Faith Johnson named Dallas County District Attorney
After several months of speculation, Dallas County has a new District Attorney. On Tuesday, Governor Greg Abbott announced the appointment of Faith Johnson as the Dallas County District Attorney for a term set to expire December 31, 2018, or until a successor shall be duly elected and qualified. This appointment makes Johnson only the second African American and second woman to hold the post. “Throughout her career, Faith has proven herself a dedicated public servant, most notably as a criminal prosecutor where she attained the status of Chief Felony Prosecutor during her time in the Dallas County District Attorney's Office, said Governor Abbott. “As a former prosecutor, district judge, and while serving on the Department of Public Safety Commission, Faith has shown a commitment to law enforcement and the rule of law. She has devoted herself to defending some of our most vulnerable Texans, and I am confident that in her new role as District Attorney, Faith will continue to fight for the people of Dallas County and ensure that justice is served. Elected officials, organizations and community leaders offered

Stop thieves from stealing identities, bank cards and the joy of the holidays
How they skim your money
How to stop the scam Alvarado is sounding the alarm about bogus card readers and other devices that capture and encrypt information. “Identity thieves are going to be with us, unfortunately,” Alvarado said. “You just have to be aware and take steps to avoid being a victim.” Identity theft is a crime, and scams are often difficult to detect. Alvarado warns that the holidays bring an increased chance of identity theft. Thieves are happy about the season because it increases the chances they can prowl successfully. First, Alvarado recommends using chip-en-
abled cards because they add a greater level of security and are difficult to duplicate. Next, he suggests using prepaid debit cards. Also, people who suspect their information may have been compromised should immediately contact their banks. Finally, victims also should report crimes to the Federal Trade Commission, the agency charged with protecting consumers. Annually, identity theft costs consumers more than $24 billion, according to Bureau of Justice statistics, including costs directly associated with identity theft such as bounced checks, plus fraudulent use of bank and credit accounts. These crimes run the gammut from false loan and credit card applications to the purchase of goods and services under someone else’s name.

How to handle tax season, too After the holidays comes tax season. Thieves already are plotting to steal identities and collect someone else’s tax refund, according to federal officials. “We certainly understand if the latest IRS imposter scam makes you queasy,” said Seena Gressin, an attorney for the FTC’s Consumer and Business Education division. “That one involves a fake IRS tax notice that claims you owe money as a result of the Affordable Care Act. It’s one of the many imposters’ scams that have popped up. As tax season nears, we’ll see more.” The agency has issued alerts warning consumers to be on the lookout for unauthorized withdrawals. They also warn about telephone calls about debts that consumers don’t actually owe.

Cybercrimes have evolved right alongside digital technology, said Alvarado. Thieves are lifting critical information from consumers and using it to apply for credit or to cash fraudulent checks. He explained, “They use skimmers. You’re giving away your information, and you don’t even know it.” The skimmers are hidden devices that are installed on ATM machines, on gas pumps and inside stores. “They use undetected cameras to copy bank information, including passwords. And the devices can be purchased anonymously,” he added. Skimmers can glean enough information to make duplicate credit cards. Cyber crooks also use them to send false applications for loans or credit cards; make bank withdrawals; and purchase goods and services. “All of the electronics are in there (the skimmer), and it holds on to your information. Your transaction goes through, but there’s an extra reader that picks up your card number and the pin,” Alvarado said. “So they’ve got you. It’s like a pin reader.”

Free STEAM Movie at the Library: Ice Princess
Christmas is the time for shopping, family and, unfortunately, scammers – clever thieves who specialize in exploiting others by stealing their personal banking information and walking away with new identities and someone else’s money. “The holidays are so busy. You’re not thinking much. You’ve got a dozen presents, and you have kids with you. There’s just too much going on,” said Jason Alvarado, lead faculty for the digital forensics program at Richland College. Thieves are setting traps with the use of skimmers or card readers at all places where consumers swipe their credit and debit cards. Most consumers assume they are safe at bank ATMS but they aren’t, Alvarado said. “Sometimes thieves will hide a camera that looks like a security camera, so you think you’re secure – and you’re not,” he said. “If something looks out of place, it probably is. Go to another bank or retailer.”
Celebrate the Holidays at the Branding Iron
Princess, will be shown at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at the South Garland Branch Library, 4845 Broadway Blvd. Doors open 15 minutes prior to the film and seating is limited. No registration is required. Free popcorn and water are available while supplies last. Learn more about the Nicholson Memorial Library's STEAM movie times by calling 972-205-3933.
More tips for consumers include: 1. Shop retailers that use the chip reader. When you put in your pin, it encrypts the credit card information, adding another layer of protection. 2. If your information is stolen, immediately contact your bank or credit card provider. Check cards vigilantly for unfamiliar charges. Freeze cards if you detect fraudulent activity. 3. Try to stick to one card and track your purchases. 4. Shred documents that include social security and credit card numbers 5. Check your WIFI connection to make sure it’s secure. 6. Contact the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov for a free credit report. To file a complaint, call 1-877-FTC-HELP (382-4357).

