By Betheny Sargent Texas Metro News

Dallas, TX. -- Monday October 16, 2017 Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, Sr. Pastor of Friendship West Baptist Church and other notable Black alliances gathered together in front the Dallas Police Headquarters. The message was pure, simple and straight to the point, “We will not be silenced while others sit and stand by idly.” Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys owner has made less than supportive remarks about the players of the NFL and how he will not tolerate players being involved in politics, specifically utilizing the game time to demonstrate their stance on police brutality. Last year former NFL star Colin Kaepernick, demonstrated his frustration with police brutality with a peaceful

protest during game time by kneeling during the National Anthem. Since then Kaepernick has been blackballed from the NFL. Some players were not okay with this and have vocally expressed their disapproval of Kaepernicks’ silent protest on social media; while others in various sports have also kneeled. Over the past few months speculation of collusion between NFL owners and President Donald Trump has sparked fury and rage in the black communities across the country and now Jones has been added to the list of colluders as well. Several members of Black Dallas Communities addressed the media and talked of a protest to speak out about Jones’ comments and illustrate solidarity with

Colin Kaepernick and anyone else who exercised their First Amendment rights. “I’m boycotting the NFL this season, I started in September,” said Pastor Haynes, who was one of several members of the clergy in attendance. “I took offense to Jerry Jones’ ‘We stand or we won’t play’ statement because it was offensive to what America is supposed to be about. We are hoping this gets to him (Jerry Jones). “He violated what America is all about.” Pastor Haynes said he has been a long standing Cowboys fan for a while, when asked about his patronage of the team; he admitted that due to the comment, the Cowboy’s team has been taken away from him. “We are waiting on a response from Jerry Jones before we make our next move.”

When asked about how the faith-based community might perceive a Pastor getting involved in politics and his stance on separation between Church and State, he said that a second look at the bible is in order. He references the Prophet Amos who speaks among politicians. Other speakers including retired educator Shirley Ison-Newsome, veteran Ernest Walker and Next Generation Action Network’s Min. Dominique Alexander spoke of their frustration over the mandate handed down by Jones. Their messages were similar to Pastor Haynes as they expressed their feelings about a “plantation mentality.” Organizers said you can expect to hear future plans to address societal injustices.

Turning 50 and helping others

John Haigler and Bill Keyes are turning 50 this year and they decided to do something big. Sure they thought about having a party. When you work as hard as they do, why not? And just because you’re turning half a century does not mean that you don’t still have some moves on the dance floor. So the two began brainstorming and the result is bigger than they could have ever imagined. With three days of activities planned, the last weekend in October is expected to reach epic proportions for numerous reasons. When John and Bill began planning activities the first thing they did was “put some skin in the game.” “We sincerely wanted to begin our fifth decade of life with a set of signature events in support of four worthy charities that all have personal meaning to us,” said Keyes, adding that, “John and I are paying for the party and individually donating $2,500 in addition to what is being spent on all the events.” John said he wanted to be part of something big. “It’s not every day that two black men come together and say they want to do something like this. We’re self-made guys and we’ve got strong partners, strong sponsors and that’s what makes this so special and different.” Sure they were asking folks to come out and celebrate, while also giving back to some noteworthy charities and projects; but their ideas morphed into something bigger as the activities began creating a buzz for the beneficiaries as well. An avid golfer, John is a member of the Pro Duffers (Foster Kidd Chapter), a national nonprofit of golfers with 15 chapters that focus on “giving back to the community.” They’re talking about really partying for a purpose. The purpose is clear.

Raise at least $100,000 and put that money where you will immediately see the dividends; where the masses will benefit. UT Southwestern(UTSW) Cancer Center holds a special place in John’s heart. A major center for research, he attributes UTSW with saving his wife’s life. He says she went through chemotherapy and 33 rounds of radiation, and an intense but supportive process. John wants others to have the same care and treatment that his wife benefited from. There there’s the Zan Wesley Holmes Junior Community Outreach Center, named in honor of the pastor emeritus of St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church in Dallas, who served for 29 years. As the Center prepares for the launching of Frazier House in the Spring, citizens are anxiously awaiting this one-stop shop for self-empowerment, growth and development. The ZWHJCOC services young people and their families living in poverty, with an emphasis on South Dallas and the Southeastern sector of Dallas. It also helps that Bill just joined the trustee board and says it makes sense to support a center that will have such a positive impact on families, just as the church has through its various ministries. John and Bill know struggle. One the oldest of three boys raised by a single mom and the other aware of what happens when those who are in better positions don’t give back; it’s inspiring to hear them talk about filling the void and lifting as they climb. “Bill and I are extremely blessed,” he explained. “And we’re both passionate about reaching our $100,000 goal.” Having a quality education is very important to the two. Both college graduates, it was an obvious choice to choose educational organizations as beneficia-

