Guyger to stand trial for murder of Botham Jean

A Dallas grand jury returned a murder indictment against former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, 30, for the murder of businessman Botham Jean, 26. Ms. Guyger entered Mr. Jean’s apartment on September 6, 2018 and he was killed. Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson said that over 300 peo-

ple were interviewed and after months of investigations and pouring over information, her office was ready to present the case to the grand jury. Mr. Jean’s relatives, including his mother, returned to Dallas from their home in Saint Lucia, for the proceedings. Speaking about the case, Mr. Jean’s mother, Allison, said that justice is what they are seeking.

The Dallas NAACP released the following statement on the murder conviction of Amber Guyger. “We are pleased with the decision of the grand jury

to indict Amber Guyger for murder for the killing of Mr. Botham Shem Jean. This is the next step in securing a verdict that will be favorable to the evidence that will be presented by the District Attorney’s Office. We would like to thank the District Attorney’s Office for the thorough investigation that they have conducted in gathering evidence in the pursuit of justice. We call on the community to remain calm and let the criminal proceedings take its due course. However, we ask that you join us in continued prayer and support for the family and friends of Mr. Botham Shem Jean. The Dallas NAACP will remain vigilant in monitoring the proceedings of this case and look forward to justice being rendered.” From Aubrey C. Hooper, President, Dallas NAACP

An analyst at PricewatershouseCoopers, Mr. Jean was at home at SouthSide Flats Apartments when he was killed by Ms. Guyger, who also lived in the same apartments but on a different floor. Her defense is that she went to the wrong apartment and killed him because she thought he was a burglar.

MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith

Silence is golden but it’s also deadly. We know each month is dedicated to a number of causes and as a new month approaches, folks turn their attention to the next cause of the month. But what about those who are dealing with a specific issue or cause? What illness or affliction do you have that is getting attention, really only during a designated time? Are you frustrated that once the “month” is over with folks will forget about you and go about their business? Reminds me of a visit to a shelter one summer. The director told me that summers are rough because people are not in the giving mood. People are not thinking about giving, instead they are vacationing. During the cooler months; drives are held for coats, gloves, heavy clothing, socks, shoes, blankets, etc. But what about the warmer months; when families need, sandals, shorts, lighter clothing, etc.? Where are the

donors and donations then? Those parkas, thermal underwear and Timberlands or UGGs are nice in 20 degree weather, but not in 80 or 100 degrees, Sometimes we need to let folks know what’s going on so they can help. Everyone doesn’t have the answers and by sharing information, we can build a better, stronger, more compassionate society. Which brings me to my truth. December 1 is World AIDS Day. For a while folks were really silent about HIV/AIDS, then there was a period of enlightenment. Now there appears to be a situation where we’re back to emphasizing during that designated month, or a special campaign. It was in the mid 1980s that I met the first person I knew for certain had the AIDS virus. The young man was in his 30s and he was preparing for his death. Sadly, he was all alone. You see, people were afraid of

him. They thought they could catch the virus if he stared at them too long. God forbid he touched them. Just imagine, living your last days, taking your last breaths and you can’t feel the warmth of a hug from someone you love. Before I said goodbye to the young man, I shook his hand. Now maybe there are those who will say they will never touch me again. And that’s okay. I understand. And so did that young man who talked candidly about how he had been ostracized by his family, his friends, and sadly, the Black Church. This man was devastated because the folks who he thought he could depend on actually shunned him when he was diagnosed with HIV. There were no hugs, kisses or handshakes. Not even a dap. No, they would not touch him for fear of catching the virus. I learned quite a bit from our meeting. Ignorance is not only bliss, it can be

downright stupid, especially if you don’t seize the opportunity to become educated. Ignorance about the disease caused fear and mass hysteria. Even when Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Rae Lewis Thornton talked openly about the disease, and how it could be contracted, folks still refused to address and embrace those afflicted. There is no cure, but you can live with the disease. Just like when it was first diagnosed in 1981, there needs to be more ed-

