By Gwendolyn H. Daniels Photos by HRB Photography
An audience almost 300 filled the ballroom on September 16, 2017 at the Hyatt Place Garland Hotel on George Bush State Highway 190 to enjoy the NAACP Garland Unit’s 27th year of Freedom Fund events.
National recording artist Reuben Lael served as Master of Ceremonies and Texas House District 107 Representative Victoria Neave brought the keynote address. The morning was filled with shoppers visiting an array of items up for bid at the ever-popular NAACP Garland silent auction.
There was no shortage of political candidates in attendance shaking hands and passing out literature for the upcoming Texas State primaries, where early voting begins on February 20, 2018. The Garland Unit was backed by corporate sponsorship from Massey Cadillac of Dallas, Garland Power & Light, Office Clean America, Dallas Superstore, Randall Reed’s Prestige Ford, and First Guaranty Bank. The spotlight of the morning came when NAACP scholarships were presented to eight seniors: Kyla Anderson, president of the Garland Youth Council received the prestigious Elaine Bradley Scholarship for $1,000; Jane Koroma received the $750 Goldie Locke Scholarship for having the highest-grade point average of all other African American seniors in the Garland ISD. The remaining six seniors each received a $500 scholarship for having the highest-grade point average of other African American se-

Back to School: Ready to Read?
By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson For many students in District 30, the first few weeks of school are met with much enthusiasm and high expectations to succeed in the class room setting. While students are prepared physically to go to school, many students are not prepared on a reading level. Nationwide, 34 percent of children in kindergarten lack the basic language skills needed to learn how to read;
in fourth grade, 65 percent of children are reading below grade level; and only 37 percent of high schoolers graduate at or above reading proficiency. The American Academy of Pediatrics announced in 2014 that it recommended that parents read aloud to infants from birth, noting that a vital part of brain development occurs within the first three years of a child’s life. Reading to children from birth to age three will enhance vocabulary and communication skills. Unfortunately, an income gap exists within child literacy. By age three, children of higher-income parents have an advantage over children of lower-income parents because they have heard more words at home.
About 60 percent of children from families with incomes over 400 percent of
the federal poverty level are read to daily while only one third of children from fami-
lies with incomes below the federal poverty line are read to daily. According to Reading is Fundamental, two out of three children living in poverty have no books to call their own. Having few to no books in the home is a clear disadvantage when entering school. This hinders a child’s ability to prepare for school and stay on track. One of the programs I helped spearhead, the Innovative Approaches to Literacy, which is now part of the Every Student Succeeds Act, help to bring different partnerships together to promote student literacy from birth through high school. The Innovative Approaches to Literacy program awards
grants to nonprofit organizations and school districts like the grant awarded to the Texas Can Academies in Dallas and Fort Worth, which distributes free books and provide collaborations between local librarians and classroom teachers. While programs like Innovative Approaches to Literacy are valuable in the Dallas community, Texas, and across the nation, we must also take matters into our own hands. Parental engagement is key in any child’s development. There are many public libraries throughout District 30 that provide tools, workshops and resources for parents and children to improve their literacy and ease accessibility to reading materials.

HALL: Buck the NFL!
QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall This missive will cost friends and increase my list of enemies, but akin to the Geto Boys; I would rather be hated for what I am than loved for what I’m not. Some of the most intentionally thoughtful parents in America happen to be the guardians of mixed-raced children. Specifically, my White female friend, who bore a blue-eyed daughter of ebony hue, was relentless in creating a diverse and resilient cocoon. Every deed and duty was deliberate, thoughtful and culturally calculated. White parents who accept the responsibility of raising mixed-race children have a lot to contend with. Racists abhor “Niggers and Nigger lovers.
Any comprehensive or generational survey of American history will bear that out. When you read Colin Kaepernick’s biography, you realize that he too is a mixedrace child, adopted and raised by conscientious White parents who were cautious and cognizant of the challenges he inherited at birth. Sadly, there are few people who are genuinely empathetic. Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III of Dallas says that empathy literally requires wearing someone else’s skin. Empathy is the immersion of mind, body and spirit into the life and social circumstances of another. I’m not surprised that some White folks rebuke Colin, but for Blacks to ignore his predicament is criminal.
