Who is to blame? Hateful words and deeds! Whether it is a gun, bomb or words, Americans are under assault and there are many theories. 11 people killed in a synagogue in Pennsylvania, two shot in a Kroger grocery store, bombs to several people and microphone and platform used to offend. Cesar Sayoc, 56, of Aventura, Florida, is accused of mailing at least 14 explosive devices to prominent Democratic and media figures including former president Barack Obama, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, actor Robert DeNiro and CNN. Sayoc faces five federal charges including interstate
transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and other persons, threatening interstate communications and assaulting current and former federal officers. Robert Bowers, 46, is accused of killing 11 innocent people on October 28, 2018, during Saturday Shabbat services at the Tree of Life Congregation, a Jewish synagogue in the Squirrel Hill community of Pittsburgh, PA. Bowers faces 29 charges including 11 counts of using a firearm to commit murder and multiple counts of two hate crimes:
Gregory A. Bush, 51, is accused of fatally shooting Maurice Stallard, 69, and Vickie Jones, 67, on October 24, 2018, at a Jeffersontown, Kentucky, Kroger grocery store. He is facing two counts of murder, 10 counts of wanton endangerment and the case is being investigated as a hate crime. Bush is being held on $5 million bond. TV host Megyn Kelly, 47, defended the use of blackface, appearing to not understand the racist history.

MY TRUTH
By Cheryl Smith

Say it like you mean it
During a visit to the beautiful campus of Florida Memorial
University, in Miami, FL., Andrew Gillum addressed a topic that is of major concern to me: the lack of respect that is rampant in today’s society. Mayor Gillum is the Democratic candidate for Governor of the state of Florida. He is a college graduate and the mayor of the Capitol of Florida, Tallahassee. The Republican nominee is former U.S. Rep. Rick DeSantis. In their first face-to-face televised debate, Mr. DeSantis not only displayed a lack of home training and disrespect; he also showed why he didn’t deserve support from voters, on so many levels. I wasn’t the only one was taken aback by Mr. DeSantis’ behavior. During his address to the hundreds of supporters on that HBCU campus, Mayor Gillum explained how he had just met his opponent back stage, prior to the beginning of the debate. They were not long-time friends or even associates. And as Mr. Gillum pointed out, “I’m a sitting mayor!” What doesn’t Mr. DeSantis un-
Mayor Andrew Gillum
derstand? Still throughout the majority of the debate, he refused to call Mr. Gillum, “Mayor.” Instead he constantly referred to him as “Andrew.” For many, he might as well had been calling Mayor Gillum, “boy.” Which brings me to my truth. Learning a person’s name and title, while also learning when and where it should be used appropriately, is very important. Unfortunately many immigrants arrive in this country and change their names to appease arrogant Americans who won’t take the time to learn how to
pronounce someone else’s name. So you have people “Europeanizing” their name. It is the height of disrespect to meet someone and not attempt to learn their name. Years ago there was an outcry about people who called newly-elected president Barack Obama, just plain “Obama.” Now previously presidents were referred to as “Bush,” “Carter,” “Reagan,” et al; but people were not having it when it came to America’s first Black President! No way after all of these years was that going to happen! And guess what, surprisingly some of those who were calling people rude for not giving the courtesy titles where appropriate would rudely express their displeasure when telling someone to use the titles. There was also a little back and forth about published stories that producer, director, writer, actor, philanthropist Tyler Perry asked that his staff call him Mr. Perry. Now for the record, it should be a given that you attach a courtesy title until instructed otherwise, especially when
I Messenger speaking to someone in a position of leadership. I have always supported Mr. Perry’s directive (if it came from him). He earned and deserved respect. And, he signed the paycheck. Folks just didn’t get it. It’s not about how long you’ve known or how close you are personally, you still should be respectful and follow certain protocols. I just imagined that Mr. Perry was probably giving someone a tour, possibly some multi-million-dollar investors, and a worker walked by, shouting, “Hey T, what’s going on?” Totally inappropriate, so some protocols had to be established. Thus the directive to refer to their “friend” as Mr. Perry. Some might have said, Mr. Perry was getting the big head, or forgetting where he came from. No, the person out of order was the one that didn’t know or understand that you don’t show out around company. You
might as well had been drunk at the Holiday party! Anyway I grew up learning about how Black people were treated, so I always attach courtesy titles even when talking to my friends, in public forums. After all what am I trying to prove? Do I feel the need to show people that I am on first name basis with someone of status, or what? I’ve interviewed countless of men and women who before I call them by their first name, I ask if it is amenable/agreeable to them, or I ask how would they prefer to be referenced? And there are others, who, even if they don’t have a professional courtesy title, I default back to the way I was raised and add “Mr., Miss, or Mrs.” And what about this POTUS, FLOTUS crap? Or MLK? Or the N word? Sure we live in a society where we use fewer words and acronyms are big.
NOVEMBER 2, 2018
5
And while POTUS began as an abbreviation used by telegraphic code operators in the 1890s; there are others who date it back to President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration, television shows like “The West Wing” or Monica Lewinsky and President Bill Clinton, acknowledging that it became more popular in recent years. Why call him President Barack H. Obama, or Mr. President when you can call him “POTUS?” Why say Dr. King or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., when you can reduce him to “M-L-K?” Will you have a real defense when called out for yelling to someone, “Hey N-word,” versus “Hey Nigger?” Can you get away on a technicality? There are so many ways to disrespect a person with words. I prefer not to be disrespectful. When I say something, I say it like I mean it and I do!

