem, but we can get something meaningful done.” The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream” Barack Obama Mr. President, some of us are weary of marching, we’re ready to run. Some of us are waiting for the tower to clear us for take off, we’re ready to fly. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Frankly, a year ago I would not have written to you but thanks to the audacity of citizenship, I now feel it is my privilege and my responsibility to do so. I would be more than happy to hear your views on any of the points I’ve raised here Sir.

Fort Worth gears up for Commemoration of 150 anniversary of Juneteenth, June 19-21, 2015 Fort Worth’s Opal Lee is committed to Juneteenth and the annual commemoration. For over four decades she has been on the forefront working to ”make people aware of the significance of the celebration.” This year, there’s more support from the City of Fort Worth and corporate sponsors, BNSF and radio stations K104 and KRNB. Joined by Council members Gyna Bivens and Kelly Allen Gray, Commissioner Roy Brooks , Joe Faust of BNSF, and
Hollywood Red and Briana of K104/KRNB; who all expressed the significance of the celebration, Ms. Lee continues to focus on the annual celebration, but she also has other plans. “There are 43 states that recognize June 19 as a state holiday and it is our sincere hope to have it declared a national holiday much on the lines of Presidents Day,” said Ms. Lee. June 2015 marks the 150th Anniversary of Juneteenth that commemorates when Black people in Texas

learned of their freedom from slavery on June 19, 1865, which was two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Former Dallas Cowboy, wife make generous athletic apparel donation to Carter Cowboys It was a Wednesday afternoon, and David W. Carter High School Principal Fred Davis was firing up a small crowd on the school’s front steps. “It’s a great day to be a Carter Cowboy,” Davis exclaims. Davis is helping kick off an event celebrating the donation of $50,000 in Under Armour athletic apparel and equipment donated from Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities. “We are so proud and humbled by this gesture,” Davis said.
Amid performances from the school’s band, cheerleaders, and a presentation of the flags from the school’s ROTC group, Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities Vice President of Community Relations Ronelle Ianace extended thanks on behalf of Smith and his wife, Pat. Ianace discussed how the Smiths grew up in poor families. However, through their collective success, they are working to extend a helping hand to others. “Pat and Emmitt Smith care about kids and they, particularly, care about youth,” Ianace said. “(Pat and Emmitt Smith) really care that others have the opportunities that they have had in achieving the success they want. Your success is in your heart, it’s in your eyes, it’s what you can dream. Emmitt’s goal is to give as many as kids their dreams so that they can achieve them in the future.” Carter was the second of two Dallas ISD schools to receive a donation of Under Armour athletic apparel and equipment this week. The Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities visited Skyline High School to present an identical donation one

day prior to the presentation at Carter. “We are truly honored to receive this generous donation from the Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities,” said Carter Campus Athletic Coordinator Harold Jones. “Due to your commitment to student achievement, our student-athletes will be afforded the use of the donated items which will inspire them to carry on the great tradition here at Carter High School.” Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities (PESC) is a 501(c)(3) public charity that creates and funds unique educational experiences and enrichment opportunities for underserved children.
Focusing primarily in North Texas, PESC’s TEAM 22 program partners with established organizations to provide a multiyear curriculum for underserved students, accessing and funding opportunities such as a summer camp, tutoring and leadership training. In addition, PESC funds existing children’s programs in North Texas through is annual grant application process. America’s truest art jazzes up sounds
Members of the Bryan Adams High School’s Jazz Ensemble perform during the Dallas Music Educators Association Jazz Festival hosted at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center campus.
--The sultry and sexy sounds of the alto saxophone is what made dozens of ears perk up, while finger snaps (an artful expression of applause) filled the room during a recent performance by the Bryan Adams High School’s Jazz Ensemble recently. For nearly two decades, aspiring jazz artists gather for the Dallas Music Educators Association Jazz Festival hosted at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center campus. The DMEA Jazz Fest has cultivated many successful musicians, including many of the band directors who have come back to teach within Dallas ISD.
This year, 15 jazz bands across the Dallas ISD featured their top musicians in a festival-styled venue, in an effort to keep the art form alive. “Anytime you can have a mechanism for students to showcase what they’ve worked on, that open lab, it’s nothing like it,” said Dean Hill, director of Townview’s “Big D” Marching Band. Hill said during his tenure teaching music, he has noticed a decline in the arts. More specifically, band programs are seeing considerable decreases, which some fear could lead to the demise of marching bands as a whole. Christian Brouton, a junior at South
Oak Cliff (SOC) High School, is a thirdyear band member. During football season Brouton spends most of his time marching in the band, but in the spring his focus switches to jazz. It’s where his skills are sharpened and developed more than he would by solely marching. “I prefer the jazz band because you can learn different techniques and forms on your instrument,” said Brouton, moments before the SOC Jazz Ensemble performed. That is why the jazz fest remains relevant. Brouton, who has been apart of band since fifth-grade, can keep his interest, awareness, and opportunities at his fingertips using the annual platform to
showcase his work. “One of the things is, there are less venues to showcase their art and that’s one of the reasons why we still do this,” said Hill. “The goal is to expose these group of students, who are eager to continue their growth in the musical arts area, and get them to use their talents on the professional side.” Today the aspiring musicians are different, said Hill. “We are having to adapt to the changing music world. People don’t understand that it’s one thing to play, as some want instant success, and it doesn’t happen that way. It has to be grown and has to be cultivated,” said Hill.

