AMBER GUYGER TO STAND TRIAL FOR MURDER From Staff Reports

A Dallas grand jury returned a murder indictment against former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, 30, for the murder of businessman Botham Jean, 26. Ms. Guyger entered Mr. Jean’s apartment on September 6, 2018 and he was killed. Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson said that over 300 people were interviewed and after months of investigations and pouring over information, her office was ready to present the case to the grand jury. Adding that she had confidence that incoming district attorney and former judge John Creuzot would continue the work that her administration had begun, DA Johnson said that critics who thought the case should have been presented earlier did not alter her office's course because her team was working for justice and not for expediency or for political reasons. Mr. Jean’s relatives, including his mother, returned to Dallas from their home in Saint Lucia, for the proceedings. Speaking for her family about the case, Mr. Jean’s mother, Allison, said that justice is what they are seeking. "Give me justice for my son because he does not deserve what he got," Allison Jean said, flanked by her attorneys and Dallas activists in the lobby of a downtown Dallas office building. "I will not sit back and see that justice does not prevail." An analyst at PricewatershouseCoopers, Mr. Jean was at home at SouthSide Flats Apartments when he was killed by Ms. Guyger, who also lived in the same apartments but on a different floor. Ms. Guyger's defense is that she went to the wrong apartment and killed him because she thought he was a burglar.

The Dallas NAACP President Aubrey C. Hooper, released the following statement on the murder indictment of Amber Guyger. "We are pleased with the decision of the grand jury to indict Amber Guyger for murder for the killing of Mr. Botham Shem Jean. "This is the next step in securing a verdict that will be favorable to the evidence that will be presented by the District Attorney’s Office. We would like to thank the District Attorney’s Office for the thorough investigation that they have conducted in gathering evidence in the pursuit of justice. We call on the community to remain calm and let the criminal proceedings take its due course. However, we ask that you join us in continued prayer and support for the family and friends of Mr. Botham Shem Jean. "The Dallas NAACP will remain vigilant in monitoring the proceedings of this case and look forward to justice being rendered.” Texas District Judge Tammy Kemp, was

Botham Jean

assigned Friday to preside over the murder trial of Ms. Guyger. Prior to her election, she was a prosecutor for the Dallas County District Attorney’s office. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma Law School, Judge Kemp is a Democrat. A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Concord Baptist Church in Dallas, the judge was recently re-elected to a second term on the 204th Judicial District Court bench, where she began serving in 2015. Judge Kemp was a top prosecutor in the officer of Craig Watkins, who was Texas’ first elected African-American District Attorney. After Ms. Guyger was booked into Jail Friday afternoon but released on a $200,000 bond, the judge ordered her to surrender her passport and not to travel outside Texas without court approval. MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith

Publisher

In class one day there was a conversation about sweet potato pies. Now I have my opinion about pies because many who talk about how good they can bake a pie are just doing like the Godfather of Soul James Brown sang about, “talking loud and saying nothing.” Even one of the male students talked about how good he was at baking, as I gave him the side eye. I learned at a young age how to make a good sweet potato pie. I used to take them to school when I was in elementary, I think they call it junior high now, seventh and eighth grade. By the time I got to East Orange High School (NJ) my way around the kitchen was well known. There were friends who brought their special dishes to school for lunch. One liked bringing those Rice Krispy Treats, another would bring potato salad, loaded

tion drifted to sweet potato pies and what we each did to make ours special. It was a great conversation for me because I love hearing someone discussing their passion. And I learned something from him while I shared one of my mother’s secrets. He stumped me with one tidbit and when I told him that I make my own crusts, well, he had to stand down a minute! Now we’re going to put our knowledge and years of baking to the test. You see, on January 21, 2019, at the Realizing the Dream Healthy Living Expo, there will be a Sweet Potato Pie Contest. I know that Ms. Tina, at Yo Momma’s Kitchen on Corinth makes a mean sweet potato pie. It is absolutely fabulous. Then Co’ka, of Mo’ka n Co’ka fame, talks a good

game about her pie but I haven’t tasted it yet. And, if you go into most Black-owned restaurants, like Sweet Georgia Brown, Two Podners, and South Dallas Cafe; you’re gonna see those pies, and they aren’t pumpkin. So we’re calling all sweet potato pie aficionados for January 21, 2019 at the African American Museum. We’re looking for the best Sweet Potato Pie and we don’t care where it comes from, as long as it is not store bought. There are three categories: traditional (my fave), Specialty (you know some folks use pecans, marshmallows, etc) and then the Heart Healthy One (especially for diabetics/people with health issues). We’re going to have celebrity judges and then attendees at the Expo can purchase a slice.

