JOHNSON: What’s the Next Step after the Women’s March? Our nation has been wounded recently. But out of the wounds came something beautiful--millions of women, men, and children marched across the nation and worldwide on January 20th in support of the Women’s Movement that has blossomed after the election. Everyone gathered in solidarity and were passionate in taking to the streets to profess their attitudes about respecting the rights of women, acknowledging that they do not fear immigrants but welcome a conversation to include them in our democracy, protecting our planet and the need to uphold justice and equality for all Americans whether Black, Latino, Asian, or in the LGBTQ community. The Women’s March was so enormous it transformed into a movement, but we must hold this momentum. Having been in politics for a long time, I have witnessed many become emotionally defeated. However, I want our younger generations to know that their passion cannot be quelled when it gets hard—in fact, it should be stoked. It is imperative that everyone un-

derstands the era we are entering and not take for granted the tireless hard work being done by new and seasoned activists in their local communities to protect the rights of all Americans and bring awareness to issues that gravely impact our lives. What we witnessed Saturday was a demonstration of people saying enough is enough; no longer will they sit aside to watch their rights be taken from right under them. The people have proclaimed they are expectant of change and will demand it by organizing. Keep doing it. We might be witnessing one of the next best moments in history. When people unite together the results of a victory allow a shifting of policies. So my hope is that this protest foreshadows that people will not give up easily during the uphill battle to fight for their rights and will be persistent in organizing. My message to those who have
been encouraged and motivated by the actions of the previous demonstration is to be committed to peace, justice and equality for all. I also encourage you to get to know each other, sit around the table and discuss strategic ways how you can contribute to solving local issues and be involved in your community. You are also not in this alone! In order to have a more informed decision on an issue research local organizations that are working to combat the issues of women’s rights, civil rights, climate change, LGBTQ issues and more. You can also keep yourself informed of the issues that most concern you by checking the status of current legislation at www.congress.gov. Lastly, I always welcome the thoughts and concerns from you, the people, who have elected me to represent our district. May your voices continue to be loud and energy resilient as you organize across our state and country to see the change we all desire, prosperity of the American dream for all.

Before you what -- Know your why?
Dear Alma, I’ve been married for over 10 years and I’m very happy with my husband and two kids. My husband is very kind to me. My kids are very well by Alma Gill behaved and we have a good NNPA News Wire life. Columnist Alma Gill’s newsroom exBefore I got married I was perience spans more than in love with a man who said 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, News- he would never get married day and the Washington Post. Email questions to: and he didn’t want any kids. alwaysaskalma@gmail. I always hoped that he didn’t com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and mean that and would marry Twitter @almaaskalma. me but he never did. After more than a year and a half, we broke it off and I met my husband and got married. After I got married I would see him from time to time and he stayed in touch with my brother. When he and my brother would go out, he would always ask about me to see how I was doing. Recently my brother told me that he said he should have married me. I know you’re gonna think I’m crazy but I can’t stop thinking about him. I think we need to have a conversation because I have so much I want to say to him. I am trying to figure out my best option. I could email
him or reach out on Facebook. I was thinking I could ask him to meet me. How should I contact him in a way that’s the most respectful?
Name Withheld
Dear Name Withheld Excuse me, did you say respectful? What exactly is respectful about a married woman trying to reconnect with an ex? Because that’s basically all you’re trying to do. You wanna know how I know – cause I thought the same thing. And when I did, I asked my BFF Neasy about it. Yep, I wanted to contact my old “here he comes, I can’t breathe” high school crush named Poopie. Girl, it was a crush like no other, LOL. Like you, I was happily married, life was good, and all I wanted to do is let him know just how much I truly loved him. I did my best explaining and exasperating my heart and soul to Neasy and you know what she asked me: Why? Yep, just that simple. So now I’m asking you. Why? What if he misunderstands your actions? Is it worth your marriage, the love of your husband, the happiness of your children? If he wanted to marry you, he would have. Ain’t no truth in shoudda, cudda, wudda. Stop romanticizing over what you wish could have happen and live in
what is happening. What is happening is that you have a loving husband and father to your children. If circumstances were the other way around and your husband wanted to have a conversation with an ex, girl pleez, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. You’d be accusing him of all kinds of disrespect! Turn your twinkle toes towards what’s real and watch the video, live version of Whitney Houston, “All the Man I Need” and fall back in fabulous love with your husband. My favorite is the one with her in a beautiful red gown, Kirk Whalum’s on the sax. It’s the concert she did for our troops. Girl, rewind it two or three times if you need to. All the romance and attention you’re looking for is already living inside your home. You just need to breathe new life into it. Let that other man go, that conversation and action of sharing words, just isn’t worth the risk of losing your happy home. I never contacted Poopie and I’m perfectly fine with that decision. Give it some time and you will be, too. If not, go find a BFF you can confide in, who’ll keep you on track named Neasy!

