Lyons Foundation hosts event honoring veterans Despite threat of rain, hundreds turn out in Garland
It was fun for all with numbers approaching 200 community members in attendance as the Lyons Foundation kicked off it's 7th Annual Memorial Day Event, "Celebrating Our Communities and Having a Moment of Silence Honoring our Military Heroes." The excitement began as the crowd assembled at the Embree Park, located behind the Gayle Fields Recreation Center in Garland , Texas. There were spiritual songs as well as personal testimonies, including Praises to God, performed by the guest group. The lighting of the BBQ grills took place as the food and drinks that were

It was a big night at the 40th annual Gracie Awards with actress Tracee Ellis Ross as the host and actress Cicely Tyson receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, while other honorees included Iyanla VanZant, actress Julia Roberts, talk show host Robin Roberts and Isha Sesay for Outstanding Anchor-News or News Magazine CNN. But the highlight for Floridians, Florida A&M University alumni, students and friends, as well as media mogul Tyler Perry’s fans, was the honor bestowed upon Angela Robinson - Outstanding Female Actor- One to Watch OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network/The Haves and The Have Nots.
A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Robinson attended Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fl., where she also reigned as Miss FAMU. Following her graduation from FAMU, where she actually had another successful actress -T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh of In Living Color and That’s So Raven fame, as a roommate; the multi-talented singer, actress and dancer began her professional acting career appearing in Broadway and Off-Broadway productions and performing in several popular shows, including The Color Purple, Dreamgirls and The Wizard of Oz. She has also appeared on an episode of episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

METRO Garland Fire Department hosts hiring process seminar Garland Fire Department will host a public seminar to help prospective employees navigate the testing and hiring process involved in becoming a Garland firefighter. The seminar will be held on Thursday, June 25th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Garland Fire Department Administration building which is located at 1500 Hwy 66 in Garland. Those attending the seminar will learn about the employment opportunities within Garland Fire Department, the requirements needed to become a Garland firefighter and how to navigate the hiring process. The entrance exam is scheduled for Thursday, September 17. Online applications will be accepted from Friday, August 14th through Friday, August 28th at 5:00 pm. West Nile Virus in Dallas County Commissioners Court. “West Nile season is underway and DCHHS is doing its part to protect Dallas County residents,” said Thompson. “It is very important for Dallas County residents to know what they can do to minimize mosquito exposure.” DCHHS purchased more than 10,000 mosquito dunks and issued the supply to municipalities throughout Dallas County. The dunks will be used to treat standing water and help control the mosquito population. DCHHS issued a West Nile Virus health advisory to Dallas area medical providers and laboratory staff, and also continues to issue weekly surveillance reports. Additionally, DCHHS informed the court the department remains in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Vector-Borne Diseases to share and analyze Dallas County mosquito pool data. DCHHS urges citizens to do their part as well to help control the mosquito population. “Dallas County has experienced a record amount of rain, which in turn increases breeding sites for mosquitoes,” said Dr. Perkins. “If residents are unable to drain standing water, they should use larvicide products, such as mosquito dunks, to prevent mosquito larvae from maturing.” So far this season, five mosquito traps have tested positive for West Nile Virus. No human cases have been reported.
Summer Nutrition Program The Garland Fair Housing Department is proud to announce the 2015 Summer Nutrition Program, which is celebrating 20 years of providing free, nutritious meals to children throughout the

