MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith

Get to know YOU 40 years ago. Seems like an entire lifetime. And it was. The great thing is that I am still around to enjoy memories and people from that era. I’m older, yet wiser, I believe. This week I travel back in time, to a time when a lot was going and I thought I knew what I was doing and what I was really about. The year was 1978. In my world, we were one nation under a groove. We were getting down for the funk of it. I was three times a lady, could boogie oogie oogie with the best, loved the nightlife because I had night fever and I had to have that last dance on the groove line. Jimmy Carter was the President. Actually Democrats were running things: the Speaker of the House of Representatives was Tip O’Neill (D-Massachusetts) and the Senate Majority Leader was Robert Byrd (D-West Virginia). As far as governors, my home state, New Jersey had Democrat Brendan Byrne; my parents home state of Florida had Democrat Reuben Askew and my future home state Texas had Democrat Dolph Briscoe; and yes, Alabama had George Wallace! It was a scary time as serial killer Ted Bundy is captured in Pensac-

Yes, I was a fan and we can discuss the Hall of Fame debate! The New York Yankees clinched their 22nd World Series championship, defeating the Dodgers 7–2 in Los Angeles and winning the Series 4 games to 2. Meanwhile, there was the mass murder/suicide of 909 Americans in Jonestown, Guyana under the direction of Jim Jones. Dianne Feinstein succeeded the murdered George Moscone as San Francisco, California’s first woman mayor; Larry Doby became manager of the Chicago White Sox; Leon Spinks defeated Muhammad Ali for heavyweight boxing championship (I won’t say a thing here); Max Robinson is the first Black man to anchor network news; NASA names Black astronauts: Maj. Frederick D. Gregory, Maj. Guion S. Bluford, and Dr. Ronald McNair; there was Bob Marley’s famous “One Love” concert; and the first stamp of the U.S. Postal Service’s Black Heritage USA series honors Harriet Tubman, famed abolitionist and “conductor” on the Underground ola, Florida and The Hillside Stran- Railroad gler, a serial killer prowling Los AnAmong the many births were: Tia geles, claimed a 10th victim. and Tamera Mowry, Zoe Saldana, Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds Foxy Brown, Kobe Bryant, Keenan got his 3,000th major league hit. and Kel, Anthony Mackie, Usher,

Humphrey, composer William Grant Still, Painter Norman Rockwall, activist Harvey Milk, General Daniel “Chappie” James and Kenyan President Jomo Kenyatta. On the campus of Florida A&M University was really where the world began and ended for me. Which brings me to my truth. The Fearless Fang Gang under head coach Rudy Hubbard amassed an 11-0 record, making college football history by becoming the first team to win the newly-established Division I-AA (now Football Championship Subdivision or FCS) national championship. Dr. Walter Smith was the president of FAMU. There were quite a few high points. Just ask Vaughn Wilson, who told the Tallahassee Democrat, “Clemon Johnson (later went on to enjoy a career in the NBA) was here. We won the SIAC and played in the national basketball tournament. The baseball team

beat the University of Miami when they were the No. 1 team in the country.” On campus, I was involved in a number of activities. I was on the FAMUAN Newspaper and Rattler yearbook staffs, statistician for the Rattler men’s basketball team, and I even played on the girls’ softball team. In 1978, I became one of the 34 Elusive Ladies initiated into the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. I didn’t have a boyfriend, but I was cool. I was living in the moment. Or at least I thought I was. And that was my message to my students at El Centro College recently as I encouraged them to fall in love with themselves. I laughed when I saw the picture accompanying this article, and I actually wanted to strangle Micheal Gilliam, who worked on the yearbook staff with me. He came across pictures from back in the day and decided to share on social media. So there I stood, looking like I knew all the

answers. Looking back, I know that I didn’t even know the questions! I told my students to get to know themselves. No matter how busy you are, spend time with YOU, and your thoughts. Listen and learn. Don’t think you know everything. Find a mentor and then, become one. Fortunately there were some people like the two sisters Patricia and Willie Mae, from Defuniak Springs, FL.; the beautiful wife of Marching 100 band director Dr. William P. Foster, Ann; roommate Ruby Angela Sheffield from Opalocka, FL, and numerous others, including my DST big sisters and line sisters; who helped me in the growth process. Don’t tell me you are grown. Actually you are always “growing,” or “evolving.” And change is good. We are a work in progress. We have to take the good and bad to become better. And FAMU prepared me to be the best! Are you prepared?

