FROM THE HILL

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the state of Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

The importance of Ramadan Muslims in North Texas and those throughout the world are experiencing the religious season known as Ramadan by refraining each day from eating and drinking from sunrise until sunset. This year the practice began on June 18th and concludes on July 17th. In addition to not eating and drinking during daylight hours, those who participate in Ramadan do not smoke, argue or engage in behavior that leads to acrimony or in activities that harm personal relationships. During the four weeks of Ramadan, the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims are urged to re-evaluate their lives. They are asked to repair broken relationships with friends or family members, and they are requested to remove negative thoughts from their minds. People of the Muslim faith believe that the prophet Muhammad was spoken to by God during the Islamic month of Ramadan, which is the most significant period of the Muslim calendar. Nearly four percent of the population of North Texas consists of people of the Muslim faith, according to census figures. Some of these individuals were born in this country while others have come from different parts of the world, including Asia, South America, Africa and Europe. They contribute significantly to the social and economic fabric of our society, and are important members of our community. In August I will be privileged to convene the 9th Annual Youth Summit & Diversity Dialogue in Dallas. Young people of various races and faiths will come together to share and celebrate their similarities, and their differences. People of Muslim faith are among those helping to plan the summit. Each day America becomes a more diverse nation. As people, there are many things that we can learn from one another. Certainly there are practices of Ramadan that all of us, no matter our faiths, can admire and share with others. Ramadan is a time of self-renewal, sacrifice, generosity and kindness. These are not only Muslim values. They are American values. They make all of us better people, and better members of the global community. To honor American Muslims who serve our country as proud members of our military services, federal and local elected officials, judges, teachers, nurses, law enforcement officials and many other professions, I recently introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives acknowledging the observance of Ramadan. Ultimately, Ramadan is a time for peaceful reflection and altruism, traits that all of us should adopt in our personal lives.

Apology accepted

We need to celebrate entrepreneurs who are good corporate citizens and work tirelessly to serve their customers. That is the case with the owner of Black Jack Pizza. Despite being pillars of the community by employing many locals, donating money, items and products and giving back in every way imaginable, black businesses in America still tend to have problems garnering the same respect as other businesses. Dorothy Johnson Jones, owner of Black Jack Pizza – a fixture on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. in the South Dallas community for years is finding that out. Despite proof of paying the monthly bill... her trash and dumpsters behind her business were not being picked up. The result? An unsightly mess and smell and flies, lots of them. The Health Department was called and things grew worse as her business was affected. I want to apologize to the whole South Dallas community for the unsightly trash and smell during this time, she said. “I fully understand my customer’s concerns. No one wants to see that (trash). This whole situation with Republic Service (dumpster company) has hurt my business. They were very unfair to us. Ms. Jones wants to ensure her customers know that she appreciates their long-time support and promises the best is yet to come. “I’ve always been grateful for the long-term support I’ve enjoyed from my customers and the City of Dallas over almost three decades in business,’ she said. “I try my best to do my part and help keep South Dallas clean. “I have the best customers in the world and I want to encourage them to hang in there with me. Things will get better, she promised. “I’ve got a new dumpster company and we are going to take measures to ensure this doesn’t happen again. When I talked with Ms. Jones, it was clear that she was upset about how the eyesore looked to her customers. She showed me several statements, along with accurate records reflecting her payments to the dumpster company. She had letters, requests for service and cancelled checks. Still, when you went outside and walked toward the dumpster, you were met with a pungent odor and swarms of flies. If I didn’t know the quality of service and cleanliness at Black Jack Pizza, the overflowing dumpster would have been a definite turnoff. For decades I have heard the wonderful stories about Black Jack Pizza’s great pizzas, burgers and tea. I accept Ms. Jones’ apology because I know that she is not the guilty party, that she is a good businesswoman and deserves our support. Now those businesses that pimp our community, well, they are a totally different story! -Cheryl Smith

