Jones talks about what Dallas County deserves in a judge

Message from the candidate: Raquel “Rocky” Jones for Judge of the 203rd Judicial District Court My name is Raquel “Rocky” Jones and I am running for Judge of the 203rd Judicial District Court in Dallas County. With the 2018 Democratic primary election just days away, I want to take this opportunity to tell you why I am running for this particular bench, share my qualifications and shed light on a couple of issues that have been reported during this campaign season. Why I am running for the 203rd

for Judge of the 203rd Judicial District Court to restore accountability and justice to the court. I am running because the citizens of Dallas County deserve a judge who has thorough knowledge of the law and honors the laws she is sworn to uphold.

the appropriate punishment for every offense and in some instances is actually a disservice to the community when a judge repeatedly places defendants on probation who abscond (run away), have a history of being repeat offenders and/or graduate from non-violent crimes to violent crimes. I expect criminal judges to look at the evidence in each case, consider the defendant’s criminal history, whether or not he/she reports to probation regularly and hold them accountable for their actions in a manner that does not pose a threat to public safety. Below are examples of presiding Judge Teresa Hawthorne’s extensive history of continuing to give probation time after time to defendants who plead guilty on felony offenses even after they have violated the conditions of their probation, absconded or re-offended while on probation.

In September 2017, after several months of contemplation, discussions with my family and prayer, I decided to run for a felony judicial bench in the 2018 election. Once my mind was made up about seeking elected office, I had State of Texas vs. Leo Rickey to make a decision about which Deleon bench I was going to seek. With Deleon was initially placed on 17 felony courts in Dallas Coundeferred adjudication for the offense of Attempted Robbery and ty, I assessed which court in my while on probation, the defendant opinion was most in need of an committed and plead guilty to Inoverhaul with respect to dispensto a Child Performance of a ing justice, accountability and efAttorney David Godsey with judicial candidate jury Sex Act on a 3-year-old and Judge ficiency. During this campaign season, I have case that comes before the court. Cases of interest been asked, “Why are you running for this One of the biggest deficiencies in the 203rd State of Texas vs. Awoniyi Adedeya bench?” My reasons are simple. I pride Judge Hawthorne placed Adedeya on promyself on a long-standing reputation built is the lack of accountability. While incarceron the utmost integrity and fairness to both ation is certainly not the appropriate punish- bation for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly victims and the accused, and I am running ment for every case, likewise probation is not Weapon. In violation of his probation, De-

I Messenger fendant Adedeya was seen at a gun show in Ft. Worth having his girlfriend purchase a weapon for him as a strawman purchaser. This is when an individual buys a gun for someone who is prohibited by law from possessing one or for someone who does not want his or her name associated with the transaction. Strawman purchases are illegal. Several officers and federal agents testified to witnessing and seeing Adedeya at the gun show, selecting the gun and having his girlfriend complete the purchase. Judge Hawthorne did not believe the officers and continued the defendant on probation. State of Texas vs. Javonta Williams Defendant Williams was convicted of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon/ Serious Bodily Injury/Family Violence for shooting his girlfriend in the head in front of her daughter. A Dallas County jury sentenced the defendant to life in prison. Judge Hawthorne was upset about the jury’s verdict and advised the defendant’s lawyers to file an appeal and also file a motion for new trial, which she stated she would grant. The judge was later recused from (prohibited from presiding over) the case for telling the attorneys how to proceed and telling them in advance that she would grant the motion for new trial prior to hearing any evidence, therefore, demonstrating clear bias. The case was removed from the 203rd and transferred to another trial court. The reprimand In addition to the judge’s misuse of probation, in an extremely rare move, in November 2017, the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct issued a Public Reprimand to Judge Hawthorne. The Commission, responsible for investigating allegations of judicial misconduct, reprimanded Judge Hawthorne for using her influence to interfere in her nephew’s criminal case in Lubbock County, and for shaming a jury for their verdict in an unrelated rape case of a 65-year-old woman in her court. Following a trial in the 203rd, the jury in a brutal rape case sentenced the defendant to 99 years in prison and Judge Hawthorne told the jury she did not believe the woman had been raped. In her nephew’s criminal case, Judge Hawthorne showed up at a hearing and attempted to serve as a character witness for him, an action that is prohibited for sitting judges. She also tried to influence and

