MY TRUTH
By Cheryl Smith
Publisher
Loving and Forgiving I was already prepared to focus this week’s column on the life of a dear friend, Mr. Dick Gregory, who transitioned last August. October 12, is his 86th birthday. I valued his friendship when he was alive and over the 24-plus years I knew him and got to know his beautiful wife, Lillian, and other family members. Then I arrived back in town from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University’s (FAMU) homecoming, to find that an old friend, a fellow Warrior, Doris Newsome had transitioned. I met Doris about 28 years ago and I always thought of her as a sweet, compassionate, fun-loving and supportive person. She was also really cute! She was a joy to be around. I knew Doris was battling cancer and it appeared she was victorious. I followed her on social media but life was happening over in my arena and we hadn’t been in touch in years. Which brings me to my truth. While at homecoming, I saw people I hadn’t seen in decades — some were friends and others had to remind me who they were. But it was all good. I had just exited FAMU’s convocation where the dynamic mayor

of Atlanta, my sorority sister Keisha Lance Bottoms was the keynoter and she was introduced by the first female drum major in the history of FAMU’s incomparable Marching 100 Band, Cori Bostic. I was celebrating my 40th anniversary as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, initiated through the Beta Alpha Chapter (BADST) where dentist extraordinaire, Dallas’ own Dr. Kera Collier celebrated her 15th; songbird, educator and former Lancaster, TX first-lady Tengemana Hill Knight (who has a birthday on the 20th) and Queen Bee Shewan Foster celebrated their 25th; and actress su-
preme Tkeyah Crystal Keymah celebrated her 35th. I also got to see local students Erika Johnson, my nephew Michael Black, Sidney Fleeks and Carrington Whigham; and super alum Royle King, who is the basileus of the Chi Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Then I saw her. We have not spoken in at least 30 years. But 40 years ago she was known as my little sister, around FAMU’s campus. I looked at her as she purchased items from a vendor. I could have easily turned away and went on my merry way as though I hadn’t seen her at all. Actually I stared at her for what seemed like five minutes but was probably only one. She never noticed. But during that time, I thought about Bishop T.D. Jakes, who talked about forgiveness in his bestselling book, “Let It Go: Forgive So You May Be Forgiven.” My little sister and I both felt wronged, last century, and we walked away from one another never to speak again. For all intense purposes, our bridge had been burned. Was it burned upon repair?

Doris Newsome
I don’t know if I could say that, but what I do know is that while she has crossed my mind several times, I never did anything to try and repair the relationship. Here was my time. While some forget what they were mad or upset about, I hadn’t. Was it important to me today, in 2018? Not at all. So I called out her name. She turned and looked. A big smile came across her face. She stopped her purchase and
came and gave me a hug. We talked with others around us and did a quick catch-up making a promise to reconnect, sharing contact information. As we took a final embrace, it was a long one. She told me she loved me and I told her I never stopped loving her. I’m back home now and she’s back in Atlanta (does everyone migrate to Atlanta?). I am going to call her once I get off deadline. Do I want to discuss what happened? Not really. If she wants to, I will though. What’s important is that we have an opportunity to right a wrong, to grow from our missteps. Bishop Jakes, said, ““Forgiveness does not exonerate the perpetrator. Forgiveness liberates the victim. It’s a gift you give yourself. It has less to do with what somebody else did as much as it does with your decision to move on with your life and not be continually victimized by rehearsing that issue or incident over and over again.” For me and my little sister, there is no room for the blame game. Instead I’m focusing on the future.

I’m sorry for the hurt I caused her and I forgive her for the hurt she caused me. We live, we grow, we evolve, and guess what? We die. As I live, grow and evolve, I want to make sure it all has significance. That’s what Dick Gregory and Doris Newsome did. Dick Gregory always asked, if you could be lovable. Forgiving helps. What are you doing?

Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson is our civil rights icon Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson turned 77 on October 8, 2018. Nobody has led a less storied life. He first took by Dr. Julianne Malveaux a public stand for civil rights when he was just a kid attempting to use the library in his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. His activism brought him to the attention of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and he served Dr. King for years before his assassination. From then, Rev. Jackson founded and led Operation Breadbasket, the Rainbow Coalition, and the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. Along the way he ran for President twice, gaining millions of multiracial votes and enough support to provide him with significant influence on Democratic platforms. One of the most that he empowered Minyon Moore, Yolanimportant things about others. When I listened da Caraway, Leah Rev. Jackson is the way to the “Colored Girls” – Daughtry and Donna