This year’s program will run June 8-Aug. 7 at various locations throughout Garland and three locations in Rowlett. The program is for children ages 1-18, and no registration is required. JTS Convocation honors Rabbis for over 25 years of dedicated service Honorary doctorates were awarded to 40 rabbis—all members of the Rabbinical Assembly (RA) who have served the Jewish community with distinction for 25 years or more—by The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) at a convocation on Wednesday, April 29. Through the degrees conferred, JTS celebrated the achievements of important spiritual leaders and expressed appreciation for their manifold contributions to Jewish life. The ceremony took place at the JTS campus in New York City. Professor Arnold M. Eisen, chancellor of JTS, conferred the degrees and delivered the convocation address. Rabbi Daniel S. Nevins, dean of the Division of Religious Leadership and Pearl Resnick Dean of The Rabbinical School, and Barry Lovell, chair of The Religious Leadership Advisory Board of JTS, sponsored the honorees. Honoree Rabbi William Gershon, president of the Rabbinical Assembly, delivered greetings on behalf of the RA. Honoree Rabbi Harold J. Kravitz, the spiritual leader of Adath Jeshurun Congregation in Minnetonka, Minnesota, gave remarks on behalf of those being honored. The rabbis receiving this distinction included congregational rabbis, Jewish communal professionals, educators, and chaplains from across the United States as well as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, and England. Half a century of Head Start
“Project Head Start” was launched by President Lyndon B. Johnson on May 18, 1965. Originally designed as an eight week summer demonstration project, Head Start has expanded into an array of preschool programs that provide children from low-income families with a comprehensive program that prepares them for successful entry into kindergarten, and illuminates the pathway towards a brighter future. Educational experts view Head Start as our nation’s most comprehensive and effective program that prepares children for school. With the participation of parents, Head Start includes education, nutrition and health services for children from impoverished backgrounds and their families. In the past 50 years, approximately 25 million of our nation’s children have benefited as participants in Head Start environments. Nearly 72,000 children and their families were beneficiaries of Head Start programs in 2014. I am pleased that 4,068 of those who were served reside in the 30th Congressional District of Texas, which I am honored to serve. Head Start is instrumental in uplifting families in Texas and throughout our nation, providing them with resources that allow children to reach their full potential. Educators and social scientists alike believe that participants in Head Start are more likely to earn their high school diplomas, continue on to college and become selfreliant wage earners than are those who do not have the early childhood development experience that the program affords. This success is possible because of the access to services that Head Start provides to children. It is extremely important that during this critical period in our nation’s history, we increase our support and expand the Head Start program. Every child in America should be afforded an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of their race or their socio-economic background. President Obama recently called on all Americans, including leaders of private and philanthropic organizations, as well as leaders on the city, state and county levels, to make earnest investments in our next generation of thinkers, dreamers and doers. The development of young people today ensures our democracy in the future. We cannot afford not to act. We can help hardworking, low-income families build pathways that lead them and their children out of poverty. With our assistance they can become members of the middle class. If our society is serious about giving children brighter futures, we must increase our investment in Head Start programs so that more children can participate. Now is the time to expand upon the vision of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and the “Great Society” programs that resulted in the creation of Head Start. We must close the opportunity gap that so many children in our country unfairly face. We must give them a chance to succeed. It is in their best interest and in the larger society’s best interest as well.

2015: Another Summer Another school year comes to an end, at least for those in America. A time to chill. It’s like rap group Public Enemy says, “another summer.� Well, sadly just like in 1989, the year that Chuck D spoke of, in 2014, 25 years later; it was a violent summer -- one we shouldn’t want to repeat in 2015. Many educators are exhaling and ready to enjoy a few months of relaxation; while unfortunately others are gearing up for a second tour of duty. That’s right, a summer job. The salary they bring home is just not enough to sustain their lifestyle without some form of subsidizing. Then there are the youth. It would be great to say that every child of a certain age would have some program or opportunity to keep them busy and not left to their own devices or wild, inquisitive imaginations. Whether they are working at a McDonald’s under the watchful eye of a mentor like businessman Roland Parrish, or participating in programs at places like the South Dallas Cultural Center, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, The Black Academy of Arts and Letters, Heads Up! Foundation or one of the many Boys or Girls Clubs; our communities would be so much better. For some this will be a summer of growth and development, of fun and memories to cherish a lifetime. Some young people are fortunate that plans are made for them. Some will be visiting relatives, going away to camp or studying abroad. Plans were made 60 years ago for Emmett Louis Till when his mother, like so many parents living in big cities would do, sent him south from Chicago to visit relatives in Money, Mississippi. Unfortunately she never saw her son again. He was brutally beaten and murdered by men who said that he whistled at a white woman. His was a story no parents wants to tell. But more and more often, the stories are being told about the brutal deaths of young people. How about a moratorium this summer, that extends for eternity? Violence can’t and should not be the answer. Answers have to come by investing in our young. Have you made an investment yet?

