HALL: While on Others Thou Art Calling! Quit Playin’
By Vincent Hall If you have roots in the African American church or its musical litany, the tag line to this shessay (short essay), is obvious. But just in case you’re Afro-Centrically challenged, let me tether the tag to this thesis or treatise. In the old Black church, amidst the rhythmic foot-pats on wooden floors and pianos that usually needed tuning; “Do not pass me by” was a very familiar hymn. “Pass me not, oh gentle Savior, Hear my humble cry. While on others Thou are calling; Do not pass me by.” Many in the Black ecumenical community believe that President Barack Obama should “pardon” Dr. Jeremiah Wright (Daddy J) before he leaves the house that will be “Whiter” and less congenial under President-reject Donald Trump. Our POTUS is wisely providing clemency for prisoners who have languished in prisons under the age of mass incarceration. But I and others want him to prominently and publicly embrace his former pastor; the man who helped shape his spiritual and cultural psyche. Obama’s bestselling book; “The Audacity of Hope,” was inspired by a Daddy J sermon, and the two men were apparently very close. Dr. Wright, whose life and legacy have been smeared and small-changed by a devious political plot in 2008, deserves to be exonerated. The Pastor Emeritus of the Trinity United Church suffered a stroke soon after his September visit to Dallas and is un-
4
dergoing rehabilitation. The heartbreak and the stress of the last two terms is undoubtedly a mitigating factor in the downturn of his health. Jeremiah Wright is a throwback to those petulant preachers and gospel gladiators, whose vociferous and righteous indignation set “the captives” free. In a 2009 speech that “Fox Noose” used to further impugn his character, he declared unapologetically that America is “the land of greed and the home of the slave.”
Barack Obama and Rev. Wright
America is internationally known better for its greed than its grace, and America will always be detested for its history of chattel slavery. Quite like the Germans bear the burden of the Holocaust... Slavery and the Holocaust are travesties that can never be forgotten. American history is constantly being re-crafted and canonized. Some historians have conveniently developed amnesia or are in some stage of nostalgic dementia. We don’t like prophets like Jeremiah who defy demands to gloss over our national sins. Black preachers, Daddy J supreme among them, have always been the couriers of these hallowed gospels. Preachers hold independent positions
that allow them to tell that truth while remaining unfettered and unmolested to some degree. Parishioners pay ministers and should expect them to advance the social justice mandate deemed requisite in the epilogue of Matthew 25. Thumb through your own mental rolodex and recall that there are no American human/civil rights victories that are not rooted in the church. Courageous Black preachers, White Abolitionists of the Methodism, down to Jeremiah Wright are ministers who made a difference have been loud and proud of the liberating theology they’ve been licensed and ordained to proclaim. There will be detractors who argue that to reunite with Daddy J would blemish President Obama’s legacy. These same scary Negroes were silently complicit as the GOP demolished Wright’s reputation. I would conjecture that Barack Hussein Obama, without the vision and vigilance of a Jeremiah Wright, is a just a tall, lanky professional Black man with a funny name and big ears. Eight years of total disrespect have proven that some White folks and especially the Trump “Deplorables” will never approve of Obama…regardless. Most political practitioners understood the rationale of Obama’s swift offload of Wright and the benefits it accrued. But now, and with all due respect to my brother and my President, I would ask that while you are calling on others to pardon, do not pass Daddy J by. If Mitt Romney and Donald Trump can share a candlelit, televised repast, you can certainly advance this act of comity and Christianity. Vincent Hall is an author, acivist and award winning columnist.