Brazile – speak their truth at the National Museum of African American History and Culture on October 1, I was reminded that Jackson has been pivotal in the lives of so many African American political figures. We can call the roll, and name names, but I won’t do that for fear of leaving someone out. What I will say is that there would be no President Barack Obama were there not a Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm who ran for President in 1972, nor a Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson, who ran for President in 1984 and 1988. J a c k s o n changed the way that African American people saw ourselves politically. Before him, we
I Messenger thought we could not make a difference. Because of him, we know that we can. Before him, we did not believe, in his words, that “the hands that picked peaches could pick Presidents”. Because of him Stacy Abrams is a possible winner (if we vote) as governor of Georgia; Andrew Gillum is a possible winner as governor of Florida, and unlikely candidates for Congress are poised to win. Thanks to Rev. Jesse Jackson, African American people claimed political audacity. We don’t have to wait our turn, follow the rules, and defer to the status quo. We can, like Ayanna S. Pressley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Lucy McBath, just buck up against the system and decide to do it our way. We don’t have to climb up the ladder of a broken party system, or wait for the blessing of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Instead, we can step
out when the time is right and the possibilities are there. Nearly 45 years after his historic run for President, Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson is engaged in multiple fights. He is fighting for social and economic justice, as he always has, ever since he defied library protocol and insisted on his right to have access to a taxpayer funded public library. He is fighting police brutality and the unnecessary murders of young black men like Chicago’s own LaQuan McDonald. He is fighting for young people to thrive in a nation that is biased against them. And he is in the personal fight of his life, fighting Parkinson’s disease as passionately as he fights injustice. Those of us who know Rev. well are excited by his good days, and concerned by the days that are not so good. We see the occasional slowed gait, shaking hands and slurred speech, but we also see the days when his rhe-

torical representation is as excellent as it ever was, and then we cheer. WE know that this is an indefatigable leader, one who will be no more slowed by a physical impediment than he has been by structural racism. And so we cheer whenever we see him stand up, whether he is standing on his own might, or whether he is assisted. We cheer the long and fruitful life of a civil rights icon who has made the world better for so many people, and opened the door for hundreds of African American politicians. I am writing this from a profoundly biased space. I met Rev. Jackson nearly 50 years ago, when I was an Essence Magazine intern supervised by Chicagoan Leniece Taylor, who was a friend of Rev. Jackson’s. I’ve been connected since then, as a delegate in 1984, a campaign surrogate in 1988, a family friend, and most recently President of PUSH/EXCEL the education arm of the Rainbow PUSH Co-

alition. I could not have been more delighted than when the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation bestowed Rev. Jesse and Mrs. Jacqueline Jackson a lifetime achievement award, both because they deserve it, but also because Mrs. Jackie doesn’t often get the recognition she should get as “the wind beneath his wings”. I’m biased, y’all, and that’s just that. Our icon, our leader, is celebrating another birthday, and that’s a great thing! He is fighting, as he always has, injustice; but he is also fighting Parkinson’s. And he is not yielding space in either fight. If you appreciate Rev. Jackson as much as I do, let him know! You can go to the Rainbow website, www. rainbowpush.org to send a note, or you can hit him up on Facebook. Let’s rain this brother down with birthday blessings for his 77 years of service..

The North Dallas Suburban Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, The Plano North Metroplex (TX) Chapter of The Links, Inc, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People- Garland Unit, will host a Candidates Forum, 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at Hamilton Park United Methodist Church, Christian Life Center, 11881 Schroeder Road, Dallas, Texas, 75243. The historic event is an initiative of three Collin, Denton and Dallas County local chapters focused on providing a nonpartisan public event designed to give voters an opportunity to hear from local candidates. Approximately nine groups of candidates ranging from the U.S. Senate, Texas Governor, to State Board of Education have been invited to participate in panel discussions. The catalyst for the forum was established to discuss issues that affect dayto-day lives that are decided at the local level and provide the importance of participating in all elections that affect
local communities. The intent is to highlight areas where voters can make the biggest impact. “This is a ground-breaking opportunity for Collin, Denton and Dallas County nonprofit organizations to partner in an effort to educate constituents on the importance of voting in local and statewide elections,” stated Paula Parker, President, Plano North Metroplex (TX) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. “We believe that the Candidates Forum provides an excellent environment for transparency in our political process," said Pamela D. Pujo, NDSA President. "The collaboration between our three organizations offers constituents the opportunity to hear from the candidates and to make knowledgeable decisions when exercising their right to vote.” “We are here to serve you - so that you can serve everywhere; therefore, come get informed so that you can perform.”, said Ricky McNeal, President, Garland Unit of the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a private, notfor-profit organization founded January 13, 1913 whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Its purpose is to address the needs in the community under its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust which includes Political Awareness and Involvement. The North Dallas Suburban Alumnae Chapter’s mission is to provide economic, political, educational, health, spiritual, and cultural awareness for North Dallas and its northern suburban communities. The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946. The programming of The Links, Incorporated has five facets which include Services to Youth, The Arts, National Trends and Services, International Trends and Services, and Health and Human Services. The programs are
implemented through strategies such as public information and education, economic development, and public policy campaigns. The Plano North Metroplex (TX) Chapter continues the National Organization’s strategies by focusing on issues that impact our local community, including voter registration, education, and mobilization. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) mission is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race- based discrimination. The Garland Unit of the NAACP was chartered on July 6, 1984. The principal objectives of the Association are to: 1) to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of all citizens; 2) to achieve equality of rights and eliminate race prejudice among citizens of the Unites States; 3) to seek enactment and enforcement of federal, state, and local laws securing civil rights.

