Harming the weak at Christmas

Recently, Congress passed a tough budget agreement that set the funding levels of government for the next two years. This agreement addressed several issues, but also left 1.3 million Americans looking for work without the support of unemployment insurance during this holiday season. While the proposed agreement that was recently passed in the House does seek to end some of the cuts to programs that benefit senior citizens, students and middle class families, it fails to address a dilemma faced by many of our fellow citizens who have fallen on hard times during this recovering economy. On December 28th 1.3 million Americans receiving federal unemployment insurance are scheduled to be cut off. It is irresponsible and unconscionable that Republicans in the House of Representatives decided not to take action before they left Washington for the year. It is so contrary to the Christmas spirit to ask people to face the dawn of a new year without knowing how they are going to pay their mortgages, their rents, their car notes or their grocery bills. Our economy continues to be at the mercy of these Republicancreated crises, and only a long-term, responsible, and balanced budget agreement will provide certainty and stability. A meaningful budget proposal should create jobs, protect families, and boost our economy which has been steadily growing under the leadership of
President Obama. Extending insurance to the unemployed would actually benefit our economy, according to the Congressional Budget Office. In a recently released report, the non-partisan body said that extending unemployment insurance would result in increased consumer spending and job growth in our nation. The insensitivity and lack of empathy that is pervasive throughout the House GOP is denying protection for unemployed job seekers in the budget. That same lack of empathy is also driving those same members to demand draconian cuts to nutrition assistance programs that support working mothers, children, and families. If they have their way, nearly 4 million men, women and children will be denied access to the supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP). School children from needy families that receive free school lunches would also be adversely affected. Many of the members of Congress who are suggesting such cuts quote from scripture to justify their positions. I, however, cannot find a single passage in scripture that justifies their proposals. Their positions are simply meanspirited, unsympathetic and wrong. They are void of compassion, and do not seek to help people. In fact, their interest is in punishing those who they believe do not share their political beliefs, and who do not support their political party. What we are witnessing is simply another war on the poor and the defenseless. I, for one, will not allow these attacks to go without comment and counter-action, especially during a season that is associated with peace, love and joy. We cannot afford to forget those people who are searching for work. We must ensure that their Christmas season is as joyous as those who are blessed to have job security.
Application deadline approaching State Senator Royce West announces the application process for the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program has begun. Since 1993, the program has provided paid summer employment for more than 2,100 students who live in District 23. The deadline for online applications for the 2014 Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program is December 31, 2013. Highly motivated college students from Senatorial District 23 are matched with internships, mentors, character and skills building experiences, and community service projects/programs that will change their lives. "The program continues Dr. Conrad's vision that all students, regardless of race, age, creed, color, religion, sex, etc., should be afforded every opportunity to obtain a quality education and then be able to use this education to secure financially and professionally rewarding employment," said Senator West. As a Conrad intern, students gain invaluable work experience and transfer that practicum back into the classroom. Most interns remain in the program for several years, even while pursuing post-graduate degrees. Many have gained permanent employment with companies they have interned with, entities like Texas Instruments, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, AT&T and the Texas Department of Transportation, to name a few. Three former interns are now medical students at the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. The class of 2013 had 147 interns. They were assigned to jobs at hospitals, city, county and state agencies, law, accounting and architectural firms and area corporations. For the second year, we placed an intern with the Dallas Cowboys and another with the Texas Rangers; a first! This 2013 luncheon speaker was the Honorable Shirley Franklin - former Atlanta mayor and incoming visiting professor at the University of Texas - LBJ School of Public Affairs. She challenged interns telling them that "the world now belongs to them and if change is to take place, they must be the ones to do it."

METRO Storm Debris Collection Update Garland, Texas - - Due to the damage to trees and vegetation caused by the recent winter storm, Environmental Waste Services will not be able to pick up all the tree limbs and other excessive brush on the regular collection schedule. The EWS crews are utilizing all available manpower and equipment to assist residents in collecting the brush debris in the most safe, efficient manner. As of Wednesday, Dec. 18, the brush collection crews have completed Tuesday’s collection area and moved into Wednesday’s area, where they will be for several more days. Follow the progress of the collections at www.garlandenvironmentalwaste.com and click on the area maps for a daily update. To assist the collection crews, residents are reminded to follow the normal guidelines for brush collection: Place brush at the collection point at the front curb and place away from stationary obstacles such as mailboxes, phone pedestals, electrical and cable boxes

