MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith

Publisher

We’re really at war I’m so glad the midterm elections are over. As we anxiously await the results, I must say that I am proud of those who exercised their right to vote and also encouraged others. On the other hand, I have enough disdain to split between those who didn’t vote, those who worked to disenfranchise voters and those who acted as though everything was okay and that voter suppression is not real. Silence is not always golden and silence can be devastating and deadly. But if I and others are smart, we know the work never stops and while some say, on to the next election; there are others who are already planning two, three and ten elections ahead. And that’s where they are smarter. Which brings me to my truth. I have heard so many Black Republicans spouting the “company line” and I understand. I think. I know and hold in high regard some Black Republicans but this “new” Black

Republican who refuses to acknowledge and/or call out wrongs, well they are dangerous. When folks look back on these times, they probably won’t be seeking kindly about either party, and they will probably laugh or cry about voter apathy and voter suppression. Which side of history will you be on after you’re long gone? Far too long I have said that Dallas County Democrats need to become stronger. Democrats need more money, they need to take advantage of some of the great minds eager to serve, and they need to value Black and Brown voters. You see, I have heard the stories of how workers in the Dallas Democratic Party office have felt disenfranchised, how they have been overlooked for key assignments and how resources, even if they are limited, are not equitably distributed! And what about the attention given to the candidates? Shall I refer back to campaigns where

clearly the Democratic stamp of approval is different. Look at Beto in 2018 and Kirk in 2002. Then you have the “political consultants.” You know the ones who haven’t worked on any campaigns, never studied maps or polls, don’t have a strategy and don’t even do a job of making sure candidates are represented fairly in advertising plans; but get the six-figure fees while their Black counterparts who have equal or better credentials settle for low five figure fees and many are relegated to running around acting as a chauffeur or escort (especially for those unfamiliar communities!) Just let the hit dog holler. Remember excuses are the tools of incompetence that build monument of nothing and those who specialize in them are seldom good at anything else. And we all know that politics and politicians can be hypocritical. On more than one occasion I have had someone come to

I Messenger me during these midterm elections and remind me that many of the same Democrats saying “Don’t vote for” the Republican, were during the last election cycle saying “don’t vote for the Democrat.” What the heck?! Were the Democrats who asked voter to switch parties thinking ahead to future elections, or just that one victory? Just think about the first-time voters last time around. You weren’t building any loyalty to your party when you asked them to vote against your party, did you? So how do you get them back over to the side of the Democrats, those wishy washy folks who will turn on their own instead of whipping their own into shape? Hey, I didn’t say I had the answer, but I do know that I hear too often that in politics there are “no permanent friends just

permanent issues.” And while I have so much respect for those who have that position, my position is different. I have permanent friends who I sometimes differ with on issues and we each state our positions and move forward, refusing to let one issue tear down a foundation that was built on so much more. Now if I have a friend who is losing their mind, I feel a responsibility to help them find it and get their stuff together. I don’t turn on them. Sadly Democrats turn easier than Republicans. Just look at all the names Donald Trump called his opponents during the presidential election of 2016. Some of those same candidates, should I call the roll, have drunk the Kool-aid, sucked up their pride, and are walking lock-step with their “leader?” They fall in line and they tow

the line, no matter how idiotic it seems, sounds and looks. Now, I’m not saying that Democrats need to turn into utter fools; however they might think about utilitarianism - Utilitarianism holds that the most ethical choice is the one that will produce the greatest good for the greatest number. And Democrats might listen to those who have a better end game because what good is it to win a few skirmishes or battles and lose the war? The older Democrats don’t know everything and the younger ones are not totally clueless. Better get it together because you’re not going to make it on too many winds and a prayer; especially if you spend most of your time fighting one another! Republicans, you’re next. What’s your truth?

Hate and Horror - Where does it end? THE LAST WORD By DR. JULIANNE MALVEAUX

As strange as it seems, I now view the Bush years with nostalgia. Both Big Bush (POTUS 41) and his son Shrub (POTUS 43) incurred the ire of Democrats, with Shrubs Supreme Court-complicit theft of the 2000 election prompting anger and protests. Both Bushes, perhaps because of their love of country, comported themselves as gentlemen despite the protests. In the face of Democratic anger, they exuded civility. And why not? Each won his election, each loved the country, neither had to be mean or hateful to Democrats, people of color, immigrants, Jewish people, the GBLTQ community or anyone else. While they did not budge on their ideology, neither painted their political opponents as enemies. Fast forward. Now we have a President who lost the popular vote by 3 million. He bullied his way into the Republican nomination, doing the kind of name-calling that we’d put a 5-year-old on a timeout for. And he has blustered his way into the Presidency with the same invective, hate, anger, and crowd-pleasing tirades that marked his campaign. Even when he attempts to be decent, which means merely reading from the teleprompter language someone else has drafted, he has to stop, mid-comment, to pat himself on the back and remind us that he is “being good.” Really! A 70-year-old man trumpets

