True she will become a 7-Eleven franchisee, but she was a winner a long time before she entered the competition and bested hundreds of other female applicants to emerge at the top of the pile, taking over social media to capture the 1st place slot in 7-Eleven’s first ever franchise give-away contest targeted exclusively to women. I’ve known Alyson’s and her mother, Terry, for over 15 years. Actually Terry is my realtor and many of her dynamic traits are visible in Alyson. White Supremacist jailed after attack By Freddie Allen (Managing Editor, NNPA Newswire)

James Alex Fields Jr., a 20 year-old from Ohio, who drove his dark gray Dodge Challenger into a crowd of people protesting a White nationalist march in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday, August 12 showed a deep interest in Nazism and Adolph Hitler in high school. Fields is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder, among other charges. ABC News reported that Derek Weimer, Fields’ former world history teacher at Randall K. Cooper High School in Union, Kentucky, said that Fields was “fairly quiet, “smart, and also an open admirer of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. According to ABC News, “Some of Fields’ classmates at the school recalled a trip to Europe a group of students took after graduation in 2015, when they visited the Dachau concentration camp. Two of the students on the trip said when they arrived at the concentration camp, Fields said, ‘This is where the magic happened.’ Last weekend, White nationalists descended on the college town to protest the removal of a statute of Robert E. Lee, the infamous general of the Confederacy. Fields’ mother, Samantha Bloom, told the Associated Press, that she thought her son was attending a political rally, “that had something to do with Trump and that she tried to stay out of her son’s political views. Media reports have described Heather Heyer, the lone fatality in Saturday’s tragedy, as a 32 year-old paralegal from Greene County, Va., and a supporter of Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.). Heyer was in Charlottesville to protest against the White nationalist rally in Charlottesville. Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer called Heyer’s killing and the injury of others a “terrorist attack with a car used as a weapon.

In a statement about the violence and the White nationalist march in Charlottesville, Neera Tanden, the president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, said that events over the weekend are another stark and disturbing reminder that violent extremism continues to exist in our neighborhoods and communities. In a statement from his New Jersey golf club, President James Alex Fields Jr. Donald Trump said that he condemned the “egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke said that the White nationalists’ protest represented a turning point for this country. We are determined to take this country back. We’re gonna fulfill the promises of Donald Trump. That’s what we believed in, Duke said in a video posted to Twitter. Facing sharp criticism for the president’s initial response to the tragedy, the White House issued a follow-up statement that included a stronger rebuke of “White supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazis and all extremist groups. Tanden said that throughout the campaign and in his brief presidency, Trump has had many opportunities to not just fully distance his administration from those allied with Nazi sympathizers and the KKK but also to denounce them. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) tweeted that the Black Press condemned the racial hatred and violence in Charlottesville. “Love presupposes justice, equality, free-

dom, and empowerment. Hate renders only more hatred, Chavis tweeted. Echoing Tanden’s concerns about the president’s dithering remarks about the White nationalist movement, Congressman Cedric Richmond, (D-La.) said that since the campaign, President Trump has encouraged and emboldened the type of racism and violence that occurred in Charlottesville. “This is a president after all who has two White supremacists working for him in the White House—Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller, said Richmond. “For these reasons, we weren’t surprised President Trump couldn’t bring himself to say the words ‘White supremacy,’ ‘White supremacists,’ and ‘domestic terrorism’ when he addressed the nation’ on Saturday. He instead chose to use racially coded dog whistles like ‘law and order’ and false equivalencies like ‘many sides.’ Richmond continued: “Where is Attorney General Sessions? Instead of suppressing votes and dismantling affirmative action, he should be working with the Department of Homeland Security to investigate today’s crimes. Richmond noted that the CBC urged Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security to investigate this sort of domestic terrorism, months ago. “As 49 members who represent and are part of a community who has for centuries been victimized by White supremacists, we strongly condemn what happened in Charlottesville, said Richmond in the statement. “We also condemn the Administration’s poor response to it.

