Suspect arrested in Jazmine Barnes’ Killing By Sheryl Estrada

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement early Sunday that homicide investigators have filed a capital murder charge against Eric Black Jr., 20, for the shooting death of 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes in Texas. “Investigators identified Black as a suspect based on a tip, states the sheriff’s office. “Subsequent investigation revealed evidence that corroborated the tip, and Black was taken into custody in East Harris County without incident. Black then admitted to taking part in the shooting. A second man, Larry Woodruffe, 24, has also been taken into custody, Lee Merritt, the Barnes family’s lawyer, said. According to Merritt, Woodruffe is “believed to be the shooter. The shooting occurred when Jazmine’s mother was driving Jazmine and her three sisters southbound on the East Sam Houston Parkway feeder road near Wallisville Road on Dec. 30. The shooter opened fire into their car. “At this time, investigators do not believe Jazmine’s family was the intended target of the shooting, and that they were possibly shot as a result of mistaken identity,

the sheriff’s office said. Both suspects in custody are Black, but on Thursday, police released a sketch of the suspected shooter who Jazmine Barnes was believed to be a white man in his 30s or 40s. Merritt addressed the shooter’s description in an Instagram post on Sunday: “Larry Woodruffe doesn’t fit the description offered by the 4 different witness statements or composite sketch. Accordingly, this tip was difficult to believe. Assuming the confession elicited is reliable — it is possible the previously identified suspect seen fleeing by several independent witnesses was a bystander attempting to escape the shooting. “To observers, however, he appeared to be the shooter himself. More information will have to be drawn out before there is a conviction. Activist Shaun King, who offered a reward for the arrest of the perpetrator, said, on Twitter, that he provided the sheriff’s office a tip leading to the men involved.

MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith

Publisher

Tomorrow is here. Let’s not wait another day. We’ve heard others comment too often,“I just saw them yesterday. We just talked last night. I thought she/ he would be here forever.” Which brings me to my truth. I sat in the funeral home in Crawfordville, GA, looking at the body that housed my father. I spoke those words to him, as if I expected him to respond, “Daddy, I thought you would be here forever. I

never imagined life without you.” He went to the doctor’s office regularly and once he learned the perils of smoking he stopped immediately. He ate healthy foods, pretty much I guess. But he did, much to my chagrin, also eat pork. My father was big on having insurance, getting an education, being an entrepreneur, buying land, being involved in your community and life,

having a spiritual foundation (although he didn’t suffer certain “negro preachers), and helping others. Also, Daddy didn’t take no stuff! Because he knew better. And if you don’t know better, or want to know better, so you can do better, come out to the Realizing the Dream Healthy Living Expo on January 21 at the Museum. See pages 7-10. lenges revolved around the unhealthy atmosphere in Washington, D.C., and that’s not likely to change. But many of the challenges, joys, and sorrows were also personal. One of them was the loss of Robby Gregg, Jr., a diversity expert and consultant at Cook Ross, a diversity and inclusion firm in the DC area that was founded by my dear friend Howard Ross. Robby died unexpectedly at 58, just a week before Christmas. Alarmed at not having heard from him, a friend went to his home and found him gone. Unless you are part of the D&I community (as diversity experts call themselves), connected to Wake Forest University (Robby was a 1983 graduate), or part of the vast Maya Angelou extended family (Robby was one of Dr. Maya’s students at Wake, and an ardent supporter of the Maya Angelou school in Washington, D.C.), you probably wouldn’t know Robby. He was a man worth knowing.

When I interviewed Howard a few weeks ago, he threw out the suggestion of lunching with those with whom I have profound disagreements. I scoffed at it, considering it an utter waste of time in many cases. The day after our interview, Robby Gregg, Jr. was found dead, and I wondered if there was a message in his passing for me. After all, had we not had that delightful long lunch, my friend and I would not have had rapprochement. So, in memory of and in tribute to Robby and, equally importantly, to do my part in exploring the possibility of more civility in our discourse, I’m challenging myself to do more listening. And I’ll promise an opponent at least three minutes of uninterrupted time, as long as I’m not on the air. I’m challenging you to do the same. Delivering a powerful message, Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty features more than 300 objects, works of art, documents and artifacts unearthed at the storied plantation. Dallas is the first city to host the updated touring exhibition, which features new items never seen outside of Monticello. The exhibition also includes a special feature on Sally Hemmings, one of the most famous African American women in American history. As an enslaved woman at the age of 16, Hemings negotiated with one of the most powerful men in the nation, ensuring she would receive “extraordinary privileges” and achieve freedom for her children. Jefferson fathered at least six children

How do we view such contradictory posturing through a 21st century lens? I urge people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds to come and discover the other side of American History.” Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty is organized by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello and the African American Museum, Dallas in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities and in cooperation with the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs and VisitDallas. QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