Grease Disposal available for residents Garland, Texas - Environmental Waste Services, Garland Stormwater Department and Industrial Pretreatment are calling on residents to “Cease the Grease” this holiday season. After you fry or bake your holiday turkey, how about “thinking green” to recycle the grease? Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) improperly disposed down the kitchen drain, toilet, or storm drain system can cause property damage, health hazards and environmental problems and lead to costly plumbing problems. Avoid these problems. Instead of throwing away your used cooking oil, bring it to the Cease the Grease (CtG) station at the Garland Drop-Off Recycling Center at 1426 Commerce St. Residents can pick up empty CtG containers at the red CtG recycling station, fill the container with used cooking oil and bring it back to the CtG station. Citizens are also free to use their own capped containers. For larger quantities of liquid grease, drop off at the CtG station in a sealed plastic container and deposit in front of the CtG station. The Drop-Off Recycling Center is open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Grease collected is recycled to make biogas used to fuel a Wastewater Treatment Plant in Dallas County.
Downtown Garland Street Closures Garland, Texas - As construction of downtown infrastructure improvements and the City Center development proceed, some street closures are necessary. Austin Street The portion of Austin Street east of the Granville Performing Arts Center (GPAC) main entrance at Fifth and Austin streets will be closed to through traffic as of Dec. 26, 2013. Patrons will still have access to the main entrance drives for entry and exit of events at the Atrium and GPAC. This eastern portion of Austin Street will remain closed for the duration of the City Center construction project. Fifth Street The 200 block of Fifth Street (between Austin Street and State Street), will close to vehicular traffic for up to two weeks, beginning Dec. 30, 2013. This closure is necessary to allow work on the sanitary sewer line servicing City Hall. State Street State Street will close to through traffic from Third Street to Fifth Street (with local access only to residences and businesses to the east of the KCS Railroad). This closure will immediately follow the re-opening of Fifth Street in early January 2014. But today a King was being remembered. “Madiba� the most prolific man of his own tribe of the same name, was receiving the regal treatment that he deserved. God bless Rolihlahla Mandela, who was later named Nelson by his first grade English teacher. If nothing else, hearing President Barack Hussein Obama at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela assured me of one thing; Obama can read. Those of us who anticipate certain speeches from certain leaders, were taken aback a few years ago. As Obama delivered the Nobel Peace Prize speech in
Oslo, Norway, we thought maybe he read the sign wrong and thought he was pontificating at an NRA Convention. Possibly embarrassed by the suddenness of his assent to the Nobel Prize reserved for the world’s most renowned peace propagators, Obama gave a Reaganesque like speech that sounded like a permit to bring war on anyone, anywhere, in the name of peace. But there is something about the death of your relatives and those philosophically akin that will bring out the real you. Mandela
words must concentrate on his ability to create passion in others. If you’re looking for way to remember how valuable the life of Nelson Mandela was, you can do it in the weeks and years to come. There will not be a stuffed stadium and throngs of people
when former Vice President Dick Cheney dies. Dignitaries from all nations and people of all races will not hasten toward the sacred site of his demise or his final resting place. There won’t be a similar international outpouring when F. W. de Klerk is laid to rest. There were no mourners en masse of this latitude and longitude for Bull Connor, George Wallace, Adolf Hitler and there won’t be for Justice Clarence Thomas. Eulogies of grandeur and largesse are never wasted on those voices who shout at the world from the wrong side of history. Nelson Mandela and the spirit of his convictions will live again and I pray that it will be in the person of Barack Obama. And maybe, just maybe this is the day we will point to where he began his true sojourn toward the endless war for human dignity. That moment that commenced
a full fleshing out of what Obama believes about the poor and those susceptible to the heartless wielding of indiscriminate power around the globe. As he stood there tall, erect, handsome and efficient with words, Barack Obama had to find some semblance in his imprisonment in America to Mandela’s imprisonment in South Africa. On this day, BO did not have to face the hecklers that dog him from the halls of Congress to the sticks of Middle America. He did not have to worry about being called a Kenyan as if it were a slur of the worst order. Barack Obama seemed to shake off the chains of his own political oppressors and realize that the struggle for peace and equality is war and not a sociological debate. We must realize that the true measure of Nelson Mandela’s greatness cannot be found in who he was, it can only be found in what so many other men and women are not; but can be! Surviving unemployment during the holidays by Robert Cantrall author of “The Fall of My Life� Merry Christmas, you’re fired or your position is being eliminated or, don’t take this personally, but we are downsizing. Have you ever experienced any of these scenarios? Are you living in fear that you may soon be facing this holiday greeting? I have lost my job nine times. How do you face your wife, your children, your parents, your brother or sister, your friends or neighbors? How do you avoid the pitfalls of fear, anger, anxiety and depression that only serve as self-defecting patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving? How do you turn a seemingly dreadful circumstance into a learning experience to further your good fortune? I have my share of experience. I have done a lot of things wrong in this volatile state and a few things right. Allow me to share with you the takeaways that have enriched my life to the point of actually being able to thrive and enjoy what can otherwise be one of life’s most stressful experiences. First thing’s first; you need a plan. If you