Chevrolet offers Worried Parents Free OnStar Family Link Technology available as August sees spike in number of teens turning 16

DETROIT — With nearly 362,000 kids in the U.S. turning 16 in August — more than in any other month this year — Chevrolet knows parents with driving-age children need a little added peace of mind. Throughout August, Chevrolet is offering customers three months of free OnStar Family Link. OnStar Family Link allows parents to stay connected to their teens no matter where their young drivers roam by providing access to teens’ vehicle locations. Parents can also set up email or text alerts to know when a vehicle has arrived and departed a destination or traveled outside a specific area. “The day your children start driving is a dream come true for them, but it can be a nightmare for a concerned parent,” said Lu-

ciana Chamberlain, Family Link product manager for Chevrolet. “OnStar Family Link can help minimize a parent’s anxiety by letting them know when their child has arrived at school, left a friend’s house or traveled outside of their comfort zone.” Any Chevrolet owner in the U.S. with a 2012 model year or newer vehicle and an active OnStar subscription[1] can sign up for three months of free OnStar Family Link by visiting OnStar. com. Once signup is complete, vehicle location services and alerts can be set up at onstar.com/familylink. After the three-month trial is over, parents will have the option to keep OnStar Family Link for $3.99 a month plus tax. Chevrolet’s Peace of Mind Services

OnStar Family Link is one of several Chevrolet technologies that reduce the concerns moms and dads have when their children get behind the wheel. While OnStar Family Link helps monitor teens’ locations, Chevrolet’s Teen Driver and OnStar Smart Driver services can also help parents manage and mentor driving behaviors. “Driving on their own was big event in my children’s lives, but that also meant I spent more time thinking about where they were and how they were doing,” said Steve Majoros, director, Chevrolet Marketing. “Chevrolet wants to put parents at ease by offering in-vehicle technology that shares real-time info on where their kids are and how they’re driving, so moms and dads can give feedback that helps their teens become better drivers.”

Teen Driver Available on 10 model-year 2017 Chevrolet vehicles, Teen Driver allows parents to mute the radio when the front-seat occupants are not wearing safety belts, set radio volume limits and speed warnings and limit top speed to 85 mph. It also automatically enables many available active safety features and prevents anyone from manually turning them off. In addition, parents can use the Teen Driver in-vehicle report card to know about the distance driven, maximum speed reached, overspeed warnings issued, stability control events, antilock braking events, traction control activations, wide-open throttle events and, if equipped and supported, Forward Collision Alerts, Forward Collision Avoidance Braking events and Tailgating Alerts.

OnStar Smart Driver When it comes to helping teens develop better driving skills, parents also can give feedback and spark discussion with OnStar Smart Driver. It provides monthly and trip-by-trip scores based on driving behaviors such as hard braking, speeds over 80 mph and rapid acceleration. The monthly reports also rank where a driver stands compared with others in the state or with individuals who drive the same Chevrolet vehicle. And after 90 days, parents can choose to share their OnStar Smart Driver driving report with participating insurance companies to potentially qualify for savings[2]. OnStar Smart Driver is available on most 2015 and newer Chevrolet vehicles.

Spot Bid Contract Fair proves again a boost for Texas' minority-owned businesses DALLAS -- Since 2000, State Senator Royce West (D-Dallas) has made increasing contracting opportunities for minority-owned businesses a priority through the creation of the "Doing Business Texas Style" - Spot Bid Contract Fair. This year's Spot Bid Fair produced more than $3.5 million in total contracts with nearly $2.48 million awarded to Texas minority-owned businesses; designated as Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUB) by the state. The Spot Bid Fair was held May 8-9,

