July 4th: Taking our cue from Frederick Douglass By Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. Though the keynote address was delivered 163 years ago in Rochester, N.Y. on the significance of the 4th of July celebration in the United States, the roaring eloquence and penetrating clarity of Frederick Douglass’ speech still rings true today. Slavery and its lingering aftermath in America continues to be the albatross around the neck of our democracy that chokes the quality of life for millions of African Americans and others who cry out freedom, justice, equality and prosperity. History captures both transformative events and the evolution of impactful epochs of the long journey of humankind. Yet, the history of the times and outspoken courage of leaders such as Frederick Douglass challenges all of us not just to remember the past, but to learn from it and be determined to fight for a better future for all who have been denied basic fairness and respect. As our nation prepares for its annual celebration of Independence Day, I re-read Frederick Douglass’ Fourth of July speech with a specific eye toward what we can learn from it in the wake of the recent tragedies of Charleston and North Charleston, S.C.; Cleveland; New York City; Ferguson, Mo. and Sanford, Fla. Frederick Douglass observed, “Oppression makes a wise man mad. With brave men there is always a remedy for oppression…The freedom gained is yours; and you, therefore, may properly celebrate this anniversary. The 4th of July is the first great fact in your

nation’s history – the very ringbolt in the chain of your yet undeveloped destiny… Pride and patriotism, not less than gratitude, prompt you to celebrate and to hold it in perpetual remembrance. “I have said that the Declaration of Independence is the ringbolt to the chain of your nation’s destiny; so, indeed, I regard it. The principles contained in that instrument are saving principles. Stand by those principles, be true to them on all occasions, in all places, against all foes, and at whatever cost. The sunlight that brought light and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn…What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer; a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.” A little more than a week ago we were still mourning. This time, in Charleston, S.C. for the racially motivated murders of Rev. Clementa Pinckney and eight others at Emanuel A.M.E. Church. But our spirit and our determination to be free will not be broken even after centuries of cruelty and oppression. Giving up out of fear or giving in to injustice are not and will not be in our menu of options. The spirits of David Walker, Denmark Vesey, and of Frederick

Douglass live on within us. Douglass’ intellectual imperatives are quite appropriate to reject the contemporary tolerance of poverty, injustice and ignorance. We have to move beyond removing the “symbols” of racism and oppression, such as the Confederate flag, to removing the substantive structures and policies that deny equal opportunity to advance and improve the quality of life of all Americans. The issue today is not what the Confederate flag represents. The real issue should be what does the American flag represent to African Americans and others who yearn for freedom? How are American businesses and institutions of higher learning making a difference for millions of people throughout the country who aspire to prosper and to make our world a better place for all people? An appropriate response to Douglass’ admonitions would be: (1) Education – maximizing high quality equal education for all without discrimination or restriction because of race, color, gender, creed or any other form of social exclusion. (2) Criminal justice reform and overcriminalization – there are simply too many people imprisoned in America, more than 1 million disproportionately African American and Latino American. (3) Principled entrepreneurial development – with a particular emphasis on economic

equality and inclusiveness in the global marketplace. In his eulogy of Rev. Pinckney, President Obama set the right tone when talk about removing the nation’s blindness to poverty and racial injustice. Let’s raise up the next generation of “amazing” young gifted and talented genius who are currently entrapped in the ghettos and barrios of America’s impoverished neighborhoods. Let’s flood our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other universities with scholarships and career opportunities to prepare a new generation of young leaders to carry America forward in STEM fields of study and research. Let’s give the million or more prisoners in American jails and prisons a chance to redeem their lives and families with advanced training and academic preparation. Combine, all of this would constitute an “Amazing Grace.” The words of Frederick Douglass reverberate today with a renewed sense of urgency and commitment to organize and mobilize a new, bi-partisan coalition to bring about real change in America. The executive, legislative and judicial branches of the U.S. government now appear poised to finally to begin to work together in the interest of empowering of all the people. But we must not be silent witnesses. We must be vocal. We must stand without fear. It is time once again, in the spirit of Douglass, to speak truth to power to empower!

