Millions of Seniors, Minorities, Youth and Veterans Could be Turned Away at the Polls Under New Laws WASHINGTON, DC -- A broad coalition of civil rights, social justice and faith-based organizations, and groups representing communities of color has declared a “state of emergency on voting rights in the U.S. and said that millions of people could be disenfranchised by restrictive voter laws. As National Voter Registration Day approaches on September 25th the coalition—which includes groups representing African-Americans, Latinos, Asian-Americans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and Native Americans—are calling on their communities to take a few simple steps to ensure that all those who are eligible have what they need to fully participate in our democracy by voting: Check your registration status Check the documentation needed to register and to vote Check the deadlines for registration and early/absentee voting Check your state voter laws Check your polling location and hours The coalition also is highlighting a number of community-specific resources to assist with voter registration and information:

Leading AfricanAmerican Pastors announce Support for Maryland Marriage Equality WASHINGTON, -- On Friday, September 21 at 11 a.m., a coalition of prominent AfricanAmerican pastors and clergy from around the country will hold a press conference at the National Press Club to announce their support for marriage equality legislation, and in particular, the Civil Marriage Protection Act in Maryland. The group will urge Marylanders to vote "Yes" on Question 6 of the Maryland ballot referendum. According to the group's convener, the Rev. Delman Coates, Senior Pastor of the Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, MD, "The group of pastors that will assemble have a range of personal religious views and church practices as it relates to same sex marriage. Some perform same sex marriages and others do not. And yet, we stand united in the conviction that the role of the state is to protect the equal rights of all its citizens and should not codify discrimination as a matter of law and public policy." In February of this year, the Maryland State General Assembly passed the Civil Marriage Act that allows same sex couples to receive a civil marriage license. The law explicitly exempts religious institutions and clergy who do not affirm or perform same sex marriages if it is inconsistent with their beliefs and practices. According to Rev. Todd Yeary, Senior Pastor of the Douglas Memorial Community Church in Baltimore, "I can fully support the Civil Marriage Protection Act because it in no way forces any church to acknowledge or perform same sex marriages if it is incompatible with its beliefs. “ This is about protecting all families and ensuring that we have a society where everyone is treated equally as a matter of law without the imposition of religious dogma." This November, Maryland voters will be asked in a ballot referendum whether to support the Civil Marriage Protection Act.Â