Johnson becomes Dallas District Attorney
From Staff Reports
Word on the street circulated for weeks about former judge Faith Johnson being a finalist to succeed former Dallas County District Attorney Susan Hawk, who resigned due to medical reasons. After several months of speculation, inuendoes, threats of lawsuits and public attacks Dallas County finally has a new District Attorney. On Tuesday, Governor Greg Abbott announced the appointment of Faith Johnson as the Dallas County District Attorney for a term set to expire December 31, 2018, or until a successor shall be duly elected and qualified. This appointment makes Johnson only the second African American and second woman to hold the post. “Throughout her career, Faith has proven herself a dedicated public servant, most notably as a criminal prosecutor where she attained the status of Chief Felony Prosecutor during her time in the Dallas County District Attorney's Office,” said Governor Abbott. “As a former prosecutor, district judge, and while serving on the Department of Public Safety Commission, Faith has shown a commitment to law enforcement and the rule of law. She has devoted herself to defending some of our most vulnerable Texans, and I am confident that in her new role as District Attorney, Faith will continue to fight for the people of Dallas County and ensure that justice is served.” Elected officials, organizations and community leaders offered statements in response to Johnson's appointment as Dallas County District Attorney: “Governor Abbott has made an exceptional choice with the appointment of Faith Johnson for Dallas County District Attorney. I would like to commend the Governor for his deliberate effort to bring forth the best candidate to serve the great people of Dallas County. Throughout Faith’s career she has exhibited the utmost professionalism and a steadfast commitment to
6
upholding our rule of law. I have no doubt that she will thrive in this new position and dedicate herself to protecting the rights of all citizens in our community. I look forward to working with Faith to make our community safer and stronger.” – Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX) “The Governor’s appointment of Faith
Johnson as Dallas District Attorney demonstrates his unwavering commitment to the integrity of the judicial system in Texas. Faith’s hard work and many years of dedicated public service make her the ideal candidate to head the District Attorney’s office. Faith will bring new ideas and fresh leadership, seeing beyond the obvious for a brighter future for Dallas County. I am confident in Faith’s ability to uphold the duties of this office and serve as a tireless advocate on behalf of the people of Dallas.” – Senator Don Huffines (R-Dallas) “Governor Abbott’s decision to appoint Faith Johnson as Dallas District Attorney is a testament to what he values in public service. Throughout her career, Faith has exhibited a strong commitment to the Dallas community and to Dallas law enforcement. The Dallas Police Association could not be more pleased with the Governor’s appointment and we look forward to working with Faith as she assumes this important role.” – Frederick Frazier, President, Dallas Police Association "Faith Johnson's impressive public service record and commitment to uphold-
ing the rule of law makes her an excellent choice to serve on behalf of the people of Dallas County. As a former district judge and prosecutor, she exhibited the utmost integrity and fought to ensure justice was served. I applaud Governor Abbott's appointment and his choice is affirming to women and people of color that there is indeed a place for all Americans in his administration. I believe that Faith will restore stability to the Dallas County District Attorney's office and exact due process of the law in a fair and unbiased method! That is always a win for Dallas County and ultimately for Texas!" – T.D. Jakes, Bishop, The Potter’s House Johnson has the distinction of not only being the first African-American female district criminal judge elected in Texas, where she served as the presiding judge for 17 years, but also being the first African-American female to attain the highly regarded status of Chief Felony Prosecutor during her time in the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. She has handled thousands of felony cases ranging from drug possession and theft to sexual assault, child abuse, and capital murder. After leaving the bench, Ms. Johnson practiced with a non-profit law firm for two years before establishing Faith Johnson & Associates, L.L.P. in 2009. Ms. Johnson is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Dallas Bar Association, J.L. Turner Legal Association, Committee for a Qualified Judiciary, Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Christian Chamber of Commerce, among other professional organizations. She is secretary and a board member of The Potter’s House of Dallas, and a past board member of several non-profit organizations. In 2014, Ms. Johnson was appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry to the Texas Public Safety Commission, where she is one of five Commissioners who oversee homeland security, border patrol, and terrorism in Texas.

Mother of Joyce Ann Brown celebrates 93 years! Ruby Lee Kelley, affectionately known as Madea, will be 93 years young Thursday, December 8, 2016. The mother of legendary criminal justice warrior Joyce Ann Brown, was known to many because she was always at the side of her daughter. 'Madea' was in the courtroom throughout Ms. Brown's trial that led to her wrongful incarceration and through the highly publicized fight for freedom. After 9 years, 5 months and 24 days, Joyce Ann Brown was exonerated and released into the arms of 'Madea'. Those who knew Ms. Brown, knew that family was everything and she never traveled or did anything without getting a time to sit down and hug her mother. Mrs. Kelley is now in hospice but still a fighter. She still resides in Dallas with her family. Joyce Ann Brown passed June 2015 at the age of 68.