communicate with a Lubbock County judge about her nephew’s case without including the prosecutor or defense attorney on the communications, an action that is unethical. Petition challenge Judge Hawthorne was recently deemed ineligible to run for re-election in the 2018 Democratic primary due to entering the wrong information on the filing paperwork required to run for elected office. Judge Hawthorne wrote “March 6, 2018,” which is the date of the upcoming primary election, in the blank space provided at the top of each petition page. The problem with not identifying which political party you represent during signature collection is there are both Democratic and Republican primary elections on March 6th. Therefore, it is critical to clearly identify your political affiliation to avoid any appearance of misleading voters as to which party a candidate represents. (Judge Hawthorne first ran for judge as a Republican in 2006 and switched parties when she ran as a Democrat in 2010). I simply brought the incomplete petitions and applicable election laws to the attention of the Democratic Party to ensure the playing field was level entering into the primary. The Party reviewed the challenge and in accordance with the law, made the decision to remove Judge Hawthorne’s name from the 2018 Democratic primary ballot. This resulting action was 100% avoidable by Judge Hawthorne. Some critics of the challenge have alleged that the Party did not provide sufficient guidance or instructions on how to properly complete the paperwork, yet in a review of Hawthorne’s filings from 2009 and 2013, there were no errors and no missing information on her petitions. If the tables had been turned and there had been legitimate questions about my filing paperwork, I have no doubt my former opponent would have submitted a challenge to the validity of my candidacy. Raquel “Rocky” Jones at-a-glance I am a licensed attorney with more than 21 years of experience and I have worked as a prosecutor (adult and juvenile), criminal defense lawyer and a civil attorney and have tried all types of felony offenses. signed to run for elected office in accordance with office policy. I have a total of 17 years experience as a prosecutor between my service in Dallas County and my previous years of service at the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office. I am currently working as a criminal defense attorney at the Law Office of Raquel “Rocky” Jones. I am the daughter of a single mother who was raised in Arlington, Texas. I graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and journalism, and earned a threeyear scholarship to attend St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio. During law school, I studied abroad in Innsbruck, Austria, at the Institute on World Legal Problems. My law licenses include the State Bar of Texas, U.S. District Court of Northern Texas and the United States Supreme Court. Always eager to affect change in my profession beyond the walls of the courtroom, I am active in professional and civic organizations including the Texas District and County Attorneys Association, where I have served as a faculty advisor and regular speaker. I am an adjunct professor at the University of North Texas; a distinguished member of Texas Bar College; serve on the Desoto City Council Charter Review Commission; am a dedicated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; an active member of Community Missionary Baptist Church; a member of the Texas A&M University Alumni Association; a lifelong Democrat; wife; and mother. I believe my extensive knowledge of the law, range of criminal legal experience and years as an instructor for trial lawyers, coupled with more than two decades of dedicated community service make me qualified to serve Dallas County as Judge of the 203rd Judicial District Court. The Dallas Morning News, Progressive Voters League – New Era, Stonewall Democrats, Dallas Police Association, Mexican American Bar Association, Lake Highlands White Rock Democrats and Preston Hollow Democrats have endorsed my campaign. Please join them in supporting me at the polls so we can restore accountability to the 203rd. Early voting begins February 20th and election day is March 6, 2018. Yes, we must all pray!

Prayer is fundamental to our progress as a nation, and to our personal growth as human-beings. In each of our lives, it represents an opportunity to reflect, and to grow closer to God. And at the moment, when we find ourselves in somewhat bewildering times, prayer is even more important to our wholeness, and to our thinking. During times of regret and despair, prayer brings a sense of renewal and grace. For the past two decades I have invited people in North Texas to a prayer breakfast in Dallas. This year’s prayer breakfast, the twenty-fourth, has the same objective as those that preceded it, bringing together a diverse group of faith leaders to pray collectively for our congressional district and its residents, for our state, for our nation and for our world. The composition of our sessions has reflected the ethnic, cultural and faith complexion of North Texas. People of many colors and various beliefs have been present over the years, and have experienced a sense of oneness. Many of them met for the first time at the breakfasts, established friendships

and have worked with one another on projects to enhance the larger community. The prayers spoken by those at the breakfasts have their origins in the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths. Though some of the words were different, the messages touched the hearts of all those in attendance. Prayer does not acknowledge differences. All people are its beneficiaries. When I was a child my siblings and I were taught the power of prayer by our parents. As a family we prayed before each meal, and during times when we gathered together to reflect and make decisions. Prayer became a guiding light in my life. I prayed as a student in high school, and in college. I prayed while I was pregnant with my son, Kirk. Prayer has played a major

role in every election that I participated in, and in every decision that I have made as an elected official. I could not have withstood the rigors of public life, and its many disappointments and challenges, if I had not been equipped with prayer. I am extremely grateful to all of those who have been a part of our prayer vigils. They have been sustained by prayer, and it is reflect-

ed in the good works that they have done, and continue to do, in our district and throughout the state of Texas. I urge everyone to pray on a regular basis. It brings renewal to our spirits, hope when we are dispirited and much-needed clarity during periods of turmoil. • Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the 30th Congressional District of Texas.