CURRY: Confederate Traitors don’t deserve to be honored

Can you image waving a flag that honors Benedict Arnold, a name synonymous with treason? How about traveling to work and back on Aldrich Ames Boulevard, a tribute to the CIA mole who secretly worked for the Russians? Should we erect a statute of Robert Hanssen, the FBI computer and wiretapping expert who spent most of his career spying for the Soviet Union and Russia, in the hallway of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.? Do you favor naming public schools attended mostly by Jews after Fritz Kuhn to honor the German who lived in the U.S. and was in charge of the famous U.S. Nazi group, the German-American Bund? If you are repulsed by the thought of honoring those traitors, you should be equally indignant at the thought of erecting statues and naming streets and schools after Confederate traitors. Make no mistake about it: Those who declared war on the Union were traitors, defined as “a person who is not loyal to his or her own country, friends, etc.â€? Eleven Southern states broke from the Union for the same reason. ďżź Writing in his book, The Creation of Confederate Nationalism: Ideology and identity in the Civil War South, Drew Gilpin Faust observed, “leaders of the secession movement across the South cited slavery as the most compelling reason for southern independence.â€? Alexander Stephens, in what became known as the Cornerstone Speech, said on March 21, 1861 in Savannah, Ga., “The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution – African slavery as it exists amongst us – the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution.â€? He explained, “[The Confederate] “its corner-stone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery – subordination to the superior race – K. S. is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. Theses historical facts notwithstanding, a majority of Americans – 57 percent – view the Confederate flag as a symbol of Southern pride rather than racism, according to a recent CNN poll. It gets more interesting when the numbers are broken down by race. Of Whites polled, only 25 percent view the Confederate flag as a symbol of racism. However, 72 percent of Blacks associate the flag with racism. It is time to bring down the Confederate flag of hate, but we shouldn’t stop there. We should remove the monuments and tributes to the Civil War traitors from public buildings and streets. If Robert J. Bentley, the Republican governor of Alabama, can voluntarily remove four Confederate flags from the Capitol grounds in Montgomery and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

(R-Ky.) can recommend that a statue of Kentucky-born Jefferson Davis be removed from the state Capitol, it is time to remove the tributes to Confederate leaders from the U.S. Capitol. Visitors to the Capitol are greeted by towering statues of 11 former Confederate leaders, including Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Vice President Alexander H. Stephens and Gen. Robert E. Lee. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a civil rights icon, said it’s time for the statues to be removed. He told the Associated Press, “Young children, school children, walk by these statues, and those of us who serve in the Congress, we have to get our own house in order ... We have to have a cleansing in this place. There is still cleansing to be done at the state level. Despite the removal the Confederate flags from the Capitol grounds in Alabama, for example, the state annually celebrates Confederate Memorial Day, Jefferson Davis’ birthday, and honors Robert E. Lee on the same day it observes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. A large statue of Jefferson Davis on the Capitol grounds overlooks Dexter Avenue, where Dr. King pastored his first church. The Confederate Monument is still on the grounds and a star still marks the spot where Jefferson Davis took the oath as president of the Confederate states. Mississippi also combines the birthdays of Dr. King and Robert E. Lee, observes Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday of April and combines national observance of Memorial Day with Jefferson Davis’ birthday as a state holiday. In addition to Alabama and Mississippi, Confederate Memorial Day is also observed as a state holiday in Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Let the cleansing begin. Like Maj. General William T. Sherman, let’s march though Dixie and the rest of the nation until we rid the United States of tributes to traitors.

HALL: Justice or Else…10.10.15

Quit Playin’

By Vincent Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award-winning columnist.

45.3 million people live in poverty in the United States Unemployment rates for Black America is twice what it is for Whites 60% of people in prison are Black or Latino 32.4% of Native American youth live in poverty 28 hours from now the police will kill another black man

schools only ensures that our children continue in this wrongheaded path toward private prisons. Private prisons that have become a staple and strategy of Wall Street investors.