Gandhi and King – A Perfect Love! “The day the power of love overrules the love of power, the world will know peace!” –Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi Martin Luther King recalled with great adulation how he first learned of the man and spirit we know as Mahatma Gandhi. Many of the best quotes of Dr. King were founded in the words, deeds, and death of India’s patron saint and Martin’s civil rights hero. For the people of India, Mahatma was among the highest forms of flattery for a fellow human. Mahatma translates as” The Great Soul.” Nelson Mandela enjoyed a similar status among the South African people. “Madiba” was the grand title of respect that Mandela earned. Meanwhile, in these “Yet to be United States,” we allow Dr. King and the sacrifices he wrought to be reduced far below his value as a man, a spirit and a force. We allow people to call Dr. King, “The Dreamer;” a canonized term of revisionist American history, that marginalizes the depth and density of his resolve for peace and equality. But that’s another rant for a different day. Anyway… As a student, King learned of Gandhi through a sermon messaged by the legendary Dr. Mordecai Johnson. King was in seminary, but in every phase of his life he had a burning for learning. Those who delve lightly into history often assume that Gandhi served as a living mentor to King. However, King and Gandhi never met. Their paths never crossed. Gandhi was assassinated in 1948. King was assassinated for

the same crime and reason, exactly 20 years later in 1968. Each of them was killed for their efforts to end White Supremacy and racial injustice. Gandhi fought British colonization, King fought Jim Crow and the remnants of chattel slavery; both were gunned down. Mahatma Gandhi, like King, spoke truth to power and brought an argument for peaceful insurrection that was solemn, sophisticated and sellable. The truth, they say; cuts like a twoedged sword. Gandhi and King delivered truths that slew their oppressors. King learned and was in concert

with the “Seven Deadly Sins,” as described by Mahatma Gandhi. They were sins in 1948 and humankind is decaying from the same misdeeds to this very day. Gandhi’s list of sins is as much moral as theological. In the eyes of both men, it is sinful to have, “Wealth without work, Pleasure without conscience, Science without humanity, Knowledge without character, Politics without principle, Commerce without morality and Worship without sacrifice.” This is Gandhi/King 101, so it’s only right that the aforementioned sins are explained and placed in the context of our present state as Americans and

as consumers of The Creator’s larger economy. “Wealth without work” – would include stars like the Kardashians. There is an aggregation of millionaires with no discernable talent or skills who are famous for being famous. “Pleasure without conscience,” sounds like Jerry Jones and the top 1%. How can you build a 375-foot yacht while living in a city with a 23% child poverty rate? The best example of “Science without humanity” is social media. Americans are beasts on Facebook and Twitter, and even the Russians know that! “Knowledge without character” shows up when your President supposedly graduates from a (poison) Ivy League School and lacks any and all social graces to be considered a decent reprobate. The art of “Politics without principles” is on full display right now with the Republican Party. #nogonads “Commerce without morality;” 10 years ago it would have been WalMart, but Amazon is the ranking member in that club today. “Worship without sacrifice” can be seen every Sunday morning when millions of “Good Samaritans” leave church, drive past fallen travelers and never even think of stopping. King talked in abundance on the debilitating power of power and how to disarm it. Each of the men loved the oppressed and the oppressor well enough to teach the concepts of non-violence and passive resistance. Hate killed them both, but they lectured on the universal benefits of perfect love! “I have decided to stick to love...Hate is too great a burden to bear.” - MLK Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journalist.

The State of Our Union From the Capitol By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

On January 29th President Donald J. Trump will stand before a joint session of Congress, members of the United States Supreme Court, members of his cabinet and invited guests to deliver his State of the Union Address. The televised remarks will be witnessed and evaluated by millions of Americans, and by multitudes throughout the world. I have never been, nor aspire to be, a fortune teller, and am unable to predict the substance of the president’s remarks. Yet, I am able to say that the state of our union at

the moment is fractured, and in need of herculean repair. As a nation we find ourselves in an untenable and sad predicament. We are in the midst of a government shutdown in which some federal employees are working without being paid, and others are simply being asked to stay at home. The president seems immune to their realities, their cries of pain and anguish. Many of those affected are unable to pay their mortgages, their rents, their car notes or fees for childcare. It is as if they

do not exist. This crisis that we are facing is not simply about a wall. It is the result of a campaign promise that the president made during the 2016 campaign. His recalcitrance surfaced when extremely partisan members of the media and others informed him that he had to insist on the construction of a wall on the nation’s Southern border if he wanted their support for a 2020 reelection effort. The State of the Union Address, mandated by the U.S. Constitution, has in the past been used by presidents to present the nation with messages laced with hope, vision and plans designed to lead to prosperity and wholeness for our nation, and its people. One of the greatest such ad-

dresses was given by former President Lyndon B. Johnson who in his annual message spoke of a nation in which all people had an equal place, were treated fairly, with respect and decency. One writer, after listening to the president’s remarks, proclaimed that he “aimed high.” Now more than ever, as our nation lies divided and uncertain, we need leaders who aim high, who are willing to work in a bi-partisan manner for the good of our country and not simply for the next election cycle. All of us, including elected officials, need to look to the words and deeds of President Johnson as he aimed high. It is my hope that the current occupant of the White House will join us as we do so!