2017 at the Irving Convention Center where more than 80 state agencies and universities were on hand and prepared to offer contracting opportunities to Texas-based HUB businesses. "Each year, the State of Texas spends billions of dollars for the purchase of goods and services. Included in those billions spent are highway projects and state-owned buildings, such as with our university systems which are paid for by taxpayer dollars," Senator West ex-

plains. "With this level of procurement should come tremendous opportunities to help stabilize and grow small and minority-owned businesses. I have made it my business to see to it that these opportunities are made available to Texas HUB. I see it as a win-win situation for all parties involved." In 1997, Senator West co-authored Senate Bill 178, which created the statutory basis to encourage state agencies with annual budgets that exceed $10 million to devel-

op procurement plans inclusive of HUB vending opportunities. Locally, the University of North Texas at Dallas reached agreements with HUB businesses totaling more than $255, 000. The Texas Department of Public Safety awarded 60 contracts for services with HUB businesses worth nearly $279,000 through the fair. Also locally, UT Southwestern Medical Center reached agreements totaling $111,000. Contracting opportunities with state agencies typically fall under

the categories of building construction or heavy construction, professional services - such as accounting or architectural services, and for products or other commodities. According to the Comptroller's Office, 550 HUBs pre-registered for the Irving contract fair, which was co-hosted by the Dallas/Fort Worth Minority Supplier Development Council. They were awarded more than 700 contracts with state agencies and Texas' universities.

Best wishes to the CLASS OF 2018 - Enjoy this year!

HALL: 10 Yards a Slave?

QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

Whether you surf the web, meander through your social media, or venture out on the NegroNet, the saga of Colin Kaepernick is a major source of consternation for African-Americans and Progressives. However, our protests have not made a first down, much less a touchdown in the gridiron battle to get Kaepernick back into the National Football League. So here’s the plan‌No NFL (Period) unless and until Colin Kaepernick is “repatriatedâ€? with a team in this league. #turnitoff Let me begin with a per-

sonal testimony. I still haven’t been able to sit and watch any remnants of the film “12 Years a Slave. My spirit has been routinely traumatized by events that co m m e n ce d with the execution of Trayvon Martin to the present travesty of the Trump monarchy. I just can’t watch anything about slavery, mass incarceration or official oppression. Nike can, “Just Do It, but I cannot. My inclination was to see the new film “Detroit but the stamina it takes for me to withstand wanton and

unfettered racism on the big screen, is just not in me. However, I do watch the last six

phen the “House Negro. The 2017 version of Django would shoot ESPN’s “House-

minutes of Django every time White Nationalists/Terrorists and “45â€? get on my nerves‌ which is often. Django didn’t single out White racists; he summarily dismissed “Ste-

boy, Stephen A. Smith too. Kaepernick is personal for me. I suffered my only suspension for refusing to salute the flag at age 15, as a member of the Student Senate at

Skyline High School. It made me so mad that I’ve saluted the flag only twice since. Two times after the election of Barack Hussein Obama when I was really feeling hopeful about this nation’s unwritten race compact. And I regret those two lapses now too. Listen to what Steve Wise, the White, lettered, antiracist essayist said last year that still amplifies the pro-Kaepernick argument. “So just in case you were wondering, when a white man bellows that America is no longer great, and in fact is akin to a â€œthird worldâ€? country, and that many other countries are better than we are at all kinds

of things — and this is why we should elect him, so he can “make America great again,â€? because right now, we’re sorta suckin’ wind — that is the height of patriotism. The kind of talk we need! The kind of nationalistic endorsement around which all Americans should be willing to rally. And when this same man says black people aren’t safe from other black people, and they can’t even walk down the street without getting shot by other black people, and that’s why they specifically should vote for him, so he can make their communities safe, that too is to be understood as a laudable commentary, even an ecumenical “outreachâ€? to African Vincent L. MALVEAUX: What must we do to help HBCUs? Will another HBCU “bite the dust? Truly, it depends on us. Pennsylvania’s Cheyney University, the oldest HBCU in the nation (founded in 1837) has been on probation since November 2015. If the Middle States Commission on Higher Education does not accept a sustainability report that is due on September 1, the school may lose its accreditation. Without accreditation, Cheyney students cannot receive federal financial aid like Pell grants and federal loans. Many would be forced to leave school because they can’t afford to attend school without assistance. Cheyney is part of the Stop the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, an organization that took nearly 20 years to settle a lawsuit with the college because (PASSHE) funded predominately white institutions (PWIs) in Pennsylvania more favorably than Cheyney. While PASSHE provided Cheyney with some money to address the issues of inequality, most say the amount they provided was just a fraction of that due. At the same time, Cheyney has borrowed millions of dollars