are married, you and your spouse need to openly and honestly communicate. If you are a parent, your family needs an immediate plan. You do not know how long you will be without a paycheck so you need to know what assets you do have and how long you can remain liquid. Then you need to agree on how you can live more modestly throughout the course of your unemployment. I cannot emphasize enough the concept of agreement. Neither the dictator nor the victim approach will bring a workable solution to this uneasy time. Your plan also needs to include a family job search strategy. If this is your first time at this experience, then don’t underestimate the fact that looking for a job is the hardest job you will ever have. The entire family needs to agree that getting back to work becomes your highest priority. This is not a paid vacation and everyone in the family needs to understand how they can contribute and support you. Your next step is to seek help. For your job search, begin by letting anyone and

everyone know you need help. This is not the time to be humble, meek or mild. Stand up for yourself and your family. Be proactive. Treat your job search just like you did your job. Make a plan and execute on it every day. There are countless resources for application, resume and interview skills. Maybe you need to pick up a long-delayed new credential or skill. For the family, there are also endless possibilities to support your new needs. You will be shocked at the giving holiday spirit of neighbors, friends and family if you have the courage to make your needs known. Avail yourself of the services of the food bank and other social and charitable institutions that offer the wonderful gifts of clothing and Christmas presents. You will have the opportunity to return your good fortune to another in need in the years to come if you follow this course. Last but not least, get your head on straight. I think the most important thing for you to know is that you are not what you do for a living, how much you make doing it, or how many material possessions you have accumulated doing it. There will

never be a greater opportunity for you to discover and exhibit who you are as a human being. I also think the second most important thing for you to know is that your family unconditionally believes in and supports you for who you are, and not only as a money tree. Do not allow guilt or shame to take up residence in your consciousness. Do not accept any acting roles by playing a victim or being too proud. It has been my experience that life seems to keep repeating lessons until I learn them. This is not the time to be asking “why me.� This is your divine moment to ask what you can learn. Remaining grateful for what you have is the cornerstone from which to survive unemployment during the holidays. Robert Cantrall has worked in the financial services industry for more than 15 years. Do you ever wonder what generations a century from now will say about the time that you were on this earth? Will you be on the right side of history in discussions about Black people in America? Will you be someone who existed or will you have really lived?
You see there’s been a lot of pain and suffering that is nothing like the little trials and obstacles that we face today.
As this year comes to a close, we’ve lost some giants who “really lived.” We celebrated the lives of Evelyn Lowery and Nelson Mandela -- both left indelible marks and will be remembered for their unwavering efforts to make this world a better place. I know, it’s easier to just exist, to do your time on earth. And to paraphrase the other Mr. Brown, “that’s your prerogative.” Just think however, if those who came before us just existed. Meanwhile, if we really know our history, we should stop complaining and whining. We shouldn’t let a day go by that we don’t do something to make this world a better place. It’s your decision! legacy.

Do we really know what freedom is? Do we really understand the sacrifices that were made to achieve freedom in a physical sense, realizing that mentally we still have issues and should have concerns?