that he is “being good” and he expects applause. The tragedy of Trump is that his Republican allies have not condemned his nonsense because they see political gains in his “leadership.” Motivated by 45, Cesar Sayoc has “allegedly” mailed at least 15 pipe bombs to Democratic political figures that Trump has criticized. Instead of doing the decent thing (like calling his predecessors, Presidents Obama, and Clinton to pledge to use federal resources to get to the bottom of this madness), he spent time speculating that

When he failed to gain entry to the church, he went to a nearby Kroger and shot a Black woman Vicki Jones, 67, in the store. Then he shot Maurice Stellard, 69, in the parking lot, in front of his 12-year-old grandson. A white man had the possibility of shooting him to stop him, but when Bush assured the white man that “white people don’t shoot white people,” he let him go. Thankfully, law enforcement officers caught him, but it took them four days to declare his crimes a hate crime. Why? Have we so normalized the shooting of Black people that it is okay for

perhaps this was a Democratic set-up. Even when Sayoc, with a van emblazoned with Trump paraphernalia and anti-CNN propaganda, was caught, he had little to say to condemn the bomber. We don’t know if Sayoc worked alone, or had company. We do know that Democratic leaders are being forced, now, to take precautions against insanity. During the same week that Sayoc was arrested, on October 24, a white man, Gregory Bush, 51, tried to break his way into First Baptist Church, a Black church in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, a suburb of Louisville.

an armed bigot to go into a public space and kill Black people and law enforcement officials have to think about whether this is a hate crime or not? The end of a week when hate prevailed was the occasion of the worst crime of that week. Robert Gregory Bowers, 46, entered the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh and massacred 11 people. The oldest was a Holocaust survivor in her 90s, the youngest, a pair of disabled brothers in their 50s. Bowers has now pleaded not guilty to 44 counts of murder, attempted murder and hate crimes. Our hateful President, despite com-

munity pleading, insisted on visiting Pittsburg for a photo op (he says to pay his respects). It is futile to think that a man who uses hateful rhetoric as his stock in trade will back down, even as it is clear that the rhetoric is working. It is pointless to think that Republicans will call him to task because they are gaining too much from his hate. It is fruitless to think that some of the Republican white men in power – Senator Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senator Lindsey Graham, and others – will talk to white men like Gregory Bush, Robert Gregory Bowers, and Cesar Sayoc – to explain why their actions are unacceptable. The new reality is that we have an unchecked leader who spews hate and his loyal army follows with hateful actions, whether it is assaulting people who come to his rallies, chanting ugliness, or sending bombs and killing people. The week of October 22 may have been one of the saddest weeks in our nation’s recent history. It is unfortunate because of the hate spewed and the lives lost, but also because of the delayed news coverage of the Jacksontown massacres of two Black people at a Kroger’s store. Initially, the media failed to connect the dots, leaving many Black people ready to shout, again, Black Lives Matter. Hate is hate is hate is hate, and we have to resist it all! GOP, Democrats splitting governor’s races in key states

By Defender News Service

Democrats tried Tuesday to fight their way back to power in state capitols across the country by reclaiming governor’s seats in key Midwest states, major steps in their nationwide strategy to reverse years of Republican gains in state capitols. Still, their early victories in Kansas, Illinois and Michigan were balanced by Republicans holding on to one of the top prizes, Florida, and the governor’s offices in Ohio and Arizona. All three states will figure prominently in the presidential map in two years. The other most closely watched governor’s race, in Georgia, remained too close to call Tuesday night. In Michigan, Democrat Gretchen Whitmer defeated Republican Bill Schuette, upending years of Republican control in the state. The former legislative leader will become the second female governor in a state where Democrats heavily targeted other statewide and legislative offices. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in Illinois lost his bid for a second term to Democrat J.B. Pritzker. The billionaire appears