FROM THE HILL By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the state of Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

The meaning of the health care decision On June 24th, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld a critical provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). This decision was a victory for millions of hardworking Americans who are now secure in the knowledge that they can enjoy the benefits of affordable, life-saving health coverage. In the case, King v. Burwell, challengers to the ACA argued that people who applied for health care in states that did not establish their own exchanges were ineligible for federal subsidies. Since Texas did not set up its own exchange millions of residents, who enrolled in health plans using the federal exchange, were at risk of losing subsidies which would have made the purchase of health care insurance unaffordable. Fortunately, a majority of the justices on the Supreme Court rejected the plaintiff’s argument and upheld the ACA. As a result, those at-risk Texans, as well as millions of Americans in the 27 states that did not establish exchanges, will continue to receive subsidies to help pay for health insurance. In Texas, where the state refuses to expand Medicaid while 17 percent of the population remains uninsured, this makes a big difference. In the majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, “Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health care markets, not to destroy them.” Roberts agreed with the writers and supporters of the ACA, who argued that federal subsidies were always intended to be available to every single American, not just those in certain states. The ruling will enable Congress to preserve the best and most necessary provisions of the Affordable Care Act. Following two attempts in the Supreme Court, and 60 votes in the House of Representatives intended to undermine the ACA, one thing is clear, the Affordable Care Act works. Five years after the enactment of the ACA, more than 16 million Americans have enrolled, and the rate of uninsured Americans is now 11.9 percent—the lowest in U.S. history. It is time to end the attacks on the Affordable Care Act. I am looking forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to find even more ways to improve the health care law’s affordability, availability, and quality. Our goal should be to perfect the law so that every American has health insurance coverage. With the success of the ACA, we have the ability to fight chronic disease, invest in medical research and improve our focus on preventive measures. I am committed to finding ways to improve health outcomes for my constituents, and for every American.

My New Year’s gift Unfortunately I didn’t get to attend services held for my Godson, Jeffrey D. Miller. It seems like only yesterday, although it wasn’t, that his older brother J.J. was the victim of violence, of that all-intrusive moniker, Black on Black crime. Now here he was, another black man dying a violent death. When I talked to Jeffrey in early Jeffrey Miller June, we were planning for his visit to Dallas for this weekend’s 21st annual Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon. I was excited that he was coming and looking forward to sharing the experience with him. I used to make jokes about him when he was younger. You see, one December I came home from college and his mom wanted to go out to ring in the new year. I agreed to babysit J.J. When she came home she said she had a great time, and that is good because nine months later, Jeffrey was born. From the time he was born, I would always say that I didn’t want to go out on New Year’s Eve because that was the time you got pregnant! I actually took the credit for his birth! Jeffrey was not only big in stature. He had a big heart and I loved him so much. When I moved my mother from New Jersey to Texas in 2012, he was the person who drove the truck nearly 1600 miles. And while he was here, we experienced his culinary talents as he took over my kitchen. During a visit to New Jersey in 2012, I spent the entire day with Jeffrey and his friends. We went shopping and ate really good pizza (not throwing any shade on Chicago, but let’s be serious!). Although it was snowing and icy, Jeffrey wanted me to meet his “second family, a cadre of men and women who clearly loved him and valued their relationships. They all seemed happy to finally meet “Aunt Cheryl and the feeling was mutual because I definitely wanted to know that this kind, generous, loving, hunk of a man was surrounded around people who appreciated him and reciprocated his love. There were about nine of us and we spent the evening at a restaurant enjoying very good food, entertainment and drinks. They even explained the art of “holding your liquor as we talked about everything under the sun. Everyone was respectful, there was a lot of laughing and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I even had my first Tequila shot! Jeffrey and I had long talks about everything from building a future and the importance of family to enjoying life and making a difference while we are here. I don’t know why the men shot him and knowing won’t ease the pain felt from the loss. I have to take solace in the memories I have of our special relationship. -Cheryl Smith