Injuries Curtail Mavs Season By Dorothy Gentry The Garland Journal
The Dallas Mavericks – only five years removed from their NBA Championship in 20111 – are 3-15 and record-wise, the worst team in the NBA. And it’s all due to one-word – injuries. The injury-ravaged Mavericks have rolled out at least 12 different starting lineups in this short period since the season began. And it’s not looking any better. Head Coach Rick Carlisle announced today that Dirk Nowitzki, the face of the franchise, is “out indefinitely” as he battles an Achilles injury. Nowitzki has played in only five games this season as he continues to undergo rehabilitation for a strained right Achilles. As if adding insult to injury, the team is also now without the services of Seth Curry (right knee strain) who went down in the 4th quarter of Wednesday’s loss at home to San Antonio. Prior to the injury, Curry was on fire with 14 points, 2 rebounds and one steal in the game. Curry. Dirk Nowitzki. J.J. Barea. Devin Harris. Deron Williams. Injuries. J.J. HALL: While on Others Thou Art Calling! Quit Playin’ by Vincent L. Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award winning columnist.
If you have roots in the African American church or its musical litany, the tag line to this shessay (short essay), is obvious. But just in case you’re Afro-Centrically challenged, let me tether the tag to this thesis or treatise. In the old Black church, amidst the rhythmic foot-pats on wooden floors and pianos that usually needed tuning; “Do not pass me by was a very familiar hymn. “Pass me not, oh gentle Savior, Hear my humble cry. If Mitt Romney and Donald Trump can share a candlelit, televised repast, you can certainly advance this act of comity and Christianity. Vincent L. MORIAL: A Legend Loved and Loathed “We know that this moment fills Cubans - in Cuba and in the United States - with powerful emotions, recalling the countless ways in which Fidel Castro altered the course of individual lives, families, and of the Cuban nation. History will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him. — President Barack Obama, Statement on the Passing of Fidel Castro, November 26, 2016
Since the announcement of his death, the significance and impact of Fidel Castro’s legacy has been subjected to heated and polarized debate. Castro’s admirers will rightly point to his unprecedented reforms in healthcare and education on the island-nation of Cuba— nearly eradicating illiteracy and reaching record lows in infant and maternal mortality rates—as the work of a leader devoted to the well-being of his people. His detractors will rightly point to his denial of basic political freedoms and human rights abuses—including suppressing free speech and the torture and executions of political opponents—as the work of a ruthless dictator concerned only with power and its preservation.
Whether history will ultimately absolve or condemn this man, it is clear that Castro was a By Marc Morial towering figure of the President/CEO 20th century. National Urban His place in the pagLeagues es of history is secured and his political and social justice influence in Cuba, the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa and beyond, can neither be denied nor—for better or worse— forgotten. The course of Cuban and world history changed forever in 1959 as Castro, thronged by rebel fighters and cheered on by the Cuban people, rode into Havana after overthrowing the brutal military dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. During his 49-year reign, Castro oversaw dramatic changes in Cuban society. With his revolution came important accomplishments and advances in racial equality, housing, education and healthcare for Cubans—but the revolution did not stop at Cuba’s borders. Castro exported his revolution and Cuba’s material and intellectual resources to other parts of the world—injecting itself
into the world’s disasters, emergencies and conflicts. Shortly following his release after 27 years spent in jail as a political prisoner, Nelson Mandela made a trip to Havana to express his gratitude to Castro. Cuba under Castro opposed apartheid and supported the African National Congress, Mandela’s political organization. Cuba was the only country in the world to send soldiers to fight in the anti-apartheid struggle. In stark contrast, the United States supported the South African apartheid government, placing Nelson Mandela and the ANC on a terrorist watch list until 2008; refused to impose sanctions on the apartheid regime; and in 1986, President Reagan vetoed the Anti-Apartheid Act. At the time, I was a leader in New Orleans of the Free South Africa movement that advocated for comprehensive economic sanctions and succeeded in lobbying Congress to override President Reagan’s veto. It is no wonder that Mandela described