Get involved with the Garland Branch - NAACP
APRIL 1, 2015 11
Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington
Yesterday, Tomorrow Not Promised
The Garland Unit of the NAACP was chartered on July 6, 1984 with 127 members. Ms. Goldie Locke served as founding president and Mr. Johnnie O. Steadham was first vice president, along with 18 Executive Committee members. Two of the original 18 board members are still active today: Mr. Chester Johnson currently serves as chair of Legal Redress and Ms. Carol Montgomery is active on two committees. Mr. Richard Dockery, NAACP regional director, chaired the standing-room-only organizational meeting where two key issues were addressed: 1). the firing of African American police officer Sam Allen; 2). substandard schools in the minority area of Garland. Mr. Sam Allen was later rehired as a Garland fireman. To address schools, the Garland Unit became a plaintiff to the original school desegregation court order filed by the United States Justice Department and the Texas Education Agency. This judgment is still in effect today.

There’s this thing that happens when you read the bible about miracles being performed to the amazement of hundreds and even thousands. Today, I believe most of us would have a hard time dealing with “so called” miracles and merely chalk that kind of thinking as “back in the day” type stuff. That was then. This is now. Sure Christ and His early followers did the unexplainable, the unbelievable; the stuff modern science still can’t figure out. The question is do you really believe in miracles? Our explanation, our feelings are rationalized because; after all, the bible is a book of faith and not a book of science. Well, for Christians at least, the truth of miracles is crystallized in whether or not Jesus actually came back from the dead. It is the foundation of our belief. That’s probably why we’re called believers. That is a discussion for another day, even though miracle is a perfect term to use for Christ’s life, death and life. It’s this miracle thing that guides my perspective today. I believe miracles occur every day and everybody is the beneficiary of said miracle(s). You see, I think life itself is a miracle. I forget which supposed great philosopher said, “I think therefore I am.” And as I’ve stated many times, I am because He is; He, being God of course. As I continue to grow in Christ, I humbly appreciate life more and more as a gift, a blessing and less and less as an afterthought of habit. I would dare say a lot of us take life for granted until someone close to us dies, or is threatened with death. Things become very interesting once you accept
Christ for who He really is. I can readily admit to anyone who will listen that my appreciation of life is magnified by what it allows you to do. The fact that when I open my eyes on my own existence, I am able to gain a perspective on God’s other creations, including you. I am able to live and breathe and taste and see and hear and think and yes, also love. I am because He is. It kind of gives you a brand new perspective on God’s most precious gift… time. God’s everyday miracle is still how much He loves me (and you). That love is why we’re here. Because of it, every now and then I am not so consumed with a habitual view of life. I can start a morning, end a day with a sincere ‘thank you.’ I can pray for the blessing of a new day, one that includes the revelation of who God is and who I am to Him. And that knowledge lets me pass this way in truth and not ignorance. The age of miracles is still here. The proof…you woke up this morning to a new day in a world you didn’t create. You can think that’s normal if you want to. I choose to believe in miracles, those of the ancient world and the ones that have me writing this to you now. This life thing is impossible for me to take for granted, as it should be for you. As you consume the most powerful miracle ever, the gift of today, yesterday and tomorrow pale in comparison. May God bless and keep you always, TODAY.