CURRY: Whites Still Live in ‘State of Denial’ Former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley is fond of saying, “Slavery was America’s original sin, and racism remains its unresolved dilemma. But the unwillingness to face up to the raw racism that led to the murder of nine African Americans attending Bible study at a church in Charleston, S.C. proves that the problem is more than just an unresolved dilemma. Judging by public opinion polls, most Whites live year-round in the 51st state – the state of denial. First, let’s deal with the facts. Around 9 p.m. on June 17, Dylann Roof, a 21-year-old avowed White supremacist, entered Emanuel AME Church in Charleston and murdered nine, unarmed African Americans, ranging from 26 to 87 years old. Each victim was shot multiple times. We have the murderer’s own words that his goal was to “start a race war, according to law enforcement officials who took Roof into custody. Rather than address obvious racism, our non-friends on Fox & Friends and other Fox network programs attempted to make the massacre about religion, gun control and anything other than the actual culprit – racism. Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy referenced “hostility toward Christians. That theme was echoed by Bishop E.W. Jackson when he noted that “we don’t know why he went into a church, but he didn’t choose a bar or “basketball court. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani also postulated that “maybe he hates Christian churches. But we aren’t talking about any Christian church. We are talking about a historic Black church that had been carefully targeted by the shooter. Within minutes after his name was made public, Dylann Roof’s White supremacy views became widely known. A photo on his Facebook page showed him wearing patches with the flags of White minority-ruled South Africa during the apartheid era and Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Both flags

are popular symbols associated with White supremacists in the U.S. Another photo posted on Facebook by one of Roof’s friends showed him leaning against an automobile sporting the license plate, “Confederate States of America.â€? Several days after the rampage, Roof’s racist manifesto was discovered. In it, he said: “Anyone who thinks that White and black people look as different as we do on the outside, but are somehow magically the same on the inside, is delusional. How could our faces, skin, hair, and body structure all be different, but our brains be exactly the same? This is the nonsense we are led to believe. “Negroes have lower Iqs, lower impulse control, and higher testosterone levels in generals. These three things alone are a recipe for violent behavior‌â€? Toward the end, he wrote: “I chose Charleston because it is most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country. We have no skinheads, no real KKK, no one doing anything but talking on the internet. Well someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and I guess that has to be me.â€?

Some conservatives tried to make the shootings a gun issue. After several Fox personalities suggested that ministers arm themselves, Steve Doocy chimed in, “If somebody was there, they would have had the opportunity to pull out their weapon and take [the shooter] out. But it’s not that simple. “Fox & Friends used a mass shooting at a South Carolina church to baselessly promote the carrying of guns as a solution to prevent such attacks – even though research indicates that civilians are more likely to harm themselves or someone else than stop a criminal when they have a gun, and there is ‘no evidence; that arming civilians stops mass shootings, observed mediamatters.org After conducting a 5-month investigation, Mother Jones magazine concluded: “In the wake of the massacres this year at a Colorado movie theater, a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, and Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, we set out to track mass shootings in the United States over the last 30 years. “We identified and analyzed 62 of them, and one striking pattern in the data is this: In not a single case was the killing stopped by a civilian using a gun. And in other recent (but less lethal) rampages in which armed civilians attempted to intervene, those civilians not only failed to stop the shooter but also were gravely wounded or killed. “Moreover, we found that the rate of mass shootings has increased in recent years—at a time when America has been flooded with millions of additional firearms and a barrage of new laws has made it easier than ever to carry them in public places, including bars, parks, and schools. Clearly, the rampage in Charleston, S.C. was not about attacking Christianity or the need for more guns. It was about racism – an issue this country has always been reluctant to address.

HALL: #7 Summers Family in prior generations, is also a mentor and friend.

