A voice you should know Known as “The Daytime Diva with the Voice, celebrity radio personality, Lynne Haze, has one of the most recognizable voices and contagious personalities in radio today. And she uses her celebrity for the benefit of others. She is a mentor to other women in the industry, never resorting to the cat-fight mentality that is often associated with such a competitive field. Instead, Lynne is about uplifting and that is what she does on and off air. Most recently, she gathered necessities to help benefit those in Houston affected by the Hurricane. Friends, co-workers and loyal listeners joined her at Ten Eleven Grill in Dallas for food, fun, and a purpose as everything from disposable diapers to cleaning items were donated and prepared for shipping to Houston. A 21st Century Mary Magdalene, growing up, the native New Yorker had no clue that not only would “radio personality be a description on her resume, but her path to life.

More than 58 Dead, 500 injured in Las Vegas Mass Shooting Lynne Haze

A mother-daughter heartto-heart prompted the start of Lynne’s career in her hometown of Buffalo, New York, at WUFO-FM. There, she worked as a news and weekend broadcaster until she moved to WBLK and worked successfully as a late night host. Later, the Universe tilted her toward Dallas, Texas where, at KKDA-AM, Lynne found herself an on-air personality in the #5 radio market in the country. At the peak of her career, Lynne decided it was time for a challenge and transitioned to a career in the record industry, where for 10 years she thrived considerably at See HAZE, page 6

Las Vegas authorities have identified Stephen Paddock, a 64 year-old White man from Mesquite, Nevada, as the gunmen in one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history. During a brief press conference Monday morning, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters that more than 58 people were killed and more than 500 people that were wounded during the attack were transported to local hospitals, according to The New York Times. Police have determined that Paddock fired on the crowd

of roughly 22,000 attending a country music festival from his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Sunday night. “Online video of the attack outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino showed the singer Jason Aldean performing outside at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, a three-day country music event, interrupted by the sound of automatic gunfire, The New York Times reported. “The music stopped, and concertgoers ducked for cover. Authorities haven’t reported anything about Paddock’s motive; not much is known about the weapons used in the attack, although some exSee SHOOTER, page 3

SHOOTER KILLS SELF

US Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson “The violence that took place in Las Vegas last night is yet another senseless act of gun violence to shake our nation. I extend my heartfelt condolences and prayers to the victims and family members of those who were faced with such horrific violence. The perpetrator’s actions were deplorable, reprehensible, and inexcusable. While his actions were aimed to strike fear at the heart of the American people, we are a strong nation and a community that will stand

together as one during these difficult times. “This is an important time to mourn the loss of our loved ones. However, it is also an important time to act. I will work with my colleagues in Congress to consider preventive measures to alleviate tensions throughout our society and stop such egregious attacks on innocent people before they happen.”

Texas State Representative Helen Giddings ”Early this morning, dozens of lives were lost and

thousands were changed forever by the tragic shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada. Words are not nearly enough, but we pray those affected by this senseless tragedy are able to heal from the unimaginable pain they are experiencing today. “In times like these, our country must be a family. We must bring words of encouragement and shoulders to cry on. We must be good neighbors and caring colleagues. But more than that, we must demand change in our culture and in our laws. Until crimes like these are impossible to imagine, we must work exhaustively to bring change. The people of Las Vegas deserve our vigilance. Our nation deserves safety. The work must begin again”

continued from front page perts have speculated that multiple firearms were used, including a high-caliber, automatic rifle. Police have reported that Paddock died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to NBC News, “The brother of Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock was stunned to learn Monday that his relative was the suspected perpetrator of the largest mass shooting in modern American history. Paddock, who lives in Orlando, said his brother has retired to Mesquite, Nevada and spent his time at the hotels, going to shows and gambling.” During an interview with NBC News, Paddock said that his brother, “was just a guy” and that the family was “completely at a loss.” Monday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted, “My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!” Lin-Manuel Miranda, the American composer and playwright of the award-winning play “Hamilton,” also took to Twitter to share condolences for people affected by the tragedy in Las Vegas. “Heartbroken by the news out of Las Vegas,” Miranda said. “Praying for those of us waiting for news from loved ones who went to hear live music on a Sunday.” During an interview with MSNBC, Danny Tarkanian, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from Nevada said that the attack was “the worst fear of anybody who has lived in Las Vegas.” Jamelle Bouie, the chief political correspon-