ries. The Pro Duffers were already supporters of Dallas’ only HBCU, Paul Quinn College, but when you add in this 50th Birthday Celebration, the stakes have been raised significantly. The Pro Duffers adopted the school and through its inaugural fund they awarded 25, $1000 scholarships and recognized one of their members, Dan Mask, a 1963 graduate of Paul Quinn, who died last year. Then too, John’s wife is a graduate of an HBCU, Prairie View A&M University. And the last beneficiary, housed at that historic address of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Sunny South Dallas, is a school both men are familiar with because of the way students are nurtured and an environment conducive to learning is fostered, St. Philips’ School and Community Center, where Bill’s son attends. And the giving keeps happening as they join with the Pro Duffers organization to honor another organization with an impressive history of giving, the Mid-Cities Chapter of Links Inc. will receive the 2017 Community Service Award. The kickoff is the Thursday reception. On Friday Bill and John say it’s time to let your hair down. First there’s the golf tournament and later that night is the Old School All Black Party at the Sheraton Four Points at DFW North. Then on Saturday, there’s the Black Tie Gala. You can’t help but want the activities to be a success when you consider all who will benefit. John and Bill are businessmen, family men and community-minded. More importantly, they care. They are doing instead of talking about doing or talking about others who are doing. They are the true role models. It’s simple, according to this truly dynamic duo. Support the events. Spread the word.

The Lost Lesson: White Privilege QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

Or consider an alternate title; “Where have all the good men gone?” The alternate title came from the Daily Mail; August 2, 2017 edition. “These sassy, sophisticated, solvent women say they are struggling to find other halves that can measure up.” Where did all the real men go?

Most are in disbelief with the rural and Southern GOP, which has been thoroughly hoodwinked, sideswiped and pistol whipped by Donald Trump; a government subsidized billionaire carpetbagger, who emasculated GOP candidates on his rise to the Alt-Reich. Since then, Trump has been a constant source of embarrassment; leading his party and this nation toward an apocalyptic abyss. The GOP used be known for having more than its share of nut jobs, but the only set of nuts

This question haunted me soon after the recent Dallas City Council elections. Four Black men were elected to represent gerrymandered Black districts. Dallas districts were redrawn years ago to replace the “AtLarge system”, which kept minorities locked out nationally. For the first time in decades… no Black woman! No “Shero” like the iconic and historic Diane Ragsdale in Dallas? In 2017 there are no sisters to speak truth to power; just four “Brothers”, and three of them are highly suspect by my standards. This man shortage is not local; it’s gone viral. The crisis is not continental, it’s international and widespread. This shortage of gonads shows best in the weak-backed, pitiful excuses for men who don Republican lapel pins. The modern GOP is known for bullets and bluster. Redd Foxx who once joked: “Nine out of ten Cadillac owners agree…Them White folk’s sho’ make a fine car!!! Conversely, nine out of ten Democrats and Independents were convinced that the White Conservative Right was straight gangsta’!!! Trump has rendered these same Republicans as limp and pliable as his pompadour.

12

enough to quell Trump’s narcissistic noisiness. My understanding of politics is relatively deep and my IQ is twice whatever the Donald can muster. The reason Puerto Rico got cheap paper towels tossed at them like NBA free throws was because the Governor did not command the respect that Mayor Cruz vociferously demanded. Where are the good men? Where are the radical Cowboy players like Duane Thomas and Rodrigo Barnes? My hero, businessman and former Cowboy, Pettis Norman led a protest one day and was traded to Kansas City the next. “If that’s what it takes to be a man, then Kansas City here I come,” Norman said. Pettis channeled Fats Domino and Patrick Henry simultaneously. Where are all you men? Where is your manly pride? Where is the spirit of “Give me liberty or kill me MoFo? We talk a lot about the struggle, but women are holding the lion’s share of our banner to support Colin Kaepernick and to bridle Donald Trump. Hello Aunt Maxine and Jemele Hill!!