When breakfast menu subjects are broached, the chicken (egg) gets a little uneasy, but the pig (bacon) drafts a will. Similarly, Black folks are much more sensitive than Whites to racism, police brutality and to some degree; protests. If President Louis Farrakhan was spewing hate against non- Blacks, White folks would find empathy for
itage. Colin has been “Whiteballed and is unemployed for taking a stand. However, it’s obviously OK for NFL players to assault women and abuse drugs. This hypocritical practice of overlooking domestic abuse and other crimes for profit is not new. The NFL’s first Black gridiron superstar Jim Brown has come out against Colin, but
how most non-Whites loathe Donald Trump. That being said, how dare the NFL collude and conspire against Kaepernick, who was compelled to protest the perilous plight of half of his her-
peep this 50-year-old factoid that appeared on Cleveland. com in 2014. “The Hall of Famer has long been dogged by accusations that he physically abused women. Perhaps the most
notorious charge came after his football career, in 1968, when police say Jim Brown threw model Eva Bohn-Chin off the second-floor balcony of his Los Angeles home. Charges against Brown were dropped after BohnChin, who was found on the ground below the balcony, insisted she slipped. Brown did pay a small fine for hitting a deputy sheriff investigating the incident.â€? Three years later Jim Brown was inducted into the Hall of Fame, an honor that will likely elude Kaepernick. The fact that any African-American, whether “Blue-blackâ€?, mulatto, quadroon or octoroon, would have the nerve to assert his independence amidst a colony of contracted slaves was too much for the league to bear. So‌â€?Buckâ€? the NFL. I wouldn’t give a damn if I never saw another professional football game in my life. Buck Dallas Cowboy owner Jerry
Jones and the docile Negroes he brags won’t be tainted by uppity Coloreds like Kaepernick. To my brothers who can’t give up the habit... from this point on I won’t bother you if you don’t bother me. I don’t want to play a football pot, fantasy football, watch highlights and nothing else. America’s race wars have no sidelines or end zones. Malcolm X eventually regretted castigating Martin King. The Minister joked that King was fighting for the Negroes’ right to sit next to White folks on the toilet. That was harsh, but neither of these Freedom Fighters died so that we could have the dignity of our race flushed down the septic tanks of America capitalism in 2017. Buck the NFL Brougham...I double dog dare you!!! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journalist. John Wiley Price is a Dallas County (TX) Commissioner.
MALVEAUX: OBAMA’S LAST YEAR BROUGHT ECONOMIC SUCCESS The income, poverty and health insurance data released by the Census Bureau on September 13 confirm what many already knew. President Obama’s last year was one of economic improvement for many individuals. The median income rose from $57,230 in 2015 to $59,039 in 2016, an increase of 3.2 percent. Black income rose 5.4 percent, from $37, 364 in 2015 to $39,400 in 2016, while white income rose from $63, 745 to $65,041, an increase of two percent. The income gap narrowed very slightly, with African Americans having 58 percent of white earnings in 2015 and 60 percent of white earnings in 2016. This income ratio typically hovers around 60 percent, and this situation has not improved since 1967! Despite an absolute improvement in incomes, the racial income disparity remains. Fewer than one in ten whites earned less than $15,000 per year, compared to 20 percent of African Amer-
icans at that low earning level. While 18 percent of whites earned less than $25,000 a year, fully one-third of African Americans earned so little. At the same time, while 7.4 percent of whites earned more than $200,000 a year, only 2.8 percent of African Americans had similarly high earnings. At the top, there was significant improvement for African Americans – we didn’t cross the 1 percent line on high earning until 1997, and now our percentage has more than doubled. Still, it would take hundreds of years, at the rate we are going, to close the gap with whites. With incomes as low as they are, it is unsurprising to find African Americans more heavily represented among the poor than whites are, but again, President Obama’s last year in office saw a real drop in the poverty level. The poverty rate dropped from 13.5 percent in 2015 to 12.7 percent in 2016, and the Black poverty rate dropped from 24.1 percent to 22.0 percent. There were 800,000 fewer
The Last Word by Dr. Julianne Malveaux
African Americans in poverty in 2016 than in 2015. That’s good news! Child poverty was also overwhelming. With 15.1 percent of white children living in poverty there were nearly twice as many Black children living in poverty at 29.5 percent. Among elders, 8 percent of white seniors were poor, compared to 18.5 percent of African American seniors. And when Black women headed households, 34.2 percent of those households lived in poverty. While these numbers make a clear case that President Obama improved the situation for all Americans, it is also clear that his unwillingness or inability to target programs toward the African American poor maintained the size of the income gap, and maintained the fact that African
Americans experience twice as much poverty as whites, earning only 60 percent of the incomes that whites do. This gap will not be closed unless there is some intervention, some form of reparations, or some special program that will empower African Americans. If that didn’t happen in the Obama administration, it is unlikely to happen in this one! President Obama’s singular success, of course, was health care. More than 93 percent of whites, 92 percent of Asian Americans, 89.5 percent of African Americans and 84 percent of Hispanics had health care in 2016, continuing an upward trend that began in 2011 with the introduction of Obamacare. Of course, Republicans have promised to “repeal and replace the Affordable Care