HALL: I’m with Her QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

Dallas Democrats are in a no lose situation when it comes to the Dallas County District Attorney’s race. This is not a choice of the lesser of two evils. Former judge and prominent litigator John Creuzot is a good man but former judge and masterful trial lawyer, Elizabeth Davis Frizell is a helluva woman; and that Trumps all. Either candidate will be a formidable foe for the sitting DA who was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott. (Hint, Hint.) Both candidates have ample trial and bench experience; both are knowledgeable of the law. However, Frizell, a lifelong Democrat has a passion and perspective for the job that signals some major changes in the local criminal justice system. Dallas’ first Black DA Craig Watkins kicked in the door, but we need someone to manage the store. As one local Pastor put it; “We don’t need someone to tweak the system, it’s got to be transformed.” African-American women will be the turnkey vote in this election. Black Twitter and Facebook are ablaze in a movement to end America’s Mass Incarceration nightmare. Ending “The school to

prison to pipeline” has become the rallying cry in Black America. There is a newfound appreciation for former Speaker Tip O’Neill’s constant admonishment; “All politics are local.”

Almost 25 years ago, Liz was appointed by the court to defend a family member. It was a murder case, but there were issues around the decedent and whether his death was caused by the injury or by medical negligence. For two weeks, I sat by her side and watched as she meticulously dismembered the prosecution

As Donald Trump fills the higher courts with rightwing Conservatives, our only defense is to fill local courts with judges who are somber, sensitive and creative. There are too many young minority men in jails and prison. There has been a rise in the number of women being incarcerated. Consequently, the lives of thousands of our children have been decimated and our juvenile justice system is overburdened.

team. Ms. Frizell argued and proved the defendant was acting in self-defense and the jury agreed. The defendant went from facing 30 years-to-life, to a more appropriate sentence of fewer than five years. In too many cases at our courthouse today, court-appointed attorneys push plea bargains. Liz Davis Frizell knows how to get that changed. In fairness, John Creuzot has a cadre of Dallas heavyweights on his side, includ-

QUIT PLAYIN’

ing Senator Royce West and former Dallas Mayors Ron Kirk and Diane Ragsdale (Ms. Ragsdale will go down in history as my mayor). To boot, Creuzot has a wide segment of Dallas’ GOP who will show their support. He earned it. And that’s where I draw the line. Creuzot has been both Democrat and Republican as it suited his needs. Read “The Untold Story of Susan Hawk”, November 2015 in D Magazine. The story details how the Republican leadership tried to draft Creuzot to run against Craig Watkins. The GOP still got love for him. That speaks volumes to me. However, and being blatantly honest, I invest no hope and little trust in elected Black Republicans since the age of Ronald Reagan. Nunca, Nunca, Nunca. There’s not enough room to expand here; but hit me up. You buy the Modelo Especial and I will complete this soliloquy. Liz Davis Frizell will address money bail issues, develop creative alternatives for addicts and non-violent offenders and confront a litany of other race and gender issues we have in our courts. The Democrats can’t lose and the heavy-hitters are with Creuzot, but with all due respect; I’m with her. #StayWoke #QuitPlayin Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journal-

Loud love-making is a disturbance Father had to listen to all the ruckus

Ask ALMA Dear Alma, I live in a lovely three-story apartment building and get along famously with most of my neighbors – except for one who occasionally makes love to his girlfriend very loudly. It doesn’t happen that often, and the other neighbors don’t seem to mind. I have tried talking to him about it, and I have even banged on the wall separating us, but it hasn’t stopped. I don’t want to be a nuisance, but this is annoying and awkward, especially when it happened when my dad was visiting. What should I do? Sleepless in Seattle

Ok, I’m embarrassed and redfaced, although my brown skin won’t let you see it. LOL. This is really, really funny and such an awkward position to be in, especially when you have company. Despite it being so totally embarrassing, it’s not all that unusual. In fact, it has happened to me.

I think she enjoyed the attention. You say you’ve knocked on the wall with no success. I’d suggest you contact the landlord or tenants association in writing. Check your rental agreement. It should mention violations such as property damage, disruptive behavior and/or excessive noise. This situation falls under those parameters. Since you live in such a lovely building, I assume you won’t be moving anytime soon. While you’re waiting for the appropriate authorities to resolve this issue, I suggest you invest in a great pair of headphones and/or a white-noise sound machine. I hope your problem gets better When I was dealing with this situation, I put a note under the neigh- soon. All the best to you, my friend. bor’s door. Alma Did it stop the noises? No.

It doesn’t happen that often, and the other neighbors don’t seem to mind. I have tried talking to him about it, and I have even banged on the wall separating us, but it hasn’t stopped.