Will Waller County protect or continue to block students' voting rights? by Royce West Texas Senate
For the second time this month, the eyes of Texas and particularly voting rights advocates, have been drawn to the campus of Prairie View A&M University. Prairie View A&M is in Prairie View, Texas, one of several towns in Waller County, located about an hour's drive west of Houston. Two weeks ago, Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos had to intervene following a complaint by candidate for U.S. Congress Mike Siegel, that decisions made by Waller County officials would cause election-day delays and confusion, or even worse for Prairie View students. Prairie View's dormitories do not have an official mailing address. Reports say that a 2016 plan agreed to by school and county officials and the local political parties, instructed Prairie View students to choose between two addresses as their place of residence to complete voter registration forms. During the March 2018 primaries, Waller County Elections Administrator Christy Eason found that one of the dedicated addresses was outside the voting precinct that covers the Prairie View campus. Prairie View students were still allowed to vote on campus, but only after completing a change of address form on site. Siegel, who is running against incumbent Congressman Michael McCall, issued a letter to county officials demanding the elections department to fix the address and precinct mix-up themselves, rather than placing election-day burdens on students. After an incident which led to the arrest of a Siegel campaign worker, Pablos
arranged a conference but is available at call with Waller Counother locations ty, local party officials around the counand Siegel. Numerous accounts, in addition to the complaint, cite Waller County's long history of voting rights problems dating back to at least 1971, when the county tax assessor and voter registrar barred students from voting unless their families owned property in Waller County. And as recently as 2008, the courts intervened when Waller County sought to limit the number of voter registrations that could be submitted by volunteer voter registrars. On Sept 22, Waller County's commissioners adopted the early voting plan, and in October, by a 3-2 vote, refused modifications, including recommendations by County Judge "Trey" Duhon and the elections administrator, that would have at least lessened voting access problems, if not eliminate them. Even if the Prairie View students are successful in court, damage has already been done. Early voting has already begun and with it, opportunities missed and rights violated. My question is what can be done to enforce voting rights in Waller County? In their case, it seems as if the fox is guarding the hen house.

Firing of Megyn Kelly is warranted, says NABJ
Washington, D.C. - The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is monitoring reports that Megyn Kelly's recent offensive comments about blackface Halloween costumes have led to some changes at NBC. Although unconfirmed, several media outlets are reporting that Kelly is in the process of being cut from or reassigned at the network. During Tuesday's broadcast of "Megyn Kelly Today," Kelly set off a firestorm of criticism inside and outside of NBC when she said it was OK when she was growing up for white people to dress up as black characters and there was nothing wrong with donning blackface. Colleagues inside NBC, including Al Roker and Craig Melvin, as well as other journalists, called her comments indefensible and insensitive. Kelly later apologized for her comments, saying that she had learned from the many who spoke out about the subject. NABJ Vice President-Digital Roland Martin appeared on "Megyn Kelly Today" providing historical perspective on the issue of blackface and its offensive nature. He stressed the obligation of people in today's society to be educated about various cultures and racial insensitivities. Citing the Kerner Commission Report and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., both occurring 50 years ago; Martin talked
about the many ways insensitivity and lack of awareness has contributed to the continued abuse and disenfranchisement of people of color. NABJ President Sarah Glover, who is employed by NBC, said that NABJ would like to see media organizations take bold steps to ensure that diversity and inclusion is practiced on-air and behind the scenes, and that black people and people of color are not affronted. "Megyn Kelly's flip comments on blackface were inexcusable. It is imperative that media organizations work to maintain the trust of audiences," said President Glover. "The media industry has the power to inform, and an awesome responsibility to dispel ignorance and not encourage it." Last year, NABJ expressed its disappointment after Kelly was hired as the replacement for Tamron Hall, a successful "Today" show cohost at that time, in part because of Kelly's history of on-air offensive Don’t forget to VOTE and call loved ones remarks regarding people of color. around the country and encourage them! NABJ will continue to monitor developments at NBC and other media companies to assist with opportunities to help with workforce diversity, equity and inclusion. "I hope that NBC will take the appropriate action in dealing with this very unfortunate situation," said NABJ Vice President-Broadcast Dorothy Tucker.