Greatness vs. Gratitude “A people may become great through many means, but there is only one measure by which its greatness is recognized and acknowledged. The final measure of the greatness of all peoples is the amount and standard of the literature and art they have produced.... No people that has produced great literature and art has ever been looked upon by the world as distinctly inferior. James Weldon Johnson By Aaron Hopkins
There are many things that can make a man or woman attain greatness but one thing that ensures a stamp of approval is gratitude. It is wise that we take periodical self assessment tests to see how we measure up in the category of gratitude. Our elders would say it this way, “You need to count your blessings! It almost seems that greatness is not even attainable without being grateful for the things and people that come into our lives who will always deserve credit for what they contributed to us by setting the standard for greatness. So many times in my personal life I can remember saying, “I never could have made it this far without my mother and father, family, friends etc. Then there are those folks who come into our lives who are like family but they have a different function. I like to call them personal “validators. These are the people who reinforce the words and lessons that our parents give us. We tend to doubt our parents’ experience, however, so the validator bridges the gap between our loving parental guidance and our stubbornness. I can look back, after much validation in my life, and see how greatness is really not something we should consider ourselves to be without humility and understanding -- that we are really not individuals. We are, actually, the sum total of our life’s experiences and encounters with people from every walk of life. Some of the most memorable experiences of one’s life come when we encounter greatness in somebody we know. It always seems to bring you back to earth when someone does a thing so well that all you can do is watch them in awe. So I realize now how difficult it is to attain greatness without gratitude for being able to see and feel what greatness really is through the eyes of and spirits of so many people who came before me. For their giving the whole of their being to achieve greatness not for themselves but so that a people who were once considered nothing in this world, I am indeed eternally grateful! CURRY: Are you Better Off than You Were Four Years Ago? By George E. Curry
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (NNPA) – Judging from the recentlyconcluded Republican and Democratic conventions, the question of who will be inaugurated as president in January may turn on how voters answer a question posed by Ronald Reagan in his 1980 debate with Democratic incumbent Jimmy Carter: Are you better off today than you were four years ago? The question was raised at the Republican convention in Tampa and last week here at the Democratic counterpart. In his acceptance speech in Tampa, Romney said: “This president can ask us to be patient. This president can tell us it was someone else’s fault. This president can tell us that the next four years he’ll get it right. But this president cannot tell us that you are better off today than when he took office. Former President Bill Clinton looked at where the country was four years ago and reached a different conclusion. Clinton said President Obama “put a floor under the crash. He began the long, hard road to recovery and laid the foundation for a modern, more wellbalanced economy that will produce millions of good new jobs, vibrant new businesses and lots of new wealth for innovators. “Now, are we where we want to be today? No. Is the president satisfied? Of course not. But are we better off than we were when he took office? And listen to this. Listen to this. Everybody – when President Barack Obama took office, the economy was in free fall. It had just shrunk 9 full percent of GDP. We were losing 750,000 jobs a month. Are we doing better than that today? The answer is yes. Aside from the intensely partisan delegates, what do Americans really think? First, let’s recap where we were four years ago. George W. Bush was completing his second term. Gasoline was averaging $3.84 a gallon. Unemployment had risen to 6.1 percent, the highest since December 2003. On Sept. 15, 2008, Lehman Brothers announced that it would file for bankruptcy, and the stock market had taken a dive. A Sept. 15, 2008 New York Times story began: “Fearing that the crisis in the financial industry could stun the broader economy,

EDITORIAL

investors drove stocks down almost 5 percent Monday, sending the Dow Jones industrial average and Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index to their lowest levels in two years. The following day, another New York Times story began: “Fearing a financial crisis worldwide, the Federal Reserve reversed course on Tuesday and agreed to an $85 billion bailout that would give the government control of the troubled insurance giant American International Group. “The decision, only two weeks after the Treasury took over the federally chartered mortgage finance companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, is the most radical intervention in private business in the central bank’s history. Determining whether the public feels it is better off today than four years ago has a lot to do with how the question is framed. For example, a Gallup/CBS News poll taken two weeks before the Republican convention asked: “Would you say you and your family are better off than you were four years ago or not? In that survey, 42 percent said they were better off, 55 percent said they weren’t. However, when a CBS/New York Times poll offered those two options for responses and “...or is it about the same as it was four years ago? Given three options instead of two, 40 percent said they were the same, 20 percent said they were better and 39 percent said they were worse off. Similarly, an AP-GfK poll found that 36 percent said they were “about the same, 28 percent said they were better off and 36 percent said they were worse off. The Obama and Romney camps can use the CBS and AP polls to make a partisan point. The president’s supporters can argue that most Americans feel their financial situation has improved or is about the same as it was four years go. Romney backers can also argue that most Americans feel their situation has worsened or remained the same as it was four years ago. Some journalists further cloud the picture by being selective in the numbers they us. In a Meet the Press interview with Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s former chief of staff, host David Gregory said: “Look at our poll: 69 percent, nearly seven in 10, saying things are either the same or better than when the president came into office. That’s one way of looking at it.
D.Brown Sturns General Manager GM@garlandjournal.com
sales@garlandjournal.com editorial@garlandjournal.com calendar@garlandjournal.com
However, the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll referenced by Gregory showed that 42 percent said the country was worse off, 27 percent said it was better off and 31 percent said it was about the same. Gregory could have also stated that 58 percent of Americans feel things have remained the same or improved since President Obama assumed office. But he didn’t. There is no question in the minds of Americans about who is most at fault. In April, an ABC/Washington Post poll asked which president was “more responsible for the country’s current economic problem. Only 32 percent selected Obama while 54 percent picked Bush. Two months later, a Gallup poll found that 68 percent of Americans feel Bush deserves a great deal or a moderate amount of blame for the nation’s economic woes. And in July, a CBS/Time poll found 64 percent of the respondents saying Obama’s policies contributed at some or a lot to the economic downturn. When asked about Bush; 81 percent said his policies contributed some or a lot to the sour economy. Again, how this question is frame has an impact on the answer. As CNN’s political unit noted three months ago: “When asked in the survey whether they are better or worse off than they were four years ago, Americans are split, 44% to 43%. But when asked whether they are better or worse off than they were four years ago ‘when Bush was president,’ a small gap opens - 47% say they are better off compared to 41% who say they are worse off. The question of whether we are better off than we were four years ago will continue to play out in the final two months of this campaign. Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan said at a campaign stop in Greenville, N.C.: “The president can say a lot of things, and he will, but he can’t tell you that you’re better off. Simply put, the Jimmy Carter years look like the good old days compared to where we are right now. But Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley told CNN: “We are clearly better off as a country because we’re creating jobs rather than losing them. We have not recovered all that we lost in the Bush recession. That’s why we need to continue to move forward. George E. Curry is a journalist, keynote speaker, moderator and media coach. He is the editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service in Washington, DC.