dent for Slate.com, questioned why authorities hesitated to call the mass shooting an act of terrorism. “That Las Vegas authorities have ruled out terrorism at this early stage is another example of how the idea has all but been racialized,” Bouie tweeted. Writer and social media activist Shaun King suggested that the shooter’s “whiteness” prevented authorities from calling him a terrorist, even though he “conducted the deadliest mass shooting in American history.” As some took to social media calling for the mass shooting to be labeled an act of terrorism, others used the tragedy to call for stricter gun control. Still, most social media users continued to share sympathy and prayers for the concertgoers and their families. “Don’t even know what to say,” R&B singer Trey Songz tweeted. “To be in Vegas while this is happening, brings a pain to my heart. My team and I are safe Thank God! Prayers up.” NBA superstar Isaiah Thomas tweeted, “Prayers up for the victims & families of the Las Vegas Shooting! #PrayForVegas.” Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association offered prayers and sympathy for those who suffered in the attack, while calling for a deeper conversation about the role that guns play in American society. “NNPA affirms heartfelt condolences to families impacted by senseless murders in Las Vegas,” Chavis said on Twitter. “End gun violence!”

NABJ names Toomer as Executive Director

Sharon Toomer

Former journalist and public affairs senior executive brings impressive portfolio to oldest and largest journalists of color association WASHINGTON, D.C. -- National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) President Sarah Glover recently announced that the organization has named Sharon Toomer, an accomplished media executive and nonprofit leader, as its new executive director. The announcement comes after an intense selection process and extensive national search facilitated by Harris Rand Lusk. "We are excited that Sharon will be joining us at this critical time in NABJ's history," Glover said. "Her combined fundraising, organizational, executive management, journalism, and public affairs experience and skills make her a dominant force. Sharon is experienced, visionary and passionate. We feel confident that she will serve us well in the implementation of NABJ's strategic plan and be an impactful leader that shapes the national office as NABJ continues to grow and evolve. "NABJ is so very fortunate to have Sharon onboard." Citing Toomer's vast experience in public affairs, communications, journalism and new media, as well as her professional and organizational skills, Glover said the Spelman College grad-

uate was very impressive throughout the process and exhibited several traits that will serve NABJ well. "NABJ is making big strides. We are raising the bar, and capacity building our beloved NABJ," Glover said. "Strong leadership is critical as members are responding positively to the improved value NABJ provides and, equally important, the media industry needs NABJ to be forward-thinking now more than ever. Sharon's dynamic leadership is right on time." NABJ secretary Cheryl Smith agreed. "While her resume was impressive and displayed the depth of experience and leadership necessary to lead the national office, also of significance is Sharon's passion, commitment, work ethic, management skills and sincerity," Smith said. "There's no doubt in my mind she is the ideal person who will be of great benefit." For Toomer, joining NABJ as executive director, "Is a rare moment in my career lifespan when opportunity, preparedness, shared interest and timing intersect." Definitely no stranger to the organization, Toomer said she considers it a privilege to work for an organization that she personally knows has made a difference for so many. "Since its founding, NABJ continues to be an essential pillar in the journalism and media landscape. In the world we're living in today, the talent, skill, perspective and nuance of NABJ and its members is even more urgent in journalism," she said. "Together, with an outstanding board, I look forward to advancing NABJ's mission, raising its profile and strengthening its capacity." Prior to joining NABJ, Toomer served as senior vice president for public affairs and policy at Matlock Advertising & Public Relations, where she led the agency's Reputation Group in its work with a diverse portfolio of clients representing the corporate, nonprofit, academic and