Politically correct, or perfectly civil
THE LAST WORD By DR. JULIANNE MALVEAUX
At this writing, Megyn Kelly is off the air at NBC. After her horridly vapid statement saying she didn’t see anything wrong with blackface, she apologized the next day and even invited journalist Roland Martin on to take her to school. Roland did a brilliant job in explaining the history of blackface and the way it demeans African American people, and it was great that he had the opportunity to educate, not only his odious host but also the millions who watch Megyn Kelly daily. So Kelly tearfully apologized, and she listened to Roland and television commentator Amy Holmes as they talked about race. But does Kelly “get” why her remarks were so objectionable. Roland says she does, but I’m not so sure. She prefaced her apology by saying that she was not a “pc kind of person.” I’m not sure what that means, and what is wrong with being “politically correct” if it means being perfectly civil, informed, and mindful of others. If African American people say that blackface is offensive, it’s not a big deal, Megyn. It’s offensive. Whether you know the history or not, if members of a group say something is wrong, why not accept it?
Or does your white skin privilege allow you to determine what is offensive and what is not? This is not the first time Ms. Kelly has put her foot into racial quicksand. Confident in her Aryan-ness, she proclaimed that Santa Claus is white, and so is Jesus. To declare Jesus white, given his geographical roots on the African continent or in the Middle East, is to embrace a special kind of both spatial and historical ignorance. But if you are vested in the world being a narrow white Caucasian, then you are free to spew racist myths, or shall we say, “fake news.” On the Santa tip, since Santa is not a real person, but a fairy tale figment of someone’s imagination Santa’s race is subject to the imagination. Kelly seemed to have a problem with a Black Santa. Why? Does a Black Santa offend her lily-white sensibilities? Is she so seeped in whiteness that she can’t think outside the box? And did NBC throw the talented Tamron Hall under the bus for that? Speaks to their own racial bias and sense of white superiority! It is tragic to consider that Megyn Kelly has three young children who are undoubtedly being influenced by her warped racial views.
But NBC may, perhaps, be reconsidering their relationship with Kelly. It would be a great loss if she were bounced off the air, though there are some who think she has learned her lesson sufficiently to continue her career. What if, instead of losing her job, she was involved in a “black immersion” experience? What if she had to spend a month in a dormitory at Bennett or Spellman College, spending time with the young Black women she seems not to have taken into consideration heretofore? What if her conversation with Roland Martin could be the first of many, and she was directed to spend time with Essence Editor Emerita Susan Taylor, with NNPA Chair Dorothy Leavell, with Jada Pinkett Smith, with Rev. Jesse Jackson, and with others. Might that make a difference for the ill-educated Megyn Kelly? Or maybe she should just read a book or two. Fifty years after the Kerner Commission report it is clear that there are still two Americas, one Black, and one white. Two Americas, with two different realities, and few bridges to understanding. This is why, even in all-white communities, Black histo-
ry must be taught. This is why our textbooks ought to speak, realistically about enslavement, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and lynching. This is why we need to bust the myth that lynchings were about sex – Black men lusting after white women. Actually, too many lynchings were about economic envy – white men lusting after Black people’s property. After white vandals destroyed the Greenwood section of Tulsa, Oklahoma, one report actually described the cause of the devastation as “Too Many N---rs Having Too Much Money.” Megyn Kelly is not the only white person who is ignorant of American history (because the history of Black people really is American history). White ignorance is one of the reasons I look askance at some aspects of the #MeToo movement. White ignorance is a choice, especially among adults who can educate themselves and expose themselves to the totality of history. Megyn Kelly chose to expose herself to Roland Martin and Amy Holmes. Too bad she shot off her uninformed mouth before she got educated! Perhaps she will now remove the term “p.c.” from her vocabulary unless she happens to mean perfectly civil. Movie review
Hollywood Hernandez Live MID90s is an obvious labor of love for first time director Jonah Hill. He also wrote the movie which is a nostalgic look of the iconic culture of the 1990’s from Nintendo games to Air Jordans. Wrapped around the cultural events of the 90’s, like “Hulkamania” and “The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, is a very good coming of age film about a 13-year-old boy growing up in Los Angeles. Stevie, who is played by Sunny Suljic, is a teenager who is living with an abusive older brother and a single mother who likes to sneak in company in the middle of the night. He finds a group of friends at the local skateboard shop and the skateboarders are better
at being friends to the adolescent boy than his own family, but young Stevie also gets exposed to drinking, drugs, young girls and freestyle skateboarding. The boy is fearless. When Stevie’s mom finally figures out that he’s hanging with a gang of older boys she drags him down to the skateboard shop and tells the skateboarders to stay away from her son, but to no avail. The movie is a time capsule from the 90s, a coming of age movie about a 13-year-old boy and finally, it’s a cultural piece that tells the story of young subur-