Giddings: Addressing the ability to afford higher education Last month many students returned to college, while others entered college for the first time. A large number had a different experience. Sadly many s t u d e n t s Hon. Helen Giddings dropped out and others were denied the excitement of the first day of college because of the inability to pay. Unfortunately rising tuition has priced many middle class students out of college. In the aftermath, the U.S. has dropped to rank 12th in the percentage of college graduates compared to other countries. Every student who wants to go to college should be able to do so if they are willing to put together the funding through some combination of working, savings, grants, financial aid and student loans. It is not uncommon today for students to work three jobs, causing many to miss the “ideal” of graduating in 4 or 5 years. In March of 2012, President Barack Obama signed into law student loan legislation that was upheld by the Supreme Court in June 2012. This legislation provides students with some relief
regarding their repayment options. The new legislation changed the repayment plan options by putting in place an “income based repayment plan” that limits the borrowers payment obligation to 10% of their monthly income. As President Bill Clinton explained recently, some graduates who might want to take a job as a teacher or police officer may be better able to do so. Additionally, under the new legislation debt forgiveness has been lowered to 20 years. These may seem like small changes, however for a college graduate first entering the workforce, the ability to have their repayment based on how much they actually earn will be a huge relief. Prior to this legislation, private banks provided the student loans, and in turn the federal government would pay these banks a fee for providing and managing the loan. This legislation cut out the middle man, and by doing so freed up $68 billion over the next 11 years. This money will be used for the Pell grant program which provides grants to the neediest students attending an institution of higher education.
Over the last few years students graduate with a degree, but many come to realize they left college with a mountain of debt. The bad economy and tough job market have made it difficult for those newly graduated students to find employment in their field of expertise. Consequently they are not generating the income they need to cover their living expenses with the addition of their student loan payment. The subsequent effect was some students made the decision to drop out of college because they could not see how they would be able to pay the debt they were taking on. Facing $50,000 in debt upon graduation is a difficult and dismal way to begin life after college. To further illustrate the need for some relief would be to recognize that Americans have had the notorious distinction of carrying a significant amount of credit card debt. However the tides are turning, and at
nearly $1 trillion, student loans now exceed the US credit-card debt for the first time in history. This is why I am supportive of making these adjustments. They will help those who worked hard to achieve the dream of a higher education and are now entering the workforce as an educated employee. Now, these young people have the ability to have their student loan repayments determined by their income level which will change the way future students make their career decisions. The Department of Education announced that Texas would receive over $20 million in grants to historically Black colleges and universities. This grant money will go towards advancing these universities as well as helping students who face financial challenges. Although there is more work to be done, the 2012 student loan legislation as well as the grant money are two steps that will have a significant impact as it relates to the affordability of higher education. Representative Helen Giddings represents the people of house district 109 for the Texas House of Representatives. We were both from New Jersey-- he hailed from Jersey City and I, from East Orange by way of Cheryl Smith Newark. We arrived on the campus of Florida A&M University and it was just the right thing to do, for “homies” to hang together. “Tony” just knew he was full of swagger, even back in the 1970s. Many afternoons we were together at our work study jobs in the campus library and we became very close. I was there when he pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity our freshman year and he was there for me when I pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority our sophomore year. After graduation, I was in his wedding as he then pledged his love to my sorority sister, Lajuana. I am so proud of them because that was in 1982 in Birmingham, AL and they are still together today! Tony called me when he and his road buddy begin making plans to come to see Alabama v. Michigan at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington. While
I was looking forward to spending time with his wife, I settled for reminiscing with Tony and his friend, Bobby Knight; because they decided to travel without their better halves. And just like back at FAMU, Tony had to school me a little. When I first met up with the two guys, I was talking with an Alabama fan. Tony walked up and the guy introduced himself and Tony shook his hand and said what I thought was, “Ro Psi.” At first, I wondered why he was giving a false name, then I thought, “He’s not from Rho Psi, he pledged Upsilon Psi Chapter.” I was totally clueless. Later I asked him why was he fronting and so he explained to me that what he actually said was, “Roll Tide” which is the “universal” greeting for Alabama fans-lovers of the Crimson Tide. Then a lightbulb went off and I responded, “Oh, like we say at FAMU, “Go Rattlers?” Tony and Bobby laughed as they talked about how the fans of Alabama and rival, Auburn are when it comes to their schools. It’s all good when you meet an Alabama fan if you say, “Roll Tide,” they coached. So later that evening, while Alabama fans were full of fun following their victory and Michigan fans were noticeably silent, I was able to get in quite a few “Roll Tides” before I called it a night. It was interesting watching the fans and I found myself comparing the Michigan
and Alabama fans to the fans I am more familiar with. Now HBCU fans can match the enthusiasm of other schools, but I don’t see the same level of financial support. Maybe HBCU alums don’t realize that their financial support can help the schools in so many areas. During a press conference for the Al Lipscomb State Fair Classic, several years ago, then Dallas City Council member Al Lipscomb called me to the podium to address the gathering. Although it was an impromptu message, I focused on an issue that is so important--folks pronouncing support verbally but not following up financially. I urged everyone to purchase tickets instead of “begging” for them. Now folks were buying tickets for the Alabama/Michigan game and they were paying more than $100 for the tickets. I know people who make just as much, if not more, than some of the Alabama fans I met but when it comes time to pay for tickets for the Grambling/Prairie View A&M game or any of the other HBCU games, those same folks are looking for the “hook-up.” I shudder to think of the response from some of the “ballers” I know who want to be hooked up for our HBCU games. I have heard them screaming and hollering about a $25 ticket, so they would probably lose their minds if they were asked to pay $100. What’s the difference? Why don’t we
place the same value on our programs, products and institutions? Why do we go spend hundreds of dollars on our outfits and then we don’t want to purchase a ticket? Do we actually think that we are benefiting the schools with the money we spend at the mall, restaurants or clubs-along with the numerous parties that we attend? Tony and Bobby had a great time at the game and they fell in love with “Jerry’s World.” They thought the stadium was phenomenal and I am sure they will be returning because they are big Dallas Cowboys fans. To his credit, Tony is very supportive of his alma mater. He has a vested interest in Alabama too because his daughter is an outstanding student there. It would be great if we could get more support and love shown for our HBCUs. If it was good enough for (fill in the blank), it’s good enough for me. Are HBCUs good enough for you? If not, what can you do to make them better? That’s the challenge. At the very least, every HBCU alum, even if you only went for a semester, should be willing to make an annual contribution. And just like back in the day when parents and grandparents without an education paid to send others to school, give something. We’re going to pay one way or the other, so we need to be proactive! This is Just One African American Woman’s Opinion. What’s Yours?