ucational efforts about HIV/ AIDS, and not just during AIDS Awareness Month or for World AIDS Day programs. I salute those churches that have HIV/AIDS minis-

tries and the organizations that work to serve not only the affected, but their families also. Schools could do more also, There are people with

the virus who get up every day working to make this world a better place. They don’t let their affliction keep them from being productive members of society. What about those who don’t have a disease? There are many who don’t do anything to make this world a better place and aren’t doing anything p ro d u c t i ve with their lives. We all have a purpose. If we are going to each reach our fullest potential, we must refrain from being pigeonholed. We must wake up every day, addressing the ills and issues of society. Do you?

Can a woman’s coalition survive petulant white women?

The Last Word By Dr. Julianne Malveaux

I have had about enough of some white women! First, 53 percent of them vote for an odious genital-grabber. Then, they organize a woman’s march with momentum from the #MeToo movement, founded by Tarana Burke, but co-opted by white women like the wanna-be activist Alyssa Milano who was a mediocre actress back in the day. Then, bunches of them support Roy Moore, an Alabama pedophile who would be Senator. Then the majority of them vote against progressive candidates like Georgia’s Stacey Abrams and Florida’s Andrew Gillum. Meanwhile, the four women who lead the Women’s March – Bob Bland, Tamika Mallory, Linda Sarsour, and Carmen Perez – are organizing for a January 19 march, and the self-proclaimed “founder” is demanding their resignation. Really? Theresa Shook is the Hawaii grandmother who put an idea on Facebook in the wake of the 2016 election. “We should march,” she said. She did little else, and activist Bob Bland picked up the baton and ran with it. She recruited other women, seasoned activists in their own right. Tamika Mallory had led a march from New York to DC to stop gun violence. Carmen Perez has worked on criminal justice reform and has worked on Harry Belafonte’s Gathering for Justice, now serving as its Executive Director. Linda Sarsour, a former executive director of the

Arab American Association of New York, has worked with Black Lives Matter and on police brutality issues. The four co-chairs of the Women’s March are the very picture of intersectionality and multicultural cooperation – white, Black, Latina, and Palestinian, they are the rainbow! So where does Teresa Shook get off asking these women to step down from a movement they built? She, along with wannabe activist and has-been actress Alyssa Milano have demanded that the women’s march leaders “denounce” National of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan. Why? They object to his anti-Semitic rhetoric. They object to the fact that Tamika Mallory attended his annual Savior’s Day this year. They say that anti-Semitism is hateful and dangerous, and they are right. But it wasn’t the Nation of Islam that shot up the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh! White people’s hatred for Minister Farrakhan is irrational and, might I say, racist. He is the only person, the only human being that Congress has censured. No David Duke, no Charlottesville murderers, none of the hatemongers that have caused the racist tension in our nation. Just Minister Farrakhan. But then our society is consistent with its double standards and its demands that Black people bend over backward to prove that we, too, sing America. With the fraught history between Black and white women, with their complicity in our rapes, and in the lynching of Black men, white women have no right to demand anything of Black women, let alone that leaders like Tamika

Mallory “denounce” Minister Farrakhan. For the record, the Minister, a man who has the unique power to galvanize Black people, especially Black men, really doesn’t care what people outside of the Nation of Islam, think of him. He understands this nation so well that he would accept any “denouncement” and keep it moving. But anyone demanding a denouncement of Farrakhan has no knowledge of American history, of African American history, of context, or of the unequal treatment that African American people experience that is a constant in our nation. And white women have consistently had little empathy for the way history has treated Black women. Shook and Milano remind me of antebellum white women, hoop skirts and all, stomping their feet when they don’t get their way. Milano says she won’t speak if Tamika Mallory doesn’t denounce Farrakhan. So, stay home, Alyssa. We won’t miss you. Other white women say they won’t march. Hundreds of thousands of others will. And Teresa Shook, the so-called founder, says she is demanding resignations. What is she going to do if she doesn’t get them? Shook and Milano are the antitheses of coalition building and intersectionality. In an intersectional world, we come together to work on issues we agree on, in this case, the treatment of women. We decide to disagree on other matters. And sometimes, we agree to walk a mile in another woman’s shoes. Black, white, Latina, Asian, Native, Palestinian and other women