How can you tell when a politician is lying? When he moves his lips.

Though originally intended as a joke, the number of candidates who have declared as for president have already ushered in a cascade of lies – and the situation will only grow worse as more climb aboard. Fortunately, there are at least two nonpartisan fact-checking groups that try to hold politicians accountable for their less than accurate assertions. One is FactCheck.org, a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania that describes itself as “a nonpartisan, nonprofit “consumer advocate� for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics.� The second is Politifact. com operated by the Tampa Bay Times. The 2016 political season is just opening, but as each candidate opens his or her mouth, what’s leaving their lips is frequently false. Here are a few examples:

I went directly to your FB page the other day. I did a double take and looked again, but I still can’t tell what’s up with you by looking at your FB page. How is it that a gizmo of technological grandeur can be reduced to a gossip spot and housing a bunch of fake pictures? I mean how needy and unsecure do you have to be to change your homemade glamour shots daily? It doesn’t matter how much you rearrange that weave and slap on them extended length lashes… you look like that old chick in the club. You don’t want to be known as “THOT.” And bruh; you keep posting
new selfies donning them designer knockoff shades, gangster leaning in that raggedy assed truck. We can tell that you ain’t matured a bit since you graduated high school or pledged that damn fraternity. I assume since I see you on FB that your children are all safe and well. Support payments up to date and you enjoy them on the regular? You have to forgive me; I’m FB deficient because there’s so much going on. Did you realize that while you were repackaging America’s funniest videos from six years ago, the Dallas Independent School District is in a mess? Jim Mitchell, whose acts as the ultrta-Conservative brother on the Dallas Morning News editorial board, had a helluva headline last week. “STAAR results; Another lost generation of Dallas students is in the pipeline.” The same paper that once defended DISD Superintendent Mike Miles has had to admit that four years of declining test scores is
getting scary. And while y’all was stylin’ and profilin’ on FakeBook, the Mayor and three of your soon to be ex-Negro councilpersons (Thank God) were adamant that Miles should remain. Somebody posted a heinous denial of justice in your backyard, but you didn’t read it. Mothers Against Police Brutality uses Facebook to keep you informed. Here is the MAPB press release from last week that I bet you didn’t read. “MAPB expected that Arlington Police Officer Thedrick Andres would not be indicted in the death of Juan May last June, after the two had fought on a party bus in Duncanville (at Pappadeaux Restaurant). Shortly after Juan’s death, we met with Assistant Chief Jaime Ayala to make sure Andres was taken off patrol and his weapon taken from him. Andres was off duty, not in uniform, when he physically fought with May after a dispute on

a party bus. Andres left the bus, went to his car, retrieved his police weapon, and shot May to death the night of June 22, 2014. “Thedrick Andres killed Juan May as a private citizen, not in any official capacity. But he was treated by Duncanville officers differently than any private citizen suspected of homicide would have been treated. He was not arraigned, not taken to jail, not given a drug or alcohol test.” I got a deal. Play on Facebook everyday and then let’s all promise to go to a protest or just meet somewhere once a month to do a good deed for some soul that could never repay us. That way I won’t complain and maybe, like in the 50’s and 60’s, some of these injustices will begin to subside. Being truthful and real (Trill) we need 140 characters in the streets and not just in tweets. Talk is cheap and we got too much of our lives invested in Facebook and Twitter.