from PASSHE. Because of the borrowing, PASSHE has assembled a task force that would sell Cheyney’s land, slash its academic programs, reduce enrollment (which is already extremely low), eliminate NCAA sports and also cut staff. In other words they would kill the college. Can we afford to lose another HBCU? Cheyney’s detractors say that the college is not necessary, and that PASSHE should merge it with another nearby college, either sister HBCU Lincoln University, or another PASSHE school, West Chester University. Some say it isn’t race, but mismanagement, that has plagued Cheyney. But too many HBCU leaders have been accused of mismanagement, when the real issue, especially for state-supported institutions, is a lack of resources and a history of underfunding Black colleges. And most face the challenge of underfunding with some innovation. For example, Cheyney has developed a new business model that includes creating an Institute for the Contemporary African American Experience. They envision this institute as a

potential magnet for student enrollment, which will bring more revenue to the college. But with a September 1 deadline nipping at their heels, the survival of Cheyney is in the hands of the accrediting organization. An organization called Heeding Cheyney’s Call (HCC) has held events and urged people to support Cheyney. They say that Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf (D) can intervene before Middle States makes an accreditation decision, and that he can also instruct PASSHE to back off from their plan to sell Cheyney’s land. An August 1 event attracted the support of both local and national leaders, including city council members, state legislators, members of Congress, clergy, and others. US Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) is among those supporting Cheyney. That support, commendable as it is, isn’t enough to save Cheyney. The college, like so many HBCUs, needs re-

sources and the state can’t be counted on to provide them. So will Cheyney be the next HBCU to bite the dust? Or is the African American community, and other concerned folks, prepared to step in the gap for the college? Cheyney has an abysmal alumni giving rate, at less than 10 percent (one report pegged it as low as 6 percent). It is unconscionable that alums would flock back to campus for social events or graduations, but not write checks to support their college. To be sure, some alums get tired appeals that highlight dire emergency situations. But HBCUs are in a state of emergency, when people constantly question their reason for being, and when federal and state dollars are scarcer than ever. Too many believed 45’s prevarication about supporting HBCUs. Too many presidents got a photo op, but no more money, when they met with 45.

Those of us who wring our hands and decry the state of HBCUs can do more than we are doing now. Whether we attended HBCUs or not, we can support them. We can adopt one and become regular contributors to that university. We can encourage students to attend HBCUs. We can do fundraisers for HBCUs, even in places that don’t have HBCUs. In Las Vegas, Nevada, a city councilman stages a football game where an HBCU plays the University of Nevada Las Vegas’ football team. The event raises tens of thousands of dollars for the HBCU team that plays UNLV. In addition to fundraising, though, we must also think creatively about HBCU sustainability. If buildings are not fully utilized, why not create summer, evening, and weekend programs for the public? Is there revenue-generating distance learning? Have stakeholders taken time to generate new ideas for sustainability? With the 45 attack on affirmative action, HBCUs may be more important than ever for African American college attendance. When doors close

at other institutions, HBCUs will be there if we support them. I’ve heard the argument that some HBCUs have challenges and may not provide a Harvard-quality education (few schools do). The quality of an HBCU education is at least partly a function of the resources available to that college. You can’t have state-of-the-art labs or media centers without money. Where are the resources? If we want strong, solid HBCUs, we need to support them. We can only blame ourselves if Cheyney, or other colleges close for lack of support. Federal and state funds can make a difference. But individual and foundation contributions are equally, if not more, important. As students head back to school this August, we have to ask if those headed to HBCUs will be able to enjoy their 10th, 25th, or 50th college reunion. They won’t unless we all step up. JEALOUS: That Taney Statue in Annapolis Needs to Go! By Ben Jealous