Facts. But on 10.10.15 1 million brothers and sisters will commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the historic 1995 Million Man March in person. Millions of others will remember that earth shaking event remotely. Student Minister and Chief Spokesperson for the Nation of Islam’s Dallas Mosque No. 48, Jeffery Muhammad put a stake in the ground. It was the same stake and sentiment that has been transmitted from the desk on the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. The time for America’s excuses for and excursions in unfettered racism must stop now. If it sounds like a threat; Well… The Local Dallas Organizing Committee held an informative and inciting press conference and rally last week at the Friendship West Baptist Church. That congregation’s Pastor, Dr. Frederick Haynes III was just one of an all star list of activists that shared the podium. Former City Councilwoman Diane Ragsdale and quite a

The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan brought together millions 20 years ago in Washington, DC.

few other notables took turns supporting the call for Black/Brown Unity that is a central theme is this 20th anniversary observance to be held in Washington D.C on October 10th. Although the lists of priorities for social justice and Black Liberation are not at all slack in America these days, this effort has pin-pointed some prevailing issues that it wants to highlight and underscore. First and foremost is the failing education system in America. The school-to-prison pipeline is real and all of the data supports the realities of its existence. The continuation of faltering public

Secondly and most timely, is the ugly history in this country of unjust killings. From the early slaughter of the Native Americans who were indigenous to this country through the lynching of Blacks during slavery and up through Jim Crowe; the trend continues. That horror has made names like Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant, and Tamir Rice infamous. This trend is as much local as it is national. There has not been one law enforcement officer indicted in the killing of a Black man in Dallas in the last 42 years. Finally, “Justice or Else” as it is slated for 10.10.15, beckons all of us to look at the rise in poverty, hunger and nakedness inside and outside America’s Shores. The increasing surge in the number of people who live in sub-human conditions is a stain on America and the world. Our international political systems as well as our

storied religious institutions have utterly failed us in securing justice. Student minister Robert S. Muhammad of Houston Texas, who was the special guest speaker, made a very realistic point during his summation of the need for Justice or Else. He has served almost 30 years and has the longest tenure within Minister Farrakhan’s official cabinet. After asking all of the audience participants under the age of 20 to convene in one area of the church, he addressed them intimately as he spoke honestly to both crowds. Muhammad mused that this generation, unlike any other in Black history, have not been taught or encouraged to fear white people or anybody else. Unlike so many of our former generations who had to be obedient and docile, these young people expect and will demand justice in a way that America has never seen before. The key to Muhammad’s message was that unifying Blacks, Brown, Indigenous Americans and other mishandled minorities, coupled with the engagement of our youth, will force America to make a change for Justice...or else!

Bledsoe has engaged corporate audiences worldwide, including FaceBook, Twitter, Google, Walt Disney World and K-Swiss. Once again, he’s 17. When both his parents were a year younger than his current age, they brought him into this world. This St. Louis, Missouri native was raised in a single-parent household. His story of determination and success serves as a source of motivation for all who encounter his presence. His goal is to change lives, which he attributes as his net worth and true measurement of success. “As long as I focus on that mission, God will put things in place for me to grow. It happens. Its been happening,” Bledsoe said. A spark ignited a flame, leading to the growth of his Young Entrepreneur University.

“He told me he wanted to be a drug dealer,” Bledsoe said. “Most kids want to be a basketball player or football player or actor, but for him it was drugs.” Bledsoe learned that the young man’s mom left him and that he had been from home to home. From the conversation, Bledsoe says he determined the only support, stability and success this teenager saw was from the drug community. Bledsoe feels the need to de-program that train of thought. “With these camps, it’s a matter of taking a young man or young woman outside of the normal environment and giving them an opportunity to succeed,” Bledsoe said. Bledsoe also sees it as an opportunity to put students on the right track. “It’s being able to say ‘I believe in you’ and giving them the pathway to do it,” he added. The first Jaylen D. “It’s a camp to help inspire and motivate young individuals who aren’t exposed to entrepreneurship as a route to change their future,” Bledsoe said. of this year in Bledsoe’s hometown of St. Louis, motivating 20 students. The camp boots up in Frisco, Texas July 20-25, 2015 and is scheduled to serve double the amount of students than the initial camp. Why Frisco? “It’s pretty much the City of Innovation; putting this camp in a city that’s going to support an effort of this nature,” Bledsoe said.