left appear to belong to a 71 year old, neurotic, misogynistic, White Supremacist. Yeah…I said it!! Just about the time it was obvious that the man shortage had spread from local to national, two girlfriends, “Irma and Maria”, unveiled a shortage of gonads in Puerto Rico. The world stood with the Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulin Cruz as she dissected a prime piece of Trump’s pompous ass and poetically parsed him on Twitter. However, the Governor, a male, felt compelled to kiss Trump’s posterior adequately

The late Jim Croce, (Google him) topped the charts with “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” and had a second hit in 1972 that celebrated male toughness; “You don’t mess around with Jim.” It went like this; “You don’t tug on Superman’s cape; you don’t spit into the wind; you don’t pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger and you don’t mess around with Jim… I don’t know what happened to Jim, but the latest marquee poster with a champion has Wonder Woman on it. Jim is gone and “real “men are in short supply.

Dad has lived his life, now it’s my time

Ask Alma:

Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter

Dear Alma: I am a 64 year-old divorced woman who lives with my father. Some years ago, when my marriage fell apart, and Mom was diagnosed with dementia, I moved back home to help my dad with her. I was also working part-time, so I couldn’t afford my own apartment. Two years ago, Dad and I could no longer care for Mom at home, so we put her in a care facility, and I retired. During this time, I have made new friends, three of them live in the state of New Mexico. A few months ago, I went to visit these friends, and fell in love with New Mexico. The cost of living isn’t as high as it is here, and the laid-back, small city life seems to mesh well with my personality. I feel this is the place I am meant to live the rest of my life. My problem is that Dad is 87, and I’m leery of moving hundreds of miles away, knowing there are some thugs in the neighborhood, who may try to break into the house once they learn Dad is there alone. Although I have a sister, she has

never been there for our parents the way I have been. In fact, our parents haven’t seen her in seven years. Some friends and relatives say I should go for it, since I’m divorced and childless, and also reminding me I’m no longer a young woman. Then, there are those who feel I’m being selfish for wanting to make this move and finally live my own life. Am I wrong? New Mexico is Calling Me

Dear New Mexico, Hello, my darling, thank you for taking the time to email me and to allow me the privilege to weigh-in on your situation. It takes a special person to care for elderly and/or invalid family members. I’m sending a big hug your way. I want to start by sharing that my mom lived with me and my family for the last two years of her life. She had come to a place where she could no longer live alone. Was my life on hold? Yes, but I wouldn’t take a dime for that time, as I’m sure, neither would you. You’ve already lived through the thick of it, so, there isn’t much more I could share with you about the “role reversal” regarding parental care. It’s hard, it’s thankless and it’s heartbreakingly some of the best times you’ll spend with your parents, unconditionally caring for them as they did for you. It’s an honor for us, but not so much for strong-willed parents.

Their eyes always seem to see you as the child they raised. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how many children you have or how many times you’ve been married. LOL. I can’t help but think, now that your mom’s gone on to glory, that you should continue to be there for your dad. Don’t abandon him now. Stay, give him the same love and commitment you gave to your mother. Your dad, I take it, doesn’t need as much attention, but that shouldn’t determine your decision. You’re doing it just, because it’s the right thing to do. Is it selfish for you to want a break, to want to relocate and start living your own life? Absolutely not at all, that’s normal and you have every right to feel that way. You’ve been an attentive, dedicated and loving daughter…don’t stop now. There’s no need to relo-

cate, just yet. Take care of your Dad and, every three months or so, go visit your friends for a week or two. Sadly, when your dad’s no longer with us—it’ll be time to make your move. I don’t have either one of my parents anymore, and I regret the extra time I missed spending with them every day, because I was busy, I had a family, I had people to see, places to go, things to do. So, trust me, you’ll never regret putting your life on hold by choosing to honor your mother and father. God is watching and will undoubtedly grant you the desires of your heart. Hold on a little longer, your day is coming. You gave and it will be given back to you in good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over. Alma

LET’S PUT AN END TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Men and Women Don’t put your hands on anyone!
