Local Dallas County Business raises more than $17,000 to help Local Humane Societies
AxiaRx Launches a Prescription Plan for Residents and their Four-Legged Friends Dallas, TX – For no-kill shelters such as the Humane Society of Dallas County, Collin County Humane Society, Taylor-Jones Humane Society and DFW Humane Society, every donation is critical. The average cost to operate an animal care facility in Dallas County is approximately $25,000 a month. This includes money for staff to care for the animals daily, spays and neuters and life-saving vaccinations. As Executive Director of the DFW Humane Society, Sarah Kammerer, told us: “We take in about 800 animals a year. Having monthly money coming into theshelter helps cover regular expenses.” Felicia Kalish, of the Humane Society of Dallas County, added: “Private donations can be very sporadic. When there’s some consistency, we know what funding to expect and can budget better.” AxiaRx and the Humane Card Thanks to the efforts of one company, shelters are receiving regular charitable donations to help defray costs. AxiaRx is a free prescription card available to Dallas Metroplex residents who may be having
trouble paying the high cost of prescription drugs. Every time their Humane Card is used; a donation is made to area humane societies. As an added benefit, not only does the card cover prescriptions for people, but many pet prescriptions are discounted as well. In North Texas, the program has raised more than $5,000, 80% of that since January alone. On a larger scale, AxiaRx has donated 64% of its net profits to 23 animal welfare organizations and raised more than $17,000 since June 2013. The funds provided offset the costs of rescue, adoption and spay/neuter services. But, how does using the card affect residents? According to the American Community Survey released in August by the U.S. Census Bureau over one million Metroplex residents are uninsured while many thousands more are forced to pay full price because their insurance doesn’t cover their prescription. Currently, the AxiaRx prescription service has already saved local consumers more than $337,000 with the average card carrier saving 49% off prescription drugs.
in Texas participate in the prescription card program as well as national retail chains such as Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, Target, Tom Thumb, Kroger and many others. There are currently over 50,000 drugs available for a discount. “We are so grateful for his wonderful program. This kind of regular support is essential to keeping the shelter afloat,” said Kalish. The AxiaRx prescription company is currently looking for other animal welfare organizations that wish to join the Humane Card program. To learn more about becoming an AxiaRx partner or about obtaining a free prescription card, visit AxiaRx online. Keep Garland Beautiful successfully implemented programs to prevent litter, reduce waste, beautify community areas and educate local citizens last year. KGB sponsors the Spring Don’t Mess with Texas Trash Off and the Fall Trash Bash, two annual events that encourage community participation to keep our city clean and litter free. The Fall Trash Bash will be held on October 19, 2013. To stay in good standing with KTB, community affiliates must annually submit a report, pay a fee, attend at least
one training session and participate in at least one KTB-endorsed activity. In 2004, the organization introduced the concept of Silver Star recognition, to reward those communities who sought to go above and beyond the established requirements. To achieve this status, affiliates are required to meet additional benchmarks; they must share information on their mission and goals, answer questions about their programs and initiatives, and participate in the Keep Texas Beautiful or Governor’s Community Achievement Awards programs. KTB formally recognized Silver Star communities during its 46th Annual Conference in downtown San Antonio, which was held June 18-20, 2013. Eat high on the hog: pig out at El Centro food event! (Dallas) – Some folks live high on the hog. Some folks eat high on the hog. Both are welcome to feast on “all things pork” during a special foodie event, “Hop ‘n Hog,” at El Centro College on Thurs., July 25. Pounds of pork will be paired with “hopped”-up, bubbling beer – that’s why it’s called “Hop ‘n Hog” – presented by area chefs and local brewers, including Four Corners Brewery. The 6:30 p.m. event will feature a five-course “all things pork” reception and dinner. All tickets must be purchased in advance because seating is limited; the cost is $65 per ticket, and proceeds will go to the El Centro Exes Alumni Fund. SHARPTON: We Lost the Battle, But the War’s Far From Over By Rev. Al Sharpton