“It’s a camp to help inspire and motivate young individuals who aren’t exposed to entrepreneurship as a route to change their future,” Bledsoe said.

Forty high school students from identified organizations including the Boys & Girls Club of Collin County, Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities’ Team 22 and various area youth ministries have been pre-selected to attend the weeklong camp at the Frisco ISD Career and Technical Education Center. The camp is free and will offer awards for top results during its Final Pitch day. “We’ll give away a scholarship at the end and an investment to help the idea go,” Bledsoe said. Sponsors include Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, Del and Ann Harris Foundation, Educational Presenters Network, PDQ, The Acts Foundation, Chick-fil-A, K-Swiss, The Fashion Club of Texas and Frisco ISD. With his first camp complete, Bledsoe is logged into awareness of classroom dynamics. “I can write an awesome curriculum but it comes down to the kids in the room,” he said. Bledsoe shared stories of the excitement and quick learning styles of campers in St. Louis. He looks forward to experiencing the

In addition, he serves on many executive boards for various companies and organizations beyond his own. Being technologically savvy isn’t just for nerds anymore. It appeals to a generation of digital natives as the norm. In a world of followers, favorites and likes, Bledsoe reaches his peers in a way that is unmatched by many. He speaks their language and brings value. Most importantly, his determination is not driven by dollars. “I have to make it clear that I don’t care about the money,” Bledsoe said. “I love the money, but I’m not doing it for the money. SPIRITUALITY

Spiritual High Points of Wisdom for Daily Living Written through the Inspiration of God By: Prayer/Warrior Mission /Worker-Sis. Cm Carter

Most of us can agree that there is a void in each of our lives that only God can fill. We cannot be any more satisfied without God than flowers without rain and grass without the sunshine. God’s Word is a storehouse of wisdom and instructions. It has the necessary message for all problems that face us. We can be greatly help when we open God’s Word and prayerfully heed to it and fulfill its demands. Confession is the super key that opens the door to forgiveness. A helpful method to use when praying and studying God’s Word is to listen with your heart. The highest form of prayer comes from the depths of a humble heart. Naturally, we would not go out without clothes, we would be naked and indecently exposed.

Spiritually, if we go out without praying, we are naked and indecently exposed. Prayer is our covering. If we spent more time praying on our knees, we would have less trouble standing on our feet. It is very hard to stumble when you are on your knees praying. There is unlimited power in prayer. “More prayer, more power, little prayer little power, no prayer no power”. People who follow God, lead others in the right direction. (Proverbs3: 5-6) “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy path.” Don’t be idle. If the devil catches a person idle, he will put him to work. God calls people when they are busy, Satan calls when we are idle. The busier you stay for God, the less time you will have for the devil. God’s creed is to do good. We all need to live God’s creed. For to see good put in action is what we all need (Acts 10: 38. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and power who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil: for God was with him. The best way to approach any problem is to use the Try-angle. (TRY JESUS ANGLE). When we give ourselves to God, we place ourselves in a position to receive extra strength. Always yield the right of way to Jesus. We should always pray that our flesh be crucified and that the Spirit be glorified. “For the Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” Growing up we were taught to eat

The Right Business! Let’s Talk Coffee!