3

business sectors. Toomer has also served as chief of staff and senior policy advisor for U.S. Representative (D.C.-Shadow) Franklin Garcia. Toomer has also worked as an editorial producer for CNNfn and CNN Headline News and founded the award-winning digital news platform Black and Brown News. As a communications professional, Toomer served two Kings County (Brooklyn, NY) District Attorney administrations. She also worked for the Association of Black Foundation Executives, the Brooklyn Borough President's Office and the City University of New York faculty union. A past recipient of CUNY's Graduate School of Journalism Political Reporting Fellowship, Toomer's widerange of experiences and multicultural worldview has earned her awards in journalism excellence, and appearances on television, radio, print and digital news outlets. Her diverse viewpoint brings nuanced insight and added value to the workplace, projects and dialogue on key issues of the day. NABJ Treasurer Greg Morrison also expressed excitement about Toomer. "I've known Sharon since she was a college student and I have watched her mature and develop as a team player and leader," he said. "She is definitely more than prepared to lead our national office. We are looking forward to great things under her tenure and I know she will make us proud." In addition to her organizational skills, Toomer expounds on key issues of the day. In October, her perspective and writings on community violence and trauma will be published by the National Academy of Medicine's expert paper collection, Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health. Glover said Toomer is expected to begin on Oct. 9.

Revelations 3:16 declares that because you were neither cold nor hot, but lukewarm, I spat you out of my mouth. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journalist.

MALVEAUX: What happens to a dream deferred Our 45th President swept into office with a foundation of racist claims. First, the very basis of his political participation was his false assertion (for which he has never apologized) that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States. Using the “birther movement as a basis, 45 signaled to every random racist out there that he was willing to ignore truth to attack President Obama. Then, he used horrible rhetoric to describe Mexican people as violent rapist, followed by his usual “and some of them are very nice. He suggested that a federal judge could not do his job because he was of Mexican descent. And much of his campaign was focused on deporting people. The pace of deportations has increase in these few months since he took office. Now, he has snatched the rug from under stable lives that a group of young people called “dreamers have built. These young folks were brought to these United States by parents who came to this country illegally. In legal limbo, thus unable to apply for jobs or college admission, many of these young people lived shadow lives, working under the table

or not at all, piecing together livelihoods as best they could. President Barack Obama grappled with this issue and, through executive order (because Congress would not act), created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Attorney Generals in some states have described the program as illegal and have threatened to sue for its elimination. Attorney General J. Beauregard Sessions has said he would not defend the program because President Obama “overreached in establishing it. So the camera hogging 45 actually allowed Beauregard (who he very recently dissed) to announce that DACA will be ended, although there is a “grace period of six months. I don’t think many understand how many hoops childhood arrivals must jump through to attain “dreamer status. They have to pay almost $500 every two years and fill out more than a dozen forms to qualify, including forms that detail income, expenses and assets. They must have a work permit. If they move, they have to inform the US Customs and

The Last Word by Dr. Julianne Malveaux

Immigration Service. And they can’t leave the country without permission, which is only sparingly granted, and usually only for educational purposes.

same privileges that other citizens have, and they have more responsibilities. Their status may be revoked if they have had any interactions with “law enforcement

Requests to visit relatives are rarely granted and even when permission is granted there is no guarantee that dreamers will be allowed back into the country. So, while President Obama did a great thing by creating DACA, the program does not go far enough. Dreamers do not have the

officers, and we all know how that one goes. While it appears that 45 has given dreamers some hope by delaying enforcement of DACA elimination for six months, and by making nice with Democratic leaders, the drama of dangling possibilities in front of folks and then snatching them away is

typical 45 showmanship and irrationality. The fact that Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House parrot, raised Black unemployment in a White House press conference is further evidence of this administration’s racism. Has there been any other time when these people have mentioned Black unemployment? Part of the reason 45 is revoking DACA has to do with his anti-Mexican, anti-immigrant, racist biases. But part has to do with his administration’s attempt to eliminate anything Obama from our government. It is pathetically appalling to watch the way that 45 and his minions are obsessed with President Obama and the work he did. As an example, Education Secretary Betsey DeVoid (of good sense), has decided to “examine the Obama approach to campus rape. She is more concerned, it seems, with those accused of rape or sexual assault, than with the victims. FBI data shows that only 5 percent of rape accusations are false. We should be more concerned about those who