ban boys growing up in LA. Jonah Hill does a great job of keeping all the subplots separated and overall tells a very good story. Basically, the movie is a slice of time in the life of a 13-year-old boy. Where he’s going and how his life will end up is anybody’s guess but the 84 minutes of his life that Hill chooses to show is an enjoyable tale about a young
boy growing up. The movie lasts 1 hour and 24 minutes and is rated R. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” I rate MID90s a LARGE.

QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall
WE WON’T FORGET! Button him up!
I was fortunate. I was very fortunate. When I was promoted to a management position at AT&T, which turned into Southwestern Bell, which is now AT&T again, I met a man. It doesn’t matter how old a man you are, all of us who are concerned with growing professionally need a mentor. I needed a brother and God sent me one. At the time, AT&T was a place of corporate and administrative rigidity. There was no real need for creativity because there were no emerging products. Customers could order a standard, trimline or a princess phone. The telephones came in black beige, red, yellow or baby blue. The telephone business was pretty simple then. All I needed was someone to teach me how to adjust to the new environment. They matched with a brother on the job. He passed early in my career, but his name was James A. Gates. He wore his monogram in lower case letters on the breast pocket or the sleeves of his custom-tailored shirts. His initials were festooned to every shirt and handkerchief; “jag.” I understood that monograms were a personal expression of style I didn’t get the lower case. His answer was that humility matters. No one is any more important than the other. Mr. Gates held a few science degrees and had taught at a college prior to coming to Bell. He never discussed how a scientist made it to Consumer Sales and Service. He never complained about anything, but he would
challenge everything that appeared unfair, unequal or unethical. He was as anxious to teach me as I was anxious to learn from him. I’m sure our 30-something boss, who was James up-level and my third level, paired us because we were both Black. Pete Sessions wasn’t always the hardline Conservative Republican that sounds like a Donald Trump acolyte now. He was considered a “decent White boy” by Black folks. His White peers thought he benefitted from being the son of the nation’s fourth FBI Director, William Sessions. Pete was always cool with me, but I was taken aback when he took that hard right into politics. His decision to partner me, a loud-mouthed firebrand, with a perfect gentleman probably sounded like a great idea. Sometimes people think they’re doing things out of intellect, when in reality God is using them to unwittingly carry out his will. James A. Gates was a godsend to me. Not only did Gates teach me the basics of dressing as s gentleman should, but he also taught me how to act. His pet peeve was the same as my mothers.
“It’s ok to act a fool every once and a while, as long as you are just acting.” “Hall, you never leave your office without a suit coat or blazer. Every button on that jacket, except the bottom should be buttoned. Scrub the neck of your white shirts with a toothbrush and bleach before you send them to be laundered. Never stand directly over a female employee, with the crotch of your pants at eye level. Always consider having another woman in your office if you hold a meeting with a woman.” James Gates was the picture of class and character. James believed that every word should be measured and every action should be managed. James didn’t start no ‘ish…James didn’t take no ‘ish. He didn’t swear in public and he didn’t sweat the small stuff. He was my father, friend, fortune-teller and the focal point of my sense of sense of professionalism. That’s why, every time I see this 71-year-old, socially uncircumcised, half-taught heathen walk out of his office, unbuttoned, with his tie pointing to his crotch, and barking like an idiot; I think about James A. Gates. He would have told Donald Trump to button up that jacket and button up his lip. Vote Democrat. Let’s teach Donald Trump lessons that the Republican Party refuses to. James Gates would approve this message. Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and
award-winning journalist.

