NAACP’s Rev. Barber urges Black Publishers to take on Trump By James Wright Special to the AFRO
A Message for the President! Editor’s note: This letter was first presented by Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III at the Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017 church service at Friendship-West Baptist Church where he is the senior pastor. Shared on social media, the letter has gone viral. Many expressed the need for this letter to receive maximum coverage and distribution. A highly-respected voice internationally, we’re honored that the scholar, author, orator, advisor, preacher, teacher, activist, theologian, mentor, son, husband, father, Dr. Haynes, gave permission for us to share this message with our readers.
date on it. In love, I offer you some medication for your bipolarity. Honestly, I am praying for you. I am praying that God would arrest you and cause you to experience a repentance that will lead to personal and national transformation. I write praying that you will rise to the dignity of the presidential office and be delivered from the petty politics of demonizing others. Our nation is sick and you are feeding more toxins and poisons into the body politic. I couldn't remain silent as you embrace Islamophobia and xenophobia while marching this nation towards an ugly fascism. You have ignored the pained protests of the indigenous Standing Rock Sioux and jeopardized the health of millions because of your determination to repeal Obamacare; because apparently you don't care. You have attacked the media that was complicit in your election because they didn't hold you accountable for your "alternative facts" and belief that if you say something that's not true, long enough and loud enough, it will become true. Now you have used religion as a weapon with the full support of your puppets in the pulpit.
Dear President Donald Trump, Grace and Peace and Love be multiplied.
Rev. William Barber II, at NNPA Winter Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, FL
The Rev. William Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP and leader of a movement in that state to overturn voter identification laws, told publishers of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) to fight President Donald Trump’s policies. The NNPA held its Mid-Winter Training Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from Jan. 25-28. Barber is the pastor of Greenleaf Christian Churches, Disciples of Christ in Goldsboro, N.C., and the architect of the Forward Together Moral Movement that protests the conservative policies of the North Carolina General Assembly. He told the publishers that being subservient to Trump’s agenda is unacceptable. “Bowing down is not an option, Barber said in a speech. “We have a deep moral deficiency in our democracy. We need to have a focus on morality and values. He encouraged the publishers to write stories about the connection of White evangelism and racism in the country. “Some of our folks are sending money to White evangelists, who, he said, are promoting an anti-Black, anti-immigration and anti-gay agenda. Barber added, “They are not promoting policies of Jesus but the empire. The minister went on to say that the election of a Trump isn’t anything new but is “as

I wanted to offer my congratulations but our state of emergency precludes me from empty pleasantries. Further, you rode a wave of division, fear and hatred into your electoral college victory for the presidency of these "yet to be" United States. I must admit that you brilliantly united in unholy wedlock, manipulating the media with your cult of celebrity and the ugly unresolved issue of race and racism to give birth to your illegitimate victory. Your "reality show campaign" stirred up white rage and produced a "whitelash" to use the explosive expression and "Messy Truth" of Van Jones. You did and said anything to get elected by preying on ethnic, religious and racial hostilities in a nation that has never been truthful about the ugly undercurrent of white supremacy and heteropatriarchy. You've even placed a picture of Andrew Jackson, the genocidal, slave holding racist in the Oval Office because you see him as a model. You appointed a neo nazi, white supremacist as an influential and powerful leader on your staff. All of those are warning signs that portend your concept of making "America Great Again" has ev-

erything to do with making America hate, again. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was right when he quoted James Baldwin and wondered if we had integrated into a burning house? Our house is on fire and you are throwing gasoline into the conflagration. I hear from those who've met you in person that you are a nice man. If that is true then you must be bipolar because your policies and nominations are mean spirited and a reflection of white supremacy which, in case you don't know, has an expiration
This nation, snatched violently from the natives, was built on the backs of stolen Africans and with the hands of immigrants. Now you've issued an executive order targeting those you have "othered" in the name of religion. In the Name of Jesus, I stand in solidarity with my Muslim sisters and brothers and oppose this bigoted ban. If you are so concerned about terrorism from

Johnson and others speak out on Muslim Ban The Executive Order titled “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States, signed by President Donald Trump on Friday, January 27, 2017, effectively limits or bans immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. released the following statement after detentions at Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and across the nation due to the unconstitutional Muslim ban initiated by President Donald Trump: “I stand in solidarity with the refugees, immigrants and their loved ones who are being banned from entering our country. This does not represent the America that is made up of immigrants or the values we cherish, one being freedom of religion.
“Yesterday across the nation and here at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport many people were being detained and were not allowed entry into our country. This was all a result of the most recent executive action signed by President Trump banning individuals from seven dominant Muslim countries to enter our country. During this time there is a lot of confusion and families being torn apart. I am aware and waiting to be fully briefed on how many people are being detained at the DFW airport, so my staff and I can fully provide assistance and guidance to those who need it.

Garland Police Officer Felicia Jones praised for assisting motorist
Officer Felicia Jones
Garland Police Officer Felicia Jones assisted a motorist whose vehicle hood had unlatched and obstructed her view while driving on IH-30. The driver was able to pull over and call 911, and in minutes Officer Jones arrived, secured the hood for the driver and escorted her safely off the highway. The driver was so grateful for
Officer Jones’ service that she contacted Garland Police the next day to thank Officer Jones for her bravery and professionalism. “I know that my call was probably not the most significant she received that shift, but I can tell you that for this scared stranded driver, the little boy growing in my tummy, my sweet 2-year-
old at home and my loving husband... it was the most important thing she did that night, the driver of the vehicle, Jennifer Rickerson, wrote in an email to Garland Police. “It’s the little things that police officers do without even thinking that mean so much to people in our communities, Jennifer continued. “I am so grateful
for Officer Jones and others like her that are willing to put themselves in danger and discomfort every day. What’s even more impressive is when an officer can perform her duty with such compassion, empathy and professionalism. Officer Jones joined Garland Police two years ago after seven years as an officer in Shreveport,
Louisiana, and she is already a Field Training Officer and one of the department recruiters. “She is definitely one of the ‘faces’ of the Garland Police Department, said Garland Police Chief Mitch Bates. “If we had 300 more like Felicia Jones, you wouldn’t need me or any other Police Chief.
