Okay, what’s the deal on these Men of Swagger?

In September, I began showcasing my Men of Swagger on Cheryl Smith Live! These are men who I think have it going on.

I don’t receive any input from ANYONE on my choices; although plenty of folks try to engage me in conversations about who should be on the list, I don’t respond at all.

These are men who I have identified and while I realize that we each have our “issues,” I also believe in redemption and atonement. So you may see a guy and say, “but he did” or “he said.” And

my response to you would be, “you did” or “you said.”

Too often we hear about how the Black man is not doing this, that or the other.

While there are men who are not handling their business, there are plenty of men who are and I want to celebrate them.

My father was a great man and we had a great relationship. He was “my first love!” I think it is a wonderful situation when a daughter can feel that way about her father. There are far too many women walking around, falling into the September 1 - December 31 -- I am picking the men I think have serious swagger. These men are intelligent, strong, sharp, fierce, competitive, charismatic, spiritual, hard, caring, handsome, smooth, creative, energetic and so much more!

Election time - It’s sooner than you think ARE YOU READY TO VOTE? DALLAS - One year and one month sounds like a long time, but we’re inside 13 months before Americans return to the polls for the 2012 Presidential Elections.

But there’s a few matters of business to tend to before that time and the question is, "ARE YOU READY TO VOTE?" Actually, your first opportunity to flex your political muscles comes in less than a month.

That’s when Texas voters have the opportunity to go to the polls on November 8 to weigh their opinions on 10 proposed a m e n d m e n t s t o t h e Te x a s Constitution that are required companions to bills passed during this year’s legislative session.

Dallas County voters - as well as those across the state - will also be able to decide on local issues. For example, Cedar Hill voters can show their support for public schools and the cities of Sunnyvale and Glenn Heights also have additional items that will appear on the ballot.

I ask again, ARE YOU READY TO VOTE? I do so to prepare you for possible changes to voter eligibility due to new laws on

Under the new state law, there are seven forms of photo identification that will allow you to cast your all important ballot; a Texas driver's license or Texas ID card, a U.S. military ID, a U.S.

certificate was created for persons who cannot afford or do not have the other acceptable forms of identification. A voter certificate issued to a senior 70 years or older does not expire. Otherwise, all documents must be current or not have expired for more than 60 days to be eligible.

Seniors who do not hold or cannot afford a Texas driver's license, state-ID or other eligible document may obtain the free voter certificate. It does not expire if issued to a person 70 years or older. Texas is one of seven states to have passed new

laws this year that will require a form of photo ID to vote. Similar legislation was introduced in 27 other states in 2011.

The new law could also cause problems for potential voters whose names have changed since they last voted. For instance ladies, if you have married, un-married (divorced), hyphenated or otherwise changed your legal name since you last voted, your information may not match that appearing on voter rolls and your eligibility could be challenged. Student photo IDs are also no longer acceptable.

The November Constitutional Amendment Election is the first of what will be a year-long season of politics and ballots. Next come the March 6 primary elections followed by possible run off and local elections in May. These of course, lead up to your chance to have a role in making U.S. h i s t o r y. D o n ’ t w a i t u n t i l November 6, 2012 to find out that you will be an observer of - rather than a participant in - democracy.

Renda McGee is a native of Forrest City, Arkansas. She began her career with Social Security Administration in 1996 as a Service Representative in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma field office.

She has held the positions of Claims Representative in the Tulsa, Oklahoma field office and Operations Supervisor in both the Muskogee, Oklahoma and Dallas North, Texas field offices.In February 2011, Renda was selected as the District Manager of the Dallas Oak Cliff Social Security Administration.

Renda holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Spanish from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas.

Married to Carl McGee and they have three sons Carl Jr. and twins Carol & Carel, Renda is a member of the Concord Church in Dallas, TX.

Dallas County DA recognized by American Bar Association S

Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins will receive the American Bar Association (ABA) Criminal Justice Section Norm Maleng Minister of Justice Award on October 28, 2011, during its fall meeting in Washington, DC. The award is bestowed on a prosecutor who embodies the principles spelled out in the ABA Standards for Criminal Justice, Prosecution Function particularly that “the duty of the prosecutor is to seek justice, not merely to convict.”

Norm Maleng, for whom the award was named, served as the King County (Seattle, WA) Prosecutor from 1978 until his death in 2007.

“I am honored and humbled to receive such a distinguished award. For the American Bar Association to recognize both the progress we have made over the past four and a half years to ensure justice is served and our commitment to always do the right thing, even when it is not popular, demonstrates we are moving criminal prosecution in Dallas County, Texas, in the right direction,” said Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins.

ABA Criminal Justice Section Chair Bruce Green expressed his overwhelming support for Mr. Watkins’ selection to receive the award. “The ABA Criminal Justice Section is privileged to award our Norm Maleng Minister of Justice Award to District Attorney Craig Watkins,” said Green. “Since 2007, Watkins through his leadership and entire staff has devoted his office to the pursuit of justice.

In tough economic times, he has prioritized prosecuting the most serious wrongdoers, and he has worked to address the underlying cause of criminal conduct.

Mr. Watkins has built bridges to the community and has exemplified the highest ethical standards. He is well deserving of this award, our highest recognition for prosecutors,” Green added.