Castro’s revolution as “a source of inspiration to all freedom-loving people. Cuba was an ally in many African independence movements and, despite its country’s poverty and U.S. backed sanctions, managed to provide resources, including doctors and teachers, to poor countries in need. Castro’s revolution also failed in many respects. His strides in social policy were woefully unmatched in the political arena. Erika Guevara-Rosas, Americas director at Amnesty International, described Castro as “a progressive but deeply flawed leader. Human rights were trampled under his leadership. Early-revolution promises of free elections were never kept; free speech was, and continues to be, suppressed; political opponents were executed; and thousands were jailed or forced into exile. Castro erased illiteracy and tuberculosis in Cuba—an unattainable feat in better-resourced nations. But, Castro summarily denied the people of Cuba their basic political and human rights. That is the paradox of Fidel Castro—a paradox that can, and will, teach us all valuable lessons for decades to come. Marc Morial is - Entrepreneur. Lawyer. Professor. Legislator. Mayor. JACKSON: Why Mainstream Media loves NBA Legend Marv Albert and hates Bill Cosby MY PERSPECTIVE by Raynard Jackson (NNPA News Wire Columnist)
Last week, I was watching some NBA games on TNT and one of the game’s announcers was famed broadcaster Marv Albert. He is considered by many to be one of the top announcers in all of sports history. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 2014, and the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2015. Some refer to him as “The Voice of Basketball. He is the same broadcaster that was accused of forcible sodomy and pled guilty to a lesser charge of misdemeanor assault and battery in 1997. Albert was given a 12-month suspended sentence.

NBC subsequently fired Albert only to bring him back on the air after less than two years. Now juxtapose Albert’s situation with the case of legendary civil rights activist, TV star, comedian extraordinaire, and incomparable philanthropist, Bill Cosby. Several women have come forward to accuse Cosby of drugging and raping them, but these accusers have provided no evidence to backup their allegations. Yet, Cosby is treated as a convicted felon not only in the court of public opinion, but also by most of his business partners, like NBC. It seems now that women have declared a war on men, especially feminists like media chasing attorney, Gloria Allred. She is behind the women who implicated Albert and accused Cosby. She was also behind similar attempts to destroy former presidential candidate Herman Cain, golfer Tiger Woods and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to name a few. Cheryl Smith Advertising Editorial submissions Calendar
Allred seems to have this insatiable obsession with bringing down Black celebrities, with Cosby being the most notable one, but that will be the focus of a future column. Albert’s then employer, NBC, stood by him simply because he pled not guilty when the charges were announced back in 1997. According to NBC, “This past May, when charges against Marv Albert became public, Mr. Albert asserted his innocence and assured NBC senior management that there was no basis whatsoever to the charges. Today, given Marv Albert’s plea of guilty to assault and battery, NBC terminated its relationship with Mr. Albert. Now, this is the same NBC that cancelled Cosby’s new show that was supposed to air in 2014, right when these women all came forward with baseless charges. Cosby publically stated that there was no substance to these charges; unlike in the Albert case, NBC refused to stand
by Cosby and give him the benefit of the doubt. I will leave it to my readers to make their own conclusions, as to why there seems to be a double standard between how Albert was treated vis-Ă -vis Bill Cosby. Both are males, Albert is 75 years of age and Cosby is 79 years of age, one is White and one is Black, and one of them cost NBC money and the other one generated money for the media company.

Albert cost NBC money, because he was a paid employee, but Cosby made NBC money because he was a partner with them. So, they stood by the employee, who cost them money and rejected the partner who made them money. Can someone explain that to me? So, it’s been about two years since NBC cancelled Cosby’s show. The same amount of time

JACKSON: The right to vote in America has been fractured SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER by REV. JESSE JACKSON, SR
America’s election system is a disgrace, as the 2016 presidential election once more demonstrates. This isn’t sour grapes. I’m disappointed that my candidate lost but the election is over, the results are in. What every American ought to be outraged at, however, is that the United States is still not a democracy of one person, one vote. Our electoral system is suppressing the right to vote for millions. Start with the obvious. Hillary Clinton won the election, by a margin that may amount to 2 million votes. No need for a recount; she won big. But Donald Trump will be inaugurated president largely because he won three states — Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan — by a total margin of , at last count, 112,000 votes. The U.S. doesn’t count presidential elections by one person, one vote. Instead the system counts electoral votes with the winner taking all in every state except Maine and Nebraska. This not only gives greater weight to small, rural states over large populous ones like California; it also makes for perverse campaigning in a few, closely divided “swing states,” with much of the country essentially ignored. The president of the United States governs all Americans, not just Americans grouped by state. This is the second election in 16 yearsin which the winner of the popular vote lost the election. This dangerously saps the legitimacy of the presidency. The Elec-
toral College system survives only because most Americans know little about it. America makes it hard to vote. Registration is not automatic on turning 18, allowing states to erect different hurdles for registering. Voting is usually on a workday that is not a national holiday. States set the laws allowing for infinite schemes designed to make it harder for some to vote. Voting is the most fundamental right in a democracy — and the U.S. perversely empowers petty, partisan of-
to the polls — was outlawed. Polling places were reduced in numbers, particularly in poor or African-American districts. Hours were restricted. New forms of voter ID was required, usually to disadvantage students or minorities disproportionately. Electronic machines with no paper record are widely used, virtually inviting vote manipulation. Voter rolls were purged — allegedly to address fraud — but with lists that always target African-American and Latino voters disproportionately.