There are some big names in the musical itinerary that you would recognize. Shaun has worked with, written for or produced for artists such as Erykah Badu, MaryMary, Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Kurt Carr, Kim Burrell, Chaka Kahn, Vanessa Bell

time to music theory made all the difference. Carolyn Campbell was a short older White woman whose small Oak Cliff studio produced a number of great musicians. In fact, Shaun’s best bud and hope-to-die road dog R.C. Williams studied under Campbell as well. R.C is the band

Franklin’s successful “Hello Fear” release in 2011 cited Shaun as its musical director and suddenly the world knew a secret that had been safely hid within Dallas’ city limits. Shaun is a Grammy Award winning producer. He earned three with Kirk Franklin and one last year with a group called Snarky Puppy. Although Snarky Puppy is an oversized, overzealous, overtalented garage band with friends who mostly grew up together at the University of North Texas, they have toured extensively and mostly outside the United States.

Armstrong, Trinitee 5:7, Men of Standard, Isaac Caree, God’s Property and rap genius, Timbaland. Shaun is known for his musical diatribes, are as my mama would say, he can make them keys talk!! As I sat during a recent CD listening party, he was actually playing new riffs and descants on the piano as we listened. When you can hear a new melody in the melody that you created, you are musically superior to most. The fact that he had a music teacher who taught all types of music and demanded equal

leader for Erykah Badu, has his own CD, and cultivates local talent weekly via venues like the Prophet Bar and Sandaga. That’s a hint... go check these guys out. The reason they call them “starving artists” is because we refuse to invest in their gifts…Duh!! Shaun’s style is eclectic, electric and cannot be contained to a categorical listing or a canonized genre. His CD is literally the same. You will find it under jazz, but there is more. Shaun is a tangential thinker and his musical improvisations bear that out. Playing a chord in

Descant; ˈdeskant/ 1.an independent treble melody usually sung or played above a basic melody. Descant is a 7 letter word. And for a local musical genius named Harold Shaun Martin, the number 7 has a lot of significance. On 7/7/15, his long awaited CD Project entitled #7 Summers will hit iTunes and the quest for a 5th Grammy, (yes…Him already got 4) will begin. Let me follow the usual introductory protocol and then I will explain why the term descant came to mind. Shaun Martin is a native of Dallas, Texas where he began to study music at the age of 4 under the instruction of Carolyn Campbell. After attending Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, he enrolled and graduated from Weatherford College and The University of North Texas where he received his Bachelors of Applied Arts and Sciences. Shaun (Fingers) Martin still serves as the Minister of Music at Friendship West Baptist Church where Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III is the Senior Pastor. He admits openly and often that Dr. Haynes who hired him as a teenager is a major reason and motivation for his success and for finally completing his first personal project. “O Promise Me” can invoke a movement in Handel’s Messiah. And he can turn any tune into a Michael Jackson classic in less than sixteen bars. For smooth jazz aficionados, the music is painted or tainted if you will, with the residues of artists like Spyrogyra, Lonnie Liston Smith, Ramsey Lewis and Chuck Mangione. It’s the kind of music and sway that allows you to escape the overt melodies of racism and Confederate Flags and terrorism and all that stuff that robs us of comfort and quality thinking. There is a big band, New Orleans second-line snap that could incite a riot of praise and party in the Big Easy or in a remote Georgia peach orchard. There are also a couple of love songs. Shaun uses a new sensation out of Houston Texas by the name of Nikki Ross and a couple of other friends that will astound you lyrically and musically. Two others songs were inspired by his trips to South Africa. #7 Summers is a project whose major work was completed seven years ago and is now ready for release. In the time since he began to write, he has heard the melodies thousands of times and as a result the final product includes a descant. Shaun plays a melody over the melody that is musically maddening and majestic. Shaun’s major desire is to shine a light on the large number of talented musicians in Dallas. But we can help by buying and never “burning” this CD. #7 Summers…Let’s do it!!