Go Red For Women® and Macy’s join forces to ease burden, drive diversity in medicine
Dallas, TX -- Tuition hikes at colleges and universities across the nation are putting the squeeze on many young people and forcing families to find new ways to pay for higher education or consider forgoing college altogether. In an effort to ease the burden to students during these rough economic times and increase the number of underrepresented minorities in medicine, the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women(TM) and Macy's, its national sponsor, offer the Go Red(TM) Multicultural Scholarship Fund. Sixteen $2,500 national scholarships are being offered for a second year to multicultural women pursuing higher education in health care. As part of its Go Red For Women movement, the association strives to expand the pipeline of much-needed diverse nursing, medical and allied health students and address important gaps in treatment that can lead to heart health disparities. Deadline for entry is November 30, 2012. "The recruitment of talented diverse young women into the healthcare field is a critical step in the delivery of quality, culturally
sensitive patient-centered care. In these challenging economic times, the Go Red Multicultural Scholarship Fund will help ensure the continued success of a diverse group of young women in their healthcare education journey," said Dr. Jennifer Mieres, Senior Vice President, Office of Community and Public Health, Chief Diversity
Macy's Senior Vice President of Diversity Strategies. "The fund reflects Macy's long-standing commitment to diversity, a core principle within our company, and allows us to extend that commitment into the communities we serve." 2012 Go Red Multicultural Scholarship recipient Janelle