Oftentimes on Sunday after church you can find me in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood walking with my children and admiring some of the city’s beautiful architecture, and historic monuments. For too many years, I’ve struggled to explain to them the meaning of one statue in particular: former Supreme Court Justice Roger Taney, the author of the infamous Dred Scott v. Sandford decision, which stated that “the Black man had no rights that the White man was bound to respect. In a world where my children saw the nation’s first Black president and family occupy the White House, I can see their tiny faces grappling with the two realities of the only country they’ve

ever known. How can there be a monument to a racist who suggested people like them have no rights, while at the same time, we have witnessed a Black man occupy the highest and most powerful position in the world? Rather than attempt to rewrite history, I often end up explaining to my children our nation’s tortured past and that during those times, there were many many others who stood up and fought for the better America we live in today – where a Black man could become president, and even perhaps their Black father could be the next Governor of Maryland. The tragic events of Charlottesville are a sobering reminder that when we allow these symbols of hate to stand, the consequences could be far more dangerous than having to burden a young mind with the trials and tribulations of race in America. In fact, Charlottesville demonstrates we now live in a time where timidity and passivity towards these symbols can turn deadly.

Many claim these monuments are symbols of our history and taking them down is revisionism. However, if our desire is to remember history, why do confederate statues outnumber union ones 4:1 in Baltimore City, when the majority of our state’s soldiers fought for the union? Clearly this isn’t about our history. Baltimore City is taking action to remove these symbols of hate, and we need this kind of leadership across our entire state, but that requires a governor with the courage to lead. As Governor, I’d work to remove all confederate monuments, beginning with the statue of Taney that sits right outside our state house in Annapolis. While the Taney monument represents the worst of America and Maryland, it’s made of good metal that can be repurposed and cast of

the same bronze in Fre d e r i c k Douglass’ image just in time for the bicentennial of his birth in 2018. A contemporary of Taney, Douglass fought for the rights of the enslaved, free blacks, women, and all Americans. He was a forward-looking patriot who chose to fight and advance our country. In fact, despite living in an era of slavery, where he met virulent racism regularly, Douglass saw the true heart of America, and what it could one day be. He said that America’s destiny was to be “the [most] perfect national illustration of the unity and dignity of the human family that the world has ever seen. A man who could live through the worst of America and still see the best of it, a man who saw that we could one day make up for the

moral weight of our transgressions and could become the America we have always claimed to be. This is the man that stands for the very best of what it means to be an American. Replacing Taney with Douglass keeps us true to our history, while setting the right example for our children in demonstrating that even in the most trying of times, we cannot forget who we are, nor seek power through the oppression of others. I have called on Governor Larry Hogan to stop equivocating and begin working immediately to remove confederate monuments, beginning with the Taney statue outside of the state house. We have seen the message we send to terrorist groups when we do not forcefully and clearly denounce hate in all forms. So far, when asked about these monuments, the Governor has said removing them would be “political correctness run amok. The Governor doesn’t understand that removing these monuments is not about political correctness, rather it is about setting

an example for our children and showing them that hate and bigotry in America will no longer be honored. Charlottesville reminds us with great urgency, that we are not living in ordinary times – the same old approaches to bridging the racial divide in our country aren’t working. We can no longer accept half measures. There are forces at work who want to take our country backward and we must realize that the struggle for civil rights is never-ending. It is only by confronting the truth of why these statues are here to begin with that we can begin to heal a nation still struggling with the demons of its past. Women’s health threatened by restrictions to Medicaid Services By Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson When the Affordable Care Act was signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010, states were given the opportunity to expand