have starkly different experiences. We are joined by our gender but separated by the status of the men in our race, and by the differential privilege that some women experience. Miss Ann knew that enslaved women were being raped. She didn’t care. Now the descendants of enslaved women are willing to work with them, not FOR them, but with them. And the descendants of enslaved women have had enough foot-stomping white woman privilege. No more. There will be no women’s coalition if there is no mutual respect. Alyssa Milano and Teresa Shook and the other white women making foot-stomping demands have shown the hard-working CoChairs of the Women’s March a corrosive disrespect. They set the notion of a women’s coalition back decades. But they have also moved us forward because they have reminded us how important it is to consider history and context before we attempt to build a movement. White women, after all, are the mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives of the white men who practice oppression. Those who consider themselves “woke” need to check their sisters who are not. Meanwhile, Tamika Mallory, Linda Sarsour, Carmen Perez, and Bob Bland need to stand their ground. They built something powerful and beautiful, even though there were fissures beneath the surface. The struggle to dismantle patriarchy, racism, and predatory capitalism continues. Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. Her latest book “Are We Better Off? jails, a disproportionate number are African Americans and other people of color. According to a 2018 Pew Research Study, in 2016 African Americans represented 12 percent of the U.S. adult population but 33 percent of the sentenced prison population. The ACLU reports that African American men are six times more likely to be

incarcerated as White men in the U.S. According to the NAACP’s Criminal Justice Fact Sheet, African American women are imprisoned at twice the rate of White women. The Federal Bureau of Prisons reported in 2018 that 38 percent of prison inmates are African American. But we need to do more than merely stating the statistics of criminal justice that bear witness to the racial, social, and economic inequities and injustices. We need solutions. We need more research about the successful programs and projects that can prevent mass incarceration while we emphasize the urgency for criminal jus-

tice reform legislation at both the federal and state levels. We also need more effective programs for the hundreds of thousands of incarcerated people preparing to reenter society without the counterproductivity of recidivism. I have served on panel discussions amicably with Mark Holden, general counsel of Koch Industries, who also supports the First Step Act, a bill grounded in evidence-based and data-driven practices that we know keep communities safe and provide people with the second chances they need to lead productive lives. The bill specifically provides programs to help reduce the risk that prisoners will recidivate upon release from prison. Mark and I are on the same page on the issues of reentry and the need to reduce systemic reincarceration. In fact, Koch Industries has been funding criminal justice reform efforts for more than a decade and was one of the first major corporations in the U.S. to “ban the box” by removing questions about criminal history on its employment applications. Other corporate leaders should also “ban the box.” Earlier this year at the NNPA’s Mid-Winter Conference, we were pleased to welcome Brother Lam-

ont Carey, a former prison inmate, noted author and founder of Contact Visits, a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization that he established to assist people preparing to reenter society from prison. It was reassuring to see how Lamont was able to break free of the stigma of incarceration and make a positive and productive contribution to help others transform their lives, families and communities. Lastly, on the related issue of bail reform: There are nearly a half million people, most of whom are people of color, who are sitting in jail today only because they cannot afford to post a monetary bail. Google and Koch have also teamed up to raise awareness about the necessity for bail reform in America. They believe that individuals accused of a crime should not be required to provide bail unless deemed a threat to public safety or a flight risk, because freedom should not hinge on a person’s financial worth. The time is now for action, not more partisan debate. No more postponements. No more excuses. The U.S. Congress should pass the First Step Act. We want equal justice. Criminal justice reform for Black America is long overdue. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. is President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and can be reached at dr.bchavis@nnpa.org

many moments causing one to wonder, “Who is truly the user?” A mother’s love can manifest itself like addiction to a drug. In Ben Is Back, the highs and lows are more evident in the mom’s character.

