Lesson from Aretha
After the passing of the Queen of Soul, Ms. Aretha Franklin, I read veteran journalist and radio personality Dewayne Dancer’s “Aretha Franklin Experience� and I said one day I would share mine.
Eva Coleman and Earline Franklin You see, although every experience may not be flattering; that does not mean that you hide it. Sometimes sharing, even those embarrassing or not so flattering moments, can be liberating and a teachable moment for others. Which brings me to my truth. Over the years I have been asked what were some of my most interesting/famous interviews. For various reasons I could name James Brown, Dr. Maya Angelou, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, the always insightful Dick Gregory, the elegant Diahann Carroll or Angela Bassett or Susan L. Taylor, the candid Dionne Warwick, the endearing Pam Grier or Bernie Mac or Ptosha Storey, the prolific Chuck D or Nikki Giovanni, the thought-provoking Moe Dewese (Kool Moe Dee) or Tavis Smiley or Rev. Michael Eric Dyson, the reflective Teena Marie or Mamie Till Mobley or Kwame Kilpatrick, the dynamic Dr. Freddie Haynes III or Sista Souljah or Mins. Ava Muhammad, Jesse Jackson, or Al Sharpton or the witty and inspiring Ambassador Ron Kirk or Angela Robinson, Teddy Pendergrass or Tyler Perry, or, the scholarly Julianne Malveaux or Ivan Van Sertima. Or I could go on and on because there have been so many. And there have also been those who aren’t household names but they were special to me. I could talk about that brother, comedian/actor Rodney Perry who was not only a joy to interview, but a well-prepared and engaging conversationalist, who had actually researched me! But how about the two that got away? Now I know I have a reputation for being tough. I don’t know why. Sure I have high expectations, however, I can’t for the life of me understand why people let others have higher expectations for them than they have for themselves. During my more than 20 years, inside the walls of Soul 73 KKDA; there were talk show hosts who “producers� were warned about. Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price was not one of those because he was paired with one of the best in the business and they did their thing! I did my thing with a few, like Mario White and Steve Ladd’s granddaughter, Dee Dee, but they had moved on to the big time! So you did hear about Cheryl Smith and Millie Jackson. Off-duty officer murders unarmed man in his home BY CHERYL SMITH “Not Again. Not another hashtag!� That’s the cry around the country and now across the waters as many heard the news reports that yet another unarmed Black man had been gunned down by a police officer on Friday, September 7. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes of Dallas’ Friendship-West Baptist Church said he was in South Africa when he and others heard that Botham Shem Jean was in his home when an intruder, Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, entered the premises and shot the 26-year-old PricewaterhouseCoopers analyst. “People are wondering, ‘what is going on,’’’ said Dr. Haynes as he stood with other members of the African American Pastors Coalition (AAPC) in front of the Dallas Police Department Headquarters, as they prayed for the Jean family, answers, transparency, the Chief of Police U. We want to be served and protected by the police department!� It was a somber Pastor Bryan Carter who talked about the shooting of the Saint Lucia native who attended college at Harding University in Searcy, AR and was “heavily involved� in his church, West Dallas Church of Christ. �We’re encouraging peaceful dialogue, but demand justice and answers,� said Pastor Carter, who is the senior pastor of Concord Church in Dallas, and president of (AAPC). “We expect justice to be carried out. The officer has to be held accountable and we want justice in every way.� Pastor Carter also acknowledged that there has been communication from a diverse community of spiritual leaders who are just as concerned and have offered support. During the January, 2017 confirmation hearing for U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions Georgia Congressman John Lewis and New Jersey Senator Corey Booker testified against the Senator from Alabama becoming the nation’s chief law enforcement officer. The two esteemed legislators expressed their concerns that Sessions would
lead a Justice Department that would be hostile to minority voting rights, and that welcomed state-sponsored voter suppression such as the law passed by the Texas legislature requiring registered voters to present state-approved voter identification before they could cast their ballots. Nearly two years later, the opposition of my colleagues
and that of members of the Congressional Black Caucus and other members of the Democratic Party seems prescient. The Justice Department, led by Attorney General Sessions, stands as an impediment to the voting and civil rights of racial minorities, and to those of other minority groups. With the crucial November mid-term elections approaching minority voters cannot expect any help from the Justice Department. That is why it is so important that voters come out in large numbers, and that those who are not registered to vote do so imme-
diately! National Voter Registration Day is September 25, th and the entire month of September is being acknowledged as National Voter Registration Month during which each of us must encourage everyone we know to register and vote in the fall. The Democratic vote in Texas and throughout the nation must be decisive, wrestling control from the Republican-controlled Congress and sending a strong message to the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Among other things,