healthy, drink our milk, so that we can be healthy and not malnourish. Spiritually we can become malnourish when we don’t eat the Word of God. We are what we eat. The more we feast on God’s Word, the healthier we will become. (Jeremiah 15:16) “Thy Words I found and I did eat them.” The quality of our thoughts will ultimately determine the quality of our deeds: Take on the mind of Christ. Never give anyone a piece of your mind. You don’t have it to spare. God’s Word teaches us that as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. In life we find rain, mud and stars. It’s up to us to go through the rain, don’t get stuck in the mud and look to the stars. Remember that when you are having problems that tough times never last. Only, through the power of God, tough people do. Our character is measured by what we do when no one is looking. We fulfill our purpose when we serve, love, and obey God. One of our greatest strength is to stand still, trust and obey God. (Psalm 46:10) “Be still and know that I am God”. Always remember: Jesus it the way to walk in. Jesus said, “I am the way the truth and the life...” (St. John 14:6 ). Jesus is the method to seek in- “Seek ye first the kingdom of God…” (St. Matthew 6:33). Jesus is the bread to eat from, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedth out of the mouth of God.” (St Matthew 4:4) Jesus is the foundation to be established upon. (II Thessalonians 5:2) Prove all things. Hold fast to that which

is good. Always remember to hate the sin but love the sinner. Remember to focus on heaven goal. II Corinthians 4:18: “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” If we confess Jesus, we must possess him and show it in our daily living. (James 1:22) Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” God’s Word teaches us that as a man thinketh in his heart so is he. God’s people never say goodbye for the last time. John 11:25-26. “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.” Judge not according to appearance. Things are not always the way they look. St. John 7:24: “Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” All of our hope should be built on Jesus Christ and nothing less than his unconditional love and righteousness. God is to always to be given the highest praise. God is the source of all power, God of every nation, God of all creation. He is the hero, we are but zero. Praise God and to God be the Glory, for all the things he has done and will do. God gave us his best and he deserves our very best. Remember only what you do for God will last!

Trust Me. Trust Me not? Your Call. Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington Sometimes words alone cannot convey meaning and feelings the way we’d like them to. Trust for example. The reference point for my meaning is “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all things acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust is such a complex thing. Have you ever been betrayed by someone in whom you had total trust? Have you been able to totally trust another person since? See how easy misplaced trust takes you to a terribly vulnerable place. It’s uncomfortable. It’s abnormal. It ain’t fun. Yet, in this passage we are instructed to put our trust in the Lord. The question is can you do it? Are you able to put trust in your heart after you experience devastating betrayal? And we’ve all been betrayed in one way or another; either by having our beliefs proven false or maybe your heart has been broken. Every one knows someone who has been crippled by a lover or spouse gone crazy, or, watched someone stumble up on the truth about a situation that everybody but them knew the real deal. In the real world that kind of stuff hurts. In a real sense, once destroyed, trust ‘don’t’ come here anymore. Now wait a minute. Go out and trust in the Lord implicitly. You get my meaning? Extreme caution usually follows crippling betrayal. New relationships are founded largely on mistrust and ‘prove it to me;’ not, blind faith and unconditional trust. Life teaches us that only a fool would allow themselves to be misused again. Therein lies my question about trust and what it means to you. Can you deal with this concept everyday? How much of a struggle are you having trying to

trust people who have taught you not to give them the time of day? Do you treat all people this way or just the one(s) who betrayed you? Can you forgive? Can you ever forget? Do you really want to? And what does all of this have to do with God? Well, how are you treating Him in the trust area? “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:2. Now exactly, who’s proving what to whom? Are you requiring God to prove something to you before you trust Him? Are you demanding from God those same things you demand from someone, anyone before you would even consider giving him or her your love? You see it is so easy to succumb to a lifestyle which requires proof before love is given. It’s so easy to demand the impossible from people who are incapable of giving it to you. But how can you base your relationship with God on worldly principles grounded in betrayal and disappointment? Are you requiring God to prove His love to you before you give Him yours? The key to this trust thing lies deep within each and every one of us. We first have to confront those demons which have plagued us for years. And yes, that means all the pain that goes with them. Then and only then can we begin to even accept the concept of trust and loyalty, total and without equivocation. Because then trust means knowing. Trust means truth. Trust means no matter what, I know that regardless of conditions and circumstances, I am God’s child, made in His image and the recipient of His love. It’s a always got your back thing. May God bless and keep you always.