Holder. With Republicans shocked at Obama’s majority margins in 2008, Republican governors and legislatures pushed various schemes to make voting harder for the young, for people of color, and for working and poor people. Despite fierce legal battles, 14 states had various forms of voter suppression schemes in effect in 2016. Various tricks and traps were put into effect. Early voting days were reduced. that Albert was made to sit on the sidelines after pleading guilty to a crime against a woman, even though others came forward and accused him of similar crimes. So, can we now expect NBC to reengage with Cosby about the timeline for bringing his new show on the air? Mind you that Cosby has never been convicted of anything. I am sure that NBC stands for “Nothing But Consistency.” I am sure that NBC’s seeming double standard has nothing to do with race, especially when one actually admitted to wrongdoing and the other has consistently denied wrongdoing. What’s even more amazing is that the very year Albert was charged with a sex crime (1997), he was inducted into the basketball hall of fame and has subsequently received similar types of awards since. A few months ago, Albert received a new contract from TNT, his current employer. Again, juxtapose that with the treatment of Cosby. Without being convicted of anything, NBC cancelled his new show before it aired on TV, Spelman University returned Cosby’s $20 million gift, and several schools rescinded honorary degrees given to him. Am I the only one who is noticing this double standard? One person was convicted in a court of law of a sex crime, but pleaded down to a lesser charge and was rewarded with new contracts, lifetime achievement awards, and given the good housekeeping seal of approval by corporate America. The other person has been convicted of nothing and his whole life’s work and reputation has been stripped from him. In my best Fat Albert voice, “Hey, hey, hey, I got something to say.” How can a man who has done so much good for so many people for so long not be treated better than a convicted woman abuser? This is truly America in Black and White and there is nothing funny about it.
Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington
This column is all about not putting limits on a limitless God. In church, the sermon was all about how we, as finite creatures, do a pretty good job of trying to put the infinite being of God into some way, shape or form that we can understand. The problem with that is we can’t do it. Our brain won’t let us comprehend all knowing, all powerful, everywhere since before time began and after it stops. You see the terms “all,” “before,” and “after,” presuppose there is a limit to time and space and power and understanding and things. It is the way of a finite being which happens to be us. These are human characteristics and it is how we have come to rationalize life. It begins at birth. It ends at death. But does it? Pastor was teaching that as long as we operate that way, we limit what we think we’re able to do. His point and mine is don’t put man’s limits on God’s promises. You see each one of us has an image of ourselves on the inside of who we are and what we can do. It has been shaped by friends and family, situations and circumstances, what we want and what we have. For many of us that image is in direct conflict with what God sees and knows He has placed within us. Let me put it this way. Would you ask a homeless man for $100? Of course not! You wouldn’t ask, because you wouldn’t believe he had it. So if you do not believe there is greatness in you, dare I say you wouldn’t ask God for it. And there’s the rub. I am now of the opinion, it’s time for all of