Two weeks after the inexcusable death of young Trayvon Martin, I received a call from the attorney representing the Martin family, Benjamin Crump. It was a plea for assistance as the person responsible for the 17-year-old’s death was walking around freely as if nothing had happened. George Zimmerman wasn’t arrested that fateful night. George Zimmerman wasn’t arrested the next day. George Zimmerman, in fact, wasn’t arrested for over 40 days after killing a teenager. It was only because of a rallying cry for justice that the Sanford police department had to do its job and place handcuffs around Zimmerman. It was only after tens of thousands marched and protested that a special prosecutor was assigned to the case, who then brought charges that they failed to bring. And it was only then that this case finally went to trial. After this weekend’s atrocious verdict, some are acting as if a trial was automatic from the beginning. Let’s not have amnesia. Grassroots activism and mobilization for truth are the only reason why we even know the names Trayvon and Zimmerman. And they will once again be the reason why we take the fight to a federal level. The jury’s decision has left us with an atrocity and a disgrace to any American who believes in freedom, equality and justice. Interfering with the right of a
person to walk home having committed no crime or trespassing is an outrageous travesty and a violation of that person’s civil liberties. Trayvon Martin had a civil right to go home that night. He never made it to his destination because of the actions of one man, and one man alone who was not a member of law enforcement and had no authority to disrupt his right of movement. The Martin family, their lawyers and I met with U.S. federal attorneys last year to look into the case. They suspended their investigation as the state proceeded with its own. Following this weekend’s incomprehensible decision, we must reinstitute the federal investigation into the protection of the civil rights of Trayvon Martin. My organization, National Action Network (NAN), and I call on people to demonstrate in front of federal courthouses in 100 cities across the country this Saturday at noon. Whether you’re Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, male, female -- if you are on the side of truth and progress you must rally this Saturday and push for a federal investigation. If we allow the killing of an unarmed Black teenager to be turned into some sort of circus where the responsible party blames the victim, then we have reached the height of absurdity. But in this moment of frustration, we cannot become so disillusioned that we lose focus. We will not get hopeless in this situation, we will get organized. Watching protests take place across the country yesterday in support of Trayvon was encouraging. Overwhelmingly peaceful, these demonstrations brought
together a cross section of people from all backgrounds and ages to demand justice. We must continue with that same passion and vigor this Saturday, and in the weeks and months ahead. NAN and Martin Luther King III will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s ‘March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom’ next month. Another key central theme of the rally will be justice for Trayvon and the protection of civil rights for all the Trayvons of the nation. We will convene in Washington, D.C. on August 24th for the ‘National Action to Realize the Dream’ demonstration (please visit nationalactionnetwork.net for more information). Just as a multiethnic rally of hundreds of thousands pushed for change 50 years ago, we shall do the same in 2013. Closely observing the Zimmerman trial, one fact served as a glaring reminder of the insanity of the entire fiasco: Zimmerman never was a cop. He was a citizen who was told by 911 dispatchers not to follow Trayvon; he was told, “We don’t need you to do that. He, a self-professed community watchman, made assumptions such as, “This guy looks like he’s up to no good or he’s on drugs or something. Zimmerman even had the audacity to say “f__king punks. These a__holes, they always get away. Well, who are “they? The bottom line is, if Zimmerman had not defied the orders of the 911 dispatcher and acted on his own assumptions, Trayvon would be in the loving arms of his parents today. When states failed us decades ago, it was the federal government that stepped
in with federal protections. Today, as we are watching another grave setback to justice, it is incumbent upon the federal justice department to investigate possible civil rights violations in this case. One voice distinctly absent from the court proceedings the last few weeks was that of Trayvon. His voice will forever be silenced because of the actions of one individual. On that horrific day in February of 2012, Trayvon went to the store, bought Skittles and an iced tea. Young Trayvon, who had only recently turned 17, had a civil right to go home. He had a civil right to walk in that neighborhood. He had a civil right to ignore some lone civilian questioning him if he wanted to. He even had a civil right to defend himself if followed and attacked by Zimmerman. Trayvon had undeniable civil rights that are to be protected under the laws of this nation. We must fight for those rights because he no longer can. This weekend was upsetting and frustrating to many, but we cannot remain in a state of sorrow. While we continue to mourn Trayvon’s death, we must fight for truth. We may have lost the battle, but the war for equality has just begun. Together, we will get there; together we will bring light to the depths of dark injustice that still remains. We owe it to a kid that just wanted Skittles and an iced tea. Rev Al Sharpton is the president of the National Action Network.
