“Wouldn’t take nothing for this journey�

It’s been a Journey!

this journey now, but what I pray is that we reconnect as a community and grow as a political power.

Not power for the sake of its wielding, but for the sake of the 22% of Dallas children who live in poverty.

The kind of power that is not blinded by an excess of cranes and construction, but a community whose heart and head can no longer tolerate the sight of the homeless waking up underneath bridges, lodged in doorways or camped near highway underpasses.

I wouldn’t take nothing for this journey now, but there is nothing I wouldn’t give to expand educational excellence in our public schools and uplift our educators.

We must make all of our law enforcement agencies accountable and show them love simultaneously.

Teachers and the Police have inherited the job of making up for all of our state legislature’s mess-ups.

We have to manage their success because each is tied to the safety and health of this community.

I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now. Thank you for standing by me.

Thank you for praying for me, so I wouldn’t be preyed on. Thank the “Free Press� for believing in me.

I wouldn’t take nothing for this journey now, and I wouldn’t take anything in exchange for the love we share in community.

Dear Sojourner, It would go beyond the bounds of protocol for me to neglect the duty I have to thank the citizens of Dallas County.

I feel compelled to seize this time and space to express my august and sincere appreciation for the outpouring of encouragement and support over the breadth of this six-year journey. You kept me prayed up, which left no room for me to be preyed on.

The only way to describe my feelings at this point would be to borrow from the title of Maya Angelou’s first book of essays; “I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now.�

That line was a lyric lifted from “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize,� a freedom song of the Civil Rights era and one of Dr. King’s favorites.

But more than that, it should remind all of us that God never puts on any of us any more than we can bear.

My mother, Willie Faye said it, and I believe it.

My deepest and singular regret is that dozens of my friends and associates were treated as “persons of interest� during this process.

There is no way that I can atone for the losses you have sustained in legal fees, loss of business or leverages on your reputation.

Major corporations who had been partners in community outreach were inconvenienced and in some

cases sullied. Please accept my apology. Nothing grieves me more than the “collateral damage� that accompanied this odyssey.

I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now because the love you showered me with was unconditional, phenomenal and genuine.

Clergy leaders in many churches installed me on their prayer lists and my name was lifted up regularly.

I have met men and women of all ages from Hamilton Park to Highland Park who have been more than gracious.

The constituency that I have served for more than 30

years greeted me with a hero’s welcome at every point of meeting.

I wouldn’t take nothing for this journey now because I have been reunited with students I spoke to decades ago and been privileged to meet the children of this generation.

God provided strength and solace for me with every impromptu selfie and snapshot that I have been privileged to appear in.

You held me up on Facebook and Twitter. But more than that, you have used this journey as a meeting place for community issues.

Dare I say sexy gospel? Apparently, it’s a thing. With strong beats and a familiar type of flow, gospel singer Keyondra Lockett’s music pulls people in. “That’s not the first time that I’ve heard sexy gospel,� Lockett said. “They call it sexy Jesus music too. But I ain’t trying to be sexy at all.�

In this instance, the desire is to draw people closer to Christ. “I understand the thing that mainstream artists have is the know-how to keep people engaged, and they use music, they use style, and they use passion and words,� Lockett said. “So, as a gospel artist, I use music. I use style. I use passion. I use words. The passion of Christ and the Word of God.�

Lockett is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana who currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia. Her mother, who is also her “momager,� lives in Garland, Texas. Lockett is proud of her southern roots, and smiled wide as she proclaimed to be a graduate of Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport which she quickly mentioned is “Home of the Gators.�

The gospel music arena is not new for this 32-year-old artist.

Having released her first solo project in 2012, Lockett credits her former and two-time Stellar Award nominee group, Ziel (pronounced Zy-El) as the launch pad for her current success. “I think that that platform definitely catapulted me. I’ve always wanted to do music,� Lockett said. “The things that I’m doing now, I never thought that I would do them and they’ve been placed in my lap, and I feel like that’s when you know that that’s the hand of the Lord, and that’s purpose.�

The goal of living a purposeful life also has Lockett involved with numerous non-profit organizations. From Glam Camp for Girls and the American Red Cross to bringing awareness to human trafficking through Rock, Paper, Scissors and Saving Our Daughters, she feels working with these organizations aid in a higher purpose. “I think community work is the best work. Lockett is such a doll. Literally. The Keyondra Doll is a friend to The Kenya Doll, a brand of the early 90s. She says Shereese Slate of Jenesis Milan Agency brought this project to life.