Medicaid coverage. After a 2012 Supreme Court decision that allowed states to opt-out of expanding Medicaid, 19 states chose opt-out while 32 states and the District of Columbia chose to expand Medicaid. Texas chose not to expand Medicaid and has looked for creative ways to cover its large population such as employing programs through a Section 1115 Medicaid demonstration waiver. Section 1115 of the Social Security Act al-

lows the Secretary of Health and Human Services to waive provisions of Medicaid law in order for states to have flexibility to plan and improve eligible programs. There are several purposes of Section 1115 waivers: expand eligibility to those not covered by traditional Medicaid, provide services not typically provided by Medicaid, and use an innovative delivery system that improves care and reduces cost. While Texas has had a Section 1115 waiver to implement improved care delivery and increase coverage for uninsured and underinsured residents, Texas has also applied for a family planning waiver that would restrict access to patients. Texas has applied for a Section 1115 family planning demonstration waiver, which would expand its existing state-funded program. As the Women’s Health Program, the

I’m your original “distant lover” Dear Alma, I am a 50-year-old field service engineer who travels 75 percent of the year for work. I love my job and appreciate the opportunity that I am able to travel around the world. No, I’m not in the military, so I can pick and choose where I decide to reside long term. Basically, the problem is maintaining long distant relationships with my family, friends and holding down a love life. I try to stay in touch with my family and friends through cell phone calls and Facebook but sometimes it’s just not enough. I miss them when I’m traveling and honestly, it’s hard to maintain a healthy adult relationship with a woman without her eventually telling me I’m away too much. I’m single, active and I would consider myself to be handsome. How would you suggest I meet a woman who would understand my situation and consider being in this type of a relationship? Lamont in Ohio Dear Lamont from Ohio, Yes, I’m putting you on

blast, cause this is the first time I’ve run across, a truly handsome (yes girls, I saw his picture), and gainfully employed engineer with benefits, who’s discussing how difficult it is to maintain a long distance healthy adult relationship. The first thing that comes to my mind is, “Seek and ye shall find, my brotha ~ you came to the right place, LOL.”I’m here to agree with you sweetheart, there’s no double about it, long distance relationships (LDR’s) take an enormous amount of hard work, but then again, a regular in your face, every day relationship does, too. I say, navigate the negativity, as long as the two of you are serious about your commitment and devotion to each another, a LDR can be quite successful. In my opinion, a LDR requires two mature adults who are completely confident in their own right. Each has got to be comfortable in their own skin and not looking to be completed or validated by the other. All lines of communication must remain open and honest always. You’ve gotta trust each

other. That’s super important! With today’s technology options, you can keep in touch daily, practically face to face. I’m sure you’ve heard it said before, absence does make a loving heart grow fonder. Can you see it in your minds eye? Lawddy, can you imagine anticipating the next time you’ll see each other? Wheew, kool it down, this columns rated: PG, LOL. I could go on and on with the positives, but no need, I’m sure you feel me.Evidently you’ve been looking in all the wrong places or you’d be hooked up by now. Today’s the day to steer yourself in a new direction. Start looking to find a woman who’s pursuing her dreams, occupying her time, joyfully participating in her life. Since you’re on the road most of the time, I’m sure this task won’t be easy. Soooo, you know me, I just can’t help myself, I’ll see what I can do to help you out. Ladies: If you’re interested in contacting Lamont, shoot me an email. I see springtime and love just around the corner. Alma

services from a provider participating in the program. During my time in Congress, I have pushed for the renewal of the Section 1115 waiver which helps to cover our uninsured and underinsured population. However, this family planning waiver is misleading and unfair to those who seek health care and actual family planning services. Several of my colleagues and I sent a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to oppose this waiver proposal. The protection of freedom of choice of family planning providers is important to me. We must protect our most vulnerable, especially Medicaid beneficiaries, who otherwise would Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the state’s 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

Franchisee hails from Dallas, continued from page 1 rallying their teams to vote. From the beginning Alyson had the lead. And she kept that lead, pulling ahead significantly at the end. Many thought it was a done deal, but there was another step. The top three vote getters had to go for a round of interviews. When I talked to her about the competition, she had nothing but kind words for the other contestants. She praised their efforts, discussed their merits and methodically laid out why she thought they were excellent choices. Did I tell you this young lady was impressive? Here are a few questions I had for 7-Eleven once the decision was made. After all I had to know what was going on since I committed to working 10 hours a month, unpaid, at whatever location Alyson chooses: Q. In the pitch, it reads, “She will also be able to choose any of 7-Eleven’s convenience store franchises that are available in the U.S.” Are any available in the D/FW market? A. Yes. You can find a full list of available 7-Eleven stores at franchise.7-eleven.com.