"The American Heart Association's Go Red Multicultural Scholarship provides a muchneeded vehicle during these tough financial times to help minority women achieve their dream of becoming healthcare professionals," said Dr. Lynne Holden, physician and president of Mentors in Medicine. "There is a unique opportunity to save millions of lives by promoting heart heath and increasing awareness of heart disease, which is the No. 1 killer in the U.S." The Go Red(TM) Multicultural Scholarship is made possible by the Macy's Multicultural Fund. Macy's is a national sponsor of Go Red For Women(TM) and has helped raise more than $29 million for the cause since 2004. Parkland joins effort to increase breastfeeding rates in U.S. hospitals
DALLAS – Parkland Health & Hospital System has been selected to participate in Best Fed Beginnings, a first-of-its kind national effort to improve breast feeding rates in states where rates are currently the lowest. Parkland joins 89 other hospitals through this initiative to work together in a 22-month learning collaborative, using proven quality improvement methods to transform their maternity care services in pursuit of “Baby-Friendly” designation. “For women who plan to breastfeed, the hospital experience strongly influences a mother’s ability to start and continue breastfeeding,” said Anne Tudhope, Vice President of Nursing for Parkland’s Women and Infants’ Specialty Health. “We already took the first step toward mother and baby bonding last year with our Rooming-In program, which allows mothers and babies to spend as much time together as possible while in the hospital. “This is one of the many ways to ensure that mothers delivering at Parkland who intend to breastfeed

For infants, it decreases the incidence

For mothers, breastfeeding decreases the risks of breast and ovarian cancers, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease.

Bradfield Close your eyes. Imagine that you are a single mother working two low-paying jobs, amille barely making ends meet. Your young daughter has a learning Bradfield difference and your only option to educate her is the failing neighborhood inner city school that provides absolutely no services or support for children who learn differently. Private school tuition is unthinkable in your world. Securing one of the coveted, albeit rare, openings in one of the premiere, tuition-free charter schools is solely based on the luck of the draw, and as fate would have it, after waiting anxiously with hundreds of other hopeful parents, you’re not that lucky. Open your eyes. Now ask yourself, what would you do? This is the premise for 20th Century Fox’s latest theatrical release, WON’T BACK DOWN. Directed by Daniel Barnz and written by Barnz and Brin Hill, WON’T BACK DOWN stars Academy Awardnominated Maggie Gyllenhaal as Jamie Fitzpatrick, a spirited, 30-something, working class single mother who is fed up with her daughter’s failing school, and Academy Award-nominated actress Viola Davis as Nona Alberts, a fellow concerned mother and dedicated teacher who desires to teach at a school where educating children is the top priority. Inspired by real life events, this film tells the story of two mothers from opposite sides of the railroad tracks who unite for a common goal — to achieve a legal takeover of a failing elementary school and transform it into a successful learning facility. Set in Pittsburgh, the drama begins when Jamie attempts to have her daughter, Malia (Emily Alyn Lind), removed from her current class after observing the teacher’s equal-opportunity indifference toward her students. To add insult to injury, Malia has a learning difference and her school does not provide any special programs to address the issue. So what should be simple assignments, like reading aloud, are instead colossal challenges for the shy and understandably frustrated second grader. Jamie faces one disappointment after another as she attempts first to get Malia transferred to Nona’s class, then to land one of only a