MALVEAUX: How Americans lost Faith The Last Word By Dr. Julianne Malveaux
NNPA Newswire Columnist
Professor Deva Woodly teaches political science at the New School for Social Research in New York. During a recent talk, she shared that trust in our nation’s institutions is at an all-time low. That is, perhaps, why that man who currently holds the title of President-elect was able to prevail over someone far more qualified in the November election. Using Gallup Poll data from June 2016, Professor Woodly notes that the military is our nation’s most trusted institution — 73 percent trust them, while our Congress is the least trusted with only 7 percent support. Fifty-six percent of us trust the police, forty-one percent trust the church, just 36 percent support the President, and only 23 percent trust organized labor or the criminal justice system. One in five trusts television news or newspapers. In a nutshell, it does not appear that we trust anybody! This lack of trust results in a lack of involvement in civil society. If you don’t trust the church, how involved will you be in it? If you don’t trust your union, will you do much more than pay your dues? Only two in five trust the medical profession — do you believe your doctors? Just one in four of us trust banks. If we don’t trust institutions, do we trust each other? And if we don’t trust each other, how do we come together to organize, to resist the corrosiveness of the callous, racist, misogynistic leadership that Mr. Trump offers our nation. The man has no regard for the truth, and he has pandered to our collective mistrust by describing everything as “rigged.” Now he is saying that he really won the popular vote because “millions” of people voted fraudulently. He has no proof of it, and he ought to be ashamed for lying, except for if he had any shame he never
would have run for President. Between fake news and mistrust, there are those who believe him, which further erodes institutional trust. Our nation is on a downward spiral, and there is no soft landing unless we rediscover the ways we once connected, and revive them. Professor Woodly and I joined Michael Eric Dyson and Columbia University Professor and moderator Fred Harris in a New School-sponsored panel on Obama,
Too many people thought that their actions had no consequences, and that whatever they did had no meaning. Their impressions may have been shaped by the smugness many of us saw coming from the Clinton campaign that behaved as if their victory was inevitable. Race and Politics. Anyone who has read Dyson or me would not be surprised at our analysis. Fred Harris, too, has written about the Obama presidency in his book, “The Price of the Ticket: Barack Obama and the Rise and Fall of Black Politics” (Oxford University Press, 2012). Professor Woodly’s analysis stood out for me, though, because she talked about community distrust and ways it disconnects people from politics, the polls, and outcomes. Too many people thought that their actions had no consequences, and that whatever they did had no meaning. Their impressions may have been shaped by

the smugness many of us saw coming from the Clinton campaign that behaved as if their victory was inevitable. Just 107,000 votes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania separated Hillary Clinton from victory. Recounts are not likely to sway the election, and the “if I coulda, woulda, shoulda” post-mortem around the resources that should have been used to energize the base makes no difference now. The fact is that Hillary Clinton should have won this election. She didn’t, because the village she says it takes to save a child has been fractured. Instead of talking to each other, too many are texting each other. Instead of talking to voters, the Clinton campaign was spending millions on ads that vilified Trump instead of lifting up Clinton. The election is over. Recounts are important for the sake of accountability, but I’m not sure they will make a difference in the electoral outcome. I support the recounts, and also an electoral audit. I support reform that makes it easier, not harder for people to vote. I believe that there are things that can be done in the next two years to take our democracy back. I refuse to wring my hands and dry my eyes about Mr. Trump and his “victory” anymore. What must happen now is a return to community. I was heartened to see so many millennials at the New School panel, young people asking what to do next. The answer – we must rebuild community. We must organize, organize, organize, and agitate, agitate, agitate. he man who calls himself our President-elect is an unabashed liar who some say “deserves a chance.” Give him a chance, if you will, but hold him accountable for his lies, his conflicts of interest, and his racist appointments of Steve Bannon and Senator Sessions (DAL). Our community, revived, can do no less. Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. Her latest book “Are We Better Off? Race, Obama and Public Policy” is available via www.amazon. com for booking, wholesale inquiries or for more info visitwww.juliannemalveaux.com.