If you don’t know, I believe tests come from the Almighty while temptations come from the devil. Many of you have heard this before and some have probably said it. I’m pretty sure God’s intent is to test you, but it is not necessarily His desire to break you. Triumph over these kinds of pop quizzes in life gives us the practical experience that turns into sincere testimony. Without them, we would not be able to testify about God’s goodness and mercy. We wouldn’t be able to acknowledge Him as the reason we got through any of it. Let me submit myself as an example of someone who can witness to another sinner and perhaps help another believer because I can relate to the trials and turmoil of someone else catching what appears to be hell here on earth. No one is immune to this. As a matter of fact, I am struggling with the notion that it is a privilege to be singled out by God to endure certain hardships. It is at times difficult, but I’m thinking becomes one’s obligation to declare I am here today as a witness to the mercy, kindness and grace of the Almighty. I guess what I’m trying to say is when it appears that all doors are closed and all options have run out, that is the perfect time to look for and depend on God for the answers that you need, even if they don’t appear to be the answers that you want. There is a ram in the bush for every situation, but we have to be certain in our faith that through even mustard seed sized faith, mountains can be moved. Maybe it’s
better said this way. Even with mountain sized effort and no faith, you probably can’t move a mustard seed. You see you’ve got to believe God will not abandon you. In our darkest hours and worst nights He is there with us. I know this because I’ve had what I knew was “my worst day ever,” and several “nothing can get any worse than this” moments, only to survive to battle the enemy yet another day. God was with me then and dare I say He is with you now no matter the impossible of circumstance. You’ve got to find peace in this because there is trouble ahead just as there was trouble back in the day. Yeah but back then you didn’t know as I didn’t that the fight was fixed. We both have an unstoppable teammate. For those who might be wondering where I’m getting this from, there is scripture that captures the essence of this. Turn your bibles to 1 Corinthians 10:12-13. “So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall. No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But, when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” There is a ram somewhere. God provides it through His grace not your effort. Our job is to hold on to our faith, know it’s there, listen and keep our eyes and hearts open. Once you submit to the fact that it ain’t up to you, then you will be privileged to open the door to God’s solution. I understand how difficult this can be, particularly when you are caught up in your storms. But when you are able to accept this truth, life becomes easier and peace will bring you joy. How you might ask are you supposed to accomplish this? My only challenge to you is to pray and practice. Be still and listen. Seek and ask. May God bless and keep you always.