JOHNSON: Women must have access to Health Care By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson
Recently, the Texas Legislature approved an alarming bill that would ban abortion after 20 weeks with only narrow
exceptions. The bill would shut down many health clinics. Yet, the unrelenting attacks by Republicans on women’s choices have hit a nerve, and women across Texas are standing up to protect their rights in staggering numbers. The actions of Republican lawmakers
are insincere and will hinder women’s access to health care. If Republicans truly wanted to reduce abortions in Texas, they would invest in reproductive health care and comprehensive sex education across the state. Yet the anti-choice legislation could forcibly close three dozen licensed health centers in Texas where women receive reproductive health services, cancer screenings and abortions. I am not pro-abortion, but I do believe a woman should be able to make intensely personal decisions about a pregnancy with the counsel of a doctor, the support of family members, and reliance on her faith------- without the interference of politicians. Women who are knowledgeable about reproductive health and have access to contraception are more likely to avoid

unwanted pregnancies, precluding the need for many abortions. Texas Republicans have not connected the dots. Instead of supporting access to reproductive health care, Republicans chose to cut the state’s family planning budget by two-thirds in 2011. These cuts were projected to cause 284,000 women to lose access to family planning services and add $273 million in costs to taxpayers due to unplanned pregnancies in Texas. Texas has the fifth highest teen pregnancy rate of any state in the country, but Republicans have consistently opposed one of the best tools we have to reduce teen pregnancy: comprehensive sex education. These programs are demonstrably effective in helping youth delay sexual activity, reduce the number of sexual partners, and increase the use of contraception.

In fact, researchers using data from the National Survey of Family Growth found that teens who received comprehensive sex education were 50 percent less likely to get pregnant than teens who received abstinence-only education. The refusal of Texas Republicans to allow women to access education, receive reproductive health care, and make decisions about their personal health defies reason, science and is unconstitutional. It is truly unacceptable. Republicans should be working to expand, rather than curb family planning services and sex education. I hope Republicans in the state legislature have a change of heart. Women in Texas deserve better. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson is serving her 11th term representing the 30th Congressional District of Texas.

JACKSON: Obama should lead fight to revive Voting Rights Act President Barack Obama should lead a forceful drive to revive the Voting Rights Act, which was effectively disemboweled by the Supreme Court’s decision last week. All celebrate the 1965 Act as the most consequential civil rights legislation of the past century. Its passage was central to the building of the New South, opening the way to attracting foreign investment in auto factories, creating CNN, hosting the Super Bowl, even electing presidents. One afflicted with a poisoned heart is often blind to its effects. The South learned only after the civil rights legislation that segregation was blighting its own potential. In 2006, the Congress, after weeks of hearings and thousands of pages of testimony and evidence, overwhelmingly reauthorized the law by a vote of 98-0 in the Senate and 390-33 in the House. Legislators chose to sustain Section 4 that identified which counties and states had a history of discrimination sufficient that changes in voting rights would be subject to prior approval by the Justice Department under Section 5. “Preclearance” not only blocked laws with discriminatory effect, but it also inhibited efforts to suppress the right to vote. But last week, Justice John Roberts, writing for the court in a five-four decision, argued that “our country has changed.”