to have capitalized not only on Rauner’s lack of popularity but broader dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump. And in Kansas, Democratic state lawmaker Laura Kelly defeated Republican Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a close ally of Trump. New Mexico also tipped into the Democratic column, with voters choosing Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham to succeed twoterm Republican Gov. Susana Martinez. The campaign had been defined by conflicts over struggling public schools and high poverty rates. Democrats Andrew Cuomo in New York and Tom Wolf in Pennsylvania easily won re-election, as did two Republicans in Democratic-leaning states — Larry Hogan in Maryland and Charlie Baker in Massachusetts. In Iowa, Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds broke the Democrats’ run of Midwest success by being elected to a full term. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a former Republican presidential candidate and Trump ally, was seeking a third term in a race that remained too close to call. In all, voters were

choosing 36 governors and 6,089 state legislators in general and special elections that have attracted record amounts of spending from national Democratic and Republican groups. Republicans are in control more often than not in state capitols across the country, but Democrats were trying to pull a little closer in Tuesday’s elections. Democrats were hoping enthusiasm among their voters also could flip the governor’s seat in Iowa, as well as in traditional battleground states Nevada and Wisconsin. The political parties are trying not only to win now, but also to put themselves in strong position for the elections two years from now that will determine which party will have the upper hand in redrawing congressional and state legislative districts. Voters in Colorado, Michigan and Missouri approved ballot measures Tuesday overhauling the redistricting process in ways that are intended to reduce the likelihood of partisan gerrymandering by either major party. A redistricting ballot measure

also was on the ballot in Utah. Republicans entered Tuesday’s election with a sizable advantage, controlling two-thirds of the 99 state legislative chambers and 33 governors’ offices. The GOP held a trifecta of power in 25 states, compared with just eight for Democrats. Democrats likely will gain full control in Illinois and New Mexico by winning the governor’s races. The Democratic victories in Kansas and Michigan will break up Republican trifectas. Republicans were largely on defense but also were angling for gains in a few traditionally Democratic states, such Connecticut. The governor’s races have extra emphasis in 28 states where the winners will serve four-year terms with the potential power to approve or reject district boundaries drawn for Congress or state legislatures. The Democratic Governors Association had focused on nine swing states — Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — where it believes the governorships could

11

be pivotal in congressional redistricting. As of mid-October, the Democratic Governors Association and its affiliated entities had raised $122 million during the past two years — a record outdone only by the Republican Governors Association’s new high mark of at least $156 million. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee and Republican State Leadership Committee, which focus on state races, also set record fundraising targets. The National Democratic Redistricting Committee, led by former Obama administration Attorney General Eric Holder, has pumped additional money into state races viewed as critical in future redistricting decisions. Although most state lawmakers responsible for redistricting will be elected in 2020, voters on Tuesday were electing more than 800 state lawmakers in about two dozen states to four-year terms where they could play a role in approving new congressional or state legislative districts.

Movie review

Hollywood Hernandez Live T y l e r Perry’s latest project, NOBODY’S FOOL, is a very “adult” R rated romantic comedy. I mentioned that first because it is not one of his Christian faith-based films that the pastor loads up the church bus and takes the congregation to. He really pushes the “R rating” in this movie. Secondly, Tiffany Haddish, while getting top billing in the film, is not the main character in the movie. That spot belongs to Tika Sumpter, a mainstay in previous Tyler Perry projects like “The Have’s and the Have-nots” and the 2013 Tyler Perry film A MADEA CHRISTMAS. When the film opens Danica gets a call from her mother, Whoppie Goldberg, requesting that she pick up her sister Tayna (Haddish) who’s just finished a five-year prison sentence. The two sisters are like oil and water. Tanya is a hood chick who doesn’t mind scrapping with anyone to settle her differences (man or woman) and Danica is an educated and well-refined executive at an ad agency. Danica is also involved in a oneyear relationship with a man who she has only communicated with on the phone. Her sister Tanya is very quickly convinced that her sister is being “Catfished” and she contacts the TV show on MTV to flush out the catfish. The

results are hilarious. Me anw h i l e , Danica does have a potential man in real life, played by Omari Hardwick, who treats her like a queen and gives her free coffee and a rose every day when she comes into his coffee shop. However, her potential suitor doesn’t meet the re qu i re me nt s which she has put on her list of “must-haves” for a man. There lies Perry’s lesson for the film. While providing plenty of comedy from both Haddish and Goldberg the plot is about a successful woman who would rather be alone than to be with a man with flaws and who is less than perfect. It’s something I see as a “less than perfect man” myself every day. I think it is a great jumping off point for conversations on the matter. NOBODY’S FOOL is funny, sexy and it has a moral to the story that I know a lot of successful women will not admit

to, but I would hope the ladies would take a look at themselves in the mirror after seeing this movie. I got it and I liked it a lot. And by the way be sure and stay until the very end for some funny outtakes from the movie. Don’t leave during the credits. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” I rate NOBODY’S FOOL a LARGE!

QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

WE WON’T FORGET! The Great White Hope

James Earl Jones portrayed world heavyweight boxing champ Jack Johnson, whose power and persona took White America by surprise in the early 1900’s. Johnson presented a double threat to the status quo; he violated laws that forbade him White female companionship, and literally, no one could whip his Black ass. The “Great White Hope” made its film debut in 1970, following its success on Broadway. Here’s how a film critic described the plot: “A Black champion boxer and his White female companion struggle to survive while the White boxing establishment looks for ways to knock him down.” The “establishment” marshaled a search party to promote what was to have been the “Fight of the Century.” In 1910, former undefeated heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries was lured out of retirement. “I feel obligated to the sporting public at least to make an effort to reclaim the heavyweight championship for the White race, and demonstrate that a White man is king of them all” said Jeffries. Jeffries may have been the Great White Hope a century ago, but his replacement, Donald Trump has amassed a far better record. After he knocked out 17 wannabees in the Republican Presidential primary, he scored a TKO over the first woman to seriously approach the ring. Hillary Rodham Clinton fought her way up to the championship bout. She won more than enough votes to be elected, but as is characteristic in the fight business, she lost on a technical-

ity. The founding fathers created the electoral system to favor rich White males. This newest champ is a bit pudgy and a tad old to be in the ring, but he is as crafty as they come. He uses all the dirty tricks of boxing to his advantage and he concocts political poisons that

lay bare every weakness of his opponents. Donald “Agent Orange” Trump hits his foes below the belt, even when the referee is watching. He has a mean head fake. You can think you caught him in any of the hundreds of lies he spews weekly and he will manufacture a new tragedy to make you forgot the most recent misdeed. Agent Orange is no stranger to hanging onto the ropes, rabbit punching, head-butting or any other sudden or seditious movements. He uses his elbows to throw blows and his thumbs to violate the rules pugilists pledge to obey. Donald Trump is the dirtiest fighter ever known to the game. He’s

a heavyweight who specializes in arranging bouts in the bantamweight, flyweight and middleweight categories. Agent Orange even hits girls. Jack Johnson had a thing for White women, but Donald Trump respects no woman. The darker they get, the worse they get treated. He delivers low blows to the boxing cups of the guys and grabs the girls by their G-strings. Trump is an expert in the UFC and WWE methods and brings those foreign rules into the four corners and turnbuckles of the boxing ring. When it comes to pre-fight hype, he makes Muhammad Ali look like an amateur. Agent Orange picks an opponent, makes them public enemy number one and then spreads lies that make his fans run to his rallies, foaming at the mouth. Trump is always a sore winner because victimization is the game he excels in. One day though, Donald “Agent Orange” Trump, like all fighters, is going to hit the canvass. The crowds will turn on him, and the debt he owes to Queen Karma will have to be settled. Be leery, because that day is coming soon. Trump can’t be content winning, so who knows how unhinged he’ll be when fatigue and frustration take him to the mat. Jack Johnson finally lost to the only unbeatable force in the United States of America; racism. Oddly, racism will turn on Trump and consume him as well. It was “Mighty White” of Donald to pardon Jack Johnson the question is who will pardon this Great White Hope.

award-winning journalist.

The Fight has begun From the Capitol By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

The midterm elections are now over and unprecedented numbers of people in Texas and throughout the country cast their ballots for candidates of their choice. I am extremely grateful to all of those who voted to return me to Congress, and that voted for my fellow Democrats. Voters demonstrated tremendous passion during the period running up to the election. It is extremely important that the hard work and enthusiasm that captured the minds and souls of so many continue. For while, the election is over the storms continue, and they must be confronted and stopped.