Night School NIGHT SCHOOL is a new comedy directed by Malcolm D. Lee, who directed last summer’s huge box office hit GIRLS TRIP. Lee, who also directed the BEST MAN series, is known for his romantic comedies with a heart. In NIGHT SCHOOL he teams up again with Tiffany Haddish and, with the addition of Kevin Hart, you have the perfect comedy with a heart. There are plenty of laughs with a few heart tugs mixed in. In NIGHT SCHOOL Hart plays a serious academic underachiever who quits high school and makes a very successful career for himself selling BBQ grills, that is until he accidentally blows up his place of business while proposing to his supermodel looking girlfriend. Without a high paying job he quickly goes from driving a Mercedes to riding the bus. He also finds himself unemployable without his high school diploma, so

he goes back to his old high school and enrolls in night school class to get his GED.

just teaching the class to make a few extra dollars for her living expenses but, who

Haddish plays Carrie the night school teacher, who’s

really cares about her class of misfits achieving. The class,

led by Hart, steals the test results to their first exam causing their teacher to threaten them with expulsion and giving them one last chance to commit themselves to learn. She also forces Hart to get tested and finds out he has some serious learning disabilities. She uses several methods to teach Hart to focus, such as kicking his butt in kickboxing classes. The supporting cast features well-known character actors such as Rob Riggle and Romany Malco. The two play Hart’s classmates and both have some serious issues in dealing with life and reality. They really keep the pace moving. The story doesn’t end, at least not right away, with a happily ever after ending, but it is a comedic version of an inspirational tale about getting second and even third and fourth chances. I howled throughout the movie and I loved NIGHT SCHOOL. The movie lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes and is rated PG-13 (I think it would have been a little funnier if it was rated R). On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” I rate NIGHT SCHOOL a JUMBO.

Our nation’s racist patriarchy

The Last Word Our nation, these United States, are founded on the principles of racism and patriarchy. They are reflected in our very constitution, where enslaved persons were counted as a fraction of a person, and only men of property were allowed the right to vote. The filthy inequality at the foundation of this nation has now bubbled up and boiled over, now polluting every aspect of our lives. Patriarchy places men at the center of life, and women at the periphery. It suggests that women do not matter. It allows for the subjugation of women when they attempt to enter public spaces that have previously been earmarked as “male” spaces. Thus, there were no restrooms for women legislators in the US House or Senate, even as women entered those spaces. They were only created when women demanded them. Of course, restrooms are just a minor manifestation of the hegemonic patriarchy that rules our nation. A great picture of our nation’s racist patriarchy was the visual of doughy and dissipated white men interrogating the amazingly composed Anita Hill as she reviewed her experiences with now Supreme Court Justice Clarence

Thomas. Though Hill was persuasive, she was attacked in the vilest of terms, accused of nonsense like “erotomania," and even recently harassed by Thomas' unhinged spouse who was still seeking apology after two decades. Note to Thomas, take the phone from your wife when her meds are not working. In any case, Thomas is on the Supreme Court because white men chose to disregard the word of a Black woman, a decision that then-Senator Joe Biden says he now regrets. Thomas was confirmed by the narrowest margin in history 52-48. Here we go again. By the time this is published the matter of 45’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is resolved, but the issue of pernicious patriarchy will not be. Regarding Kavanaugh, he has been accused by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford of sexual assault more than 35 years ago, when both were teens. She disclosed her accusations in a letter that California Senator Dianne Feinstein received in July, but did not share with the FBI until later, mainly because Ford asked for confidentiality. Ford has requested that the FBI investigate her assertions, and the Senate Judiciary committee is still fast-tracking the Kavanaugh vote. The outcome, while necessary, is not the bottom line. The issue is the way that racist patriarchy makes some offensive and illegal behavior acceptable. Privileged white male culture allows and encourages

excessive drinking and obnoxious behavior toward women. It is excused because "boys will be boys." But what boys? Black boys, even accused of “reckless eyeballing”, are fair game for lynching! White boys on rampages are excused for assault, rape, and attempted rape. Can I call the name of Recy Taylor, the young Black woman who was walking home from church and raped by a gaggle of white men who thought her body their right? Can I remind us of the Texas gubernatorial candidate, Clayton Williams, who said that if rape was inevitable, a woman should "lay back and enjoy it”? Ann Richards beat him, but that wasn't quite the point. The point was that some man thought that rape was inevitable enough to "enjoy." Privileged white male culture allows a man who should not have been elected President to denigrate women on a regular basis. We are "fat" "dogs" and "liars." He bragged about grabbing women's genitals, and our society is so poached in pernicious patriarchy that 52 percent of all women still voted for him. They thought he was joking because, for too many women, patriarchy has so seeped into our consciousness that the abuse of women is a joke. If we women were honest, we would say that we have all cosigned patriarchy in the interest of keeping it moving. We have deflected the sexist comments that come our