The winners will receive prizes, of course, and they will be featured in Messenger Media Publications. So much more is going on that day, in addition to the Sweet Potato Pie Competition. We want our community to get healthy: physically, spiritually, financially, mentally, socially and holistically. That’s right, we have to educate, enlighten, inform, inspire and also entertain, as we grow and build better, stronger families, communities and ultimately society. There will be seminars, health screenings, voter education, weight loss info, vegetarian/vegan info, financial literacy, and more. Sen. Harris expected to announce intentions By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia

California Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris has never been known to pull-punches. Harris is viewed by those who know her as someone who’s “as tough as they come.” And, she knows that any bid for president in 2020 against the bombastic Donald Trump will take a bit of rhinoceros skin to deal with. “It’s a very serious decision,” Harris told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” cohost Mika Brzezinski during an onstage conversation at the Know Your Value conference in San Francisco. “Over the holiday, I will make that decision with my family.” As she told NNPA Newswire in September during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference, she’s keenly aware of the challenges a barrier-breaking campaign will entail. “Let’s be honest. It’s going to be ugly,” Harris said. “When you break things, it is painful. And you get cut. And you bleed.” Harris and her colleague from New Jersey, Sen. Cory Booker have long been seen as a possible Democratic ticket in 2020, though no one has speculated which might run as president. “This is a critical time,” Booker told NNPA Newswire in September at the conference. “The CBC is the conscience of Congress and we have not yet achieved the American Dream which is increasingly out of reach for many. The Dream is still deferred,” he said. Harris, who, like Booker, has gone from rising star to serious presidential contender, said there is plenty of work ahead. “It’s about where we came from and where we’ve got to go,” she told NNPA Newswire. “This is a pivotal moment. I think we all know when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. talked

Sen. Kamala Harris about the Dream, it wasn’t about being asleep,” Harris said. “It was about being awake.” In her interview with MSNBC, Harris expressed frustration over the slow progress of the Secure Elections Act, which she introduced in March, along with co-sponsor Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma. The bipartisan legislation would give the Department of Homeland Security responsibility for ensuring secure elections and shoring up election infrastructure against cyber-attacks and would establish an independent advisory panel of experts to develop guidelines on election cyber security. Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, who currently serves as the leader of the Senate, has not yet brought the legislation to

the floor for a vote. Harris said she has been told that is at the White House’s request. “First of all, let’s be clear about the fact Russia did interfere in the [2016] election of the president of the United States,” Harris told Brzezinski. “Flawed though it may be, we designed a beautiful system of democracy, and one symbol of that is that we have free and open

elections. “When a foreign government chooses to manipulate our democracy knowing that would compromise our strength and our perception of our strength, you would think leaders would say ‘No, we are going to do everything we can to strengthen and to give ourselves the immunity we need to be free from that kind of manipulation.’ Yet, it’s not happening.”

QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

That Other Green Book Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen are garnering rave reviews for the new movie; “Green Book.” The film constructs the hazards and caveats that came with traveling in the segregated South during the 1950’s. What I do like about it, is that it does stay close to the historical truths. History never lies, but some of the people who write it do take license with the truth. A few years ago a Black mother by the name of Roni Dean-Burren, was on her game and peeped the game the State of Texas was playing. When Cody, her 15-year-old son and student at Houston’s Pearland High came home, he pointed out what he believed to be a wrong worded photo caption to his mother. This now infamous textbook, sanctioned by the Texas State Board of Education featured a caption which read; “Slave ships brought millions of workers from Africa to the southern United States to work on agricultural plantations.” Damn! Really!!!! In its historical context, this misrepresentation is tantamount to saying that Dr. Martin Luther King walked out onto the balcony of the Lorraine Motel for a cigarette and caught a whizzing bullet as it was passing by. Why even mention James Earl Ray? In other words, a truth perverted is just an outright lie! We should all thank mothers like Roni Dean-Burren for (1) being astute enough to catch this egregious attempt to “Whitewash’ history and (2) for modeling the proper use of social media; which is best used to create revolutionary communities through the conveyance of significant information. This is the real power of Facebook. Now I know that you think Facebook is

fantastic because you get 350 people who don’t really know or like you to send their “best” on your birthday. But this example proves that the urgency of now dictates the need for a new paradigm in utilizing the advances of communicative technology. It’s not as if we have not had a workable form of Civil Rights activism through “social media” before. The efforts just weren’t as technologically savvy, or as easily or widely disseminated. In 1936, Harlem mailman and union worker, Victor Hugo Green and his wife, developed a publication they saw a need for. “The Negro Motorist Green Book” served as a travel guide and atlas to arm Black families with traveling information as they drove through “hotbeds” where segregation was strictly enforced. Google “Sundown Towns,” and read the history of those places where African-Americans were prohibited after dark. If you thought declaring martial law with nightly curfews like Ferguson or Baltimore was something new for Black folks… think again. Green surveyed his network of fellow postal workers around the country to