us to put demands on God. I am not being arrogant or presumptuous. I am trying to be humble, respectful and obedient. God has been saying forever to ask him. As a matter of fact, He says, ask, seek, and knock. In each instance your action is promised a positive reaction. Don’t ask. Don’t get. I’m really talking about mustard seed stuff here.
God has been saying forever to ask him. As a matter of fact, He says, ask, seek, and knock. In each instance your action is promised a positive reaction. Don’t ask. Don’t get. I’m really talking about mustard seed stuff here. Your faith dictates what you ask for. Do you have enough faith to take the limits off God and to ask Him; to demand from Him the inheritance that is yours as delivered by the finished work of Jesus Christ? I understand this can be tricky stuff. And it’s not easy. We put obstacles in our way when it comes to simply receiving the grace and blessings of God. I’m merely pointing out that we have some say in this. We have a spiritual obligation to not limit God. The solution is to recognize those things we do that are subtle, but devastating to our achieving God’s purpose for us. Fear limits God. If you think the answer will be no, you won’t ask. Unbelief limits God. If you don’t believe it’s possible, then all things
become impossible. Disobedience limits God. If you disobey, you don’t think you have the right to ask for anything. And comparison limits God. If you feel unworthy and less than those who have more, you’ll accept what you have and nothing more. How? Why? By negating a willingness to believe that we are truly blessed and highly favored, made in the image of almighty God and destined to be great for Him. You know there is fear of failure and fear of success, both with the same result. I call it, “the do nothing”. It’s comfortable and you can handle that. Who wants to expect everything when the world has taught you that you don’t deserve anything? My proof of what I’m saying is in Matthew 4:11, after the devil tempted Jesus with everything in the world and He refused in the name of God. “The devil left Him and angels came and attended Him.” In the name of the devil, Jesus was aware enough to say, no, thank you. And because He knew where His blessings lay, God sent angels to attend Him and in God’s name gave Him everything the devil had promised. Think about that. Are you making any demands on God? He’s just waiting on you to recognize He’s your God, daring you to ask so He can give. Without the question, without the demand, it’s an unfulfilled dream, a mountain too big to move, a desire never met. And this I know. Psalm 37:4-5 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the lord, trust in Him and He will do this;” You gotta believe. May God bless and keep you always.

WHAT REALLY MATTERS?
In many states, former felons who had paid their debt to society are permanently deprived the right to vote. Six million citizens have been stripped of the right to vote, disproportionately people of color. In four states — including Florida and Virginia — more than one in five African-Americans has been disenfranchised. In Wisconsin, the Republican governor and legislature pushed through new voter ID requirements. Three hundred thousand voters lacked the required ID; voter turnout was the lowest in two decades. In Milwaukee, where 70 percent of the state’s African-Americans live, turnout was down 13 percent. The suppressed votes were likely far more than the margin of victory.
In North Carolina, the governor and legislature openly cheered the success of their efforts to curb early voting among African-Americans that resulted from slashing 158 polling places in the 40 counties with large numbers of African-American voters. On average, black voters stand in lines two times as long as white voters, in a conscious and systematic effort to make voting harder, particularly for those working jobs without flexible hours. This list can go on, and it is an indefensible disgrace. This isn’t complicated. The American people should demand passage of a constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to vote and empowering the Congress to pass rules to protect that right. The candidate that wins the most votes should win presidential elections. Nothing radical, just common sense. National rules should make registration automatic and voting easy, not hard. The Voting Rights Act should be revived and strengthened. The Justice Department right now should be prosecuting states that violated basic voting rights. When America was founded, only white, male property owners had the right to vote. Americans demonstrated and died, and fought a Civil War to end slavery, expand citizenship to all and expand the right to vote. Now partisan officials are trifling with the very foundation of our democracy. No republic can survive long without legitimacy. Donald Trump rightly called the Electoral College a disgrace, before he won office on the basis of it. If he cares about this country, he will lead the effort to reform our election laws, rather than accepting a system that perverts the will of the people.
Ask Alma Dear Alma, Alma, I’m wondering what’s going on with Kanye West? Do you think there are some underlying reasons why he’s suffering from ‘exhaustion’ and canceling his shows? I am a huge fan and I made sure to see him anytime he was within 100 miles from where I live. As a super fan, I mean from way back to the “College Dropout” days, I am seriously worried about him and was wondering what your take is? Signed, Missing the Old Kanye
Dear Missing Kanye, Funny you should ask this question, as I’ve recently added Kanye to my prayer list. Clearly he has validated for us, money doesn’t buy endless stints of euphoria. Nope, life doesn’t constantly deliver peace of mind, your way every day or relief from unimaginable grief. My heart strongly feels Kanye is suffering from just that — grief. He has yet to settle his soul when it comes to the death of his mother. Maybe he feels responsible, as if he contributed in some way. Contemplating perhaps that his dream come true, chance of a lifetime, provided payment for his mother’s procedure. His actions, his pain, leads me to believe he’s trying to pay off a non-refundable loan with his life. My prayer for Kanye to a sister circle of saints, a consecrated collection of comforters who will — call on the Name, guiding
him back to his roots, the place where his mama would go when she needed to hear a word…Can I get a Amen?! If I had the chance, I’d say to Kanye, “Sometimes you need a chitchat, a conversation from somebody who knows you by your ole’ school nickname not your gangster Grammy game.” Along with prayer, he needs professional help, ain’t nothing wrong with that. A professional will guide him out of the hallway of pain and blame, towards a classroom to reconcile, replenish and educate himself on how to live without his loving mother. Understandably, he won’t want to attend this course, but it is undeniably a lesson on heartbreak that he can’t afford to skip.