He and the activist reactionaries on the doubt, but in 2012 South Carolina passed court substituted their judgment for that of a discriminatory voting act that was struck elected officials and struck down Section down by the courts. 4. VIEWPOINT
With Republican office holders increasingly worried by the growing numbers of African-American, Latino, Asian-American and other minority voters, measures to curtail voting rights have spread. It is perverse that the chief justice thought this was the time to overrule the congressional judgment. Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) defended the court’s decision, saying that his state had witnessed “tremendous progress” in voting rights. Progress, no
We need to keep the referees on the court. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has already pledged hearings to begin reformulating Section 4. Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said that he hoped the House would find a “responsible way forward.” The president should elevate this issue so that Americans can see who stands for voting rights, and who stands in the way. Over the past years, the new South has
made progress, but that is in large part because the Voting Rights Act put referees on the field to enforce the law. Will Republicans join Democrats in reviving bipartisan support for remedying the Supreme Court’s wrong-headed decision? Or will they use the court’s decision to intensify their efforts to suppress the vote? By pushing hard for action, the president can help re-create the bipartisan support that is vital for our progress as one nation. - See more at: http://rainbowpush.org/ commentaries/single/obama_should_lead_ fight_to_revive_voting_rights_act#sthash. gGSvSPp9.dpuf The Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, is one of America’s foremost civil rights, religious and political figures. Over the past forty years, he has played a pivotal role in virtually every movement for empowerment, peace, civil rights, gender equality, and economic and social justice. Davis: First Responders to First Flight School My Day By Ester Davis, EDTV Did you know there are approximately 15,000 airports in the United States? They create thousands of jobs all centered around the intriguing and constantly evolving world of aviation. Intentionally interrelated at all airports are all kind of schools, i.e., helicopter schools, sea plane schools, flight, and aircraft schools. Listed in the State of Texas are over 71 aviation related institutions of learning. And I have to pause to personally thank you. . and you, for reading, responding, emailing and calling about the aviation articles, especially “Ten Year Old Pilots.” We are excited and positively proud of the first ever flight school at Dallas Executive Airport (DEA) located in the Southern Sector of Dallas at Hampton Road and Hwy 67. I agree with you, finally some good news. It is opened to the public and destined to continue. For many years, the Frontier of Flight Museum at Love Field has sponsored a “Flight School” and according to Dr. Sharon Spalding, the museum’s educational director, welcome the idea of expanding the program. Mrs. Inez Clark, the project consultant, noted that the Dallas Executive Airport was the logical choice for a satellite program,
which makes it accessible to youth residing in this area. Classes start July 22, for 10 to 12 year olds, and all courses are STEM based, i.e., science, technology, engineering, math. With all the plans and personnel on board, a short window of less than two months to the first class, the next move was to the community pursuing the quest for success. Activist, former Mayor, veteran Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway responded with an invitation to his office. It was a short meeting. With his ‘anything-for- the- kids’ attitude, there was the question “what-do-you-want”? Don’t you just love that question! In office less than a month, Councilmember Adam Medrano, District Two, immediately came for a visit to the Frontier of Flight Museum(FOFM) to hear and learn more about the museum’s highly popular summer enrichment program and the new satellite program. The one hundred(100+) plus students making history will fly on flight simulators, learn the Pilot’s Phonetic Alphabet, meet pilots, navigators, aircraft mechanics, visit airport hangers and businesses during their “training” at DEA. More importantly, to have the FOFM, this team of pilots retired and active, aviation educators, clergy and corporations working in concert is something only a
CITY like DALLAS could master. Next week more on ‘first responders’ in action, grandmothers and parent
participating. Ester Davis can be reached at 214.376.9000.