Because of the subject, there was a particular old hymn that I asked him if he would mind leading,” McLarty said. “He didn’t say anything about not knowing the song, but he had never heard it before in his life. He came up that evening and was just smiling and excited about leading it. He told me he had never heard the song before, but that day, he called back to St. Lucia and asked his grandmother to teach him that old hymn

So he shared it with us at Lectureship that night, and it was a truly special moment.” The entire Harding family grieves today for the loss of Botham Jean, who has meant so very much to us. August 30, 2018 Councilman Philip Kingston, Far be it from me to go biblical, but I am compelled to rehearse what I heard in the one Sunday school class I attended. In the Gospel according to JOHN, chapter 8, it reads; “He who is without sin cast the first stone.â€? It has taken scriptures and a prayer to persuade me to drop my stone and keep this missive decent. The inference or outright insinuation you made to impugn the character of your Black peers was unconscionable. The fact that you inferred that the Council should appoint a White to the position of Mayor Pro-Tem, based on the lack of credible leadership in the Black community; was racist to its core. You voiced openly the sentiment that continues to be fostered publicly and privately in this country, and worst of all‌it’s a lie. In Maya Angelou’s “Yet to
be United States of America,� my skin is my sin. The sin of my hue makes me subject to conjecture, undue discrimination, and all forms of prejudices. I fight for the rights of all minorities because I live with the sight and symptoms of injustice’s painful consequences. But all of us have sinned and come short‌ As a minority, or the claim that you generally make when being White and male is not sufficient, I expect more from you. Had you come out of the closet as a Neo-Nazi or a White Nationalist, like your president, I would have known what to expect. But for someone who claims and converts their minority status to political currency, to defile a whole race and class of people, is totally unacceptable. Senators Corey Booker (D-NJ) and Kamala Harris (D_CA) used their time wisely in their questioning of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kaveaugh, the elusive man whose hidden documents would perhaps disqualify him from the court. Both (along with Senator Dianne Feinstein and others) raised important points in grilling Kavenaugh, and Booker went on a limb to defy Senate protocol and release so-called confidential emails from Kavenaugh. He earned a warning from one of his colleagues, and praise from embattled Democrats who are likely to lose the fight to keep Kavenaugh off the court because the numbers just don’t add up. Harris also pushed Kavenaugh hard, and left him speechless when she asked him if he knew of any laws “that the government has the power to make over the male body?� I whooped
when she asked the question, appreciating the point she was making. K avenaugh could not answer. He simply mumbled and fumbled. Most of the Democrats brought their “A� game to these hearings, but I’m lifting up Booker and Harris because they are examples of Black political excellence. The two are also chairing the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference, the annual September gathering of African American legislators, activists, and others. Both stand out because of their preparation, excellence, and connections to the African American community. They weren’t the only recent examples of Black political excellence. In Florida, the underfunded Andrew Gillum, the only non-millionaire in the race for governor, pulled out an unexpected victory as Democratic nominee. While he didn’t have the money that his rivals had, he had an army of amazing volunteers

who combed the state mobilizing voters. The Tallahassee mayor who backed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Presidential race was boosted by a late endorsement from Senator Bernie Sanders and critical campaign dollars from billionaires Tom Steyer and George Soros. His vic-
man Ron DeSantis, the despicable Trump supporter who won the Republican nomination, followed the example of his patron in using racially coded language against Gillum, urging voters not to “monkey up� the state. When asked about DeSantis’ ignorance in interviews,
tory was close, but it wasn’t a squeaker. And he vanquished former Congresswoman Gwen Graham, daughter of a former governor and part of a political dynasty. What has been most impressive about Gillum, though, has been his eloquence and self-possession in the wake of his victory. Congress-
Gillum asked voters and others to focus on the issues, not the racism. He appeared unruffled in these exchanges, and indicated exactly the kind of principled governor he will be. Excellence. In Boston, City Councilor Ayana Pressley defeated 10-term Congressman Michael Capuano. With no Republican opposition,