Obama endorse Rep. Johnson The 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, has endorsed State Representative Eric Johnson (D-Dallas) for re-election to the Texas House of Representatives. Representative Johnson is one of only eleven candidates in Texas who have been endorsed by the former President and is the only current member of the Texas House to have received the endorsement. Former President Barack Obama released the following statement with the list of endorsed candidates: “Today, I’m proud to endorse even more Democratic candidates who aren’t just running against something, but for something—to ex-
pand opportunity for all of us and to restore d i g n i t y, honor, and compassion to public service. They deserve your vote,” stated President Obama. Representative Johnson released the following message to his supporters on Monday in response to receiving the endorsement: “It is an honor to be one of a select few Texas candidates to have received this endorsement. I appreciate your support over the past
eight years, and I am especially proud today that our hard work and commitment to progressive values has garnered the attention of such an inspirational, once-in-a-generation leader as President Barack Obama,” stated Representative Johnson. Representative Eric Johnson is running to represent District 100 in the Texas House of Representatives. He has represented the district since 2010 and currently serves on the following prominent com-
mittees: he is Vice Chair of the House Committee on Redistricting, a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, a member of the House Committee on Investments and Financial Services, and a member of the House Select Committee on State and Federal Power and Responsibility. Over the course of his legislative career, he has served on seventeen different committees and has held four vice chairmanships. Representative Johnson is currently running to become Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives. He is the only Democratic candidate for Speaker and if elected, he will be the first African American Speaker in Texas history.

Venom provides awesome special effects Venom is the new Marvel Comics movie that has everything you expect from a Stan Lee extravaganza, including a cameo appearance by Stan Lee. In Venom, Tom Hardy (from Dunkirk) plays an investigative TV news reporter who lets his journalistic curiosity get the best of him when he gets an assignment to do a "fluff piece" on a shady businessman who's involved in space exploration. His experiments with outer space lifeforms threaten the planet with superpowers that could take over Earth's human population. Riz Ahmed plays the corrupt businessman who puts his company's profits over the safety of the people of Earth. One of his spaceships crashes in Malaysia and one of the symbiotic creatures gets away and infects people until he travels all the way to San Francisco. Reporter Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy)
gets infected with the space creature and becomes Venom who, while far from a "hero", does heroic things in his battle with the wealthy business man's henchmen. The Venom special effects are amazing and the special effects fight scenes are amazing but the movie gets off to a slow start. The movie has a run time of 1 hour and 52 minutes and it seems like it would have been a better movie if it had been tightened up to about 90 minutes. It's ironic that the real bad guy in the movie is the wealthy businessman and not the alien. Venom has some pretty good dark humor; however, it's nowhere near the laughs in the Deadpool movies. This next round of Marvel movies is off to a slow start. How good future Marvel movies will remain to be seen. (Also, remember to stay until the end of the credits for a bonus scene.) On my "Hol-

QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall
WE WON’T FORGET! Keep your Powder Dry!
Maybe you heard old folks use this euphemism. Or just maybe you are a lover of written prose and literary classics. When I heard Commissioner John Wiley Price use it the other day, I was unsure so I did some research. According to phrases.org, a source I use from time to time to bandage my hemorrhaging ignorance, ‘Keep your powder dry” has its roots in Edward Hayes’ song, the “Ballads of Ireland.” “On a certain occasion, when his troops were about crossing a river to attack the enemy, he concluded an address, with these words ‘put your trust in God; but mind to keep your powder dry!” What it translates to is pretty close to the Boy Scout motto…Be Prepared! Keep your powder dry according to The Phrase Finder, means to “be prepared and save your resources until they are needed.” An article in the Dallas Morning Snooze; “Hispanic Voters aren’t likely to make much difference in key November races,” brought the purism full circle for me. The Texas minority population has been “holding our powder” since Obama I and II and now it is time to shoot. Blacks, Browns, Liberal Whites, women, voters 18-35 and err’body else we can find, need to vote in November. We have kept our “powder dry”
for far too damn long. What the article said without saying, was that if the Hispanic vote came out en masse, Beto O’Rourke could topple Ted Cruz. From that, you could extrapolate that a higher than normal turnout among Hispanics would produce Texas’ first Hispanic head-ofstate; (since before the Alamo at least) namely, Lupe Valdez. Our powder can add some Blues to the C&W Trump warbles out to in his segregated rallies. But you must understand the odds of changing Texas in order to change Texas. There are 254 counties in this state. In the 2016 Trump trampling of Blue Texas, the Republicans won 227 of those counties. Some of Texas’ larger counties are Blue, but 100,000 votes a few times can’t beat 10,000 votes a couple of hundred times. Texas is a rural state with a few urban areas, and Trump and the GOP will always win in rural areas. That won’t change for a few generations. So that means the 2018 midterm success rides on the new voters that Beto excited in small town Texas and the Dems over performing in places like Dallas and Travis County. Ain’t no Blue Wave just because you say so; you gotta use that powder. In 2016 Democrats got pissed without a plan and the end result has been a lengthy education into the con-
sequences of losing elections. In 2018 there are 48 early voting polling locations in Dallas County alone. Put your plan into action. Identify five folks you know who sometimes “forget” to vote and hound them to no end. Donate a dollar or two and commit to at least one act of volunteerism. This election is crucial. This is the last chance to vote straight party ticket, a plot by the GOP to suppress the vote. Without it, voting will take longer and create longer lines. Thousands of Texans registered online are being kicked out in mostly blue counties. The GOP can’t grow so they train their barrels on poor, minority and senior voters who they believe are inclined to vote Blue. But all hope is not lost. The sisters in Alabama kept their powder dry until it was time for war and saved the Senate from seating a possible pedophile. Progressives in Georgia and Florida fired their shots and are set to make history in those two gubernatorial campaigns. We can vote so heavy in Dallas that we get rid of Cruz, Abbott and a whole bunch of other useless Republicans. Keep your powder dry and shoot as soon as the polls open. And don’t put your trust in any God that doesn’t require you to do some work of your own!!! Vote! Early!! Please!!! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and
award-winning journalist.

And providers at Parkland Health & Hospital System are reminding Dallas County residents about of the importance of getting vaccinated for the flu. “It’s never too early or too late to get your flu vaccine,” said Pranavi Sreeramoju, MD, Chief of Infection Prevention at Parkland and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. “Although the season generally lasts from October through March, it can be different from year to year. Since it’s so unpredictable, we want to encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible.”
family members at high risk. Still, Dr. Sreeramoju said people often don’t get immunized because of a lack of information about vaccines or a fear based on misinformation and myths. “Some people believe getting the flu shot will make them sick, but that’s not the case,” she said. “After receiving the vaccine some patients may experience symptoms like a low-grade fever, but the symptoms usually go away within a day or two.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for all persons aged 6 months and older even when the virus has not changed from the previous season.
few simple steps could help reduce the risk of catching the flu: • Clean your hands often using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when coughing or sneezing to help keep from spreading germs • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth • Keep your distance from others who are sick • Stay home when you are sick to avoid passing the virus to others • Practice good health habits• Drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food • Get plenty of sleep and exercise • Manage your stress

All Smiles at the Jubilee Park Community Center
By Nina Garcia
The GuardianLife Insurance Company of America, in collaboration with the Children’s Health Fund, presented Guardians of the Smile, at Jubilee Park Community Center located in East Dallas. Guardians of the Smile is a kid-friendly, educational program that focuses on proper oral hygiene and offers this program to students despite any demographics. With a $1 million dollar commitment, Guardian and Children’s Health Fund will be sure to increase awareness to dental hygiene across the nation. The children in attendance at Jubilee Park Community Center (ages ranging from kinder to 2nd grade) were all too eager to learn, provided with the hands-on demonstrations on how to properly brush and floss teeth via giant sized props, inter-active games, which taught children how to make good food choices, and even art activities where children drew their
smiles to put on display. The children were surprised with a visit from the “Tooth
Guardian,” an animated character who encourages the children to be proactive in
healthy oral hygiene. Also, as part of this event, there was a ceremony to recognize an eminent person within the community who is also a long-term employee of the Jubilee Park Community Center. Maria Martha Ruiz, was honored for her role in making sure that all children and senior citizens within her neighborhood receive hearty, nutritious meals on a regular basis. She puts much time and effort into planning and preparing these meals and she does it with a smile! For these efforts, Sherrie M. Ross, Texas Dental Director, presented Ms. Ruiz with a special personalized apron from Guardian and a $10,000 check to help her continue her work. Hats off to GuardianLife Insurance Company and the Children’s Health Fund for reaching out to children everywhere to offer such pertinent services.

Do you know this man?
POLICE have not apprehended “Pookie” the serial rapist. We know he has attacked members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and there is a $5,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers.
HE IS A SERIAL RAPIST
He targeted members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. but this is more than about a sorority. We’re talking about a community. Come on PEOPLE! Don’t you CARE? Will it matter when it is your sister, mother, aunt or grandmother or maybe YOU?