way, even as we cringe from them. We smile at men that we abhor because they may have decision making power in their hands. We dress up or dress down depending on the occasion and the way we have to play the game. We know the system is slanted against us, we know we still have to play, and we decide when we choose to blow the whistle, a whistle we could blow every single day. #MeToo is the tip of the iceberg because it fails to deal with race systematically, but also because it manages the evident and personal, not the institutional. In addition to being #MeToo women, we are mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives (hello Julie Chen Moonves), so some of us want to justify patriarchy for “our” men. Our sons, husbands, cousins, brothers “didn’t mean it” and could not be that bad. Wake up call -- if they violated a woman, they were THAT bad. If they raped a Black woman and you turned away from the accusation, you are wrong, you are horribly and complicity wrong. Tearing down the walls of pernicious patriarchy means attacking the very foundation of our nation. When we attack patriarchy, we also attack the racism that is also part of our foundation. Many have lined up to support Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. How many are equally willing to attack the pernicious racist patriarchial roots of our nation?

QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

WE WON’T FORGET! Hell 2da Kava-Naw-Naw-Naw!

“As a black American, it is a hightech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you. You will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the U.S. Senate rather than hung from a tree.” – Clarence Thomas

of my reasons for despising Clarence Thomas in 600 words. My general angst is anchored in Thomas’ inability to confront racism and discrimination. Thomas is the proud product of affirmative action who works hard to deny those same benefits to anyone else of color. He’s a hypocrite armed with a grudge and a gavel! But for you newcomers, let me point you to the moment where I began to loathe this languishing lump of legal-

Uncle Thomas read this lie under the white-hot lights of the Senate Judiciary trying room. Thomas returned to his home in an otherwise White neighborhood, bought for him by affirmative action entrances into the best white schools. His feet, would eventually rest next to his wife, who like his former wife looked nothing like the woman he once sexually harassed. Watching Brett Kavanaugh’s prepubescent and petulant behavior evoked memories of Clarence Thomas. The trill tirades, the role-reversing portrayal as the victim and the contemporaneous temper tantrums, were all by design and all patently copied from Thomas’ “uppity black” attack. Kavanaugh’s whiny and quarrelsome grumblings uncovered my one and only true sin. If I go to hell tonight, you can rest assured it’s because I hate Clarence Thomas. One of us is destined to burn in hell. It will either be me for hating him or him for hating himself and the lineage that spawned his restless soul. There is no way I could justify all

ized lasciviousness. It was a 1981 article that appeared in the Chicago Tribune. During his barnstorming days as a Black Republican, Thomas constantly pointed to his “sister on welfare” as an example of the “problem” with Black folk. ‘’She gets mad when the mailman is late with her welfare check. That`s how dependent she is. What`s worse is that now her kids feel entitled to the check too. They have no motivation for doing better or getting out of that situation.’’ Thomas depicted his own blood sister as the fabled ‘’welfare queen’’ that got Ronald Reagan elected. However, and according to the Tribune, Thomas` story was mostly a lie. Emma Mae Martin lived in a “beatup” frame house with a hole in the roof

in Pin Point, Ga., a few steps from where she and her two younger brothers were born. Like her own father, the father of her children had abandoned her. When located, Emma was working two minimum wage jobs in order to support her family. She had received $169 a month for a five year period because she quit work to become caretaker to their aunt who suffered a stroke, but now she worked as a hospital cook and reported daily and faithfully at 3:00 a.m. She bore no animosity against her brother. “What about her children, who Thomas said were being indoctrinated into cycles of welfare dependency? As it turns out, Mark, 22, works as a carpenter. Christine, 20, recently was laid off from a bakery. Leola, 15, is still a student. Emma’s oldest boy, Clarence, (named for his miscreant uncle) served aboard the battleship Wisconsin during Operation Desert Storm.” Character matters. Clarence Thomas’ 27 years as water-boy and step-andfetch-it for Conservatives and Evangelicals has proven that he lacks the same.

He has been on the wrong side of civil and human rights in every major case before him. He was resurrected by the Right after his lynching and he’s been “kowtowing” ever since. Brett insulted the court even more than Uncle Thomas. Promote him? Hell 2da Kava-Naw-Naw-Naw! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and

award-winning journalist.

That’s why she told you your role, in her heart, will remain the same. I say, continue to be her caregiver. I know this isn’t ideal, but it’s doable. Do it out of love for family, not as a favor to your ex. Your MIL is in her 80’s, commit to loving her delightfully for the rest of her days. I promise you, your heart will be glad you did.

Do you know this man?

POLICE have not apprehended “Pookie” the serial rapist. We know he has attacked members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and there is a $5,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers.

HE IS A SERIAL RAPIST

He targeted members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. but this is more than about a sorority. We’re talking about a community. Come on PEOPLE! Don’t you CARE? Will it matter when it is your sister, mother, aunt or grandmother or maybe YOU?