Lifestyle Editor

Her love for her son is evident. Her defense of him, even at the detriment of others, is a habit she cannot shake. Ben Is Back exposes users in many forms when it comes to drug addiction.

There’s longing for normalization of the situation.

Academy Award-Winning actress Julia Roberts’ character, Holly Burns, is a wife and mother with a variety of family dynamics. She has two children, Ben and Ivy from a previous relationship, and is currently married to Neal Beeby, played by acclaimed and Tony Award-Winning actor Courtney B. Vance. Together, they have two bi-racial children. At onset, they appear to be a loving, blended family, until drug-addicted son Ben, played by Lucas Hedges, returns to the mix. Although it seems everyone is skeptical about the conditions of and their safety from Ben’s holiday visit from rehab, supposedly approved by his sponsor, they eventually let their guards down to welcome him back, which leads to major let downs, one after another. In EVERY instance Holly sides with Ben,

proving the deterioration of her mindset. In one scene, as Ben attempts to take ownership for the harm he’s caused to others, including someone’s drug-related death, Holly defends his actions in such a twisted way that Ben questions her thinking, asking out loud if she realized what she was saying. The film briefly touches on disparities in punishment for drug-related crimes when it comes to race.

While Ben was the subject of several tense moments between husband and wife, Neal at one point says to Holly, “You know if Ben were Black, he’d be in jail.” Revelations are also made regarding drug-related actions and abuse by one of Ben’s former educators. Town secrets unbeknownst to Holly become clear as it seems so many had a history of interactions with her son. Holly’s attempts at saving Ben place her in a variety of situations, with

Addiction causes an altered state of being. Perilous actions unfold throughout the film, weighing heavy for viewers as Holly neglects many to try and tame one. Ben Is Back will have you holding your breath, preparing for the travesty of what happens next. This movie shows how children not turning out as hoped for can have such a stronghold on a mother’s mind. When they’re not physically present, outward feelings lay dormant, however mental torment is real. It appears Ben actually

WE WON’T FORGET! KwanzaaFest 2018 is Alive and Healthy! 281-330-800-FO! If Alex Trebek, the 78-year old legendary voice of Jeopardy, posed that as a question, there could only be one answer to match the hint. “Who is Mike Jones?” Well we know “Who Mike Jones is” and you need to make your way to the 28th Annual KwanzaaFest to see him. We wanted Mike Jones at KwanzaaFest back in the day and he has pledged to be with us on Saturday, December 8. If you don’t believe us, call the number…He still answers!!! KwanzaaFest 2018 is near and continues to bring the community an admission-free, two-day “Wellness check” and festival full of family-friendly activities! Once again, KwanzaaFest will offer FREE health services to those attending the event and the majority of these services are offered to everyone regardless of your insurance status. So if being cash-strapped is your pre-existing condition, like it is for most of us, you need to be there. And peep this; getting a free screening makes you eligible for thousands of dollars worth of prizes; Every Hour! Maybe you have coverage, but your deductible is a roadblock to gaining all of your insurance benefits. For those with high-deductible plans, this means that you too are