Pastor Reed to perform in Dallas Gospel sensation Pastor Jai Reed will be in the Dallas area from Friday, July 19th Sunday, July 21st, 2012. Pastor Jai Reed is a native of New Orleans, La. A Stellar Award nominee, he is the pastor of the New Beginnings Christian Center. He is responsible for such songs as Praise, Secret Place, A Joy in Serving God, Start Over Again and He Touched Me just to name a few. He has toured most of the United States and has toured extensively in Africa, Brazil, Europe and other parts of the world. He is a highly sought after singer and preacher. Every once in a while a talent comes along who grabs everyone’s attention leaving an indelible mark. Pastor Jai Reed is an artist who has done just that! When he sings he becomes the vehicle through which the intent of worship and praise is fully recognized. His commanding vocal talent is at a level of brilliant achievement. Please hear Pastor Jai in his finest hour on his newest CD release “Jai Reed.” This incredible project features the sensational hit singles “Secret Place” and Praise” which echoes success! This project features a smorgasbord of phenomenal
or
known and unknown vocalists, writers and producers. Their fantastic talents coupled with Pastor Jai’s creative edge readily document Pastor Jai’s labor-intensive versatility on this project. In fact, this project is very dear to Pastor Jai because he is a worshipper extraordinaire. His exceptional vocal talent on this project takes melody and harmony in a completely new direction. This bona fide project is a dynamic masterpiece of remarkable “Worship and Praise” and very edgy “Contemporary Urban” gospel songs. The exceptional lyrics and distinct infused anointing throughout this project defy any defined boundaries. Significantly,
you will experience Pastor Jai standing on the edge of an artistic epiphany in another dimension. If you thought you heard his best -- his best just got better! This project is a “must have” for your gospel collection. Ultimately, Pastor Jai encourages his audience to seriously listen to the lyrics resulting in a very extraordinary worship experience. If you enjoyed Pastor Jai’s debut project “Anointed For Purpose” you will be absolutely thrilled with his signature masterpiece “Pastor Jai Reed.” He deliberately opens his heart and let his music evolve into the most worshipful musical story which ends well! At the onset on cut one, you enter His gates with “Praise.” While the “Praise” is going up, you ascend into the “Secret Place.” While in the presence of God -- God confirms to you “I Will Ease Your Pain.” Now, totally assured, you just lose yourself in worship and openly convey “How Much You Mean To Me.” At this point in worship, you cry loud to God, “Cover Me!” Ascending higher and lost in the spirit you tearfully say, “Have I Told You,” Lord I “Love Ya” and “You Alone.”
Spiritually Speaking…
Learning lessons
By James A. Washington
Ever since I’ve been on this walk of mine, I have many times found myself at a loss for direction, of meaning, spiritual understanding and even remorse. Sometimes you just wish you hadn’t done something, said something or, thought about things in a way you know is wrong. Thankfully, more often than not, whenever I’m at a loss for understanding, I inevitably pray for wisdom. It’s just something I do. In my own way, I believe if I ask the Lord for wisdom to understand why I’m going through this or that, then maybe I can
(1) long life, (2) wealth and (3) honor. It can make your life (4) pleasant and (5) lead you safely through it. Those who become wise are, get this, (6) happy. Now the minister ’s m e s s a g e dissected this in a marvelous way that I cannot. But I came away from service with a whole new view as to how to approach life. My prayers for wisdom took on a whole new sense of urgency. Think about it. Long life, wealth, honor, pleasure, security and ultimately happiness are all obtained
In my own way, I believe if I ask the Lord for wisdom to understand why I’m going through this or that, then maybe I can learn my lesson(s) quicker and save some pain and anguish. learn my lesson(s) quicker and save some pain and anguish. At the very least, I should come to know something that might bring me to a spiritual conclusion about a particular situation or circumstance and then find peace. I believe it’s better to ask God for help in understanding, than to blindly ask Him for the problem’s elimination because going through it, might be the only way for me to learn. It’s called tough love. It’s recognized as experience. Believe it or not experience leads us all to testimony. James 1:5 tells us that if you ask God for wisdom, He will give it to you generously without finding fault. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault and, it will be given to him.” It is my simple understanding that Solomon had his choice of anything and he chose wisdom, which gives great meaning to the Book of Proverbs. I heard a remarkable sermon one Sunday that allowed me to be thankful for pleading with God for what appears to be the right thing. The minister broke it down like this. Through wisdom you get everything you want. It’s contained in Proverbs 3:1318. I was amazed. There it was. Wisdom is more valuable than jewels. Nothing you could ever want can compare to it. Wisdom offers you
via the acquisition of wisdom. What more is there? I found it of particular interest that Proverbs, widely accepted as, written by Solomon who was granted wisdom by God, is all about how to live. If ever you needed a roadmap, here it is. The key to becoming wise, as with everything else starts with fear i.e. reverence for the Lord. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…if you are wise, your wisdom will reward you.” Proverbs 9:10. I don’t know about you but that’s it for me. It answers my need to know and gives me the insight I so desperately need to get through such a dangerous world. If you’ve got the time read or reread the Book of Proverbs. For the next 30 days that’s what I’ll be doing in hopes of gaining even more insight. You can help me as it says in Proverbs 9:9, “Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still…” Thank you for reading and rereading and may God bless and keep you always.