TEXAS STATE SEN. ROYCE WEST CELEBRATES 60TH BIRTHDAY Gala event features American Idol winner Ruben Studdard
the National Bar Association, the Dallas Bar Association, and the J.L. Turner Legal Association. As a member of the Texas State Senate Atty. West has served on the Finance, Education, State Affairs, Intergovernmental Relations, Health and Human Services, Criminal Justice, and Jurisprudence committees. He currently is the Chairman of the Senate Sub-Committee on Higher Education, and Vice Chairman Carol West looks on as Judge Sam Lindsey swears the Senator of the Education Committee. The in as Governor for A Day! senator is an active member of Good Street Baptist Church and serves as ROYCE WEST is one of the most powerful men Vice President for the Board of Directors in not only the state of Texas, but across the for Circle Ten Council of Boy Scouts of America. U.S. A proud member of Omega Psi Phi His influence is far reaching, even across Fraternity, Inc., Sen. West’s bio does not the waters to other continents. As he celebrates another milestone in his speak to the enormous good that he has life--turning 60 years old, he continues to done over the years. Dallas County District Attorney Craig show why he is the epitome of service and Watkins had his eye on Sen. West for years. commitment. Next year he will have served 20 years as He often recalls when prior to running for a Texas State senator, representing Dallas. the senate, Mr. West made an unsuccessful It is an understatement to say he has led an bid for District Attorney. “Thanks for being a mentor and example impressive life-- the young man who has to all aspiring elected officials,” said Mr. continued to lift as he climbs. Ella Goode Johnson and her husband, Watkins as he offered birthday greetings. Willie Earl, have known Sen. West for “You certainly were a mentor to me, and years. She had nothing but kind words for for that I will always be grateful.”’ A long-time member of Good Street him, and not just because he and Willie Earl are fraternity brothers or that the two men Baptist Church, where he serves as a Deacon, Sen. West is surrounded share the same birth date, September 26. “Among the qualities of identifying by family members who are equally effective leaders is having the ability to involved and committed. He is married to connect with people,” said Ms. Johnson, businesswoman Carol Richard West and who is a former two-term president of oftentimes when his demanding schedule the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta has him crisscrossing the city or state, Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and very active he can count on Carol, his Chief of Staff community servant. “Senator West has Lajuana Barton, his son Royce Jr., to step championed that quality both personally up and represent. And if they are already on the job, he has a bench that is the envy and professionally. “ This managing partner of West & of many, with veteran designated hitters Associates L.L.P., he was admitted to the like Teresa, Kelvin, Myrtis, Joycelyn and State of Bar of Texas in 1979 after receiving others who work tirelessly to assist him in his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts his capacity as senator or attorney-at-law. Family is very important to the Senator Degrees from the University of Texas at and you also won’t find his mother, or Arlington and his Juris Doctor from the his children too far away from him. That University of Houston in 1979. In college, he was a student athlete, family has grown exponentially because of scholar and leader. His legal experience Sen. West’s benevolence! Atty. Cheryl Wattley, who is currently includes serving in the trial division of both the Dallas and Harris counties District an associate professor at OU, had a lot to Attorney’s Office and private practice say about her colleague and friend, “As I since 1986. He served as a Chief Felony thought back over the years to write this Prosecutor at the Dallas County District comment, I realized that I have known Attorney Office and he has been a senior Royce for almost 30 years. We started together as young lawyers, filled with partner in the Firm since its inception. Admitted to practice law before all courts in the State of Texas, the Supreme Court of the United States of America, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Sen. West is also a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers, the State Bar of Texas corporate and education law sections,
energy and excitement about practicing law, about making a difference. And yet, it seems like yesterday for Royce has that same enthusiasm and energy, only now he has so many more projects and directions to demand his attention. In reflecting on decades of work and achievement, the one aspect of Royce’s many accomplishments and achievements that I will always value is his determination that African American children will have the opportunity for excellence in education. I can still hear his voice after the decision in Hopwood knocking down the admissions policy at the University of Texas saying, ‘we’ve got to do something; we’ve got to figure out a way that our kids can get a UT education.’” She continued, “And for Royce, all African American children are ‘his kids.’ The establishment of the Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Academy stands as testimony to not only that interest and commitment but a vision. What better way to marry honoring the work of a force with the African American community, Dr. Conrad, with the future. And that is Royce, blending our history and legacy with opportunities for our children to reach for the stars. Thank you Royce, for 30 years of friendship, for the impact that you have had on our community, and for always having African American children in your heart.” A family man, Sen. West began the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program and thousands of students from District 23 have participated in this outstanding program that not only provides paid internship opportunities but also provides life skills programming to assist college students with being better prepared to excel in not just the workplace, but in the community. While many are totally unaware of the duties of a state senator, it is important to understand that starting a program to provide jobs for his constituents, is not something mandated by the Texas Senate. If it were, more would be duplicating his efforts, but that is not the case! And the students who participate not only get a crash case in so many areas, from etiquette, job preparedness and grooming, to the importance of community service and volunteerism. The program is so strong that participants started an alumni association! This is just one example of the impact and influence of Sen. West’s works over the years. Former award-winning television anchor and reporter Ramona Logan said, “Senator Royce West has been a