won’t come forward than those who are unjustly accused. But someone who works for a genital-grabber might well see things differently. Similarly, an Obama-era regulation that would have EEOC collect data on pay differences by race and gender in companies with more than 100 employees has been suspended and so-called woman’s advocate Ivanka Trump has said that collecting such data really doesn’t matter. As many as 800 Obama executive orders and regulations have been reversed. We shouldn’t be surprised that DACA has met the same fate. Dreamers aren’t going to simply slink back across borders to countries they have never known as adults. Moments after Beauregard Sessions’ announcement they took it to the streets in protest. They are letting 45 and his sidekicks know that their dream won’t be deferred. We should all be inspired by their activism and stand with them for justice. Christ’s Homegoing, Imagine That Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

For some reason, the phrase ‘rejuvenated in the spirit’ is resonating with me right now. My reference point however is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, if you can believe that. I have been revisiting Christ’s last experience on earth and was struck by the fact that God’s Christ had to be excited, if not relieved to be going home. I mean think about it this way. He humbled himself by putting on human skin to ful-

fill the new covenant under which we all now live. Now some of y’all might think I’m being a little sacrilegious here, but I promise you I am not. After the beatings, stabbing, thorns and nails, after the praying to not have to go through the save the world ordeal and that father forgive them they don’t get it thing, I am sure Jesus was ready to get up out of here. with unbridled enthusiasm because they know in a few minutes, mommy or daddy will be coming down that runway right there. That anticipation is what I am describing as ‘rejuvenated in the spirit.’ I just believe if we could view the cross as a symbol of our eternal life after death, then maybe we could look upon death a little differently than we currently do. I mean really. If you call yourself a believer, then that’s what this is all about. The party for Christ had to be incredible. If the truth be told, that party is still going on and everybody is anticipating when you walk through the door. That’s that Jesus thing again. I find it illuminating that after

death, Christ walked among us without the disfigured body on the cross, except for enough to make believers out of the doubting Thomases. That’s proof that when you get to the party, you too will be perfect in your form and perfect in your reception. This may not be a typical column but, based on the cross event, you too are transformed from ‘glory unto glory.’ If you can feel what I feel today, then you understand being rejuvenated. I am because He is. I will because He fulfilled the Word and I’ll see you when you get there. I just know that’s a welcome to look forward to.

Garland Ranked Among 2017’s Best Cities for Jobs In a recent report by personal finance company WalletHub, Garland was named among this year’s top cities to pursue a career. WalletHub ranked Garland No. 17 in its list of 2017’s Best & Worst Cities for Jobs. The study compared 150 of the most populated U.S. cities across 23 key indicators of job-market strength. With the national unemployment rate at 4.4 percent*—its lowest since 2007—job seekers should not only expect to see an increase in earning potential, but also the flexibility to choose a location based on job market and socio-economic environment.

Garland Wastewater Treatment Plants earn Performance Awards The National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) presented the City of Garland Water Utilities Department with two coveted performance awards. The Duck Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant was awarded the Gold Peak Performance Award and the Rowlett

Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant received the Silver Peak Performance Award for 2016. The Peak Performance Awards program recognizes public wastewater treatment facilities for their outstanding compliance records and excellence in wastewater treatment as measured by compliance with their National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. The Gold Award honors treatment plants that achieved 100 percent compliance during the calendar year. For Duck Creek, this encompasses more than 4,000 permit parameters per year.