Act. They have been unsuccessful because so many use and like the program, even with it flaws. The program should be tweaked, but not replaced, but we’ll see what happens in coming months. Despite improvements in income data, too many Americans aren’t feeling the improvements. That’s how 45 was able to manipulate people into believing that they were worse off than they had ever been, and that he was going to improve their quality of life. To be sure, while the unemployment rate is way down, there are also people sitting on the sidelines of the labor force. Raises seem to be coming, but quite slowly, and a 3.2 percent increase in income, after several years of declining income, seems not to be enough. Additionally, there are millions of millennials who came of age during the recession, having spent years marginally employed, and are shouldering the burden of high student loans. Small increases in income don’t make
these folks feel flush. Many still feel that they are just getting by. Knowing 45, he will crow about these numbers, though he truly cannot take any responsibility for them. This data is 2016 data, and the improvement here can be solely attributed to President Obama. The proof of 45’s pudding will come next year, when 2017 data are reported. Will we be better off with the repeal of the Affordable Care Act? Will incomes rise or fall under 45’s leadership? What will happen with poverty in an administration that has already taken actions to keep wages low? Will the Obama momentum come to a skidding halt because of 45’s policies? We’ll have to wait and see, but it is clear that 45 has already taken too many steps in the wrong direction. Julianne Malveaux is an economist, author, and Founder of Economic Education. The Courage of One Makes the Difference Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington
I have often thought, heard and to some degree concluded that Jesus, as was Paul, was killed because He dared to stand up and speak truth to power. He and many of His followers, convicted by their beliefs, professed and preached that the ruling religious law of the day, although large and in charge, was indeed corrupt and deserving of renunciation. In my office I have a poster which states, “One man with courage makes a majority. Until recently, I had never associated this powerful statement with the life and death and life of
Jesus Christ. But the courage of faith coupled with the commitment to act on that faith sometimes leaves you in the unenviable position of being alone. Have you ever found yourself so committed to a course of action, so positive in your convictions and your resolve, so steadfast in your purpose that nothing could change your mind or your behavior? I suppose we should all be so blessed to at least once in our lives to know that we know that we know. Can you now imagine Jesus, so sure, so confident, so right that even

Dick Gregory remembered by Black Press
The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) pauses to express our heartfelt condolences to the family of Dick Gregory, and to express forthrightly on the public record our profound and enduring love, respect, and salute to the living legacy of Dick Gregory. At no time in our 400-year travail and struggle for freedom, justice and equality have we been more blessed, as people, to have in our midst a freedom-fighting leader and visionary like our brother and comrade, Dick Gregory. Brother Gregory’s avant-garde leadership in civil rights, entertainment, journalism and entrepreneurial development will always be remembered and cherished by generations to come. African Americans, in fact all people
of African descent, as well as all people who have felt the cold, damp hands and wretchedness of racism and oppression will be forever inspired by the example of courage embodied

Seth Curry gives back to area youth By Dorothy J. Gentry Sports Editor
Seth Curry is cementing himself in the Metroplex as a fan favorite both on and off the court for the Dallas Mavericks. The 27-year-old combo point guard/shooting guard, who will begin his second year with the Mavs when training camp begins Tuesday, has spearheaded a slew of recent initiatives aimed at educating local youth on entrepreneurship, the importance of reading and computer literacy, and teaching the fundamentals of basketball. Earlier this month, the Seth Curry Foundation and the Dallas Mavericks launched the Venture – Entrepreneurial ExpeditionTM program, a new educational initiative designed to teach students to think entrepreneurially about business and life. The program’s digital course uses case studies, interactive business simulations and personal development activities to teach important basic business skills. Through the program students will develop a personalized plan for their individual business, along with a roadmap for academic and career success. The interactive program will serve hundreds of middle school students in the 2017 – 2018 school year and will be implemented in schools throughout the DFW Metroplex. The program was launched at KIPP Destiny Middle School, a charter school in KIPP Dallas-Fort Worth Public Schools. Jr. NBA Clinic The day after launching the Entrepreneurial program, Curry and the Mavs hosted

a free, special Jr. NBA Clinic with 100 kids from the DFW metroplex . The youth, all chosen personally by Curry based on financial need, the desire to learn how to play the game, and after writing an essay on why they wanted to participate, was held at the Mavs practice facility where the kids learned basic skills training around the fundamentals of basketball including shooting, ball handling, passing, lay-ups and more. The youth – both boys and girls – also toured the practice facility and were treated to lunch. The training was led by Mavs Basketball Academy coaches. Mavs Head Coach Rick Carlisle surprised the youth and showed up to talk with them about the importance of both education and athletics and to watch them play ball. Curry said he sees himself in the kids who attended the camp and just wanted to ensure they had a good time. “A lot of my memories from my childhood were coming to camps like this, having fun and learning,” he said. “Seeing these kids being here, around me, in the gym, it’s a blessing. I’m happy to be a part.” Curry said he felt a connection to each kid at the camp.