Q. FOLLOW-UP... If she will be acquiring a store that is already in existence, any of the stores without an owner, what happened to render them ownerless? Are the stores without owners in problem areas? A. Stores available to franchise are currently corporate-owned. Many of these locations are either brand new or changing over from a former Franchisee. Q. Does 7-11 plan to build any new ones? If so, will those be an option for Ms. Lawson? A. Yes. If Alyson Lawson would like to wait on a brand new store to open she may do so. Q. Initially the impression was given that there would be ONE winner. When and why was theT:5”decision made

to give to all three finalists? A. “To say that each candidate was impressive would be an understatement,” said President and CEO Joe DePinto of his interviews with the three finalists. “Each brings a unique set of strengths. In addition, all are extremely community-oriented and have strong business, leadership and interpersonal skills. Those are qualities successful franchisees need. Any one of them would make a great independent business owner at 7-Eleven, and I couldn’t see selecting just one, when all three are exactly the type of folks we want as franchisees and as part of the 7-Eleven network.” Q. How long is the process from today to grand opening? A. The usual franchising process from application period to store opening is 3-6 months. However, the timeline may be a bit longer if Alyson chooses to pick a brand new store that is not already open. I am anxiously awaiting her grand opening so we can share in her success by supporting her. She deserves it!

T:10”

T h e older I get the more convinced I am that I am going to surely fail, fail miserably as a matter of fact, in my attempt to be perfectly Christ like. We all know, or should know, this is just not going to happen. However, as we also know, it is our job to humbly and consistently keep trying and striving to emulate our Lord and Savior. There are all kinds of expressions to describe this rather unique occurrence in the Christian experience; everything from ‘backsliding,’ to falling off the wagon, to suffering a setback, or simply falling down. In each instance, I think the Christian’s obligation is to weather the storm and reverse direction, or more aptly put, ‘get back up on my feet again.’ I don’t know about you but one of the hardest things for me to do is to know I’ve blown it with regard to Christian behavior. I have maintained an un-Christian attitude for longer than I should; held onto my anger too long. Or, I’ve enjoyed someone else’s misfortune much too much. You see when that happens, because I profess and believe the good news of the gospel, I do understand what is supposed to be inherently good and what is not. Yet I’ve acted or reacted outside of the parameters of what I know is good Christian behavior. At this point I know I’m in trouble because I indeed do know better. It becomes hard and kind of embarrassing to ask God for forgiveness, when you know He knows that you do know better. For me that’s pretty tough. It’s like stealing and having to confess to your mother, or, being caught cheating and your punishment was delivering the bad news to

your mother by a note from your teacher. For those of you who have had to carry such burden, I’m sure you understand that sinking feeling as you have exhausted every excuse possible in a vain attempt to delay the inevitable. The moment of truth has come. You’ve got to tell Mom. Stay with me for a moment and relate this situation to having to tell God. You know that He already knows. It is then absolutely necessary and incumbent upon me or you to stand up, ‘fess’ up and proceed down the only road that makes sense, with the full knowledge that you will be okay. The Lord still loves you. Getting through that whole process has always been very difficult for me because, I believe what I’m feeling is generally stupid and certainly clear about knowing better. When you’re a Christian, you do know better. I don’t know which is worse, knowing better or having to tell God that you knew better. The good news is, God knows what’s in your heart. It is His measure of who you are and who you are in relation to Him that really matters. It’s because of that, that God knows you are repentant, just like your mother knew you that you knew better because she raised you. She also knew you were truly sorry. It remains the only basis for forgiveness. For me it still remains an uncomfortable exercise to square my shoulders, assume the position faced down in reverent prayer and enter into the domain of my Father and reveal that kind of failure. Each time it happens, I’m reminded that God did not come to call the righteous, but the sinners of which I am one, regardless of how enlightened I might think I am. Remember this the next time you review the day and realize how much better you could have behaved. May God bless and keep you always.

