Lesson from Aretha
After the passing of the Queen of Soul, Ms. Aretha Franklin, I read veteran journalist and radio personality Dewayne Dancer’s “Aretha Franklin Experience and I said one day I would share mine.
Eva Coleman and Earline Franklin You see, although every experience may not be flattering; that does not mean that you hide it. Sometimes sharing, even those embarrassing or not so flattering moments, can be liberating and a teachable moment for others. Which brings me to my truth. Over the years I have been asked what were some of my most interesting/famous interviews. For various reasons I could name James Brown, Dr. Maya Angelou, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, the always insightful Dick Gregory, the elegant Diahann Carroll or Angela Bassett or Susan L. Taylor, the candid Dionne Warwick, the endearing Pam Grier or Bernie Mac or Ptosha Storey, the prolific Chuck D or Nikki Giovanni, the thought-provoking Moe Dewese (Kool Moe Dee) or Tavis Smiley or Rev. Michael Eric Dyson, the reflective Teena Marie or Mamie Till Mobley or Kwame Kilpatrick, the dynamic Dr. Freddie Haynes III or Sista Souljah or Mins. Ava Muhammad, Jesse Jackson, or Al Sharpton or the witty and inspiring Ambassador Ron Kirk or Angela Robinson, Teddy Pendergrass or Tyler Perry, or, the scholarly Julianne Malveaux or Ivan Van Sertima. Or I could go on and on because there have been so many. And there have also been those who aren’t household names but they were special to me. I could talk about that brother, comedian/actor Rodney Perry who was not only a joy to interview, but a well-prepared and engaging conversationalist, who had actually researched me! But how about the two that got away? Now I know I have a reputation for being tough. I don’t know why. Sure I have high expectations, however, I can’t for the life of me understand why people let others have higher expectations for them than they have for themselves. During my more than 20 years, inside the walls of Soul 73 KKDA; there were talk show hosts who “producers were warned about. Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price was not one of those because he was paired with one of the best in the business and they did their thing! I did my thing with a few, like Mario White and Steve Ladd’s granddaughter, Dee Dee, but they had moved on to the big time! So you did hear about Cheryl Smith and Millie Jackson. And you See MY TRUTH, page 6

Off-duty officer murders unarmed man in his home BY CHERYL SMITH “Not Again. Not another hashtag! That’s the cry around the country and now across the waters as many heard the news reports that yet another unarmed Black man had been gunned down by a police officer on Friday, September 7. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes of Dallas’ Friendship-West Baptist Church said he was in South Africa when he and others heard that Botham Shem Jean was in his home when an intruder, Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, entered the premises and shot the 26-year-old PricewaterhouseCoopers analyst. “People are wondering, ‘what is going on,’’’ said Dr. Haynes as he stood with other members of the African American Pastors Coalition (AAPC) in front of the Dallas Police Department Headquarters, as they prayed for the Jean family, answers, transparency, the Chief of Police U. Renee Hall, the city and yes, Officer Guyger. “Our community is sick and tired. All I’m hearing is the mystery surrounding the circumstances. We are concerned about ‘Blue bias.’ We want this (shootings of innocent Black men and women) to stop. We want to be served and protected by the police department! It was a somber Pastor Bryan Carter who talked about the shooting of the Saint Lucia native who attended college at Harding University in Searcy, AR and was “heavily involved in his church, West Dallas Church of Christ. We’re encouraging peaceful dialogue, but demand justice and answers, said Pastor Carter, who is the senior pastor of Concord Church in Dallas, and president of (AAPC). “We expect justice to be carried out. The officer has to be held accountable and we want justice in every way. Pastor Carter also acknowledged that there has been communication from a diverse community of spiritual leaders who are just as concerned and have offered support. justice will be sought without bias, and no one will be shielded from facing accountability or responsibility for this tragic situation. “I request all to join me in keeping the family of Botham Jean in our prayers. The Texas Rangers have since referred the case to Dallas County District Attorney’s office where DA Faith Johnson said a full investigation will be conducted and that a charge of murder is still possible. The decision will come from the grand jury. Representing the Jean family are Lee Merritt, Daryl Washington and Ben Crump. According to Attorney Merritt, the last words of Mr. Jean are believed to be, “‘Oh my God, why did you do that?’" Anton Edmunds, Saint Lucia Ambassador to the US and Saint Lucia Prime Minister Allen Chastanet met with Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and members of the family, friends and media as they also sought answers. Sr. Editor Eva D. Coleman met with Mr. Jean’s mother, attorneys and dignitaries from his home. She described her experience. “I met Botham Jean’s mother, Allison Jean, today, she said. I couldn’t bring myself to take her picture. As a widow, I know the feeling. I know ‘the look.’ There’s an emptiness and hollowness that comes with losing someone so close. I gave her a hug and quietly prayed for peace and mental stability during our embrace. “I greeted and briefly spoke with super attorney Ben Crump, who is in town. He is synonymous with The Movement. While Ms. Coleman already knew Atty. Crump, it was her first introduction to Prime Minister Chastanet and Ambassador Edmunds. “Although they’ve been here to support the Jean family, there are still no answers, she continued. “I think we all were walking around like zombies. This is so much bigger than a hashtag. The only truth we know is that Bo (Mr. Jean) is gone. Harding University issued this statement: The Harding family learned this morning of the tragic death of 2016 alumnus Botham Jean who was shot in his home last night. Originally from St. Lucia, Botham was a member of