By Hollywood Hernandez Movie Review

The 15:17 to Paris On August 21, 2015 three young Americans were on board a train to Paris when a terrorist, armed with automatic weapons and several hundred rounds of ammunition, tried to take over the train. The three friends, two of them with military training, sprung into action and subdued the terrorist, at great personal risk, saving the lives of all the passengers on the train. The 15:17 to Paris is the true life story of that act of heroism. Not only is it the true story, the movie also features the three real life heroes who thwarted the attack. Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos all play themselves. Also a local connection in the film is Ray Corasani, who plays the terrorist. He attended The University of Texas in Arlington (UTA). The actual story of the attack takes place in the last 30 minutes of the movie. Everything that comes before that tells the life stories of the three friends and shows what bought them to the that attack on board the train. It almost seems as if they were destined to be

there at that moment in history like it was a crazy case of serendipity. The movie begins by showing the three friends in junior high (obviously played by

three younger actors) right through their young adult lives as they each struggle to find their place in the world. While the three real life characters add authenticity to the movie their acting skills are a bit amateurish along side the professional actors in the film. Director Clint Eastwood handles the three inexperienced actors amazingly well and makes a film that relies on the story of friendship and heroism to make you overlook that one blaring weakness in the film. The finished product isn't terrible or excellent. It's just somewhere in the middle. Be sure to stay after the final credits for actual footage of the "Heroes Parade" the three young men received in their hometown of Sacramento. CA. The movie is rated PG-13 for violence and language and has a run time of 1 hour and 34 minutes. Although inspiring the movie only rates a MEDIUM on my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale." http://www.hollywoodhernandezlive.com/

How Do I Smile? Even today, when my heart continues to cry; Because you were and always will be. Realizing the finality of life and knowing we all must die. Yet, relishing the time left for me. To live and learn; to move forward and love. Left to finish things started by we two. Accepting your absence but still feeling your love. All the time frightened by what I might see. Asking for guidance and hoping it comes; To brighten the path I must take; none to shun. Connecting broken pieces from this life I now make.

See that Devil... Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington

Invariably as a Christian, the notion of Satan will come up and that conversation can range from soup to nuts, as we all know. I am often encouraged in these, sometimes crazy, discussions that God’s plan is very precise and obvious to those looking for His Word. My favorite point of reference in all of this is Matthew 4:1-11 regarding the three temptations of Jesus in the desert after 40 days of fasting. Remember when Satan offers Christ ‘all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor?’ I was shocked at the power the devil has to tempt each and every one of us as we operate on what is essentially his turf. Now you’ve got to remember Lucifer hung out with the Lord in heaven. They were roadies for a while until he got the big head and was banished to this physical realm where we reside. Once Jesus rebuked Satan for the third time, scripture says, “Then the devil left Him and angels came and attended Him.” So once Jesus withstood temptation, God then delivered unto Him all that Satan had offered and more. You see, in reality, all that stuff that Satan tempted Christ with was Jesus’ birthright anyway and get this: It’s

ours also. So, let me get this straight. The devil probably knows the Bible better than we do. He understands what tempts us, because he knows what pleases the Lord. Remember, they once hung out together. It stands to reason that I am a much easier target than Jesus was and ruination for me won’t necessarily take the promise of all kingdoms of the world and their splendor. However, my biblically inspired common sense lets me know that I am made in the image of God and I’ll be okay if I surrender all that I have and all that I am to Him; He, who is my Lord and Savior. By doing so I should be able to put myself in a position to at least see the devil coming. If I can just see him coming, then maybe I’ll be able to withstand, for a moment in time, the perceived need to have my wants and desires satisfied by sacrificing the integrity of my soul for momentary gratification. Intellectually, I understand the difference between the temptation of sin and a test of faith. It’s all about perspective, that which is spiritual and that which is secular. Once Jesus answered each of Satan’s successive temptations with Matthew 4:4: “It is written; Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the

mouth of the Lord.” Matthew 4:7: It is also written; Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” Matthew 4:10: “Away from me Satan! For it is written, Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only,” then the devil left and the angels came. The key then is to get on the other side of temptation by walking in the Word consciously enough to understand that just saying no to Satan is an absolute guarantee of getting all that you desire and need in this life. What must be overcome however is the cunning nature of the devil in his efforts

to get you and me to forget, ignore or not take seriously that he is indeed the source of the temptation(s) designed to kill you and hurt the Lord. When in doubt, call on the name of the Lord and eventually Satan will be replaced with angels ready to attend to you. As Jesus so appropriately put it, “Seek ye first the kingdom and whatever it is that you desire, you will have more…” May God bless and keep you always.

James

A Way Out of This Out of the darkness, be drawn to the light. It will warm and comfort you and turn your day from the night. Allowing you to see the good times and find strength in them It will show, without a doubt, that your strength comes from Him. Everything imaginable rearranged by death. Outlining the measure of the dash that you dwell on earth. Although weakened by sadness, muster all you might. Weep if you must but keep moving towards the light.