“The Kenya Doll brand, passion, and pursuit is to allow young black girls to know they are growing up proud and to be proud of who they are,” Lockett said. She added “The Keyondra Doll is going to take that stance too – be a brown, beautiful chocolate girl… whether mocha brown, caramel brown, dark brown, and love who you are.”

Lockett’s doll brand is connected to her summer campaign called The Beautiful Experience that teaches young, black girls to know and understand their purpose.

“Your skin don’t block nothing, your hair don’t block nothing – God made you who you are and you’re beautiful,” Lockett boldly stated.

Lockett has the pulse on this current trend in gospel music and says as a young person, she loves all types of music.

“When you enjoy something, you go and talk about it. You spread the word…the message about it. And I hope that my music does that for people.”

Former Dallas Police Chief Brown Finding Ways to Combat Youth returns to local spotlight Crime in our Community

Retired Police Chief David O. Brown will be in Dallas on June 7 and discuss his life and the challenges of modern law enforcement at a program presented by the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth and the AT&T Performing Arts Center.

The program is the debut event on Chief Brown’s tour for his biography, Called To Rise: A Life in Faithful Service to the Community That Made Me. Each ticket purchase includes a free autographed copy of the book.

The conversation with Chief Brown, will be moderated by Keven Ann Wiley, Vice President and Editorial Page Editor of The Dallas Morning News.

MALVEAUX: Civil Rights under Siege THE LAST WORD

By Dr. Julianne Malveaux When he was running for President, 45 asked African Americans what we had to lose by electing him.

Embracing the most dystopian view of the African American community, he attacked our schools, our streets, crime rates, and unemployment and suggested that we were so far down that electing him could only improve things.

Curiously, he never talked about racism when he talked about the status of African Americans.

He never spoke of hate crimes, police killings, or racist symbols like Confederate flags and Confederate statues.

He never denounced some of his most racist supporters, including Klucker David Duke and alt-right leader Richard Spencer. He just asked what Black folks had to lose by electing him!

We’ve been learning what we have to lose in these nearly five months of 45’s “leadership�. He cynically

used HBCU Presidents in a photo op, while cutting education funds that help HBCUs. He has been silent or slow in denouncing racist incidents that have occurred on his watch, including the lynching of Second Lt. Richard Collins III, and the murder of heroes Ricky John Best and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, who stood up to the rabid racist Jeremy Joseph Christian, who was harassing two young women on a train in Portland (it took him three days to respond tepidly to that incident).

As of this writing, two days after a noose was hung in the Smithsonian Museum for African American History and Culture, he has not uttered a syllable of condemnation. These issues don’t appear to be important to him.

Are we surprised, then, that the budget he has submitted to Congress, would eviscerate civil rights protections in literally every area of our lives.

Already, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has moved back toward draconian jail sentences for minor crimes, reviewed consent decrees with police departments,

looking to loosen them, and suggested that the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department can be smaller.

The budget reflects that so clearly that Vanita Gupta, who led the Civil Rights Division under President Obama and now leads the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, says she sees this budget as a “setback� for civil rights.

The new budget calls for folding the Department of Labor Office of Federal Contract Compliance (OFCCP) with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, although the two agencies do distinctly different work.

EEOC investigates civil rights complaints, while OFCCP audits contracts to ensure that employees have equal opportunity in terms of both promotions and pay.

The proposed budget cuts OFCCP by 16 percent and eliminates 130 full time employees.

When the other 470 employees are absorbed into the EEOC, that agency will not get an increased budget despite its expanded mission.

Both agencies have been important in ensuring that civil rights violations are rectified.

In 2010, EEOC had more than 20 active cases that involved nooses. Even as

nooses continue to be hung as symbols of intimidation and hate, such as the noose hung at the African American Museum (the second hung at a Smithsonian museum in a week), the agency charged with investigating these complaints would have fewer resources to do so.

Similarly OFCCP has won money settlements for thousands of employees, and changed employment requirements when those requirements have a discriminatory impact.

Women employees at Home Depot were among those receiving monetary settlements because of OFCCP investigations.

At the Department of Education (surprise, surprise), a woman who opposes affirmative action leads the Office of Civil Rights. That office will be cut significantly, limiting its ability to investigate discrimination complaints in school systems. At the Environmental Protection Agency, efforts to look at environmental justice have been eliminated.