Demand your inheritance Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington
This column is all about not putting limits on a limitless God. In church, the sermon was all about how we, as finite creatures, do a pretty good job of trying to put the infinite being of God into some way, shape or form that we can understand. The problem with that is we can’t do it. Our brain won’t let us comprehend all knowing, all powerful, everywhere since before time began and after it stops. You see the terms “all,” “before,” and “after,” presuppose there is a limit to time and space and power and understanding and things. It is the way of a finite being which happens to be us. These are human characteristics and it is how we have come to rationalize life. It begins at birth. It ends at death. But does it? Pastor was teaching that as long as we operate that way, we limit what we think we’re able to do. His point and mine is don’t put man’s limits on God’s promises. You see each one of us has an image of ourselves on the inside of who we are and what we can do. It has been shaped by friends and family, situations and circumstances, what we want and what we have. For many of us that image is in direct conflict with what God sees and knows He has placed within us. Let me put it this way. Would you ask a homeless man for $100? Of course not! You wouldn’t ask, because you wouldn’t believe he had it. So if you do not believe there is greatness in you, dare I say you wouldn’t ask God for it. And there’s the rub. I am now of the opinion, it’s time for all of us to put demands on God. I am not being arrogant or presumptuous. I am trying to be humble, respectful and obedient. God has been saying forever to ask him. As a matter of fact, He says, ask, seek, and knock. In each instance your action is promised a positive reaction. Don’t ask. Don’t get. I’m really talking about mustard seed stuff here. Your faith dictates what you ask for. Do you have enough faith to take the limits off God and to ask Him; to demand from Him the inheritance that is yours as delivered by the finished work of Jesus Christ?
12
I understand this can be tricky stuff. And it’s not easy. We put obstacles in our way when it comes to simply receiving the grace and blessings of God. I’m merely pointing out that we have some say in this. We have a spiritual obligation to not limit God. The solution is to recognize those things we do that are subtle, but devastating to our achieving God’s purpose for us. Fear limits God. If you think the answer will be no, y ou won’t ask. Unbelief limits God. If you don’t believe it’s possible, then all things become impossible. Disobedience limits God. If you disobey, you don’t think you have the right to ask for anything. And comparison limits God. If you feel unworthy and less than those who have more, you’ll accept what you have and nothing more. How? Why? By negating a willingness to believe that we are truly blessed and highly favored, made in the image of almighty God and destined to be great for Him. You know there is fear of failure and fear of success, both with the same result. I call it, “the do nothing”. It’s comfortable and you can handle that. Who wants to expect everything when the world has taught you that you don’t deserve anything? My proof of what I’m saying is in Matthew 4:11, after the devil tempted Jesus with everything in the world and He refused in the name of God. “The devil left Him and angels came and attended Him.” In the name of the devil, Jesus was aware enough to say, no, thank you. And because He knew where His bless-
ings lay, God sent angels to attend Him and in God’s name gave Him everything the devil had promised. Think about that. Are you making any demands on God? He’s just waiting on you to recognize He’s your God, daring you to ask so He can give. Without the question, without the demand, it’s an unfulfilled dream, a mountain too big to move, a desire never met. And this I know. Psalm 37:4-5 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the lord, trust in Him and He will do this;” You gotta believe.