I’m getting married in two months and the mother of his children is giving me hell. One day she says the kids (ages 6 and 12) can be in the wedding and the next day she says no. His son who’s six is our ring bearer and his daughter who’s 12 is a junior bride’s maid. Our relationship has become very strained because of her unwilling to get along with me. I have spent the last year planning our dream wedding and now I don’t think it’s a good idea for his children to participate. How do I tell my fiancé I don’t want his children in our wedding? Name withheld You don’t. When you marry him, you’re marrying his children, too. They should be a part of the ceremony. He’s entering this relationship with what some would refer to as baggage. Make up your mind if you’re really ready to take this trip. It ain’t gonna be a vacation, let me just put that right on out there. You’re marrying a man who hasn’t attained respectable closure with the mother of his children. That should be on his to-do list, not yours. And don’t dismiss the children because he hasn’t handled his business. If he doesn’t, it’s easy

A Review of Get Hard
Hardly Forgettable By Eva D. Coleman
Marrying my Fiancé Children Dear Alma,
WWW.GARLANDJOURNAL.COM
to see, an abundance of childish challenges to come. It’s time for the three of you “grown folks” to sit down at the table, rationally discuss and agree to make the children your first priority. It doesn’t matter how you feel or how she feels because this ain’t about feelings. It’s about positive parenting and orchestrating the best example of teaching children they are loved, valued and precious treasures in your life. Blending families isn’t new and it isn’t easy. It takes prayer, hard work and a strong last nerve, LOL. Get ready to suck it up. If you love him, you’ve got to love his kids like you birthed ‘em. Give in to the battle between you and his ex. You’re wearing the white gown; throw in the white towel. Let her know calmly and respectfully, the kids are welcome to be in the wedding, which will take place with or without her blessing. Tell her you’re willing to go to the wall for your soon-to-be husband and their kids. Your wedding day is important, but the blending of these two families takes precedence. The best wedding gift you can give your fiancé, stepbridemama, is making sure his children are a part of that special day. Alma -
Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart have teamed up for a film that moviegoers are bound to remember. While Get Hard has a stronghold on edgy adult humor, it also provides a comical look at class and race. James King, played by Ferrell, sees his success as an investment industry manager plummet due to accusations of fraud. As a result, he is sentenced to prison and seeks help from Hart’s character, Darnell Lewis, to get in shape for life inside the San Quentin prison walls. Lewis is a mobile car detail business owner whose closest encounter with a hard life is recounting and reciting scenes from the movie Boys in the Hood. As a way to earn a large sum of money he desperately needs, he creates and brings to life an elaborate Prison Readiness Program to assist King. Earlier in the film, long before King is accused of fraud and sentenced, and as he sifts through 100 dollar bills to tip Lewis two dollars for washing his car, he tells Lewis, “Success is a mindset.”
leave your children at home! Get Hard is full of messages and surprises. I couldn’t help but be reminded of the title of one of Hart’s movies and
This served as one of the most memorable lines from the movie. Lewis is an African-American entrepreneur who wants more for his family. His goal is to measure up to success by obtaining a home in a nice neighborhood so that his child can go to school in a safe environment. The film also makes light of how sometimes, out of desperation to get ahead, adults place children in grown-up situations to garner sympathy.
stand-up comedy tour, Laugh at My Pain. Hart and Ferrell’s characters in Get Hard provide a poignant look at morality as it relates to success. It shows how success can be painful, quickly leading to a lonely road of abandonment when you fall from it. The film also injects humor into sensitive topics of class, race, gender, sexual orientation and culture. It reminds us that when life gets hard, it helps to laugh along the way.
Such is the case in the scene where Lewis places his child on the phone, encouraging her to “act” like he showed her, in attempts to get a home loan. There’s also hoodie humor. While King is searching inside his freshly-washed ride for the key, he is startled by a hoodie-wearing Lewis who attempts to give the car key to him. King immediately sees it as a holdup situation. This scene pokes fun at the black male in a hoodie stereotype. Get Hard does more than push the envelope. It pushes a case of priority mail with return receipt. Some may want to return to sender. There’s a priority on funny with a return lesson of what is now acceptable as visuals on-screen. There are graphic sexual scenes, even some that made moviegoers in the theater gasp. This is definitely not a kid-friendly movie, so please