Justice for Trayvon Martin Rally A local and national response to the verdict in the Trayvon Martin case WHERE: Dallas City Hall Plaza - 1500 Marilla - Dallas, TX
Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III will lead a host of area churches, concerned citizens, and civic organizations in a rally at Dallas City Hall Plaza on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. For the “Justice for Trayvon Rally. This is a part of Rev. Al Sharpton’s movement to host peaceful prayer vigils in over 100 cities across the nation. The rally will feature the following speakers: Dr. Karry Don Wesley of Antioch Fellowship, Dr. Jerry Christian of the African American Pastors Coalition, Dr. Marcus King of Disciple Central Community Church, Dr. Robert Canady, III of All Nations Fellowship Church, Rev. Bryan Carter of Concord Church, Michael J. Sorrell, President of Paul
w w w. G A R L A N D J O U R N A L . co m Quinn College, Commissioner John Wiley Price, and most importantly, the voices of our teens and young adults who have been moved to respond to this travesty of injustice. National guest speaker will be Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, Georgetown professor, preacher and political commentator who will close the rally. Dr. Haynes said, “We want to join the forces of good across this country who demand the U.S. Justice Department to file charges against George Zimmerman for violating the civil rights of Trayvon Martin. “However, we intend that this movement will jump start the repeal of unjust laws that have proven a particular travesty upon Black men and the poor in this nation. Specifically, we will actively challenge the Death Penalty, “The War on Drugs”, Mandatory Sentencing, Three Strikes and several other legal practices that have produced unprecedented numbers of men and women in the America’s prison population. “We demand that judges be allowed to judge without handcuffs and that the state place more emphasis on prevention, drug counseling and rehabilitation than on feeding the “School to Prison Pipeline.” This is a local commencement of a new commitment to change the laws of this nation.” Victor Hugo once said; “If the soul is left in darkness, sins will be committed. The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but the one who causes the darkness.”

Ask Gwen Gwendolyn Baines is an author, lecturer and syndicated advice columnist. The “Ask Gwendolyn Baines” advice column is distributed by the National Newspaper Publishers’ Association.Washington, D.C
I am old enough to be his mother! Dear Gwendolyn: Six months ago, I was in the process of building my house. One morning a construction worker delivered the kitchen cabinets. He accidentally ran his truck into the corner of my side porch. He agreed to fix it himself – begging me not to report the incident to his foreman. Gwendolyn, I am 65 and the man that is in love with me is 32. All my adult life I have been misused at work, by my family and people from all venues of life. Before meeting this man, I had come to the conclusion all people were cruel and unkind. But this man is perfect. Leslie Dear Leslie: There is too much of an age difference. I suggest you end your relationship with this ‘perfect’ man immediately. Let me tell you this: I strongly feel the accident was staged. Elderly women with money are prime prey to men with none. I want you to seriously think about your feelings. Too badly no one told you that the world will chew you up, spit you out, and stomp your body into the ground. People will treat you the way you allow them to do. Let no one cause you to have an unhappy day. Some people (especially family and coworkers) are so miserable the only joy they receive is when they have made others feel the same. Think about it. Whatever they say or do, ignore. Never stop to give thought to people who possess — an ignorant mind. Gwen