The Upside

THE UPSIDE is a remake of a French film and it’s based on the true story of a wealthy quadriplegic and his caregiver. The first time I saw the film, and I’ve seen it many times since, I couldn’t help but imagine what two American actors could play the parts in an English version of the film. The actors end up being the comedic superstar, Kevin Hart, and Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad. On camera together the two have great chemistry. Nicole Kidman is also in the movie as Phillip’s (Cranston) executive assistant. She’s a stoggy Harvard graduate and she runs the day to day affairs of the house. She immediately takes a disliking to Dell (Hart) who was nev-

er looking for a job. He just needed three signatures for his parole officer to show he’s been looking for work. Judging the film on its own merit, it is a very funny and tender story about two men from different backgrounds who become friends. Phillip has a love for opera, which Dell learns to appreciate and Dell tries to get Phillip to play some of his music from his favorite artist, Aretha Franklin. Together the two men learn a lot about the worlds that the men come from. The movie reminds me a lot of the award-winning movie Green Book, which is my favorite movie of 2018. Hart takes it to another level in THE UPSIDE with the best performance of his career. Of course, he’s funny, but he also shows another side of his character who spent time with his own

father in prison. Now he wants to do better for his son and be a more responsible husband to his wife, who’s never received any financial help from Dell. Amazingly, Hart shows some real skills as an actor. Hopefully, we’ll see more quality roles for Hart in the future. Also, I thought there were a few minor flaws in the film. Phillip meets a woman in person that he’s only been writing letters to previously. That storyline seemed a bit incomplete. And other than her role as the head of the house, they don’t go into much the depth of Kidman’s character. In the French version of the movie, she was a lesbian but it seems like in the “America-

nized” version of the film the movie company obviously wanted a PG-13 version so that part is completely left out. I enjoyed the early character development of the two lead actors, but it seemed to me that the movie could have done better showing the lives of the two main female characters. Perhaps they just ran out of time. The movie has a run time of just over 2 hours and on my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” I rate THE UPSIDE a JUMBO!

Dealing with an absentee mother

Hi, Alma, The mom of one of my 10-year-old daughter’s friends confided in me that her husband had been physically and verbally abusive to her several times. (Unfortunately, as many people do in this situation, she did not press charges because she didn’t want her kids to have to deal with the fallout.) The husband and wife are separated now. My daughter’s friend invited her to a birthday party at her dad’s new house. The husband has been polite to me and my child, but I’m uncomfortable with the situation, particularly since I have some experience with an abusive partner who was a “nice person” to outsiders. I’m planning to tell my daughter she can’t go (but not tell her the real reason). What do you think? I’ve pointed the mom to some resources on domestic violence and counseling. Here’s hoping she can heal. Signed, Cautious Reisterstown, Md.

Dear Cautious, I see your red light earrings flashing, and I can understand why, but you’re wrong on this one. I say you should let your daughter go. Here’s why: Your daughter is 10. It’s a birthday party. Her best friend’s father has nev-

er hurt his own daughter or yours. If he had, I suspect his wife would not allow him to host a birthday party. You said yourself that the BFF’s father has been polite to you and your daughter. You also said you’re familiar with abusers being “a nice person to outsiders.” So why not let your daughter go? She was not the only one invited to the party. I’m sure other adults (parents and

23

family members) will be there. A part of me wonders if you think that by allowing your daughter to attend you would be giving approval to the father’s behavior. Don’t worry; that’s not so. Unless her mom asked you not to participate, I just can’t come up with a good reason for your daughter not to go. This isn’t a sleepover. Don’t make this a grown-up issue for your daughter. I understand that you and the other mother have bonded over shared sorrows, but you can’t let the pain and suffering of your marriages overshadow a very fun time and lifelong memory for your daughters. Joint custody arrangements, especially after a spiteful split, can be extremely exasperating. It’s horribly difficult to move past the hurtful events and heartbreaking history you have with an ex-partner. The key is to put your child first. Alma

Do you know this man?

POLICE have not apprehended “Pookie” the serial rapist. We know he has attacked members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and there is a $5,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers.

HE IS A SERIAL RAPIST

He targeted members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. but this is more than about a sorority. We’re talking about a community. Come on PEOPLE! Don’t you CARE? Will it matter when it is your sister, mother, aunt or grandmother or maybe YOU?