she will be the first African American woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress. Pressley also demonstrated excellence, resilience, and persistence. Ignoring advice that she should “wait her turn� before running for Congress, undeterred by the fact that many members of the Congressional Black Caucus endorsed her opponent, Pressley remained focused on her message and amassed an amazing army of volunteers to earn a stunning victory. Excellence. Stacey Abrams, the Democratic nominee for governor in Georgia is also an example of this excellence. She pulverized her opponent, Stacey Evans, back in June, and is now waging a campaign against another Trumptype opponent. Her excellence stands out and makes her a role model for other African American women who seek higher office, often against all odds. She has used her personal story to galvanize people, much in the same ways that Ayanna Pressley and Andrew Gillum have. Their stories are persuasive to voters be-

cause they assure voters that they may be able to better understand their hardships than others can. What is exciting about the Black political excellence is that it also represents a generational changing of the guard. Gillum is 39, Pressley and Abrams, in their early 40s. Booker is 49, and Harris is in her early 50s. This is quite a change from the entrenched political leadership that endorsed Pressley’s opponent. It doesn’t suggest that the entrenched generation needs to “step aside�; as some have said, but it does suggest that they will have to find ways to work together and learn from each other. The awful outcome of the 2016 election has emboldened young African Americans to seek public office, against all odds. It’s an exciting development in an otherwise gloomy political time, and it ought also be motivation for people to vote in the midterm elections! Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. Being more assertive in researching natural cures for restoration of good health a necessity By Donald Lee Hello, friends. I have long preached and written columns about good health and how important it is for us to be more assertive in committing to a physically healthier lifestyle. Scripture says in 3rd John 1:1,2 says, The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. Beloved, I wish above all things that thou may prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. Friends, as it relates to our faith walk with God, we’re prospering. We’re doing well. Yet while that is always a good thing, the other part to that is that we should be prospering in our physical bodies, as the Word points out. If we are challenged in our health, we need to eradicate those infirmities by way of the Word of God and natural resources that the Lord has placed here in the earth to help us. Ecclesiastes 1:9-12 says, The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there anything whereof it may be said, this is new? It hath been already of old time, which was before us. There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after. I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. worse. This woman spent all that she had. We’re talking about money, friends. She went to many physicians. And nary could or would heal her. But all took her money. What’s more is that not only did she not get healed, but her condition, instead, worsened. You know anybody who is struggling to pay mounting doctor bills as his (or her) health continues to deteriorate? The good news, friends, is that, like the woman with the issue of blood, people today can be made whole again. In addition to prayer, which
is the chief thing, the Lord gives us wisdom to research for ourselves the (natural) things the Lord has blessed us with here in the earth to bring about healing in our physical bodies. Much of that, too, is a change in diet and exercising. Adding more alkaline-based food to one’s diet and the elimination of acidic-based food from it get one’s body’s pH balance

Imagine being taken to the hospital in severe pain, then being dismissed without treatment or care. Now, imagine if you were a physician who was in severe pain, and you were still ignored. How would you feel? Helpless? Angry? Desperate? All of the above? Unfortunately, this isn’t a made-up scenario. It’s exactly what happened to a physician I know, who happens to live with a debilitating illness that is common, incurable, yet one we know way too little about: sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease is a lifelong, genetic blood disorder that causes the body to produce abnormally shaped red blood cells. Normal red blood cells move easily through the blood vessels and carry oxygen to all parts of the body. Sickle cells, however, are hard, sticky and tend to clump together. The cells then get stuck and literally block the flow of blood to the organs and limbs, causing pain, anemia and organ damage. Among black Americans, one in every 400 babies is born with the disease. And the incidence of the sickle cell trait, the carrier status, occurs in one in 12 live births. In the U.S., sickle cell disease affects more than 100,000 people, while globally SCD affects more than 3.5 million people. SCD is also common in Spanish-speaking countries in South America, Central