Ignorance of the Law Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington
I know I’ve started one or two columns off like this, but with all the legal maneuverings and trials going on, along with supposed “supreme” and final Supreme Court rulings being handed down, I thought I needed to revisit the law, at least from a Christian point of view. They tell me that ignorance of the law is not supposed to be an excuse for breaking the law. So if you ever find yourself in court, telling the judge that you didn’t know something, this will not by and of itself get you off the hook. However, depending on the peculiar circumstances, or the predisposition of the presiding judge, or the special talents of an astute lawyer, you might get lighter sentence, or in the case of police shootings, you might get off with an unjustified acquittal. I believe when it comes to your and my spiritual trials, Jesus represents the kind of sentencing that only occurs in Family Court. The more I read scripture, the more I understand the wonderful relationship we have with the Almighty and the extraordinary power of His love for you and me, as demonstrated by our relationship with His only son, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It’s that blood relative thing that I’m referring to. If you would allow me to use two examples to illustrate my point let me give for your review 1.) Christ on the cross WWW.MYIMESSENGER.COM
and 2.) Simon Peter’s denial of Jesus as the cock crowed. All of us know that Peter did in fact deny Jesus as predicted. We also know that Peter “wept bitterly” because of it. Now one very good example of God’s great capacity to love His children is that this same Peter, once afraid and fearful for his own life, came to witness for the Lord with no fear about his new life whatsoever. It was Peter who, when the day of Pentecost came and he was filled with the Holy Spirit, spoke boldly and without fear of reprisal about the blood bought forgiveness of sins because of Christ’s death. He made us eternal members of God’s family. You see Jesus is our access. He is our spiritual emissary, our court appointed attorney, our intercessor to the Father, our ultimate Judge. Peter acknowledges this when he says, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” Acts 2:38. You see what the Holy Spirit did for Peter is what the Holy Spirit will do for you. The key is weeping bitterly. Peter had to first accept and acknowledge his shortcomings and yes, plead guilty. He had to empty himself to make room for the Holy Spirit. Those who recognize this and understand the premise, know firsthand that we are truly family members and weakly professed ignorance is but a poor excuse for one’s ultimate acceptance of Christ as Lord. You see God really does know that you know His laws.

In Luke 23:34, Jesus says “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.” From the Master’s own lips, we know even His captors and persecutors were in line for forgiveness. All anyone has to do is to plead honest ignorance, repent and turn to the Lord. From that point on, let Jesus plead your case. Ain’t that something? Blood bought forgiveness and no one, particularly the Judge, expects you to be perfect. The expectation is that you’ll be righteous in your acceptance of Jesus, be truthful to your lawyer and sincere in your repentance. That way He can represent you to the Father. Remember, your court appointed attorney has already won your case. But you do have to show up in court, listen and acknowledge that the charges against you are indeed true. Your Honor, yes I denied Him. Yes, I committed the sin. Yes, I was wrong. Yes, I am guilty as charged. And as Jesus told the adulteress, “go and sin no more.” He tells us that each and everyday. The key as always is that you and I hear and obey. May you come to understand that the shedding of Christ’s blood made you His blood brother, so to speak. And yes, that means God is your Father too. That means court convenes everyday in the living room. What a blessing! In the meantime, never live in ignorance again. Never deny what you know to be true. That’s just a lie. May God bless and keep you always.