Valder Beebe Show
THAT CELEBRITY INTERVIEW: Samantha Brown “PBS Travel Expert” Autumn Watch
Every day I anticipate ‘who will change my world’. The focus of the Valder Beebe Show is to “change the way you look at things – the things you look at will change”. This driving force creates every conversation with the best life changers, metaphysicians, religious purveyors, thinkers, and those ahead of their time. Samantha Brown is a favorite for me to speak with about travel. She has previously been a Valder Beebe Show guest sharing her travel expertise. I’ve spoken with
Samantha Brown
Brown when she was the travel expert host on the Travel Channel. I truly adore speak with her because she has a spark so bright and her spirit is effervescent. Brown is a natural to co-host for this special series, having grown up in New Hampshire. Previously Samantha, a travel expert hosted on the Travel Channel, including Girl Meets Hawaii, Great Vacation
Homes, Passport to Europe, Green Getaways, Passport to China, and Samantha Brown’s Asia, among many others. She is the host of Samantha Brown’s Places to Love on PBS. VBS: I introduced you on my show as the travel expert to stars, as I call you. Tell us about your new PBS show. SB: I am the host of a brand new show
Autumn Watch New England. It is a live on PBS it really celebrates everything we love about the fall. From the fall foliage to the traditions and customs the food, the festivals. Plus the unique wild life of New England. It’s going to be a great time for me, I grew up in New England so I’m going home also. Absentee Mother
Dear Alma, My best friend and college roommate grew up without her mother. She was raised by her father and they had a very close relationship. She shared with me that her mother left because of some unfortunate circumstances but has never gone into detail. I do know that her mother did not play a role in her life. She did not pick her up for visits or spend any time with her. It was like she just vanished. Her father just recently died, and she found out that he had two insurance policies and she called the insurance company to get the information. When she did, she was told the beneficiary was her mother. After 20 years, they never divorced, so her mother was entitled to the money. I told her she should sue her and get the money from her dad’s insurance. If she couldn’t take care of her daughter, she doesn’t deserve that money. My friend was left everything else, his car and his house. The house is in need of repairs and if she could get that money from her mother she would be able to take care of some things. She will probably end up selling the house and she is very upset about that. I told her she should sue and confront her mother. What do you think Alma, do you think she’ll win her case? Mama Drama Dear Mama Drama, What do I think? I’m so glad you asked. That leads me to believe there’s some
room here for us to agree and agree to disagree. I agree she should try to reconnect with her mother. I disagree on the approach. Confronting someone is such an agitated act; searching for a non-confrontational conversation is more of what I have in mind. I’m sorry your friend was unable to have her mother in her life when she was growing up. There’s no excuse for that. But you and I both know there are three sides to every story –his side, her side and

the truth. Sometime the truth hurts, and the truth of the matter is, her dad left the money to his wife and everything else to his daughter. There’s no need for a lawsuit. One could ask, does she deserve it? Well, her husband thought she did and that’s all that matters. This is a very tough time for your friend. It’s one of the toughest she’ll experience in her life. She is in need of a sacred place. Losing a parent has lasting effects and can leave you empty and broken for years to come. The best thing you can do for her is apply your comments to the positive side of this situation. Reassure her of the love her father had for her and remind her, even in the most difficult of times, he didn’t forget her mother. She might be

hurt and totally disagree, but there’s no mistake that it’s admirable on the part of her father. Parents have confidential conversations that they never share with their children, and that sounds like what happened here. Maybe her parents agreed her mother would leave the relationship for whatever reason and it has gone unresolved all this time. If there were dozens of days of disrespect, then daddy, I’m sure, would have certainly made a change to his insurance policy. He didn’t. Choosing a beneficiary is not a small feat. When he did so, he didn’t wish, wonder or assume. He made a conscious decision and he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. Like Clover said to Grover, “this issue is over.” There’s nothing your friend should do about it, but respect it and move on. She should also use her father’s last life gesture to reach out to her mother. You never know what that discussion may bring. Both are feeding unanswered questions and allowing the weeds of misunderstanding to grow. It’s time for healing. She can’t have another conversation with her father, but she can with her mother. Encourage her to extend a non-judgmental hand of forgiveness to her mother and if it’s not reciprocated, so be it. She can live a full life knowing she did all that she could to reconcile with her mother. Don’t encourage her to take her mom to court; that’s ugly and it don’t look good on you. Be a good friend who listens and consoles. As her best friend, it’s your job to lift her soul, not damage it. Alma

Do you know this man?
POLICE have not apprehended “Pookie” the serial rapist. We know he has attacked members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and there is a $5,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers.
HE IS A SERIAL RAPIST
He targeted members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. but this is more than about a sorority. We’re talking about a community. Come on PEOPLE! Don’t you CARE? Will it matter when it is your sister, mother, aunt or grandmother or maybe YOU?