A male friend of mine moved to my city for a 6-month work assignment. To welcome him to the area, I took him to dinner and introduced him to my local friends. Well, I just learned that he has been having a sexual relationship with a sorority sister, who’s also my best friend. NEW YORK —Acclaimed actor Anthony Mackie adds TV host to his resume as he joins “AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange.” The star, best known for his roles in “8 Mile,” “The Hurt Locker” and “Pain & Gain,” will emcee the sixth season of the documentary program, which brings films about popular culture across the African Diaspora to the small screen. The series, produced by National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) and co-presented by American Public Television (APT), premieres on public television’s WORLD Channel on Monday, January 13, at 8 pm ET/10 pm PT and runs weekly on Mondays through February 10. Along with the WORLD Channel airings, APT will distribute “AfroPoP” to additional public television channels in February 2014. This season “AfroPoP” cuts to New York City to examine the birthplace of the worldwide pickup basketball phenomenon with Bobbito García and Kevin Couliau’s “Doin’ It in the Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC,” co-presented by Latino Public Broadcasting (January 13). “AfroPoP” hoofs it across America and India to catch the dynamic collaboration of two dance masters, Indian Kathak guru Pandit Chitresh Das and African-American tap star Jason Samuels Smith, with “Upaj: Improvise” by Hoku Uchiyama, co-presented by the Center for Asian American Media (January 20). He wasn’t coming to Dallas with the intent of starting what would later be the number one funeral home in the National Funeral Director and Morticians Association. He was leaving Louisiana because the Ku Klux Klan had told him he’d better. After witnessing others in his civil rights organization murdered and even set on fire, Beckwith took heed to the late night phone call that suggested that he was next. At that point, Mr. Beckwith’s dreams of relocating to Dallas were more about survival than success. Whether he planned for it or not, the next 50 years would prove to set the stage for a funeral home business and his son, John Beckwith Jr. would do more than ride shotgun with Dad, he’d learn early on to take the reins and run with. Most people in the southern sector of the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area of Texas are well acquainted with John Beckwith Jr. After all, if he hasn’t served one of them a warrant in his capacity as deputy constable, he may have stood before them to deliver a sermon as an ordained minister. In most cases however, Beckwith is known for his tenderness and strength in a most difficult time. That sad moment of making the final plans for a loved one. As Beckwith Jr., (Mr. B.) put it, being there to serve people is not just a job that he happens to be very good at, it’s his ministry. And everything that he has, does and is he attributes to that calling. “I learned the business early,” said Mr. B. “My very first job in the funeral home was as Funeral Director in Charge. Dad allowed me the opportunity of on-the-job training and when I messed up, he cleaned it up and we just kept going.”
And go they did. From the opening of the original funeral home in Waxahachie in 1980 to the new and improved Dallas location five years later, Golden Gate Funeral Homes saw an increase of 150 cases a year. By 1988 the funeral home had gone from 200 to 800 annual funerals and a coveted position in the community. So when the largest funeral home corporation in America began to approach and purchase mom and pop funeral homes in the Metroplex in 1988 and again in 1998, Golden Gate Funeral Home was primed and positioned to completely ignore the extremely generous offers of a buyout. “We were and still are family-owned and operated,” stressed Mr. B. “We had an obligation to our employees, our community and our families to continue to be a staple in the community. put a dollar amount on commitment and if we’re nothing else we are committed.” Although selling wasn’t an option, competing had to be. For the next 15 years, Mr. B stood on the forefront of the funeral business and applied everything he’d learned to every opportunity that presented itself. It’s difficult to imagine that the Mr. B of today was ever the young up-and-coming funeral director known as John Jr. Now, nearly three decades later, as he sits in the front office of the 20,000 square foot funeral home and crematory, the CEO of funeral homes serving Texas and Louisiana is regarded as the funeral home business marketing guru. Beginning with his 2005 commercial that received more than three million YouTube hits to his TLC
reality show ‘Best Funeral Ever’, Mr. B is catapulting the industry well past the traditional boundaries that had been the norm. “The TV show (Best Funeral Ever) has allowed us to introduce something new to the general public” said Mr. B. “It was time for people to see past all the limitations that were associated with the funeral business and start realizing that just as no two people are the same, no two funerals should be the same.” When “Best Funeral Ever” originally aired in the latter part of 2012, the public wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. Facebook, Twitter and the mainstream media were all a buzz with statements of distaste and disillusions. People couldn’t understand what it meant and why it had to be on TV. Even some members of the African American community suggested that this show could singlehandedly set back the race a couple 100 years. Mr. B countered that “‘Best Funeral Ever’ was always meant to be a vehicle for education and advertisement and it really hurt when people didn’t see that. “I never had any expectations for America but I was disappointed at the statements that were made by people that we do business with and our community.” Regardless of the naysayers, Mr. B and TLC continued their collaboration for 16 more episodes of ‘Best Funeral Ever’ that began airing in early December, Monday nights at 9pm There are features of a funeral for a man who loved breakfast, a celestial marriage and an Olympic service, to name a few. According to Mr. B, nothing about the show has changed and they’re “still giving families what they asked for.” Recent reviews show that this time the general public seems to regard the show as a lot less upsetting and a little more entertaining. “We started people to talking about funeral services again, which will get us back down to the 5% cremations that we had 30 years ago and away from the 30 % that we’re seeing today. And if we can get people talking and laughing, then I think we’ve accomplished something,” said Mr. B. Golden Gate Funeral Home has evolved from its mere 800 yearly cases to upward of 2500. They host a weekly radio show and local television show both under the moniker of “Ask the Undertaker.” John Beckwith Sr. is now semi-retired and extremely proud of the innovation and accomplishments of his son. He now regards that threat on his life all those years ago as the defining moment in his life. The funeral home is known for its Stepping with Attitude Team (SWAT) of dancing pall bearers and have even given classes for professional mourners. In addition to Golden Gate providing services for babies 0 -12 years at no charge, they work with hospice companies and AIDS organizations to provide services for the indigent. Although the business has grown by leaps and bounds and most of the members of the Dallas staff are regarded as official reality TV stars, Mr. B says not one of those things is the scriptural premise by which his funeral home is operated. “Everything that I do is just representative of what I believe. I believe that funerals should be a special, individual celebration. I believe that we can change people’s ideas about final wishes. I believe completely in the services that we provide and I believe that the people we provide services for are very pleased. At the end of the day with everything that we do, all we want to hear is our Heavenly Father and our families say ‘Well done.’”