From the noose hung at the African American Museum to the defacing of

LeBron James’ home with a racial slur, there is continuing evidence of the persistence of racism in our nation.

This racism is emboldened by a national leadership that is silent despite its manifestations.

We cannot be surprised.

Our 45th President, after all, once said he did not trust African Americans to work on his accounting.

He probably would have failed any OFCCP audit, and certainly attracted several housing discrimination lawsuits decades ago.

The President who has been accused of discrimination has the power to ensure that his capitalist cronies face fewer accusations by weakening civil rights enforcement.

JACKSON: The lie about voter fraud is the real fraud TRUTH TO POWER

Jesse Jackson After President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey because of, as Trump admitted, the “Russian thing,� he struck a new blow to American democracy: He created a commission on “election integrity,� stemming from his fantastical claims of voter fraud in the 2016 election.

In reality, fraudulent voting is virtually nonexistent.

The claims of widespread voter fraud are a fraud.

Voter suppression, on the other hand, is a real, present and increasing threat to our democracy.

And all signs are that Trump’s commission will add to that threat.

Trump named Vice President Mike Pence as chair, with Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a leading advocate of ballot-restricting legislation, as vice chair.

Kobach has made a national spectacle of himself as a crazed pursuer of mythical voter fraud.

In Kansas, Kobach has led Republican efforts to suppress the vote.

As Ari Berman of the Nation reports, Kobach claimed that “the illegal registration of alien voters has become pervasive,� although he could point to only five alleged cases of noncitizens voting in Kansas during the previous 13 years.

Since the law went into effect in 2013, Berman reports, “one in seven Kansans who attempted to register have had their registrations held ‘in suspense’ by the state.�

To solve the non-problem of voter fraud, in 2015 Kansas gave Kobach the power to prosecute such cases. So far, he’s convicted nine people.

Only last month did he convict his first and only noncitizen for voting fraud.

The Kansas City Star has noted the paltry results Kobach has to show for his unique prosecutorial powers, mocking him as the “Javert of voter fraud,� a reference to the obsessed police inspector of “Les

Miserables.�

Now Kobach will be the driving force leading Trump’s commission. Its purpose, no doubt, will be to cry wolf about voter fraud and push more states to pass harsh legislation to suppress the vote.

Unlike voter fraud — which every independent study shows is essentially a myth — voter suppression is real and growing. The most significant outside factor in the 2016 campaign was not the scattered cases of voter fraud, or Putin’s hacking, or even former FBI Director Comey’s interventions.

The most significant factor was the suppression of the vote — particularly the black vote — in North Carolina, Philadelphia, Detroit and Milwaukee.

A recent study by Priorities USA, a Democratic PAC, estimated that Wisconsin’s harsh voter ID laws “reduced turnout by about 200,000 votes� — disproportionately black votes.

Trump won the state by 22,748 votes.

The 2016 election was the first in 50 years without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act. Fourteen states had new voting restrictions in effect for the first time.

Now Berman reports, 87 bills to restrict access to the ballot have been introduced in 29 states this year.

Instead, voter suppression has become a partisan weapon. Our very democracy is under assault.

When your good works are interrupted

By Rev. Yvette Blair Lavallais No matter how well you plan, goal-set or dot every “i” and cross every “t,” there is always the likelihood that something or someone will interrupt your good works.

I’m talking about interruption in a major way – not just getting you off schedule and causing you to have to spend a few extra hours accomplishing a project.

In October 2016, my good work was interrupted in a major way. I was in a ministry setting where I was repeatedly the “unwanted attention” of a male member who had a fixation on me. He would repeatedly grab me, uninvitingly touch me and was both consistent and persistent in his behavior.

I reported it to the senior pastor on more than one occasion, yet it never stopped.

It escalated to the point that this male member came in on me one evening as I was preparing to teach a Bible study class.

I found myself alone, in my office, with a six-foot white man towering over me, insisting that he be allowed to touch me.

My safety was at risk and the agency of my personhood as a woman had been interrupted.

In the time that followed that traumatic experience, every fiber of my being was impacted.

Because the pastor of the church was adamant that this male member, who had a previous history of this behavior toward other women, be allowed to remain a part of the worshiping community, I could not remain. In every instance of reporting it, the senior pastor made it my responsibility to set boundaries with this man. My safety could not be ensured and as a result, my good work in that setting was interrupted.