formidable force since he went to the State Capitol. He is one of a few state senators who truly works for the good of all people. He has been able to get things done because he understands how to utilize input from people of different perspectives. The mere fact that he was able to get UNT-Dallas in southern Dallas shows the sheer magnitude of his ability to mobilize different factions for the greater good of the community.” Now a best-selling author, image and media consultant,Ms. Logan also praised the Senator for the work he does year round. “He is definitely an advocate for education especially with the Emmett J. Conrad Internship Program he started to provide internship opportunities for young people,” she said. “And on top of that he has a Heart of Gold!” Radio personality and businessman Willis Johnson is a longtime friend of Senator West and he spoke fondly of his former co-worker. “I met ‘Royce’ in 1976 when we both worked at KKDA. Royce was a weekend sports announcer and that’s where we developed our friendship….long before he was Senator West. Our kids were friends over the years, in fact Trecia dated Royce Jr. 20 years ago and Royce Jr. and ReMarcus became golfing buddies with BJ in the last 5 years. BJ and Royce Jr still are today. So it’s more than a friendship that I have had with Senator West. He has been my friend and family member.” Mr. Johnson went on to speak about the Senator’s servant leadership. “Of course he has been one of the greatest community leader/elected official that Dallas has ever had,” said Mr. Johnson “The Conrad program speaks volumes about his commitment to education and his support of Paul Quinn College and UNT Dallas is unmatched. Finally the 10% rule that was put in legislation is just another example of what had been delivered and not just talked about by Royce West. Glad to call him my friend.” And the Senator has been a friend to many. Highly regarded and respected,at the youthful age of 60, there doesn’t seem to be a hint of slowing down. His law practice is thriving and as he prepares for another session in Austin that hopefully will be more productive and not falling victim to partisan politics, the Senator is always optimistic and prepared. Maybe that’s why he hasn’t had any significant opposition in almost two decades! Senator West was born to serve and destined for leadership.