Groundbreaking Festival strives to redefine, encourageFaith-Based and Family Films Jennifer Hudson and Terrance Howard team to tell the love affair between Winnie and Nelson Mandela in "Winnie" making its screen debut at the International Faith & Family Film Festival to be held at MegaFest Aug 29-31 in Dallas, TX. The inaugural International Faith and Family Film Festival will debut at Bishop T.D. Jakes' MegaFest 2013 in Dallas, August 29-31, at the Omni Dallas Hotel. The film festival will showcase projects including Fox Searchlight's "Black Nativity," Image Entertainment's "Winnie Mandela" and Sony Pictures Entertainment's "Heaven is for Real." Actress Regina King is also expected to attend. Works from BET and a range of other high quality films from around the world will also be highlighted. Bishop Jakes, who has long appreciated the entertainment media's influence in helping shape cultural messages and bring people to Christ, believes a new and vibrant "faith and family" film festival will raise the bar and change perceptions about what constitutes a faith-oriented film. "Americans are looking for wholesome entertainment that reflects the values they practice and teach their children every day. We're filling that void," said Jakes. "This film festival is designed to encourage studios and the rising number of faith and family-based film companies to help this type of entertainment grow." Wholly original, the International Faith and Family Film Festival has already attracted some of the most powerful players in Hollywood, including William Morris Endeavor Partner/Agent Charles King; Brian Edwards, producer of Mark Burnett's record-setting History Channel series "The Bible;" DeVon Franklin, senior vice president of production at Columbia TriStar Pictures; Jeff Yordy, former director of marketing for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment; Nikkole Denson-Randolph, vice president of special & alternative content for
AMC Theatres; and representatives from Creative Artists Agency. The festival will also feature panel discussions moderated by Mary Claire Kendall of "Forbes," Kirstin Wilder, vice president and managing editor of "Variety," Sarah Pulliam Bailey of "The Wall Street Journal," and Kevin Frazier, host of "OMG! Insider." Discussions will cover "Marketing within the Faith Based Community," "The Now and Future of Faith-Based Film & TV," "Getting Your Film/TV Production Launched," and "The Rise of Digital Filmmaking, Distribution & Marketing." "Heaven is for Real," based on the testimony of a four-year-old Nebraska boy, who visited heaven and lived to
share his story after emergency surgery, will also be the subject of a roundtable discussion during the film festival. Randall Wallace ("Secretariat" "Braveheart") is directing and Joe Roth ("Oz the Great and Powerful," "Alice in Wonderland") is producing the film, which is still in production. Moreover, the film festival will feature high-energy actor and screenwriter workshops, keynote addresses and a Screenwriters' Treatment Competition, the winner of which will have his or her project developed by TD Jakes Enterprises. "This is more than just a film festival," Jakes said. "It is an exciting and emotional re-imagining of all that cinema can and should be for ourselves and future generations. Getting our hearts right and our families back together again is paramount. “With this festival we hope to provide more high-quality, family friendly and Bible-centered films over time. This is an essential ingredient for the healing and strengthening of our culture. "

The idea of working toward a Major League Baseball career served as the greatest inspiration through his teenage years much more so than the concept of practicing music. After his parents consistently pushed and encouraged him to stick with music, Zo! discovered a newfound passion by teaching himself how to play piano by ear by age 11. Zo! got his production start in 1992 when his parents brought home a Proteus MPS keyboard and a Brother PDC100 sequencer for him to figure out. Since then, he has emphasized the use of live instrumentation as the blueprint for his music while constantly looking to expand his sound with each album release.

Studies by the University of Texas at Dallas Institute of Urban Policy, United Way and Texas A&M are taking place now to assess the quality of life in the South Dallas community before billion dollar projects involving the new DART Light Rail and the Trinity

Toll Road are brought to the area. Some construction has begun with the demolition of homes to follow later this year. At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