Obama Administration denied the 1115 waiver application, so the program has operated as a state-funded initiative since 2011. This year, the re-named Healthy Texas Women program proposes to exclude abortion providers from program participation. This means that organizations affiliated with abortion providers cannot participate in the program. The Healthy Texas Women program has negative public health impacts – tested by the state’s own data – and does not introduce a new or innovative project nor does it expand access or strengthen coverage. By 2016, Texas saw a decline of 35% in access to birth control for women on Medicaid. Over four years, Texas saw a three-fold increase in the maternal mortality rate. By 2016, 26% of the women enrolled in the program had never received health care

State Fair of Texas Announces Free Lineup of Pre-Fair Horse Shows

Just in time to kick-off the State Fair of Texas are the 2017 pre-Fair horse shows! This month-long lineup offers a series of horse shows featuring teams and riders from all over the nation. Located in the Fair Park Coliseum and the Livestock Judging Pavilion, events began August 4 and will take place every weekend through September 16. All shows are free to the public and offer fun entertainment for the entire family! Ranch Sorting: August 18-20 Location: Fair Park Coliseum Starting time: Fri. 9 a.m., Sat. 9 a.m., Sun. 9 a.m. Using strategy, teamwork, and stock knowledge, ranch sorting celebrates traditional skills by requiring modern riders to divide and separate 11 cows. A team of two riders must know and anticipate how a cow will instinctively move in order to successfully move them from one pen to another in numerical order, all while maintaining the fastest time. NCHA Cutting: August 25-27 Location: Fair Park Coliseum Starting time: Fri. 8 a.m., Sat. 8 a.m.,

Sun. 9 a.m. Much like ranch sorting, the sport of cutting evolved from tasks performed by horses on cattle ranches. During a competition, a horse and rider team must demonstrate the horse’s ability to handle cattle during a two and a half minute performance in front of a panel of judges. Contestants are required to make at least two cuts, pulling one select cow from the group twice. Arabian Show: September 1-3 Location: Fair Park Coliseum and Livestock and Judging Pavilion Starting time: Fri. 8 a.m., Sat. 8 a.m., Sun. 8 a.m. Arabians are the oldest pure breed of any horse in the world and are known for their balance and agility. The Arabian show consists of a series of different classes wherein a group of horses with similar training or characteristics compete against each other. Rhonda-Voo Appaloosa Show: September 8-10 Location: Fair Park Coliseum Starting time: Fri. 8 a.m., Sat. 8 a.m., Sun. 8 a.m. Known for its unique and spot-

ted pattern, the Appaloosa is an American horse used in a variety of equestrian events including western pleasure, games, and as working cow horses. This show consists of a series of different events including jumping, cattle, and ranch classes where groups of horses with similar training or characteristics compete against each other. 1st Annual Arena Polo Match: September 15 Location: Fair Park Coliseum Starting time: Tues. 5 p.m. A fast-paced version of the polo sport, arena polo consists of four “chukkas,” or periods of seven and a half minutes, where opponent teams must score against each other before time runs out. The team with the most points wins the match. Donkey and Mule Show: September 16-17 Location: Livestock Judging Pavilion in Fair Park Starting time: Sat. 8 a.m., Sun. 8 a.m. The horses’ larger-eared “cousins,” the donkey and mule, must compete in a multitude of events including hunt seat equitation, obstacle driving, pleasure driving, timed driving, course driving, western pleasure, mulemanship, donkeyship, reining, trail, barrel racing, stake race, scramble, and physical appearance. 4x4 Chute Out: September 16 Location: Fair Park Coliseum Starting time: Sat. 8 a.m.