My range of emotions went from fear and frustration of having to endure that “fixation” over a period of four months to being disheartened and disappointed.

Even with there being no support or contact extended to me by the senior pastor of the church, following that horrific evening, I knew that in my own calling and work as a pastor, I had to decide that my good works could not and would not be permanently interrupted by this.

In that I had been told by the senior pastor to set “boundaries” with the male member and to talk with someone else within the congregation who could offer advice on how not to “agitate” this male member, perhaps it was presumptuous of me to anticipate any support at this juncture in the ordeal.

To compound the situation, I was the first and only African American clergy serving in that church’s 100-plus year history.

The makeup of the congregation reflected the church’s non-diverse history. Here I was, an African American woman repeatedly being “touched” by a white male member of the church.

And every time I reported the situation, it came as no shock to anyone. Each person

knew who I was talking about without me ever having to utter the name of the man.

He was known for this behavior and the church seemingly had grown accustomed to it.

My agency as a woman of worth and value had been interrupted – in the church of all places. Too often, women find ourselves at the intersection of race and gender where our personhood is under attack.

When it happens within the sacred spaces of the church, the impact of the hurt is magnified.

If we are not careful in how we process it, the traumatic experience can easily interrupt our relationship with God – especially when the interruption happens in the church.

God is with us in our struggles. In the aftermath of this experience, part of my good works is to make sure that women, especially those who have suffered and survived sexual harassment, oppressive structures and systems, and other inequities, can find their healing within the sacred texts of Scripture.

We serve a God of liberation and healing. It is important for pastors, preachers and those who proclaim the Gospel to intentionally lift up biblical texts in a way that restores worth and value of women. To not do it, is to further exacerbate the oppression and hurt.

In the collection of essays, “I Found God in Me: A Womanist Biblical Hermeneutics Reader,” womanist, theologian, scholar and author Mitzi J. Smith (who edited the collection) says, “God’s image is not monochromatic nor is God’s voice monotone.

God speaks in tunes and tones that resonate with the oppressed and marginalized, particularly with the lived experiences of black women and other women of color.” (page 9) When we open up the Scriptures and read the narratives of Miriam, Ruth, Hannah, Mary, and the unnamed women whose experiences are relatable to the women in our midst – our mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, sistah friends and besties – we should do so with the goal of looking through the lens of their experiences and then lifting up the hope and healing that is there in the text.

If you only share the text through your limited experiences and never take into account the many experiences that those in your midst have endured, then you never truly show the full range of who God is.

When you are doing good works, the enemy will try his best to thwart God’s plans.

When you are doing good works, there are situations and circumstances that will arise, many times at no fault of your own, that will seek to destroy the purposeful and meaningful impact that you are having on God’s kingdom.

But it is when your good works are interrupted that you must make a decision and declaration that the interruption is only temporary.

God will always make provision for you to do good works. When it does not work in one setting, trust and believe that God will go ahead of you to prepare the way for you to do God’s good work in another setting.

Note: Right at press time, Rev. Yvette Blair- Lavallais received word of a new appointment and she says she is “looking forward to a fruitful ministry in that church.”

Cheryl Smith When I met Yvette Blair, she was a young, beautiful, smart, ambitious, aspiring journalist at the University of North Texas. From the beginning I knew she was talented and I looked forward to helping her develop as an intern with several other students at The Dallas Weekly.

Over the years I’ve watched her take on numerous roles, and I have watched her grow, excel and help others.

Yes, she did surprise me with some of her decisions.

First she chose to attend divinity school. I won’t argue with that choice because I do believe in divine intervention; however I thought with her impeccable journalistic skills she would be breaking news stories around the world.

Then, she decided to get married. And there was no arguing the two were made for one another and whatever God had in store for Yvette, she had a partner to share the experience.

Watching Yvette and Carl together, it was clear they were happy and that is what I wanted for her.

Sometimes when you have a mentee, the relationships are short-lived. Ours has expanded over nearly 30 years and it was painful to hear of the challenges she was facing.

Sure I was there when her mother passed and knowing how close they were, that was a painful experience, but the toll that the unwanted harassment on the job was causing her, well, it was hard to listen to, without speaking words I have tried to stop using in her presence.

Then I thought about all the stories I have heard over the years, and the instances when I have witnessed clergy women being disrespected, not only by men, but women, too!

Misogyny is alive and well.

Women are to be silent sufferers.