suggest and advertise towns where Coloreds could get hotels, dining, or night clubs; without being arrested or lynched. Green printed an average of 15,000 copies per year. It was an idea he borrowed from Jews in America who were also prominently featured in the all-too-familiar signs in the Deep South that read: No Jews, No Dogs, No Niggers! Eventually, The Green Book evolved to include essays and journalistic works. In 1948, Green wrote that the need for his book would surely diminish soon. He died in 1960 at the age of 68. The Civil Rights Bill was not passed until 1964 and the 30-year-old Green Book printed its last copy in 1966. Maybe someone needs to publish a Green Face Book. From the looks of it, we ain’t safe or significant in swanky Ivy League dormitories. Angry or suspicious white women call the cops on us for legally using a public park. We are not even safe in the sanctity of our own apartments. RIP Brother Botham. Go see the Green Book, but don’t make any sudden moves, before or after it gets dark. Ain’t much changed! Vincent L. Remembering President George H.W. Bush From the Capitol By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

At the funeral tribute for his late wife, Barbara, who died last April, former President George H.W. Bush sat pensively in his wheelchair near her casket, patiently greeting those who had come to mourn the woman whom he had married seventy-three years earlier. It seemed improbable that they were no longer together. That he was now without her. He had once told an interviewer that if his wife passed before he did, she would be the first person that he wanted to see when he arrived in heaven. On last Friday evening, the former Republican president, who voted in the 2016 presidential election

for a Democrat, received his wish when his beloved Barbara asked an angel to play a harp, calling her husband home to her side. As the 41st supreme commander of our country, President Bush worked with legislators in both the Democratic and Republican parties. He made decisions that he believed were in the best interests of the country, even if they cost him an

He’s Here

election, as raising taxes to balance the budget did in the 1992 presidential contest when he was defeated by President Bill Clinton. The two later became close friends, and worked together on projects for the benefit of their fellow citizens. The privileged son of a United States Senator, President Bush, who was born in Massachusetts and raised on the east coast, rightly decided to make Texas the place where he would raise his family, and pursue his destiny. He entered politics, running for office, serving his party. Though unsuccessful as a candidate a number of times in the beginning of his political life, he was not deterred.

He continued on, and persevered, becoming vice-president, and then assuming the highest elected office in our land. It was not in him to quit! President Bush will be remembered in history for a plethora of accomplishments, among them being one of only two presidents to witness his son become the nation’s commander-in-chief when his eldest son, George W. Bush, became president in 2000. The elder Bush wept at the inauguration. And now, just six years short of living a full century, President George H.W. Bush has departed. Yet, the memories of what he stood for, and of what he accomplished shall remain with us, and shall guide us as we continue to enhance our democracy.

Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’s 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. Serving as a representative since 1993, when she was the first registered nurse elected to Congress.

THAT CELEBRITY INTERVIEW: Ernie Hudson

My energy of greatness interview today comes as Ernie Hudson and Valerie Pettiford (profiled in a separate IMessenger article). I was enthralled by the deep tones of Ernie Hudson’s voice yet I was most impressed by his graciousness during the interview. These stars aka celebrities add joy to my job and my hopes they add joy to your perusal. Ernie Hudson has had a long and successful career on the big and small screen. He has appeared in dozens of film and television roles throughout his career. Now he stars in BET Networks Carl Weber’s The Family Business, he plays L.C. Duncan, the patriarch and CEO of the Duncan family business. Ernie Hudson is a character actor perhaps best known for his roles as

Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters film series, Sergeant Darryl Albrecht in The Crow, and Warden Leo Glynn on HBO’s Oz. Hudson is currently starring in BET Networks Carl Weber’s The Family Business, based on best-selling author Carl Weber crime drama book series and co-produced by Ernie Hudson. Just a teaser…. This is summer camp, so you’re only in it for a minute, on your way to bigger and better things. You say Calvin is tawdry, I say Calvin’s non-swag is none of your business. Okay, he likes to wear a roller or an earring every now and again. What if Beyoncé did it, you’d call it a trend. LOL. I have a feeling you are always slammed, glammed and got it going on—on the regular. That’s a wonderful thing, this world requires all kinds, but that’s not Calvin. Does that mean he can’t do his job? No. Does that mean he won’t ever be the boss? Yes and that’s all right with him. Calvin sounds like he won’t be wearing any skinny jeans any time soon. I ain’t mad at him and you’ve got bigger fish to fry, you are clearly passing through. On those tough “I don’t think I can make it days,” those kids, potential foodies, chefs, restaurant entrepreneurs will remember your directions, professionalism and ability to make it look good while you’re doing it. I commend you for that. On those “this is too hard, I’m gonna quit days,” they’ll think about Calvin and say to themselves, if he can do it, I can do it too, face washed, teeth brushed, without a roller in their hair. Alma