If you are disposed to using the Internet as your guide, a diploma
will generally be described as the proof of your successful completion of a course of study, or the bestowal of an academic degree. Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that diploma in your grasp, occupying a prominent space on a wall or waiting to be pressed into your eager hand is so much more than the sum of your years-long efforts to be where you are today. Your degree is a key that opens a new door, a new phase of life and a new set of challenges. Your life’s journey – and its achievements – does not end here. Celebrate, because you’ve earned it; bask in your well-earned feeling of accomplishment today, because tomorrow you will find that there is much work to be done. On the other side of that new door
is a staircase, and that staircase may not be the kind fashioned from crystal with smooth, reliable, clearcut steps. Obstacles may slow or impede your climb. There may be tacks, broken floorboards and torn up carpet that would trip, or at worst, defeat someone without the training you have been so fortunate to attain. There is no shortcut here, no elevator, or bypassing of these difficult steps and turns. There is, however, the choice to apply the perseverance and commitment to excellence you have already shown in your higher education journey. On the one hand, there is much to celebrate in our country when it comes to academic achievement in African-American communities. Today, we enjoy the highest high school graduation rates in history. More students of color are in college and dropout rates are at historic lows. But the wealth and unemployment gap between Blacks and Whites remains wide. While the Black unemployment rate has finally dipped into the single digits, it stubbornly remains more than twice as high as the jobless rate for Whites. As our country’s economy continues to make steady
gains after the debilitating 2008 recession, millions in Black and Brown communities are being left behind. In this country— founded largely on the principle of economic progress through hard work—the American dream of upward mobility remains only a dream for too many of its citizens. Whether your ancestors came here by plane, by train, by ship or shackled underneath the hull of a ship; whether the continent they called home was Asia, Europe or Africa, what they did when they
reached the shores of our nation, what they sacrificed—all of it is debt incurred. How will you choose to compensate them for their struggles? Among you are the teachers who will lift the standard of education in poor communities and begin to close the achievement gap; among you are the preachers who will heal the wounds of communities torn apart by violence; among you are the elected officials who will institute laws and policies that promote social and economic fairness for all of America’s citizens. Herein lies the answer. The answer our nation has been searching for is you and your talent, put to a higher purpose. I cannot promise you that your climb to success in this life will be a crystal stair. You may very well encounter dark corners and obstacles. What I can promise you is that you have been prepared to meet these challenges head on. And more than meet these challenges, you have also been prepared to be an actor in solving so many of the longstanding issues and inequities facing our nation, so “don’t you turn back.”

Chambers Lecture series, named after the former MLK Advisory Board member who passed away in April 2015. Dr. Jerry B. 1956 -2015 Southern Soul and Blues star Mel Waiters was born and raised in San Antonio, TX, where in 1974 he began his performing career at local teen clubs; after a stint as a radio DJ, he was awarded a government contract to entertain at military bases across the Southwest. With the exception of sax Waiters produced, played and wrote all the material for his first CD release in 1996. The slick “Hit It & Quit It” and “Whatever It Took” gave him his first Southern hits. He followed this up with his second for the Serious Sounds with “Suki Suki Man” that got his biggest song to date with the title track. Waiters was next snatched up by Malaco Records’s Waldoxy imprint in 1997 and an even bigger hit was produced by the single “Got My Whiskey” featuring a very
polished dance sound he would continue with. Despite increasing popularity up to this point in 1999 he jumped to the top of the Soul/Blues heap with the smash “Hole In The Wall,” one of those undeniable hits that
guarantee you’ll work in the Chitlin Circuit for years to come. The single, which also featured a remix by Bigg Robb, managed to hit Billboard’s Hot Dance Music/MaxiSingles Sales chart at #24 and also gave Waiters his first placing on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums chart (#5) and the Top R & B/Hip Hop Albums chart at #83. Since that time Waiters has scored with a string of similar sounding dance songs about drinking whiskey and partying at the “hole in the wall.” His most recent disc, “Throwback Days,” dented Billboard Top 100 R & B/Hip Hop Albums chart at #93 proving longevity for the artist. Waiters also ran his own label, Britney Records, for a time and his roster includes legend Lattimore. Waiters died on May 28, 2015