COMING SOON - IMAJ TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM DON’T TRY TO FIT IN. “Don’t try to fit in. Being different is beautiful. Among other things, it means you’ve got the sense to think for yourself in a world where everyone else is trying to be everyone else.” ~Imaj And so spawned the IMAJ album. This appropriately self-titled debut by “Country Darling” Imaj is all at once country yet genre-defying. Reflecting the anomaly that she is, this album has a native heart, childlike freedom and old soul. Imaj gracefully blends traditional, folk, bluegrass, Beatles-pop and operatic war cries with lyrics and a pure vocal range as wide and deep as her spirit. “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner,” a fan favorite and Imaj’s first single, is the love child of her hippie-hillbilly nature that will
take you for a smooth yet wild ride on a peace train. You can always tell which songs she wrote (eight out of 12 on the album). They each have a distinct signature about them with outlaw characteristics like “Darkness” shining light on the beauty of black and doubt; “Train Song” ran some of Nashville’s most seasoned musicians off the tracks; and “Passport” a tune with a backstory and vocal range that maintains a reputation for giving all fans alike goosebumps. It’s her clever balance of unusual songwriting and pure vocal tone that makes Imaj like a rare painting fans want to win at
an auction and frame for all to see. Imaj is a true artist, with that “IT” factor that industry giants are continuously on the prowl for. She’s not only a great vocalist with crossover appeal, she’s an artist that has the most
sought after trait in the industry: longevity. Snuggle her up with the greats; she’ll fit just fine next to your Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson and Beatles records.

Coppell native honored by the AJGA BRASELTON, Ga. – Josh Radcliff of Coppell, Texas, has been named an HP Scholastic Junior All-American, the American Junior Golf Association and HP announced Wednesday, Sept. 26. Since 1988, the team has recognized 12 young men and 12 young women who demonstrate the ability to excel both on the golf course and in the classroom. A senior at Dallas Jesuit, Radcliff scored a 30 on the ACT and carries a 97.3 GPA, which is in the top 8 percent of his class. He raises money for CureSearch for Children's Cancer through the AJGA’s Leadership Links program, and tutors area students through the Jesuit STAIRS Program and Ignatian Scholars. On the golf course, Radcliff competed in four AJGA events in 2012, with his best finish being a T5 showing at the Goodman Networks Junior at Timarron. To be eligible to apply for the HP Scholastic Junior All-America Team, boys must have placed in the top 10 of an AJGA Open, Regional Golf Championship or Invitational, while girls needed a top-five finish. The selections were then based on grade point average, class rank, SAT/ACT/PLAN/PSAT scores, community service and writing ability. Candidates were required to submit an essay no longer than 500 words on an original topic relating to golf. The HP Scholastic Junior All-America Team will be honored at the Rolex Junior All-America Awards Banquet, Nov. 18, at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. By being named to this team, each player is also eligible to participate in the Polo Golf Junior Classic, one of the most prestigious events in junior golf, which will take place on PGA National Resort & Spa's Champion and Fazio Courses, Nov. 17-23.

Mrs. Collie J. Nicholson to join Grambling Alumni for scholarship Fundraiser Addison - the wife of Collie J. Nicholson, Ophelia Nicholson, will join the members of the Collie J. Nicholson Chapter at their Third Annual Wine & Cheese Scholarship Mixer and first event under its new chapter name this Saturday. “We recently changed our name because we wanted to honor a GSU graduate” said Kimberlie Page, chapter president. “The primary focus of the chapter is bringing more visibility of Grambling State University to the northern part of Dallas and Mr. Collie J. Nicholson was responsible for making Grambling State University more visible on an international level. His marketing skills, vision and determination brought GSU’s football team to New York City and Tokyo, Japan, the marching band to three Super Bowls and 38 years of the Bayou Classic. Mrs. Nicholson is happy that we chose to name the chapter after her husband. I’m very excited that Mrs. Nicholson is attending our event and supporting the chapter as we strive to further Mr. Nicholson’s legacy.” The wine & cheese mixer will take place at Times Ten Cellar on Prospect Avenue from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Tickets are $35 and open to the public.