That same mentality that kept some men and women from voting for Hillary Clinton for President of the United States, or caused them to discount Atty. Anita Hill’s claims against Clarence Thomas, is prevalent in many churches and some are very open about not having women in the pulpit or recognizing their presence in any capacity.

Sure you can be the church secretary or choir director; but as far as interpreting and delivering the word, perish the thought.

Thank God there are valiant men and women who realize the significant contributions that clergy women have made and hold them in the highest esteem.

I remember attending a breakfast of Black ministers with the Rev. Jesse Jackson. As I talked with one of the women attendees, when we were interrupted by a female hostess, who said, “I need to find your husband because Rev. Jackson is calling for all ministers to join him on the dais.”

Well, my friend and I looked at one another because she has been a minister longer than her husband!

I replied, “You know she’s a minister also, right?”

The hostess responded, “Yeah, that’s right, I forgot!”

Come on Sister! They get it from the men, and the women too!

Now, please note, I am not saying that Rev. Jackson snubbed the Minister, it was a woman.

Some might say this isn’t the same. Well 30plus years from now when churches are paying out millions because of lawsuits, some of the same naysayers will hopefully be around to see what happens when “good”men and women are silent.

I urge you to read Rev. Yvette’s testimony on the front page.

Also it is important to note that in a correspondence from her immediate supervisor who gave her steps for dealing with the perpetrator, but he failed to address dealing with the complaint.

I wonder if Mr. Andy Lewis would respond differently if Rev. Yvette were a child.

and denigrate or shame.

To the men and women who stepped forward seeking justice, well, I am not surprised to hear your names: Dr. Shirley Ison-Newsome, Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price and others; I say thanks for being on the right side of history time and time again.

To the members of Black Methodists for Church Renewal under the leadership of Phiebie Hutchins, and of course Rev. Yvette’s husband Carl, and other family members, thanks.

Bishop Michael McKee, shame on anyone who would try to cause further harm to Rev. Yvette while uplifting and circling the wagons around Pastor Andy Lewis.

Well on to Rev. Yvette, who has had the support of men and women, but sadly the lines have been drawn in this blatant case of sexual harassment.

Rev. Yvette came forward to let her team at First United Methodist Church Lewisville know that she was being touched inappropriately by a congregant.

I must applaud Rev. Yvette for speaking out.

She still remains a voice for the voiceless, just like those soldiers without swords who started the Black Press.

She realizes that she is not the only one that has been assaulted and that possibly some of the others include children.

What does this say about those who choose to remain silent, disregard or make light of Rev. Yvette’s allegations?

Have we all not learned anything from the thousands of claims and lawsuits resulting from cover-ups.

Remember that first story that appeared in

Ironically since the assault became public knowledge, Mr. Lewis was not held accountable for fostering a dysfunctional, illegal work environment.

Instead he has since been promoted.

Yet, Rev. Yvette is expected to go away, get counseling or disappear.

As Rev. Yvette shared her situation with me, I thought of countless women I know who were called into the ministry, like my sister Kasandra Smith Davis, Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, Rev. Sheron Patterson, Rev. Vonciel Jones Hill, Rev. Paula Dobbs-Wiggins, Rev. Barbara Reynolds, Rev. Ouida Lee, Rev. Aisha Karimah, Sister Ava Muhammad, Dr. Earnestine R. Weems, Rev. Jacquie Hood-Martin, Rev. Marcia Dyson, and I could go on and on.

I wondered how many had to suffer at the hands of those who instead of using the scriptures and religion to empower, educate, uplift, liberate and inspire; chose to oppress

about and I look forward to sharing your perspectives with readers.

When the lawsuits come, because one day they will, we must all remember what Dr. Martin Luther King said, “In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

This is the first in a series as we look at the response to Rev. Yvette’s charges and those of others who have spoken out and were cast aside and left to suffer alone.

No one deserves the treatment that Rev. Yvette has received. Never mind that she is sweet, compassionate, giving, kind, intelligent, highly ethical, and sincere.

She is dedicated and a woman worthy of emulating. She has also been more enduring than so many other women I know, including myself.

It’s time to air out the laundry. We must begin addressing issues and providing solutions so that healing can take place.

Here’s another case of silence in the midst of suffering!

The student media crew that covers the entire Frisco Independent School District, housed at their studios inside the Career and Technical Education Center, has worked tirelessly to tell the stories of education, inspiration and school year activities that are unique from campus to campus.