I Messenger ACA Marketplace open Enrollment period runs through Jan. 31, 2017 The fourth open enrollment period into the Health Insurance Marketplace begins Nov. 1, 2016 and runs through Jan. 31, 2017. Through the Marketplace, individuals are able to go to one place to search for health coverage options and choose from the health plans available in their area. The best source for information about the Marketplace is the website www.healthcare. gov. The website is available 24/7 and provides information on how the Marketplace works, what the benefits are and key deadlines. Individuals can also call 1.800.318.2596 to speak with trained customer service representatives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For individuals needing further assistance, Parkland Health & Hospital System will have certified application counselors available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday thru Friday in Parkland’s Business Office to answer questions about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and provide help enrolling in the Marketplace. The Business Office is located on the first floor of the old Parkland OPC, 5201 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, 75235. Certified application counselors will not be available at any of Parkland’s Community Oriented Primary Care health centers. “We will have a limited number of certified application counselors available to assist patients with the enrollment process,” said Rhonda Miller, Parkland’s Senior Vice President of Revenue Cycle. “We encourage those who may qualify for the Marketplace to log into the government’s website or speak to one of the government’s trained customer service representatives.” Most people must have qualifying health coverage or pay a fee for the months they don’t have insurance. Health coverage exemptions are available
14
DECEMBER 9, 2016 based on a number of circumstances, including certain hardships, some life events, health coverage or financial status and membership in some groups. Additional information on exemptions is available at www.healthcare.gov. In addition, a special enrollment period (SEP) outside of the yearly open enrollment exists for those with certain life events including losing health coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby or adopting child. If an individual qualifies for an SEP, they usually have up to 60 days following the event to enroll in a plan. If they miss that window, they have to wait until the next open enrollment period to apply. Those who may need assistance can contact Parkland’s Customer Service department at 214.590.4900. JACKSON: Castro paradoxes can’t be reduced to black, white
SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER by REV. JESSE JACKSON, SR Fidel Castro, Cuba’s leader for almost six decades, has died at 90 in Havana. USA Today’s headline on Monday read, “No Mourning in Miami,” noting the continued bitterness of those who left Cuba. The Washington Post featured testimonies condemning Castro’s authoritarian government. A revolutionary, a brutal dictator who sided with the USSR in the Cold War, a sponsor of guerilla wars, leader of a failed economy — Castro’s death has unleashed the full indictment against him. We need a broader view, a more clear-eyed analysis of the man and his times. Why was this leader of a small island nation 90 miles off our coast celebrated across Africa and Latin America? How could he survive the determined efforts of the U.S. government to oust him, outlasting 11 American presidents? Why did Nelson Mandela praise and thank him? Castro led the Cuban Revolution against a brutal dictator to victory in 1959. Always more a devotee of Marti — the Cuban poet and patriot who led the revolt against Spain — than of Marx, Castro set out to nationalize foreign companies that owned and dominated most of the island, implement land reform, expand schools and clinics, and set Cuba on an independent course. There were victims of the revolution, for whom we continue to seek family unification. Some elites and some common people fled the turmoil of revolution. Relations with the U.S. quickly soured. John Kennedy signed off on the “covert” Bay of Pigs invasion by a CIA-organized and -trained army of Cuban exiles. They were defeated easily, and the CIA never forgave Castro for the embarrassment. The U.S. launched multiple assassination attempts, enforced an economic embargo and tried various ways to sabotage the Cu-
16