A Hindu family wants to purchase a home in a neighborhood where there are no temples serving their faith. Couldn’t a real estate professional point out that fact to the family, before they buy? After all, they are only trying to be helpful.
And most Texans would like to think it gets easier to see every day. However, that certainly does not mean that every household in the state is provided the same choice regarding where they live that others are.
A single mom with young children hopes to rent at a particular apartment complex. Wouldn’t it be a good idea for the property manager to explain that the railroad tracks that run right behind the property might make it unsafe for the “little ones?”
More than 50 years after the passage of the Fair Housing Act, housing discrimination is now more often a subtle affair. Rather than a slammed door, discrimination today more often comes with a smile and an assurance that “we’ll get back to you.”
A person with a visual disability wants to rent a unit in a particular property. She uses a guide dog to help her navigate day to day activities, but the property has a strict “no pets” policy. The manager has no choice but to politely ask her to move on to another development. Right?
The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs would like to use April’s designation as Fair Housing Month as an opportunity to examine the phrase and its meaning a little more closely.
In all three instances, according to HUD guidance, the real estate or leasing professional was in the wrong and may have violated the Fair Housing Act. Individuals and families cannot be “steered away” from a given neighborhood or rental property, even for what seems innocuous reasons, if the reasons are characteristic of the seven protected classes listed above.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (“HUD”) defines equal housing choice as the ability of a household – regardless of race, color, religion, sex, handicap (disability), familial status or national origin, and of similar income levels – to have the same housing choices available to them as everyone else in a given community. For example, one cannot outright refuse to sell or rent a home to a member of one of the seven protected classes listed above. Simple, right? Unfortunately, it’s not always so obvious. Imagine the following three scenarios:
Sadly, this is but a small sample of the ways in which someone could effectively be denied equal housing choice. Housing discrimination continues to exist and it is in everyone’s best interest to bring it to an end. Equal access to the housing of a person’s choice is fundamental in meeting essential needs and ability to pursue personal, educational, employment, or other goals. Texas’ being a state in which residents can live where they choose will be a powerful tool for achieving the promise of being the state of opportunity.

8 Tips to Help Seniors Conquer Stress (NewsUSA) - As boomers retire from their jobs at unprecedented rates in the U.S., you'd think they'd be spending their free time with friends, lingering over the morning newspaper and coffee or taking January vacations in a warm place. But many seniors are finding themselves in a predicament that few anticipate in retirement: parenting for a second time. Census reports indicate that 2.7 million grandparents are responsible for their grandchildren. Their added duties may be fulfilling, but they may be stressful, too. In fact, many things can trigger stress among retired adults -- paying bills on a fixed income, failing health, caring for ill parents or spouses, or even grandparenting.
Excessive stress can lead to serious health problems. "When stressed, the body releases substances such as cortisol and adrenaline that affect every organ and can cause muscle tension, insulin secretion and increased heart rate," said Arthur Hayward, M.D., a geriatrician and the clinical lead physician for elder care with Kaiser Permanente's Care Management Institute. "You can't avoid stress, but managing it can help preserve your health and well-being," Dr. Hayward added. He recommends identifying and understanding the cause of your stress and finding ways to relieve it, such as these eight tips: 1. Pace yourself. Don't take on too much. Be aware of your limitations. 2. Set realistic goals and expectations, and don't be afraid to ask for help. 3. Plan time for yourself. Recharge your batteries. 4. Exercise and eat a balanced diet. Get plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. 5. Try relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga.

6. Get enough sleep. If you have problems sleeping, talk to your doctor. Drinking caffeinated beverages and alcohol can affect your ability to get a good night's sleep. 7. Talk with a loved one or write in a journal. 8. Stay positive. Positive thoughts can make a difference, such as "I am hopeful" or "Things will be better." Sometimes God calms the storm. Other times God calm his child. Which will God have to do for you today? And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, sleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, care thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them why or you so fearful? O ye of little faith.