America and parts of the Caribbean. Because of the nature of SCD as a chronic illness, the burden of care can be tremendous on families and communities. The most common reason that people with SCD seek medical care and acute care services is that they frequently suffer from sickle cell crisis pain episodes. In fact, patients with SCD utilize more emergency department services than patients with other more common chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma and hypertension. This sudden, severe, acute pain is also the primary cause of distrust between the medical health system and those living with SCD. It is ingrained in trained medical professionals to seek objective reasons related to patient symptoms and disease processes. Unfortunately there are no known tests or procedures that can definitively show whether an actual SCD pain crisis is occurring or not. That is why, when people engage the medical system, they are often given erroneous explanations for delays and subpar care such as “your blood counts look good, you can’t be having pain” or “we are waiting for your test results before we can give you any treatment” or “we can’t give any opioid medications for sickle pain,” which only leads to prolonged suffering of the person in pain. My friend’s experience was all too common. After being released without treatment the first time she went to the hospital, she returned a few days later. She was fatigued and was struggling to breathe, but she wasn’t given any IV fluids, antibiotics or pain medications even though she was in pain with each breath. Fortunately, she had an advocate with her at the hospital who demanded the attention of her physicians — but not before she ended up in the intensive care unit with acute chest syndrome. Acute chest syndrome is one of several serious life-threatening complications of SCD, and it needs rapid treatment to prevent fatal outcomes. My friend was blessed someone advocated on her behalf to save her life. Unfortunately these episodes occur too frequently with many people succumbing to the complications — not the disease itself. As my friend told me, “I’ve had two near death experiences, not because of my sickle cell disease but because as a patient I was never acknowledged.” As providers we must do better. We need to remain empathetic and engaged to serve our patients as humanely as possible, recognizing there is very limited ammunition to fight debilitating pain. Here’s a tidbit of information explaining what “pH balance,” “alkaline” and “acidic” mean to you: “The pH level measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is on a sale of 0 to 14. For example, something with a pH of 1 would be very acidic, and something with a pH of 13 would be very alkaline,” an article written at http://www.flowhydration.com states. “Flow alkaline spring water (pH 8.1) has a higher pH level than tap water, which typically has a neutral pH of 7,” the article says. “Alkalinity helps buffer acidity …” When people are sick, they’re pH level is well below 7. When they’re healthy, their pH balance is above 7. On the pH scale, 7 is neutral. Your health depends on you understanding this and making adjustments in your diet where needed. A lot of times, when it comes to health scares, we don’t know what to do. One thing I believe in is people being more assertive about researching for themselves what alternative medicine has to offer. At the end of the day, it’s your health, not the physicians’, that’s in jeopardy. Mavs announce 2018 Preseason/ Regular Schedule By Dorothy J Gentry Sports Editor The Dallas Mavericks are back. The franchise recently released it’s pre-season and regular schedule for the 2018-19 season. They kick off the pre-season with a game against the Beijing Ducks, Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at American Airlines Center against the Beijing Ducks. The Mavs will play two home games at the AAC during the pre-season and two games abroad in China against the Philadelphia 76ers. Dallas will land in Shanghai on Tuesday, Oct. 2 and practice on Wednesday and Thursday before taking on the 76ers at Mercedes-Benz Arena on Friday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 am (Dallas time). Both the Mavericks and 76ers will then travel to Shenzhen, China to play the second and final international exhibition game at Shenzhen Universiade Center on Monday, Oct. 8 at 7 a.m. CST NBA-TV will broadcast both games in China. The Charlotte Hornets come to Dallas on Oct. 12 to close out the Mavs pre-season schedule. Both Mavericks home games will be locally televised. FOX Sports Southwest PLUS will air the home game against Beijing (Sept. 29) while FOX Sports Southwest will televise the preseason finale against Charlotte (Oct. 12). All of the preseason games can be heard on ESPN 103.3 FM. The Mavericks’ 2018-19 season – its 39th season as a franchise and 18th playing at American Airlines -begins on Wednesday, Oct. 17th on the road against the Phoenix Suns at 9:30 p.m. CST on ESPN. Dallas will host its home season-opener on Oct. 20 when Karl Anthony Towns and the Minnesota Timberwolves come to town. The Mavericks’ national TV schedule includes two games on ESPN and three games on TNT. TNT will have the exclusive rights to new Maverick DeAndre Jordan’s return to Los Angeles when Dallas plays the L.A. Clippers on Dec. 20. This season the Mavericks will play a balanced home-away schedule in 2018-19 with its longest home stand being three games (four times) and its longest road trip just four games (twice). Can I trust two teens alone? Dear Alma,