Don’t miss God’s wake-up call Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

I don’t know about you but, there have been times when I have confused being blessed with being lucky. When it seems that life has stacked the deck against me, my worldly perspective on things can get kind of blurred. I mean life does that periodically. My point is that when this occurs and my back is truly up against the wall, I’m fortunate to be able to steady myself and come back to one very truthful thing. It’s not luck. Forever strike that from your vocabulary. I am blessed and there are not enough hours in the day to say thank you to the Almighty for this simple change in thought. What it means is that from wherever I sit, whatever my predicament or circumstances, I have not missed my wake up call from God. It may have been a long time coming, but this time I didn’t hit the snooze button. Instead I got myself out of bed and started at some point to pay attention to God’s agenda rather than my own. If you think about it, everybody could or should ask the same question. Have you missed your wake up call? Did you call the front desk and ask/pray for one? The bible is full of saints and sinners who, when God rang them up, tried their very best to play past, ignore or sleep through God’s call upon their lives. Most tried to deny it. Some begged God to ask somebody else. Many just turned over and wouldn’t believe God was actually trying to get in touch with them. Ask Jonah, Moses, Zechariah to name a few. But that’s a funny thing about God. He continues to call, sometimes with consequences for the reluctant sleeper. I’m just thankful I answered the phone. Can you imagine missing your wake up call from God and never getting another one? Like I said, I’m feeling much more than just lucky today. I would have loved to have seen Mom’s face to hear me say I’m saved. There are still people rolling over in their graves at this rather remarkable news.

Yes, there is a celebration going on. And the only reason I know this is because in my life, I know I woke up exactly one ring before the last ring of my wake up call. Now I might be wrong but from my seat, better late than never. I’m giddy today with the reality that God said, “ring him up one more time.” It stops and starts with ‘thank you.’ It includes the truth that one day I will die knowing that God loves me and that knowledge gives a whole new meaning to my entire existence. You know when you miss your wake up call, it has a tendency to ruin your whole day. I believe when you miss your wake up call from God, it has a tendency to ruin the rest of your natural life and the next life after that. I know there is someone who is reading this right now who also knows the feeling of just getting in under the wire; catching a plane, making a meeting, getting to the store right before it closes. Maybe you made it in time to talk someone into letting you in after the door was locked when they weren’t supposed to. The negative anticipation is replaced with great elation that, whew, you made it. Thank God I made it! Now I may not get to heaven but I can honestly say, I do know the way. The rest is up to me. I don’t know about you but that’s worth shouting about. The bible says count it all joy. Life and death look a whole lot different to me now. Actually, they’re pretty much the same to some extent. God is in both realms. And it’s pretty nice to find or be found and then follow Him in this one. You guys have a nice day and may God bless and keep you forever. “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2.

James

Does someone you know meet this criteria?

What if my husband finds out?

Dear Alma: My husband and I have been married for over 25 years. We’re both in our late 50s. On the outside looking in, we’re a church going happy couple, but the reality is, we’re not. No, we don’t argue or disrespect each other, but we just don’t talk much. He falls asleep in the basement most nights and I’m sleeping alone. We don’t go out on romantic dates and he never wants to try anything new. We just exist almost like roommates. And I’m sure he would be fine with this for the rest of his life. I love my husband very much and I don’t want my marriage to end. I have been seeing an old boyfriend lately who has moved back to our town. He and I have not missed a beat. We’re like two teenagers sneaking around and, needless to say, everything is hot and heavy. I know I should cut it off before my husband finds out, but I enjoy the attention. I talked to my husband the other night and told him how unhappy I was and he said he’ll do better. He hasn’t returned to our bedroom, so I’m not sure what’s going on. I just don’t know what to do.Iamnotreadytoletgoofthe way things are with the return of the “love of my life.” Do you think I should give my husband an ultimatum? — Name withheld An ultimatum to do what, not catch you at your foolishness? You’re married. Your love and devotion is reserved for your husband, only. In the good, bad, fast and slow times. This sounds like a slow season. Your husband clearly is a guy who deserves the opportunity to make it better. He isn’t abusing you, he seems to be in a comfort zone. You have invested 25 years in a person who should be respected as the LOYL. Don’t get it twisted. Girlfriend, you’re as wrong as a Wendy Williams weave and you know it. Adultery is never the acceptable behavior. Just because you’ve added lip gloss and eye liner doesn’t beautify it. You’re wrong! Ok, so your husband isn’t romantic, won’t come to bed and he isn’t hitting it like he used too. And? What can you do about it? Have you offered him a reason to come to bed? Start focusing and planning a red hot reunion with all the dedication and planning you exercised to plan your wedding, and watch happens. Break if off with the other lover. No contact whatsoever, no phone calls, emails, text messages, Facebook contact, twitter post, snail mail, nothing. Find your way back to reality. Back to honoring your husband. Girl, get your stuff together. What you’re doing is ratchet, cut it out. It’s one thing to lie to yourself when you don’t know any better, but you do. You have pulled in the wrong driveway Lady Love, cause you gets no sympathy here. —Alma