The Lyons Foundation Giveaway Program this year included three bikes, books donated from Half Price Books, a digital camera donated by the guest Historian, Tommy Briggs, and slightly used adult clothing, which had everyone smiling and cheering as numbers were called from the raffle tickets obtained upon entrance to the celebration. This year was the very first time the historian was available to research the family trees of attendees. Keeping in touch with the past, present and the future of Garland families was exciting and important, according to many of the first 40 community members who participated in the event. Garland Fire and Rescue was on the scene as they have been numerous years, educating community youth on the procedures to enhance their daily Lives. Firemen demonstrated life saving CPR techniques while allowing the youth to board the engine and familiarize themselves with the equipment. As the Memorial Day Event winded down, speakers closed out the program by taking to the microphone to thanking the community for showing up in spite of the rain. As the clouds begin to darken the skies once again, everyone gathered under the nearest shelter and closed the event singing Happy Birthday to this year’s honoree, Theodis Lyons, President and Founder of the Lyons Foundation.

Over the course of my lifetime, I have known many who p3 served in the military, including my father, my Godfather, several uncles and friends. I remember as a child Page 3 hearing whisperings about quite a few young men who were never quite “right” when they returned from serving in Vietnam and I hadn’t a clue what they were talking about. Unfortunately so many who were fortunate to return home dealt with, or continue to live with not only physical, but mental issues. And it doesn’t help when they have problems with housing, employment or basic services that many would think would be automatic. And in the past year, I’ve spent even more time around some champions of veterans Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and businessmen Gary Hasty and Ed Spears. Congresswoman Johnson was the Chief Psychiatric Nurse at the V.A. Hospital in Dallas. In 1972, she became the first nurse ever elected to the Texas State House; and eventually, the first nurse ever elected to the Texas State Senate and the United States Congress. Her interest in and support of veteran affairs is welldocumented. Both Mr. Hasty and Mr. Spears are changing the lives of veterans coming home, because they are dealing with a major issue veterans face, housing. Last year they opened the multi-unit Heroes House in East Dallas and I love visiting with the veterans there. They are so happy to have a place they call home and to be around people who show love and appreciation to them. And the good news is that there will be more dwellings in the future. Actually this Memorial Day, I was over at Heroe’s House serving our veterans. Now I read on Facebook where there are folk who want to give a lesson to the unenlightened, explaining that Memorial Day is to recognize those who died for the country and Veteran’s Day is for those who living or dead, served our country. Yes, I’m shaking my head. As far as I am concerned, we always find a way to major in the minors. While I salute the men and women who served and died, there’s nothing I can do for them now. But, I can serve and show love to those men and women who are among us. I say a heartfelt thanks to those who served and continue to serve. And those who are beneficiaries could show some compassion, home training and discipline when it comes to the treatment of the men and women serving our country.

Dear Alma: I have a nice majority of friends. However, I hang out mostly with my cousin. I am a year older; she is 18. With this being said, she has friends that are in her group range and vice versa. All my friends left for college while I stayed my first two years at home to save money. While being full-time at work and school, I still have leisure time. I find myself isolated because my cousin periodically hangs out with her set of friends more. I believe that’s because they seem to be more on her level and I don’t do half of the things they do. All this is fine. I just find myself bored on most occasions because I basically don’t have any friends to hang out with. There’s more to life than just empty hanging. You’re mission should be to hang out with a purpose. Pour into yourself a hobby or activity that reaps the benefits of attaining a personal goal. Something that engages you and causes you to lose track of time. You’ll meet new friends and a variety of great people who share the same interest. Get started now, today. Write down every activity you’ve ever dreamed of trying, regardless of location, destination, cost or going at it alone. My advice, young heart – run free, be brave, be bold, you can do it.