We are still faced with local and national political climates in which some elected officials practice voter suppression without shame or reservation. Their methods are simply little more than modern-day poll taxes. Some state legislators utilize gerrymandering when creating congressional districts. Their rancid efforts are designed to keep minorities and progressives in a weakened position in the halls of government in Washington. There seems to be an attitude, held by some with wealth and power, that is tainted by a distrust and contempt for those they consider the “other,” people

one’s character and her mental state in relationship to those around her. The play was powerful and intense but it needed to be in order to make the impact that it did. Despite the sternness of the play, there was a strong sense of intimacy as well. This at times made me feel as if I was invading their privacy. I was fixated from the very beginning until the very end. Such a captivating performance by the cast of “The Champion”: Deontay Roaf as singer Nina Simone Justin White as guitarist Al Schackman Lorenzo Hunt as bassist Christopher White Lawrence Patterson as percussionist Bobby Armstrong. In the early 60’s, Nina Simone and her band resort to an eatery in North Carolina during a snowstorm. They arrive with expectations of camaraderie and a hot meal but encounter more. They befriend the waitress there who becomes enthralled with their conversations. The conversations take off in many directions and lead all involved on an emotional roller coaster. No one there will leave the same. Do not expect a musical production from “The Champion.” As a matter of fact, there is only one song performed in the play. It focuses more on Nina Sim-

who do not look like them, who do not dine with them, whose first language is not the one that they speak and whose faith is different from the one that they profess. At the root of President Trump’s desire to end birthright citizenship is distaste for those that are different, and a fundamental misunderstanding of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution. Even members of his own party have said to the president that an attempt by him to deny citizenship to those born inside the borders of the United States violates our founding document. If that were not enough, the Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, wants census forms, and those who actually interview residents, to ask whether or not respondents are citizens of the United States. When challenged on the origin of the proposed question, Ross said that

its inclusion was requested by the Justice Department. When asked about Ross’ statement, a Justice Department spokesperson contradicted the secretary. The question of whether or not such a question should be included is currently being litigated in federal court and is being watch very closely by me and other advocates of equitable voting rights. Those who advocate including the question are aware that it would have harmful effects on minority participation in the Census, particularly among those people who, even while being citizens, have someone in their households who is not. These people are fearful that the government will use the information to harass them and their relatives and many believe it will be less stressful if they do not participate in the 2020 county.

NABJ appalled by Trump's continued disrespect of African American women journalists

April Ryan President Donald Trump rejected National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) member and CNN White House reporter Abby Phillip's question as "stupid" on national television. Phillip asked the President if he wanted acting U.S. Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to "rein in Mueller," referring to Robert Mueller the special counsel investigating possible Russian influence in the 2016 election. Whitaker has been critical of the Mueller investigation. NABJ members and other journalists have taken to social media expressing their frustration with the president's continuous attacks. "The most powerful man in the free world is verbally abusing

She’s also an interior design expert who hosted HGTV’s Spice Up My My first time guest Judge Lauren Lake is as ef·fer·ves·cent as she is on TV. I invited Lauren Lake into the Valder Beebe Show to share a little more about her show and her personal beliefs (which are rooted and positively strong). I invite you to listen in on her interview [SoundCloud.com/valderbeebeshow]. It’s safe to say Lauren Lake isn’t quite like other TV courtroom judges. She earned her law degree at Wayne State University in Detroit and she’s a member of the New York, New Jersey and Michigan bars with concentrations in family, criminal and entertainment law. Dear Alma,

He was my man

My husband was killed in a car accident. We were high school sweethearts and married over 30 years. I would say we were very happy and secure. We were also best friends. I was so heartbroken at my husband’s death that I decided on a closed casket. His family wanted an open casket. I agreed to open during the viewing and closed at the start of the funeral. The decision was a comfort to his mother. During the visitation, his administrative assistant cried so loud and hard that all eyes were on her. When she went by to pay her last respects, she leaned over and kissed my husband. I think that was totally disrespectful. It’s been three months, and I want to contact her to find out what exactly was going on between her and my husband. What do you think?

sorrow. You’ll feel a variety of emotions; that’s a part of the grieving process. It’s understandable if you feel guilt, angry, confusion and fear all at the same time. This may become your new normal. That’s ok; it will take a great deal of courage and strength to labor through this tragedy. Now, to answer your question: I think it’s important that

This doesn’t mean that they had some type of physical relationship. He could have been a great mentor to her, looked up to and admired. With all due respect, you’re trying to cross a burning bridge when it’s unnecessary for you to get to the other side. I think you’re mad and angry over your husband’s sudden death, and you’re looking for someone onto whom you can transfer just a portion of your pain. Don’t lose sight that the two of you were together for a long, long time and flourished in a fantastic relationship. Shower yourself in the blessing of having such a wonderful marriage for so many years. Fuel your spirit with joyful memories, daydreaming of the embarrassing and funny experiences you two shared. For years to come, expect your grief to flow like a raging river, and other times like a running stream. Eventually, you’ll find your life raft. Hold on; don’t let go. Meanwhile, make an appointment to see your clergy or sit with a grief support group.