James

He Won’t Let Me Visit his House Dear Alma, I have been dating “David” for over eight months, but I have never been to his house. Every time I bring it up, he changes the subject or comes up with a lame excuse. I’m not sure what to think. He will stay with me for weeks at a time, so I don’t think he’s involved with someone else. I’m confused. Hello, Confused., This situation occurs more often than you might imagine. I’ve heard it pondered by countless co- workers and plenty of sister-friends. I’m not going to make this long and drawn out. Bottom line: I suspect he doesn’t have a home. You guys are kickin’

No. 1: He might be married. I’m sure you’ve wondered the same thing. Or, he may be separated and still living with the wife. No. 2: He could be living with his mom. Most men would hide this temporary, oh-I’m-just-passing-thru situation. No. 3: He could be homeless. it at your house because... No. 1: He might be married. I’m sure you’ve wondered thesame thing. Or, he may be separated and still living with the wife. No. 2: He could be living with his mom. Most men would hide this temporary, oh-I’m-just-passing-thru situation. No. 3: He could be homeless. It’s tough out there nowadays, with the economy the way it is. Maybe he’s stretching when it comes to his living conditions – a few weeks at your house, afew weeks at another woman’s house and a few weeks with his mom. Trying to pull together a security deposit and first month’s rent ain’t easy. I find it more disheartening that, after eight months, you haven’t said to him point-blank, “Take me to your crib.” He’s definitely hiding something, but you aren’t being honest, either...with yourself. You haven’t made a fuss because you really don’t want to know. Truth is easier to deal with when we deny it. This is real simple. The next time he comes by, ask him. But make sure you’re ready for the answer. Alma

Mavericks Look to Save Season By Dorothy Gentry Staffwriter It was anything but Christmas in July as the Dallas Mavericks survived a roller-coaster month to come out a little scarred but hopeful of saving the upcoming 2015-16 season. In a stunning turn of events, Big Fish DeAndre Jordan belly flopped in the NBA Free Agency waters, turned around and bit Owner/Shark Mark Cuban, and the Mavericks’ future was officially up in the air. The team found itself catapulting from the top of this summer’s Free Agency Mountain to the valley and scrambling to save their season. In the midst of playing will-he-won’t-he with DeAndre Jordan, fan favorite and star center Tyson Chandler, Energizer Bunny off the bench Al-Farouq Aminu, scoring machine Monta Ellis and every-man Amar’e Stoudemire all left the Mavericks in free agency. Big losses in light of Jordan’s flip-flop. As they turned away from Jordan, the Mavs began to reassemble their team and attempt to pull together a winning roster. They signed Wesley Matthews, former Portland Trailblazer to a four-year contract. He’s coming off an Achilles injury but is expected to make a full recovery.

They also signed Milwaukee Bucks free agent Zaza Pachulia to play center. And in a didn’t-see-it-coming move, 3 time All-Star Deron Williams, a Dallas native, has signed with the Mavs. The point guard spurned his hometown three years ago in free Where Every Race Can Experience God’s Grace agency but apparently had a change of heart as his career in 5840 N.hitGarland Ave. Brooklyn a snag. Williams, just 414-1494 turned 31, is one of just five active Garland, TX who (972) NBA players with at least 12,000 career points and 6,000 assists. The point guard is joined by LeBron James, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, and Andre Miller in that group. However, even with all of the signings, the Mavericks 2015-16 season never looked any more uncertain: It’s Coach Rick Carlise’s final year in his contract - and who knows how that will go? Superstars Dirk Nowitzki and Chandler Parsons can opt out of their contract at the end of the season. And the Mavericks’ 2016 first-round draft pick will go to Boston in the ill-fated Rajon Rondo deal unless it is among the top seven in the lottery. In the end, Jordan is now persona non grata in Dallas. And rightfully so. And the Mavericks? Find some other pieces to fill out the roster and try to save the upcoming season. There is no other way.