ban economy. Cut off from the hemisphere, Castro turned to the Soviet Union, which supplied oil and aid. The U.S. strangled and starved him into strength. Castro’s defiance and pride consolidated the hatred of U.S. governing circles. He exported doctors and teachers while the U.S. exported weapons and war. Across the world — and in parts of the U.S. — Castro was and is celebrated. He stood with Africans against European Fidel Castro imperialism and South African apartheid. He stood with Latin Americans against Yankee domination and corrupt local regimes. He dispatched doctors across the world to nonaligned nations, earning friends and saving lives. In 1975, he launched an audacious airlift of Cuban troops to repel the South African invasion of Angola, marking the beginning of the end for apartheid. He celebrated Mandela while the U.S. government was supporting the apartheid government and labeling Mandela a terrorist. In 1959, Castro came to the United Nations in New York City. He chose to stay in the Hotel Teresa in Harlem and met with Malcolm X, acts scorned as a publicity stunt. But in 1959, African Americans couldn’t stay in white hotels across the South. We lived under the American version of apartheid. Neighborhoods across the country were redlined by race. Castro was the first Cuban leader to recognize his country’s large black population, descended from slaves, and to help integrate them into national life. Castro’s embrace of civil rights was an electric message across the black community in the U.S. When I first met Castro in 1984, I found him to be a magnetic personality, a brilliant mind and a proud leader. I was told I couldn’t talk to him about religion. We talked for hours. He told me he had once loved the church and thought of it as a center of activism and social justice, not just piety. But when he came down out of the mountains after defeating the brutal dictator, he was shocked and heartbroken to find the priests armed and ready to kill to defend the graveyards
of the rich. I reminded him of Dr. Martin Luther King and the other theologians of liberation, and Castro came to church with me in Havana. It was the first time Castro had gone to church in 27 years. I had to remind him to take off his hat and put out his cigar. We laughed and settled in for the service. I was told he wouldn’t talk about political prisoners. We talked, and he released 48 prisoners to me. In later years, Castro’s government cooperated with the U.S. in countering terrorism. His health and education systems became the envy of much of the hemisphere. He was hero and mentor to a new generation of populist nationalists across the hemisphere — from Hugo Chavez in Venezuela to Evo Morales in Bolivia. Castro’s legacy is surely mixed. Under constant threat from abroad, he jailed political enemies, suppressed free speech and trampled on rights. Cuba’s economy stagnated, particularly after the Soviet Union fell apart, but it survived despite being cut off from a major logical trading partner. U.S. enmity helped make Castro a global hero, a symbol of the possibility of independence for developing nations, but it inflicted great costs upon the Cuban people. The U.S. recognized and traded with the Soviet Union, with communist China, with brutal regimes from Saudi Arabia to Pinochet’s Chile, but the embargo against Cuba went on and on. When Barack Obama came to the White House, he discovered that instead of isolating Castro, the embargo was isolating the U.S. in our own hemisphere. After nearly 60 years of a frozen failed policy, the U.S. finally has started small steps toward normal relations. We shouldn’t be naive. Castro was no saint; the Cuban regime was repressive and wrong-headed about many things. But we shouldn’t view Castro solely from the perspective of those who fled the revolution or of the Cold Warriors and covert operators who spent decades trying to bring him down. We won’t understand the perversity of our own policies if we don’t understand why Castro’s leadership is celebrated across much of the world.

What’s up with Kanye West Dear Alma: I’m wondering what’s going on with Kanye West? Do you think there are some underlying reasons why he’s suffering from ‘exhaustion’ and canceling his shows? I am a huge fan and I made sure to see him anytime he was within 100 miles from where I live. As a super fan, I mean from way back to the “College Dropout” days, I am seriously worried about him and was wondering what your take is? us, money doesn’t buy endless stints of euphoria. Nope, life doesn’t constantly deliver peace of mind, your way every day or relief from unimaginable grief. My heart strongly feels Kanye is suffering from just that — grief. He has yet to settle his soul when it comes to the death of his mother. Maybe he feels responsible, as if he contributed in some way. Contemplating perhaps that his dream come true, chance of a lifetime, provided payment for his mother’s procedure. His actions, his pain, leads me to believe he’s trying to pay off a non-refundable loan with his life. My prayer for Kanye to a sister circle of saints, a consecrated collection of comforters who will — call on the Name, guiding him back to his roots,
the place where his mama would go when she needed to hear a word… Can I get a Amen?! If I had the chance, I’d say to Kanye, “Sometimes you need a chitchat, a conversation from somebody who knows you by your ole’ school nickname not your gangster Grammy game.” Along with prayer, he needs professional help, ain’t nothing wrong with that. A professional will guide him out of the hallway of pain and blame, towards a classroom to reconcile, replenish and educate himself on how to live without his loving mother. Understandably, he won’t want to attend this course, but it is undeniably a lesson on heartbreak that he can’t afford to skip. Alma