invited to come get your screenings for free, from cholesterol to diabetes screening, from kidney disease to blood pressure screening and much, much more! Every year, KwanzaaFest produces almost a half-million dollars in free health care. So, come take part of KwanzaaFest’s annual health outreach! In addition to getting you and your loved one’s health checked out, you can also come participate in a FREE 5K Walk/Run that spans through parts of historic Fair Park. Whether you are part of a running team or just want to do the course at your own pace, we have something for everyone in this popular event. You can also join us in the wide array of activities set up for children in the ParrishLand’s KidFest area, where kids can participate in games, spelling and math contests and much more in a secured environment! This has always been a big hit with everyone attending and this year promises to continue to delight our youngest patrons. As always we are grateful to have Parrish McDonald’s Restaurants as an annual sponsor, but the CEO will take the stage with his own band. Yep, we got local and National talent. Sunday afternoon, our mainstage will be OH-mazing! Recording artist Lenny Williams will bring his show, while local-

ly-acclaimed, nationally recognized comedian D. Elli$ will bring the best-known medicine for the soul… laughter! And Dallas’ own Dorrough will take to the stage on Saturday. Let’s not forget the many vendors who bring unique products that are showcased both days of KwanzaaFest. You can come do your holiday shopping while you enjoy all of the activities which are available in the backdrop of FREE entertainment provided by talented local entertainers and our featured national entertainers! Forbes released an article last year that underscores our mission and our reason for sponsoring KwanzaaFest each year. “One reason the U.S. ranks so poorly globally is that health outcomes for certain racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups fare so poorly domestically. African-Americans, Latinos and the economically disadvantaged experience poorer health care access and lower quality of care than white Americans. And in most measures, that gap is growing.” Don’t miss this opportunity to come out and get yourself checked out. Don’t put your health or the health of your family in jeopardy. Come for your health but stay for the fun. Find ticket locations and E-Tickets on our Facebook page; KwanzaaFest Dallas! Be there! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and

Prison Reform Now! From the Capitol By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

In the few remaining weeks of the 115th Congress it is imperative that we witness the passage of legislation that will, among other things, overhaul the nation’s sentencing guidelines, and give judges the option of bypassing so-called mandatory minimum sentences that have resulted in the unfair mass incarceration of overwhelming numbers of ethnic minorities, and poor people. The legislation, passed in the House of Representatives earlier this year, and now being considered in the Senate has the support of a number of senior officials in the Trump administration. President Trump seems inclined to

support the measure, known as the First Step Act, which is supported by his daughter and her husband. The law would be a tremendous Christmas gift for inmates in federal institutions who have received overly-harsh prison sentences during the past two decades, and for members of their families, especially children, who have been damaged by their prolonged absences. It includes monies for programs designed to end the tragedy of released inmates continuously returning to prison. It also calls for reductions in mandatory minimum sentences for those who have been convicted of non-violent drug

He’s Here

offenses. Outside of the Congress, the legislation is being supported by influential organizations and members of the nation’s law enforcement community. The country’s largest policing body; the Fraternal Order of Police is supporting it, as is The American Civil Liberties Union. The First Step Act is an example of significant bi-partisan legislation that can be a model for other laws that emanate in the 116th Congress that benefit the American people. Mass incarceration has been poisonous in our country which has approximately five percent of the world’s population, but has nearly twenty-five percent of the world’s incarcerated men and women, held in state and federal penal institutions where responsible rehabilitation programs are uncommon and ineffective. Criminologists, psychologists and social workers have concluded that job training programs, ad-

equate housing and healthcare for formally incarcerated people will lessen the likelihood that they will commit crimes, returning them to prison. In the past two decades our nation has been encumbered by a legislative mindset that mandated that people convicted of crimes should be sentenced to prison, and largely forgotten. That policy has been a disaster for our society, and it is now time to change it. We must do it not only for those men and women who have had their freedom taken away, but for our entire society? Justice, fairness and commonsense demand that we act, and that we act now! Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’s 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. Serving as a representative since 1993, when she was the first registered nurse elected to Congress.