“I know a little bit about them from their stories and from reading their essays,” he said. “I’ve read what they’ve gone through and why they wanted to be there. I try to encourage them to think about school work, their academics first and foremost and use this as a reward.” The Jr. NBA is the league’s global youth basketball program, which aims to celebrate, grow and improve the game of basketball with boys and girls ages 6-14. As part of the Jr. NBA program, the Dallas Mavericks host free basketball clinics across North Texas with after-school programs and other nonprofit partners. Reading and Learning Center Curry’s Foundation and The Mavs Foundation, the private 501c(3) foundation arm of the Dallas Mavericks, also recently unveiled a new Reading & Learning Center and Computer Lab at Readers 2 Leaders facility in West Dallas. Students got the chance to break in the new space with advice and play time with Curry, representatives from his Foundation, the Mavs Foundation, Pro Players
Foundation and PPG/Glildden. Readers 2 Leader’s mission is to develop and grow the reading skills of underserved Dallas children ages 3-12 so that they succeed in school and graduate prepared to live productive lives. Through after-school, inschool and summer camp programs, Readers 2 Leaders reaches these students with the enrichment they need to become life-long readers, learners and leaders. At the Mavs Foundation we’ve focused on two things: one, building the basketball courts around the city to stimulate the physical activity and the second piece of that is the Reading and learning Centers and we feel real strongly that this piece is the base,” said Floyd Jahner, COO of the Dallas Mavericks and president of the Mavs Foundation. “Seth Curry is involved today and Curry made it through to play in the NBA and not many do. We read, get the advanced education, etc. and that’s how most make it. The Mavs Foundation donates the computers and come do the work in this community to help these kids come out and be successful. “And you hear the sto-
ries later on and it’s as much fun for us as it for the kids to see the computers and watch their faces,” he said. “I’ m proud of what the Mavs Foundation has done and that we are able to do it.” Over the past 21 years, the Mavs Foundation has built 35 safe Learn & Play spaces throughout the North Texas community, including 21 bas-

My husband and I were married for eight years. We have three boys. We are now divorced. He gets them almost every weekend and is very active in their lives. He has however been behind over the years with his child support payments but last year he paid on time every month. When he filed for his income tax return this year, he was told the money would go towards his back child support payments. He called, explained his situation and asked me if I would give him part of the money. The back child support check will come to me. I have not remarried, so no, I’m not working with a double
his best foot forward. Pops has met every payment, on time and that Sweetheart is a blessing. I’m sure at some point, something came up – maybe a flat tire, the need for a new suit or the electric bill was extra high one month ~ and he still came through for his boys. You and I both know as mothers, there’s always a bump in the road, without a doubt Here’s a shout out to the mamas who navigate them every day. Speaking of every day, your quandary reminds me of a quote I recently read from DMX. He said, “Every day, I get closer to God. Every day, my will to do the right thing gets stronger”. In that quote, I see a man who’s trying, just like your ex-husband, to be a better father. I’m not sure of your answer, but my answer is yes, I think
Because of your boys, the end of your marriage doesn’t have to be the end of a respectful relationship. Offer up a cup of compassion and a fist full of forgiveness. income. Again, I know what I’m thinking but I’d like to know what do you think I should do? Name withheld Dear Anonymous: If you’re a super fan of Ask Alma, and I think that you are, you know I’ve got a soft spot when it comes to our fathers. I don’t know if it’s because of the amazing relationship I had with my Dad, my incredible male friends who are fathers, or the fact that I have a remarkable son, who’s a father – there’s no two ways about it, fathers hold a special place in my heart. Specifically, when it comes to your ex, the boys Dad, his actions speak loud and hearty, he’s handling his business. He has buckled his boots and put
you should extend to him a few dollars. The amount ought to be of your choosing, since you do have a firsthand knowledge of what’s needed by the boys. Your ex is finally willing and able, offering to you and his sons, his best. Take the time to appreciate it and him, and return to him a portion of your best. Because of your boys, the end of your marriage doesn’t have to be the end of a respectful relationship. Offer up a cup of compassion and a fist full of forgiveness. Tenderheartedly handle your business mama, and while you’re extending that hand to be a blessing, hold it open just a minute, to receive one as well. Alma