October Is National Community Planning Month The achievements of planning are celebrated during National Community Planning Month, and Garland kicked off this year’s celebration with an official proclamation at the City Council’s Regular Meeting Oct. 2. This year’s theme, Innovation in Planning, highlights the important role planning plays in addressing and adapting to challenges faced by communities in the 21st century. Innovation includes everything from using data sources and technology to address issues—such as inequality, access to transportation and

social mobility—to celebrating new approaches to creating communities of lasting value. The City of Garland Planning & Community Development Department will commemorate the month with events highlighting the role planning has played in our city. During the month of October, the Planning Department will host an open house at the Main Street Municipal Building, located at 800 Main St. The department has also produced a list of Great Places in Garland, similar to Great Places in America produced by the National American Planning Association. Be on the lookout for National Community Planning Month posters around town, event information on the City’s website, and Planning & Community Development’s new video on the Planning & Community Development webpage! The Silver Award honors treatment plants that had no more than five permit exceedances during the calendar year. Rowlett Creek had three exceedances encompassing more than 4,000 permit parameters per year. The program has honored tens of thousands of NACWA Member Agency facilities since its inception in 1987. The awards demonstrate the hard work of every treatment employee and their commitment to being good stewards of the environment.

The Honorary Chairperson will be DeShauna Barber, Miss USA of 2016. "When I lost my mother to cancer last August, it gave me an opportunity to understand how short life is. It also has given me the opportunity to understand how important it is to eat as healthy as possible and to treat my body like a temple," said Barber, who gave up her crown in June. "My main message that I want women to know is that we are fearless. We are limitless. I 've always been focused on inspiring women to chase their dreams and not feel limited by stereotypes or the umbrella that has been placed over us in this country," added Barber who is an Army Reserve officer. "This year's event is all about the family. When you have cancer, it doesn't just affect you, it touches everyone that you love," said Sylvia Dunnavant Hines, the Founder of the Celebrating Life Foundation. The festivities will begin with an aerobic workout led my fitness guru Donna Rich-

Alcoholic parents Dear Alma, My Dad and my Stepmom have been together for over 20 years. They both have and always did drink way too much. I’d even say both are alcoholics. Recently my Dad was hospitalized and obviously told he has to stop drinking. My Stepmom says that’s his problem, not hers. How do I get her to see what she’s doing is wrong and how can I stop her from drinking in front of my Dad? My Dad won’t stop drinking if she keeps providing it.

Dear C.K., This is a tough situation and I sympathize with the position you’re in. That still, however, doesn’t remove the fact that your Dad has an addiction that he’s “large and incharge” of.

Let’s pause here and give you a minute to understand and resonate, this is your Dad’s burden to bear. Allow me a minute and address the consideration and compassion this deserves. I say this as respectfully as I can muster – you can’t give up crack living next door to the crack house. You feel me? Offer your Dad resources to finding a local Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. He has to take the first step. Once associated, I’m sure they’ll direct him on what his next step should be. Remind your father that facing his addiction is a sign of strength. Let him know you’ll support him unconditionally. After taking hold of his responsibility, your Dad will decide what to do about your stepmom. That, too, is his choice not yours. I’ll be praying for your Dad, you and your family. Alma

When Radio One recognized her impenetrable talent and hired her at 94.5 KSOUL, Lynne’s popularity exploded in the D/FW Metroplex where she became known as the onair “Daytime Diva.” There, she built a hugely loyal fan base, especially for the work she did in the community and for advancing the careers of women. A former president for the National Black Programmers’ Coalition, Lynne’s voice became a movement for creating change among women. A strong advocate for women supporting each other, she developed an outlet called, Meeting in the Ladies Room. Through these sponsored events, Lynne encouraged women and gave them peace from work stress, children and day-to-day living through laughter, music, networking and love. Adding to her list of accomplishments, Lynne has won numerous civic and entertainment awards, including Air Personality of the Year, Promotion Person of the Year at Mercury Records and a local award for the dedication at the West Dallas and Oak Cliff Boys and Girls Clubs. Today, over the airwaves and through technology, Lynne’s voice is still magnetic on Smooth R & B 105.7 KRNB-FM. A top-billed motivational speaker, Lynne’s infectious sense of humor amuses and startles audiences as she teaches using her real life experiences and thought-provoking stories as a platform for transformation.