Rawlings presents Dirk Nowitzki with key to City

Sports Editor

“It’s about time” Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki joked recently after receiving the key to the City of Dallas from Mayor Mike Rawlings. "I'm very honored, very humbled. It's been a long great ride here. 20 years representing this city proudly...the franchise, the city, and the fanbase,” Nowitzki said. “Dallas has supported me and took me in from day one. We grew together and I have done everything in my power to give back to this city. Thank you.” Nowitzki was presented with the key, during halftime of the Mavericks game against the Brooklyn Nets, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the community and his professional achievements over his 20year career with the Mavericks. Nowitzki is only the third person to receive a key from Mayor Rawlings since he took office in 2011. Previously receiving keys from Rawlings were golfer Jordan Spieth during his rookie season after winning both the Masters and the U.S. Open. The second went to local preservationist Virginia McAllister. “It's not something I do on a regular basis,” Rawlings explained. “It has to be someone special. It’s got to be someone, really, that is a very, very special person. Sort of one of those things where if they’re great, there’s no debate. [Nowitzki] is that. “Dirk embodies everything Dallas residents should aspire to be. For any sports fan out there, he’s a joy to watch, always

striving for excellence and giving 110 percent. But what many don’t fully understand is how diligent, passionate, humble and generous Dirk is, on and off the court.” Nowitzki accepted the key at halftime, joined by the mayor, Dallas City council members and three high school students who assisted in creating a larger ceremonial key specially made for Nowitzki. Nowitzki is one of only seven players to play at least 20 seasons in the NBA and is the only player in NBA history to play 21 seasons with the same franchise. He is the top foreign-born scorer in league history, the only foreign-born player in the NBA’s 30,000-point club, one of seven players in NBA history to reach 31,000 career points and is seventh on NBA’s all-time points leaders. Among Nowitzki’s notable humanitarian contributions: •Grants made annually to organizations focusing on children’s wellbeing, health and education through The Dirk Nowitzki Foundation – Last year, the Foundation raised $960,000 and held its annualPro Celebrity

Tennis Classic raising $1.92 million for Hurricane Harvey victims. His foundation also holds monthly meetings with Hurricane Harvey victims to help families start over and re-enter the workforce. •Hurricane relief efforts – Nowitzki donated to the JJ Barea Foundation to assist Hurricane Maria victims in Puerto Rico. He also helped 10 families who were relocated to Dallas from Houston after Hurricane Harvey. •Annual Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game to benefit various local nonprofits such as Girls Embracing Mothers, Alley’s House, Booker T. Washington School for the Performing and Visual Arts. •Annual visits to patients at Children’s Medical Center. •“Dirk’s Dunkers” – Nowitzki hosts special guests from youthbased nonprofit organizations, underserved schools and veteran groups in this section of the American Airlines Center. •Seats for Soldiers--Nowitzki, along with his teammates, signs hundreds of autographs while spending time with wounded soldiers from the Brooke Army

Medical Center in San Antonio and reserve troops from the Dallas-Fort Worth area following the Seats for Soldiers game each fall. In recognition of Nowitzki’s global humanitarian efforts, the World Affairs Council of Dallas/ Fort Worth honored him with the prestigious H. Neil Mallon Award in September 2017. On the court, Nowitzki is the Mavericks’ all-time leader in points (31,187), games played (1,471), starts (1,440), minutes (50,573), rebounds (11,331), defensive rebounds (9,868), field goals made (11,034), 3-pointersmade (1,918), free throws made (7,201) and blocks (1,263). He has led the Mavericks to 15 NBA playoff appearances, including the franchise's first Finals appearance in 2006 and its only NBA championship in 2011, where he was named Most Valuable Player. He is a 13-time AllStar, a 12-time All-NBA Team member, the first European player to start in an All-Star Game, and the first European player to receive the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 2007. On December 10, 2012, he became the first non-American player to receive the NaismithLegacy Award. He has also received the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award (2016-17) and the Magic Johnson Award (2013-14). “Dallas is so fortunate and proud to have a leader like him in our city,” concluded the Mayor. “He is a class act, a man who consistently puts his teammates, his city and his family before himself.”