I’m friends with my next door neighbor. She’s not my BFF, but we hang from time to time. Her husband is in the military and she doesn’t have family in the area. She and I have a lot in common — we’re around the same age and like the same things. She has a son, and I have a daughter. The kids both go to the same high school. Yesterday my neighbor stopped by to tell me they are moving. Her husband has been transferred to another state. She asked me if I would let her 17-year-old son live with us while he finished his last year of school here in our town. She said they would pay room and board for him. I’m not married, and I’m not sure how it would be with a teen boy in my house. What do you think? Name withheld Dear Name Withheld, Good googalie woogalie, my Mama use to say. That’s a whole lot of turkey, greens, potatoes and gravy served up on your fine china. Hmmm, let’s ponder, should you try to eat all of it, fork-full by spoon-full or just push yourself away from the table without a bite? Listen to your stomach. Do you have an appetite for this? Yes, it’s a risky situation, we both would agree. I don’t know this young man, and since you didn’t speak of his personality or character, this leaves me to assume. I’m going with a positive approach, concluding he’s a pretty good kid. Here’s what I’d suggest, make a list. Yep, write down the pros and cons of this possible yearlong endeavor. Identify every thought that comes to mind — what you expect and what scares you the most. I’d say work on this for more than a couple of days. You need to be prayerfully on your knees for at least a week. You also have to consider your daughter. This would be life-changing for her as well. All three adults need to sit down at the table hashing out the good, bad and the ugly. Thoroughly examine what room and board will cover. Obviously rent and utilities, but what about food? Boys his age can eat you out of house and home. This I know for sure. Will he stay with you during the week and go home on the weekends? What about extracurricular activities? Are you responsible for getting him there, or does he have a car? Does he have a girlfriend? Are you friends with him, or does he see you as an authoritative adult? Like I said, we’re talking a full plate here. It could be a sacrifice and or a blessing to all involved. Taking in this teen doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It’s only temporary, and he has parents. Many teens who were taken in by outside adults have gone on to do great things. One example is Michael Oher, the professional football player whose story inspired the movie “The Blind Side.” Remember? He was cared for by a family so he could finish high school. If you like this young man and wouldn’t mind him living in your home, tell his parents you’re willing to give it a try for the first semester — that’s three months. If things seem to work out, commit to the next semester. That way, he knows he has to follow the rules and live up to your and his parents’ expectations. This is a huge responsibility, and the answer to the question of “will this work” is up to him. I salute you, single mama. You must be holding it down. Otherwise, his parents wouldn’t have asked. In the same vain, you are not obligated. If you don’t want to, don’t do it, and don’t feel badly about it. Tell his parents it just wouldn’t work for you and your daughter right now. Best wishes and blessings to you while you pray on your decision, whatever you decide is the right thing to do. No excuses or explanations! One beautiful Sunday morning I was scheduled to do a live broadcast in Fort Worth at Jim Austin’s Event Center. I was a little apprehensive because I was expecting a phone interview for a portion of the show and the board operator back in the studio felt I was a little too demanding because I asked questions and double-checked details. The clock is ticking. We’re live. The theme music begins playing and after you hear the words, “don’t believe the hype,” you hear my voice. I did my opening and then after a commercial break, I came back and prepared the audience for my special guest. I was holding my breath in anticipation as I greeted my guest. “Hello Ms. Franklin,” I said. She spoke back and I began the conversation. Much to my chagrin, there were “technical difficulties” so I told her to let us try reconnecting. We tried about two more times. The last time, the Queen hung up the phone, never to be heard from again. Now I finished the show but I was not happy. Even today I “shake my head” thinking about it. Earlier this year, Eva Coleman introduced me to the Queen’s sister-inlaw, Earline. We bonded because she

was such a loving person, and also because my mother’s name is Earline. I thought about that radio show then and again this summer when we were back in Detroit for the NABJ convention and Ms. Earline spent time with us. And while years ago I apologized to the person who set up the interview, I would have loved to apologize to the Queen in person but I knew it wasn’t possible. It was a very delicate time. Nothing sweet about Peppermint Peppermint is a new action film starring Jennifer Garner as a mom who is hell-bent on revenge after drug dealers kill her husband and daughter. She's also wounded in the drive-by attack but she recovers and is able to identify the three killers who murdered her family. However, the drug
dealers make payoffs to everyone involved in the case, from the D.A. to the judge. So, when she's unable to get justice through the system, she decides to get it on her own. She spends five years "off the grid" and then returns having learned martial arts
and undergone weapons training. Living out of a van on skid row she goes after everyone involved in her family’s murder and starts to leave a body count of drug dealers and crooked officials. The movie also has a few surprise plot twists that will leave you guessing which of
the law enforcement officials is an informant for the drug lord. The plot will keep you on your toes. And Jennifer Garner is about as subtle as a momma bear in her dealings with the crooked officials and drug dealers. Peppermint is rated R for
gratuitous violence and has a run time of 1 hour and 42 minutes. However, it is an enjoyable, heart-pounding thrill ride that I think you will like. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate Peppermint a JUMBO.