Installation is covered by the program, but the recipient must be able to pay for the electrical costs associated with operation of the air conditioning unit. If your organization serves individuals who meet the above criteria - or you believe you will become aware of individuals who meet this criteria, please contact the North Texas Air Conditioning Initiative for more information. *Although not a requirement, priority should be given to individuals who are elderly, infirmed, or have young children ** The individual must agree to be present when the installation occurs. NBA Free Agency hits Dallas Mavericks hard By Dorothy Gentry Mavsfansforlife.com

But they are going to need a lot more than a shooter if the first 24 hours of NBA free agency are any indication. Starting the seemingly mass exit was forward Al-Farouq Aminu who agreed to a four-year, $30 million deal with the Portland Trail Where Every Race Can Experience God’s Grace Blazers less than two hours after Free Agency began. The Mavericks in no position 5840 N.were Garland Ave. to offer anything that large to Aminu if they hoped to lure Jordan and Matthews from their Garland, (972) 414-1494 respectiveTX teams.

North Garland Baptist Fellowship

Less than 24 hours into NBA Free Agency, the Dallas Mavericks were down 2-0, with three other free agents dangling feet out the door and meeting with other teams. As of press time, the Mavs were still courting Los Angeles Clippers free-agent big man DeAndre Jordan. The leagueleader in rebounds last year sat down Wednesday with his representatives and a contingent of Mavs brass – including Owner Mark Cuban, Coach Rick Carlisle, and stars Dirk Nowitzki and Chandler Parson - for more than four hours discussing why he should leave L.A.

Fan favorite Tyson Chandler – a major force in the Mavs 2011 Championship run and who just returned to the Mavs last year after 3 years in New York – stunned all by signing with the Phoenix Suns, four years worth over $50 million. Chandler was the Mavericks’ Plan B at Center – until the Suns snagged him.

Sunday Worship 8am & 11 am

Jordan has Texas ties – he’s a former Texas A& M standout – and he’s an avid Dallas Cowboy’s fan and friend of Parsons who has been vocal and visible in recruiting Jordan to Dallas. But to land the “big fish” that is Jordan will take a miracle as he was meeting at press time Thursday with his current team, the L.A. Clippers - with whom he has spent his entire seven-year career. What a decision – Los Angeles or Dallas? The Mavericks were also pursuing prized free agent LaMarcus Aldridge of the Portland Trailblazers. The hometown product (he’s a graduate of Seagoville High School) has been courted by Dallas before but he didn’t want to “come home” then and hasn’t indicated that his mind has changed. As of press time

Sunday School 9:45 am

To add insult to injury, as of press time, the Sacramento Kings were pursuing Maverick free agent guards Rajon Rondo and Monta Ellis and fan favorite J.J. Barea was “seriously considering” an offer from the Miami Heat. Ellis also has serious consideration from the Indiana Pacers. All of the above essentially guaranteeing that at the minimum, 3 more Mavericks walk out the door.

Dr. Tony Mathews, Sr. Pastor www.ngbf.org

he was seriously considering traveling down I-35 to join the San Antonio Spurs. Ouch! Aldridge’s current teammate, free agent guard Wesley Matthews, is also on the radar for the Mavericks and would give them the shooting power they need.

The Mavericks’ MUST sign DeAndre Jordan – and even Wesley Matthews if they can. If not, Dallas beloved NBA franchise is in a world of trouble.
